Agustina Woodgate At Dimensions Variable Endlessly Falling at Spinello Gallery 11/14/09

EndlesslyFalling_CC
Spinello Gallery is proud to announce AGUSTINA WOODGATE’S, ENDLESSLY FALLING, hosted at DIMENSIONS VARIABLE (171 NE 38th Street, Miami, FL., 33137), located next to Spinello Gallery.

Endlessly Falling is the second installation in a new series of landscapes. The sceneries construct surreal exteriors in interior spaces, probing the relation between everyday objects and the grand narratives that condition our unnatural relationship to the natural world.

A hanging chandelier holds thousands of clear strands of water falling over the grounds. Beneath the only functional light fixture, something emerges and grows. In Endlessly Falling, we are home; we must be, except as usual, the home is strange. In fact, it is this homey that is strange, that comfort of home doesn’t quite settle. Because of this, incongruities become meaning-makers. Instead of order emerging from chaos, chaos emerges from the order. We follow the displacement line again and again, in an effort to make sense of the sensory, in an effort to recompose the many directions the story leads.

Through this new series of works, Agustina probes environments as interior escapes and exterior escapades. She is always unfolding a narrative process that also tells the larger story of her own oeuvre. She adventures another tale in our midst, as each new piece patterns the fictions we all share.

November 14, 2009 – January 2, 2010
Agustina Woodgate is an interdisciplinary artist who uses a wide range of media, including photography, installation, sculpture, video, and performance to create enchanted worlds. Her work investigates the encounter between childhood dreams and adult socialization, and how innocence, magic, and the fantastical configure our relationships to our objects, behaviors, selves, and stories. Fueled by an endless captivation with her own process, Agustina discovers how we naturally and unnaturally compose our rituals, memories, traditions, and narratives through the materials around us. Originally from from Buenos Aires, she now makes her home in Miami, FL, represented by Spinello Gallery.
Opening Reception: November 14th / 7-11PM
SPINELLO GALLERY prides itself in exhibiting intelligent works of art in every medium by contemporary local Miami emerging artists. Clemencia Labin | Doping Pulpa
Paula Otegui | Metaforas de la naturaleza
Diana Lowenstein Fine Arts
Saturday, November 14th, 7:30-10pm

CLEMENCIA LABIN – Doping Pulpa
The art that Clemencia Labin has been working on for the past few years is brimming with moisture, fragrance and colour. It oozes tropical splendour and also winks playfully at creatures of the far-off, imaginary land of childhood: cuddly toys. The fabrics chosen by Labin in her work, cloths of all kinds with soft filling, are the same as those used for teddy bears. This element of tenderness which is connected to all things soft, snug and spongy, gives her work a warmth quite rare in the cynical, disbelieving world of contemporary art, so used to exploiting the darker, seedier side of culture.
Labin´s work not only strikes a note of tenderness, but also of fun, evident in titles such as Pulpa Chic and Doping Pulpa. Her art exudes a sense of ease and a healthy attitude of not taking itself too seriously, while simultaneously providing an in depth study, full of sensuality, tenderness and respect, working the materials with such expertise that her creations become surprising objects, in the purest sense of the word.
Her sense of fun is fully apparent in her creations, which constantly challenge formats and concepts. Are they wall sculptures or paintings with a three-dimensional element? Are they cuddly toys or are they to be admired forever on the wall of a gallery or museum?
Much is said about the influence of Pop Art in Clemencia´s work, but that is somewhat questionable. Labin´s work makes use of the ease, the humour and the colouring associated with Pop Art, but differs from it in that it is free of the inherent cynicism connected to that movement.
This exhibition takes place in an architectural space which is an elongated prism in shape for which Labin has designed an all-encompassing show: in other words, she uses the space as an interior designer or an architect would. She does not merely “hang” or position her pieces, but plans out meticulously how she is going to use the whole space.
Originally from Venezuela, Clemencia Labin studied at Columbia University and currently lives and works in Hamburg, Germany.

PAULA OTEGUI – Metaforas de la naturaleza
Paula Otegui was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, where she studied at the Escuela Superior Ernesto de la Cárcova, Instituto Universitario Nacional de Arte, as well as the Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes Prilidiano Pueyrredón. Her work has been exhibited internationally since 1995. She is the recipient of numerous awards and distinctions. Her intricately detailed paintings depicting a natural, yet fantastical world, are featured in the Project Room. As mirrored in her work, Otegui believes the world can be a complex sum, sometimes pathetic. The essential exists in the interactions. Everything occurs simultaneously, while the effects are infinite.

Exhibitions will be on view through November 25th, 2009.

LUIS DIAZ
Painter and Illustrator Luis Diaz collected Garbage Pail Kids card/stickers by Topps, like many other kids in ’86-88. Not realizing the artwork on the cards were a strong influence in his art, he never thought of GPK’s again till some time in college and felt the 80’s were slowly creeping into everyone’s subconscious. Hearing about GPK’s being re-released from a friend, he was suddenly transported to that world again and decided he wanted to find out if there’s a possibility if he can be involved in the series. He contacted several past GPK’s artists after doing some digging online and found the address to send samples of his work to Topps.
Several months later he received a call from Topps accepting his work, which for Luis was a dream come true!
Garbage Pail Kids were originally released in 1985 and designed to parody the Cabbage Patch Kids dolls created by Xavier Roberts, which were immensely popular at the time. Each card/sticker featured a Garbage Pail Kid character, with some comical abnormality and/or suffering some terrible fate, and a humorous, word play-rich character name.
Luis created over 40 paintings for the new GPKs and Wacky Packages.
Wacky Pacakges are a series of trading cards featuring parodies of American consumer products. The cards were produced by the Topps Company beginning in 1967, usually in a sticker format, the cards spoofed well-known brands and packaging, such as “Crust” (instead of Crest) toothpaste, “Blisterine” (instead of Listerine), and “Neveready” batteries (for Eveready Industries batteries).
Now at the Harold Golen Gallery is your rare opportunity to own an original Garbage Pail Kids and or Wacky Packages painting by luis Diaz in his one man show, that is not to be missed !

Money Makes Art opening at Artformz Alternative 11/14/09

money
Join the Artists Saturday, November 14th 7-10pm
at 171 NW 23rd Street, Wynwood Arts District
and a special event “Money/Art/Opinion” with
Award-winning journalist and art critic Elisa Turner
Artformz’s winter group show addresses the current global concern for “money”. How money, the abundance of it, or the utter lack of it, affects everyone’s lives is the topic of conversation everywhere. The outcome has been decidedly personal with each artist coming up with decidedly different work in each of their own styles, yet all reflect the current focus on currency. Everywhere there seems a conversation of sales, consumption, need, the economy, the paycheck, the job, retirement, bills, mortgages, college funds, layoffs, and studio rent. The dilemma is more relevant now as artists tiptoe through this recession. While we listen to the hype and propaganda on how everything is getting better, the work struggles to get made and each artist finds there own creative way to survive. Money certainly does facilitate making art, but at the same time, the lack of an abundance of money in the wrong hands, may just possibly make better art.

Locust Projects presents Francesca DiMattio Decollage 11/14/09

DiMattio_Decollage
Francesca DiMattio
Decollage
Opening reception: November 14th, 7-10pm
Through December 30, 2009

Locust Projects is pleased to present Decollage, a solo exhibition by New York-based artist Francesca DiMattio. Decollage describes the process DiMattio uses — of cutting, tearing and peeling away images – to explore collage through large banners and a site-specific mural.

DiMattio is known for her large-scale paintings depicting spaces where architectural and modernist forms, sculptural figures, and art historical elements collide with one another. Using various painting techniques, the artist creates the illusion of collage in these works. For her exhibition at Locust Projects, DiMattio will create an installation that continues her exploration of the spaces where disparate elements meet — by employing actual collage for the first time.

In banners that measure up to ten feet in height, Xerox images are glued on top of one another, and then peeled away in parts to reveal new forms and relationships. The source materials come from DiMattio’s archive of magazines such as Home and Garden and National Geographic, found books, and reproductions of the artist’s paintings. Images are lacerated into strips and cut into quilt patterns, only to be re-adhered using weaving and scrap-booking techniques. Each artwork simultaneously illustrates the diametrical concepts of building and collapsing space. The pieces are further accentuated with acrylic and watercolor paint.

A site-specific mural will also be created at Locust Projects, drawing inspiration from the culture and scenery of the Miami area. This work is composed of clips of the sun, beach chairs, ocean, ships and construction cranes. Rather than present a coherent narrative, however, the images are fragmented, broken, and interrupted. Each element is given equal weight, radically altering traditional hierarchies of value and forming a powerful piece that vacillates between abstraction and figuration.

Francesca DiMattio (b. 1981) lives and works in New York. She has had solo exhibitions at Salon 94 in New York, and LAXART in Los Angeles. She is currently part of the group exhibition Abstract America: New Painting and Sculpture at The Saatchi Gallery in London and will present a solo show, ArtWall at ICA Boston in 2010. Dimattio’s work is in the permanent collection of the Miami Art Museum.

This exhibition is made possible with the support from: Andy Warhol Foundation; Galt & Skye Mikesell; Hannibal Cox Jr. Foundation; Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs, the Cultural Affairs Council, the Mayor, and the Miami-Dade County Board of County Commissioners. Special thanks to Salon 94, New York. Design: Venture Architects.

Cremata Gallery
“Cardo ni ortiga cultivo … ” the one-man show by Cuban artist Pepe Herrera presented at Cremata Gallery, is his “opera prima” in our city. He arrives preceded by his recent and very successful participation in two major exhibitions in Spain: “Entre rías…” reviewed extensively in El Nuevo Herald (July13th, 2009), inaugurated in the very center of Madrid’s art triangle next to the Prado Museum, and “La isla expandida” showcased at Huelva’s Museum of Art. Pepe Herrera is a master twice over: he enjoys international recognition as an outstanding figure of the celebrated 1980s Cuban generation, and at the same time, he is one of the best serigraphers of our time. His move to Barcelona 20 years ago and later to Madrid helped him become a major player in the European market. In his previous visit, he launched the first of a series of serigraphs of master Cundo B ermúdez carried out by him, edited by Cremata Gallery. Let this exhibition, full of mystery and subtlety, fill you with wonder as it explores an imaginary garden.

CECILIA PAREDES | Fugitive Dreams
Paredes combines origin, nature and femininity to create a beautifully subtle blend of visual aesthetics, self-introspection and representation. Her artwork is created through the lens of past and present life experiences, integrated with cultural, poetic and environmental influences. Her immersion in a variety of cultures gives her a nomadic perspective that informs her work. Her itinerant existence is reflected in her art as she wanders, and metaphorically portrays her many selves. Paredes explores exactly where she fits in with the natural world. In more recent photo-performance works, she shifts her focus to feelings about migration and displacement.

Paredes’ work recognizes the inherent relationship between the origins of humanity and the natural world. While methods and aesthetics have changed, she addresses the same range of issues from origin, to migration, to femininity. Her balance between traditional artistic methods and the incorporation of natural elements creates a genuinely beautiful fusion and contrast between art and nature – where her art always insinuates itself. As much as these images and objects are viewed in public, they retain a sense of privacy or ritualistic secrecy. In the process of creating and interpreting, the artist seeks a poetic connection to the world. And the art produced through her investigations creates a window into a reality where she expertly delivers a simultaneous sense of enchantment and verisimilitude.
An Animal in Her Time, Ruth Miller and Mark Jew.

Project Room
CHRIS NATROP | Dewdrop Cloud Machine

Natrop employs transparent plastics, video projection and multi-channel audio alongside intricate, hand-cut paper to create fully immersive environments within gallery and museum spaces. Viewers are encouraged to enter these installations to experience the realm where elements of light, shadow and form coalesce into a fully unified world. Most individual components are hand-cut in the studio, then custom-arranged for a particular space. For works on paper, each piece is spontaneously created without the use of patterns or pre-drawing – this stream-of-consciousness approach is the crux of the artist’s practice.

Graphic silhouettes emerge from meditative-channeling activated by the repetitive practice of cutting paper. Natrop works on sheets of Lenox 100 paper stretched out on his studio wall. Wielding a standard utility knife, he spontaneously cuts away creating a hybrid of landscape imagery. Natrop’s free-form “knife drawing” process reveals negative space by removing emptiness in-between forms. Often an amalgam of things previously observed, the graphic nature becomes a freeze-frame of Natrop’s own surroundings revealing his particular sense of place. In many cases one feature will be multiplied, resulting in a dense layering of a single element. A multiplicity of water droplets, crawling vines or cracks in the pavement may be rendered and reworked within each installation. Emotional forces further contextualize the work within this structure: anticipation, apprehension, disorientation or joyfulness often encapsulate the work’s inherently myopic narrative. This fusion between internal, emotional space and external, physical landscape is the framework for much of Natrop’s practice.

Spinello Gallery (155 NE 38 St., No. 101, Miami Florida – 33137) is proud to present the much-anticipated solo exhibition by one of Miami’s original stars, Manny Prieres, “What We Do Is Secret.” The Cuban-American artist will feature a suite of haunting graphite and watercolor works on paper and sculpture . This will be Prieres’ debut exhibition with the gallery.
Prieres explains, “Every collision leaves a trace behind: debris, a trail of residue that marks the site where violence took place.” The work of Manny Prieres is that sort of remnant, the product of the clash between a traditional, temperamental heritage, and an intense, idiosyncratic counterculture. During the process of this convergence, a series of artifacts are created. They stand at the threshold of a new folklore: they are the iconography of a new tradition.
In this sense, Manny Prieres is an archaeologist, one that has painstakingly and lovingly preserved the objects of an unexplored civilization: their symbols, their gods, their rituals, and their lore. These artifacts bring up tales from the artist’s personal history, yet as a whole they create new narratives that, despite having hybrid elements from multiple sources of influence, are nevertheless moving towards an entirely different place.
Manny Prieres has been an active member of the Miami art scene for over ten years. From 1997-2004, Prieres ran one of Miami’s first influental alternative art spaces, BOX, alongside Jose Reyes and Leyden Rodriguez-Casanova. BOX played a crucial role in the development of the Miami art community.
SPINELLO GALLERY prides itself in exhibiting intelligent works of art in every medium by contemporary local Miami emerging artists. SPINELLO GALLERY has become the playground for unorthodox and experimental artists who don’t easily fit into the confines of the traditional gallery space. SPINELLO GALLERY is steadily making headway in the Miami Art Scene and beyond becoming a contender in the Art World.

DIENZO
Rick “Dienzo” Blanco is a Los Angeles area artist whose collection of dark little characters are meant to intrigue, entice and perhaps cause a bit of anxiety. His experience in commercial art as an award-winning designer spans over 15 years. His most recent style is greatly influenced by his work for Disney, Mattel and most recently, Cartoon Network. In creating his art, Dienzo sees the technical aspect as, “taking the world of cartoon like characters and rendering them in the traditional medium of acrylic on canvas. From a content perspective, it’s drawing from the influence of pop-culture elements and experiences as a kid like watching The Munsters and The Addams Family or visiting the Haunted Mansion at Disneyland.

VALERY MILOVIC
Vallery’s inspiration for her paintings come from human frailties and death (things we all have in common), also vintage celluloid, tin and plush toys, cartoons, comics, old black and white photographs and skulls. Patch work bunnies and rag dolls, usually smoking, drinking or both ,are the reoccurring characters that tell her story of loneliness and feeling like an outcast , which she identifies with greatly. Broken Toyland , inspired by the book ‘The Velveteen Rabbit’, (she highly recommends reading if you haven’t yet), is the name of the world these endearing characters live, with patters, drips scrapes, layers and whatever else, sets the atmosphere for her charming and wonderful acrylic on canvas paintings.

Natalya Laskis : Opening at Fredric Snitzer Gallery 10/10/09

Natalya Laskis American Odyssey Opening Reception
Saturday October 10th, 7:00 – 9:00pm
Fredric Snitzer Gallery, 2247 NW 1st PL, Miami, FL 33127
305.448.8976, www.snitzer.com

Fredric Snitzer Gallery is pleased to present the first solo exhibition by Miami artist Natalya Laskis. American Odyssey is a reflection on research of the American psyche, which the artist explores in a historical fashion.

Natalya Laskis has discovered a legacy of risk inherit to the American culture. Simple pleasures peppered with ever-present danger have always existed. Like Ulysses, one must dare to take that first step into the unknown in-order to experience adventure along the way. Facing the temptation of sirens, the potential for drowning, the perilous ness of modern day monsters, all for the sake of joy.

In this American Odyssey life’s simple pleasures are readily available to all, but commonly overlooked. The comfort of friendship, the warmth of a bonfire, the merriments of inebriation, and even the excitement of revelry are sometimes taken for granted.

Focusing on the energy with an aggressive approach to color, Natalya Laskis’s paintings are filled with simplicity. Her manipulation of perspective through the brush strokes carries the viewer into the gesture of the artist’s impulsiveness.

Natalya Laskis graduated from the Maryland Institute College of Art, Baltimore, Maryland and New World School of the Arts, Miami, Florida. Her work has been included in group shows at the Fredric Snitzer Gallery Miami, FL and The Fireplace Project, East Hampton, NY among other. ### For more information or images regarding this exhibition please contact 305.448.8976 or info@snitzer.com.

David Castillo Gallery presents Adler Guerrier’s Everyday Travails opening reception 10/10/09

David Castillo Gallery: Adler Guerrier,
Everyday Travails
Adler Guerrier
Everyday Travails
David Castillo Gallery
2234 NW 2nd Avenue, Miami
October 10- November 7, 2009
Reception October 10, 7-10 pm
David Castillo Gallery is proud to present Everyday Travails, Adler Guerrier’s first solo exhibition at the gallery and his first in Miami in over four years. The artist’s creative impulse is both intellectual and organic and is shown by his love of paper and its natural evolution into artwork and by his contemplative photography of the everyday. The current exhibition includes drawings, sculpture, photography, and video encapsulating the ideas of constant interest to the artist: place and the everyday.
The works reveal a structured imprint of the everyday, in the exploration of the relationship of media to the psycho-geographical, social, and political nature of place. Adler Guerrier sets drawing, collage, sculpture, photo, video, and installation in dialogue. His inspired cultural hybrid between color and plane are anchored by fearless, site-specific subversions of place and time in regards to conceptions of race, class, and culture. Often calling upon the districts of Miami and his own backyard, Guerrier examines the contemporary flaneur in an impending post-demographic age.
Adler Guerrier was born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti and lives and works in Miami. He studied at the New World School of the Arts in Miami and has exhibited widely including The Whitney Biennial 2008, the Wolfsonian Miami Beach, and Miami Art Museum. The artist has recently exhibited in VideoStudio at The Studio Museum in Harlem and Pivot Points 3 at Museum of Contemporary Art in North Miami and is in the permanent collection of both institutions. Upcoming exhibitions and projects include Afro-Modernism: Journeys through the Black Atlantic at the Tate Liverpool; commissioned works for Locust Projects Miami and a monograph to be published by Name Publications. Guerrier’s work has appeared in the New York Times, Artnews, and Art in America, among numerous other publications.

Locust Projects presents the TM Sisters: Whirl Crash Go 9/12/09

TM SISTERS
WHIRL CRASH GO!
Open Saturday, September 12th, 7-10pm
In conjunction with Wynwood and Design District Art Walk
Through October 17, 2009
Final_TMSisters
Locust Projects is pleased to announce the opening of the 2008 Hilger Artist Project Award Exhibition, the TM Sisters’ WHIRL CRASH GO!
On July 15th, the Miami-based collaborative will begin their 6-week transformation of Locust Projects’ space for a site-specific performance and exhibition on Saturday, August 29th and October 10th.

In their most ambitious performance to date, the TM Sisters will present a novel production including their personal athletic skills in synchronized swimming and roller skating. There will be moments of clashing and combination of cultures, animated video projections, and vivid Miami spirit. They are collaborating with audio composer Otto Von Schirach, designer Karelle Levy of Krelwear, and a supporting crew of performers. The TM Sisters’ epic piece will culminate into a kaleidoscope event of light, sound, and action.

Monica Lopez De Victoria, 28, and Tasha Lopez De Victoria, 26, grew up in Miami and collaborate under the name TM Sisters. They work in the media of video, digital video performance, VJing, collage, social experiments, zines, clothing, installations, and interactive video created along with their brother Samuel. Their do-it-yourself ethic began with their being home-schooled together by their parents. Their upbringing included frequent discussions regarding spirituality, psychology, behavior, relationships, creativity, and truth. The sisters’ work has been included in the international exhibitions “Uncertain States of America: American Art in the 3rd Millennium,” curated by Hans Ulrich Obrist, Daniel Birnbaum, and Gunnar B. Kvaran; the Second Moscow Biennial of Contemporary Art; and “PERFORMA 07.” Recent exhibitions include “(((sparks))),” Hedreen Gallery at Seattle University, Seattle, WA and “IDEALTONIGHT,” Hollywood Art and Culture Center, Hollywood, FL.

This is the second year that Austrian-based dealer and private collector Prof. Ernst Hilger has teamed up with Locust Projects to support emerging artists. The TM Sisters were selected to receive a $2,000 cash prize and the opportunity to create a seminal work within the Locust Projects’ space.

This exhibition is made possible with the support from: Andy Warhol Foundation; Galt & Skye Mikesell; Hannibal Cox Jr. Foundation; Miami-Dade County Tourist Development Council, the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs, the Cultural Affairs Council, the Miami-Dade County Mayor and Board of County Commissioners; State of Florida Division of Cultural Affairs; and Foundation for Contemporary Arts. Special thanks to Ernst Hilger; Karelle Levy of Krelwear and Otto Von Schirach. Photo: Justin Broadbent. Design: Venture Architects.

Locust Projects hours are Wednesday through Saturday from noon – 5:00 p.m.

This exhibition will remain on view for the Wynwood and Design District Art Walk on September 12th and October 10th, 7-10pm.

WHIRL CRASH GO! will be performed again October 10, 2009 at 8pm

Locust Projects is an alternative, not-for-profit, Miami-based exhibition space dedicated to providing contemporary visual artists the freedom to experiment with new ideas and methods without the pressures of gallery sales or other limitations of conventional exhibition spaces. Artists are encouraged to create site-specific installations as an extension of their representative work and are provided a residence to live while working, offering them a vibrant Miami experience to develop their ideas and methods. Locust Projects is committed to offering an approachable and inviting venue for the Miami and international art community to experience the work and meet the artists.

Flying was a dream and an obsession for centuries until the airplane was invented. Although now we are able to fly assisted by mechanical devices, we still look at birds in a mix of wonder and envy. As a result, wings are seen as the means of transforming, and flying as the ultimate metaphor for freedom, the image of total liberation. In art history there any many examples of artists who have been inspired by the act of flying and as a consequence reflected it on their works.

Here we have two contemporary Cuban artists whose works are connected to this idea: Gustavo is using it as a resource for his paintings and Carlos is more interested in the actual possibility of flying, translating this interest to his sculptures.

The Great Systems – Gustavo Acosta
The idea of being constantly watched drove him to paint what seem like views seen through night vision goggles. These images looked like they were made by somebody who went around while everybody was sleeping and registered what he saw. While experimenting in this direction Gustavo started to play with the color green and the infinite possibilities that it offered. This led him to use the color as a filter, as if he was permanently looking at his surroundings through a green glass. The result is this group of paintings in which he has ‘softened’ the color in a more even tone, getting farther away from the goggles effect and giving the impression of an image captured when the light had a rare diffusion.

Secret codes
In this series of works Gustavo is exploring night views in which he shows us how cities are mapped out by their lights reflected against the dark background of a starry night, almost like electric Nazca lines. There is a sense of abstraction with pure color points made of light dots, the pitch black background emphasizing the emptiness between the ground and the air.

Flights of Fancy – Carlos González’s sculptures
In this new group of sculptures Carlos González continues exploring the natural world yet with a clear departure from his last solo exhibition a couple of years ago. His hard angular forms have dissipated, giving space to more organic and voluptuous pieces. While the previous works reminded us of insects, these new ones are inspired by birds and connected elements such as seeds and flowers. Carlos keeps looking at nature for inspiration and these pieces are his very personal interpretations of it. Seemingly mimicking wings and plants he is bringing to light the overlapping of nature, science and flying devices that seem ready to take off. While the works look like mechanical artifacts, there is still the poetry of nature. The monumentality of his work is balanced by the delicacy and intricacy of each piece, part of a complicated yet delicate oeuvre.

Spit-Polishing a Starless Sky/Outer Space at Charest-Weinberg Gallery 9/12/09

center_image
Spit-Polishing a Starless Sky/Outer Space
Bhakti Baxter, Nicolas Lobo, Gean Moreno, Daniel Newman, Ernesto Oroza, and Gavin Perry will be featured in the exhibition, Spit-Polishing a Starless Sky/Outer Space, at Charest-Weinberg Gallery, from September 12 through October 5, 2009. The opening reception will be on September 12 from 6pm to 9 pm at 250 NW 23rd Street, Space 408, Miami, FL 33127.
The exhibition is comprised of two different exhibitions that have been superimposed without any attempt to make them cohere. Two sets of information have simply been brought together, and the resulting form of the exhibition will be determined by the very dynamics of their interaction.
The first exhibition, Spit-Polishing a Starless Sky, is made up of black or nearly-black paintings by Bhakti Baxter, Daniel Newman and Gavin Perry. In the work of all these painters, the black monochrome is entwined with references that belong in cultural spheres that exist far away from formalist concerns. In Baxter’s case, the black paintings double as images of macroscopic phenomena and have a scientific flavor. In Perry’s work, the black monochrome is literally the high-end side of paintings that also trade in lowbrow referents and objects, like cheap rugs and souped up cars. With Newman, the black glaze is all process. He has covered over 200 found paintings with black, turning a gesture characteristic of iconophobia into a delirious flow of production. In a sense, in the work of all these painters, two sets of information are already blended. Each of their works becomes a stand-in for the overall structure of a double-exhibition with incompatible or competing halves.
The second exhibition, Outer Space, titled after a 1999 short film by Peter Tscherkassky, will be made up of sculptural proposals by Nicolas Lobo and Giancarlo Sardone, and Ernesto Oroza and Gean Moreno. Each of these collaborative projects begins with elements provided by the technologies, conventions and infrastructure that form the invisible materiality of our social space. Working through all the engineering problems and ontological recoding that rendering a virtual artifact in actual space brings, Lobo has collaborated with terrazzo mason Sardone to produce a real-life double of a standard bench that can be found ready-made in the design program SketchUp. As the bench took shape, its proportions began to feel slightly off due to some distortion caused by the SketchUp rendering engine. What looked like a perfectly bland bench on screen takes on an uncanny air in our physical space. Oroza and Moreno will use the tabloid, of the sort found throughout the city’s neighborhoods, to create both a “catalog” and an ornamental wallpaper pattern from forms determined by the exhibition itself that will, in turn, activate the supposed neutral walls of the space.
All of the artists in the exhibition are part of Miami’s burgeoning scene. They have all exhibited their work internationally and are represented in the collections of major museums. This will be the first time their work is shown at Charest-Weinberg Gallery, whose reputation continues to grow as Miami’s premier venue for emerging art.

HORACIO SAPERE
Alternate Combinations builds on the implication of a long-standing body of work connecting the many threads of this thoughtful painter’s work. While predominantly known as a painter, Sapere has always brought a conceptual approach to the media. He has further worked beyond the confines of the media with sculpture and installation, specifically in the Poet’s Room series, which is an ongoing and somehow never completed project in constant evolution. His engagement in ideas established the field of painting and more spatial modes of representation within the parameters of modes of thought and representation. So for Sapere the act of painting, like the act of writing, is situated within the field of thought and should be understood as a form of thought. In his own terms, painting, like sculpture, can be a form of ‘visual poetry’. – William Jeffett
Horacio Sapere was born Buenos Aires, Argentina. His work has been exhibited widely in Europe, as well as Canada, China, Cuba, Egypt, Korea, Uruguay, Venezuela, the United States. He currently lives and works in Palma de Mallorca, Spain.

VICKIE PIERRE
“Within my paintings and drawings, rubber stamp imprints of fictional female icons are converted into a world where the line between abstraction and representation is blurred. The works are primarily comprised of the dresses of the “three graces” of the fairy tale animation world: Snow White, Sleeping Beauty and Cinderella. The repetitive applications and manipulation of the stamped images into clusters and groupings, along with occasional handwritten text, have become the basis of a connective network that alludes to identity, order, sensuality and feminine psychology. The repeated application of these icons also mirrors their mass-produced presence in popular culture. I am drawn to these characters; their underlying themes and their symbolic significance. In appropriating these images and in turn reconfiguring them, I am attempting to create a new meaning (or story). They are now faceless totems, deities, icons of a different caliber that are self-assured, indulgent and independent. These deconstructed and distorted shapes become otherworldly characters with sensual and precious personalities. They are self-contained and self-generating, recalling the abstractions and distortions of flora as well as the human body.”
Vickie Pierre is a Haitian-American artist born in Brooklyn, New York. She received a BFA in Studio Arts from the School of Visual Arts. Pierre relocated to Miami in 1999 and has participated in numerous exhibitions. In 2004, she participated in Transitory Patterns: Florida Women Artists at The National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington, D.C. Her paintings and works on paper have been exhibited at Art Basel Miami Beach, among other fairs. Collections include the Progressive Art Collection, Cleveland, OH; Millennium Partners Collection of Contemporary Art, The Four Seasons, Miami, FL; and ALFA – Wasserman Collection, Bologna, Italy.

CARLOS DE VILLASANTE – Project Room
“In theatre, Short Form follows an improvisational spontaneous format. My paintings likewise follow intuitive suggestions, accidents and interventions. I use automatic mark-making to oppose precise graphic representation in my portraits. I then rely on my sensibilities to suggest which next step to take, much like in theatre when the audience’s suggestions guide the performance.”
Carlos de Villasante was born in Mexico City and lives in Sonoma, California, where he is on the painting faculty at Sonoma State University. He received a BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design and an MFA from the Memphis College of Art. He exhibits his work both in the United States and abroad.
Carlos has taught numerous courses in studio art as well as liberal arts both in MFA and BFA degree programs. He began as a teaching assistant at the Rhode Island School of Design in 1991 and has also taught the Memphis College of Art; the University of Mississippi, Oxford, and New World School of the Arts in Miami. He lived in Miami for several years and was part of the full-time faculty at Miami international University of Art and Design. Carlos is included in the recent book, Miami Contemporary Artists, by Paul Clemence and Julie Davidow.

ARTOCONECTO, THE DYNAMIC MIAMI ARTS NON-PROFIT, PRESENTS:
KIDSART: The Art Show! With a Special LIVE performance by Oscar Fuentes and Friends at 7:30PM!
The kids worked hard creating their projects for five weeks and now they are ready for their Opening Night! Come see their work at Wynwood’s Second Saturday Art Walk!
On Saturday mornings this summer, KIDSART brought a group of kids right into the studios of five notable Miami artists. Each week, a different artist led the kids in a workshop they created based on community-oriented themes, like sustainable art, recycling, or diversity. The kids learned the importance of having art and creativity in their lives, and got to know artists, and each other, in a very personal way. Working on arts projects together, and then sitting down to lunch to discuss their work, brought them a new, and bold perspective on art in Miami, and in their lives. Come see their collaborative creations, and get a glimpse of the artists’ work as well!

David Castillo Gallery is pleased to present You might sleep, but you will never dream, Leyden Rodriguez-Casanova’s second solo exhibition at the gallery.

The artist uses a vocabulary of domestic objects and suburban architectural elements as a visual language, addressing our social, cultural and emotional existence. He uses material appropriations first introduced in post-minimal and conceptual art. Rodriguez-Casanova is presenting a series of objects that use a room as the point of departure for his concepts. All the objects are elements of a room which have been detached from their original context.

As the title of Damien Hirst’s work suggests, The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living, Rodriguez-Casanova is interested in understanding the loss of someone, including one’s self (and the “impossibility” of such). In the work An Open Door, 2008 commissioned for the Dennis and Debra Scholl Collection, the artist built an entirely new wall with a blackout doorway created by a black sheet of plexi. The opening becomes a metaphor for what lies beyond our existence. This same element exits in A Folded Bed, 2009 in which a portable folding bed is intersected by a large sheet of the same black plexi. The black plane once more is a metaphor for a void. In A Bedroom Floor, 2009 the artist has recreated the exact tile grid of his adolescent bedroom floor. A nod to Carl Andre, the work uses its own detachment and “negative space” properties to focus on the floor and its plight in its original context.

Leyden Rodriguez-Casanova lives and works in Miami, and has exhibited nationally and internationally. His work has been featured in publications such as Art in America, ARTnews, and Sculpture Magazine. The artist has recently exhibited at Socrates Sculpture Park and the Sculpture Center in New York, among many other venues.

In the project room, the gallery is proud to present Amir H. Fallah’s Flowers and Terrorists.

The stark juxtaposition of flowery still lifes and political statements confront the severe spectrum the world lives in. Fallah uses familiar colors and collage elements to blur the line between beauty and violence. Fallah’s still lifes “his mother wishes he would paint” are sullied through his chaotic use of explosive color, while the terror-themed paintings are calmed by the easier transitions of subtle colors.

In the David Castillo Annex, Amir H. Fallah constructs a single tower of objects from found materials in Miami. In this installation as in his paintings, the artist combines the subjects of still lifes and political statements, re-enforcing the dialogue between them. The site-specific installation is a commentary on how beauty and terror are ultimately conjoined in life.

The Los Angeles-based artist has exhibited nationally and internationally. He is also the publisher of the contemporary arts magazine Beautiful/Decay. Fallah received his B.F.A. from The Maryland Institute College of Art and his M.F.A from UCLA in 2005. He was included in the 2009 Sharjah Biennial.

Dutes Miller and Stan Shellabarger are the two artist that together form, Miller & Shellabarger. Miller & Shellabarger will be the 10th artists to participate in Diet’s invitational series of exhibitions. Their work, which is often rooted in accessible performances, links them together as partners, procreators, specimens, and artists. Miller & Shellabarger take a comical, yet heartfelt everyday approach to the notion of collaboration. For their exhibition at Gallery Diet, Dutes and Stan will be performing Untitled (Pink Tube), a never ending, at least not to date, performance in which the duo sit across from each other patiently knitting a pink tube, their casual demeanor encouraging audience members to join them in conversation; inviting questions that range from the socio political to the mundane. The ritual of their performance lies in the ritual of the everyday, the casual tasks that two people perform when linked together.

Opening Reception at ArtCenter for The Flying Carpet by Pip & Duane Brant 9/5/09

carpet
The Flying Carpet
Pip & Duane Brant
Opening night on Saturday, September 5 from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. coincides with the Lincoln Road art walk
Pip Brant’s carpet is comprised of a found oriental rug, embroidery, silkscreen, brass ornaments, wood, car parts, electric motor, laser-light and rheostat controllers. The rug first entered Pip’s life in the early 1980s in Wyoming. The many adventures of Pip’s carpet were just taking shape when she had an epiphany: she would create an impotent “flying carpet” that only shakes and lights-up when foot pedals are engaged.
Duane’s installation pieces are dubbed “Sew Organs’ or interactive acoustical sound machines. In addition to the flying carpet, ArtCetner’s audience will be invited to play with these instruments that combine vintange sewing machines with shellacked, wooden acoustic forms that are electronically connecte to organs, cellos or old radios.
The show will run from September 4th – Ocotober 11th, 2009 at the ArtCenter/ South Florida’s Lincoln Road Gallery.

CS Gallery exhibition by Nicaraguan-American artist Roger Danilo Carmona opening 8/28/09

ROGER DANILO CARMONA
Open-Source Meme
August 28 – September 25, 2009
Chirinos Sanchez is pleased to present an exhibition of works on paper by Nicaraguan-American artist Roger Danilo Carmona.
This is the artist’s first solo exhibition in our gallery. The artist previously curated the exhibition “Fresh Ingredients”, in our first gallery exhibition debut in August 2007.
(Image Title: Mustard Seed and Yogurt Pullao, 2007, Gofun, crayon, oil on paper)
For the current show, the artist splits the gallery into three sections: The Pyramid, The Character and The Action.
Upon entering the gallery to the left, The Pyramid consists of a collection of twenty-eight works on paper made within the last two years. The Pyramid is seen as a surrogate of a social response, where each drawing requests an act of open conversation. The form of the upside-down pyramid, in its bizarre composition and language, is reminiscent of a structure which the artist’s ancestors – possibly Mayan – built. The colorful gesture and fresh compositions in some of the drawings contradict the communication which other drawings of a more serious, hermitic action make the viewer consider.
To the right of the gallery, The Character consists of five “portraits”. In the initial appearance of the drawings, the forms are much more complex in their character than the opposite wall. The artist speaks of these drawings “as individuals that crave a position of higher power. The ways in which the forms are drawn are examples of the type of “Bernie Madoff” characters that walk among us.” These drawings were made during the artist’s study at The Milton Avery School of Arts, Bard College in upstate New York, where he is a 2010 MFA candidate.
The third section of the gallery represents The Action. The work consists of two drawings that meet in the corner. The meeting is seen as a conflict that establishes territory through repetitive discourse.
Roger Danilo Carmona (b. 1983 Leon, Nicaragua) lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.

Photographs – Chamizo Gallery and Gables Art Walk

{So, we went to down to the Chamizo Gallery to see our good friend Gapal, and of course we met some new friends. Then we noticed that the other galleries were open and crowded and realized that it was the Coral Gables Art Walk. So, we wandered around for a bit. Surprisingly, this was one of the best Gables Art Walks that we have been to, event though it was an off weekend, with the holiday.}

You can also see the photos in the Gallery.

Photographs – Little Havana Art Walk

{Okay, did anyone else know how cool this thing is? We all talk about Wynwood and Design District and the Gables, but you hardly ever hear anything about the art walk down on Calle Ocho. Meanwhile, they have been building quite the arts district down there. They call it Viernes Culturales Cultural Fridays. It is more than just galleries, there is music and restaurants, and even a cabaret. It was cold the night we went, so I imagine that it would normally be even busier than it was, but it was still pretty bustling. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.}

More photos here.

Nice courtyard by a large art and research center. Looks like they normally do music here.

Photographs – Coral Gables Gallery Walk, Richie Rich at Provocateur, Shelborne, and Bernice Steinbaum Gallery

{Hmm… so, yes, I am probably the only blogger on the planet not posting New Year’s Eve photos. I am sure you have seen plenty of photos of fireworks. However, we did see Brendan O’Hara, who I highly recommend.Anyway, skipping ahead to the Coral Gables Gallery Walk that was not. We received emails that the Coral Gables Gallery Walk was going on as regularly scheduled for the first Friday, 1/2/09. Little did we know that it was postponed due to NYE. Anyway, we ran into a few nice galleries including miArte and Gallery Z.}

{Then we went over to Provocateur to see a live musical performance by Richie Rich of Heatherette. It was interesting.}

{Next Friday, 1/9/09, we went to the new Happy Hour at The Lounge at Shelborne. Good friends and good times. And good drink prices.}

{Then we headed over to the Bernice Steinbaum Gallery for the Art of Fashion show. Very good.}

{Then they had an afterparty at Prive.}

All of the galleries here.

Photographs – Earthdance & September Wynwood Art Walk

Well, only a month behind, but finally got the photos up from September Wynwood Art Walk and the Earthdance Miami event at Soho Studios. As always, Wynwood was great, and the Earthdance was much better than we expected.

The Wynwood Art Walk has gotten SO out of hand. We can remember a couple years ago where there were a few other folks on the street, and you would be joined in any gallery with half a dozen to a dozen other people. But these days, the streets are swarmed and sometimes you have to literally kick your way through the crowds in galleries to see the art. Locust Projects nearly got shut down by the Fire Marshall for being over occupancy.

Looking forward to next month!

Photographs – Level 25, Wynwood, And More

Crazy weekend.

Started Friday at Level 25 for some really nice Happy Hour.

Saturday went to Wynwood Art Walk, Unzipped at Midtown and The Fifth.
Thanks, as always, to Gerry Kelly for his awesome hospitality at The Fifth.

Our good friend, Jipsy aka Nefarious Girl, headed over to Poplife at the White Room for the Wynwood afterparty.

Not much this week till Thursday. Take a break and watch some Olympics!
