Bold comedienne and dance theater artist Sara Juli delves into her own experience to explore the painful, hilarious decay of a once-promising marriage. Romping through a campy pink set, this “light of the downtown dance and theater scene” (The New Yorker) fearlessly channels over-the-top humor and personal emotion with warmth and vulnerability, creating an “imaginative and brave show” (Broadway Baby) for audiences nationwide.

Stage Mother, a new comedy-drama starring Oscar-nominated Jacki Weaver (Silver Linings Playbook, Animal Kingdom), Adrian Grenier (Entourage, The Devil Wears Prada) and Emmy-Nominated Lucy Liu (Charlie’s Angels, Elementary, Ally McBeal), will kick-off the 22nd edition of the OUTshine LGBTQ+ Film Festival on Thursday, August 20, at 7 p.m. This special OUTshine Opening Night Drive-OUT preview at Dezerland Drive-In in North Miami (the film will be released to the public on August 21) will launch a celebration of diversity and equality with 80 thought-provoking films from 20 countries, (many never-seen-before and not available on any streaming platform) accessible via 44 screenings available from August 20 – 30, 2020. A livestreamed Q& A session will follow the film.

Stage Mother tells the story of Maybelline (Jacki Weaver), a conservative Texas church-choir director who inherits her recently deceased son’s drag club. She surprises her closed-minded husband and everyone else she knows by moving alone to San Francisco to save the club from bankruptcy. In this raucous, racy new environment, she begins to open-up and finds new meaning for her life, even becoming a mother-figure to the club’s flamboyant performers. In addition to Adrian Grenier and Lucy Liu, the film also stars, Mya Taylor (Tangerine) and the legendary Jackie Beat.

Stage Mother was a winner of the Best of the Fest Audience Vote at the Palm Springs International Film Festival and winner of the Next Wave Award from the Provincetown International Film Festival.

The 22nd edition of the OUTshine LGBTQ+ Film Festival, a bi-annual film festival whose mission is to unite the community through social events and LGBTQ+ media that inspire, entertain, and educate, is going virtual! For the first time in the organization’s history, 80 new contemplative, comedic and creative films from 20 countries, (many never-seen-before and not available on any streaming platform) with 44 screenings will be made available to viewers throughout the state of Florida from August 20 – 30, 2020. The festival will also host livestreamed special events with cocktail happy hours, talent and Q & A sessions as a way to virtually tie the community together.

Lips, the ultimate in drag dining, is excited to welcome the community back to the perfect place for any celebration when it officially reopens at 7 p.m. on Thursday, June 25, in compliance with local and state COVID 19 guidelines. In the tradition of Lips, the incredible cast will sashay on stage, deliver delicious dining options and pour signature drinks from Thursday through Saturday nights and for Sunday Brunch, until further notice. Sales from the reopening night will benefit all Lips employees as they make their glamorous return.

In keeping with the tradition of Lips’ nightly themed shows, the reopening will kick off with “Dinner with the Divas.” Lips’ talented cast of characters will impersonate past and present divas such as Cher, Pink, Donna Summer, Nikki Minaj and many others. Other theme nights include Game Night (Tuesday), Twisted Broadway (Wednesday), Glitz & Glam (Friday and Saturday), “Dinner with the Divas” (Thursday and Sunday) and Lips’ drag-a-licious Gospel Brunch (Sunday).

Guests will enjoy a delicious dinner from a popular drag-themed menu of salads, appetizers and entrees, including Chicken Marsala, Atlantic Salmon, Baby Back Ribs, Garden Vegetable Curry, Mushroom or Lobster Ravioli. No Place Like Home welcomes back three comedians who got their start here in Miami but have moved on to bigger and better, doing amazing things in other cities. We’re clicking our ruby slippers three times and bringing them home for the holidays so that you can see how they’ve evolved in their time away.

For the first edition we have comedians coming down from New York, each one having their own special relationship with their hometown Miami. Our headliner Plus Pierre has toured internationally, performing solo as well as part of a group show “Coming Through America.” Our two features. Irene Morales and Paul Julmeus have hosted their own rooms in NY as well as Miami, and worked on a variety of TV, Film, and online projects since leaving home.

We can’t forget our ride or die Miamians who still live down here, so we’re bringing out local staples Julie Baez (who recently opened for Tiffany Haddish) and Reginald Desjardins (host of a number of beloved local theme shows) to open up the show, along with “305 till he mother-lovin’ dies” Danny “Miami” Reyes as host.

Come out to relive the glory days, or to discover some amazing talent that was born and/or bred in our own back yard, spreadin’ that Miami swagger all across the globe for us!

Myers grew up in Columbia, Maryland and began his comedy career at the age of 18 at Winchester’s Pub in Baltimore.[1] In 2005 he won the “Funniest Person in Baltimore” contest.[2] Myers later moved to Florida where he was named 2011 Florida’s Funniest Comedian.

Dustin Chafin was born in a doublewide trailer in Kilgore, Texas; son of a used-car salesman and a beautiful and wild hippy child; grandson of Choctaw Native Americans: Dustin Chafin is both Cowboy and Indian.

He’s made many television appearances including HBO and Comedy Central. You can see him performing live in Wynwood for one night only!

Special Guest Appearance by David Del Rosario

David Del Rosario has always been a comedic performer. Described as a freeform high energy character driven comic with an edge, in 2005 he had already performed improv and his first stand up comedy acts alongside Comedy Central Present’s very own Al Jackson. In 2009, David created the live sketch comedy show “Category Seven” and then joined Just The Funny Theatre in 2010. In 2011, as a member of the JTF Theater main stage cast; he was given the ability to redefine sketch and improv comedy as a member of the team “Special In A Bad Way”. The group has gone on to receive notoriety in The Miami Herald & The New Times.

10 Days of Connection is a community-led initiative to promote kindness and inclusion in Miami-Dade and Broward counties. From May 1-10, participants are invited to attend connection experiences hosted by more than 100 local organizations, and are challenged to step outside of their comfort zone to forge new connections across lines of difference.

In recent years, people have become increasingly divided across lines of difference. Incidents of hate have increased, and tolerance for differing ideas has decreased. For ten days each year, we challenge the entire community to break down silos and engage in acts of connection, to build empathy, to increase understanding, and to refocus on our shared humanity.

From 4-7 pm, local artists will perform 45-minute sets at select Inner Loop stops of the Metromover and satellite locations, including the Alfred Dupont Building, Sparky’s Roadside Barbecue and Miami Center for Architecture and Design. Starting at 6pm the Lynn and Louis Wolfson II Florida Moving Image Archives will be screening historical Miami footage in Bayfront Park. Wednesday Night Live is where you can see nationally touring stand up comedians on their night off, and during your midweek. This show is growing to be the most exclusive comedy night in Miami; happening only once a month and located inside the Drinkhouse Fire and Ice Bar.

After the show guests are encouraged to visit the Ice bar for a one-of-a-kind experience! You can come as is – we will provide you will be faux-fur coats and gloves before entering the 23-degree winter wonderland built from an unbelievable 100,000 pounds of ice. ArtServe presents Open Mic Tuesdays hosted by the inimitable Michelle Rose Domb. We welcome talent from all walks of life: actors, singers, musicians, dancers, spoken word poets, comedians and more. There’s a mic, a barstool, a spotlight… all we need is you!

Stand up comedians and graff writers have a lot in common – both hustling nonstop to make their visions a reality. This coming Sunday at Yo Space Gallery & Studios we’re going to prove it by throwing these two cultures a shindig where these artforms can thrive.
This innovative new night will welcome graffiti writers and street artists to swap slaps and sketchbooks (think: Writer’s Bench http://www.at149st.com/bench.html) and add in an open mic starting midway into the night, including comedy, spoken word, music and more.
Hosted by comics Regi Desjardins and Abe Perez, there’ll be plenty going on to keep you entertained while you get down in a sketchbook or trade some stickers with fellow collectors.
We’ll have refreshments, and as always ping pong table and N64 to fill in the gaps and everything else you need for a laid back good time.
