MOCA North Miami Hosts Haitian Independence Day Celebration Featuring Inez Barlatier, Jan Sebon and Fabienne Josaphat
Friday, 01/01/2021-, 07:00 pm-

Cost: Free

In honor of Haitian Independence Day, the Museum of Contemporary Art North Miami (MOCA) is proud to host Haitian-American multidisciplinary artist Inez Barlatier, musician and surrealist visual artist Jan Sebon, and author Fabienne Josaphat for an intimate program of music and poetry on Jan. 1. This virtual performance coincides with the museum’s current exhibition “Life & Spirituality in Haitian Art: Selection from the Betty and Isaac Rudman Trust Collection,” on view through March 14, 2021.

Initiated by the voodoo ceremony of Bois Caïman on the night of August 14, 1791, The Haitian Revolution represents one of the key turning points in the history of the western world and human rights. Led by enslaved Africans in the French colony of Saint Domingue, the revolution resulted in the abolition of slavery in the colony, the first to do so in the western world, and the birth of Haiti on January 1 of 1804. Today, Haitian in Haiti and the diaspora celebrate their Independence in honor of a line of ancestors that fought for their freedom. At the center of the celebration is Soup Joumou, a traditional soup that becomes a symbol of their freedom. MOCA North Miami is pleased to celebrate our Haitian community.

The acts include:

Inez Barlatier is a Haitian-American multidisciplinary artist. At the age of 12 years old, she joined her father’s band, Jan Sebon & Kazak International. Inez later led her own band, Kazoots, for 6 years. She has received a Knight Arts Champion, a L.E.A.P. and an Artist Relief grant supporting her ongoing projects. Inez developed a children’s show entitled “Ayiti: Stories & Songs from Haiti” which was selected as a Spotlight presentation at the 2020 International Performance Art for Youth Conference.

Jan Sebon is a musician and visual artist from Haiti. He is a staple in Miami as pioneering Haitian Jazz music in Miami with his band Koleksyon Kazak. Sebon has hosted political radio shows in Haiti resulting in him being exiled and moving to Miami at the age of 22. He later became an activist and community organizer, fighting for Haitian immigrant rights and hosting another radio show on WDNA in Miami. He has been performing in Miami for over 30 years and has toured internationally while being a former board member at the Miami Light Project. Sebon is also a masterful African and Haitian drummer and surrealist visual artist.

Fabienne Josaphat is the author of Dancing in the Baron’s Shadow, a debut novel released with Unnamed Press and translated into French by Calmann-Levy. Her essay, Summer is an Empty House, recently made the Notable Essays mentions in Best American Essays 2016. Her fiction, non-fiction and poetry have been featured in the African American Review, The Master’s Review, Grist Journal, Damselfly, Hinchas de Poesia, Off the Coast Journal and The Caribbean Writer, as well as in Eight Miami Poets, a Jai-Alai Books poetry anthology. She was recently a national juror for the 2019 Scholastic Awards. She lives in South Florida.

The panel will be free and open to the public via the Zoom video conferencing platform.

Rocking a red ribbon not only completes any outfit; it shows everyone – especially people living with HIV and their families – your support. On Tuesday, December 1 at 8:30 a.m. The World AIDS Museum and Educational Center (WAM) will present the official kick-off to World AIDS Day, founded in 1988 and themed this year as Rock the Ribbon. Hosted by The Galleria at Fort Lauderdale, the event will feature special guests Chuck Panozzo, Styx rock band member, and Laura Vivas, recording artist and former contestant on The Voice.

World AIDS Museum will gather elected officials, fellow HIV-related agencies and other stakeholders. Attendees will embrace this community gathering with special performances by Laura Vivas and the Fort Lauderdale Gay Men’s Chorus under the direction of Gary Keating. DJ Aulden Brown will add his flair to rock the crowd.

Special guest Styx rock band member Chuck Panozzo will be one of the voices heard as to why this day is so important. Charles Salvatore “Chuck” Panozzo is an American musician best known as the bass player for the rock band Styx. A longtime member of Styx, he founded the group with his fraternal twin brother, drummer John Panozzo, who died in July 1996, and singer/keyboardist Dennis De Young. He toured part-time from 1999 to 2003, and currently tours with Styx on a regular basis.

Chuck Panozzo is openly gay and has been out since 2001. That year, he also announced that he is living with HIV, and has been involved in campaigning for AIDS awareness and gay rights. In 2006, he spoke with Frontiers for the first time about his decision to come out. The following year, he released his autobiography “The Grand Illusion: Love, Lies, and My Life with Styx.”

Laura Vivas will offer a live performance that will coincide with the rock theme. Her blind audition on NBC’s hit show The Voice, Season 3, resulted in a spot on Christina Aguilera’s team. A native of Puerto Rico, Vivas’ career began at age 18 singing back-up for local artists. Since 2007, she has been the lead singer and the lone female in a six-piece South Florida cover band called Re-Mix. She has opened for artists such as Roberta Flack, Chaka Khan, Bruce Hornsby and more.

The event, sponsored by The Galleria at Fort Lauderdale, Seasons 52, Michael Murphy Photography and GPR | Goodman Public Relations, will be open to the public and take place outdoors under the covered valet parking entrance. Facial coverings will be required. Attendees are encouraged to register in advance at www.worldaidsmuseum.org.

History Fort Lauderdale, proud steward of our community’s past by making our heritage accessible and engaging to residents and visitors, will present, “Where the Boys Are,” an exclusive 60th anniversary film photo exhibition at The Galleria at Fort Lauderdale. Opening on Wednesday, December 3, this free retrospective will feature 40 curated historical and never-before-seen oversized images chronicling the making of and local star-studded premiere (December 21, 1960) of the landmark film that cemented the City of Fort Lauderdale as a worldwide Spring Break destination. The walk-through exhibit will be available for the public to view near Swarovski until January 3, 2021.

Visitors to The Galleria at Fort Lauderdale will delight in seeing the making of Where the Boys Are, the 1960 American CinemaScope comedy directed by Henry Levin, via a variety of slice-of-life and candid on-set images enlarged for detail. These include captures of local resident and actress Connie Francis (who sang the film’s memorable title theme), as well as stars Dolores Hart, Paula Prentiss, George Hamilton, Yvette Mimieux, Jim Hutton, and Frank Gorshin. Some photos were captured on the actual site of The Galleria, then an open-air shopping center called the Sunrise Center. Many photos feature local South Florida extras and regional film crew who were called-upon to star and work on the film.

Funding is provided in part by Broward County Board of County Commissioners as recommended by the Broward County Cultural Council and Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention & Visitors Bureau. This organization is sponsored, in part, by the State of Florida, Department of State, Division of Cultural Affairs and the Florida Council of Arts and Culture.

The Salvation Army of Broward County is seeking to fill 125 seasonal paid bell ringer positions at its Holiday 2020 Job Fair on November 4. South Florida residents with a positive outlook and an affinity for philanthropy and fun are encouraged to apply.

Synonymous with the Christmas season, “ringing the bell” at a Salvation Army Red Kettle has been a tradition since 1895. It’s not just about ringing a bell, however. All proceeds from the Kettle stay in Broward County and support the Salvation Army’s feeding, shelter and social service programs. Last year, the nonprofit organization raised more than $213,205 for the Greater Fort Lauderdale community.

The Job Fair screenings will comply with CDC-approved COVID-19 social distancing guidelines and applicants will be required to wear a mask. Bell Ringers will be selected for employment for the holiday period of November 13 – December 24.

The Red Kettle Bell Ringers program is only part of the nonprofit organization’s efforts to help those less fortunate. Last year’s Angel Tree Program secured and distributed more than 8,046 toys to 1,061 families with diminished resources. The Salvation Army is actively assisting thousands of residents-in-need through its Food Pantry during the COVID-19 pandemic. Each Thursday, trusted Army experts provide non-perishable items and other pantry goods to more hundreds of underserved families. The organization also provides meals-to-go services for the homeless, its residents and other impoverished individuals.

The Salvation Army is a 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to “meeting human needs without discrimination.” For more information or to make a donation, visit www.salvationarmyflorida.org/fortlauderdale or call (954) 524-6991. South Florida’s favorite Halloween show, IT’S JUST A BUNCH OF HOCUS POCUS* (previously Hocus Pocus Live) is landing at The Kelsey Theater in Lake Park for two nights of holiday fun on October 30 and 31 (performances are at 7 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. each night; each runs 1 hour and 15 minutes). Tickets are on sale with the opportunity to save $10.

Following eight consecutive years of instant sell-outs, the wildly popular all-ages tribute show brings Halloween’s most beloved classic to life with incredible detail. The audience is invited to take a dive into ‘90s nostalgia as South Florida’s top drag performers transform into the film’s iconic characters. All are invited to join this limited-seating, socially distanced event as they tell the story of three wacky witches, accidentally resurrected by teen pranksters on Halloween night in 1993. The dynamic lead cast includes Nicole Halliwell as Winifred Sanderson, Calypso Monroe as Sarah Sanderson and Nicky Monet as Mary Sanderson.

Produced and created by South Florida’s drag mastermind Nicole Halliwell (TLC’s I am Jazz, America’s Got Talent, Queenz The Drag Experience), IT’S JUST A BUNCH OF HOCUS POCUS boasts intricately detailed sets, eerily uncanny lookalikes, replica props and costuming, and more in this immersive stage spectacle. Going light years beyond your standard “drag show,” there’s nothing quite like this! Prior to each performance, audiences can enjoy “Wicked Villains,” a “delightfully evil preshow,” starring the cast of QUEENZ The Drag Experience as even more fabulous female impersonators transform into such favorite cartoon villains like Maleficent, Ursula, Cruella DeVille, and The Evil Queen.

Tickets are now on sale starting at $65 for general admission, and $75 for “front row” VIP, which includes a souvenir gift pack. To save $10 off any ticket, use coupon code SAVE10 at checkout to unlock discounted tickets which can be purchased by visiting www.hocuspocuslive.net, by calling The Kelsey Theater at (561) 328-7481, or the Boca Black Box Theater at (561) 483-9036. Performance tickets will be limited to comply with COVID-19 community health and safety guidelines. Proceeds from ticket sales will benefit the show’s displaced and furloughed cast of entertainers due to the pandemic. *Celebrity impersonators, no affiliation with the Walt Disney Company.

in your own space to “krush” poverty and homelessness in Broward County! The Salvation Army of Broward County will go virtual for its rescheduled third annual Kettle Krush 5K, September 19 – 26, designed to raise awareness and funds for families in need. Registration is open, now, at tinyurl.com/BrowardKettleKrush2020.

The Salvation Army serves over 15,000 Broward County residents, every year, and more than 70% of its funding comes directly from the community – individuals, groups and businesses.

The race is named after The Salvation Army’s iconic Red Kettles which are staffed during the holidays to collect funds for families in need. Last year, The Salvation Army of Broward County raised $213,205 in just five short weeks in November and December. In addition to the Kettle Krush 5K and the holiday Red Kettle program, The Salvation Army of Broward County feeds hundreds of families through its annual free Thanksgiving meal initiative in partnership with The Cheesecake Factory, and distributes over 8,000 gifts to over 2,100 children though its Angel Trees and Holiday Toy Shop.

Registration fees for the third annual Kettle Krush Virtual 5K are $10 for kids (ages 2 – 8), $20 per participant (18 and under) and $25 for registrants (19 and over). Team registration is $20 per person for teams of three or more. The first 100 participants will receive a commemorative t-shirt. T-shirts can be picked-up, in advance, during a special drive-through at The Salvation Army of Broward Area Command, 1445 West Broward Blvd Fort Lauderdale, on Wednesday, September 16 (3 – 7 p.m.), Thursday, September 17 (11 a.m. – 2 p.m.) and Friday, September 18 (4 p.m. – 8 p.m.).
The virtual event will feature a live leader board link updated every two minutes with real-time tabulation of overall, gender and age group categories provided by AccuChipUSA, Inc. and awards will be given to runners within the “top 3” categories and age groups.

During the virtual race time window, The Salvation Army of Broward encourages participants to email selfies, photos or short videos of their personal race with the hashtag #BrowardKettleKrush2020 for consideration to be posted on the organization’s social media sites. Participants can also display their chosen racecourse by uploading maps from the following fitness app trackers: Strava, Garmin, Polar, MapMyRun, RunKeeper, MovesCount, EndoMondo and TomTom Sports (course maps will be publicly viewable).

The Salvation Army of Broward County Virtual Kettle Krush 5K is sponsored by FPL, Fast Printz, Forney Construction, Edd Helms Group, Acme Barricades and Bimbo Bakeries.

The Bass initiates a new program titled New Monuments by adding a fifth plinth to Collins Park and calling for artists to create a temporary new monument. Who or what should be memorialized on a plinth in Miami Beach, in the United States, or globally? In 2020? For the next five years, this initiative will invite five artists to answer this question with a work of art that will be on view in Collins Park for approximately 10-12 months each. The following open call for artist submissions is for the first year. Subsequent calls will be announced annually. The selection process will be made by the museum’s curatorial team.

The Bass pays for all costs relating to the selected project including production costs, engineering, installation and maintenance. The selected artist will also receive a $5,000 honorarium. If a duo or group is selected, the honorarium will be divided evenly amongst the group.

The call is open to any artist living or working in Miami-Dade County. Applications from Black, Indigenous, and/or People of Color (BIPOC) artists are strongly encouraged. The deadline to apply is September 1, 2020 at 5 PM EDT.

History Fort Lauderdale, proud steward of our community’s past by making our heritage accessible and engaging to residents and visitors, will present “The Art of Tim Forman: Beachscapes” from Sunday, July 5 – Sunday, September 27. Forman’s colorful and impressionist coastal-inspired works will be on display at the New River Inn (231 Southwest Second Avenue).

The grandson of renowned Davie dairy farmer, Hamilton Forman, Tim grew up in South Florida. Some of his favorite pastimes were visiting the beach, fishing in Biscayne Bay with his dad, and stargazing. He first picked-up the brush at nine years old under the instruction of Peter Olsen. By 17, Forman was receiving commissions. Primarily a self-taught artist, Forman’s work is the result of dedicated practice. He uses field sketches, plein air paintings, and photographs to compose his pieces that are painted in layers with both knife and brush. He creates his landscapes to portray the splendor and simplicity of the natural world around us. Through his work, Tim seeks to lift the spirits and inspire awe above our day-to-day lives.

In compliance with local and state health guidelines, visitors will be required to wear a mask and practice safe social distancing of six feet apart. Hand sanitizer will be available at the front desk admission point and all surfaces will be thoroughly cleaned multiple times a day. Additionally, guests will be asked to sign-in, daily, for contact tracing.

Entry to the exhibit is free with general admission – $15 for adults; $12 for seniors and $7 for students (through age 22 with a valid student ID). Admission is always free for members, military and children ages six and under. Tickets are available online at http://bit.ly/HistoryFortLauderdaleTickets.

History Fort Lauderdale, proud steward of our community’s past by making our heritage accessible and engaging to residents and visitors, will reopen to the public on June 15, just in time to celebrate National Caribbean-American Heritage Month. The attraction will present “The Island Imprint: The Art and History of the Caribbean Community in Broward County,” a historical fine art exhibition produced by cultural nonprofit Island SPACE (islandspacefl.org) through June 29 in The New River Inn (231 SW Second Avenue).

This second staging in a multiyear initiative celebrating Broward County’s Caribbean heritage displays the works of three artist-contributors. Photo artist and curator David I. Muir (Jamaica) shares a selection of photos from the “Caribbean-American” collection, printed on canvas and featuring Caribbean scenes around Broward County. Two-time photography participant Sonya Sanchez-Arias (Trinidad) shares pieces from her “Fragments” collection, in which images she has captured from the Caribbean region are digitally manipulated, printed on metal, and mounted on natural, reclaimed materials. Mixed-media artist Krystle Sabdul (Jamaica) has included a variety of expressive, oversized portraits. The historical aspect of the exhibition, curated by Calibe Thompson (Jamaica), traces the Caribbean community’s roots in Broward through news clippings, archival photos and information displaying the influence of diverse island people on the vibrant fabric of Greater Fort Lauderdale.

Support for the project has been provided, in part, by the Broward County Cultural Division and the following Funds at the Community Foundation of Broward: Helen and Frank Stoykov Charitable Endowment Fund, David and Francie Horvitz Family Fund, Ann Adams Fund, Mary and Alex Mackenzie Community Impact Fund, Blockbuster Entertainment Unrestricted Fund, Robert E. Dooley Unrestricted Fund for Broward, Harold D. Franks Fund and Jan Moran Unrestricted Fund.

History Fort Lauderdale is proud to showcase a variety of annual multicultural exhibits highlighting African American, Caribbean and Latin artists sharing their views of history. Permanent exhibits include “The Bryans of Fort Lauderdale” which allows guests to experience the story of the City of Fort Lauderdale as told through the pioneer family that shaped its development from an agricultural outpost in 1896 to a bustling city in the 1920s to its current status as a leading Metropolis, “Juliette Lange: A Portrait of a Mezzo Soprano,” a fashion and lifestyle glimpse of the socially prominent Fort Lauderdale resident with a lauded career as a star vocalist of musical comedy, plus “Archaeology of the New River” and a multitude of narratives and photos sharing the history of other founding families of Fort Lauderdale.

Admission to “The Island Imprint: The Art and History of the Caribbean Community in Broward County” is free with History Fort Lauderdale general museum admission – $15 for adults; $12 for seniors and $7 for students (through age 22 with a valid student ID). Indiegals
Every indie needs a hand, and we¹ve partnered with artists from all over to bring a uniquely curated expo of artisanal goods, earthy designs, and conscious driven showcases. We¹ve connected with the indigenous tribe from Valle de Sibundoy in the Alto Putumayo region of Colombia, to bring the tribe’s delicately handcrafted jewelry, organic essential oils, and raw incense, led by the tribe¹s artist Yolimar Loreto & the tribe-women. Also from Colombia, we present for the first time in the U.S Hagakure Home a small company based in Medellin whose home décor is derived from organic materials, raw fabrics, and designed with earthy elements. We¹re bringing goods for the home and lifestyle. Then a young, hip, and hippie indie group of artists called Gypsy Halos will be dancing around our tent expressing their love and spirit through flower crowns, leafy jewelry designs, and airy fashions. This movement is not just focused on the younger generation. We¹ve connected with our baby boomer warrior woman who¹s love for mother Earth has helped her develop an artistic eye for floral designs; Esperanza (Hope) will bring to our expo her creative orchid, succulents, air flower gardens. Last but not least, our tent will feature an art showcase called Monsterz, an Anti-bullying picturesque story created by Miami’s local Tuli. We will feature other random goodies, our farmer friends may stop by with organic goods, or maybe we¹ll have a pop-up artist color us alive! This is what Indie Gals does, we dig deep into the roots and help elevate indie creatives so that we can all break through the noise. Everyone deserves to feel the sunshine of success on their face.

Clinton Global Initiative University Day Of Action 3/8/15

Clinton Global Initiative University Day Of Action
Sunday, March 8th
Liberty City,
Miami, FL

President Bill Clinton, Former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, and Chelsea Clinton will be hosting the eighth annual Clinton Global Initiative University (CGI U) meeting, which will bring together more than 1,000 college students from around the world on March 6-8 at the University of Miami in Coral Gables, Florida.

In partnership with Miami Children’s Initiative (MCI) in Liberty City and the University of Miami, on Sunday, March 8th, President Bill Clinton and Chelsea Clinton will host the Clinton Global Initiative University Day of Action, a day of volunteering to give back to the community.

More than 700 CGIU students will work on neighborhood and school improvement projects ranging from urban agriculture to revitalizing basketball courts and painting murals. More than 30 projects are expected to be completed. MCI has designated 29 blocks in Liberty City as their “Impact Zone”. CGIU Day of Action will officially expand MCI’s Block-by-Block strategy, within the Impact Zone, from four blocks to eight. These blocks are home to Charles R. Drew K-8 Center, early learning centers, single family homes, public and low income apartments. MCI’s “cradle-to-college-to-career” strategy is focused on intentionally investing in children and their families. We are determined that the future of Liberty City’s children will not be defined by their zip code.

Clinton Global Initiative University:
The Eighth annual Clinton Global Initiative University (CGI U) brings students, innovators, thought-leaders, and civically-engaged celebrities to make a difference in CGIU’s five focus areas: education; environment and climate change; peace and human rights; poverty alleviation; and public health.

University Of Miami:
Since the first CGI U meeting, attendees have made 4,800 Commitments to Action: new, specific, and measurable plans to address challenges on campus, in local communities, or around the world. This growing community of young leaders represents over 875 schools, 145 countries, and all 50 states.

This year, through the CGI University Network, the Resolution Project Social Venture Challenge, and other opportunities, more than $900,000 in funding opportunities will be available to select CGI U 2015 students to help them turn their ideas into action.

The University of Miami first hosted CGI U in 2010 and is the first school to host the event twice. Throughout the meeting, students will engage in various topic-and skill-based sessions, which will empower them to take action in their communities and around the world.

Plenary session topics at CGI U 2015 will include:
Fast Forward: Accelerating Opportunity for All, which will explore how students and universities, in partnerships with the public, private, and civil society sectors, can expand access to opportunity worldwide;
The Power of Big Data, which will examine how CGI U students can harness big data as a tool for addressing global challenges and scaling their existing commitments, as well as expanding access to big data for all; and
The Future of Energy, which will explore how young entrepreneurs can most effectively meet the rising demand for affordable renewable solutions, design the next generation of low-carbon energy technologies, and bring energy efficiency best practices to existing buildings, vehicles, and industrial processes.

CGI U Schedule:
On March 5 and 6, students will have the opportunity to participate in the Clinton Foundation Codeathon in the lead up to the CGI University meeting. The Codeathon will challenge developers and designers to build unique digital prototypes inspired by CGI U Commitments to Action in the areas of Education, Global Health, and Environment & Climate Change. The Codeathon, supported in part by The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, will culminate with team presentations to a panel of expert judges working in the fields of technology and social innovation.

2015 Social Justice Table Community Gathering to discuss World Center project 3/13/15

2015 Social Justice Table Community Gathering to discuss World Center project
Social Justice Community Gathering
Friday, March 13th from 3:30 to 6 pm
Grand Central building
697 N. Miami Ave
Miami, FL 33136
For more information about the program, and to RSVP, please call 786 302 8842.

The Social Justice Table would like to invite you to our next Social Justice Community Gathering, where we will be sharing information about the different ways social justice organizations are effecting change and creating opportunities for low-income, minority communities in the Miami-Dade area.

The Social Justice Table is a network of organizations committed to building collective power to effect positive change in our communities. We realize that while many organizations in Miami-Dade County are committed to addressing injustice and inequality and creating prosperity and opportunity for everyone in our county, much of the work is being done in silos. We recognize that by working together we can be stronger and more effective.

If you are or want to become active in social justice work, as part of an organization or as a concerned individual, you should come to our gathering. We are going to be talking about the Miami Worldcenter, one of the largest urban developments in the United States, which will be built only steps away from our gathering, in the historic African American neighborhood of Overtown. Local elected officials and developers have been harshly criticized for signing a deal that does not create real prosperity for the people of Overtown. Come hear about the efforts underway to ensure the long term interests of local residents are met.

Our partners are working on a number of other issues and campaigns, including efforts to raise the minimum wage, end violence against women and girls, passing responsible wage ordinances, protecting immigrant families from separation and harassment, addressing state violence against minority communities, and many more.

Be a part of the discussion. Create and participate in collective efforts to ensure that justice, equality, prosperity, and opportunity reach everyone in our community, and not just a handful of people. We hope to create collective power to ensure collective gains. Please join us.
