Welcome to the very first Civic Engagement Thursdays blog post! Every Thursday, we bring you the latest events that try to raise awareness and make Miami a better place. Tune in every Thursday to learn about how to get involved within our community.

Today from 6:00PM to 9:00PM, Joseâ€™s Hands and TLS Lounge are teaming up to host #PartyForACause. Come down to TSL Lounge at the Wynwood Art District and help celebrate Joseâ€™s Handsâ€™ five year anniversary. All proceeds will benefit Joseâ€™s Hands Medical Mission Trips. Joseâ€™s Hands is a non-profit organization first created in 2009. Since itâ€™s inception, has been raising money for medical trips to support those in need in the Caribbean and in Latin America. Thanks to generous donations, the organization has been able to attend eight medical mission trips and served thousands of people with no cost medical care. The theme of the night will be Latin Night and black attire is requested. So come, have a few drinks, party while raising money for those in need.

When: Thursday, October 16^th from 7PM to 2AM

Where: TSL Lounge, 167 NW 23^rd St, Miami FL 33127

Dress code: Black Attire (not black tie).

Not in My Name is the creation of MCDC Artistic Director Ray Sullivan, a moving
choreography about holy war and the unconquerable human spirit inspired by months of viewing sacred works of art in Italy. With a new commissioned score by New York composer Kevin Keller.

Rooms of Suspicion is Paolo Mohovichâ€™s look at what happens behind closed doors,
a seemingly private world of trickery, cheating, and the power of suggestion,
all tied up in elegant costumes in beautiful movie-like scenes.

ZiZi Zabaneh & Fusion Gitana Announce Groundbreaking Caravan of Dancers 2 Theater Event for Weekend of November 14th

International Belly Dance fusion artist ZiZi Zabaneh & Fusion Gitana are happy to be bringing Argentina’s world-renowned Arabic Master Composer and Musician Mario Kirlis to the United States for the first time to perform at the Caravan of Dancers 2 in Miami, Florida, November 14th. Also featured will be top dancers from around the world. Music and dance lovers can hardly wait.

The energy of dance and music can leap across cultural boundaries and open up new experiences like almost nothing else. If anyone understands this power it’s international performer, instructor and choreographer ZiZi Zabaneh & Fusion Gitana, her dance company. Specializing in a fusion of Flamenco Latin, and Tango with Belly Dance they have built a reputation for always bringing a great show. Recently Zabaneh has announced something truly special, a theater event Caravan of Dancers 2, which takes thing yet another step higher bringing Argentina’s Arabic Master Composer and Musician Mario Kirlis to perform along with some of the top guest dance artists. The event is scheduled for Miami, Florida, November 14th and anticipation is very high leading up to the groundbreaking show.

â€œOur goal is to enrich, educate and entertain by providing authentic quality, superior training and performances,â€ commented Zabaneh. â€œOur Caravan of Dancers 2 is going to be all that and more! Mario Kirlis coming and performing with us in Miami is a dream come true.â€

In addition to ZiZi Zabaneh and Fusion Gitana dancing, the guest dancers include Lebanese Simon, Zaina Hart, Jihan Jamal, Andrus Ramir, Valerick Molinary and many more, in a show featuring Flamenco, Tango, Bollywood, Latin and Belly Dance.

The show will be held at Manuel Artime Theater, located at 900 SW 1 ST, Miami, Fl. 33130. Doors open at 7:00pm, with the show starting at 8:00pm. A special Pre Fashion show by international Belly Dance Costume designer Montserrat Saar at 7:30pm. General admission tickets are $25.00.

In a continuous effort to bring to South Florida the most iconic ballets of the Russian repertoire, Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida presents a Tribute to Diaghilev, the art critic, patron, ballet impresario and founder of the Ballets Russes, with three splendid works that translate the spirit of the era.
Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida joins the celebration of the 100th anniversary of Stravinsky’s controversial piece The Rite of Spring, with a new version choreographed by the companyâ€™s Artistic Director, Vladimir Issaev and performed by their magnificent dancers. The production utilizes diverse and unique special effects as moving projections by DMD Studios, with costumes decorated by artist Maria Rivas.
The program also includes Le Spectre de la Rose, a beautiful short ballet about a young woman who dreams of dancing with the spirit of a souvenir rose from her first ball, based on a poem by ThÃ©ophile Gautier. The dances were designed by Michel Fokine and the music is Hector Berlioz’s 1841 orchestration of Carl Maria von Weber’s piano music called “Invitation to the Dance”. LÃ©on Bakst designed the original sets and costumes, which are the basis for Arts Ballet’s designs that have already been recreated at the ateliers of the Mariinsky Theater in Russia.
Finally, the show includes the ballet Petrouchka. Audiences will enjoy this very unique production with music of Stravinsky, costume designs by Jorge Gallardo, and choreography by Issaev himself. The Ballet in one act is set in the middle of a Russian Fair and tells the story of three puppets: Petrouchka, the clown, the Ballerina and, the Moor. All three puppets are commanded by the Charlatan, a sinister, bearded puppeteer and magician, who gives the puppets human emotions.
With this programs Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida will introduce dancers Hirofumi Ikeuchi y Saori Morioka y Takayuki Asai and Lilian Hill performing the leading roles, accompanied by local and international dancers.

One of the longest running Ballroom Dance Competitions in the United States, The Grand National Championships, celebrates its 44th year, October 30-November 2, 2014
This prestigious competition began in Miami Beach in 1970.

The 2014 event is sure to be South Florida’s, Miami’s & Key Biscayne’s most gala Ballroom Dance extravaganza ever, kicking off on Thursday, October 30th, with top Pro-Am dancers from across the country, with a glittering parade of 200 or more Pro- AM dancers and Professional Competitions.

In addition to its 44-year tradition of bringing together Amateur and Pro-Am competitors from across the United States to vie for the title of Grand National Champion, this year’s competition will feature The Grand National Professional Championships. The top ranked professional couples In the United States & World Championship events will compete for this Grand National Title.

â€œWe’re very excited to launch the new championship title for professional dancers of American Ballroom, said Cassandra Schneider, co-organizer of the NDCA Sanctioned 44th Grand National Dancesport Championships.â€Ours is the only Sanctioned Championship Ballroom Dance competition held in South Florida.”

The popularity of television shows like â€œDancing with the Starsâ€ and “So You Think You Can Dance” proves that ballroom dance has captured the passionate attention and the hearts of millions. The Grand National Championships, which hosts many of the top dancers in the U.S., is world famous for its exciting dance shows and hospitality.

Running the Miami event for the twelfth year, Cassandra and Peter Schneider–themselves world-class dancers, judges and promoters–expect more than 200 competitors this year. The Grand Nationalâ€™s judges include World Championship class adjudicators from Great Britain, Australia, Germany, Russia and the USA.

Ballroom dancing is considered both a fine art and a sport. Contestants come from all walks of life, and range from 6 to over 90 years of age. Many older dancers enjoy this discipline for health reasons as well as for the pure joy of dancing. This yearâ€™s dancers will compete in one or more events featuring various dances.
