Design Miami/, the global forum for design, will present its sixth edition this December in a new location in Miami Beach. For the first time in the show’s history, the fair will be staged on Meridian Avenue and 19th Street, adjacent to Art Basel Miami Beach at the Miami Beach Convention Center. This year’s show will offer a more streamlined, seamless experience for the collectors, exhibitors, sponsors and general public that attend both fairs. Design Miami/ has commissioned Moorhead and Moorhead, an emerging, award-winning design studio, to create the show’s temporary structure for its new Miami Beach location. Details on this structure will be announced in the coming weeks.

“Presenting the show in Miami Beach will offer us a new context,” says Wava Carpenter, Acting Director of Design Miami/. “For the past five years, the Miami Design District provided us with a wonderfully creative and nurturing environment in which to grow our brand and the neighborhood will always be an integral part of the Design Miami/ identity. At the same time, we are tremendously excited by the opportunities a move to Miami Beach affords us in terms of evolving our show and making it more accessible to a wider audience.”

Craig Robins, Co-founder and Principal of Design Miami/ states: “The move to Miami Beach will create value for our collectors, exhibitors, sponsors, partners and those who come to take part in our events. The growth of both the Miami Design District and Design Miami/ in recent years has been extraordinary. This move to the Beach will allow the programming in the District to evolve and flourish, while creating an entirely new set of opportunities for Design Miami/.”

In his other role as Chief Executive Officer and President of Dacra, Robins is widely credited with having transformed both South Beach and the Miami Design District into world-renowned centers for cutting-edge art, design, food and fashion, making the fair’s move to Miami Beach especially significant for him.

In 2009, Design Miami/ Basel relocated to Hall 5, in the Messe complex that houses Art Basel in Basel, Switzerland. The response to the proximity from collectors, dealers, and sponsors was overwhelmingly positive, with the 2009 and 2010 Basel shows setting records for Design Miami/ in terms of sales and attendance. A similar response is expected for the move of the upcoming Miami show.

The sixth edition of Design Miami/, opening November 30, 2010, promises to be the most dynamic yet. An eclectic, international mix of participating galleries and bold cultural programming will be announced shortly. For further information, visit www.designmiami.com and www.designmiamiblog.com.

The River Of Art is a wonderful evening of creativity brought to you by Life Is Art, Soul Of Miami and Tony Major Events. Each Wednesday, we feature visual art, music, fashion, performance and more chosen from our local south Florida arts community. Full bar and excellent food are there for your enjoyment, as well. Come by and enjoy an atmosphere of fun and excitement. PLUS, A PORTION OF THE SALES FROM THE EVENING GOES TO SUPPORT THE ARTS IN SOUTH FLORIDA.

THE STATE OF
www.thestateofmusic.com
The State Of is the product of the marriage between Steph Taylor’s edgy piano/synth playing and Nabedi Osorio’s electronic-like live drumming. Their dark pop sensibility is born out of their hometown of Miami, FL and is reminiscent of artists ranging from the Bjork and the Eurythmics to Radiohead and the Cure. Taylor’s style of playing is often percussive and dark where Osorio’s drumming is melodic and when coupled, they create a dynamic sound larger than what’s expected out of two people.

“The State Of exemplifies that oxymoronic moment when something sparse becomes atmospheric – like the most electronic form of analog, or vice versa” -Broward New Times
“South Florida duo the State Of likes to keep pop tunes dark but upbeat. The ladies crank eerily pretty arrangements on the keys and back them with big, electroniclike live drums for a Tori Amos meets LCD Soundsystem effect.” -Tampa Bay Times
“The massive appeal of the State Of comes simply from variety” -Miami New Times

GUSTAVO RAMIREZ
www.facebook.com/pages/Gustavo-Ramirez/114359381795
I’m a 35 year old, mostly self taught visual artist (painter). I grew up in Orlando, Fl. and moved to Miami in 2001. My work mostly expresses and explores my unconscious mind in mostly automatic abstract techniques. I also like to make imagined and real portraits of people.

YAMEL MOLERIO
www.yamelmolerio.com
I was born in Havana, Cuba in 1971. I came to the U.S. in 1980 at the age of 9 during the Mariel boatlift. Since I could remember I’ve always been into art. As a kid, I remember being into drawing cartoons and even drawing anatomical posters for my mom who was a biology teacher. In high school, I started doing graffiti with my friends and it became a way of life during the late eighties. After I got into college I learned about contemporary artists, working with other media and art history. I also learned about adding concept and meaning to a work of art.
In my artwork, I deal with issues important to me by being comical at times instead of in your face political. I reject art styles or working in a specific style. I use imagery that ranges from cartoons to realistic portraiture. I want the message of the piece to be the most important thing. I want the viewer at first to be drawn to the piece and then to question why he/she was attracted to it. Maybe with a dialogue between the viewer and the artwork, the viewer will realize that popular culture has programmed us to think a certain way.

Pecha Kucha Gardenovation at Fairchild 4/25/10

For the first time, Pecha Kucha—an event for designers and innovators to meet, network, and show their work in public—joins Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden’s Food and Garden Festival Sunday, April 25th at 1PM. The panel titled GARDENOVATION: Returning to Your Nature showcases seven of South Florida’s nature inspired artists, designers, and architects who creatively challenge traditional ideas about garden design, technique, and interaction with nature. With 20 Power Point slides shown for 20 seconds each, the panelist will share how nature has inspired them in their work and in return allowed them to learn about their own nature in the process.

About Pecha Kucha
Pecha Kucha was conceived in Tokyo in February 2003 by architects Mark Dytham and Astrid Klein as an event where young designers could meet, network and show their work in public. Over time, it has evolved into a massive celebration of creativity, with events regularly being held in 300 cities including Miami. Last year, more than 6,000 presentations were hosted at over 600 Pecha Kucha events. Drawing its name from the Japanese phrase for the sound of conversation (“chit chat”), the Pecha Kucha format is simple—20 images x 20 seconds—and designed to keep presentations concise and moving at a rapid pace. For more information, visit www.pecha-kucha.org/cities/miami

Pecha Kucha, Japanese for “chit chat” is a high-energy showcase of ideas that started 2003 in Japan. The concept is that each presenter is allowed 20 images in a power point presentation that is shown for 20 second each– giving 6 minutes and 40 seconds of fame before the next presenter is up. This keeps presentations concise, interest level up and gives the opportunity for more people to express their ideas.

Hospitality Design (HD) Magazine, published 10 times a year, is the premier trade magazine serving the field of hospitality design. It connects owners, operators, purchasing agents, designers, and architects involved in the design of hotels, resorts, restaurants, cruise ships, nightclubs/lounges, spas, and all other hospitality-oriented projects. HD continues its 30-plus-year mission to publish the accomplishments of various design teams that collaborate to bring the most innovative examples of new construction and renovation to the industry.

Hospitality Design Boutique Exposition & Conference (HD Boutique): HD’s chic, smart-sized exposition and conference on the SoBe scene. HD Boutique reflects the energy and the influences of Miami Beach and South Beach where Latin, South, and North America converge and act as a barometer of what’s happening in hospitality. It brings together professionals in the hospitality industry through informative conference sessions and packed networking parties, and unveils the newest products in the marketplace on a show floor with smaller sized booths. HD Boutique 2009 will take place September 14-15 at the Miami Beach Convention Center.

Art Loves Architecture: David Adjaye 12/6/08

Art Loves Architecture: David Adjaye
Saturday, December 6, 2008
9 p.m.
A conversation between architect David Adjaye and artists Matthew Ritchie and Teresita Fernandez about art and architecture, moderated by Aaron Betsky, Director, Cincinnati Art Museum,
The Colony Theater, 1040 Lincoln Road, Miami Beach
Invitation cards available at VIP and Information Desks.
Limited seating. Door opens 8.30 p.m.
Information | Florida Office Art Basel Miami Beach
Tel. +1/305-674 1292

This year’s Art Loves Architecture features British architect David Adjaye, who started his internationally respected practice Adjaye Architects in London in 1994. He has collaborated with artists such as Chris Ofili at the Venice Biennale in 2003 and Olafur Eliasson at the Venice Biennale in 2005, and has, among many other projects, completed the Nobel Peace Center, Oslo, in 2005 and the Museum for Contemporary Art, Denver, in 2007. Art Loves Architecture will be a conversation moderated by Aaron Betsky, curator of the 2008 Venice Architecture Biennale, featuring Adjaye with artists Matthew Richie and Teresita Fernandez, who in their work both cross the borders of art and architecture. Richie’s vast installations blur art and architecture, like “The Morning Line” at the 3rd Seville Biennale in 2008, which was developed together with architects Aranda\Lasch and Arup AGU. Artist Teresita Fernandez treats art and architecture as collaborative fields and has engaged in cooperations with architects on various projects. The panel will discuss the roles, responsibilities and authorship in the collaborations that all three of them are undertaking and explore how the ideas of art and architecture converge, what architects and artists can learn from each other, and what kind of practice could potentially emerge from this blurring of previously demarcated practices.

Moss At Design Miami, Part One: Bavaria

MOSS at DESIGN MIAMI, part one: BAVARIA
At Design Miami 2008, Moss will unveil Bavaria, a spectacular new suite from Dutch design team Studio Job. This collection of five marquetry furnishings in Indian Rosewood features intricate and fine multi-colored laser-cut inlays in a bucolic farm motif. With its brightly-coloured symmetrical, ‘book-matched’ inlays, the pieces depict bountiful scenes of farm life, including red barns and silos, horse corrals and dog houses, sunflowers, vegetables, pigs, chickens, and other such iconography. While inspired by 17th and 18th century Bavarian hand-painted furniture and embracing the age old technique of marquetry, Studio Job employed modern technology to laser cut the inlays to achieve a flawlessly executed design and an almost seamless surface. The collection is offered in a limited edition of six pieces per model exclusive internationally to Moss.

Nynke Tynagel and Job Smeets of Studio Job offer Bavaria fresh off the heels of critical and commercial debuts of 2007 which included “Homework” a series of seven bronze sculptures, and “Robber Baron,” five monumental bronze furnishings introduced by Moss at Design Miami 2007. Studio Job was the subject of “Bold” the design team’s first retrospective at the inaugeral exhibition of the design museum Designhuis in the Netherlands and at the “Z33” exhibition in Belgium. They were the solo focus of Moss’s selection for Design Miami/Basel where pieces from “Robber Baron,” “Perished” and the complete suite of “Homework” were exhibited. The marketplace has responded to Studio Job’s signature of blurring lines between art and design as well, with their inclusion, along with works by Ron Arad and Shiro Kuramata, in Christie’s London Fall auction of blue chip contemporary fine art, “Post War & Contemporary Art” sale, the first time Design was included in such a sale.

December 3 – 6

Fernando and Humberto Campana have been awarded Designer of the Year by Design Miami, placing them in the company of previous winners Zaha Hadid, Marc Newson and Tokujin Yoshioka.
The designation is a reflection of the tremendous success the Campanas have had in recent years in both the academic world and in the market for limited edition studio design.
As the exclusive representative of work by the Estudio Campana in North America, Moss has selected works for presentation at Design Miami 2008 which reflect not only some of the most important works they have produced but also typify our long standing collaborative relationship. This shared vision has resulted in works such as a special 34 piece installation of Campane di Campana, a historic project orchestrated by Murray Moss between the Campanas and the Murano glassmaker Venini. Also on exhibition are exclusive variations on two of their most indelible creations, “Favela” and “Corallo,” created for Moss in 2004. Additional works include the “Panda Chair” from the celebrated “Banquette” series, and selections from the acclaimed “Sushi” series.

Lawrence Savage Galleries Adds Contemporary Furniture Designer Andrew Muggleton

Lawrence Savage Galleries, with locations in Coral Gables and the Miami Design District, announced today that it will represent contemporary furniture designer / maker Andrew Muggleton, whose work will be available at both galleries. Savage, who met the designer at a show in Palm Beach, said he was immediately taken with Muggleton’s work, and the two quickly struck a deal. “I just love his furniture and his sense of style,” said Savage, “and I think he will add an exciting new dimension to both galleries.” The galleries are located at 66 N.E. 40th Street, in the Design District, and 4217 Ponce de Leon Blvd. in Coral Gables. Telephone (305) 446-1222.

[Tall Curved Drawers (One Of A Kind) – Makore drawer fronts are framed in Ebonized oak. The drawer handles are carved from Ebonized Oak. Sand blasted glass has been profiled and built into the sides of the drawers. The curved drawers are created by bending thin layers of wood together and gluing them. Dimensions: 60in H X 23in. W X 22in D (Click on image for larger view)]

Andrew Muggleton is a true artisan who creates stunning furniture designs, many of which are one-of-a-kind. In designing his contemporary furniture, Muggleton combines extraordinary woods with metal and glass to create furnishings with spare, elegant lines. Dining room tables and chairs, console tables, beds, entertainment units and sets of drawers are crafted with a nod to comfort and an eye towards beauty. His furniture designs are innovative but not complicated, and usually feature large curves and a mix of materials – solid wood, veneer, metal and glass.

[Aluminum Dining Table – Rectangle dining table made using Bird’s Eye maple and Aluminum curved supports. All dining tables are custom made to order to any size. Materials: Bird’s Eye maple Wood, Aluminum curved supports with a glass top. Dimensions as shown: 64in (L) x 42 (W) x 30in (H) (Click on image for larger view)]

SIMPLIFY, SIMPLIFY, SIMPLIFY
Much like Henry David Thoreau, a complex man of many talents who worked hard to shape his craft and his life, simplicity is a hallmark of Muggleton’s design philosophy. “Keeping a design simple and avoiding the trap of filling empty space with unnecessary clutter is my most difficult – and most rewarding – challenge,” says the British born designer who now works out of his studio in Longmont, Colorado. “Simplicity in life is difficult and complicated to achieve,” added Muggleton. “It is easy to have too much going on and spend too much time organizing it.”

COMPLEX PROCESS YIELDS GRACEFUL ELEGANCE
Muggleton creates high quality modern furniture by bending and shaping exotic woods and blending other materials such as metal and glass to achieve the desired outcome. “The method of making curved furniture is a complex process, which has been practiced for centuries,” says Muggleton, who went on to explain: “Many thin layers of wood are joined together, placed on a mould and inserted into a vacuum press. The vacuum press shrinks itself around the mould, contorting the wood over the new shape. The press delivers a cumulative pressure of almost 4 tons over the new design.” Once the body of the work had been created in this way, says Muggleton, the same process is used to apply beautiful veneer onto the surface.

[Lotus Bench – Bent Bird’s Eye maple ends enclose the natural flowing arched base, inlaid with wenge. The seat is upholstered in Ultra-suede. Materials: Bird’s Eye Maple and Wenge wood and upholstered in Ultra-suede – Available in other woods and sizes. Dimensions as shown: 23in (W) x 71in (L) x 31in (H) – Three Person Bench, 20in (W) x 60in (L) x 31in (H) – Two Person Bench (Click on image for larger view)]

Elements of engineering, structure and architecture are all incorporated into Muggleton’s work, and each serve to inspire him daily. “Buildings, bridges and archways new and old all provide a fundamental foundation for my designs,” he says. Explaining his affinity for creating curved furniture, Muggleton says, “Everything in nature is curved, from the smooth pebbles on a beach to an egg. Sharp jagged edges do not make you feel at ease; but a field of straw bending in the wind, now that is inviting. This is the reason my work involves such beautiful and subtle curves.”

[Macassar Chaise Lounge – Beautifully stitched and upholstered leather supports are secured to stainless steel curved rails. The headrest is also upholstered in leather. The base is curved and tapered in Macassar Ebony, which is considered one of the most lustrous and beautiful of the ebony wood family and is notoriously difficult to bend. The seat can be positioned at an infinite number of angles for whether you are reading or simply relaxing. Materials: Macassar Ebony wood and Stainless Steel and Leather. Dimensions as shown: 20in (W) x 59in (L) x 29in (H) – Available in other woods and sizes (Click on image for larger view)]

Andrew Muggleton was born in Aldershot, England. He graduated from Nottingham Trent University with a degree in manufacturing engineering and worked throughout the world as a design engineer before moving to the United States in 1999 to develop his passion for furniture design. His work has been featured in a number of well respected magazines, including The Robb Report, Architecture & Design of the West, Northern Home, Phoenix Home & Garden Magazine and Wood Art Today. Miami Beach Welcomes Ambassadors from Italy’s Federation of
Damanhur
The World’s Largest Intentional Eco-Community
Miami Beach, FL – On November 13, 2008 from 7pm to 10pm, Miami’s top
artists, educators, environmentalists, community leaders and media will gather to
welcome special representatives of The Federation of Damanhur. The world’s
largest intentional eco-community, Damanhur featured in February 2008
on ABC’s Good Morning America has chosen Miami Beach as the community’s main North American hub for their
educational programs and events.
The first event, Damanhur Reception and Music of the Plants, will be held at
the Miami Beach Botanical Garden on the full moon of Thursday, November
13th. The program will include a magical concert of the plants utilizing one of
Damanhur’s revolutionary technologies that converts the energy of the plants and
translates it into music, a short video of Damanhur and open conversation with
the Damanhurian Ambassadors, Crotalo Sesamo and Shama Viola.
“We are thrilled to be opening up a center in Miami,” said Crotalo Sesamo. “As
part of our first program we’ll be creating a spiral stone labyrinth which will
become a permanent interactive art installation at the Miami Beach Botanical
Garden, our gift to the community.”
Damanhur has city centers all over the world in countries
such as Italy, France, Austria, Japan, Germany and Croatia.
Founded in 1975 and located in northwestern Italy, the federation of Damanhur
(“the city of light”) has been described as one of the largest and most successful
advanced technological intentional eco-villages in the world. Damanhur is a
Federation of Communities with a continuously evolving social and political
structure. They are also renowned for building the largest underground temple in
the world. The Temples of Humankind at Damanhur are an extraordinary work of
art that has been described as an “Eight Wonder of the World”. A United Nations
award- winning sustainable community, Damanhur is an eco-society based upon
ethical and spiritual values, esoteric traditions and modern research.
The world which they speak about is surrounded and motivated by the beauty of
art, guided daily by spiritual purpose, and a commitment to manifesting the
Damanhur dream; the successes of their ideals manifested as a living reality
ignite hope for the future of humanity and for the realization of a diverse and
unified peaceable planet.
