Maiart Series Hosts Italian Art Design 2/23/11

Continuing the Successful MaiArt Series, Maitardi Features Alex Turco Art Designer in February

MaiArt, a cocktail gathering every last Wednesday of the month celebrating local and international artists, gets back to its Italian roots on Wednesday February 23rd, 2011 at 6pm with Alex Turco Art Designer Gallery and its made-in-Italy innovative mix of art, fashion and design. Guests enjoy complimentary Prosecco and tapas until 7pm and music by Soul P until 9pm.

Alex Turco Art Designer and Maitardi form a natural match for February’s MaiArt Series event. The pieces will be displayed throughout the oak-shaded patio on Wednesday February 23rd and will remain at Maitardi for the next four weeks inside the restaurant. Alex Turco’s works include photography, multi-media graphics and manually manipulated materials that aim at the mission of “transporting and merging art into lifestyle”. The concept creates a new take on artful living with inventive art objects that enhance personal spaces and give new life and style to settings.

March’s MaiArt event will bring Michele Palmisano’s work. Michele is part of the Graspa Group family and his pieces focus on light and movement of elements like water as well as manipulations of plexiglass photography. MaiArt is scheduled for Wednesday March 30th at 6pm.

Located in the oak-shaded plaza corner of NE 2nd avenue and 39th Street (163 NE 39th Street), also known as the heart of the Miami Design District, the risto-bar, a European concept combining ristorante and bar, opened Fall 2009. Maitardi’s experience rests on a casual, outdoors and sociable ambiance, delicious tapas meant for sharing and friendly and professional service. The location has retained its architectural design with the floor to ceiling leaf-mosaic façade along with the native oak trees throughout the patio giving it an irresistible appeal to relax, catch up on work or a book, hang out with friends for happy hour or lunch with a client. Complimentary Wi-Fi and outside bar available. www.maitardimiami.com

MiaSci Young Patrons, Art Enthusiasts, Community-at-large
The MiaSci Young Patrons invite you to a happy hour celebrating the launch of Xavier Cortada’s solo exhibit, “90N/90S: North Pole & South Pole Installations,” as they kick off their 2011 season.

Cortada created art at the Earth’s poles to help address environmental issues at every point in between. Sponsored by the National Science Foundation and the New York Foundation for the Art’s sponsored artists program, Cortada placed 24 shoes in a circle around the South and North Poles (in 2007 and 2008, respectively), each shoe serving as a proxy for a person affected by global climate change across 24 time zones. Aside from the shoes, the exhibit features flags that were part of the original installations at opposite ends of the planet, as well as works on paper made by melting Antarctic ice. This is the first time that works from both polar installations are featured as part of one exhibit.

Guests will enjoy drinks, hors d’oeuvres and the opportunity to meet Xavier Cortada.

Dear Bar 721, I Love You.

Bar 721
721 Lincoln Lane North
Miami Beach, FL
www.bar721.com

By Talmage Thornhill
Please bear with me while I get very excited. Bar 721 makes me unreasonably ecstatic. It is the best bar in Miami Beach, hands down. My enamorment with this establishment is fueled by several crucial factors I shall outline here.

Smoke free? Check!
Amazing happy hour? Check!
Friendly staff and clientele? Check!
Appealing, full liquor cocktail menu with exotic drinks? Check!
Comfortable couches? Clean venue? Nice Decor? Check, Check, Check!
WELCOMES MY DOG!?!?!?!? CHECK!!!!!

So while I calm myself down I’ll also point out that while this is a gay friendly establishment, there has been a mixed crowd every time I’ve visited. It’s large enough to feel spacious but small enough to be manageable and cozy. Music differs from night to night but at times they bring in DJs in the later evening hours. TVs are there and usually on if you would like to watch sports, but no food is served. Friendly staff usually allows you to bring in to-go stuff from local eateries, though.

721 is in the space that used to be the “Laundry Bar.” Please do not let this scare you. There is not a hint of this venue’s former self present any more. Everything has been gutted and it doesn’t resemble the old dive at all. Cheers!

This is a shot of some friends and me celebrating Halloween 2010 at Bar 721, our favorite neighborhood hangout.

What’s What with The Webster

The Webster
1220 Collins Avenue, Miami Beach, FL
thewebstermiami.com

By Talmage Thornhill
The Webster is undeniably cool. It has a pricey boutique with several different merchandise brands on the first and second floors. There’s a restaurant whose menu looks delectable, but so far I have only been tempted enough to try the rooftop bar and lounge.

Quite the chic sobe experience, everything about this place is hip: beautiful people, comfortable seating, exciting open view of Collins Ave from above, and eclectic, interesting music. In fact, the Thursday night DJ is one of the most creative cats spinning records I’ve heard in Miami in quite some time.

They have an excellent late night happy hour, during which cocktails are a mere $5. Paula, our cocktail server for the night, was as gorgeous as the bottle girls at Mynt and Mokäi but thankfully omits the snooty, I-deserve-all-of-your-money-and-you-are-lucky-to-be-here-attitude that too frequently accompanies so many of her contemporaries. The drinks are strong and there’s not a plastic cup in sight.

The bathrooms are downstairs, a bit far from the rooftop, but that’s the only thing that doesn’t basically totally rock about this joint.

I can’t wait to go back!

KRIS STARRY
www.starrynightphotography.net
Starry Night Photography was created in late 2009. Her forte is capturing impromptu moments of time, moments of love, and moments of joy. She prefers to maintain her distance to capture natural shots, but will be happy to gently guide you when another angle or better light would be more dramatic or flattering. Her second goal is for you to have fun, because she feels pictures don’t turn out well if you’re not having a good time. Her love of natural lighting leads her to use outdoor and other on-location settings, and she chooses her shooting locations to best match your personality. Let Kris Starry of Starry Night Photography capture and preserve your emotions and memories on your special occasion for not only your lifetime, but for those of generations to come.

Blue Martini Kendall Celebrated its Grand Opening By Betty Alvarez

Premiere Martini Lounge Brings Convenience, Entertainment and an Economic Boost to the ‘burbs’. Blue Martini is proud to bring Kendall residents its collection of delicious martinis, tasty dishes and exciting live entertainment. Located at the newly renovated The Palms at Town & Country Shopping Center, Blue Martini is destined to become the Mecca of entertainment and nightlife for suburban Miami.

The premiere martini lounge, Blue Martini has locations in Boca Raton, Fort Lauderdale, Las Vegas, Miami, Naples, Orlando, Phoenix, Tampa and West Palm Beach. For their newest venture, Blue Martini chose the suburban area of Kendall for its location, demographic that fit with their primary customer base, and a genuine need in the community for an entertainment venue of a higher-caliber. “For years this tight-knit, largely Latin American community has enjoyed a utopian-like life, but for any sort of diversion or nightlife, residents have needed to travel to Brickell, South Beach or the Grove” explained CEO Mark E. Vasu. “Now not only will Blue Martini Kendall give residents convenient entertainment but our presence will bring an economic boost to the community in the form of added jobs and revenue” continued Vasu. Blue Martini expects to bring nearly eighty jobs to the Kendall area and with such a successful history it’s likely the Kendall location will be the jump off point for a renaissance in downtown Kendall.

Blue Martini hosted a Grand Opening Party for the public on July 30th, 2010. It gave guests the chance to take in the 8500 square foot entertainment haven and all its amenities. Blue Martini prides itself on offering patrons an ‘upscale environment with a local bar mentality’. Designed for comfort, the lounge’s soft lighting creates a friendly environment while smooth lines provide a sexy backdrop. The forty martini menu is all encompassing focusing on quality, with bartenders using only the best ingredients and keeping with the latest cocktail trends to create palate pleasers, like the signature Blue Martini. A simple menu offers great food for a great value easily paired with one of their delightful drinks, favorites include the Seared Tuna and Beef Tenderloin.

One of only two new retail developments under construction in all of Miami-Dade County, The Palms at Town & Country recently celebrated the completion of its first phase with the opening of two nationally recognized retailers. The Palms is quickly paving its way as the new downtown Kendall. “With the successful opening of Nordstrom Rack and Loehmann’s, we are looking forward to the next influx of specialty retailers including Blue Martini,” says Michael Longmore, Executive Vice President with Jones Lang LaSalle. “The Palms at Town & Country’s unique combination of ideal proximity to neighboring residents, ease of access from the region and the strong national anchor tenants provides the perfect location for Blue Martini,” says Michael Longmore, Executive Vice President with Jones Lang LaSalle.

Located at 8405 Mills Drive #205, Blue Martini Kendall is open 7 days a week, from 4pm until 4am. Blue Martini Kendall launched a schedule of events that includes an “In the Biz” night for hospitality industry people, a Ladies night and a 7 day a week happy hour. The organization continues to recruit people in the Gulf area with developed wildlife observation skills and with a respectable knowledge of local lands and waters. THE STATE OF
www.thestateofmusic.com
The State Of is the product of the marriage between Steph Taylor’s edgy piano/synth playing and Nabedi Osorio’s electronic-like live drumming. Their dark pop sensibility is born out of their hometown of Miami, FL and is reminiscent of artists ranging from the Bjork and the Eurythmics to Radiohead and the Cure. Taylor’s style of playing is often percussive and dark where Osorio’s drumming is melodic and when coupled, they create a dynamic sound larger than what’s expected out of two people.

“The State Of exemplifies that oxymoronic moment when something sparse becomes atmospheric – like the most electronic form of analog, or vice versa” -Broward New Times
“South Florida duo the State Of likes to keep pop tunes dark but upbeat. The ladies crank eerily pretty arrangements on the keys and back them with big, electroniclike live drums for a Tori Amos meets LCD Soundsystem effect.” -Tampa Bay Times
“The massive appeal of the State Of comes simply from variety” -Miami New Times

GUSTAVO RAMIREZ
www.facebook.com/pages/Gustavo-Ramirez/114359381795
I’m a 35 year old, mostly self taught visual artist (painter). I grew up in Orlando, Fl. and moved to Miami in 2001. My work mostly expresses and explores my unconscious mind in mostly automatic abstract techniques. I also like to make imagined and real portraits of people.

YAMEL MOLERIO
www.yamelmolerio.com
I was born in Havana, Cuba in 1971. I came to the U.S. in 1980 at the age of 9 during the Mariel boatlift. Since I could remember I’ve always been into art. As a kid, I remember being into drawing cartoons and even drawing anatomical posters for my mom who was a biology teacher. In high school, I started doing graffiti with my friends and it became a way of life during the late eighties. After I got into college I learned about contemporary artists, working with other media and art history. I also learned about adding concept and meaning to a work of art.
In my artwork, I deal with issues important to me by being comical at times instead of in your face political. I reject art styles or working in a specific style. I use imagery that ranges from cartoons to realistic portraiture. I want the message of the piece to be the most important thing. I want the viewer at first to be drawn to the piece and then to question why he/she was attracted to it. Maybe with a dialogue between the viewer and the artwork, the viewer will realize that popular culture has programmed us to think a certain way.

River Lounge launches a brand new happy hour 6/11/10

ONE YEAR LATER AND RIVER LOUNGE IS STILL MIXING IT UP
Launching a brand new happy hour and lots of other surprises

Recognized as one of the chicest places to have a cocktail, River Lounge has established a name in South Florida as one of the premiere lounges in the city. When the venue opened its doors, all were excited to view its lovely décor, classy ambiance and gorgeous view of the Miami River. With its 30ft ceilings, LED lighting, circular bar, flat screen TVs, custom lighting fixtures, outdoor and indoor seating and custom lounge furniture the venue became a favorite for Miami’s affluent professionals. A year later and River Lounge is mixing’ it up for patrons.

Launching on Friday, June 11, 2010 “Happy Hour on The River” will commence from 5:00PM-10:00PM offering live music and 2 for 1 drinks. For the martini lover, $4 martinis will be available from 5:00PM-7:00PM. So whether shaken, stirred or fruit flavored, there will be a delicious choice for every taste.

River Lounge was a concept created by Sunset Entertainment Group’s dynamic duo Chris Breed and Michael Gruber. These gentlemen have a track record that truly reinforces why River Lounge rapidly became a Miami hotspot. With such successful and legendary venues as The Tropicana, Teddy’s at the Roosevelt Hotel, Cabana Club, Sterling Steakhouse, Green Door, and the White Lotus, South Florida rapidly embraced their different approach to nightlife.

With a one year anniversary now approaching, the venue will unveil a series of spectacular changes. “Change is what the area is all about. We came into Downtown before a few others jumped on board. We took the risk, as we knew that Miamians wanted more; more class, more beauty and we wanted to provide them with a lovely venue that exemplified relaxed elegance,” said Michael Gruber.

New features will include live music, weekly art events, on-going fashions shows, guest DJs and a re-vamped Happy Hour. With this “re-vamp” those who wish to sip a cocktail after work can expect that and then some as the River Lounge team will provide them with all the reason to come out after a rough day at the office.

Located in Downtown Miami and away from South Beach, this gorgeous space will continue to cater to the active professional, corporate and social scene as it has for the last several months. But will continue to please the most discerning of Miami patrons by updating the already unique cocktail list and adding even more choices to the signature martini list.

With all the new tweaks and oh so fab new events set in place, River Lounge will gear up to celebrate an electrifying one year anniversary this August. For those who got on the list for their huge grand opening, expect a soiree just as big if not bigger. “To please the South Florida patron, you have to mix up a lot more than your martinis. “You have to [always] keep it fresh. Here we offer them casual elegance,” said Shawn Finkel, general manager of River Lounge.

River Lounge is located inside the Epic Hotel & Residences located at 270 Biscayne Boulevard Way, Miami, FL 33131.

Annette Recommends Happy Hour at Transit Lounge UPDATE: CLOSED

UPDATE: THIS BUSINESS IS CLOSED

Transit Lounge
729 Southwest 1st Avenue
Miami, FL 33130

We wanted to find someplace with for happy hour but it was a little after 7pm and most happy hours end at 7pm.  So, after calling several places found out that Transit Lounge happy hour goes until 8pm, so we headed there.

All drinks and food are 1/2 price (except for a couple of alcohols, like Johnny Walker Green and a couple more) and they were doing a Rock Band Competition karaoke.

We ordered our first round,  Apple Martini, a Dirty Martini, I had Tequila and OJ (my favorite) and an order of cheese fries.  The cheese fries where so good, the cheese was a little spicy and so tasty.  Their drink prices were already good, but with the 1/2 off, the prices are a steal. Just to give you an idea, the apple martini was only $3.75.

The Rock Band competition was so much fun, I had never played rock band before and I had a blast, I played the drums.  I will definitely be going back for more happy hours at Transit Lounge….need to get a big group together, to go drink, eat and play Rock Band, it would be GREAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The event will take place at River Lounge located at 270 Biscayne Boulevard Way, Miami, FL 33131, inside the Epic Hotel.

Spearheaded by Donald Koenig, a Veteran of the US Navy and Carmen Morales-Koenig, (his wife & his care giver) the duo has used their private funds to service and assist other patients with ALS and their families with medical equipment and support. During the last two years they have traveled in their “DonKMobile” to several cities and states through the East Coast sharing a word of faith and describing the benefits of life after a ventilator. The couple has traveled the map trying to educate and mentor. Morales, a registered nurse by profession, is active in various national organizations for the disease to include ALS TDI Foundation and National ALS association.

Koenig and Morales have been invited to symposiums, gatherings and social functions to speak and share their testimony. They have attended and also spoken at several PALS (Patients with ALS) associations in different cities across US, the last being in Melbourne, Florida April 2009. At said event, they spoke to six other patients and their families. All showing great interest in attending the “Angels Hands for ALS Boot Camps,” to further learn how to care of their family members and provide them a better quality of life.

Within a short time this amazing, passionate twosome has created such a positive impact in the ALS Community that on April 20th 2009, they decided to commence a national launch. They chose Miami as the launch pad, deeming it such a dynamic and incredible market. Once the choice was made, they carefully enlisted Esperanza Franky, a local active professional in the South Florida to be the Legal Representative of the national 501©3 nonprofit, “Angel Hands for ALS, Foundation Inc.” With a main focus to help many more PALS and their families, the foundation will aid many with the help of Governments Grants and Private Fundraising.

Franky, has close to a decade of experience in the finance/banking industry and has made several TV appearances working with other non profits such as Organización C.A.S.A., leading their “Projecto Vivienda.” Now, as CEO of Angel Hands, she will collaborate with many of her longtime contacts to help the cause. When asked about her mission with the organization she simply states: “I have very high goals and high-hopes for [this] Foundation. In unison we will endeavor to help as many low-income patients who suffer from ALS; by teaching and training their care givers an efficient way to take care of them & for patients of ALS to feel an active part of their families and of society.”

Hosted by WSVN Deco Drive reporter and “On the Flip Side” host Aubrey Aquino, Univision’s Karol Rosa, the launch event for Angel Hands for ALS with feature a cocktail reception, giveaways, and promotional partners to include: Om Garden, Chivas Regal, Next Miami Magazine, Miami Empresarial Magazine, InterContinental Miami, IT Design, Cakes in the City, Prairie Vodka (courtesy of AMC Liaisons), Camelot Salon & Spa, Ramsey & Jade Couture, Live Colors Media, The Homestead Miami Speedway, and 880TheBiz. At the reception, guests will have the opportunity to support the cause by making donations (via check or credit cards).

Present at the event will be Ashok Verma, M.D., D.M. Professor, Medical Director, Kessenich Family MDA-ALS Center and MDA Clinics, Attending Neurologist and Neuro-HIV Clinic Director, Jackson Memorial Hospital.

ANGEL HANDS FOR ALS MISSION STATEMENT:
Angel Hands for ALS strives to promote awareness and provide education on how to improve the quality of life for patients suffering Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis.

ABOUT ALS
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), often referred to as “Lou Gehrig’s Disease,” is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. Motor neurons reach from the brain to the spinal cord and from the spinal cord to the muscles throughout the body. The progressive degeneration of the motor neurons in ALS eventually leads to their death. When the motor neurons die, the ability of the brain to initiate and control muscle movement is lost. With voluntary muscle action progressively affected, patients in the later stages of the disease may become totally paralyzed.

A-amyotrophic-tropic comes from the Greek language. “A” means no or negative. “Myo” refers to muscle, and “Trophic” means nourishment–”No muscle nourishment.” When a muscle has no nourishment, it “atrophies” or wastes away. “Lateral” identifies the areas in a person’s spinal cord where portions of the nerve cells that signal and control the muscles are located. As this area degenerates, it leads to scarring or hardening (“sclerosis”) in the region.

As motor neurons degenerate, they can no longer send impulses to the muscle fibbers that normally result in muscle movement. Early symptoms of ALS often include increasing muscle weakness, especially involving the arms and legs, speech, swallowing or breathing. When muscles no longer receive the messages from the motor neurons that they require to function, the muscles begin to atrophy (become smaller). Limbs begin to look “thinner” as muscle tissue atrophies.

Venessa Monokian Art on 50 Art Viceroy Series 6/16/09

Venessa Monokian Conceptual Artist
Tuesday June 16 6-10 pm

Venessa Monokian is a Miami-based artist. She’s currently an Artist-in-Residence at ArtCenter/South Florida on Lincoln Road in Miami Beach.

Monokian’s particular interest is the examination of creative thought and the learning process. We are indelibly marked by our experiences in Elementary School, and this fascinates and inspires Venessa Monokian’s work. The point of departure is her personal experience with academia, which has been less than fulfilling. As the investigation into this subject matter progresses Monokian has found that it’s evolved from a personal critique of her own learning methods to an active inquiry into the educational experience in America at the dawn of the 21st Century.

The ArtCenter has one of the most rigorous non-profit exhibition schedules in South Florida and they continue to develop numerous art-focused programs that support the community as well as emerging artists.

Proceeds from the night will be donated by Viceroy to the ArtCenter/South Florida. Come show your support and savor the views!
