Miami, FL – Hot Yoga House Miami will host a weekend of free yoga classes Jan 2-3 at its Coconut Grove and Doral locations to celebrate the studio name changing (from Bikram Hot Yoga Miami) and the expansion of its class offerings. In addition to the classic 90-minute, 26-posture Bikram yoga class, Hot Yoga House will offer a 1-hour version of that class as well as Power Flow, Power Hour, Yin and meditation classes. Full schedule of class times available at www.miamibikram.com/schedules.

“Our students have expressed a need to be able to fit the wonderful physical and mental benefits of yoga into their daily schedules,” said Will Thomas, Hot Yoga House studio director. “We are responding with 1-hour class options and a variety of temperatures and styles to help open the body and mind in additional ways. And since we no longer offer only Bikram yoga we thought it appropriate to update our name to reflect the welcoming community we and our students have built at the studios.”

17th Annual Safewalk-Run 5k To Be Held Saturday, February 27, 2016 At NSU In Davie

Women In Distress of Broward County, Inc. is hosting its 17th Annual SAFEWALK-RUN 5K on Saturday, February 27, 2016 at Nova Southeastern University (NSU) in Davie. Registration is now open for all walkers and runners, and their four-legged friends. Proceeds benefit Women In Distress of Broward County, Inc., the only nationally accredited, state-certified, full service domestic violence center serving Broward County.

More than 1,000 community members (and their furry friends) will take to the pavement to raise awareness about domestic violence and help Women In Distress reach its goal of raising $150,000, which can provide 1,500 nights of safe shelter for adults and children affected by domestic violence. Registration begins at 7:30 am. The event will kick off with a warm up, followed by timed race for runners and a more leisurely stroll for walkers, strollers and dogs at 9:00am.

Come out and walk or run in honor of those affected by domestic violence. Domestic violence survivors will be cheering on walkers and runners along the route and also walking alongside supporters celebrating the brave steps they’ve taken toward a new violence-free life. February is also Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month and information on domestic violence will be available for all participants.

A registration fee is required in order to participate. Pre-registered adults are $25, students are $20, youth participants, ages 6-12 are $15 and dogs can walk for $10 (must be registered with a participating adult or teen). Kids ages 5 and under are free. SAFEWALK participants will enjoy a complimentary breakfast and T-shirt. Kids can enjoy a variety of fun activities and everyone can visit local vendors within our vendor village. Thank you to our sponsors, including Host Sponsor Nova Southeastern University, JM Family Enterprises, Inc., SE Toyota, Sun Sentinel, Thomas Family Foundation, and Ultimate Software for helping keep families safe.

Register now at http://widbc.convio.net/SafeWalk2016 and your registration fee can make a difference by providing the cost of answering two calls for help on our 24-Hour Crisis Hotline.

YogArt, a DARLEE production, has experienced a year of unprecedented growth in 2015. Miami’s world-renowned Art Basel weekend will mark the fifth anniversary of Cavicchioli 1928 presents YogArt sponsored by jugofresh & The Sacred Space Miami December 4 – 6 at Wynwood Walls. Additionally, YogArt presented by Chȃteau D’Esclans & The Sacred Space Miami will host the second installation of its new 10-month expanded series in the Miami Design District’s Palm Court plaza on November 25.

“YogArt’s unique mix of rejuvenating yoga sessions, live music and healthy food and drink has proven to be a winning formula for South Florida and those traveling to Miami for Art Basel,” noted YogArt co-founder and avid philanthropist Arlene Chaplin. “The lively backdrops provided by Goldman Properties’ Wynwood Walls and the Design District’s Palm Court plaza are perfect settings for inspired cultural and community events like YogArt.”

Each class lasts approximately one hour, and will be led by South Florida certified Jivamukti teacher and licensed movement therapist Dawn B. Feinberg. Live music for the weekend’s sessions will feature DJ Drez, The Mayapuris and Marti Nikko. Widely recognized artist, philanthropist and entrepreneur Peter Tunney will design a special yoga mat to be auctioned off during Friday’s session to benefit Miami’s Design Architecture Senior High (DASH).

Curated by Goldman Properties’ CEO Jessica Goldman Srebnick since 2012, this year’s Wynwood Walls program, Walls of Change, will include 14 new large scale murals and installations by globally acclaimed street artists, as well as a program of events within the art park that will be free and open to the public. Goldman Properties will also debut The Wynwood Walls Garden, a new art space adjacent to the Wynwood Doors, which the company recently purchased to augment its artistic imprint in the neighborhood.

Sessions for YogArt during Art Basel weekend are made possible by valued sponsors 3six5Sport, Buddha Pants, Cavicchioli 1928, evian® natural spring water, ginnybakes, Goldman Properties, jugofresh, MIAMI magazine, Miami New Times, Ocean Drive, The Sacred Space Miami, TY KU Sake, Wynwood Walls, and ZICO Premium Coconut Water.

The Miami Design District’s chic Palm Court plaza will host its second installation of YogArt on Wednesday, November 25, also led by Dawn B. The first session drew a sold-out crowd in October and featured flowing rosé compliments of Whispering Angel, live music from an 11-piece Brass Fellows Ensemble from New World Symphony and a healthy bite compliments of ella, a pop up café by Chef Michael Schwartz. Future musical acts include Miami’s own Afrobeta, the Magic City Hippies and DJ Immortal with accompanying musicians.

Palm Court, the neighborhood’s pedestrian plaza, is home to the Buckminster Fuller Fly’s Eye Dome, Xavier Veilhan’s Le Corbusier sculpture and Sou Fujimoto’s waterfall inspired façade that evokes Miami’s tempestuous rainsqualls. Asanas aside, Palm Court is the ideal point of departure for yogis to explore the Design District’s upscale fashion and design offerings.

Sessions for YogArt’s newly expanded Design District series are made possible by valued sponsors Chariff Realty Group, Chȃteau D’Esclans, evian® natural spring water, Greenmonkey® yoga, Lifeway Foods, lululemon athletica, Ocean Drive, The Sacred Space Miami, and ZICO Premium Coconut Water.

To reserve your mat for any of the upcoming YogArt sessions, visit www.yogartevent.com for pricing and a complete schedule of activities. Interact with YogArt on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter using the hashtag #YogArtEvent!

Each day, 164 people lose their lives – many unnecessarily – due to improper care of pressure wounds also known as bedsores, a little-known area of medicine that is growing at an alarming rate with the rapid aging of our society.
Registered and licensed vocational nurses and those in related fields may earn continuing education credit and certification in the area of wound care by enrolling in weekend courses sponsored by the College of Long Term Care:

• August 26-28, 2015 – Miami, FL (Includes Skills Lab)
• September 9-11, 2015 – Los Angeles, CA (Includes Skills Lab)
• September 23-25, 2015 – Oakland, CA (Includes Skills Lab)
• October 28-30, 2015 – Dallas, TX (Includes Skills Lab)

“The growing problem of pressure wounds is especially challenging for nursing homes that have had to send their residents to specialty clinics and hospitals for treatment,” said Anvar, who also founded the College of Long Term Care. “This is especially costly when you factor in ambulance transportation, lifting and moving patients in delicate health, admittance to the hospital and surgical care. Also, the simple act of transporting patients can lead to the onset of additional pressure wounds. By teaching staff how to prevent such wounds and identify them at the earliest stages, we can reverse these troubling statistics.”
Weekend courses sponsored by the College of Long Term Care will reveal these basic facts about caring for wounds:

• Avoid excess baths (should only bathe for 3-5 minutes 2-3 times per week)
• Keep water temperature lukewarm – not hot
• Add bath oil
• Do not use most soap products as they contain detergent (Dove is the exception)
• Do not use washcloths
• Pat dry
• Apply moisturizer immediately after bathing and reapply 4 times each day
• Stay well hydrated
• Avoid caffeine, spices and alcohol

The month of May has been named the Mental Health Awareness month. As part of this initiative, Dr. Delvena Thomas, Director of DRT Behavioral Services is organizing a one day event called Free Mental Health Fair with other local businesses and organizations, in an effort to put all the pieces of holistic wellbeing together – mental, physical, and spiritual – and provide the community the tools they need to stay healthy and strong. The inspiration behind this initiative was brought about by the fact that Miami-Dade County has the greatest percentage of people with serious mental illness of any metropolitan community in the U.S.³

Attending community members will be able to enjoy the following free services: Boot camp @ 10am, blood pressure screenings, BMI and glucose readings, as well as free access to government mental health agencies and private practices of different specialties. Food trucks and refreshments will also be present for locals to enjoy.

Mental Health Awareness Facts:
• 9% of the population have been diagnosed with a serious mental illness³
• Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the U.S. (more common than homicide)²
• Depression and anxiety are among the most common medical problems worldwide²
• Mental illness affects 1 in 4 adults¹

After years of medical practice, Dr. Hossein Joukar envisioned a change in the way the local community receives healthcare. Tired of the clouded, inefficient and frankly, unfair experiences of those seeking medical attention, he set out to build a clinic with the patient in mind. In 2005 the first RiteCare facility was inaugurated and Dr. Joukar made sure that his establishment embodied the ideals that have governed his own medical career.
Starting an urgent/walk-in care facility seemed the most logical fit. Urgent cares are convenient alternatives to traditional healthcare facilities. As opposed to traditional primary providers, appointments are not necessary to receive attention, and they are available 7 days a week, with longer operating hours. Before urgent care, the only other option for families experiencing minor conditions such as cold and flu, sprains, minor burns and infections, was to rush over to a crowded hospital emergency room. These visits not only lasted long and uncomfortable wait times, sometimes up to 8 hours, but also cost a substantial amount of money, no matter the insurance provider. Urgent care centers like RiteCare have facilitated the treatment of non-life threatening conditions by seeing patients quickly and efficiently.
“It was important to provide a space for patients to feel confident in the care they are receiving, as well as the price they are paying,” said Dr. Joukar. “We are advocates for fair costs and transparency when it comes to billing. Our patients, insured or not, know exactly what will be charged before any procedure is performed.”
From the moment a patient arrives at any of the four RiteCare facilities, they can expect the utmost level of service performed by any of the board-certified physicians currently on call. In addition to urgent care medical services, RiteCare also provides a variety of services including primary care, physical therapy, school or sports related physical examinations, travel and seasonal vaccinations and immigration physicals. Employers can also count on RiteCare to provide drug testing, occupational medicine/therapy and work-related physical examinations.

A presentation at the Church of Perpetual Life in Hollywood, Florida will discuss breakthroughs in organ transplantation medicine.

Experts in the field believe that replacement of failed cells, tissues, or organs could cause over 30% of all deaths in the United States to be substantially postponed—increasing the chance of living to age 90 by more than 10 times.

Unfortunately, the supply of transplantable organs is much less than the demand. There are long waiting lists of potential organ transplant recipients, most of whom die before an organ becomes available. In the United States, it estimated that only about 2% of the potentially needed organ transplants are carried-out. Even when organs are transplanted, they may be poorly matched to the recipient, requiring immune suppression measures that decrease the quality and quantity of life of the recipient.

Come to the meeting to learn about breakthroughs in transplantation of heart, kidney, liver, lung, and other organs that could save many lives of people who die prematurely because of organ disease or failure.

Thursday, February 26, 2015 at 7:15 pm (doors open at 6 pm)

The service will be held at the Church of Perpetual Life

Dentistry from Our Hearts: Spreading Free Smiles Throughout South Florida

February 4, 2015

AVENTURA, FL — The Dental Care Group and Dental Care Group Kids are bringing free smiles back to the community! On Sunday, February 8, 2015, they’ll host the 4th annual Dentistry from Our Hearts. Their dental teams will be donating their time to provide free services including exams, cleanings, fillings, bondings, extractions, x-rays and emergency care at both their Aventura and Pembroke Pines offices during this year’s event.

With the help of their fellow dentists, hygienists, clinical and administrative teams, volunteers and sponsors, Dr. Rick Mars, Dr. Joel Glicksman and Dr. Josh Coussa have treated over 1000 patients and donated nearly half a million dollars in dental care through the Dentistry from Our Hearts program since 2012.

Tooth decay, which is almost entirely preventable, is the most common chronic illness among school-age children. Left untreated, it can result in infection, unbearable pain, loss of teeth and acute systemic infection. Yet nearly one in four American children have untreated tooth decay. For low-income children, the rate doubles.

“For many, a visit to the dentist is unaffordable and inaccessible. More than 85 million Americans have no form of dental insurance. We are looking to address this concern and give back to the members of our community who need it the most,” said Dr. Rick Mars.

The event will take place from 9 am to 4 pm on February 8th. Patients will be seen on a first come first served basis. If you would like more information on this event, or to schedule an interview with Dr. Rick Mars, please contact Leslie de Lepine at (305)935-2797 ext. 249 or via email at Leslie@dentalcaregroup.net.

The story of a South Beach legend

Walk to the Fifth Street lifeguard stand on South Beach at 5:15 pm any day. You will see a bearded, long-haired shirtless man wearing black shorts, one black glove, and a headband that’s black, too. People call him the “Raven,” and he’s been standing in front of that lifeguard stand at that time for the last forty years, getting ready for his eight-mile jog up and down the beach. That’s right—Raven has run eight miles on the sands of South Beach every day since 1975, through concussions, hurricanes, food poisoning, animal attacks, hail and high water. And he’s still going.

This event will feature:

A reading of poetry written by the Raven himself
Screening of the feature documentary
Invitation to join the Raven on his famous 8 mile run on the beach following the film at 4:15 PM

It’s That Time of Year Again!

MSP’s 2nd Annual “Gobble Giveaway”, focused on students and families in our community, is not only a way of providing Thanksgiving meals to families, but also a way to show kindness and support to those who are feeling the pain of poverty and misfortune. Last year, 13 families received a Publix Thanksgiving Dinner, with a meal cost of $39.99, and our numbers have increased. We expect to feed 45+ families this year. MSP relies on generous donations, from compassionate people like yourself, in order to provide this significant service to the less fortunate residents of our community.

About Scalp Micro-Pigmentation (SMP):
SMP was developed as both a cosmetic procedure for men suffering with all types of hair loss, and as a medical procedure to help conceal scars, burns and birthmarks, as well as the full spectrum of alopecia strains. During a SMP procedure, a blend of specialist pigments is deposited into the dermal layer of the skin on the scalp. Using a highly sophisticated combination of angles, penetration depths, deposit sizes and pigment shades, these deposits create an extremely realistic illusion of real shaven hair on the scalp.

About HIS Hair:
HIS Hair Clinic is an internationally recognized, specialist hair loss treatment clinic, with prominent locations in major urban centers around the world. Each clinic complies with (and exceeds) all core professional standards of effective treatments, cleanliness and health and safety. They are always opening new clinics further afield, to enable even greater access to our unique SMP treatment for hair loss.

Different games and challenges are employed to teach children these skills in a way that is fun & engaging. Parents will have the opportunity to get a fitness assessment by PowerFit Studio’s trainer John and Vivian Rice and hear a talk by PowerFit Studios’ celebrated fitness guru, Shirlee Fernandez. Difference Makers will provide complimentary glucose and blood pressure checks. Refreshments will be sponsored by Rozalyn H. Paschal Pediatrics. PowerFit Studios is located inside the Opera Tower at 1750 North Bayshore Drive, Miami, Fl 33132. The cost of the event is $10.00. Parking is $2.50 with validation. Powerfit Studios will also provided registered attendees with a gift card offering 2 Zumba classes, 2 Latin Ballroom dance classes, 20% off spa and slimming treatments and two Power Plate sessions. “The growing rate of childhood obesity in our country is alarming,” said Shirlee Fernandez, Founder and Owner, PowerFit Studios, Miami. “Childhood obesity is entirely preventable. We are here to provide ways that encourage healthy eating and fitness habits.”

Jonerik Murphy — the founder of JEMKIDS — talked about the event saying, “Being a physically fit child isn’t about being a great athlete, it is about being a healthy person. If a child has poor posture, it will affect everything from self esteem to performance in school to long term health issues.  Therefore, children should be physically active early on to create strong, healthy bodies.” Jonerik has been certified by the International Youth Conditioning Association (IYCA) as a Youth Fitness Specialist (Level 2). He has a passion to help kids be healthy and move the best they can, whether it is for life’s everyday activities or for sports. JEMKIDS motto is: Infusing Fitness with Fun!

About PowerFit Studios
Built on the scientific foundation of whole-body vibration, the Power Plate at Power Fit Studios can grant bodies such benefits as improved muscle tone, increased circulation, and higher bone density. When combined with a

reasonable amount of rocket fuel, session spent atop the platform can accelerate users fitness goals. The private
studio also supports clients’ inner and outer well-being with more traditional approaches, including Zumba, and Latin Ballroom dance,as well as a range of soothing spa services. Power Fit Studios also offers specialty classes in aromatherapy, chakra-meditation and vision board workshops.

About JEMKIDS
JEMKIDS was created by Jonerik Murphy to help develop a culture of physically fit children at a time when the statistics show that the obesity rate is increasing throughout the youth population. While many schools are reducing or eliminating physical education programs to dedicate more time to classroom work, something is being left out: Physical literacy. Simply put, today’s youth spend too much time sitting and not moving. No one can argue that improving performance in school isn’t important. However, it should not come at the expense of physical development.
In this advanced technological age, more children are spending time playing video games than playing outside. JEMKIDS’ programs were created to address this lack of physical activity. As children mature, there is a window of opportunity to develop motor skills and movement skills most efficiently. If children are inactive during the body’s maturation process, than these skills will either be limited or not developed at all. Consequently, there are short term (children being overweight) and long term effects (increased medical expenses and complications as adults). www.jemkids.com

o38_73_37-m

Heroes Unite is a program created to provide opportunities that can nurture and empower communities through mentoring, volunteering and family engagement. Heroes Unite strengthens communities by teaching them about art, culture and education. They strive to serve people in need and give them a safer and healthier life.

Heroes Unite was created in 1994. They began by supporting families from the Ronald McDonald house. Heroes Unite provided support to families that were going through a tough time caring for their terminally ill children. Heroes Unite provided therapy to siblings and parents of patients as well as engaged them in theatre productions. They also provided these services for people going through AIDS treatment. They offered a fun and creative outlet for people going through a hard time.  In 1999, Heroes Unite restructured their program and offered an after school session that would help transform the lives of children by teaching them about Chinese martial arts.

Heroes Unite now has over 500 students in their program. From modest beginnings Heroes Unite has come a long way in changing the lives of youth and families in Miami. Through art, culture, and education, Heroes Unite has had an enormous positive impact on its participants and in the community.

Planet Kitchen Food and Wellness Tour

Planet Kitchen celebrated its maiden voyage of its Planet Kitchen Healthy Organic Food, Drink and Wellness Tour, highlighting a growing trend towards healthy and sustainable living in South Florida. It also showcased local farms, markets, restaurants and businesses who make real food and drinks to heal us naturally from the inside out.

Planet-Kitchen-138

We started our tour at Trio Studio, located in between Wynwood & the Design District (Midtown) in Miami. There we had a wonderful grounding meditation to start our journey followed by  an awesome demonstration of Budokon Yoga, AcroYoga, and Aerial Yoga.   Tour participants had an opportunity to get in on the action and try out AcroYoga for themselves.  It was really beautiful to participate and watch.

Planet-Kitchen-96

Afterwards, the folks at Sambazon shared a refreshing fruit, mint and frozen acai concoction called an “acai bowl.”  This superfood charged treat is also non-GMO, Fair Trade and b-certified. We enjoyed it so much, we purchased a bottle that same week.  I’m sure it will be a permanent part of our refrigerator as we support conscious companies and healthy nutrition.  Continue reading “Planet Kitchen Food and Wellness Tour”

The Most Prestigious Title In Amateur Bodybuilding teams up with Impulse Group Fort Lauderdale in collaboration with AIDS Heatlhcare Foundation to promote overall health and fitness in the LGBT community in a fashion that only Impulse can create…PUMPED: the Official After Party for the Gay Mr. America bodybuilding competition.

In a city where everybody takes pride in his or her body, what is the recipe to create the ultimate showcase? Sprinkle a little glitz and glam on top of sculpted, massive bodies and you get “PUMPED!” It will be raining men…and women of all walks of life as we get PUMPED for an unprecedented celebration! For the first time ever, The Most Prestigious Title In Amateur Body Building, Mr. America, will be hosting PUMPED to honor and celebrate the winners of the competition being held earlier that day at the Colony Theater on Lincoln Road.

The Official After Party for Mr. Gay America and Women’s Extravaganza Championships to benefit Impulse Group Fort Lauderdale!
This celebration will open up the doors to athletics in the LGBT Community as we acknowledge the dedication, sweat and perseverance of these Bodybuilding and Fitness competitors.  Broadening the audience of Bodybuilding/Fitness shows in the US will make it possible for members of the LGBT community to be honored in their Fitness, Bodybuilding and competitive dreams.

“Bodybuilding and fitness would not exist today if were not for the support of the gay community throughout the years.  In fact, the most coveted trophy is the Sandow, presented to the winner of the Mr. Olympia contest (the best of the best show.) Very few know that Eugen Sandow, a pioneering bodybuilder, was gay.
Now we will give the LGBT community the chance to stand out in the competitive world of fitness and bodybuilding with the first annual Gay Mr. America and Women’s Extravaganza Championships,” stated Bob Bonhan, Owner of Mr. America.

Who else but Impulse Group Fort Lauderdale to produce such a monumental after party for the bodybuilding competition? Impulse is known for producing phenomenal “pink carpet” events that blend glamour and swag with life-saving messaging about healthy living in a world with HIV. At PUMPED, a whirlwind of bodies in motion will encourage guests to get physical in every sense of the word! With a very sexy, sweaty, gym theme, dancers and performers will glisten with body paint in their designated work out zones, and the sounds of activist DJ Christian Salmonson will fill the arousing gym atmosphere. Fitness entrepreneur, Mikey Verdugo, will MC the event and drive home the message of a healthy lifestyle. If that is not enough fitness fun for guests to absorb, we will supply them with Impulse’s signature gym gear for future fitness endeavors.

The Marlins Foundation is pleased to announce the second cycle of Compression for Life, a program that teaches heart health and provides CPR and first aid training to the youth at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami Dade.

In 2012, the Marlins Foundation and Catcher Jeff Urgelles launched a CPR class for the kids at the Boys and Girls Club of Miami Dade. This program was inspired by news of Urgelles’ vital role in saving the life of a young woman who had collapsed with cardiac arrest during a Marlins away game in Arizona.

“The Compression for Life Program helps our kids understand and learn the importance of CPR.” shares Alex Rodriguez-Roig, President of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami Dade. “We’re thankful to Jeff and the Marlins for helping make our community a safer and healthier place.”

During the first year of the program, Compression for Life taught the importance of heart health to over 100 youth at the Boys & Girls Club Hank Kline Campus, and provided CPR certification for twenty Boys & Girls Clubs employees. This year, the program will continue with additional support from the local American Heart Association and 911 Education Consultants to offer Compression for Life at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami Dade Kendall Campus.

The Law of Attraction teaches that you attract into your life people and experiences based on your thoughts. This workshop, led by Relationships 101 author Cary Bayer, shows you how to prepare the way for your soul mate to show up by teaching you first how to fall in love with yourself, the basis for drawing that mate to you.
It then shows you how to let the universe know of your readiness for finding your mate—which is an inner process–then how to best let the world know—which is an outer process that involves the people in your life and the dating services on the Internet.
The workshop also trains you how to become magnetic to others, while teaching you the six steps for securing more good dates with people you’re both attracted to and resonate with, to see if such people might be that soul mate. Finally, it puts you on a clear path to looking for love in all the right places—and, magically, finding it.

“Spirit and Money: Prospering by Doing what You Love”
This class helps the millions of spiritual seekers to heal the erroneous separation that so often exists in their minds between Spirit and money. Most importantly, Spirit & Money author Cary Bayer teaches how to use your God-given talents to attract revenue streams by doing the work that you love–your dharma (the work that you’re here to do). This can, in time, turn a tolerable livelihood into a passionate lovelihood. It also shows you how to make a larger cut of the millionaire pie available to you in our abundant universe; and gain 200 percent of Life’s spiritual and material riches. It also teaches you a prayer that you can use on a daily basis to help create unexpected income.
Finally, it helps empower those who are already doing what they love to market their services more effectively by learning the art of spiritual marketing, and come to see that selling itself, when it’s done from the heart, can be graceful and as innocent as child’s play.

YogArt, South Florida’s unique addition to the world-renowned Art Basel weekend, returns to Wynwood Walls with new presenting sponsor jugofresh and new musical talent MC Yogi!

This pairing of Jivamukti yoga practice with the inspiring art at Wynwood Walls and live music offers everyone the opportunity to “Take a Breather During Basel”, and participate in an enhanced yoga experience during one of Miami’s busiest weekends of the year.

“One of the reasons we chose Wynwood Walls as our next location was specifically for wonderful events such as the YogArt festivities,” said Matthew Sherman, juice sommelier and founder of jugofresh. “At jugofresh, we are dedicated to healthy lifestyles and bold choices, so having this blend of art, music and health take place in our backyard proves that jugofresh is firmly planted in the most exciting destination in Miami.”

YogArt sessions are available during both the morning and early evening hours during Art Basel, and each class lasts approximately one hour. Each session will feature special introductory remarks from prominent members of the South Florida community, including Goldman Properties Chief Executive Officer Jessica Goldman, renowned collector Jason Rubell and Pérez Art Museum Miami Director Thomas Collins. Based out of Northern California, new talent MC Yogi’s vast and loyal fans are drawn to his upbeat tunes, with world beat, hip-hop, Bollywood, reggae, and dancehall influences, that he pairs with dazzling collage art made from photos of his own personal journeys through India. Lead by South Florida’s own Dawn B. Feinberg, a widely recognized certified yoga instructor and licensed movement therapist, sessions will also be accompanied by live music from world-recognized DJ Drez, known for his vast experience with the Jahta beat, Krishna Kishora Rico of The Mayapuris, healthy bites, cocktails, and more. Joining Feinberg will be special guest instructors Christy Nones McKenzie and Paul Toliuszis.

Since premiering during Art Basel 2009, Wynwood Walls, Miami’s open air “museum of the streets” has continued to attract visitors from around the world. Currently encompassing more than 40 dazzling, cutting edge murals created by respected street artists from Asia, Europe, Latin America and the United States, Wynwood Walls continues to evolve each year and has become one of Art Basel’s most sought after destinations. Headlining the vast array of programing for 2013 is an exhibit entitled “Women on the Walls.” Co-curated with arts guru Jeffrey Deitch,”Women on the Walls” will highlight nine, large scale original murals and a rare gallery exhibition presenting the works of international artists including: Lady Pink, Maya Hayuk, Swoon, Miss Van, Faith 47, Sheryo, Aiko, Claw Money, Fafi, Jess&Katie, Kashink, Myla, Shansia Hassani and Too Fly.

This colorful backdrop provides the perfect atmosphere for an energizing and uplifting yoga experience to prepare for the weekend’s Art Basel activities.
To reserve your spot during the third annual YogArt, visit www.yogartevent.com for pricing and a complete schedule of activities. Tickets are available on the YogArt website in advance, as well as on-site. Miami is the #1 most vulnerable city to sea level rise. Miami’s HighWaterLine Project in partnership with the Magic City Bicycle Collective are organizing a bike ride through the streets of Miami to tour our future waterfront considering 6 feet of sea level rise projected by the end of the century. Arrive 30 minutes early if you need your tires pumped, or if you need minor bicycle adjustments.

Please wear as much blue as possible on this ride. We will be filmed from the air for a short video on climate change resilience in Miami. Your participation in this event will communicate to our elected officials that you care about this issue.

The ride ends at Blackbird Ordinary, where all cyclists wearing blue can partake in free food and beer.

The HighWaterLine Project is a public art project that brings awareness of climate change by chalking the future sea level line. Chalking the line in Miami will occur on November 13, 14, and 17 in the morning. Go to https://www.facebook.com/ResilientMiami for more information.

If you’re allergic to the metric system, corn starch, or unbridled joy, you’d probably be more comfortable watching Matlock than at the starting blocks of this color-filled 5k.

But if you’re itching for a great time and not from a bad case of diaper rash, Color Me Rad Miami is the run for you.

By intelligent design or evolution, man was meant to run for one thing and one thing only: to stay alive. Pamplona was the first real race organized for what running should be: running from stuff that’s going to kill, gore, or maim you.

Luckily, we’ve evolved to where we only hunt for attractive potential mates, we only gather for extreme couponing, and we only run to benefit charities and our cardiovascular system.

So quit lollygagging and join us for the race that’s been ruining all other 5Ks since 2012 at Color Me Rad Miami .

Color Me Rad: gluten-free running since 2012 (all previous years were full of gluten).

Toning and sculpting locals and celebrities alike, Pure Barre is the latest fitness trend to hit South Florida. Stars like Madonna, Zooey Deschanel and Natalie Portman (that Black Swan body didn’t materialize overnight) all sculpted their stunning dancer-esque physiques using the barre technique, which incorporates small isometric movements to effectively target problem areas women struggle with the most such as abs, hips, seat and arms while integrating stretching sessions to elongate muscles and prevent bulk.

Pure Barre Miami has already sculpted hundreds of bodies into pure perfection and now, in honor of its one-year anniversary “barre-ty”, they are inviting the community to join them for an evening of celebratory pampering featuring pop-up beauty “barres” by GBS Beauty Store, healthy bites and handcrafted cocktail shots by LIQS.

Pop-up pampering stations include complimentary mini-manicures at the Purely Polished Mani Barre featuring the hottest nail shades by Deborah Lipmann and Butter London, a Fall Lip Barre featuring Lipstick Queen and Sara Happ, and a Brighten Up Eye Barre with all the creams, concealers and powders the lid can hold.

Guests will also enjoy an exclusive pop-up shop by Athleta featuring the latest workout gear for the season and giveaways throughout the night. In addition, the first 100 guests will receive a GBS gift bag filled with must-have beauty essentials.

Founded by dancer, choreographer and fitness guru Carrie Rezabek Dorr in 2001, the Pure Barre workout has exploded in popularity. Since it began franchising in 2009, more than 100 Pure Barre studios have opened nationwide. Pure Barre Miami opened in 2012 at 205 Altara Avenue in Coral Gables. Color Me Wrong at Color Mob 5K

We love unique events and were long overdue for some much-needed exercise so we thought we would check out the Color Mob 5K at Oleta River State Park this past Saturday August 17th. The Color Mob is basically a 5K combined with the Holi Festival (Indian Festival of Color).  So imagine this — as you are running your course, you come across multiple stations where people throw colored powder at you. Sounds like it could be a blast, right?  It was… an incredibly annoying blast. We were assured prior to the race that the powder washed off easily, which turned out to be an utter fucking lie. This powder was a c*nt and a half to wash off. First, we tried regular water while at the park and that didn’t work.  Then once we got home we tried soap, then a sugar scrub, then deep cleansing shampoo, then rubbing alcohol and finally astringent (which worked the best to clean up the last few traces).  Thank-the-Lord we were able to help scrub each other. Even then, it took well over an hour to get it all off.  We felt bad for other participants who were not lucky enough to have someone to scrub them.  On the bright side, it turned into a nice little beauty day complete with mani-pedis to literally clip and scrub the blue from under our nails.

Video of one of the Color Stations

Before you participate in any events like this be sure to consider a few things:

  • Make sure that you do not wear anything you wouldn’t want stained.
  • Consider whether or not you’re okay with some of the powder coming into contact with your vehicle.
  • Contact past participants and make sure that the colors wash off easily.

So yeah, it sounds like a great idea in theory…. just make sure to plan accordingly. :)

2013 Asian Pacific American Heritage Month Celebration Citizenship Clinic and Health Fair 5/11/13

2013 Asian Pacific American Heritage Month Celebration – Citizenship Clinic & Health Fair
2013-0511-flyer-ceMay 11, 2013, 11 am – 3 pm
NANAY Community Center
659 NE 125 Street
North Miami, FL

The Asian American Federation of Florida (AAFF), NANAY, Florida Chinese Federation, Florida Department of Health – Miami-Dade County, Florida Immigrant Coalition (FLIC), GOPIO-FL, Miami-Dade County’s Office of Community Advocacy, NAAPAC-FL, OCA South Florida Chapter, Thai-American Association of South Florida, United Chinese Association of Florida, and World Kwong Tung Community Association – Miami Chapter cordially invite you to the 2013 Asian Pacific American Heritage Month (APAHM) Celebration through a Citizenship Clinic and Health Fair.

The coalition aims to build leadership embracing cultural values and promote inclusion of Asian Pacific American communities to celebrate the diversity of Florida’s population, and to foster civic engagement through U.S. citizenship.

The Citizenship Clinic is offering FREE ASSISTANCE to eligible individuals to complete the US naturalization application.

According to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), there are about 8 million eligible green card holders who haven’t chosen to become U.S. citizens yet.  Nearly 3 million Asian-American and Pacific Islanders are eligible or will be eligible soon; but only 276,000 of them were naturalized two years ago, the latest figures available.

If you are eligible to apply for citizenship, you will meet with a trained volunteer to fill out Form N-400 and assist with any additional requirements to complete your application.  For eligible low-income permanent residents, they may receive fee waiver for their application.

"South Florida has more than a quarter (over 125,000) of the Asian American Pacific Islander population in Florida," states Winnie Tang, AAFF President. "Yet, many of its residents aren’t citizens due to language barriers and the high cost of citizenship. Even fewer of them are part of the voting electorate.”

“We want to foster civic engagement of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders by encouraging them to become naturalized, and there is no better time than this May in celebration of Asian Pacific American Heritage Month,” continues Tang.  “The drive is part of a statewide effort to sign on Asian and Pacific Islander immigrants as U.S. citizens.”

AAFF will host a series of Citizenship Clinics in South Florida.  Here are workshop dates:  May 11at NANAY Community Center – Miami-Dade County, May 25 at Hope Lutheran Church – Manatee County, June 15 at Chinese Baptist Church of Miami – Miami-Dade County, and July 13 at Coral Springs Chinese Cultural Center – Broward County.

“We will help citizens-to-be fill out forms and will explain the U.S. citizenship process in their native language,” says Joy Bruce, MD, NANAY President.  “Due to the high cost of citizenship, the free workshop is designed to help green card holders determine their eligibility for citizenship.  FLIC trained volunteers will help people complete their naturalization application and determine whether they are eligible for various waivers.”

In addition to the Citizenship Clinic, in partnership with Florida Department of Health -  Miami-Dade County, a mini Health Fair will provide basic health screening and HIV & STD screening to encourage healthier living in the Asian American community and community-at-large.

For more information, please contact Winnie Tang, AAFF President, at call 305-753-8791, Dr. Joy Bruce, NANAY President, at 305-951-5552, or FLIC hotline at 1-888-541-2826.  You may visit FLIC website to learn more about the Citizenship Clinic via www.FLNewAmericans.org.

Sweetwater, FL 33174
Tickets cost $20 in advance, and $25 at the door. Purchase Online.

The City of Sweetwater has joined forces with the D Amor Foundation for Autism and is hosting a Zumbathon.

Come out and join City of Sweetwater Mayor Manny Maroño along with an all-star lineup of Zumba instructors to help raise money for families affected by autism. Money raised by the event will help families affected by autism by funding activities such as taekwondo, soccer, music, art and speech and occupational therapies.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), one in 50 children is diagnosed with autism or a related disorder. Autism is a developmental disorder that affects a child’s ability to communicate, process sensory information and also affects social functioning. According to Autism Speaks, autism is the fastest-growing developmental disability in the U.S., and costs a family about $60,000 a year. There is no medical detection or cure for autism, and boys are nearly five times more likely than girls to be affected.

The D Amor Foundation was founded by Maria and Jose Montalvo in honor of their son, Diego, who was diagnosed with autism at age two. Their goal is to help families affected by autism in South Florida and Puerto Rico find resources and access to therapies that can be costly and are not covered by traditional health insurance.

“This is a fun way for families to come together to help children battling autism,” says Maria Rivero Montalvo, president of the D Amor Foundation. “We’re here to provide hope and support. With the money raised by this Zumbathon, we will be able to help fund programs that can make a huge impact in these children’s lives.”

The D Amor Foundation’s mission is to provide hope, and to help children with autism achieve a better quality of life by providing families with resources, educational tools and access to therapies such as speech, occupational, art, music and sensory integration, all of which are integral to managing the disorder.
The event will be led by Zumba Jammer Meli Kirkwood along with Miami Zumba Instructors Zumba Carrie, Eli Pereira, Susan Luria, Henray Cedeño, Janet Rentería, Maria Amelia Linares-Hemelberg, Marie Lourdes Buitrago, Morgan Zumba Cuenvo and Yvette Orozco.

Maria Marin, international speaker and author, will be the presenter.
