Big Truck Days at MiaSci and Free Father’s Day admission 6/18-19

Miami Science Museum Celebrates Father’s Day In A Big Way and hosts Big Truck Days to launch new Moving Things exhibition
June 18 & 19th
Miami Science Museum
3280 South Miami Avenue
Miami, FL 33129.
Admission is FREE for dads on Father’s Day (Sunday, June 19th).

Miami Science Museum announces the launch of its newest exhibit: Moving Things on Saturday and Sunday, June 18-19, 2011, as part of the inaugural Big Truck Days weekend. Big Ryder and Miami-Dade County trucks, and several gourmet food trucks will be on site, as well as several hands-on activities for people of all ages to enjoy.

At Moving Things, sponsored by Ryder System, Inc., visitors will test their own brain vs. brawn in this fun hands-on exhibition focused on how things move from place to place – sometimes easily – sometimes with great effort…but always full of surprises. Moving Things will serve as a prototype exhibition for the new Miami Science Museum, scheduled to open in Museum Park in 2014 (Patricia and Phillip Frost Museum of Science).

Moving Things
Millions of trucks deliver billions of objects around the world each day. Tire changes, engine maintenance, refueling, vehicle speed, and location all need to be tracked to keep things moving smoothly. Without fleet management to coordinate all the details, deliveries would take longer, cost more, and, sometimes, not happen at all!

Visit Moving Things to experience:
Packing a Suitcase: Your bags are packed and you’re ready to go! But do you have all you need? The closer objects fit together, the more you can bring. Some shapes fit perfectly, leaving no gaps between them. Now that’s close packing!
Packing Parcels: Test how efficiently you can stow oddly shaped parts into two containers in relation to cost, volume, part orientation, weight and design.
Packing a Pallet: Boxes and barrels, containers and crates, parcels and pallets. If an object is odd sized or delicate, or when there are many items, you need special packaging to make moving safe and efficient. How many people pack onto a pallet? Find some friends and figure it out!
Turntable: Place different rolling objects, including rings, disks and spheres, on a rotating turntable. How long can you make them stay on the turntable without falling off?
Flow Table: Moving through air or water takes energy: the faster you go, the greater the drag. Some shapes are more efficient than others and size matters. What patterns do you see in the flow?
Traffic: Try your hand at managing a steady flow of traffic by putting discs of different shapes and sizes on an air-suspension track that moves the discs along. Can you avoid traffic-jams and tailgating?
Suitcase gyro: Pick up a suitcase from a stand and find that it moves on its own! A rapidly rotating object, such as the spinning flywheel inside the suitcase, has angular momentum, which causes the object to resist a change in its direction.

Big Truck Days, Saturday and Sunday, June 18-19th:
On display:
Miami-Dade County Hybrid Garbage Truck: The Miami-Dade Department of Solid Waste Management was the first municipal solid waste agency in the United States to take delivery of and put into service these advanced Series Hydraulic Hybrid Powered waste collection trucks. Benefits offered by this hybrid vehicle: reduction in diesel fuel consumption, by as much as 50%; cleaner air emissions; and reduced repair costs to the vehicle’s brake system.
Miami-Dade County Hybrid Bus: The County’s New Flyer 60 ft. articulated diesel-electric hybrid bus provides the following benefits: Improves fuel mileage by 20-35%, compared to conventional buses; and Lower green house gas emissions – NOx reductions of up to 50%.
Ryder’s Detroit Diesel Demand It All Tour Trailer

Activities:
Mousetrap Car: Students from the Museum’s Upward Bound program will show visitors how to build a ‘Mousetrap Car’. Visitors can build their own Mousetrap Cars and then race them. The best design wins a prize!
Ramp Control: For very young children – Use building blocks to create different size ramps and test how fast and how far your toy car can roll.
Lego Car Prototyping space: Use Legos to build and test your own solar- or air-powered car! Then, snap a picture of your creation and post it to our gallery screens to make it part of the exhibit.
Kid in a Candy Box: Visitors can try their hand at packing and stacking different sized candy boxes into a case to see how much they can fit.

Admission
Admission is free for Miami Science Museum members and children under 3; students (with valid ID), seniors (62+) and children 3 – 12, $10.95; adults are $14.95. Entry to Stingray Sea Lab is included in the price of admission. Dads get in FREE on Father’s Day, Sunday, June 19th.

A wide variety of Irish crafts will be available for sale by high quality vendors.

This is the twelfth year the Festival has been held in Coral Gables at Fred B. Hartnett Ponce Circle Park. The site of the Festival is named for former Coral Gables Mayor, the late Fred B. Hartnett, a long-time member of The Emerald Society.

For the past 33 years, the St. Patrick’s Day Committee has organized a St. Patrick’s Day Parade or Festival. About the artist:
A descendent from Spanish and Guarani Indians, Victor Espinola was born into a family of musical talents from Paraguay. He discovered his love for music by the age of seven after his father gave him a guitar. At the age of 10, Victor began to learn the skill of playing the World famous Harp. He honed his skills on the harp as well as vocals, and eventually was asked to perform in many Latin American countries such as Brazil, Argentina, Chile, and Ecuador. By the age of seventeen he had the opportunity to tour for two years in Europe, playing in Switzerland, Italy, Austria and Germany. This won him recognition as one of the best harpists in the world. Victor now composes, produces and performs his original music. With his unique blend of Flamenco, Gypsy, Brazilian, Middle Eastern, Afro, American Pop and Dance music, he is in demand everywhere he plays. “I never seen anybody play the harp like that… he is Virtuoso” is a quote from Yanni the first time he saw Victor playing. Yanni invited Victor to be part of his 2003/2010 World Tour. Victor’s agenda is without boundaries, and his only quest is to continue sharing and spreading his music to many cultures around the world.

Breakfast With Santa Toy Distribution and Brunch 12/19/10

Economically Disadvantaged Haitian-American Children to Receive Holiday Cheer at the Fourth Annual Breakfast With Santa
December 19, 11:00AM – 2:00PM
J.W. Marriott Hotel
1109 Brickell Ave. Miami, FL

Dedicated Haitian-American Business Leaders, J.W. Marriott, and Loyal Supporters Sponsor the Event for More than 300 Children

“Breakfast With Santa,” an annual Holiday event, much-anticipated by underprivileged Haitian-American children, is scheduled for Sunday, December 19 from 11:00AM – 2:00PM, at the J.W. Marriott Hotel, 1109 Brickell Ave. Miami, FL. Children (ages 5 to 12) from Little Haiti and other areas with a concentration of Haitian immigrants, will be treated to a delectable brunch, receive new toys, and take home cherished photos with Santa and his elves.

Haitian American professionals, business owners, and sponsors volunteer hundreds of hours of their time and provide financial resources to assist some of Miami-Dade County’s most disadvantaged children, whose plight has been worsened by the nation’s economic downturn.

According to the U.S. Census (2000), the poverty rate in Little Haiti is over 44%, more than three times the average rate of the Miami Fort Lauderdale Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) (14%). The average income in Little Haiti is $15,277. With Florida having one of the highest unemployment rates in the country, these families are experiencing especially acute hardship. Because of this, the 2010 BWS event will be is particularly special and necessary.

“Breakfast with Santa” is a labor of love. “Everyone involved truly believes that this year is even more poignant and essential due to the number of Haitian families who have lost their homes, jobs, and security, as well as for the many who have also lost loved ones in the January earthquake,” said Judith Joseph, one of the chairpersons and founders of the event. “We want to make sure that these children and families know that we are thinking of them and that we care.” Learn more at www.BreakfastWithSantaSF.org.

Kimberly Bacardi’s Good Karma Group has been instrumental in collecting thousands of toys at various events and through personal outreach to individuals and companies throughout South Florida as part of the Breakfast With Santa efforts. In addition to collecting toys for Miami’s underprivileged Haitian children, GKG, which has actors Vincent De Paul and George Lopez as prominent members and has deep roots in the charitable community, will also visit Haiti very soon to distribute new toys to that nation’s children, a blessing many of them would not otherwise receive. Learn more at Facebook.

While previous sponsors may be feeling the pinch of a weak economy, their commitment to the children in the targeted communities remains strong for the 2010 event. In addition to the JW Marriott, the following individuals and companies have sponsored the event for the past four years:

Eighth Annual Pet Blessing Service At St. John’s on the Lake 10/3/10

All Creatures Great (Dane) And Small
Eighth Annual “Pet Blessing” Service for the Community To Be Held At St. John’s on the Lake
October 3, at 11 a.m.
St. John’s sanctuary
4760 Pine Tree Drive, Miami Beach

September 20, 2010 – Realizing that four legged and finned companions are an integral part of many families, St. John’s on the Lake United Methodist Church is once again hosting a favorite community tradition with St. John’s new Pastor Chris McNeill conducting the eighth annual “pet blessing” service on Sunday, October 3, at 11 a.m. in the St. John’s sanctuary. The pet blessing is free and open to the entire community.

Well-behaved pets and their human companions of all faiths and denominations are welcome at this special service. Following the service, St. John’s congregation and their pet guests will host a special “yappy hour” on the church’s outdoor patio overlooking Surprise Lake. New this year will be a pet adoption and fundraising drive for Spotted Dog Animal Rescue.

“We added the dog adoption to this year’s service because there are many animals in our community that are deserving of a loving home,” said Pastor McNeill. “How blessed would these orphans be if they got adopted at a pet blessing service.”

The St. John’s pet blessing service celebrates the Feast Day of St. Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals and the environment. Feast Day pays homage to the founder of the Franciscan Order who was renowned as a lover of all creation, and each pet participating in the service will receive a St. Francis medallion to commemorate the day and their patron saint.

“The annual pet blessing is one of our favorite and most heartwarming community events,” said Pastor McNeill. “Our furry, finned and feathered family members are such a special part of our lives. This service gives us a chance to affirm that ‘all creatures, great and small’ are deserving of our love and care.”

St. John’s on the Lake was founded in Miami Beach in the 1920s in an upper room of Smith’s Casino on Ocean Drive, south of First Street. Today, St. John’s is celebrating its 10th year as Florida’s only Reconciling Ministry. The Reconciling Ministries Network is a growing movement of United Methodist individuals, congregations, campus ministries, and other groups working for the full participation of all people in the United Methodist Church, embracing the entire spectrum of race, age, gender, family status, sexual orientation, heritage, physical ability, economic status, and religious background.

St. John’s is located at 4760 Pine Tree Drive, Miami Beach. For more information, call the church office at (305) 531-7166 or visit www.stjohnsmiamibeach.com.

SUNBOX ELEVEN WINERY CELEBRATES THE HOLIDAYS
ENO’S WINE BAR, SOUTH BEACH
920 LINCOLN ROAD, MIAMI BEACH, FL
WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 23, 2009
6:00 P.M. – 10 P.M.

A not-so-typical California winemaker’s event will be held in your own backyard of South Florida. SUNBOX Eleven Winery owner, Sunny Fraser, and her Chef Winemaker Superdave Gordon, aren’t waking up on a vineyard next to the Napa Valley Wine Trail, but just down the street at their winery headquarters off lush Old Cutler Road here in their hometown of Miami. They travel back and forth to their cooperative winery in California to handcraft their very rare, limited production wines in single barrels until they age to perfection and then bring them back to Florida to share with the local hot-spots.

Miami’s own SUNBOX Eleven Winery will be celebrating the holidays and the release of their much-anticipated second vintage of artisan wines at Eno’s Wine Bar on South Beach. Sunny & Chef Superdave will be entertaining guests and signing bottles while people mingle and holiday shop in a relaxed environment of food and wine.

COMPLIMENTARY hors d’oeuvres will be served from 6 P.M. – 8 P.M.

Mention this (Facebook) invitation and provide your business card/contact info and your 1st wine pour is FREE, compliments of SUNBOX Eleven Winery.

Bass Museum Of Art And Café Bustelo Commission Limited-Edition Demitasse Cup

Bustelo Cups 005b

Bass Museum Of Art And Café Bustelo Commission Limited-Edition Demitasse Cup

Created by visual artist Dzine

MIAMI BEACH, FL (November 2, 2009) – Bass Museum of Art and Café Bustelo announce their partnership to commission a yearly series of numbered, limited-edition demitasse cups created each year by a different contemporary visual artist of Hispanic background.

As organizations with rich historical pasts and vibrant futures, Café Bustelo and Bass Museum searched for an artist whose work reflected this energy. For the first cup in the series, they recruited Chicago-based artist Carlos Rolon (a.k.a. Dzine), whose work is inspired by beauty, desire, pattern, op-art, and the juxtaposition of highbrow and Chicano lowrider Kustom Kulture. The artist himself grew up drinking this traditional Hispanic-style espresso. In fact, his mother to this day orders a monthly supply from Miami, making him a natural fit for the project. The demitasse cup reflects his signature manifestation of bold colors and patterns.

While the cups offer an opportunity to take a piece of art and culture home, the Bass Museum also invited Dzine to create an all-over, site-specific wall painting presented in their new café and lounge. The café project is part of Dzine’s solo exhibition at the Bass Museum, which includes new sculpture, paintings and installations made specially for the exhibition.

The Dzine demitasse cups — a perfect holiday gift — will be available exclusively at Bass Museum of Art and online at www.bassmuseum.org, starting November 28. Each cup retails for $20. All proceeds from sales will benefit Bass Museum of Art.

About Dzine: From site-specific wall installations, to his custom Cadillac Fleetwood and crystal encrusted sculptures and paintings, Dzine’s prolific manifestation of colors, patterns, textures and sound fuse into a modern phenomenon that reveals thought-provoking combinations. Continuously inspired by Lowrider and Kustom Kulture, Dzine has been able to bolster the semantics of this genre by stretching the boundaries further with his traditional studio practice and bringing never- before-seen products to the table that contribute a unique vernacular to contemporary art.

About Bass Museum of Art: Located in the heart of Miami Beach, the Bass Museum of Art collects and exhibits some of the world’s finest art from the past through the present. Founded in 1963 when the City of Miami Beach accepted a gift of 500 works of art from collectors John and Johanna Bass, the museum has since doubled in size to 35,000 square feet, including new galleries and outdoor exhibition spaces. In addition to housing one of the best collections of Renaissance and Baroque artwork, Bass Museum’s temporary exhibitions for 2009/2010 curated by Executive Director Silvia Karman Cubiña include Dzine; Where Do We Go From Here?/Selections from The Jumex Collection; and The Mummy Project. The Bass Museum also offers lectures, film and video series, music and dance performances, open houses, free family days, and educational symposia on a regular basis. www.bassmuseum.org

St. John’s On The Lake Seventh Annual “Pet Blessing” Service For The Community 10/4/09

ST. JOHN’S ON THE LAKE CHURCH TO HOST SEVENTH ANNUAL “PET BLESSING” SERVICE FOR THE COMMUNITY
Fido, Fluffy and Ferris the Ferret of all Denominations are Welcome
Sunday, October 4

Realizing that pets are an integral part of many families, St. John’s on the Lake United Methodist Church is once again hosting a favorite community tradition when Pastor Melissa Pisco conducts the seventh annual “pet blessing” service on Sunday, October 4, at 11 a.m. in the St. John’s sanctuary. Well-behaved pets and their human companions of all faiths and denominations are welcome at this special service. Following the service, St. John’s congregation and their pet guests will host a special “yappy hour” on the church’s outdoor patio overlooking Surprise Lake.

The St. John’s pet blessing service celebrates the Feast Day of St. Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals and the environment. This Feast Day pays homage to the founder of the Franciscan Order who was renowned as a lover of all creation.

“The annual pet blessing is one of our favorite and most heartwarming community events,” said Pastor Pisco. “Our furry, finned and feathered family members are such a special part of our lives. This service gives us a chance to reinforce the spiritual message that ‘all creatures, great and small’ are deserving of our love and compassion. It’s also a sacred time to honor our companions for the peace and love they lend to our anxious world.”

St. John’s is located at 4760 Pine Tree Drive, Miami Beach. For more information, call the church office at (305) 531-7166.

Bayfront Park’s Tree Lighting Ceremony 11/28/08

Bring the whole family to Bayfront Park’s Tree Lighting Ceremony and join us in kicking off the holiday season! This FREE event, the day after Thanksgiving, will include live holiday music and the “official” lighting of the tree.

Created by Christmas Designers, Inc. (with over 25 years of experience throughout South Florida), the tree is a striking, 50 ft. tall artificial tree adorned with a custom lighting package. It will stay lit every night thereafter and will remain in the park through Christmas and New Year’s Eve.

Sing along to your favorite carols with Crazy Pianos, The Greatest Show on Earth! This piano duo, flown in from the Netherlands, will sing all of the holiday favorites and take requests. In anticipation of the opening of Crazy Pianos (a unique and wildly popular dueling piano bar, full service restaurant, and late night concert venue) in CocoWalk, they have taken their show on the road! Crazy Pianos, currently open in the Netherlands and Spain, will mark their U.S. debut with their facility in Coconut Grove’s CocoWalk in February 2009, at the space formerly occupied by Tu Tu Tango. Their upcoming global expansion includes locations in London, Dubai, Disney Paris,
San Francisco, Las Vegas, and New York City.
