The Center for Leadership at Florida International University is pleased to announce that Dr. Noel Tichy, a distinguished professor, renowned author and an expert at training leaders in Fortune 500 companies, will visit the Modesto Maidique campus on June 4.

Dr. Tichy will deliver a discussion-style presentation and share insights from his most recently co-authored book, Judgment on the Front Line: How Smart Companies Win by Trusting Their People, at 3:30 p.m. at the College of Business Complex, CBC 232 located at 11200 SW 8th Street. The lecture, which is part of the Center’s The Leadership Lectures series, is free and open to the public. A book signing and reception will follow.
Judgment on the Front Line, co-authored with Chris DeRose, focuses on empowering front-line associates to gain unique insight into the customers, competition and inner workings of their organizations.

“We are honored to host Dr. Tichy, a leading management expert with decades of leadership practice and research, at FIU,” said Modesto A. Maidique, president emeritus of FIU and executive director of the Center for Leadership. “Along with his highly-regarded literary contributions and work in academia, his real-world success with some of the world’s top companies has set Dr. Tichy apart.” 

Dr. Tichy is a former professor of Management & Organizations at the Ross School of Business at The University of Michigan. He first gained respect for his work at General Electric in the 1980s, where as head of GE’s Leadership Center, he directed the company’s management education and spearheaded its transformation to action learning. Dr. Tichy later began providing consulting services in both the private and public sectors as a senior partner in Action Learning Associates, where he expanded his clientele to include Best Buy, PepsiCo, Coca Cola, Daimler-Benz, GM, Nokia, Nomura Securities, PepsiCo, Royal Dutch Shell and 3M.

Recognized by BusinessWeek and Business 2.0 as one of the “Top 10 Management Gurus,” Dr. Tichy is highly regarded as a staple of management literacy, having written several articles and books and served on the editorial boards of a variety of management publications. The unstoppable Weird Miami Bus Tours continues with artist/curator/art activist, César Trasobares.
Working in Miami for more than three decades Trasobares will guide us through the stranger parts
of Cuban cultural and historic landscapes that Miami has to offer.
 
In his own work, César Trasobares revels in the political fallout of Cuba’s exiles in Miami.  Primarily made through
collage, installation and performance, Trasobares focuses on the Cuban rituals that have taken root onto
American soil and that have deeply affected the social fabric of the city of Miami.
 
From the exhibition, “The Cuban Evolution," art critic Benjamin Forgey of the Washington Post notes that
"César Trasobares is the one artist in the group who confronts the bicultural situation absolutely head-on
[in a piece from Trasobares’s ‘Quinceañera’ series]." This fearless spirit will extend to Cesar as tour-guide
for the Weird Miami bus tours!
 
On Saturday, May 4th, 2013, Trasobares will discuss the Cuban cultural imprint that has been evolving in Miami
for more than half a century.  The tour will be expansive: from talking about the monumental projects Trasobares has brought to Miami as Executive Director of Miami-Dade County’s Art In Public Places Program, to the personal and miniscule; Trasobares will draw from his personal memoirs-in-progress currently titled, Among Friends.
Trasobares will not only share stories from his personal relationships with many esteemed artists, but we will
be able to hear these stories on-site!
 
The tour will meet at the BasFisherInvitational space first. From here we will venture through historic area of Miami to view site specific works of art and learn about Miami’s Cuban heritage all with the bonus of a bottomless cup of Spanish sangria!

César E. Trasobares (born 1949 in Holguín, Cuba), is a Cuban-American artist specializing in Collage, Installation, and Performance. In 1970 he studied in the Miami Dade Community College, Associate of Arts, in Miami, Florida. He is a graduate of Florida Atlantic University (Bachelor of Arts), Florida. In the past four decades, Trasobares has organized and exhibited in numerous exhibitions. From 1985 to 1990 he served as Executive Director of Miami-Dade
County’s Art In Public Places Program. Keep an eye on the de la Cruz calendar: Trasorares will be giving a series of
lectures drawing from his memoir, Among Friends; the most recent lecture being “Carlos Alfonso In Context: Public and Private Voices.”

Garza, Former United States Marine, will be the keynote speaker of their next Leadership Lectures series.  Garza will deliver a public lecture on “Military Leadership Fundamentals To Help You Lead Your Ship,” where he will offer insights from his years in various leadership roles, which have contributed to his very illustrious career. The lecture, which is part of the Center’s The Leadership Lectures series, is free and open to the public.
 
Garza has spent over 38 years in military service as both a USAF enlisted engineer and a Marine Corps Infantry Officer. Over the past 34 years he has served in a variety of staff and command assignments in the Marine Corps, Joint Staffs, and in Coalition Combat Operations in Afghanistan. Throughout his career Garza applied the military leadership fundamentals to build highly efficient organizations from recruiting duty, to command billets and counter insurgency operations, to senior level staffs such as the Inspector General of the Marine Corps. During this time he gained extensive international experience serving in Latin America and the Middle East working with U.S. military services, local communities, government agencies, allied forces, and civilian relief organizations.

The Public is invited to help develop a regional blueprint for Southeast Florida. A live webcast will be provided for those who cannot attend in person. During the highly interactive summit, attendees will participate in live keypad polls throughout the day and personally record videos with their visions for the region. The public will also get a first peek at a comprehensive model for the seven counties in 2060, which is currently under development, and will provide input for the creation of alternate future scenarios. Attendees will design the future alongside urban planners and transportation experts. The goal of Seven50 is to create stronger, more diverse communities, a cleaner environment and a stronger economy for the region comprised of Monroe, Miami-Dade, Broward, Palm Beach, Martin, St. Lucie, and Indian River counties. Led by the South Florida and Treasure Coast Regional Planning Councils and the Southeast Florida Regional Partnership (SFRP), a collaboration of more than 200 public, private and civic stakeholders from the region, the initiative seeks to develop a 50-year blueprint for a more prosperous and resilient future. The Center for Leadership at Florida International University is pleased to announce that Gerry Cahill, president and CEO of Carnival Cruise Lines, will be the keynote speaker of their next Leadership Lectures series.  Cahill will deliver a public lecture on “Carnival Cruise Lines: A Cultural Transformation,” where he will address why the most successful cruise line in the world is undergoing a significant cultural change and how they plan on implementing it.  The lecture, which is part of the Center’s The Leadership Lectures series, is free and open to the public.
 
At the helm of the world’s largest and most popular cruise line since 2007, Cahill oversees 43,000 employees and 24 cruise ships that carry 4.4 million passengers annually. Prior to being appointed to his current position, Cahill served as executive vice president and chief financial officer for Carnival Corporation & plc.  He joined Carnival Cruise Lines’ parent company, Carnival Corporation, in 1994, where he served as senior vice president (finance and chief financial officer) and vice president (finance). 
 
The Leadership Lectures series, presented by Mercantil Commercebank, features world-class, accomplished and influential leaders with expertise ranging from business and philanthropy to public service and academic research. Learn the basics of improvisational theater (acting) in a small, relaxed improv class. Classes are taught through classic theater warm-ups, exercises, and games. The games make learning improv fun and easy. Each game works on skills that will make you more comfortable and focused. In the process of playing these simple, yet powerful games you’ll find yourself laughing and having fun. No prior experience is necessary. The games will unleash your innate acting ability. Explore skills like creative thinking, self-confidence, listening, brainstorming, teamwork, empathy and communication while having loads of fun and laughs. Workshop size is limited to provide each student more personal attention.

Carlos Rivera is a 13-year veteran of the South Florida improv scene and a Mainstage Cast Member at the Just The Funny Theater & Training Center. In addition to performing, Carlos also serves as an improv & sketch instructor and one of the managing directors. Carlos has received coaching from some of the countries top improvisors and has attended intensives & master workshops at major improv institutions including Second City in Chicago & the Upright Citizens Brigade (UCB) in NYC. Carlos’ improv team has performed at several major improv events including the Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, Gainseville, Sarasota, and Miami Improv Festival, as well as the Del Close Marathon at UCB. Carlos has also performed in several local plays including "Don’t Dress for Dinner", "The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged)", a British Panto retelling of "Cinderella", as well as local murder mystery productions.

The Theatre Lab at the Deering Estate at Cutler is a performance art series and residency opportunity developed in partnership with the Theatre League of South Florida. Through monthly theater performances, workshops and lectures held at the Deering Estate at Cutler, these diverse theatrical opportunities will attract new audiences to this art form, provide rare professional development opportunities for actors and writers and test innovative approaches to theory and practice. Traditional as well as emerging performances that fit within the scale and setting of the historic Estate are welcomed and encouraged. Theatre Lab ultimately hopes to contribute to a meaningful and engaging cultural dialogue between artists and their audiences across the landscape of South Florida.

All programs are offered as a SUNDAY Matinee performance beginning at 2:30 (meet the artist reception at 2:00) in the Estate’s Visitor Center Exhibit Hall and will generally conclude at 3:30/4:00 pm. Cost: $12 and includes entrance to the Estate.

Kets de Vries will deliver a public lecture on "The Leadership Challenge: A Cultural Odyssey,". The lecture, which is part of the Center’s The Leadership Lectures series, is free and open to the public.

Known as one of Europe’s leading management thinkers, Kets de Vries brings a different view to the subjects of leadership and individual and organizational change. He specializes in the areas of leadership, career dynamics, executive stress, entrepreneurship, family business, succession planning, cross-cultural management, team building, coaching, and the dynamics of corporate transformation.

Kets de Vries is a clinical professor of leadership development at INSEAD, one of the world’s largest graduate business schools with campuses in France, Singapore and Abu Dhabi. He is also the founder of INSEAD’s Global Leadership Center. In addition, Kets de Vries has lectured at numerous management institutions around the world and has been the author, co-author and editor of over 35 books. His books and articles have been translated into thirty-one languages.

Programs Made Possible By $150,000 Grant from MetLife Foundation
 
Through its Tripod + Program funded by a $150,000 grant from MetLife Foundation, Miami Science Museum is offering Tripod +, a series of 10 free, monthly hands-on science workshops for Spanish-speaking families. The programs, available to up to 30 people per session, are open to families with children in grades three through six. Pre-registration is required.
 
Tripod + addresses the need for science-rich learning opportunities for children and their families, in particular families whose access to these types of resources may otherwise be severely constrained. The overall goal of Tripod + is to provide out-of-school-time experiences and resources that will strengthen the role of parents and caregivers to support their children’s science learning.
 
All programs take place from 1-3 p.m. and lunch will be provided.
