Miami Science Museum brings you a Wild Evening as we explore the wonders of nature through conservation, taking a journey through Wild Carpathia followed by a BEARTREK adventure with two of the world’s leading nature conservationists. The evening kicks off with Paul Lister, Founder of The European Nature Trust, showcasing excerpts from his stunning documentary highlighting Romania’s beautiful yet deeply threatened landscapes and cultural heritage. Then join Chris Morgan, ecologist, bear specialist and television host for PBS Nature, National Geographic and BBC, as BEARTREK follows Chris’s global adventure to fund and film critical bear conservation projects in Alaska, Peru, Borneo and the Arctic.

About Paul Lister
After 20 years in the furniture business Paul founded and endowed The European Nature Trust In 2001 and in 2003 purchased Alladale, a 23,000 acre traditional Highland sporting estate, with a view to transforming it into a Wilderness Reserve with a focus on the restoration of native flora and fauna. The European Nature Trust (TENT) helps protect and restore wilderness areas in Europe, whilst encouraging rural communities to benefit via youth education, tourism and local industry. The Foundation’s work is currently focused on two European extremes; first the Scottish Highlands; and secondly the relatively unknown Romanian Carpathians, often referred to as Europe’s Yellowstone or Amazon rainforest.

About Chris Morgan
Ecologist Chris Morgan is no stranger to adventure. Over the last 20 years he has worked as a wildlife researcher, wilderness guide, and environmental educator on every continent where bears exist. Chris is the featured character, host and narrator in the PBS NATURE special that he helped to create, ‘Bears of the Last Frontier’. As one of the most gregarious, personable, and good hearted larger-than-life scientists you’ll ever meet, his on-camera appearances which include being featured on David Letterman have brought him incredible opportunities to promote the value of conservation for us all. In 2003, the Environmental Education Association of Washington honored Chris as Outstanding Environmental Educator of the year. In 2008 his contributions to grizzly bear conservation in the USA were honored with an award from the Interagency Grizzly Bear Committee, a government panel responsible for recovery of the great bear.

Now that abstraction in various forms has held sway during much of the last hundred years, representational art does not have the authority it once had. However, many people are still fascinated by the capacity of art to represent things we not only cannot see or can only imagine—gods, angels, demons, unicorns, mermaids—but things we encounter in everyday life. People have long taken pleasure not only in representations of such things that are self-evidently hand-made—paintings, drawings, prints, sculptures—but in representations in which evidence of human making is not immediately apparent. In such cases, the artist provokes the viewer to mistake the representation for the thing represented itself. In this lecture, Ivan Gaskell looks at such deceptive phenomena in Western art practice, and asks what might actually be going on when we look at such pictures—the trompe l’oeil that fools the eye.

Ivan Gaskell is Professor of Cultural History and Museum Studies at the Bard Graduate Center, New York City, where he also Head of the Focus Project, coordinating research, teaching, exhibiting, and publishing. His work on material culture addresses intersections among history, art history, anthropology, museology, and philosophy. His many publications include Vermeer’s Wager: Speculations on Art History, Theory, and Art Museums, and six co-edited books in the series Cambridge Studies in Philosophy and the Arts. He has contributed to numerous journals and edited volumes, and has curated many experimental exhibitions. He regularly writes contemporary art reviews for artUS.

Mirabai Ceiba expresses their hearts through music in Spanish, English and Sanskrit on Saturday, January 14, 2012 at 7:30pm at Unity on the Bay, located at 411 NE 21 Street, Miami, Florida. Ticket prices for the concert are $20 in advance, $25 at the door. These events are open to the public and tickets may be purchased at Unity on the Bay’s bookstore, www.unityonthebay.org, www.spiritvoyage.com and by calling 888.735.4800.
The name Mirabai Ceiba expresses the influences of both India and Native Latin America. The Ceiba is the sacred tree of Latin America, where these trees are never cut but are allowed to grow very tall. “We wish our music could be like that kind of tree, with roots deep in the Mother Earth and branches extending wide into Father Sky. Mirabai is for us the wandering, the devotion, the inspiration in all the different aspects of divinity,” says Algelika and Markus.
In 2001, their eyes touched in the crowd at a street fair in Edinbourgh, Scottland and their love took hold of them. They created together Mirabai Ceiba expressing their hearts through music and sacred chant. There is something magical about the combination of Angelika Baumbach and Markus Sieber. “Their music comes from a pure space of love and devotion. It is soothing, peaceful, and very meditative, ” says Deva Premal. Their voices and skillful dance with their instruments is so authentic and pure that you feel the sacred sound current in such a precise way that your heartbeat begins to beat with the rhythm and your blood flows with the melody of their song. A concert with Mirabai Ceiba is uplifting, purifying, inspiring and altogether powerful.
With deep, rich journeys into the sound that is lush, earthy and otherworldly, you will travel your inner universe through their music. Their incredible vocals are accompanied by Angelika’s harp and Markus’ guitar to stunning effect. Ancient Gurmukhi Mantra’s, sacred chants and songs of spiritual poetry by Rumi, Thich Nhat Hanh, Kabir and their own lyrics blend in a unique way towards the One.

About Stop, Breathe and Smile

Maria Buszek Talk 11/10/11

Maria Buszek: talk
7pm Thursday November 10th, 2011
Bas Fisher Invitational
180 NE 39th Street, suite 210
Miami, FL 33137
FREE and open to the public

The BFI presents a talk by Feminist Art Historian Dr. Maria Elena Buszek exploring the histories of and connections between contemporary feminist art and popular music.

How many members of the art community know about the music criticism of feminist artists like Lorraine O’Grady and Mary Harron? Or journalist and Redstockings co-founder Ellen Willis? Or the art criticism of musician Kim Gordon? All of whom were writing in the era of punk feminist musicians like Lydia Lunch, Cosey Fanni Tutti, and DISBAND, just to name a few renowned women directly tapped into the alternative music and art scenes of feminism’s second wave. And many of today’s most compelling contemporary feminist figures–from Riot Grrrl pioneer Kathleen Hanna to the LTTR collective to the electro-shock-rocker Peaches–have deep, seamless ties to both the art and music worlds. In this lecture, University of Colorado, Denver art historian Maria Elena Buszek will explore the histories of and connections between contemporary feminist art and popular music, and propose the necessity of the joyful, critical, and insistently embodied approach to culture to be found in the resulting discourse.

Maria Elena Buszek, Ph.D. is a scholar, critic, curator, and Associate Professor of Art History at the University of Colorado Denver, where she teaches courses on Modern and contemporary art.

Her recent publications include the books Pin-Up Grrrls: Feminism, Sexuality, Popular Culture and Extra/ordinary: Craft and contemporary art; contributions to the anthologies It’s Time for Action (There’s No Option): About Feminism; Blaze: Discourse on Art, Women, and Feminism; and Contemporary Artists; catalogue essays for numerous national and international exhibitions; and articles and criticism in such journals as Art in America, Art Journal, Photography Quarterly, and TDR: The Journal of Performance Studies. She has also been a regular contributor to the popular feminist magazine BUST since 1999. Her current book project explores the ties between contemporary activist art and popular music.

Creating lasting connections between brands and stakeholders with Steven Ryan

The American Advertising Federation of Miami (AAF Miami) presents a discussion about one of the most integral aspects of a business, branding. VSA Partners, Partner, Steven Ryan will speak about what VSA refers to as High Performance Branding. Ryan will discuss how he and his partners at VSA believe branding can drive behavior. Hors d’oeuvres will be served and parking is open to guests after 5:00pm. AAF Miami members are free, non-members are $20.00 per person and AIGA and AAF-Ft. Lauderdale members $10.00 per person. All students with proper ID are welcomed and free of charge courtesy of the Advertising Federation of Greater Miami Scholarship Foundation.

Industry professionals, and students alike, will have a chance to network over hors d’oeuvres during the reception hour. Then, Steven Ryan will lead the presentation as he speaks to VSA’s history, the evolution of their organization, and the underlying principle that has guided VSA’s work for nearly 30 years—that design can drive business results. Ryan will pull from his 17-year experience working at VSA Partners to share real-world cases.

“At VSA, we talk about powerful brands as those that are dynamic, that people believe in, and that people want to be a part of. That kind of belief in something, that desire to be a part of something, is extremely meaningful,” says Steven Ryan, Partner at VSA Partners. “In today’s interconnected world, managing one’s brand to serve that sort of role within an organization means assuring that the messages an organization sends out into the world, as well as how it chooses to behave, have to be both authentic and consistent. Brands, today, are more than simply ‘marks’ that identify products or companies. They are icons that we, as consumers, embody with ideas like purpose, values, and character. These are much more powerful notions to tap into.”
At VSA Steven Ryan has led teams servicing accounts for clients such as IBM, Motorola, Sony, and Converse. VSA Partners is a brand firm headquartered in Chicago—with locations in New York and Minneapolis—helping clients build and manage high-performance, multi-dimensional brands.

AAF Miami (American Advertising Federation – Miami), formerly Advertising Federation of Greater Miami, founded in 1924 is a professional trade organization fostering higher advertising industry standards in the community. It is one of the oldest continuing professional organizations in both Miami and the United States. With over 200 members representing all areas of the advertising profession, AAF Miami provides ongoing education through monthly events and scholarships and supports the community through public service programs. To learn more about the organization visit www.adfedmiami.com.

About Steven P. Ryan, Principal, VSA Partners, Inc. Steven joined VSA Partners in 1995 since which time he has lent his design and leadership skills to nearly every facet of the organization. An accomplished creative director, he has led VSA design teams on projects for clients such as Coca-Cola, Compaq Computers, Converse, First Data, IBM, Interface, Mohawk Papers Mills, Motorola, Nortel Networks. With expertise in branding, stakeholder communications, retail strategy and design, and interactive applications Steven brings a broad understanding of branding to both business interactions as well as creating end-user value. During his nearly 15 years with VSA, his work has been recognized by numerous publications and trade organizations including The Arc Awards, Communication Arts, Critique, Graphis, How, Print, AR 100, and the Type Director’s Club.

Steven holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and was a participant in the 2005 AIGA/Harvard Business School Business Perspectives for Design Leaders. In addition to his leadership role at VSA, Steven was Vice President of the Chicago Chapter of AIGA from 2007 through 2008, and President from 2009 through 2010.

Otto is pioneering a movement to inspire self-confidence around the globe with her national “Change My World Now Initiative,” making a stop at Dadeland Mall Saturday, November 12th.

“Dadeland Mall is proud to host the “Change My World Now Initiative”. The message Otto’s Cassandra’s Angel sends is crucial for children of all ages in our community,” said Humberto Maldonado, director of marketing and business development for Dadeland Mall. “It is amazing to see how kids can still be inspired by reading, and we are glad Dadeland will be able to bring this initiative to our community of families.”

What began as a children’s book has since evolved into a global movement, including a musical set to be on Broadway in 2012. The national “Change My World Now Initiative” is a unique blend of entertainment and activism, and infuses award-winning literature with catchy tunes to inspire kids. In an era where children suffer from low self-esteem, Otto will hit 20 markets (schools and malls) as part of her effort to help children of all ages cultivate a better sense of confidence.

Children and their families will have the opportunity to become empowered at one of two 45 minute shows in the Saks Fifth Avenue corridor of Dadeland Mall. The first show will start at 1:00 p.m. followed by a second show at 3:00 p.m. The event will kick off with an intro from a musical cast member, followed by an inspiring speech given by Otto, a fun video, songs performed by seven members of the cast, culminating with a meet and greet with the cast and author.

Sean Erwin Lecture Clay as a Means to an End 10/12/11

Lecture
Friday, October 21st, 7PM
UM Lowe Art Museum
1301 Stanford Drive
Coral Gables, FL
Free and open to the public.

Sean Erwin received his MFA from the University of South Florida in 2008 and his BFA in studio art from Stetson University, DeLand, Florida in 2004. His most recent exhibitions include the 2009 NCECA Biennial and a solo-exhibition at the Atlantic Center for the Arts, Harris House Gallery. His work questions the validity of behavioral expectations prescribed by social norms and employs humor in an attempt to reinvent these expectations within the timeless medium of ceramic sculpture. Most recently he was awarded the Bray Lilian Fellowship for 2009–2010.

“My work challenges the viewer to explore their imagination while at the same time presents an awkward familiarity through the possibility of shared experiences. The work inevitably attempts at understanding the reflexive and sometimes mechanical behavior of the human subconscious.” http://seanerwin.com/home.html

Yves Saint Laurent, Classicism And Transgression at Alliance française 10/28/11

Lecture in French and English

Join us to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Yves Saint Laurent’s Fashion House.
For this event Laurent Cotta art historian fashion historian and responsible for contemporary creation at Galliera, the museum of fashion in the city of Paris offers to give us a lecture about the story of the YSL Fashion House.

Towards the end of his life, Yves Saint Laurent defined himself as “the last great couturier” – perhaps a way to settle scores with his long-time rival, Karl Lagerfeld. Pride, lucidity…? Before the end of his career in 2002, he was certainly the last active couturier to have lived through the period of glory of Parisian design in the 1950s. He was also the only one to have been able to maintain the same number of design studios and employees as in the hey-day of the ‘50s throughout his entire career.

YSL, classicisme et transgression
Recognized by Chanel as her heir, taking after a classicism inscribed in the French tradition, he offered an understated fashion which glorified the woman, gave her the assurance that she needed to assert herself in this transitional period.

He was the first to introduce street fashion into haute couture. It was this audacity that catapulted him to the head of Dior in 1960, with the “Beatnik” collection.
Although he was the champion of haute couture, he nevertheless designed a ready-to-wear line, Rive Gauche, in 1966, also signing all of his designs.

From the start of his career, he rendered the concept of “Parisian elegance” obsolete, and replaced it by the idea of “seduction” which was more in line with the aspirations of women at the dawn of the 1960s. This form of seduction was all the more disconcerting in that he deliberately conceived of it as poisonous, as witnessed by his 1971 collection, inspired by the 1940s or Catherine Deneuve’s outfits in Belle de jour by Bunuel in 1967.

Through his classics – the safari jacket, the tuxedo, see-through clothes – he accompanied women in their emancipation and fashioned a clothes-closet that is contemporary even to this day.

Laurent Cotta
Since 2002, art historian and fashion historian, Laurent Cotta, has been responsible for contemporary creation at Galliera, the museum of fashion in the city of Paris. In his time at the museum, Laurent Cotta has had the chance to mount a number of exhibitions paying homage to the great names in fashion, or launching young talent from the new generation of designers. His first exhibit – Fashion to Follow – presented the work of young, emerging international designers.

In 2004, he was the commissioner of Sylvie Vartan, Fashion Review, devoted to the singer’s stage costumes. In 2007, he mounted the exhibition Gallierock, Jean-Charles de Castelbajac, on the occasion of which the designer took over the museum for the fortieth anniversary of the creation of his label. In 2011, as part of the exhibitions “Galliera Off-Site”, he and Olivier Saillard were co-commissioners for Madame Grès, Fashion Design at Work at the Bourdelle Museum, from March through July, and The 18th Century in Contemporary Fashion at the Grand Trianon Museum, on the grounds of Versailles, from July through September.

In addition to his projects at Galliera, Laurent Cotta has been regularly lecturing at l’École du Louvre since 2004, and in 2010 was responsible for a series of courses devoted to the history of contemporary fashion. At the same time, he gives lectures on Yves Saint Laurent at the Institut Français de la Mode [French Fashion Institute]. Laurent Cotta also contributes to print media and particularly with Nippon Vogue. He has of late been working with the Franco-German television channel Arte, participating recently on two documentaries which are scheduled for broadcast in 2011: The History of Pants and the Mini-Skirt and The Mini-Skirt.

French and Americans will go to the polls to elect their next respective presidents. In both countries, the past presidents are candidates for succession and the similarities do not end there. For the first time, the French Socialist Party decide to hold primaries, an American-inspired idea. However, in both countries the surprises could come from the right: the voters of the FN in France and supporters of the Tea Party in the United States.

Legal Issues for the Contemporary Artist 10/22/11

Legal Issues for the Contemporary Artist
Presented by Lawyer Sergio Muñoz Sarmiento, Esq.
Saturday, October 22, 2011, 9: 00 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.
ArtServe, Inc.
1350 sunrise Blvd.
Fort Lauderdale

Broward County Commission’s Cultural Division, ArtServe, Inc., and the South Florida Artists Association will present Legal Issues for the Contemporary Artist with the Associate Director of Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts, Sergio Muñoz Sarmiento, Esq. This is a unique set of training sessions to assist individual artists working in all disciplines.

The half-day seminar for arts professionals will cover the legal and business issues that affect individual artists and professionals within arts and cultural organizations. This is a course for artists of all disciplines, including visual artists, performance artists, writers, fashion designers, filmmakers, musicians, web designers, and anyone working in interactive media. Also, cultural organizations, recently admitted attorneys and other professionals who represent artists, should also benefit from this program.

“Legal issues can be overwhelming for many visual and performing artists: relationships with galleries, appropriation practices, damaged artwork, art world employment practices, fundraising for projects, and collaborations with other artists are just some of the issues visual artists face,” says Sarmiento. With this in mind, Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts has structured a half-day workshop for contemporary artists that will make legalese comprehensible and manageable, while giving visual artists an introduction to legal issues necessary to protect themselves and their art projects. This half-day workshop will cover intellectual property (copyright and trademarks); contracts and consignment agreements; basic business models (non-profit and for-profit corporations, LLC’s, fiscal sponsorships); employment issues with studio and gallery assistants; artist websites.

Sergio Muñoz Sarmiento, Esq., is currently the Associate Director for Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts in New York City, where he advises and represents visual and performing artists and arts organizations. He received his BA in Art from the University of Texas-El Paso, and an MFA in Art from The California Institute of the Arts. In 1997 he was a Van Lier Fellow at the Whitney Museum’s Independent Study Program in Studio Art, and received his J.D. from Cornell Law School. He is an Adjunct Professor of art law at Fordham Law School, and is also the Program Director and faculty of VLA’s Art & Law Residency Program. His legal experience includes advising artists, galleries, and arts organizations on matters involving copyright, trademarks, moral rights, free speech, and artist-gallery disputes. He has recently worked on an important appeal under the Visual Artists Rights Act of 1990 on behalf of the Swiss installation artist Christoph Büchel in the artist’s highly-publicized dispute with the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art.

At a time when issues of form have been de-emphasized because of the postmodern emphasis on open-ended readings, form continues to be important. The lecture will look in particular at Kant’s, Mallarme’s, and the Russian Formalists’ uses of form and demonstrate why they continue to be timely.

Art historian Dr. Robert Hobbs has held the Rhoda Thalhimer Endowed Chair at Virginia Commonwealth University since 1991 and has been a visiting professor at Yale University since 2004. Before coming to VCU, he served as a lecturer at Yale and an associate professor at Cornell University.

Hobbs specializes in both late modern and post-modern art. His work joins social history with literary criticism and aesthetics; it also relies on feminist and postcolonial theory. He has published widely and has curated dozens of exhibitions, many of which have been shown at important institutions in the U.S. and abroad. His specific research areas span the twentieth- and twentieth-first centuries, and his publications include monographs on Milton Avery, Alice Aycock, Edward Hopper, Lee Krasner, Mark Lombardi, Robert Smithson, and Kara Walker. In addition he has written on such mainstream modern and post-modern artists as Hernan Bas, Duane Hanson, Keith Haring, Jonathan Lasker, Mark Lindquist, Malcolm Morley, Robert Motherwell, Beverly Pepper, Richard Pousette-Dart, Neo Rauch, Andres Serrano, Yinka Shonibare, James Siena, Meredyth Sparks, Frank Stella, Frank Thiel, Kelley Walker, John Wesley, and Kehinde Wiley, among others. His published research also includes in-depth studies of regional, self-taught, African-American, and American Indian artists, as well as investigations of contemporary craft media.

The Literary Vision Of Jean Anouilh Throughout His Books Lecture 9/23/11

Lecture by Dr. Efrin Knight

Lecture in French by Efrin Knight, Doctor of the Sorbonne University, currently teaching French at FIU-BBC, followed by a book signature
Free and open to the public

Ever since men started writing, many of them have felt the need to expose their point of view about the subject. But this was generally reserved to prefaces or dedications. However, Jean Anouilh distinguishes from his predecessors in several ways. Unlike his masters, he does not write prefaces because he does not like them. Similarly, he does not write technical exposés.

Nevertheless, whether he treats a mythological, religious or historical subject; whether he writes about an impossible love (one of his favorite themes); whatever the argument, he always finds the way to refer in his works to an author of the past, a colleague of his time and, most of all, to the theater world, that he exposes in detail.

On the other hand, we find in his plays a plethora of historic figures ranging from Cato the Elder and Aliénor d’Aquitaine to Général De Gaulle including Bayard, Bismarck, Kissinger, Beethoven or Mignard.

Here we are quite far from the superficial boulevardier pretending to have no other goal than to amuse us and make us forget our sorrows.
EFRIN KNIGHT: Born in Havana June 18, 1943, of British origin on his father’s side and Spanish on his mother’s side, Efrin Knight arrived in Paris in 1963, where he celebrated his twentieth birthday. After learning French at the Alliance française de Paris between 1963 and 1964, he began studying at the Sorbonne, where he followed a double course during twelve years. In history, and in French literature, that he completed with the grade of Docteur de l’Université de Paris-Sorbonne (Paris IV). His dissertation titled Critique et vision littéraires dans le théâtre de Jean Anouilh, was agreed with Mention Très Honorable.

Licencié ès lettres in 1968, he then started to teach french in France as a foreigner.

After teaching french to French native students during thirty five years, he retired in December 2003 at the legal age of sixty and moved to join his family in Miami Beach.

Five months after he arrived in Florida, he was hired as an adjunct professor to teach french for free (or almost…) at the Florida International University in Miami in May 2004 and he is still a member of that faculty at the moment of his last publication in July 2011.

In March 2000, his annotated anthology of articles and prefaces of Jean Anouilh was published in Paris by La Table Ronde under the title En Marge du théâtre. He has also published several texts in french about the famous playright in the Revue d’histoire du théâtre since 1997. His last article, titled: L « Histoire de Monsieur Mauvette et la fin du monde » et la dislocation de la chronologie dans le théâtre de Jean Anouilh was published by this academic review in October 2010.

His photographs are also used from time to time since 1980 to illustrate book covers, schoolbooks, and postcards.

South Beach: Stories Of A Renaissance

Book Presentation by author Charles Kropke moderated by Journalist Veronika Pozmentier with a book signing session – In English – Open to the Public- Free admission

The comeback of South Beach in Miami Beach is one of the most interesting urban and cultural revivals of a city in modern American History. South Beach: Stories of A Renaissance captures the individual accounts of economic, cultural and political renewal that has created the dynamic international resort influenced by French Art Deco that is today’s South Beach.

The book explores the history of South Point, Ocean Drive, Lincoln Road, Espanola Way and other neighborhoods, tying the present and the past of this piece of paradise with the vision of preservationists who saved the Art Deco district influenced by the Paris 1925 Exposition Internationale.

In a conversation to present the book its author Charles Kropke and Veronika Pozmentier Art Deco specialist will captivate the audience with the most intriguing stories about South Beach, stories mixed with over four dozen personal interviews with influential leaders of the Art Deco district.

A masterful addition to the existing literature of Florida history lavishly illustrated with 150 full color images including 4 double page gatefolds the book is a bestseller with more than 5000 books sold as today.

Charles J. Kropke is an adventurer, environmentalist, speaker, and author and has been an entrepreneur his whole life. A leader in educational, ecological, historic, and cultural tours in Florida and the Caribbean basin is the founder of the eco-tourism tour company Dragonfly Expeditions providing environmentally responsible “green” travel and tour combined with the culture, history and people of the destination plus a healthy dose of adventure.

Public Lecture: Author and photography critic Vicki Goldberg will give a lecture entitled “What Remains”.

Focus Gallery: Joel Meyerowitz – Aftermath
In commemoration of the 10th anniversary of 9/11, Miami Art Museum presents “Focus Gallery: Joel Meyerowitz – Aftermath,” an exhibition of photographs taken by the only photographer granted right of entry into Ground Zero after the September 11, 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City. For nine months during the day and night, Meyerowitz photographed “the pile,” as the World Trade Center came to be known, and the over 800 people a day that were working in it. The exhibition consists of 24, recently-donated photographs, presented in the Focus Gallery section of the Museum’s Permanent Collection installation.

“I was making photographs for everyone who didn’t have access to the site,” says Meyerowitz, “I wanted to communicate what it felt like to be in there as well as what it looked like: to show the pile’s incredible intricacy and visceral power. I could provide a window for everyone else who wanted to be there, too, to help, or to grieve, or simply to try to understand what had happened to our city.”

About the experience, Meyerowitz has written, “The nine months I worked at Ground Zero were among the most rewarding of my life. I came in as an outsider, a witness bent on keeping the record, but over time I began to feel a part of the very project I’d been intent on recording… the intense camaraderie I experienced at Ground Zero inspired me, changing both my sense of myself and my sense of responsibility to the world around me. September 11th was a tragedy of almost unfathomable proportions. But living for nine months in the midst of those individuals who faced that tragedy head-on, day after day, and did what they could to set things right, was an immense privilege.”

The photographs in MAM’s collection are from a unique set of contact prints (photographs printed on a 1:1 scale from the negatives) issued by the artist in 2006. As a group, they span the entire nine month period that Meyerowitz was on site, presenting a poignant, condensed view of the clean up effort, including portraits of the workers involved. The set is introduced by a single image of the World Trade Center towers taken by the artist in the 1980s from his apartment window.

The entire set of more than 8,000 photographs taken by Meyerowitz form an archive at the Museum of the City of New York. The Aftermath series was the focus of a 2006 book, Aftermath: World Trade Center Archives published by Phaidon (reissued this year in a special 10th anniversary edition) and an exhibition organized by the US Department of State that traveled worldwide from 2002 to 2005.

In a global society where languages float across borders, race and class, we have become a nation of polyglot people. At the University of Miami our student body represents 146 nations and it is common to walk across the campus and hear conversations in more than two or three languages. Not unusual when you consider that the U.S. Census Bureau has determined that the number of people speaking a language other than English at home has doubled in the last three decades. The Creative Writing Department’s reading series, Polyglot Writers: Writing Across Languages explores the fluidity of words as they define and redesign the narratives of writers who come from multiple languages, cultures and traditions.

This year, we have also partnered with Books & Books to host writers’ salons. Join us as we engage in fine desserts, after dinner drinks, and conversations that focus on the play of language in all its forms.

We will kick off the series Tuesday, September 6, and Wednesday, September 7, with UM visiting professors, Cristina García and John Murillo.

García is the author of five novels including Dreaming in Cuban, The Agüero Sisters, Monkey Hunting, A Handbook to Luck, and The Lady Matador’s Hotel. Her work has been nominated for a National Book Award and has been translated into fourteen languages. She is the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship, a Whiting Writers’ Award, a Hodder Fellowship at Princeton University, and an NEA grant.

John Murillo is the author of the poetry collection, Up Jump the Boogie. He has received fellowships from Cave Canem, the New York Times, the Wisconsin Institute of Creative Writing, and the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown, Massachusetts. His work has appeared in such publications as Callaloo, Court Green, Ninth Letter, and Ploughshares, and is forthcoming in Angles of Ascent: A Norton Anthology of African-American Poetry.

Other authors in the “Polyglot Writers” Reading Series include Susana Chávez-Silverman, Nathalie Handal, Ishion Hutchinson, and Bino A. Realuyo.

“Polyglot Writers” Reading Series is sponsored by the University of Miami’s Creative Writing Program, Department of English, College of Arts and Sciences, American Studies Program, Women’s and Gender Studies Program, Department of Modern Languages and Literatures’ Joseph Carter Memorial Fund, Multicultural Student Affairs, and our partners at Books & Books.

Variable Discourse – Absenteeism A Conversation Between Claire Breukel And Magnus Sigurdarson 8/3/11

Variable Discourse – Absenteeism A Conversation Between Claire Breukel And Magnus Sigurdarson

Miami, Florida 33137

Please join us for a conversation between Claire Breukel and Magnus Sigurdarson at Dimensions Variable. They will be discussing some of the ideas behind Sigurdarson’s Absenteesim currently on view at DV, as well as the artist’s practice.

Absenteeism is a habitual pattern of absence from a duty or obligation. Traditionally, it has been viewed as an indicator of poor individual performance, as well as a breach of an implicit contract between employee and employer; it was seen as a management problem, and framed in economic or quasi-economic terms. More recent scholarship seeks to understand absenteeism as an indicator of psychological, medical, or social adjustment to work.

In his exhibition, Sigurdarson is approaching the exhibition space as a blank entity; furthermore, he is framing the space, covering it with structures that are regarded as support for the very basis of art expression. He has collected the frames over a long time and they have been waiting to be given a purpose. Some are reclaimed, found or made by hand, but they will all be altered to fit the dimensions of the room.

He is allowing his practice to be determined by the demands of the space and shifting his attention to the structures that support “the work.” By doing so, he’s making a choice to explore the disconnect between his work and the self that exists independent of the work. This process has brought him to the realization that the absence of his work is the work, thus embracing the idea of absenteeism as a new state of working.

Magnus Sigurdarson was born in Reykjavik, Iceland, in 1966 and currently livesand works in Miami, Florida. He attended The Icelandic College of Arts and Crafts, Reykjavik, Iceland (1992, BFA in Mixed Media) and Mason Gross School of the Arts, Rutgers University, New Brunswick, New Jersey (1997, MFA). He is a Fulbright Scholarship Recipient with multiple grants and awards on his Resume. His work are included in the collections of Debra and Dennis Scholl, Miami Beach; Alberto Chebebar, Miami Beach; Collezione La Gaia, Busca, Italy, MDD – Museum Dhondt – Dhaenes, Gent, Belgium; The Icelandic National Gallery, Reykjavik; The Reykjavik Municipal Museum, Reykjavik; The Related Group, Miami and The Private Collection of Emmanuel Javogue, Miami. Magnus Sigurdarson is represented by the Dorsch Gallery, Miami.

Claire Breukel is an independent curator and arts writer interested in contemporary art that falls outside of conventional modes of exhibition. Her previous work experience includes working as Curator for Sportlifestyle company PUMA as well as Director of Locust Projects. She is currently a Creative consultant for the Miami DDA and lives and works between Miami and NY where she will be attending Hunter college this fall.

Downtown Miami Hosts Mayoral Debate 6/22/11 – This has been CANCELED.

Downtown Votes! Downtown Miami Hosts Mayoral Debate
Candidates to Face-Off on Issues Critical to Growing Downtown Community
Wednesday June 22, 5:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.
Gusman Center for the Performing Arts
174 E. Flagler Street
Miami

This Event Is Free And Open To The Public

As a kick-off of the Miami Downtown Development Authority’s Downtown Votes! campaign to encourage voter registration amongst new residents, the agency will partner with Miami Dade College and the Gusman Center for the Performing Arts to host a special debate between mayoral candidates, former Hialeah Mayor Julio Robaina and former Miami-Dade County Commissioner Carlos Gimenez, in advance of the June 28 run-off election.

At the event moderated by Michael Putney, the host of “This Week in South Florida” on WPLG, downtown constituents will have the opportunity to ask questions of both candidates regarding their plans to support continued growth and development within Miami’s urban core. City of Miami Mayor Tomas Regalado will also be in attendance and will provide a few brief remarks prior to the commencement of the debate.

More than 80 residential condo buildings were erected in downtown Miami during the boom, injecting new life into the district and forever changing the City’s skyline. Out of the ashes of the boom-turned-bust, a 24-7 community has emerged with more than 70,000 new residents now calling downtown Miami home.

And more residents mean more voters: since 2003, Downtown Miami’s registered voter population has surged 184% — giving a much needed voice to the County’s largest employment center and economic hub.

Leading South Florida Technology Executives To Discuss Practical Applications
Of Cloud Computing For Legal, Financial And Other Professional-Services Firms

Miami Finance Forum’s CEO Power Breakfast and Discussion Moderated by Kaufman, Rossin & Co., Features Speakers from Terremark, CareCloud, Compuquip Technologies and ICG

The Miami Finance Forum (MFF) will serve as host to a “CEO Power Breakfast” and panel discussion titled, “Breakfast in the Cloud: What You Need to Know about Cloud Computing.” The panel, moderated by Jorge Rey of Kaufman, Rossin & Co., will seek to demystify cloud computing and answer the main question on the minds of legal, finance and other professionals: “What exactly do ‘I’ need to know about cloud computing, and how can it support my business goals?” Unlike other panels that have covered cloud in broad, technical terms, this high-level discussion will provide practical strategies and tactics to leverage cloud services to benefit businesses. The event takes place at 7:30 a.m. Thursday, June 9, at The Bankers Club, 2 South Biscayne Blvd., Miami, FL 33131.

At the event, industry leaders will take a narrow approach to discuss and reveal practices that specifically relate to South Florida businesses in the professional-services industries. In addition, panelists will explore ways that cloud services can reduce a company’s IT expenses, enhance computing power, leverage software as a service (SaaS) applications and protect critical data.

Panel speakers include Marvin Wheeler, chief strategy officer with Terremark Worldwide, the operator of the Network Access Point (NAP) of the Americas, the only facility of its kind specifically designed to link Latin America with the rest of the world. The NAP of the Americas was sold to Verizon last month for approximately $1.5 billion to accelerate Verizon’s cloud computing strategy. Other speakers include:
· Albert Dosal, President & CEO, Compuquip Technologies
· Ed Gross, President, ICG
· Albert Santalo, Founder, President & CEO, CareCloud

We know many artists who have been ripped off because they did not understand, or even read, the contracts they signed. Do not lose your art! This is a serious issue and one we are going to tackle for this seminar. Mr. Wells is going to break it down and give you some simple examples of how you can protect yourself. Mr. Wells understands these issues very well, being both a lawyer and an artist. Please bring any other legal questions you may have and we will try to cover as many as possible.

Whale and Star Lecture Arshile Gorky and Abstract Expressionism 5/18/11

Whale & Star Lecture Project. Lecture 7: Arshile Gorky and Abstract Expressionism: A Contested History by Michael R. Taylor
Wednesday, May 18, 2011, 7:00 p.m.
Whale & Star
2215 NW 1st Place
Miami, Florida 33127
www.whaleandstar.com

Admission: $5 Lecture Fee / Limited seating
RSVP: 305.576.6160

This lecture will explore Arshile Gorky’s complex and often misunderstood relationship with the Abstract Expressionist movement. The initial reception of Gorky’s work after his death in 1948 paved the way for his gradual assimilation into the canon of Abstract Expressionism as it was formed in the 1950s by, among others, Clement Greenberg, Harold Rosenberg, Thomas Hess, Sam Hunter, and Dore Ashton. Gorky’s work was acclaimed by these critics and art historians as an important precursor to the large-scale abstract paintings of his friends and colleagues, such as Willem de Kooning, Jackson Pollock, and Mark Rothko. Although universally accepted at the time, this reading of Gorky’s work has been contested in recent years, since it deliberately downplays the artist’s longstanding allegiance to Surrealism during his lifetime, leading to a fundamental misreading of his work and its meaning.

Michael R. Taylor is the Muriel and Philip Berman Curator of Modern Art at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. His most recent exhibitions at the Museum include Picasso and the Avant-Garde in Paris (2010); Marcel Duchamp: Etant donn’s (2009); Arshile Gorky: A Retrospective (2009); Salvador Dali: The Centennial Retrospective (2005); and Giorgio de Chirico and the Myth of Ariadne (2002). Dr. Taylor studied at the Courtauld Institute of Art in London, where he wrote a masters thesis on Richard Hamilton and a doctoral dissertation on Marcel Duchamp’s readymades. He has published widely on Duchamp, Dada, and Surrealism. In 2009 he co-curated with Carlos Basualdo the Bruce Nauman exhibition at the American Pavilion for the 53rd Venice Biennale (winner of the Golden Lion award for best national pavilion). Future projects include an exhibition on Surrealism in the 1940s that focuses on myth, magic, and eroticism. In 2010 Dr. Taylor’s book Marcel Duchamp: Etan t donnis won the George Wittenborn Prize for outstanding research and scholarship in the field of art history.
