Those who are reptile lovers or simply want to learn more about the fascinating creatures are invited to attend Miami Science Museum’s Reptile Day on Saturday, Nov. 5. Merging two of the Museum’s most popular events, Snake Day and Lizard Day, Reptile Day will include entertaining and interactive activities about many different reptile species. Magical Snowfall Returns for its 9th Year at Dolphin Mall

Dolphin Mall invites South Florida families to experience its ninth annual Magical Snowfall. The free winter festivities in Miami begin at Dolphin Mall at the Ramblas Plaza on Wednesday, Nov. 23 and continue into the new year. There will be a snowfall at 7 p.m. daily and an additional snowfall at 9 p.m. every Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Beginning Monday, December 19th there will be a 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. snowfall every day until Monday, January 2, 2012. There will be no snow on Christmas Eve (Dec. 24), Christmas Day (Dec. 25), New Year’s Eve (Dec. 31), or New Year’s Day (January 1, 2012).

In true Dolphin Mall holiday tradition, magical wands will be distributed every night to children under 12 years of age when their parents sign up to receive the Dolphin Mall e-bulletin. At the strike of 7 p.m. and 9 p.m., the children will wave their wands in the air and magically the snow will return to the mall while illuminating the sky with a warm holiday glow. Youngsters can pick up their wands half an hour before each show.

The Roxy Theatre Group (RTG), a non-profit organization devoted to enriching children’s lives through the performing arts, is proud to take part in the 12th annual nationwide event, Lights On Afterschool, with both of their afterschool programs, 21st Century Community Learning Centers and The Children’s Trust Kidz on Stage. This event began as a way to promote the importance of afterschool programs and the positive effects they have on the children who attend them. Afterschool programs are formed in order to assist working families but more importantly they are to keep children in the community safe while inspiring them to learn and grow.

In the spirit of the RTG’s performing arts mission, on Thursday, October 20th, 2011, from 4PM – 6PM, at the Roxy Performing Arts Center, the organization plans to promote literacy by having their afterschool students participate in a “not-so-spooky” spooky reading of an eerie-themed one-act play entitled An Evening With Edgar Allen Poe, which includes famous works from the poet such as The Tell Tale Heart, The Fall of the House of Usher, & The Purloined Letter just to name a few . To stick with the “not-so-spooky” theme, there will be papier maché campfire logs, hearth stones and trees to complete the whole camping environment, all in the dark aided only by flashlights–the lights in “Lights On.”

“When my afterschool teachers told us we were going to be participating in this event I thought it was really cool. My favorite part is that we are going to be reading spooky plays in a spooky campfire setting,” said Annemarie Blanco, 12, student at South Miami Middle School who attends the RTG’s 21st Century Community Learning Centers afterschool program.

“The aim of the activity is to bring awareness to afterschool programs and the great strides they are making in youth academics and personal development while keeping it fun for the students,” said Charles Sothers, Theatre Director of The Roxy Theatre Group.

Kids and adults alike can explore the wonders of space for FREE at Miami Science Museum’s Fabulous First Friday events in August and September. Guests can “reach for the stars” during a free planetarium show, rooftop observatory viewing, and Activity Room for children three and older. The Falls, one of the largest open-air shopping, dining and entertainment complexes in the United States, has teamed up with South Florida Parenting to welcome back the annual “Back to School Splash.” Families can catch one more wave of summer thrills during this free event which will take place on Sat., Aug. 6 and Sun., Aug. 7 from 12 noon to 5 p.m. at The Falls.

This weekend event will feature free activities including stage entertainment, hand-on crafts, paddle boats, inflatable rides, water and fishing games and a dunk tank. The Scoop on Poop, a 5,000 square-foot traveling exhibition on what poop is and how animals and humans use it, opens for the second time in Florida and at Zoo Miami at Dr. Wilde’s World on January 22nd. The exhibition, based on the popular book with the same name by Dr. Wayne Lynch, treats the subject with a tactful blend of facts and fun with large colorful graphic panels, three dimensional models and interactive components. As the largest exhibition ever mounted on the science of what animals leave behind, it will open to the public everyday from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm.

Fish do it, frogs do it, pythons, birds and elephants do it, yet poop is one of those subjects people find difficult to talk about with a straight face. Kids, however, are positively fascinated by it, and poop is actually an interesting topic. Animals use poop to build homes, hide from enemies, attract mates, send messages, and cool off – some even eat it. Veterinarians, farmers, naturalists, paleontologists, Maasai tribesmen and power companies also use it. Poop is a scientific puzzle, that with a little detective work, can lead to important information about an animal.

“Kids and adults alike will learn a great deal and definitely get a good laugh from The Scoop on Poop exhibit. This subject can sometimes be a little ‘stinky’ to discuss, but the creators of this exhibit have done it very well,” said Cristina Heredia, Zoo Miami Exhibits Manager.

The Scoop on Poop, which made its FL debut fall of 2006 at Zoo Miami, invites visitors to listen in on an animal’s digestive system, learn the language of poop in countries around the world, examine fecal samples in a veterinarian’s lab, compete in dung beetle races, track wild animals by clues left in scat, see how long it takes an elephant to poop their body weight, improve their “number 2” IQ in stool school, and meet a dinosaur dung detective.

“We think kids will be excited to see this exhibit. They’re curious over subjects that are a little gross and not regularly discussed,” said Cristina Heredia, Zoo Miami Exhibits Manager.

The Scoop on Poop was created by the exhibits department of Clyde Peeling’s Reptiland in Allenwood, Pennsylvania, a zoological institution accredited by the American Zoo and Aquarium Association like Zoo Miami. Design and construction of the exhibition took over three years. Once the exhibit closes at Zoo Miami on May 8, 2011, its next stop will be the Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium in Tacoma, WA.

Enjoy the best spring break week ever discovering the wonders of wildlife at Zoo Camp. Your days will be filled with exciting animal encounters, presentations with skulls and skins, visits to exhibits, meeting with Zookeepers, and much more!

Morning and afternoon snacks provided.
Campers must bring their own lunches with beverages from home.
Drop off and Extended Care:
Morning drop-off: 8:30- 8:50 A.M. Camp starts promptly @ 9:00 A.M.!
Extended care: 4:30 P.M. – 5:30 P.M. Cost: $35 for the week per child.
Registration: Pre-registration is required and space is limited.
$5 discount for siblings.
Registration is processed on a first come, first served basis, and are due by noon on Wednesday, March 9th. A $10 late fee per child will be assessed after that.
Groups are arranged by age, at camp staff discretion.
Completed registration and medical information forms must be submitted with payment by fax or mail.

Cancellations and Refunds
Refunds may be requested until March 8th, 3:00 P.M. and are subject to a $20 cancellation fee per child. After that, no credits or refunds will be issued.

You will have a great time at Zoo Camp finding out how some animals utilize a variety of nature’s construction materials to build amazing homes for them and their young. You will also have a lot of fun with your friends making a cozy animal house from recycled materials!

Did You Know?
When it rains chimpanzees use broad leaves as umbrellas. Crocodiles on the other hand, can cry real tears! There is even an animal that can see if it’s day or night by using its tail! Can you tell what animal is that? Fun animal facts such as these and many others are the theme of this exciting day at Zoo Camp.

Opposite Day
Join us to explore an incredible array of opposites in the animal world. You will find the fastest and the slowest, heaviest and the lightest, the largest and the smallest animals at the zoo, if you look for them really well during this opposite scavenger hunt day.

Where Does the Cookie Go?
We all know that cookies are yummy, but where do they go after we eat them? Do bears or chimpanzees like the same foods that you do? What happens to their treats after they eat them? Finding out about these and other curious food facts will be the perfect ingredients for a super fun day at Zoo Camp!

A Reason for Helping Animals
You will agree that animals and natural areas must be protected from extinction, but can you think of some reasons for doing so? Should we also help animals that may sting and scratch as well as harmless ones? You will have the best time at the Zoo with your friends, discovering the purpose for creatures and habitats. Book Blast event to kick-off statewide book drive to benefit local charity and features interactive story telling, arts and crafts, “Find A Book, Florida!” element and more

The Falls welcomes children of all ages to celebrate the joys of reading at the Simon Kidgits Club’s “Book Blast” event. Event attendees will enjoy an afternoon of engaging reading activities including interactive story telling by popular children’s author, Lisa McCourt, author of “I Love You, Stinky Face” arts and crafts to help bring to life children’s stories and celebrate the joy of reading and more. Copies of “I Love You, Stinky Face” will be available for purchase onsite at Sparkle Plenty, with a portion of the proceeds to benefit Just Read, Florida! In addition, participants will also have the opportunity to use Apple iPads to explore the Florida Department of Education’s “Find a Book, Florida,” tool that will help attendees locate new and intriguing books tailored to their own reading interests based upon the attendee’s reading ability.

In collaboration with the Florida Department of Education, a two-week book drive will commence at The Falls’ “Book Blast” event. Families are encouraged to donate new and gently-used books at Guest Services beginning Sat., Feb. 12 through Sun., Feb. 27. The books will support the goals of The Florida Department of Education’s “Just Read, Florida!” initiative and will be distributed to local area programs and schools.
