History Fort Lauderdale, proud steward of our community’s past by making our heritage accessible and engaging to residents and visitors, will take part in Smithsonian magazine’s Museum Day on Saturday, September 21. Museum Day is an annual celebration of boundless curiosity hosted by Smithsonian magazine. Participating museums and cultural institutions across the country provide free entry to anyone presenting a Museum Day ticket.

This year’s Museum Day participants at History Fort Lauderdale can view “The Art of Tim Forman: Landscape Paintings” currently on display plus explore the city’s rich past that is housed in historic buildings on a lushly landscaped campus – the History Museum of Fort Lauderdale situated in the 1905 New River Inn, the 1907 Pioneer House Museum, the 1899 Ivy Cromartie Schoolhouse Museum and the Hoch Research Library, South Florida’s foremost history center housing print resources and newspapers from 1910 – present plus 400,000 archival photos, 2,500 maps and 5,000 architectural blueprints.

Local nonprofit organization The Women’s Breast & Heart Initiative is partnering once again with Aventura Mall to hold its third annual “Pink Walk.” This year’s event will take place on Sunday, Sept. 29 in Aventura Mall’s Center Court. Participants can enjoy either the two-mile Pink Walk or the new Stroller Stroll, which was created with parents of young children in mind. The walk will remain on the same floor of the mall throughout its duration.

Miami Seaquarium is offering free admission to kids to experience the park’s Super Splashtacular Summer along with the Savage Ancient Seas exhibit. The limited-time Savage Ancient Seas exhibit has only seven weeks left at the park. This exhibit transports guests to a North America of 70 million years ago, where visitors can experience enormous, vicious sea monsters of the Cretaceous Period. The exhibit includes more than 50 prehistoric marine fossils, both cast and real specimens, mounted in extraordinary three-dimensional displays. Set under the shade of historic live oaks, the Marketplace will feature more than 52 vendors offering a selection of original art, antiques, furnishings, collectables, clothing, jewelry, luxury bath fixtures and more. Vendors will also showcase specialty plants including orchids and succulents plus pet supplies, organic food and natural health and beauty products. Gourmet bites and beverages will be available to purchase onsite. Live music and a tattoo artist will add another artistic dimension to this community event.

Visitors to Miami Seaquarium can go back in time and deep under sea, or at least feel that way. Savage Ancient Seas, opening March 8, 2019, will transport guests to a North America of 70 million years ago, when the last of the great dinosaurs roamed the Earth and a shallow sea spread across the middle of the continent. It is the spectacular, strange creatures of this sea; giant reptiles, fish, squid, and clams; that are the subject of this exciting exhibition.
In partnership with Triebold Paleontology, Inc., Miami Seaquarium has developed an ancient underwater environment where visitors can experience enormous, vicious sea monsters of the Cretaceous Period. The exhibition includes more than 50 prehistoric marine fossils, both cast and real specimens, mounted in extraordinary three-dimensional displays. The skeletons are mounted dramatically, many suspended from the ceiling above, immersing visitors inside an ancient aquarium of sorts.
The creatures on exhibit include: several mosasaurs (marine lizards which only lived during the Late Cretaceous), including the 45-foot long Bunker Tylosaurus, the largest mosasaur ever discovered in North America; a school of Pachyrhizodus, vicious fish nearly 6 feet long; and Archelon, which with a 17-foot flipper-span is the largest turtle of any kind ever discovered.
Sampling the educational kiosks stationed throughout the exhibition, visitors can learn the story of how these creatures lived, and how most of them appear to have become extinct, along with the dinosaurs. Visitors can also learn how the animals sank to the bottom of the sea when they died, where they were buried in chalky layers of sediment to eventually fossilize.

Never fear parents! Jungle Island is here. South Florida’s iconic eco-adventure destination is back with the all-new, exciting Adventure Camp, designed to keep kids’ ages 5 to 12-years-old engaged and thoroughly entertained over the long summer break. Available from June 10-August 9, Jungle Island offers week-long and full-day camps filled with educational hands-on animal encounters, arts & crafts, fitness, space exploration, and nature discovery, among other activities. Each week features a new theme, including Around the Globe in Five Days, Time Travel, Disasters on Earth, Out of This World Odyssey, and Adventure Quest.

Summer Adventure Camp is offered from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Monday through Friday at a weekly rate of $175 per week, per child, or daily for $50 per child. Go Wild VIP Kids Tours and SuperFlight experiences are available at an additional cost. Early and late care is available at an additional cost of $40 for a week or $10 for the day. Springtime brings excitement to Miami Seaquarium with the return of spring camp. Thousands of walkers and runners will make strides in the ongoing fight against drunk driving during the 9th Annual Ultimate Software presents the La Croix & Lennox National Account Services Walk Like MADD & MADD Dash Fort Lauderdale 5k brought to you by UBS on Sunday, April 28. This event is MADD Broward County’s annual signature fundraising event in support of its mission to end drunk driving. It takes place in over 90 cities in the U.S., including Fort Lauderdale.

The day’s festivities will also include children’s activities, an awards ceremony, live musical performances and vendor/educational booths. The event will be attended by local dignitaries including Founder and Volunteer Chairperson Heather Geronemus, event co-chair Rachel Perz, and honorary chairs Matthew ‘Whiz’ Buckley and Major Robert Chandler.

Since it was established in 2011, this event has raised over $1.75 million that stays in our community to save lives and support victims of drunk driving. All event proceeds benefit MADD Broward & Palm Beach’s community education, victim support services and youth programs.

“Drunk driving is 100 percent preventable and we are working to educate the community so that we can see a future with no more victims,” said Geronemus, Plantation resident and vibrant young professional at Ultimate Software who established and chaired the Fort Lauderdale event since 2011. Her late father, Dr. Robert Perry Geronemus, was struck and killed by a drunk driver in 2009. “The community has really come together over the past nine years to support MADD’s mission to end drunk driving and we are excited for another successful year of fundraising and raising awareness.”

During the kick-off event students will have the exclusive opportunity to enjoy a walking tour and receive photography tips from noted wildlife photographer, Nikon® Ambassador and Zoo Miami’s Director of Communications Ron Magill. It’s the perfect opportunity for them to capture a winning shot for the 2019 ZoolensSM contest that could earn them up to $2,000. Also new this year, students can now submit photos taken with their smartphones in addition to using traditional cameras.

Special guests Miss Florida Taylor Tyson and social media influencer Diana Pombo will also be onsite to meet and greet student participants and take photos with them. Nikon® representatives and Pitman Photo Supply will also be there providing access to loaner digital Nikon® photography equipment for up to 30 students, and offering gift cards to participants, while supplies last. last.

Manatee Lagoon – An FPL Eco-Discovery Center® is celebrating its third anniversary with ManateeFest 2019. This free, family-friendly event jump starts with a Moonlight Movies at Manatee Lagoon viewing of “Finding Nemo” on Friday, Feb. 1. Visitors are encouraged to bring blankets and lawn chairs, and food and beverage vendors will be on site. The large screen event is staged on the grassy lawn under the environmental education center’s iconic front lawn Banyan Tree.

The festivities will continue on Saturday, Feb. 2 with an action-packed day of hands-on educational and engaging activities. Saturday’s event will include photo opportunities with Mia the Manatee, an interactive selfie station, marine life face painting, art stations, local and state environmental exhibitors and much more. There will also be a passport activity, where guests are eligible to win a prize for visiting designated stations and completing the fill-in-the-blank statements in the passport.

With a variety of food trucks, arts and crafts vendors, environmental booths and live music, ManateeFest 2019 is sure to be a weekend the whole family will enjoy.

NSU Art Museum’s symposium History of Art and Hip Hop in South Florida,
coinciding with the presentation of the rap musical Hamilton at Broward Center
for the Performing Arts, explores the rich and distinct developments of this
interdisciplinary genre in the region.

Featuring artists and performers steeped in Southern hip hop, this symposium
addresses the expansion of the genre in South Florida in the 1980s with its unique
fusion of Reggae, West Indian, Latino, and African music and dance with early rap
and Miami bass, the role pirate radio and Broward-based WEDR radio played in
broadcasting this unique blend, and how it influenced the work of South Florida
artists.

Participants include artists william cordova, Luis Gispert, and Kandy Lopez, among
others. Free dance and rap workshops and demonstrations will be held prior to
the symposium for children, teens and adults.

This event takes place during NSU Art Museum’s Free First Thursday’s Starry Nights.

Santa’s Flight Academy, a one-of-a-kind, immersive experience that culminates with a special visit with Santa, will return to Dolphin Mall from November 8 through December 24. The holiday attraction merges the physical and digital to provide a personalized adventure for every child.

“The beloved tradition of visiting Santa comes to life through this unique and interactive experience only available at Dolphin Mall,” said Madelyn Bello Calvar, the shopping center’s marketing and sponsorship director. “Our goal is to make every child feel like a hero at the end of this action-packed journey, as Santa’s sleigh won’t make it around the world without their help.”

Set within the North Pole, each ‘cadet’ will receive an official flight crew badge and be instantly recognized by name upon entering Santa’s Flight Academy to become an elite member of Santa’s flight crew. From there, cadets are fitted with a virtual flight suit and will partner up with a helpful elf to inspect and power Santa’s sleigh and navigate the best course for the big day. The experience culminates with a snowfall dance party and, of course, time with Santa who will greet his crew members personally by name.

Though not required, customers are highly encouraged to create flight crew badges in advance of a visit online or through the center’s mobile app (for iPhone/Android). Badges can also be created onsite at special Santa’s Flight Academy kiosks.

Santa’s Flight Academy is free and a variety of photo packages are available for purchase, each will include a complimentary Lovepop card.

Talented kids from Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties are invited to The Galleria at Fort Lauderdale to audition for “South Florida’s Kids Got Talent,” a singing competition held as part of Tri-Rail’s “Rail Fun Day.” The competition is open to solo or group singers who are South Florida residents ages 5-17.

Each act will have a 4-minute opportunity to perform at the auditions. A panel of judges will select the acts that will compete in the final competition during Tri-Rail’s 11th Annual “Rail Fun Day,” a free family event on Saturday, January 26, 2019. Jungle Island debuts its thrilling “Hallow Fest,” a themed weekend-long adventure that is open to guests of all ages at the newly designed eco-adventure park. Filled with interactive games, haunted trails, pumpkin painting, face painting, costume contests, animal interactions and much more! It’s Miami’s best location to take a festive journey through a decorative jungle and celebrate the season with the children.
Every weekend, beginning on October 13th through October 28th, Jungle Island will bring a new adventure of engaging events and activities, scenic photo opportunities at a real pumpkin patch, a winding hay barrel maze, scarecrows, and a trick-or-treating candy trail all throughout the park. With every child admission, children will receive a free small pumpkin to decorate at the park’s pumpkin painting station, with medium and large pumpkins available for additional purchase.
Each costume contest will be held from October 26 – October 28, with a variety of exciting prizes including VIP Adventure Tours, Annual Passes, and General Admission Tickets.

In recognition of their service to our country and community, “Salute to Heroes” Week offers all veterans, police, fire, law enforcement, EMT personnel, military personnel, power and utility workers free admission to Miami Seaquarium, November 5 through the 11th. A valid military, first responder or Power & Utility Worker photo I.D. is required and must be presented at the ticket counter. All accompanying family members – up to four guests – will receive 50 percent off admission.

In addition, the park will be offering 50 percent off animal encounter programs to all military and first responders and up to four of their guests. To book an animal encounter program, please call (305) 361-5705. A valid military or first responder photo I.D. is required and must be presented upon arrival on the day of the animal encounter program.

Sunshine state residents are in for a special dolphin, seal, penguin, and reef encounter deal. Beginning August 20th through December 23, 2018, Florida residents will enjoy up to 50 percent off animal encounter programs at Miami Seaquarium. The Florida residents’ discount rate includes same day admission to the park. Proof of Florida residency and advance reservations are required. Experience firsthand the park’s unique animal encounters:

– Seal Swim – Led by the park’s marine mammal training staff, Miami Seaquarium is the only attraction in the U.S. to offer this exceptional animal encounter. Guests will experience a 15-20 minute swim with harbor seals in the park’s seal exhibit pool. Trainers will personally introduce participants to a seal and receive hugs, kisses, and take part in a fun training session with these inquisitive marine mammals. Prices as low as $75 (plus tax).

– Dolphin Odyssey– This experience includes feeding, touching and learning about these magnificent animals plus the opportunity for a deep-water interaction with a dolphin. Guests must be at least 52 inches tall to participate in the program. Prices as low as $105 (plus tax).

– Dolphin Encounter– This program allows guests to wade out into the pool and have a shallow water experience meeting the dolphins. This experience features an educational seminar and the chance to feed and touch a dolphin as well as learn about dolphin training techniques. Dolphin Encounter participants must be at least five years of age and for those children under ten years, an older sibling or adult must accompany the child as a participant. Prices as low as $75 (plus tax).

– Sea Trek Reef Encounter – An underwater helmet diving experience that allows guests to dive 15 feet below the surface of the water in the 300,000 gallon reef aquarium and be eye to eye with marine life such as colorful tropical fish, large groupers, lobsters, cownose stingrays and moray eels. Encounter can be experienced by non-divers, ages 10 and above – no certification or swimming skills are necessary. Prices as low as $79.00 (plus tax).

– Penguin Encounter – Enjoy a unique interaction with one of the world’s most beloved birds, guests can experience African Penguins in an intimate setting. Participants must be at least 52 inches tall to participate. Participants under ten who meet the height requirement must be accompanied by an adult as a participant. Participants 10-17 years of age can be accompanied by an adult as an observer. Florida resident participant rate is as low as $79 (plus tax).

The Big Give Back is a community event to support children in the arts and education and promote child safety. The purpose of the event is to provide a fun family day within the community that is focused around music, art, students preparing to return to school as well as bring light to the issues of child abduction and child bike and pedestrian safety. The goal of this event is to give out a minimum of 600 backpacks (200 elementary, 200 Junior High, 200 High School) filled with school supplies, provide children with bike safety training and safety gear and to give children in community with a love of music and art a place to express themselves in a positive and supportive environment.
