Journey to the Mediterranean at the final First Fridays beach picnic of the season. Luckily, locals only have to drive a short distance to the beautiful Town of Surfside in order to experience live Middle Eastern music, belly dancers, interactive drum circle, Dead Sea exfoliating mud scrubs and Mediterranean bites. True to Mediterranean cultures, this event is a family-affair where guests are encouraged to bring their children and enjoy Surfside’s pristine beach, in addition to loads of kid-friendly activities. At First Fridays, art aficionados also can get their dose of culture by participating in a walking tour of the InsideOut pop-up art exhibit presented by Perez Art Museum and stroll along Surfside’s beach to discover reproductions of masterpieces from PAMM’s permanent art collection by 15 renowned artists. Visitors may bring their own beach picnic supplies and beach gear. The First Fridays beach picnic is scheduled from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. on September 1, 2017 at the Oceanfront Community Center, located at 9301 Collins Avenue. Once a month the Miami Design District hosts Family Day, a program that features hands-on activities and tasks for adults and children. Catering specifically to families, the program emphasizes art, culture and education — posing as the perfect place for Sunday fun-day location after brunch or a day of early shopping. Through interactive activities, August’s MDD x ICA Family Day will teach how found objects are used to create works of art while enjoying music by DJ Angel.

These premier athletes vying to be the Miami champion are: Grave Digger driven by Tyler Menninga, Max-D driven by Colton Eichelberger, Zombie driven by Bari Musawwir, Scooby-Doo driven by Myranda Cozad, El Toro Loco driven by Kayla Blood, EarthShaker driven by Tristan England, Blue Thunder driven by Matt Cody, and Monster Mutt Rottweiler driven by JR Seasock.

Monster Jam competitors are trained at Monster Jam University in mastering the skills needed to compete in the series. Approximately 12 feet high and about 12 feet wide, Monster Jam trucks are custom-designed machines that sit atop 66-inch-tall tires and weigh a minimum of 10,000 pounds. Built for short, high-powered bursts of speed, Monster Jam trucks generate 1,500 to 2,000 horsepower and are capable of speeds of up to 100 miles per hour. Monster Jam trucks can fly up to 125 to 130 feet in distance and up to 35 feet in the air.

Surfside, Miami’s uptown beachtown, is bringing a slice of the Caribbean to locals at the next First Fridays event to be held on Friday, June 2. During this family-friendly beach picnic, locals can kickoff the weekend with a visit to Surfside’s pristine beach for a number of fun activities. Enjoy a tepee village, an interactive drum circle, a Bahamian Junkanoo marching band and a fashion showcase from Miami-based boutique BASK and designer Sonia Trussardi Sepe. Locals also can nosh on fresh ceviche and quench their thirst with coconut water courtesy of Harmless Harvest – all while basking in ocean breezes and listening to Caribbean steel drum music.

The Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA), North Miami is currently featuring the exhibition Synergism: Ekaterina and Victor Khromin through May 21, 2017. With careers that began in Soviet Russia, Ekaterina and Victor (1948-2015) developed Synergism as a new art method through a combination of traditional art methods including drawing, sculpture, painting and collage.

The Wynwood Culinary Showcase will feature top restaurants and chefs from the area providing teachable moments such as Chef Cesar Zapata from Phuc yea, who will teach us how to cook a whole fish. This year, the stage will also invite South Florida chefs outside of Wynwood who are taking the culinary scene to a higher level. Scheduled to make demos are Max Santiago, Bunnie Cakes, Crave Clean, Copper 29, and more. The Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami (MOCA) is offering a monthly series known as Creative Arts 4 Kids, which occurs the first Saturday of every month. These creative art classes are offered for kids ages 6 through 12. Each month, the class will have a different theme to help kids learn about the elements of art through painting, drawing and sculpting activities in the style of renowned artists.

For January, the theme is â€œSilhouettes,â€ inspired by Kara Walker. The activity for the children is â€œcut-out designs.â€ Parents and caregivers are encouraged to stay and create with their children.

Miami Dade College’s (MDC) historic Koubek Center, su casa de cultura, continues its bilingual family series, Playtime: DÃas de las Familias, with a grand holiday celebration, Fiesta NavideÃ±a! (Christmas Celebration) on Saturday, Dec. 17, noon – 4 p.m. This event is free and open to the public.

Fiesta NavideÃ±a features Latin Grammy-nominated Cuban producer, teacher, and voice coach Rita Rosa–renowned for her bilingual music programs–leading a sing-along called “Villancicos y Chocolate.” Other activities will include storytime with Teatro Prometeo; ornament craft-making; an elf-led Santa letter writing station; and a toy drive benefitting the local charity Amigos for Kids. Food (tamales, churros con chocolate) and drinks will be available for purchase, as will valet parking.

Playtime provides parents an engaging way for their children to learn and practice Spanish. The fun and interactive family days highlights the diverse arts, crafts, literary histories, music and dance of the city’s many Hispanic cultures. Children are invited to sing, dance, create and speak together en espaÃ±ol. The series launched with a festive bang–a Dia de los Muertos celebration, and continued with Las Aventuras del Don Quixote, presenting a children’s version of the book as well as related games and imaginative activities.
Come celebrate the holidays and indulge in delightful traditions, bilingually!

Monthly Activities En EspaÃ±ol Kick Off with a ‘Dia De Los Muertos’ Celebration!

Miami Dade College’s Koubek Center, su casa de cultura, launches its new bilingual family series, Playtime: DÃas de las Familias, from Noon – 4 p.m., on Saturday, Oct. 22, with a DÃa de Los Muertos celebration. This event is free and open to the public.

The series fills an important niche in Miami, as it provides parents an engaging (and free) way for their children to learn and practice Spanish. The fun and interactive family days will highlight the diverse arts, crafts, literary histories, and music and dance of the city’s many Hispanic cultures. Children will be invited to sing, dance, create and speak together en EspaÃ±ol.

Playtime begins with a festive bang–a Dia de los Muertos celebration. With help from The Puppet Network, Ameyal Cultural Center, and the Mexican Cultural Institute in Miami, activities will include a puppet parade; thematic face painting and craft making (skull masks and papel picado: paper decorated with cut-outs); live Mexican folkloric music and dance performances and storytelling; an ofrenda (Day of the Dead altar) exhibit; a musical instrument petting zoo and more! Mexican food will be available for purchase.

The Playtime series continues on November 12 with Aventuras de Don Quixote (Adventures of Don Quixote).

The 2016-17 Season marks a new chapter in Koubek Center’s history–one in which the venue realizes its own programming. In addition to Playtime: Dias Familiares, Koubek Center’s signature series include Little Havana Social Club, concert/dance parties in the gardens and En Residencia, an artist-in-residency initiative aligning art with activism, artist with community.

This summer, Manatee Lagoon will give kids a peek under the sea and the lagoon with marine-themed storytime every Thursday during Manatee Tales & More. Each specially selected story will teach children about ecosystems and wildlife through engaging tales about fish, clams, manatees and more. Manatee Lagoonâ€™s own Manatee Master story tellers will share various colorful stories about the aquatic species that live in the Lake Worth Lagoon.

Along with the stories, hands-on craft projects will reinforce themes learned from the books. Children ages 3 to 8, under parental supervision, are invited to learn about the Lagoon and its ecosystem through story books in this free, 30-minute session.

For its 6th consecutive year, Voices For Children will be hosting a private shopping event for over 300 Miami-Dade foster children. Since 2011, Old Navy at the Shoppes at the Dadeland Mall closes their store to public so that children have the opportunity to shop in a private, VIP type setting, for their own clothing.
