Miami Science Museum Presents Biscayne’s Underwater Secrets Photography Exhibition By Thomas Strom through 12/31/11

Miami Science Museum Presents Biscayne’s Underwater Secrets Photography Exhibition By Thomas Strom
Ongoing-December 31, 2011
Miami Science Museum
3280 South Miami Avenue
Miami, FL 33129

Ongoing Exhibition Gives Viewers a Look at the Natural Wonders in South Florida’s Own Backyard

Visitors to Miami Science Museum can get a view of the hidden natural wonders right in South Florida’s own backyard with the ongoing photography exhibition Biscayne’s Underwater Secrets by National Park Ranger Thomas Strom. The exhibition, including 23 of Strom’s photographs, explores the natural beauty of Biscayne National Park.

Strom has seen all of Biscayne National Park’s underwater nooks and crannies, and he has photographed most of them. In many cases, Strom’s pictures are the general public’s best view of the hidden beauty that makes up Biscayne National Park. Each photo in the exhibition was taken within the confines of the park itself.

“I am proud to share these portraits from where I work, and where I live,” said Strom. “I hope that they inspire people to take a closer look at the wonders in their own backyard, and hope that Biscayne’s Underwater Secrets helps them see mine.”

Strom is a former Biscayne National Park volunteer and current employee. He has captured images of the Park’s natural wonders above the water, below the water, in hidden channels and behind the scenes. He has donated 8,000 images and 800 hours to the park over the past 10 years. His abilities to convey the awesome in the ordinary, and the elegance in the extraordinary, have earned him a place as Biscayne National Park’s go-to photographer.

A self-taught photographer, Strom is a native South Floridian. After living in western Massachusetts for several years, he returned home and began volunteering at Biscayne National Park. He first served as a photographer for the park’s award-winning Family Fun Fest and renowned environmental education program, and later for all of the park’s events. His images have been featured in park brochures, on its Web site, in traveling exhibits, and many other places by such prestigious organizations as National Geographic, Nature Valley Granola Bars, the International Coral Reef Symposium and The Miami Herald.

Coral Gables Museum Inaugural Exhibits During Creating the Dream Weekend 10/20-22/11

Coral Gables Museum Inaugural Exhibits During Creating the Dream Weekend

Museum Hosts Weekend-Long Celebration, Oct. 20-22

The Coral Gables Museum will be honoring the City of Coral Gables’ historic relationship with Spain through a series of weekend events that pay tribute to George Merrick’s vision for the City Beautiful, on October 20, 21 and 22.

“The representatives from Spain were so excited to reconnect Spain to Coral Gables, where the best of Spain has been celebrated since George Merrick’s time,” said Arva Moore Parks, Acting Director of the Coral Gables Museum.

The public is invited to a grand dinner featuring the renowned chefs of the Paradores of Spain, which kicks off the festivities at The Biltmore Hotel. There will be no better place to indulge in the culinary experiences that Spain has to offer than the upcoming “Real Castles in Spain” dinner.

On Thursday, October 20th, the Museum will host the rare gastronomical event at Coral Gables’ own Giralda-inspired hotel, featuring the chefs of the Paradores, the one-of-a-kind luxury hotels located in various historic locations, including castles throughout Spain. Tickets to the “Real Castles in Spain” dinner are $250 per person. Table sponsorships are also available for $3000, including table signage and a quarter-page ad in the weekend program.

On Friday, October 21st, the Museum will honor all of the founders and sponsors who have helped bring the dream of the Coral Gables Museum to life with a special invitation-only cocktail reception. Attendees of the event will be treated to a sneak preview of the new exhibits before they open to the public as a show of gratitude for their dedication and support.

The Museum opens to the general public at 1 p.m. on Saturday, October 22.

The Coral Gables Museum celebrates the civic arts of architecture, city planning, landscape architecture, historic and environmental preservation and history—the elements that define Coral Gables. It is a true public/private partnership between the City of Coral Gables and the Coral Gables Museum Corp., a private, not for profit 501.c.3 Corporation. The Museum will open its first major exhibitions in October 2011. For more information on Coral Gables Museum, or for tickets, please visit www.coralgablesmuseum.org/ or call 305-603-8067.

Big Truck Days at MiaSci and Free Father’s Day admission 6/18-19

Miami Science Museum Celebrates Father’s Day In A Big Way and hosts Big Truck Days to launch new Moving Things exhibition
June 18 & 19th
Miami Science Museum
3280 South Miami Avenue
Miami, FL 33129.
Admission is FREE for dads on Father’s Day (Sunday, June 19th).

Miami Science Museum announces the launch of its newest exhibit: Moving Things on Saturday and Sunday, June 18-19, 2011, as part of the inaugural Big Truck Days weekend. Big Ryder and Miami-Dade County trucks, and several gourmet food trucks will be on site, as well as several hands-on activities for people of all ages to enjoy.

At Moving Things, sponsored by Ryder System, Inc., visitors will test their own brain vs. brawn in this fun hands-on exhibition focused on how things move from place to place – sometimes easily – sometimes with great effort…but always full of surprises. Moving Things will serve as a prototype exhibition for the new Miami Science Museum, scheduled to open in Museum Park in 2014 (Patricia and Phillip Frost Museum of Science).

Moving Things
Millions of trucks deliver billions of objects around the world each day. Tire changes, engine maintenance, refueling, vehicle speed, and location all need to be tracked to keep things moving smoothly. Without fleet management to coordinate all the details, deliveries would take longer, cost more, and, sometimes, not happen at all!

Visit Moving Things to experience:
Packing a Suitcase: Your bags are packed and you’re ready to go! But do you have all you need? The closer objects fit together, the more you can bring. Some shapes fit perfectly, leaving no gaps between them. Now that’s close packing!
Packing Parcels: Test how efficiently you can stow oddly shaped parts into two containers in relation to cost, volume, part orientation, weight and design.
Packing a Pallet: Boxes and barrels, containers and crates, parcels and pallets. If an object is odd sized or delicate, or when there are many items, you need special packaging to make moving safe and efficient. How many people pack onto a pallet? Find some friends and figure it out!
Turntable: Place different rolling objects, including rings, disks and spheres, on a rotating turntable. How long can you make them stay on the turntable without falling off?
Flow Table: Moving through air or water takes energy: the faster you go, the greater the drag. Some shapes are more efficient than others and size matters. What patterns do you see in the flow?
Traffic: Try your hand at managing a steady flow of traffic by putting discs of different shapes and sizes on an air-suspension track that moves the discs along. Can you avoid traffic-jams and tailgating?
Suitcase gyro: Pick up a suitcase from a stand and find that it moves on its own! A rapidly rotating object, such as the spinning flywheel inside the suitcase, has angular momentum, which causes the object to resist a change in its direction.

Big Truck Days, Saturday and Sunday, June 18-19th:
On display:
Miami-Dade County Hybrid Garbage Truck: The Miami-Dade Department of Solid Waste Management was the first municipal solid waste agency in the United States to take delivery of and put into service these advanced Series Hydraulic Hybrid Powered waste collection trucks. Benefits offered by this hybrid vehicle: reduction in diesel fuel consumption, by as much as 50%; cleaner air emissions; and reduced repair costs to the vehicle’s brake system.
Miami-Dade County Hybrid Bus: The County’s New Flyer 60 ft. articulated diesel-electric hybrid bus provides the following benefits: Improves fuel mileage by 20-35%, compared to conventional buses; and Lower green house gas emissions – NOx reductions of up to 50%.
Ryder’s Detroit Diesel Demand It All Tour Trailer

Activities:
Mousetrap Car: Students from the Museum’s Upward Bound program will show visitors how to build a ‘Mousetrap Car’. Visitors can build their own Mousetrap Cars and then race them. The best design wins a prize!
Ramp Control: For very young children – Use building blocks to create different size ramps and test how fast and how far your toy car can roll.
Lego Car Prototyping space: Use Legos to build and test your own solar- or air-powered car! Then, snap a picture of your creation and post it to our gallery screens to make it part of the exhibit.
Kid in a Candy Box: Visitors can try their hand at packing and stacking different sized candy boxes into a case to see how much they can fit.

Admission
Admission is free for Miami Science Museum members and children under 3; students (with valid ID), seniors (62+) and children 3 – 12, $10.95; adults are $14.95. Entry to Stingray Sea Lab is included in the price of admission. Dads get in FREE on Father’s Day, Sunday, June 19th.

Miami Art Museum will present the first mid-career survey of the work of Brazilian artist Rivane Neuenschwander (b. 1967, Belo Horizonte, Brazil) focusing on over ten years of innovative practice. Neuenschwander’s work, which includes painting, photography, film, sculpture, immersive installations and participatory actions, combines conceptual rigor, sensory appeal, poetic evocation and viewer interaction. Rivane Neuenschwander: A Day Like Any Other (July 17 through October 16, 2011) punctuates the elements that have led to her reputation as one of the most unique contributors to contemporary Brazilian art.

Inspired by nature, time, life cycles, mysteries of perception and human exchange, Neuenschwander creates playful, sensual and often participatory artworks that blur distinctions between author, artwork and viewer. For some of the work on view, Neuenschwander is the sole creator. Other pieces are the result of collaborations with entities as varied as musicians, forensic artists, bar patrons, nature and the exhibition’s visitors. Motifs that repeat with regularity include mapping, measuring, trading and categorization.

“Rivane Neuenschwander is a very unusual artist in that many of her artworks are collaborations with ‘partners’ over which she has little or no control–rain, gravity, ants, the public,” said Peter Boswell, assistant director for programs/senior curator, Miami Art Museum. “She initiates situations and then lets them go, giving up control. That kind of generosity and openness is pretty rare and the results are often amazingly poetic.”

The exhibition, presented in Miami Art Museum’s plaza-level gallery, will include two of Neuenschwander’s immersive, viscerally beautiful installations, Rain Rains (2002) and I Wish Your Wish (2003). Rain Rains is an environment of dripping buckets, suspended from the ceiling to create an artificial rain environment. I Wish Your Wish is inspired by a tradition of a church in Bahia, Brazil, in which the faithful bind ribbons to their wrists and to the gates of the church; according to tradition, their wishes are granted when the ribbons wear away and fall off. In Neuenschwander’s version, visitors choose from thousands of ribbons printed with the wishes from past visitors to the installation and replace them with wishes of their own, turning private aspiration into collective responsibility.

The importance of film and literary sources can be seen in The Conversation (2010), a skewed homage to Francis Ford Coppola’s 1972 film, and First Love (2005), a psychologically complex adaptation of Samuel Beckett’s novella by the same name. The Conversation, realized especially for this exhibition, is an immersive installation that investigates paranoia in an age in which privacy is no longer an individual’s natural right. In Neuenschwander’s First Love, visitors describe their ‘first love’ to a police sketch artist. The pencil sketches hang in the gallery for the duration of the exhibition, creating a very personal portrait gallery of perpetrators. In another work, A Thousand and One Possible Nights, Neuenschwander creates a calendar of constellation-like collages made by punching holes in pages of The Arabian Nights: Tales of 1,001 Nights.

In conjunction with the exhibition, Miami Art Museum has organized a satellite installation at Miami Dade College InterAmerican Campus, featuring a video art work in Miami Art Museum’s permanent collection entitled Quarta-Feira de Cinzas/Epilogue (Ash Wednesday/Epilogue). The video depicts ants laboriously hauling glittering pieces of multi-colored confetti into their holes, a reference to the aftermath of Carnival festivities in Brazil. The installation will be on view at InterAmerican Campus, 627 SW 27th Ave., Miami, FL 33135, from July 14 through August 7, 2011.

Exhibition’s More Than 200 Photographs By Acclaimed Photographers Including Annie Leibovitz, Alfred Eisenstaedt, and Tina Barney Chronicle Pivotal Life Moments Since the 1940s

Featuring photographs spanning slightly more than a 60-year time period, the Museum of Art I Fort Lauderdale’s exhibition The Art of Caring: A Look at Life through Photography examines the moments that shape our being and how key events in life are celebrated and honored. It also explores how pivotal decisions are made by different cultures throughout the world. The exhibition will be on view at the Museum June 5-Sept. 25, 2011.

The Art of Caring’s more than 200 photographs are organized into seven thematic sections: Children and Family, Love, Wellness, Healing, Disaster, Aging, and Remembering. The exhibition opens with a group of compelling images by Annie Leibovitz that she personally selected to represent all seven themes.

Inspired in part by the legendary photography exhibition The Family of Man, organized in 1955 by Edward Steichen for New York’s Museum of Modern Art, The Art of Caring is entertaining, thought-provoking and inspiring. The exhibition’s photographs have been lent by artists, museums, private collectors, and from the holdings of the Time/LIFE Picture Collection, which includes a number of classic images by legendary photographers such as Alfred Eisenstaedt, Gordon Parks, W. Eugene Smith, and Margaret Bourke-White.

Beginning with photos taken at the conclusion of World War II, the images allow viewers to witness many of the great events that shaped the last half-century, as well as those that are shaping the new millennium.

From intimate family scenes to a startling image of a dog and a large brood of hungry young puppies, the exhibition’s contemporary photos are memorable, insightful and beautiful. Works by well-known contemporary photographers such as Tina Barney, Nan Goldin, Sally Mann, Duane Michals, Nicolas Nixon, and Neal Slavin are combined with works by many younger artists including Elinor Carucci, Albert Chong, Loretta Lux, Walter Martin and Eliza French. Additional acclaimed contemporary photographers featuring works in the exhibition are Jessica Todd Harper, Catherine Opie, Peter Granser, and William Wegman.

Irvin Lippman, Executive Director of the Museum of Art, announced, “In conjunction with the exhibition, the Museum of Art is partnering with The United Way of Broward County to invite health and social service organizations to partner with us on a diverse array of programs. The Museum has a history of making community-based partnerships a cornerstone of our exhibition and educational programs. The Art of Caring provides a compelling opportunity to reflect upon how art reflects life: looking at aging, new family norms, environmental awareness, human rights issues, civil and military preparedness, acceptance of diversity, and our global economy.”

Organized by the New Orleans Museum of Art and guest curated by art historian Cynthia Goodman, Ph.D., the exhibition is accompanied by a fully-illustrated catalogue with an extensive essay by Dr. Goodman, which is available in Books & Books in the Museum’s lobby.

Irvin Lippman, the Museum’s Executive Director, said, “We anticipated that Vatican Splendors would be extremely popular, but the high attendance numbers have far exceeded our expectations. We’re very pleased that the exhibition’s time on view at the Museum has been extended with special permission from the Vatican by two weeks. It’s uniquely intriguing to a large number of people because it is highly uplifting, whether for religious, political, cultural, or historical reasons.”

Vatican Splendors: A Journey through Faith and Art presents spectacular paintings by artists such as Giotto and Il Guercino and sculpture by Baroque master Gian Lorenzo Bernini, along with unique objects illustrating the Catholic Church’s impact on history and culture. The exhibition’s nearly 200 objects, many of which have never been on public view, are presented in the Museum’s galleries and in specially-created environments that enhance the visitor’s understanding of both the historical as well as the artistic significance of each work. Objects include paintings, mosaics, sculpture, jewels, intricately embroidered silk vestments, uniforms of the Papal Swiss Guard, as well as an elaborately decorated gold and silver reliquary containing bone fragments of Saint Peter and Saint Paul.

The Vatican has played a central role in creating and preserving Western art and the exhibition includes major works created specifically for the Church. Collectively, they illustrate the evolution of the Church and its papacy beginning with Saint Peter, with special emphasis on art and historical objects reflecting significant events and periods relating to Christianity.

Since its founding in 1958, the Museum of Art I Fort Lauderdale has served our growing community as a gathering place for friends and neighbors, a lifelong learning center for children and adults, and as a dynamic hub for the cultural life of Broward County. Housed since 1986 in a distinguished modernist building designed by Edward Larrabee Barnes, the Museum is South Florida’s premier destination for quality exhibitions and programs that encompass every facet of civilization’s visual history. During the past five years, more than 11Ž2 million visitors have enjoyed remarkable exhibitions like Cradle of Christianity, Tutankhamun and the Golden Age of the Pharaohs, and American Chronicles: The Art of Norman Rockwell. Aviation In Miami: The First 100 Years
On View At The Museum From
June 24, 2011 Through January 15, 2012
On July 21, 1911, all of Miami gathered to witness an extraordinary event. Hired by Mayor Everest Sewell, aviator Howard Gill climbed into the cockpit of a wood and cloth-winged biplane furnished by the Wright Brothers and flew it up, up and away into the blue skies above the Miami Golf Links – performing the very first flight in the area. The rest, as they say, is history.
Aviation in Miami: The First 100 Years goes behind-the-scenes to explore the extensive engagement Greater Miami and its residents have had with the industry since this historic first flight. The exhibition addresses the evolving concerns of the aviation industry throughout the twentieth century and how they were tackled by the developers, the promoters, the pilots and the hundreds of thousands of Miamians who were employed or participated in the development of the field.
On view are artifacts from famed aviators such as Glenn Curtiss, Charles Lindbergh, Eddie Rickenbacker and Amelia Earhart and airlines such as Pan American World Airways and Eastern Airlines.

Souvenir Maps And Plates Of Florida
On View April 22, 2011 Through September 24, 2011
For more than a century, tourists have visited Florida attractions and admired our sub-tropical landscapes. Many returned home with a souvenir plate or pictorial map as a keepsake. Souvenir maps and plates often feature a picturesque scene and often boast tiny and often whimsical drawings of people, animals and landmarks. Popular during the twentieth century, some have become highly collectible antiques, while others are simply fun kitsch—mementos of a vacation in the sun. Be prepared to be charmed. This exhibition features a selection of maps and plates from the museum’s extensive collection – many on display for the first time.

Tropical Dreams: A People’s History Of South Florida
On Permanent Display
Explore 12,000 years of South Florida history as you wander through the permanent exhibition. Visit a re-creation of the Miami Circle and view a sea turtle shell and other artifacts from this 2,000 year-old settlement at the mouth of the Miami River. Climb aboard a 1920s trolley and take a video tour of historic Downtown Miami, Miami Beach and Coral Gables. View photographs of various communities and neighborhoods and learn the diverse ways that they arrived to the Magic City. Also on permanent display are original prints from John James Audubon’s The Birds of America.

“Education is at the heart of Miami Art Museum’s mission, and we are proud to have hosted the prestigious Scholastic Art Awards since 1996,” said MAM Director Thom Collins. “Miami Art Museum and Miami-Dade County Public Schools work together very closely to ensure that the students in Miami-Dade County have the opportunity to experience art and the Museum.

Miami Art Museum’s educational programming currently reaches more than 30,000 annually, with the largest youth art education program outside the Miami-Dade County public school system. The Museum serves thousands of children through its free program: free buses to visit MAM, free guided museum tours for students and their teachers, free classroom visits, free support materials for teachers at Teacher Workshops, and more. Miami Art Museum’s new facility in Museum Park, scheduled to open to the public in 2013, will include an educational complex with space to further expand MAM & Schools and other art education programs.

The Scholastic Art Awards are the largest and longest-running assessment and recognition programs for the visual arts in the United States. Founded in 1923 by Scholastic Inc., the nation’s leading publisher of children’s books and educational materials, the awards have been administered since 1992 by the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers, a not-for-profit corporation. The awards are open to students in grades 7-12 in the United States, Canada, U.S. Territories and U.S.-sponsored schools abroad. Entry materials reach 12 million students in 99% of America’s schools (public, private, and parochial) and attract more than 250,000 entries each year. Miami-Dade County Public Schools is the regional sponsor of The Awards.

At the conclusion of this Miami-Dade County regional exhibition, one of 92 across the country, top award-winning artworks are forwarded to the national program in New York City. A distinguished panel of prominent artists and arts professionals selects the national awards. National awardees are honored at the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards ceremony at Carnegie Hall. Award-winning artwork is installed in galleries in New York; and at the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. adjacent to the White House.

The 2011 Scholastic Art Awards and Exhibition is part of MAM & Schools presented by Target. Additional support for this program is provided by The Heckscher Foundation for Children, William Randolph Hearst Foundation, Citizens Interested in Arts, Inc. and MAM Annual Education Fund Donors.

Speed Limits To Open At The Wolfsonian–FIU 9/17/10

‘Speed Limits’ To Open At The Wolfsonian–FIU September 17, 2010
Upcoming Exhibition Celebrates The Hundredth Anniversary Of Italian Futurism

The Wolfsonian–Florida International University presents Speed Limits, an exhibition which explores the role of speed in modern life and celebrates the hundredth anniversary of Italian Futurism. In 1909, the “Foundation and Manifesto of Futurism” proclaimed that “the world’s magnificence has been enriched by a new beauty: the beauty of speed.” A century later, as the tempo of life continues to accelerate, Speed Limits asks critical questions about the impact of speed on our daily lives. The exhibition, on view from September 17, 2010 through February 20, 2011, is co-organized by The Wolfsonian and the Canadian Centre for Architecture (CCA) and is curated by Jeffrey T. Schnapp, CCA Mellon senior fellow and professor at Stanford University.

“This exhibition reflects on the legacy of the Futurist movement’s celebration of speed, and moves beyond art and literature into the realms of material culture, the built environment, popular entertainment, and everyday life,” explains Marianne Lamonaca, The Wolfsonian’s associate director for curatorial affairs and education. “It also brings into focus some of the key issues that affect each of us in our daily lives, such as the ubiquity of portable communication devices and the proliferation of nutritionally deficient food.” To inaugurate the show, The Wolfsonian will organize a happening on September 16, 2010, and a formal event celebrating the museum’s fifteenth anniversary on November 11, 2010.

Speed Limits presents more than 200 works from the collections of The Wolfsonian and the CCA and features a variety of media, including posters, books, drawings, clocks, paintings, and video installations. Critical rather than commemorative in spirit, the exhibition explores a single Futurist theme from the standpoint of its contemporary legacies and probes the powers and limits of the modern era’s cult of speed in five key domains: circulation and transit; construction and the built environment; efficiency; the measurement and representation of rapid motion; and the mind/body relationship.

CIRCULATION AND TRANSIT
Multiple perceptions of traffic and its models are vital to an understanding of the city and society. The exhibition bears witness to the prevalent dream of an urban space with freely-flowing traffic, and illustrates the concept of the grid or network that governs the movement not only of objects and goods but also of information. This is juxtaposed with the breakdown of circulation—the traffic jam. The overcrowding of city streets is captured in a series of photographs taken by John Veltri in New York City in 1938 and in the print by Benton Spruance from 1937. Visual records are accompanied by archival documents and studies of transportation efficiency and accident patterns related to increasing speeds.

CONSTRUCTION AND THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT
Architecture is a motive force behind the speeding-up of life, reflected in the increasing efficiency of construction processes. The phenomenon is illustrated through photographic sequences capturing the erection of the Irving Trust Building (New York), the Eiffel Tower (Paris), and Rem Koolhaas’s China Central Television building (Beijing). The fast pace of construction of these and other buildings can be analyzed by studying dated sequential images. Prefabrication served as a major drive towards increasing construction efficiency, and is represented by various trade catalogs of homes and other building types, as well as photographs documenting their assembly.

EFFICIENCY
Examining how notions of efficient production evolved over time, the exhibition focuses on two types of space transformed by speed, one public and the other domestic: the office and the kitchen. Filing systems, processors, and office furniture play a central role making work spaces fast and efficient. A remarkable 1936 project by Josef Ehm features an electrically-powered mechanical classifier, allowing workers of the Central Social Institution in Prague to access large-scale card catalogs via mechanized desks on lifts. The exhibition also includes photographs by Balthazar Korab that capture the modernized workspaces of the 1960s, as well as studies of the productivity of workers and their equipment such as Frank B. Gilbreth’s films of American workers in the 1910s and ‘20s. Photographs of Christine Frederick show her testing and demonstrating kitchen efficiencies in the early 20th century, when electrification, new equipment and appliances, and a redesigned space increase the speed of domestic activities. Alongside commercial artifacts and documentation, the exhibition includes architects’ studies such as drawings by Le Corbusier analyzing kitchen dimensions.

THE MEASUREMENT AND REPRESENTATION OF RAPID MOTION
Addressing the cognitive challenges with which humanity is surrounded, the exhibition features material about information compression through strata of signs, signals and messages, or diagrams that reduce complex traffic data to a usable visual representation. Increasingly, humans are processing complex overlapping of information including time and related data. This growth is reflected in a collection of clocks illustrating the tempo of modern life, and the increasing sophistication and number of instruments and devices that measure motion: accelerometers, altimeters, odometers, speedometers.

Also presented are posters and graphics whose design captures the notion of speed in order to more effectively promote cars, tires, oils, and other products or services built celebrating new levels of speed.

THE MIND/BODY RELATIONSHIP
The exhibition suggests different ways in which acceleration is associated on the one hand with pleasure—ecstasy, the search for powerful sensations, and overstimulation—and on the other with exhaustion, risk, and injury. Representations of the body in motion include the transformation of the body itself into a speeding object, gymnastics and popular athleticism in the early 20th century, the current cult of the body, natural and artificial improvements in physical culture, stimulants and tranquilizers, and the remedies associated with stimulants. Among speed’s pharmaceutical avatars are caffeine, cocaine, amphetamines, and the active ingredients in energy drinks.

The exhibition is accompanied by a publication of the same title, edited by Schnapp and co-published by The Wolfsonian, the CCA, and Skira Editore, Milan. The catalog includes new essays by Timothy Alborn, Yve-Alain Bois, Edward Dimendberg, Maria Gough, Antonino Mastruzzo, Jeffrey L. Meikle, Pierre Niox, Marjorie Perloff, Mark Seltzer, and Anthony Vidler; an anthology of historical texts; the visual essay “Rush City” by Schnapp; and studies of the impact of speed on contemporary society. The 320-page catalog ($39) is available in The Dynamo Museum Shop. To purchase, contact paola@thewolf.fiu.edu or 305.535.2680.

The Wolfsonian thanks the following supporters for making this exhibition possible: James Woolems and Woolems Inc.; Rene Gonzalez Architects; the Funding Arts Network; Continental Airlines, the Official Airline of The Wolfsonian–FIU; The Wolfsonian–FIU Alliance; the Frances L. Wolfson Fund at Dade Community Foundation; and FPL FiberNet, a leading provider of fiber-optic solutions.

The collections comprise approximately 120,000 objects from the period of 1885 to 1945—the height of the Industrial Revolution to the end of the Second World War—in a variety of media including furniture; industrial-design objects; works in glass, ceramics, and metal; rare books; periodicals; ephemera; works on paper; paintings; textiles; and medals.

The Wolfsonian is located at 1001 Washington Avenue, Miami Beach, FL. Admission is $7 for adults; $5 for seniors, students, and children age 6 -12; and free for Wolfsonian members, State University System of Florida staff and students with ID, and children under six. The Museum of Art | Fort Lauderdale and Nova Southeastern University Present The Muscular Body as Living Art 7/9/09

The Museum of Art | Fort Lauderdale and Nova Southeastern University Present: “The Muscular Body as Living Art” A live art exhibition and discussion

On Thursday, July 9, at 6:00 p.m., the Museum of Art | Fort Lauderdale, Nova Southeastern University and the 2009 NPC Southern States Fitness, Figure, Bikini & Bodybuilding Championships will unite to present “The Muscular Body as Living Art.” The special event will be held at the Museum of Art | Fort Lauderdale’s Horvitz Auditorium and outdoor Sculpture Terrace in the heart of downtown Fort Lauderdale, Florida. This summer’s event is inspired by the Whitney Museum of American Art’s 1976 live exhibition, “The Body as Art,” which featured Arnold Schwarzenegger, Frank Zane, and Ed Corney.

Ellie Rodriguez, the entertainment reporter for Deco Drive, will host “The Muscular Body as Living Art” – a fun, live exhibition featuring NPC Bodybuilding Champions with commentary by noted faculty from Nova Southeastern University. The faculty will discuss male and female muscular body images throughout art history from sculpture to pop art. During the discussion, NPC Bodybuilding Champions will bring iconic sculptures such as The Thinker, Diana (goddess of the hunt), Hercules (of the Theatre of Pompey), and Michelangelo’s David to life-posed on pedestals. The audience is invited to participate in what promises to be a lively discussion on male and female muscular body images in society.

“Artists for centuries have studied the human body, its contours, beauty, and power,’’ said Irvin Lippman, Executive Director of the Museum of Art | Fort Lauderdale. “Now, front and center for the first time, and guaranteed to be a one-day blockbuster, we offer you what promises to be an exceptional exhibition of muscular energy.”

The event will be followed by an outdoor party with refreshments featuring bodybuilders posing, live musical performances and an extravagant wall-to-wall screening of the Arnold Schwarzenegger documentary “Pumping Iron.”

“This event will be an exciting pre-event to our 2009 NPC Southern States Championships,” commented Peter W. Potter, NPC National Vice-President & Promoter. “From the classical times of the Greeks & Romans to the present, a muscular physique has been the subject of artists and sculptors world-wide. The participating bodybuilders will exhibit the finest physiques of the present, as they will be in contest shape ready for the July 10-11 2009 NPC Southern States Championships contest.”

“The Muscular Body as Living Art” will be an excellent preview to NPC Southern States Fitness, Figure, Bikini & Bodybuilding Championships on July 10th and July 11th at the War Memorial Auditorium in Fort Lauderdale. The NPC Southern States Fitness, Figure, Bikini & Bodybuilding Championships is the largest, regional national qualifier east of the Mississippi and includes teenage, adult and senior competitors (both men and women) from ten different states plus Puerto Rico. The NPC Southern States Fitness, Figure, Bikini & Bodybuilding Championships is open to any athlete registered by the NPC (National Physique Committee) which is a part of the International Federation of Body Builders, an international amateur sports organization. Renaissance and Baroque Painting and Sculpture from the Bass Museum of Art Collection Now on View

The Bass Museum presents new installations of paintings and sculptures from the permanent collection, installed in two pristine galleries on the first level. The first exhibition showcases The Sacred and Sublime: Renaissance and Baroque Art from the Collection, that highlights important examples of Northern European Renaissance and Baroque art. Works on view span three centuries and include religious paintings by Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640), Gerard Seghers (1591-1651) and Cornelis Cornelisz van Haarlem (1562-1638). Also see the museum’s 16th century tapestry masterpiece The Salute before the Tournament, a prime example of King Henry’s favorite artistic medium that was purchased by J. Pierpont Morgan in the early twentieth- century before it came into John Bass’s collection.
The South Gallery is the newest addition to the Bass galleries. Overlooking Collins park, this intimate space showcases Reflections of the Renaissance and Antiquity, that includes works such as Benjamin West’s Anne, Countess of Northampton, and Her Daughter and Eduard Veith’s The Holy Family (Rest on the Flight into Egypt) which are direct references to Italian Renaissance compositions. Also on view are works by artists such as John Hoppner, Thomas Barker and Paul Manship that celebrate the lasting influence of the Italian Renaissance.
Both installations are curated by Ruth Grim, Curator of Collections
