Dog Gone Great Day at Keys Woofstock!

Yes, you read that right. WooFstock. As in, woof woof, what your doggy says to you when he needs to go out, or sees someone at your door, or hears the front gate close, or you sneeze, or….

Anyway, this isn’t about my dog’s frequent and annoying habit of barking at the air, it’s about a fantastic, free, dog-friendly event sponsored by MarrVelous Pet Rescues & Adoptions. The location? Well, this is Florida after all, and all fabulous events here take place ocean-front, and Woofstock was no exception. Beautiful Founder’s Park in Islamorada, FL played host to the thousands of furry friends and the people who obsess over them.

Every dog you could imagine was represented at Woofstock: big Great Danes, tiny Chihuahuas, new hybrid types like my unique German Sheagle, marvelous mixes of all kinds, and even a fluffy white guy who was tie-dyed pink, blue, and green in true hippie form. Speaking of tie dye, there certainly was plenty of it. From the vendors to the staff, bright colorful fabric abounded, keeping the theme of the day consistent.

The adjacent dog park served to shed some energy off the excited pups, but all animals were leashed and well-behaved as they explored the many booths. Treats and lunch for dogs and humans alike were for sale at reasonable prices. Local restaurants offering fresh seafood added spice to the usual street food type fare. But by far, the most popular and exciting areas were the doggy dock diving and lure racing. For a meager $10, your little angel could race around the track chasing a stuffed animal or fly through the air and into the pool after his favorite toy. It’s a competition so make a note of your time and distance! Ours was 10.4 seconds, heck yeah!

Plenty of scents for doggy noses and sweet tunes for human eardrums polished up the day perfectly. A local band of teenagers brought ska style funk and fun loving fans who danced hard right up front. Juxtaposed thereafter was the middle aged group of rockers whose drummer crooned 70s ballads and 90s rock anthems to which everyone sings along.

Keys Woofstock was a well-organized event that was fun for the entire family. Next year we’ll be back, and I’ll be sure to get the word out in advance so everyone can enjoy it. If you would like to support Keys Woofstock, please follow the below link to make a donation to the Marr-Velous Pet Rescues & Adoptions of the Florida Keys.

The Dog Beach of Hollywood, FL

The Dog Beach of Hollywood, FL
Between Pershing and Custer Streets on the Ocean
www.dboh.org

The emotions I felt when I took my little angel to the dog beach in Hollywood, FL for the first time were overwhelming. Boundi and the other dogs ran, swam, played fetch, chased each other, and generally had the time of their lives, all free from leash restraint.

The friendly dogs and people who shared the experience with us on this fall day smiled and laughed as we talked about our pets and threw tennis balls deep into the Atlantic. Everyone cleaned up after their pet(s) and our dog even cleaned up after some ungrateful beach goer, who had littered a plastic bag in the ocean. Ever the loyal retriever, Boundi brought the bag to our feet and we properly disposed of it.

I like very much that they have a public official or park officer of some kind there on the sand to ensure everyone’s safety, though he wasn’t utilized during my visit.

For Miami Dade dog lovers who have visited the “dog beach” on Key Biscayne: DON’T! Don’t ever go there again. I know we won’t. Even though it’s a bit of a drive to the Hollywood beach, the experience is more than worth it and the beach doesn’t even compare to the dirty area on the causeway where they allow dogs in Miami.
Bottom Line: This gorgeous beach is amazing just for human recreation, and allowing furry friends to share in the fun takes it to another fantastic level!

Electric Vehicle Demo Day 11/13/10

Electric Vehicle Demo Day
Saturday, November 13, Noon – 6 PM
Miami City Hall
3500 Pan American Drive, Miami

Test ride electric motorcycles and electric bicycles.

Hosted by Commissioner Marc Sarnoff, The Electric Bicycle Store, Dylectric Motorsports and BrickPig Motorsports

Zero Emissions; Zero Noise; Zero Pollution

Go Green! Just plug it in, and charge it!

Commissioner Marc Sarnoff to Host Event at City Hall to Put the Spotlight on “Green” Electric Vehicles: Saturday, November 13
Public Invited To Test-Ride Electric Bicycles and Motorcycles

FREE TEST RIDES: Anyone age 18 or over may take a test-ride on one of the many electric bicycles or motorcycles on display. Some motorcycle models will require a valid driver’s license. Zero Emissions; Zero Noise; Zero Pollution

Refreshments will be served, and we encourage those who want to learn more about electric transportation to come out and have a ride.

In conjunction with the City of Miami’s ongoing programs to encourage businesses and residents to “go green.”

Wildly popular in Europe and Asia, electric transportation is finally taking hold in the U.S. No longer limited to two-wheeled electric bicycles, the choices now include scooters, tricycles, folding bikes, remote-controlled skateboards and even motorcycles.

About Electric Bicycles:
§ Just plug it in and charge it! An electric bicycle has an electric helper motor powered by a rechargeable battery and a method of control to offer either totally motorized cycling or a mix of pedal and motor power, known as pedal-assist
§ Eco-Friendly, emitting zero carbon emissions and virtually noiseless. It’s the perfect solution for alternative commuting.
§ Commute for miles without breaking a sweat – Ride as if the wind is always at your back
§ Health Benefits – For baby boomers who experience joint pain – especially in the knees – the “pedal-assist” of electric bicycles ease the discomfort and provide the benefits of exercise, without the pain.
§ No driver’s license, no vehicle registration required, no gas, no sweat!

For those who seek the thrill of a motorcycle, the Zero provides a practical, fun and environmentally-friendly alternative – without the pollution, without the noise, without the carbon emissions.

The Zero motorcycle will produce less than 1/8 of the CO2 pollution per mile as a gas powered motorcycle. It also will produce 1/100th of smog causing nitrous oxides. With a range of 60 miles per charge, it costs about one cent per mile to operate; the gas equivalent of 455 miles per gallon.

Coral Gables Museum and Green Mobility Network present the Seersucker Social Bicycle Tour 10/16/10

Coral Gables Museum and Green Mobility Network present the Seersucker Social Bicycle Tour
Saturday, October 16 at 10:30am
University Metrorail Station on Ponce de Leon Boulevard

The Coral Gables Tweed Ride this past winter featured over 100 riders on a variety of bikes who pedaled through the City Beautiful donning vintage attire. Next month, the Coral Gables Museum and the Green Mobility Network are teaming up to present a biking event fashioned for South Florida’s warm, early autumn weather.

The Seersucker Social, on Saturday, October 16, will offer another enjoyable and relaxing biking experience by encouraging participants to tour the Gables in their best seersucker ensemble. According to Wikipedia, seersucker was originally worn by the poor in the U.S. until undergraduate students, in an air of reverse snobbery, began to wear the fabric. Damon Runyon wrote that his new habit for wearing seersucker was “causing much confusion among my friends. They cannot decide whether I am broke or just setting a new vogue.” Let’s opt for the latter!

Participants will gather at the University Metrorail Station on Ponce de Leon Boulevard at 10:30am and bicycle through the Gables, with a stop and tour at the Coral Gables Museum, and then pedal on to the historic Coral Gables Merrick House at 907 Coral Way for a picnic, badminton and croquet. The catered lunch featuring fabulous food from the Green Gables Café is $14 per person. You can still join in the fun and ride without purchasing the picnic lunch.

For more details, and to purchase/reserve your picnic lunch, please visit coralgablesmuseum.org/seersuckersocial.php or greenmobilitynetwork.org.

Green Mobility Network is an education and advocacy group that promotes walking, running and bicycling as necessary elements of a healthy and desirable community.

The Coral Gables Museum’s mission is to celebrate, investigate and explore all aspects of architecture, landscape architecture, design and urban planning as well as historic and environmental preservation, set within the context of one of America’s first and most successful planned communities – the City of Coral Gables.

What’s What with The Webster

The Webster
1220 Collins Avenue, Miami Beach, FL
thewebstermiami.com

By Talmage Thornhill
The Webster is undeniably cool. It has a pricey boutique with several different merchandise brands on the first and second floors. There’s a restaurant whose menu looks delectable, but so far I have only been tempted enough to try the rooftop bar and lounge.

Quite the chic sobe experience, everything about this place is hip: beautiful people, comfortable seating, exciting open view of Collins Ave from above, and eclectic, interesting music. In fact, the Thursday night DJ is one of the most creative cats spinning records I’ve heard in Miami in quite some time.

They have an excellent late night happy hour, during which cocktails are a mere $5. Paula, our cocktail server for the night, was as gorgeous as the bottle girls at Mynt and Mokäi but thankfully omits the snooty, I-deserve-all-of-your-money-and-you-are-lucky-to-be-here-attitude that too frequently accompanies so many of her contemporaries. The drinks are strong and there’s not a plastic cup in sight.

The bathrooms are downstairs, a bit far from the rooftop, but that’s the only thing that doesn’t basically totally rock about this joint.

I can’t wait to go back!

Dan Marino Foundation Teams Up With Five Local Autism Agencies For The 1st Annual
Dan Marino Foundation Walkabout Autism
Sun Life Stadium, home of the Miami Dolphins

www.dmfwalkaboutautism.org

The Dan Marino Foundation has teamed up with five South Florida autism agencies to create the 1st Annual Dan Marino Foundation WalkAbout Autism, benefiting the Autism Societies of Miami-Dade and Broward Counties, UM-NSU CARD (Center for Autism & Related Disabilities), FAU CARD, and the Dan Marino Foundation. . This exciting and unique event will take place on Saturday, January 29th, 2011 from 10 am to 2 pm at the home of the Miami Dolphins, Sun Life Stadium.

Driven by individuals with autism and their families and friends, this historic fundraising effort will generate crucial funds for the autism community of South Florida. Corporate sponsorships are available, and corporate teams are encouraged to join the fun. All proceeds raised through this event will stay in our local community and benefit autism services, and awareness. Participating schools in South Florida will receive 25% of the money raised by their teams to support special needs programming in their school. Autism is the fastest-growing developmental disorder. According to the Center for Disease Control, 1 in 110 children in the United States have autism.

“As parents of children with autism, my wife Rachel and I are thrilled to be a part of the Dan Marino Foundation WalkAbout Autism,” noted Jeff Ireland, General Manager of the Miami Dolphins. “We know first hand the importance of support services for children and adults with autism and this event will raise money specifically for those services right here in South Florida. Having the event at Sun Life Stadium where Dan played his Hall of Fame career for the Miami Dolphins seemed like the perfect choice.”

Celebrity walk attendees include:
· Dan Marino: Legendary Hall of Fame & Miami Dolphins Quarterback
· Rachel & Jeff Ireland, Miami Dolphins General Manager
· Alumni Miami Dolphins Players
· Miami-Dade and Broward County Elected Officials

Good karma and a pool party this Sunday Kids welcome 9/12/10

Hello friends, here is a great way to enjoy your Sunday morning….at the park for a nice walk, some light brunch and a dip in the pool.

Please join us this Sunday, September 12th @ 9am @ Tamiami Park for a 5K Awareness Walk. We are walking on behalf of those families that have Huntington’s Disease, a rare genetic neurological disease. If you mixed Alherimer’s, Parkinson’s and ALS, you would have Huntington’s Disease.

Even though this disease is rare, it does not make it is any less impactful to the people going through it.

REGISTRATION IS FREE…but a small donation is suggested.
To pre-register, go to: www.firstgiving.com/hdsa-sfl
or just show up at the pool at Tamiami Park between 8am and 9am

As for Huntington’s Disease, is as devastating as it is destructive. Because it is genetic, if it runs in your family tree, you have a 50/50 chance of developing it. I know families that have a father taking care of his wife and his son at the same time because both of them have HD! It’s intense. I can explain HD and if effects but I didn’t truly understand until I started watching videos of
families sharing their intimate stories of their loved ones. The footage may be hard to watch but will help you realize why we are all so dedicated in making a cure a reality.

Photographs of The Great Grove Bed Race on 9/5/10

The Great Grove Bed Race in Coconut Grove on Sunday, August 5, 2010.  The Bed Race is a free community event and fundraiser in Coconut Grove. This event proves a community can come together, have fun, be unique and hilarious and raise funds for the University of Miami and the Alonzo Mourning Charities. The race involves rolling beds down a 1/8th mile “drag strip” street in Coconut Grove with the local community, individuals, businesses, organizations, and clubs sponsoring the beds. Teams consist of four race-bed pushers and one in-bed rider all racing against the clock until the fastest eight bed teams are determined and race head-to-head for the top position. Prizes were awarded for theme, décor, and racing success.

Here are some additional photographs by Larry Lacayo of the Red Bull Flugtag Miami at Bayfront Park on Saturday, July 10, 2010.  If your German is a bit rusty, Flugtag means “flying day.”   Teams from across the east coast looked to defy gravity with their human-powered flying machines at Red Bull Flugtag Miami today. After reviewing more than 270 applications, 38 teams received their boarding passes to participate in the outrageous flying competition hosted at Bayfront Park. Team American Muscle, Save Salad Toss Pizza and Das Jorts, entertained the crowd as they launched their crafts to soar across the bay.  The winning team, Team Formula Flug from Palm Beach Gardens, FL, flew more than 50 feet and their craft stayed in one piece.  All of the entries were awesome, and some were very creative.  They claim over 100,000 attendees and I believe it, so many people and so many boats it was amazing.  Can’t wait for next time, I might just have to come up with an idea and try out….GO RED BULL!!!

Red Bull Flugtag, which means “flying day” in German, is a competition that dares both the brave and the brainy to design, build and pilot homemade flying machines off a 30-foot high ramp in hopes of achieving human-powered flight. But don’t be fooled – this is no ordinary flying competition. While distance is important, creativity and showmanship are necessary to impress the judges. These criteria have inspired such outrageous crafts as a sky-high Popemobile, an airborne outhouse, a flying fire engine, and even a replica of Santa and his sleigh to test their wings at Red Bull Flugtag.

RED BULL FLUGTAG MIAMI FLIGHT MANIFESTO COMPLETE
38 Teams to Take the Plunge into Biscayne Bay on July 10 th at Bayfront Park

MIAMI – May 6, 2010 – Teams from across the east coast look to defy gravity with their human-powered flying machines on July 10th at Red Bull Flugtag Miami. After reviewing more than 270 applications, 38 teams received their boarding passes to participate in the outrageous flying competition hosted at Bayfront Park. Selected flyers like Team American Muscle, Save Salad Toss Pizza and Das Jorts, will entertain the crowd as they launch their crafts with hopes of soaring across the bay.

If your German is a bit rusty, Flugtag means “flying day.” Each team of daredevils will launch from 30 feet above Biscayne Bay at Bayfront Park and attempt to take flight in their homemade crafts. The panel of celebrity judges will take three criteria into account in deciding who makes the podium: distance flown, creativity of the craft and the team’s showmanship on stage. Spectators will also have the opportunity to chime in for their favorite team via SMS voting to select the People’s Choice.

JAMAICAN BOBSLED, RUBBER DUCKY

Red Bull Flugtag Miami will have 38 outrageous crafts, ranging from flying squirrels, a giant guitar and a three tiered wedding cake topped with a bride and groom, built by participants ranging from pilots to engineering students and animators to roller derby girls. Each team of five will need to bring out their inner stuntman and sheer silliness in order to make a splash against a wide array of talent.

While the sky may be the limit on creativity, there are still a few flight regulations. First off, all flying machines must be entirely human-powered (no external energy sources or stored power, so forget about the slingshots, catapults or anything besides your own burliness). Second, no matter what they say, size does matter – all crafts must be less than 30 feet wide and must weigh no more than 450 lbs. (including the pilot).

PREPARE FOR TAKE OFF

For Flugtag novices, the first Red Bull Flugtag took off in Vienna, Austria in 1991 and has since visited more than 30 countries around the world attracting crowds of up to 300,000. Currently, 195 feet stands as the farthest flight which was set back in 2000 in Austria, but the US isn’t far behind with a record of 155 feet set in 2007 in Nashville, Tenn.! Miami will host the first 2010 Red Bull Flugtag in the US followed by the Twin Cities, MN, Long Beach, CA and Philadelphia, PA.

Red Bull Flugtag is a free event and open to the public. Gates open at 10:00am and the first craft launches for flight at 12:00pm.

Key West Weekend Getaway and Sky Diving adventure 8/13-15/10

Key West Weekend Getaway & Sky Diving adventure
August 13-15, 2010,
Key West, Fl.
Facebook Event Page.

Depending on the number of people coming on the trip, we will be chartering a 30 or 50 passenger bus. Estimated transportation cost will be under $50/pp for the round-trip. As soon as we know if we need a 30 or 50 passenger bus, we will be able to provide the exact cost of the transportation per person.

You do not have to go sky diving, but it is an activity we are planning for those who do want to go. We currently have 2 proposals from hotels close to Duval street that can accommodate our group.

The Pier House Resort has offered us a $229 nightly rate for their Lenai Rooms. The rates for that weekend are usually $254/ night. Each Lenai room has a balcony and pool view. They can have either 1 king bed or 2 queen beds. The Pier House is located on Duval Street, right next to the pier, so it is extremely central to everything in Key West. If you take a room with 2 queen beds, it can accommodate up to 4 adults.

The other proposal we have is from the Best Western Hibiscus Motel which is located on the opposite end of Duval Street and is a little further from ‘all the action”. The room rates, however, are lower at $129 per night.

I am still waiting to hear back from a few other hotels to see what their pricing is, but I wanted to get this information out to everyone as soon as possible.

Anyone interested in sky diving must be over 18 y/o and weigh less than 240 lbs. A $50 non-refundable deposit will be needed to reserve your spot on the sky diving adventure. The deposit is required because the sky diving company will charge us this money if you cancel. The airplane will take 2 sky divers up at a time (plus the tandem partner). So we are not able to all go together. A spectator’s area is located at the airport where our friends can watch & wait for our safe return.

The cost per person is $245 if you pay by credit card or $225 by using cash. Video and stills are $99 per person.

We need to get an indication of how many people will be coming so we can finish making all the necessary arrangements. To reserve your place in the trip, a $50 deposit will be required for each group that is traveling. This $50 deposit is separate from the $50 deposit for sky diving.

Provisions will be made in case there is any inclement weather that prevents the trip from taking place and you will receive either a refund or the deposit will be applied to the trip for when it is rescheduled. The deposits will be processed through Paypal, so your payment is secure.

Saturday night pub crawl to celebrate our successful sky dives, Sunday return, leaving Key West by 2PM.

We will be finalizing all plans & accommodations after this event is published. Please email info@mycircles.com to get the final details and to reserve your spot on the trip. Space is subject to availability and will be on a first-come-first-serve basis.

Skydive Key West. We are a very personal Dropzone and take tremendous pride in our 100% safety record, our experience (instructors with 5000+ jumps) and our professionalism. And of course, the beautiful Florida Keys is the most gorgeous place to ever make a skydive. We are located on Sugarloaf Key, which is on mile marker 17 on US Hwy 1. That’s just 15-20 Minutes outside of Key West.
We do tandem skydives like you can see on the picture on our website SkydiveKeyWest.com everyday between 10am and sunset. After just a brief training tape, you’ll be able to experience the rush of jumping out of a ‘perfectly good airplane’ and freefall at 120 miles per hour.

Deep Impact Chief Operational Officer and avid racer Michael Rojas will take to the waters off of Sunny Isles Beach on Saturday, June 12, 2010 to defend his Center Console Class championship title in the 3rd annual Bimini Ocean Challenge. Rojas and racing partner Tim Gallagher, aim to maneuver their Deep Impact crafted 360 FS Quad, powered by four 350 horsepower Mercury Racing engines, down the 106-mile stretch of sea to Bimini and back to Haulover Beach Park. Rojas will look to beat the 1 hour 25 minute mark that brought him his first victory in 2009. A repeat win would provide yet another token of merit to his burgeoning Miami-based manufacturing company of high performance power boats, which has experienced a recent revitalization ever since the former magna cum laude finance graduate took over the reigns in 2009 to spearhead the restructuring of the Deep Impact brand.

The Bimini Ocean Challenge is just one portion of the five-day Sunny Isles Beach Offshore Power Boat Challenge, a charitable endeavor which aims to raise funds for the restoration of the now defunct Miami Marine Stadium in Key Biscayne, once the official home of speed boat racing in Miami. The events begin on Thursday, June 11 and culminate on Monday, June 14, 2010. Sole on the Ocean hotel in Sunny Isles Beach will host viewing parties throughout the weekend.

Deep Impact is a Miami-based renowned manufacturer of high-quality, high-performance sport-fishing powerboats that utilizes the factory direct sales method. Montes, aka Chef Sazón (@chefsazon), is one of the most talented chefs in South Florida, a rising star among his peers. Earlier this year, he won second place in the Amstel Light Burger Bash national competition at the South Beach Food & Wine Festival, which was sponsored by the Food Network. So it will be tough to beat him, but it won’t be tough to enjoy his company as he is one of the most personable chefs in South Florida.

And if that’s not enough, Miami’s very own Burger Beast will be one of three judges determining the winner. The Burger Beast (@burgerbeast) is South Florida’s renowned burger critic. Among the judges, Dori Zinn, Founder and President of the Fat Kids Club. Recently, Dori Zinn (@dorizinn) was choosen on South Florida Food & Wine “Blogger in the Spotlight” section as one of the hottest food blogs to follow.

The burger competition is only open to members of the Homemade Chefs Meetup Group. But joining the group is free. The event, however, is open to everybody. And guests are encouraged to bring a side dish to participate in the SIDE DISH & DESSERT COMPETITION. There will also be a DJ and prize drawings. Meal includes: burgers, sides, desserts, beverages, beer and wine.

Description:

The Food for Life Network (FFLN) AIDS Marathon/Half-Marathon was founded in 2008. The marathon seeks to raise HIV/AIDS awareness in the South Florida community and beyond while simultaneously raising money for Food for Life Network, Inc.

Food for Life Network, Inc. is a 503[c](3) non-profit organization that provides groceries, meals and nutritional education to eliminate malnutrition and starvation in men, women and children living with HIV/AIDS in Miami-Dade County. They are committed to delivering services with compassion and confidentiality, to fostering clients’ dignity and independence, and to enhancing clients’ quality of life.  Since 1987, Food for Life Network, Inc. staff and its volunteers have provided over 1.5 million meals and groceries to people living with HIV/AIDS at no cost to their clients. FFLN is a part of Community AIDS Resource, Inc. (aka “Care Resource”).

Because FFLN, Inc. never charges its clients for their services and because the services we provide are so crucial, we look to socially responsible individuals, businesses, and community leaders like you for help You may not know it, but for as little as $40.00, you can help to feed one homebound client for a week or provide 21 meals for one food bank client. The larger the donation, the greater good we can do. FFLN, Inc. provides other services in addition to its meals on wheels program. For example, FFLN, Inc. clients have access to dieticians and nutritionists. Available services include a BIA testing for muscle mass, fat and water in the tissue, and an individual health eating habit survey. These assessments help FFLN, Inc.’s dieticians and nutritionists construct new diets to improve their clients eating habits. FFLN, Inc. also provides food safety tips which are crucial to HIV/AIDS clients who often have to alter their diet to tolerate their medicine and maximize their strength and overall health.

In addition to making a contribution to this very important cause, you can register as an individual or, if you are a business owner, register your company to participate in the upcoming marathon/half marathon. You can also volunteer your time, talents and/or professional services.

The FFLN AIDS Marathon is hosted annually by ING Miami Marathon. This year the marathon is January 31, 2010. Our goal is to raise $50,000. Fundraising will continue until goal our reached. You can make a direct donation online using a debit or credit card or download the donation form and mail in your donation. Please make checks payable to: FFLN AIDS Marathon 2010. All contributions raised by the marathon go directly to FFLN, Inc., which allocates 85% to client services. All contributions are tax deductible.

Building A Future (BAF) is hosting a fundraiser and donating all proceeds to eight family support centers in Honduras. These facilities provide approximately 1,000 at-risk children with daily meals, supplementary education, and a place to stay when they have nowhere else to go.
Due to the tense political situation of the past months, the centers in Honduras have not received the subsidies necessary to carry out its activities in favor of the most impoverished of children. Without this help, these support centers will be forced to drastically reduce or cease operations.
BAF supporters in Miami will be hosting the event “Fun in the Park–Helping the Children of Honduras” at Kennedy Park on August 15, 2009 from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
The event will be a fun-filled and family -friendly day with something to do for everyone while promoting a great cause.
Activities in the event will include: Yoga, Soccer, Volleyball, Football. Water balloons & bounce house for kids!
There will also be cupcakes, cookies, gatorade, ice cream, hot dogs, and snow cones for sale.
There will be a $5 fee to participate in the day’s activities.

Miami Downtown Development Authority and the City of Miami Celebrate the Re-Opening of Paul S. Walker Park 4/28/09

Tuesday, April 28th @ 10:00 a.m.

Miami Downtown Development Authority and the City of Miami Celebrate the Re-Opening of Paul S. Walker Park
Three New ‘Pocket Parks’ Make Downtown More Pedestrian-Friendly and Enhance Livability

image010

WHAT: Miami Downtown Development Authority and the City of Miami hold dedication ceremony in celebration of Downtown’s newest green space, Paul S. Walker Urbanscape.

The re-opening of Paul S. Walker Urbanscape marks the culmination of three new “pocket parks” in Downtown’s Central Business District, which are part of the DDA’s larger beautification program to create a more pedestrian-friendly environment and improve the quality of life in Downtown.

The DDA invested more than $350,000 to restore these parks, introducing approximately 23,000 sq. ft. of green space into Downtown.

Immediately following the dedication, on-site samplings by neighboring restaurants will take place at Paul S. Walker Park. Entertainment and live music performances at each of the three new mini parks will liven up the lunch hour for all to enjoy.

WHO: Remarks will be made by Mayor Manny Diaz, Commissioner Joe Sanchez, Commissioner Marc Sarnoff, City Manager Pete Hernandez, and Miami DDA Executive Director Alyce Robertson, who will all speak to the impact that creating more green spaces will have to enhance the livability in Downtown.

WHEN: Tuesday, April 28th – Dedication Ceremony at Paul S. Walker Urbanscape @ 10 a.m.
Music and entertainment at all three parks until 1:30 p.m. (all within walking distance; map embedded below)

map

WHERE: Paul S. Walker Urbanscape (46 W. Flagler St.)
Thirty years ago, the original park space (named after former DDA board member and community leader) was leased by the City and replaced with a building that since became rundown and dilapidated.

Joan Lehman Sculpture Plaza (Flagler St. at SW 1st Ave)
Previously closed off to the public, the Joan Lehman Sculpture Plaza now features enhanced pedestrian access with park benches, meandering pathways, and newly planted trees.

Robert F. Clark Plaza (NW 1st Avenue and NW 1st Street)
Also once removed from the public right-of-way, this pocket park was restored and enhanced with pedestrian-friendly features.

Kyle Crossland

Kyle CrosslandÕs music has recently been drawing the attention of students from the University of Miami. As a student singer-songwriter from the university, KyleÕs acoustic-rock style has been compared to that of John Mayer and Jack Johnson. His energetic performances and catchy up-beat songs are almost magnetic to whoever happens to be listening. From a young age, Kyle knew that somehow his life needed to incorporate music. He has been singing for as long as he can remember, and growing-up he idolized artists like James Taylor and the Beach Boys. His love for singing brought him to Dr. Phiillips a Magnet High School which focused on choral studies. It was in his junior year of high school when Kyle first picked up a guitar and started writing songs.

The KeyRats, Key Biscayne`s finest
On December 31, 2003, The Keyrats had been commissioned to play for a crowd approaching 1,000 people from the balcony of a Key Biscayne residence overlooking the Miami bay. The performance was a success, and shortly thereafter The Keyrats began receiving phone calls from local promoters interested in booking the band. Since then, The Keyrats have played at multiple popular venues in Miami including Oxygen Lounge, Bolero, Honey, Bayside Hut, Transit Lounge, Flavour, Grove Isle, CefaloÕs and the University of Miami. Other notable venues include Jewells, Boardwalk Tavern, B.E.D., and MiamiÕs Mega Club, Mansion. The Keyrats have evolved into a dynamic four piece band consisting of drums, bass, guitars and two vocalists. On some nights they even feature special guests on the keyboard, timbales, saxophone, and a trombone/Trumpet horn section.

You better check their website for more information

Third time was the charm for North Carolina native Adam Fields at Board Up™ Miami, South Florida’s premiere wakeboard festival April 23-25, 2009 in Miami, FL. In a mild upset with an exciting finish, amid mildly windy condition, Fields bested the final field of 10 professional and amateur riders to win the men’s crown at the fourth annual wakeboard festival. Over 60 amateur riders entered the pro-am competition itching for a chance to take on nearly 20 pro men and women wakeboarders and a chance at a combined prize purse of over $10,000.

An international group of riders that featured three Aussies and two Kiwis (from New Zealand) provided excitement from the preliminaries, including Daniel Watkins, who finished fourth, but closed out his opening round ride with a rail slide along the starting dock, and move that wasn’t scored, but certainly thrilled the crowd.

A crowd of 4,000 witnessed the final runs on both the pro men and pro women side, with the final results featuring Adam Fields as champion in his third appearance at the event defeating Dean Smith (2nd overall), and Jeff Weatherall (3rd overall). On the women’s side, as was expected, it was a case of sibling rivalry, just like tennis has the Williams’ sisters consistently vying for titles, wakeboarding has the Hoffman’s, and at this year’s Board Up™ Miami, big sister Raequel still had a few more tricks than her younger sibling Shawna who finished . Tennessee native Corrie Dyer finished 3rd.

Inclusive of this year’s festival was a nearly 4,000 square foot skate park that featured the Assailant and Amaxon Clothing best trick contest where Miami local D’Andre Pendergrass took home the $500 cash prize.

The festival atmosphere was in full effect with live musical performances by Kyle Crossland, The Key Rats, Streetkind, and headliner Araka, all of whom rocked the crowd. There was certainly some dazzle with two swim suit fashion shows that featured the girls from The House of Jackie Brown, and the girls of microkitten.com, me-ow!

For the participant sporting event enthusiast, Saturday morning kicked off the day with the Nike Swim Miami, an open water swimming competition that had over 700 athletes competing in a 10K (the swim marathon), 5K, and mile swim that saw among others, multiple time USA Olympian and 8-time Olympic medalist Gary Hall Jr compete in the mile. Israeli National Team Member, Michael Demetriev was the overall 10K swim champion in a blazing time of 2 hours and 2 minutes.

For additional information and complete results visit the event website @ www.boardup.net (for wakeboarding) and www.miamisportsinternational.com (for the open water swim)

Annual Redland Riot Road Rallye 1/10/09

Annual Redland Riot Road Rallye
Scheduled For January 10

By Robert A. Burr
I want to bring you up to date on our annual road rallye event scheduled for Saturday, January 10 when we’ll be venturing through the countryside collecting goodies. Load up your car with friends and join us for a unique road rally through Miami’s bountiful countryside.
The Start
We’ll be gathering at Cauley Square, US1 at 224 Street, at 11am Saturday, January 10 to begin our adventure. Each car will receive a free map with driving directions, as well as a set of questions to answer along the way.
Here’s some updates and ideas of what to look for at each stop.
Cauley Square has some new shops, including an aquarium, a store that sells honey and a dog grooming salon. The Tea Room and the Village Chalet restaurants are offering some delicious fare for brunch.
Burr’s Berry Farm is open and the strawberries are delicious, as always. Say hello to my aunt Mary, as well as cousins Kathy and Charles, now back on the farm. The home-made strawberry jam is a great treat, not to mention the ice cream and strawberry milkshakes.
Knaus Berry Farm is baking those sticky cinnamon buns as fast as they can — and barely keeping up with the demand. They have u-pick tomatoes and strawberries out back, as well as the usual assortment of fresh baked breads, pies, cakes and brownies. The organic produce and honey is some of the best around.
The Fruit And Spice Park will be hosting their annual Redland Festival January 10 so expect a great experience when stopping there.
RF Orchids has many great orchids in bloom this season. Get a copy of their book “Robert’s Road” about the history of their family’s orchid business.
Schnebly Redland’s Winery is celebrating their new grand tasting room and visitor’s center, as well as a host of new tropical fruit wines to taste.
Robert Is Here fruit stand is teeming with wonderful seasonal goodies and exotic delicacies, plus those famous milkshakes — with live music out front and their own little zoo out back.
The Redland Hotel, our final stop on the tour, features a great new restaurant. The Redland Steakhouse offers a fine selection of appetizers and dinners, and the bar is well-stocked with libations.
The Finish
We’ll be gathering at the Redland Hotel at 5pm to find out which team has answered the most questions correctly to win the grand prize. Afterwards, you’re invited to join us for dinner at the steakhouse. To be guaranteed a reservation for dinner, call 305-246-1904.

Miami Cyclo cross 1/4/09

Miami Cyclocross
North Miami, FL (Oleta River State Park)
January 4th

www.goneriding.com

On Sunday, January 4th, the 2nd annual Miami Cyclocross race will take place at Oleta River State Park. Cyclo-cross (sometimes cyclocross, CX, CCX, cyclo-X or ‘cross’) is a form of bicycle racing. Races take place typically in the autumn and winter and consists of many laps of a short (2.5–3.5 km or 1.5–2 mile) course featuring pavement, wooded trails, grass, steep hills and obstacles requiring the rider to quickly dismount, carry the bike whilst navigating the obstruction and remount in one motion. It’s part road bike, part mountain bike and part steeplechase.
And it’s exploding in popularity.
It’s cyclocross, and it is becoming one of the fastest-growing sports in the bicycle world.

The Miami race is one of a eight race state wide series and will feature a course that includes asphalt, grass, sand, clay and concrete that will require the racers to dismount a few times per lap in a unique Miami setting. In addition to the serious cyclist categories (Cat 1-5 mens and womens according to USA Cycling rules) there will be races from children 6 years old to grand masters 55+. Although the serious cyclists may have a bicycle specifically for Cyclocross, just about any hybrid, mountain or average road bike will suffice. Racers will be treated to an enthusiastic crowd, lots of ringing cowbells, free Belgian waffles and a fun time overall. Double points in the Florida Cyclocross series.

Food for Life Network (“FFLN”) AIDS Marathon/Half-Marathon 1/25/09

To: Food for Life Network and Care Resource Friends
From: The Williams Family
Re: FFLN AIDS Marathon/Half-Marathon
Good afternoon! My name is Stephanie Williams. I, along with my cousin Sonja Smith and our uncle Lee Williams, hope to get to know all of you in the upcoming months. However, who we are is far less important than why I am writing you today. I wanted to let you know that we have partnered with Care Resource and Food for Life Network to organize and coordinate the first Food for Life Network (“FFLN”) AIDS Marathon/Half-Marathon, which will take place on January 25, 2009, in Miami, Florida. We are reaching out to you because we need your participation and support to make this event a success. Before I tell you how you can help, I would like to take a moment to explain why my family has decided to coordinate the run and why we chose Food for Life Network.

Our uncle was diagnosed HIV+ more than 20 years ago. His life, like many long-time survivors, chronicles not only the emergence of one of the deadliest diseases of modern history but also the world’s response to meet the challenges posed by the disease. His life chronicles treatments, drugs, social and political policies as well as medical breakthroughs that have, in one way or other, impacted the lives of millions of people. His life chronicles a time when many, including some in the medical profession, believed that no cure was possible to now when we know that a cure is within our reach. His life chronicles the laughter as well as the loss of most of his best friends. We have watched our uncle closely during the years, and there were times when, honestly, we expected him to just give up. He didn’t. Instead, he managed to do what seemed impossible: get up the next day and help others less fortunate than him. Therefore, it came as no surprise when he announced earlier this year that he wanted to run not only for those that have passed but also for those who are still with us.

Our uncle was originally registered to train with the National AIDS Marathon Training Program to raise money for a national AIDS organization, but the South Florida arm of the program was cancelled. Two hundred registered participants were left without a trainer or organization. Instead of giving up on the idea altogether, my uncle expressed a desire to finish what he started. Our family decided that the cause was more important than the trainer and that we would do whatever it took to support him. We subsequently learned that had he raised money for the original organization, only fifty percent (50%) of the proceeds would have gone towards the cause. We found that percentage unacceptable. We believe that 100% of the money raised for an organization should go to that organization. Our uncle previously volunteered at FFLN, and he is still impressed by and amazed at how much they do for the South Florida community. For these reasons, we selected FFLN as our fundraising benefactor.

As you probably already know, Food for Life Network is a non-profit organization that provides groceries, meals and nutritional education to eliminate malnutrition and starvation in men, women and children living with HIV/AIDS in Miami-Dade County. They are committed to delivering services with compassion and confidentiality, to fostering client dignity and independence, and to enhancing clients’ quality of life. Since 1987, Food for Life Network volunteers and staff have provided millions of meals and groceries to people living with HIV/AIDS at no cost to their clients but through the generous support of donors. FFLN is a part of Community AIDS Resource, Inc. (aka “Care Resource”).

Care Resource has been providing excellent services to the South Florida community for twenty five (25) years! It is a 501[c](3) non-profit, multi-cultural, community based AIDS service organization, which through education, prevention, research, care & treatment, and support services, Care Resource improves upon the health and overall quality of life of our diverse South Florida communities in need. Rooted in the 1998 merger of Health Crisis Network (1983) and Community Research Initiative (1989), Care Resource is now South Florida’s oldest and largest HIV/AIDS service organization and a true leader in the community.

After meeting with the wonderful and compassionate staff at Care Resource and FFLN, our family is more convinced than ever that we chose the right organization and that our help, along with your help, will make a difference right here in our own community. YOU can help in a number of ways.

FIRST, we need participants who will run (or walk) on January 25, 2009. Each participant will be responsible for raising a minimum of $500.00. We feel this minimal contribution goal is more than reasonable. Our research revealed that many similar fundraisers require participants to raise as much as four times the amount we are requiring.

To get started, go to the Food for Life Network AIDS Marathon webpage and register. Retrieve the FFLN discount code. Next go to ING Miami Marathon website and register for the marathon or half-marathon. Please note that while the ING Miami Marathon registration deadline is January 17, 2009, the FFLN AIDS Marathon REGISTRATION DEADLINE is DECEMBER 23, 2008. Our deadline is set to comply with ING Miami Marathon’s procedures, which require all charities to give them the total number of participants 30 days prior to the event.

Understand that while all participants must register with ING Miami Marathon to participate in the run/walk on January 25, 2009, you are free to train on your own so long as you register with FFLN AIDS Marathon and raise the minimal required amount by January 25, 2009. We have started accepting contributions/donations.

Don’t forget to get your FFLN AIDS Marathon discount code before registering with ING Miami Marathon. Don’t forget the DEADLINE to register is December 23, 2008.

SECOND, you can help by making a personal contribution or raising money on behalf of a participant. We know that our economy is facing huge challenges, and that you may not have as much to spare as you normally would. That’s ok. We are simply asking that you give what you can. Just think about it: If 1,000 people donated as little as $25.00, we could raise $25,000 just from INDIVIDUAL contributions! That’s half of our goal!

Check with your employer to see if they provide incentives for your fundraising efforts (e.g., matching donations). Check with local businesses to see if they would be interested in supporting this cause. You may be a member of a church or other organization that wants to contribute. Also, you can use your social and professional networking forums to raise money. Please tap into all of your networks.

THIRD, you can help by spreading the word. Forward this e-mail or the web link to all of your friends and family. Bike Miami Ciclovía! 11/9/08

Bike Miami Ciclovía!

Downtown Miami closes streets to cars, opens city to Bicyclists and Pedestrians.

This will be Miami’s first Cyclovia. Miami will be closing several downtown streets and part of Brickell and will only allow for cyclists to use them. We’ll be meeting for this at the Government Center. This is an extra-curricular ride, and since roads are closed to cars, you can ride at your own speed and it’s encouraged to meet people. This may take place more in the future, we’re definitely looking forward to this.
Bring as many people as you want, this event will be great.
So the tentative ride is from Flagler St W & 1st Ave by the courthouse to Bayfront, and looping back down Miami Ave to Mary Brickell Village.

Ciclovía (also Ciclovia or Cyclovia) is a Spanish term, meaning “bike path,” used in Latin America to mean either a permanent designated bicycle route or a temporary event closing of the street to automobiles to allow dominance by other users. Permanent designated bicycle lanes are also known as ciclo-rutas, while streets temporarily closed for that purpose are always called ciclovías.
