RA Sushi Celebrates International Sake Day with Hot Sake Deal October 1, 2012 from 11 a.m. to close RA Sushi in South Miami 5829 SW 73rd St. Miami, FL 33143 www.Facebook.com/RASushiSouthMiami
RA Sushi in South Miami is recognizing “Nihonshu no Hi†or International “Sake Dayâ€, an informal holiday created to celebrate the popular Japanese spirit. Nothing pairs better with sushi than sake, and in honor of this special day RA Sushi in South Miami is encouraging guests to explore this lesser known spirit, by enjoying hot sake for only $1 all day.
International Sake Day’s origins are centered around ancient symbols and sake’s brewing season. October is represented in the ancient Chinese zodiac system, also embraced in Japan, by the old character for sake. Conveniently, the same month also represents a beginning in the sake world: the start of a new brewing season, making October 1 the perfect time to celebrate all things sake!
Visit RA Sushi in South Miami on International Sake Day and enjoy $1 hot sake, a savings of $3 from the normal price. Raise a glass and Kampai! to International Sake Day! The offer is valid on October 1 only.

It’s the kind of spot you would want to eat at at least once a week. This is why the offerings are so diverse and plentiful. The Federalists End Miami Spice with an Oom-Pah-Pah Blast for A Federalized Oktoberfest Wednesday, September 26 through Sunday, September 30, 2012 The Federal Food, Drink & Provisions 5132 Biscayne Blvd. Miami, FL 33137
It’s that time of the year again, filled with oompah music, lederhosen and Lots Of Pork and Bier! It’s Oktoberfest!
Although we won’t have the chance to bring folks live oompah music and waitresses clad in dirndls, the Federal will be bringing you a fantastic Oktoberfest lineup of craft beers and one heck of a menu. Oktoberfest conjures images of pork chops, crunchy cracklins, sausages galore and an unmatched praise of the pious pig itself. Sauerkraut, red cabbage, soft glistening pretzels only add to the two-week long bier party.
Bier Party? Why, yes. The Federal will be setting up a Bier Garten up on its deck this week in celebration of the Oktoberfest party that began in 1810 because of the marriage of Princess Therese of Saxony-Hildburgausen. History is all fine and dandy, but really, let’s not lose sight of the beer.
Oktoberfest must have beer, and plenty of it. And so, the Federal is pleased to tap into your inner hog and bring loyal Federalists a Federalized Oktoberfest menu and a selection of German style biers to close the Miami Spice season that coincidentally toasts the Princess, the Bavarian harvest, the Pious Pig and the hopes of cooler Miami weather.

If the aroma doesn’t convince you, the gentle roar of the pre-WWII Probat Perfekt Roaster will — Panther stands for Coffee. Period. And its mission is evident in everything husband-and-wife team Joel Pollock and Leticia Ramos Pollock put into their place.
To begin with, every cup of coffee Panther serves is roasted on site, in small batches, each of which have their origin in farms personally-selected by the Pollocks for taste as well as and individuality. Both Joel and Leticia benefit from longstanding relationships with coffee producers throughout the world, and these friends and colleagues not only possess generations of knowledge and passion, but they produce some of the finest lots of coffee available anywhere.
After the selection of green coffee beans (using a professional technique known as “cuppingâ€), Joel uses his 20 years of experience to roast them, achieving correct development and caramelization of the sugars present within the coffee bean, without the conversion of these precious caramelized sugars into carbon, which can result in an ashy or smoky taste. Great care is taken to expose the magnificent natural sweetness and the most subtle flavor nuances often lost in the roasting process.

Furthermore, Panther fields a team of extensively- and continuously-trained baristas to showcase these wonderful coffees and the people behind them.
There’s good reason why Panther has become the go-to spot in Miami, and why its coffees and expertise are now being implemented from here to New York City; that’s because a Panther cup of coffee is just how great coffee is meant to be enjoyed.

Shapira’s work challenges contemporaries to celebrate today’s cubist problem—the urgent need to know all you are not seeing, be simultaneously inside and outside, in history and the present. A first-generation American, Shapira is a rising artist exhibited among international museums and private collections. He lived and drew with Aboriginal Australians over three years, lectured at Harvard, The Royal College of Art, University of Sydney, and received the Daler-Rowney Prize for Drawing and Blanche E. Colman Award for Painting.
Aithan Shapira currently lives and works in Portland, OR and is represented there byFroelick Gallery.
South Beach will never cease to attract South Florida’s artistas, fashionistas, film buffs, and foodies, but it’s nice to see that Miami is growing up and offering a variety of neighborhoods for those who seek out culture…and great food. These days Americans and Miamians are thinking about about food in ways previously unimagined, and any new ‘hood or district that plans on attracting Miami’s culture-seekers are almost compelled to offer good places to eat. Wynwood Arts District has already been drawing in locals and tourists, alike, for years with its rows of contemporary art galleries amid a gritty grid of warehouses that manages to retain a somewhat edgy, young, and pre-gentrified vibe. Previously devoid of even a place to grab a cup of coffee, Wynwood now offers two independent (and very good) coffee bars, several watering holes, and a handful of good eateries like Wynwood Kitchen & Bar.
Having debuted during Art Basel 2010, Wynwood Kitchen & Bar quickly became the place to dine while visiting the galleries in Miami’s arts district. The restaurant’s doors are located right next to the famous Wynwood Walls – a collection of murals and courtyards that is better experienced than explained – and the restaurant’s exteriors, including its al fresco dining, seem to be halfway incorporated into the art installation. Even graffiti artist Shepard Fairey’s politically-charged black, red, and white murals that occupy a full “Wynwood wall†are reiterated inside the restaurant’s bar, which is plastered with the artist’s signature posters. Wynwood Kitchen & Bar feels as if it is part of Wynwood and was born out of the creative energy that hums throughout the entire district, rather than being a restaurant that was just plopped into a row of art galleries.
Executive Chef Miguel Aguilar’s cuisine also feels like something that would just come organically out of Miami – a sophisticated menu with an emphasis on small plates that is heavily influenced by Miami’s very Latin culture. Dishes like ropa vieja empanadas, queso frito, and black bean soup ring familiar with many Miami natives, and ingredients like Manchego cheese, piquillo peppers, tomatillo, and ajà amarillo demonstrate that Chef Aguilar has taken on a pan-Latino approach to his cuisine utilizing ingredients from throughout the Spanish speaking world. The restaurant has recently introduced several new additions to the menu that continue with the global Latino trend, as well as a cocktail list inspired by the many artists whose work graces the walls of Wynwood Kitchen & Bar.
For those who are always on the lookout for interesting cocktails, the artist-inspired cocktail menu offers a selection of libations that are each more intriguing than the other. The Shepard Fairey, a perfectly refreshing choice for the Pisco lover, consists of Pisco Porton, St. Germain, simple syrup, pineapple, and lime mint (a citrusy variety of the herb). The Nunca offers a bit more of a bite from the inclusion of grapefruit juice and Campari to a concoction of Absolut Ruby Red vodka and yuzu. Perhaps the most interesting cocktail that I sampled from Wynwood Kitchen & Bar’s menu is the Barry McGee, containing Bluecoat gin, hibiscus syrup, basil, lemon juice, and soda. The juniper quality of the gin plays very well with the anisette-like basil and tart, floral notes of the hibiscus, while the splash of soda water makes the whole cocktail positively refreshing and ideal for a summer evening.
New desserts at Wynwood Kitchen & Bar can be quite decadent, such as a molten chocolate cake served inside a ramekin and intensely flavored with ancho chile and Mexican cinnamon with a scoop of vanilla ice cream to cut the richness. However, a Latin variation on a tiramisù, aptly called a Latin Misu, is surprisingly light in spite of how heavy it sounds: tres leches, espresso-soaked lady fingers, and lightly torched Italian meringue topping. A white chocolate bread pudding offers a perfect balance between firm and custardy, has a great variation of texture from soft to slightly chewy, and is topped with a lightly tangy guava sauce that pairs so wonderfully with the rest of the dessert.

New Year’s Eve 2010 I went to see Cirque du Soleil’s Kooza in downtown Miami. A few days later I was trolling around on Twitter and met my friend Ofelia over some of her photos of the event. We have other things in common, but our love of Cirque du Soleil still rides high in the book.
So when we saw that the Circus was coming to Bank Atlantic Center a few months ago, we coordinated to go with our families on the same day, and as it turned out, she and her husband and son were even seated in the same section as my wife and me. Yes, of course we started the afternoon off with an awesome meal at the Grand Lux Cafe at Sawgrass Mills Mall. Guess what? All Hispanics aren’t fashionably late, despite what you might have heard. And the mega rain was truly an excuse this time, not needed.
Anyway, I know this is about the show, but let me give a thumbs up for the restaurant. The reservation for 4 I gave yesterday was an unplanned test when I showed with 5 today. Way to handle it perfectly! My BBQ Baby Back Ribs were spectacular. And that creative slaw, fries and corn bread you baked were fabulous. Everyone else loved their food too! Thank you for not bitching or rolling your eyes when I asked you to split the already un-split check. I will be back! And I digged the dressy gators out front of the restaurant.
Bank Atlantic Center. Premium parking is a rip! For $45 I’d arrive in a limo with a hooker the escort we saw some fat dude with. Well even the $20 basic parking was a rip-off, but it was raining hard. Thank God, NO RED. I’m a Flyers fan. Our friend’s son had to chug his Gatorade or dump it before passing security. Jeez. Oh, now I see why? Gatorades are $5 yet still better priced than the $9 Heineken pounders. I bought nothing inside. My wife decided she needed a $5 coffee, but OK, nothing.
The show started promptly, as usual, with the Clowns joking around with the audience. Pretty standard, comic relief, and lots of laughs. (Do they do that in other cities or just in Miami where inconsiderate people show up to a professional show 20-30 minutes late? This isn’t a little league game). They also of course picked out one unsuspecting dude from the audience to get picked on. Very good sport.
The first half of the show was a little slow to be honest. Obviously the skills were difficult for every event, but Cirque has a very high standard to reach for the guy who’s seen a lot of them. Other audience members agreed. I overheard at least 3 or 4 dudes in the enormous dude restroom line say the same thing. Best part was the trampoline act where two guys and two gals took turns flipping off the roof of a house, running up walls, narrowly missing each other, back and forth drama. All the while, a woman sang in the middle of them on a balcony. Great choreography, no collisions, really cool.
The juggler had a rough day today. He started off with some sweet moves, rolling the balls around his body. He did some kind of ball break-dance with his arms and hands, also very cool. He had an assistant giving balls from a rope high above him. What more could a guy want? But his finale, 8 balls, didn’t go awesomely. His first try was the best but he didn’t complete the routine. Three tries. Honestly, I felt the task was impossible, but then again I drink beer and cognac and don’t juggle. Was a strong routine, regardless!
The first half also sported lots of double-people dragons, which I’m sure took enormous coordination. Big pole balancing guys. There was a guy in an egg that did some rotations around and around, but I think we were expecting fast and not precise muscle moves. And some chick a few rows behind me almost got in deep doo-doo for turning on her cell phone camera toward the end. Jeez, some people.
After intermission, I could feel the people asking for high-energy entries. I felt the second half started slow as well. While I think the lady twirling on the blue curtains was very talented and ballsy, the segment went way too long. But I thought the Yo-yo chicks were absolutely terrific throwing yo-yos into the air, catching them, and a zillion other really cool tricks. High energy, big smiles, and a really amazing performance. My wife and I thought that one was great!
Let’s talk about the clowns. They were entertaining. No doubt, despite their French chatter. And I loved their parody and mocking of all the other performers in one particular skit they did. Was great. Even the “audience member” that we chatted about earlier finally was identified as part of the cast, a clown, yep. And he was so believable at “Average Joe” too! But in the end, the clowns were too much of the show, seriously.
Other favorites from the second half included the “Diving Through Rings” acrobats, very entertaining. And the finale, the Jump Rope dudes, amazing coordination, strength and timing.
Everyone loved the music and the band was introduced during the show as well. Love that they had their “pit” below the house and you could see them and lights from there throughout the show. The singers were great as usual, no doubt about it.
Overall impression: I really enjoyed myself. There is nothing like Cirque du Soleil. There are many other shows I’ve seen that I loved, while this one was just comme ci, comme ça. Happy I went. Merci for reading.

Beloved Burger, Hot Dog and Frozen Custard Stand Opens Second Miami Location
Danny Meyer’s Union Square Hospitality Group (USHG) is excited to bring its second Shake Shack to the Sunshine State. The new Coral Gables Shake Shack is just a burger’s throw from the University of Miami.
Born in New York City in 2004, Shake Shack opened its first Miami location in June 2010 at 1111 Lincoln Road in South Beach and quickly became a favorite among both locals and tourists, receiving a three-star review in the Miami Herald. A vibrant community gathering spot, Shake Shack is a modern day “roadside†burger stand known for its delicious burgers, flat-top dogs, frozen custard, beer, wine and more.
The new Coral Gables location is constructed with recycled and sustainable materials, wherever possible. It features tabletops sourced from reclaimed bowling alley lanes handcrafted in Brooklyn, NY, and wooden counter seating made from reclaimed river cypress. In addition, energy-efficient kitchen equipment and LED lighting are employed throughout the space.
“We were drawn to the charm of Coral Gables and its deep sense of community,†said Randy Garutti, Shake Shack CEO. “We are also thrilled to be located so close to the University of Miami. We hope this Shack will be a fun and lively experience that will be enjoyed by Gables locals and students alike.â€
The Coral Gables menu includes all the Shake Shack classics, as well as a scrumptious new burger that rolled out at other locations over the past month. The SmokeShackâ„¢ is a cheeseburger topped with Niman Ranch all-natural applewood smoked bacon, chopped cherry pepper and ShackSauce.
As is the case with all Shake Shacks, the frozen custard “concrete†selections were created specifically for the Coral Gables Shack, with names that are a playful nod to the surrounding community. ‘Canes fans can rally their next ice cream craving around The “U†Malt (chocolate custard, fudge sauce, chocolate truffle cookie dough and malt). Other Gables-specific concretes include the Coral Crisp (vanilla custard, peanut butter sauce, marshmallow sauce, Valrhona chocolate pearls and crispy crunchies), and the Cookie Cubana (vanilla custard, Cuban-style sugar cookie, salted caramel sauce and banana). In addition, the menu includes a local favorite that debuted at the South Beach Shack, the Key Lime Pie Oh My (vanilla custard blended with a slice of key lime pie from The Sugar Monkey).
As part of its community outreach efforts and mission to “Stand for Something Good,†the Coral Gables Shack is partnering with the Miami Children’s Hospital Foundation – a long-standing relationship that first began with the South Beach Shake Shack. Located in close proximity to the Coral Gables Shack, 5% of sales from the Coral Crisp concrete will benefit the hospital. Plus, Shake Shack staff will visit the hospital on a monthly basis for fun-filled frozen custard socials with patients.

Brooks is excited to open EDGE, a modern take on the steakhouse in Miami on Brickell Avenue. His focus is on farm-to-table prime products, all-natural ingredients and perfect techniques. The better-tasting natural grass-fed beef – from family-owned Creekstone Farms in Arkansas – comes in smaller cuts; the intense heat of the special Infra-red grill it’s cooked on seals in juices and tenderness and creates a fabulous crust on the outside. There’s more meat and less fat to the slow-cooked Berkshire Pork belly from Iowa. As for the seafood, “We go local with mahi, Corvina, wahoo, stone crabs – they’re awesome, the best crabs I’ve ever eaten, and fresh Florida spiny lobster,†explains Brooks. “But we also bring in the best of East Coast seafood,†he says.

The special Nicky’s Week menu, available at RA Sushi in South Miami (5829 SW 73rd St.) includes: Edamame, Tootsy Maki, Shrimp Nigiri, Pork Gyoza, Chicken Yakitori, Garlic Citrus Yellowtail Tapas, plus a variety of select beverages.
All 25 RA Sushi locations in Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Kansas, Maryland, Nevada and Texas will participate in the fundraiser.
Nicky’s Week was developed in memory of St. Jude patient Nicholas “Nicky†Mailliard, of Scottsdale, Ariz., who lost a long battle with brain cancer in February 2005 at the young age of 13. A nephew of one of RA Sushi’s founders, Nicky held a special place in the hearts of RA Sushi associates throughout the organization. RA Sushi initiated the fundraiser to honor the memory of Nicky and to raise awareness and funds for St. Jude, where no child is ever turned away because of a family’s inability to pay for medical treatments.
“RA Sushi is honored to continue to support St. Jude and help them with their life-changing mission, said Scott Kilpatrick, co-founder and vice president of RA Sushi. “We want to help ensure their services remain available to children and families battling serious illness.â€
All donations from the weeklong effort will help support St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, which has treated children from all 50 states and around the world. Known primarily as a cancer research center, St. Jude doctors and researchers also treat children with sickle cell disease and pediatric HIV.
A “RAâ€ckin’ vibe, popular music, and distinctive Japanese fusion cuisine sets RA Sushi Bar Restaurant apart from a typical sushi joint. RA opened its first location in Scottsdale, Ariz. in 1997 and has since expanded to include 25 locations throughout the United States. Consistently awarded for its fresh sushi, creative cocktails, killer happy hour, and musically inspired nightlife, at RA good food and good times go hand-in-hand.
Lunch is served from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily. Dinner is served until 11 p.m. Monday through Wednesday, and until midnight Thursday through Sunday. The bar is open until 1 a.m. or later. Happy Hour food and beverage specials are offered Monday through Saturday, 3 to 7 p.m. RA Sushi’s Flying Fish Lounge is the perfect place to catch some fresh fish and drink specials. This night is inspired by a defined decadent era known for its glamorous clothes, luxuries, hedonistic party culture and excesses. You stepped into a stylish sophisticated night in 1977
The Meatball Joint is opening tomorrow (5/21/12) at the old King Kone on Alton and 15th. We had the opportunity to sample the whole menu tonight.
The menu is pretty much laid out in a build-your-balls way. Get a pen and pick your meatball type (beef, turkey, veggie or a daily special), pick your sauce, and either go naked or choose a vessel from a sammy, slider or a sandwich. You can also add some good stuff on the side like roasted corn polenta, watercress pear salad, garlic bread, grilled veggies, pasta, etc….. Everything is under $10 with the exception of eating 6 sliders at $15. So we tried all the balls – the beef, the turkey and the veggie (which is mostly eggplant and surprisingly delicious). Large tasty balls in flavorful sauces at a terrific price point.
We also ordered dessert. They have apple pie, bread pudding (sold out) and a “make your own” ice cream cookie sandwich. Ours was a giant ball of vanilla ice cream shaped like a meatball in between two chocolate chip cookies! Nom Nom Nom
Chef Giorgio Rapicavoli has accomplised an impressive lot for his young age (26). The passionate Miamian has led at a handful of respected restaurants, rubbed elbows with world-famous chefs, developed fairly profitable hobby at music and art, won a Food Network cooking contest and, most recentrly, is fulfilling his life-long dream of opening his very own dining establishment, eating house.

Michael Pirolo (from Scarpetta) has teamed up w/ The Pubbelly Boys to create this amazing Italian Gastropub.
We were fortunate enough to be their first guests at the new location (old Silvano’s on Alton and 8th) and try some of the dishes from the Pirolo. Needless to say, it is everything you expect… phenomenal Italian cuisine in its simplest form w/ an awesome and unpretentious twist – just like the rest of the Pubbelly cuisine. For example, the “Braised Short Rib Lasagna” sans tomato sauce. A take on a favorite salad,”Broccoli Rabe al Caesar” w/ hard boiled eggs and freshly grated pecorino romano cheese. And “Veal Cheek & Pork Meatballs” w/ baby carrots, tomato sauce and shaved parmigiano that give others balls a run for their money. Check out the pics.
What surprises me more than anything is that I rarely get excited over Italian food and it’s been a few days since we’ve been to Macchialina and I’m still dreaming of those three dishes… I can’t wait to try the whole menu and see what’s in store. Like Diane Keaton says in the Godfather…. “Oh, Michael!!!”

Aventura, FL Register Online
Join Dine Magazine for happy hour at the newly opened Luca Bella restaurant in the space formerly occupied by Chef Allen’s. Luca Bella — the brainchild of owner Mickey Maltese — named the restaurant after his two children, Marcelo Luca and Isabella — and has created a welcoming, family-style Italian restaurant with a modern flair complete with great food, a welcome atmosphere and generous service. Once inside, you will feel like you are family. The interior features an intimate bar area, dimmed lighting, comfortable seating and family pictures line the walls.
While some Italian restaurants are quite ordinary, Luca Bella is anything but .. and once you walk inside and smell the sweet aroma, you will be whisked away to Italy. You will find Chef Luciana Crosa in the kitchen, alongside her mother, sister and brother — making this a true family restaurant. On the menu, you will find classic Italian dishes like Clams Casino, Pasta Fagioli, Meat Lasagna and Chicken Milanese mixed in with Luca Bella’s signature dishes. We loved the Spicy Chicken Isabella (roasted chicken on the bone topped with sauteed cherry peppers, mushrooms, onion and roasted garlic).
Cost: $10 in advance or $15 at the door — This includes one glass of Beringer Reserve Chardonnay or Cabernet and a selection of complimentary hors d’oeuvres.
If the permeating smell of the restaurant isn’t enough to keep patrons safe, repellent Vampire cocktails are available, which include the Baby Prima Martini, Dracula Red Bloody Mary, Vampire Vodka Surprise, and Chef Arturo’s favorite Pinot Noir all priced at $4.19 a glass!
Whether people love it or hate it, the health benefits of eating garlic are now universally hailed. A member of the onion family, garlic has been used throughout recorded history for both culinary and medicinal purposes such as lowering blood cholesterol levels and reducing the buildup of plaque in arteries. It has a characteristic pungent, spicy flavor that mellows and sweetens considerably with cooking.

Ravioli Caprese, Romano crusted ravioli topped with tomatoes, fresh Mozzarella and cilantro pesto drizzle, in an appetizer portion for $5.25. A glass of Parducci’s Sustainable White, $7.95, is the perfect complement.
Mushroom Ravioli, baked in a signature Alfredo sauce and topped with toasted Parmesan bread crumbs and tomatoes, in a lunch portion for $7.70 or in a dinner portion for $8.45. This dish pairs nicely with a glass of Wente Sandstone Merlot for $8.95. Sandstone perfectly balances the heartiness of the mushrooms.
Lobster & Shrimp Ravioli with Crab Insalata, with lemon vinaigrette and a Limoncello butter sauce, in a dinner portion for $9.98. Sketchbook Pinot Noir, $9.95 a glass, offers an off dry, slightly sweet wine that brings out the sweetness in this dish.

Juvia, named after a brazilian nut is Asian / Peruvian fusion on top of the beautiful 1111 Building at the end (or the beginning? lol) of Lincoln Road. The chefs are all top notch and include a Daniel Boulud prodigy, to Sunny Oh from Nobu.
We were greeted by a GM named Jaime  who sat us down and were immediately blown away by the atmosphere. Gorgeous rooftop, 20-25 foot tall organic vertical garden (created by a man from Taiwan that has apparently done wall gardens for Oprah and the Queen). The music was fantastic and we caught ourselves shazaming and purchasing a few tracks throughout the evening. Indoor and outdoor seating with a majestical bar made out of amethyst. Oh and did I mention the view. It’s crazy sick – awe-struck. But I digress… We were served by Matt who took us on a culinary journey while providing great attention and top notch service.
They offer a wonderful cocktail selection. 14 different drinks all made with organic fresh squeezed juices. With that said, we had:
Standout dishes include: Big City Tavern’s Crabcake Eggs Benedict and Banana & Chocolate Chip Pancakes; City Oyster & Sushi Bar’s Lobster & Asparagus Omelet and Biscuits & Gravy; and City Cellar Wine Bar & Grill’s Bistro Steak & Eggs and Caramelized Banana & Crème Brulee Stuffed French Toast.

for Artists……..BY ARTISTS featuring painter Skot Olsen 01/22/2012, 7:00pm until 10:00pm
HaVen Lounge South Beach
1237 Lincoln Road
Miami Beach, Fl 33139
www.havenlounge.com
Join us on Sunday, January 22nd as we present the comprehensive artists program “for artists…..by artist.” The evening will be dedicated to painter: Skot Olsen
Skot Olsen (b. 1969) uses a classical, yet comical, visual style, which he has called “cartoon realism,” to convey complex themes. Each piece is rich with symbolism, no matter whether it is a six foot tall “neo-psychedelic” painting based on the artist’s spiritual experiences with psychedelic plants, or a small format depiction of a ship at sea being taken down by a giant squid.
Through the years, Olsen has become best known for his maritime work, and has received a wide fan base among scientists and others who are interested in the plight of the giant squid. The artist conducts copious research to develop pieces that are historically accurate, and even educational. Inspired by 19th-century maritime artwork and a love for giant squid, Olsen’s maritime themes focus on strange and often perilous encounters humans have with the sea and the things that dwell there.
In 2007, Olsen launched a series of work that is referred to as his “neo-psychedelic” series of paintings. The objective of this work was to create a religious iconography around the use of hallucinogenic plants, depicting saints and apostles who glorify and represent the plants and the states of mind derived from them. Seeing a shift away from conventional religion and more toward an ethnobotanical path to spirituality. Olsen intended to communicate that humans are hard-wired with a need to connect to the eternal, and that the use of such plants/chemicals are a different path leading toward higher states of consciousness, which is also possible through religion or meditation. This body of work was destroyed in a fire while on display at the Harold Golen Gallery in Miami during Art Basel December 2007.
Following the blaze that destroyed two years of his work, Skot Olsen returned to paintings of the sea. Perhaps it was a subconscious way of easing the pain of loss, in the way that a dip in the ocean has the power to heal, both spiritually and physically. The work that ensued in 2008 combined the religious iconography from the “neo-psychedelic” series and Olsen’s earlier work depicting maritime themes. The artist ended the year 2008 with a solo show at The Shooting Gallery in San Francisco. From oceanic disasters to the commercial harvest of sea monsters and Poseidon himself, the show was a demonstration of the will to persevere, create and communicate through painting. Olsen’s current body of work explores propaganda, New World Order, and environmental themes.
Check out Skot Olsens website: www.skotolsen.com
Skot’s art pieces will be displayed on the Digital Art Wall prepared by Haven Technical Director Ricardo Agudelo.

We went to Capital Grille on Brickell for dinner, which was my first time at a Capital Grille. The food was amazing, we started off with the Prosciutto wrapped mozzarella with vine ripe tomato with a balsamic glaze.  For the main course I got the lamb Chops and they were cooked to perfection and tasted amazing. James ordered the Porcini rubbed with 12 year aged balsamic which I have to say was one of the best steaks I have ever had.  To go with the main course we ordered the creamed corn and with smoked bacon and the fresh mozzarella , tomato & basil salad with 12 year aged balsamic. For dessert we had the cheesecake with fresh seasoned berries and the key lime pie both were so good.  The whole meal was amazing, everything was cooked perfectly, displayed beautifully and served from an awesome staff.
Some of their signature items are Pan Fried Calamari with Hot Cherry Peppers, Bone-In Kona Crested Sirloin with Caramelized Shallot Butter and Flourless Chocolate Espresso Cake.
