Walk This Way creator, King S. Jewell, founder of Sneaker Shootout and Self-Proclaimed Sneaker Gawd conceptualized this unique idea of highlighting and celebrating contestants to pay homage to sneaker enthusiasts like himself.

Miami’s canine community and their two-legged friends are taking over the Lincoln Road District. Unleash Your Love #onLincoln, produced by the Lincoln Road Business Improvement District (BID) and Doggy Fest, is a free event that will feature fun activities and activations taking place on Sunday, April 10th from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The day-long event is the first of its kind in Miami Beach and will feature a Doggie Fun Zone, canine obstacle course, owner and dog look-alike contest, dog fashion show hosted by the G-Girls, training demonstration, live music and entertainment, vendor marketplace and more! The Miami Beach Police Department will also conduct a K9 demonstration. Don’t have a pooch yet? Pet adoptions and rescue opportunities will also be available for a chance to make a new furry best friend. The event is presented by the Lincoln Road BID in collaboration with Duquesa Promotions.

History Fort Lauderdale, proud steward of our community’s past by making our heritage accessible and engaging to residents and visitors, will feature writer Arthur Jay Marcus on the next May 13 noon segment of its “Meet the Author” interactive Zoom series. The new free series takes place on the second Thursday of each month. Viewers may register at http://bit.ly/HFLMeetTheAuthorMarcus.

Arthur Jay Marcus, an architect, photographer and historic preservation consultant, is the author of The Architecture of Whimsy: Mid-20th-Century Architecture in South Florida, a lexicon examining the quixotic architectural expressions fund on select Mid-20th-Century Modern commercial buildings in South Florida. Showcasing the work of 13 noted architects from Miami Beach to Fort Lauderdale, it highlights the decorative details and gestures – swooping overhangs, brise soleil, cheese holes and arches and screening – that expressed the era’s shiny optimism and the region’s carefree resort culture. With brief biographies of architects and street maps pinpointing the location of each building, this book offers tourists, architects, history buffs and preservationist a new context and appreciation for these works of art, many of which are endangered. The book is available on Amazon.

Architecture and photography have been Marcus’ life-long passions from an early age. While maintaining an architectural studio in South Beach for 24 years prior to moving to Fort Lauderdale about six years ago, Marcus continued to take photographs of the south Florida architectural environment. His practice currently specializes in historic preservation consulting. A native of Philadelphia, Marcus graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Temple University and a Master of Architecture degree from Carnegie Mellon University.

Marcus joins historian John Bailey, plus authors Kingsley Guy and Donn R. Colee, Jr. as part of History Fort Lauderdale’s prestigious “Meet the Author” series, a chance to converse with South Florida-based writers, launched in February. Upcoming novelists will be announced.

History Fort Lauderdale is currently open seven days a week, from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m., with docent guided tours, daily, at 1, 2 and 3 p.m. Group walking tours are available upon special request. Admission is $15 for adults; $12 for seniors and $7 for students (through age 22 with a valid student ID). Admission is free for members, military and children ages six and under. Tickets are available online at HistoryFortLauderdaleTickets.

In compliance with local and state health guidelines, visitors to History Fort Lauderdale will be required to wear a mask, have a digital temperature reading and practice safe social distancing of six feet apart. Hand sanitizer will be available at the front desk admission point and all surfaces will be thoroughly cleaned multiple times a day, per CDC guidelines. Additionally, guests will be asked to sign-in, daily, for contact tracing.

Chef Stephen Puhr discovered his unshakable passion for cooking and warm hospitality at the tender age of 15 while working in a small pizzeria on the south side of Chicago. As a graduate of Chicago’s Le Cordon Bleu, Puhr landed his first position as executive chef for Redstone American Grill at the age of 26. Puhr went on to serve as the Luxury Suite chef for the Utah Jazz, as well as lending his talents to the 2002 Winter Olympics. In 2012, Puhr joined the Cooper’s Hawk Winery & Restaurants team, where, today, his role as senior area culinary operations manager has him overseeing scratch kitchens at 10 Cooper’s Hawk locations.

Launched last year during the COVID-19 quarantine, Cooking with The Galleria has successfully entertained hundreds of thousands in the local community. Cooper’s Hawk Winery & Restaurants is the newest tasteful addition to the series. West Palm Beach resident and NBC’s The Voice former contestant Laura Vivas will headline the next Happy Hour with The Galleria, The Galleria at Fort Lauderdale’s free virtual music series, on Thursday, September 24, at 5 p.m., on Facebook Live.

Laura Vivas’ blind audition on NBC’s hit show The Voice, Season 3, resulted in a spot on Christina Aguilera’s team. A native of Puerto Rico, Vivas’ career began at age 18 singing back-up for local artists. Since 2007, she has been the lead singer and the lone female in a six-piece South Florida cover band called Re-Mix. She has opened for artists such as Roberta Flack, Chaka Khan, Bruce Hornsby and more.

Stage Mother, a new comedy-drama starring Oscar-nominated Jacki Weaver (Silver Linings Playbook, Animal Kingdom), Adrian Grenier (Entourage, The Devil Wears Prada) and Emmy-Nominated Lucy Liu (Charlie’s Angels, Elementary, Ally McBeal), will kick-off the 22nd edition of the OUTshine LGBTQ+ Film Festival on Thursday, August 20, at 7 p.m. This special OUTshine Opening Night Drive-OUT preview at Dezerland Drive-In in North Miami (the film will be released to the public on August 21) will launch a celebration of diversity and equality with 80 thought-provoking films from 20 countries, (many never-seen-before and not available on any streaming platform) accessible via 44 screenings available from August 20 – 30, 2020. Stage Mother tells the story of Maybelline (Jacki Weaver), a conservative Texas church-choir director who inherits her recently deceased son’s drag club. She surprises her closed-minded husband and everyone else she knows by moving alone to San Francisco to save the club from bankruptcy. In this raucous, racy new environment, she begins to open-up and finds new meaning for her life, even becoming a mother-figure to the club’s flamboyant performers. In addition to Adrian Grenier and Lucy Liu, the film also stars, Mya Taylor (Tangerine) and the legendary Jackie Beat.

The 22nd edition of the OUTshine LGBTQ+ Film Festival, a bi-annual film festival whose mission is to unite the community through social events and LGBTQ+ media that inspire, entertain, and educate, is going virtual! For the first time in the organization’s history, 80 new contemplative, comedic and creative films from 20 countries, (many never-seen-before and not available on any streaming platform) with 44 screenings will be made available to viewers throughout the state of Florida from August 20 – 30, 2020. The festival will also host livestreamed special events with cocktail happy hours, talent and Q & A sessions as a way to virtually tie the community together.

Born in Trinidad & Tobago, raised in Venezuela and living in the United States since 2004, Manny Diquez is a versatile musical artist who has recorded more than 30 albums, many in both Spanish and English. Lips, the ultimate in drag dining, is excited to welcome the community back to the perfect place for any celebration when it officially reopens at 7 p.m. on Thursday, June 25, in compliance with local and state COVID 19 guidelines. In the tradition of Lips, the incredible cast will sashay on stage, deliver delicious dining options and pour signature drinks from Thursday through Saturday nights and for Sunday Brunch, until further notice. Sales from the reopening night will benefit all Lips employees as they make their glamorous return.

Other theme nights include Game Night (Tuesday), Twisted Broadway (Wednesday), Glitz & Glam (Friday and Saturday), “Dinner with the Divas” (Thursday and Sunday) and Lips’ drag-a-licious Gospel Brunch (Sunday).

The Galleria at Fort Lauderdale, recognized as Broward County’s premier shopping destination, has announced emerging songstress Carly Jo Jackson as its next featured performer on Happy Hour with The Galleria, a virtual music series, scheduled for Thursday, June 4, at 5 p.m. on Facebook Live.

With a voice filled with grit and soul, Carly Jo Jackson brings the heat of the Florida sunshine to all she does. She has a vocal tone that is as infectious as her charismatic stage presence. She caught the attention of some big names in the music and entertainment business, opening shows for Michael McDonald (who also provided vocals on her recent EP), Kenny Loggins and Dennis Quaid and serving as a musical inspiration to Jeff Bridges who recently featured her on his Sleep Club website. Other notable performances include her 2014 appearance on America’s Got Talent, where she appeared in two televised episodes and advanced to Judgement Week; performing as an Emerging Artist at 2018’s Summerfest; singing backup vocals to Kenny Loggins at 2019’s Hawaii Songwriters Festival; performing at the renowned 30A Songwriters Festival along with Jason Isbell, Brandi Carlile, Shawn Mullins, Livingston Taylor and more; opening a San Francisco 49ers game; and winning the 2015 Belk Southern Musician Showcase.
