Craft beer lovers know that Grovetoberfest is a fun way to do some serious beer tasting of over 300 craft beers from around the world. This year, Grovetoberfest will move slightly South to Miami Marine Stadium; a move geared towards allowing more people to experience Florida’s largest beer festival. In addition, it has upped the ante by bringing a beer connoisseur on board who has been hand-selecting some of the rarest beers available for this year’s festival.
“We’re overflowing with good news. In our new home, Grovetoberfest will continue to offer local favorites and mainstream craft beers, but with a renewed focus on elite craft beers. We are working directly with the brewers to secure and reserve batches of incredibly esoteric and unique brews,†says Tony Albelo, organizer and chief sample taster for Grovetoberfest. This year, Blackberry Farms Brewery will be pouring in the VIP area. Civil Society Brewing will also be pouring at the event, making this the first time they’ve ever poured at a Miami-Dade beer fest. In addition, for the first time ever, Grovetoberfest will be pouring Prairie, Crooked Stave, To Øl, Mikkeller, and Slim Pickins. Aficionados will delight in sampling beers in the Sunshine State-of-Mind, a collection of over 40 Florida breweries including Wynwood Brewing Company, J. Wakefield Brewing, MIA Brewing, Funky Buddha, Saltwater, Banging Banjos, Due South and Biscayne Brewing, to name a few.
The new location allows for more room and easier parking. Other aspects of the festival include the VIP Lounge, which will be hosted by Chef M from Latin House Grill. In addition, it will offer certain perks not available to the general ticket holder such as specialty brews, covered seating area and air-conditioned bathrooms. Join SFLHops as we host LINCOLN’S BEARD BREWING COMPANY’S third bottle share. This is your opportunity to come check out this new, massive brewery. If you would like to participate then you agree to (1) bring at least two good, quality bottles of beer*, (2) purchase at least a beer from Lincoln’s Beard Brewing, and (3) relax, let the bottles be opened orderly by one or two people only.
For the novices, bringing a good bottle means NOT bringing anything found at grocery stores. If you go to a liquor store then be sure to purchase bottles from the special release or seasonal section. Your best bet is to bring a beer that has been specially released from a brewery These are just some examples. If you are a beer trader then we know you’re coming with some awesome beers from other states.

This past Tuesday, hundreds of Foodies stormed the Southern tip of South Beach looking to experience the ultimate gastronomic crawl…and my oh my!!!… did they ever!!!
La crème de la crème of the world-class restaurants in the South of Fifth neighborhood rolled out their red carpets and proceeded to showcase their greatest hits to welcome the participants of South of Spice.
Only in its second year, South of Spice is quickly becoming the “must do†event for all foodies in the South Florida area. Its popularity can be attributed to three factors: affordability, quality and execution. Where else can you experience eight Top-Tier restaurants for $45.00?
Now, this is not a one meal, one dish type of set-up. We are talking about an unending parade of samples of the best each restaurant has to offer. You can eat as much as you want. Each restaurant also included complimentary beverages to accompany the samples. We are talking from a wonderful Sterling Vineyards Merlot at Red, The Steakhouse to Caipirinhas at Fogo de Chão.
As if the price and the quality weren’t enough, there are motor coaches, provided by miRide, on constant rotation to effortlessly chauffeur you from doorstep to doorstep. You don’t have to walk if you don’t want to but after several waves of delicious samples, a little walking helps.
Another good thing about the event is that South of Spice benefits the CI Foundation and their community initiative Eat Smart, which finds a balance between battling childhood hunger and providing healthy meals to promote youth nutrition.
It’s the season of green! Come celebrate summer with us and learn how to make your thumb a little greener with this succulents and terrariums workshop. Enjoy the release of Que Quat, a Kumquat Berliner Weisse and winner of Concrete Beach’s last What Brews You contest, submitted by Will Isaacson. Que Quat is a Florida take on a German tradition. Berliner Weisse beers are refreshing and tart, from the influence of lactobacillus during fermentation. This beer will touch on those points with the addition of the delicious overtone of kumquat. Beer lovers in Germany often add flavored syrups to this style of beer to balance the flavor. Concrete Beach Brewery will feature a syrup bar with two kegs of regular Berliner Weisse, so guests can mix and match to suit their tastes. The event will also celebrate the kick-off of the next What Brews You? contest, which begins on February 1st.
Concrete Beach Brewery kicks off this new monthly feature in which a member of the brewing team jumps behind the bar to pour pints and answer your questions. It’s a fun and informal way to learn about beer and to meet the people whose passion goes into every pint. The series kicks off with Head Brewer Chris McGrath.

Hundreds of foodies, wine aficionados and just plain good times seekers braved the elements this past Saturday to enjoy The 6th Edition of the Coral Gables Food Wine & Spirits Festival. The downpour did not dampen the spirit (no pun intended) of festival patrons, who came prepared with umbrellas, ponchos or anything that could shelter them from the rain.
Once under the tents, the attendees were able to enjoy from a variety of more than three hundred different brands of libations; there was Rum, Wine, Tequila, Beer and even water, organized into five separate pavilions.
There were ten different food stations. Each station offered two to three different types of food. For example: Station #1 offered Japanese, Station #2 was Greek and so on.
On Sunday at The Lincoln Motor Company display, attendees took part in a unique test drive experience of its new line of vehicles, including the all-new Lincoln MKX. Participating guests received a luxury gift.
The MKX has one of the smoothest ride of any vehicle I have ever driven. You have to try it!

Hundreds of Foodies gathered in South Beach to experience one of the most important events of the 2015 gastronomic season: The South Beach Seafood Festival Chef Showdown Competition.

For the third year in a row, event organizers brought together an array of seafood vendors offering bushels of shrimp, oysters, crawfish, lobster, stone crab, fish and clams prepared in a variety of ways.
The well known Casablanca Fish Market overflowed with fish from around the world that folks were able to select, purchase and take home after they had their fill at the festival. The Kitchen Lab featured cooking demos by popular South Florida restaurants.
The event was very family oriented. Children played inside the inflatable pirate village in the Family Fun Zone. There was also VIP Island for those who preferred a more exclusive experience.
As if all this wasn’t enough, the afternoon had a constant stream of live music including calypso, steel drum, island escapism and reggae. The Festival also featured several nautically themed exhibitors showcasing art, jewelry and home decor.
The folks at SWARM have definitely put together another winner!…We can’t wait to be back next year!

One of the most interesting, refreshing and informative ways to spend an afternoon in Miami Beach is to take an Art Deco Cocktail Tour. As the name implies, you will be walking around the Art Deco gems of South Beach while stopping at a few of them to enjoy a libation.
Recently, Christine Michaels of Art Deco Tours invited a group of bloggers to participate in the experience. We all gathered at the Z Ocean Hotel where Christine immediately made us feel welcomed, she introduced us to James Cubby who would serve as our guide along with Christine.
It was an amazing experience!
Even if you’ve been in Miami most of your life (such as myself) the Art Deco Cocktail Tour is a wonderful way to get re-acquainted with Miami Beach’s wonderful history and architecture, not to mention the depth of information that can only be acquired from seeing and walking through these magnificent masterpieces. Just take the tour…you won’t regret it.

It is five minutes before noon on a on a hot and humid Saturday and while storm clouds are looming to the west, Gace Della is standing at the entrance of the Wynnwood Walls talking to a tourist-looking gentleman. She is easy to spot, she is dressed all in black and wearing a Miami Culinary Tours sign. I tell her who I am and she tells me to wait by the elephant mural “…we will start exactly at 12:00…almost everyone is hereâ€.
“Everyone†is an eclectic group of South Florida bloggers (from foodies to lifestyle, fashion, beauty and everything in between) gathered by Paola Mendez, creator of the South Florida Bloggers Meetup Group and invited to experience the WynwwodTour edition of Miami Culinary Tours.
At 12:00:49 P.M. Grace Della begins the tour. Her passion and depth of knowledge immediately come to the forefront. Her delivery is fast, articulate and enthusiastic. She prepares us for our first stop on the tour: Wynwood Kitchen & Bar.
Wynwood Kitchen & Bar has outdoor seating but it is 92 degrees outside with like 90% humidity and on top of that it looks like a storm is coming. We opt to sit indoors. Wise choice, it is cool and comfortable, they have a large table set up for us and a great IPA beer at each spot waiting to be sampled. They read my mind.
Grace explains about Executive Chef Miguel Aguilar’s Nuevo Cuisine philosophy and goes on to describe what’s in our plate: Chicken Empanada, Cheese Tequeño and Sweet Plantains with Queso Fresco. Very well prepared and exquisitely interpreted Latin street food. An excellent appetizer, it gets me in the right mood. By this time I was ready to keep on eating but there is an art component to the Wynwood Tour and since the menacing storm has not fully materialized we head to the Walls.
I did mention Grace’s knowledge about the art on the Wynwood Walls but it is her passionate delivery that makes it so exciting to hear about the artists and creators behind the art. I must confess that until that moment I had taken the art on the walls for granted. No more.
After a brief visit through the O. Asciano Art Gallery we are in route to our next stop: The R House.
The R House is either a cool restaurant with great art hanging on the walls or an art gallery with a restaurant inside, either way they serve an excellent red wine and Chef Rocco Carulli’s Short Rib Slider and Tuna Tartare are simply off the charts.
The Tuna Tartare is lightly fried in sesame oil with black and white sesame seeds, a sweet chilli glaze and wasabi cream go on top and it all goes atop a fried wonton crisp. Each dish is great by itself but to taste them together is simply sublime. I could stay here but the tour must go on.
Two very long, humid and hot city blocks later we arrive at Pride and Joy, a barbecue joint.
Pulled Pork Texas Toast with Cole Slaw is served on a simple cardboard tray but as simple as it sounds, it is every bit as good as good can get, they have a variety of sauces to enhance the flavor and the pork is moist and soft. If you are on the mood for barbecue, this is the place.
From Pride and Joy we go across the street to SuViche a sushi, ceviche and pisco bar/restaurant.
At SuViche they serve us ceviche (of course), the traditional Peruvian dish. Each dish at SuViche is prepared individually so some patience is required but the freshness and awesome taste is evident on the plate. If you haven’t had ceviche before this is a good place to try it.
I would advise to take the Wynwood Tour during the cooler months of November through April. If you consider yourself a foodie, the Wynwood Tour is a must but even if you don’t, it is definitely worth it.

This year, the bloggers started the crawl by getting together at BULLA GASTROBARÂ , winner of the 2015 Taste of the Gables Award.
Bulla Gastrobar welcomed us with a choice of white or red Sangrias both of which were full of fruit flavor, talk about the perfect refreshment on a hot Florida June afternoon.
Then the tasting began…
Our sampling menu consisted of:
Salpicón de Mariscos: Grilled octopus, jumbo lump crab meat, shrimp, bell peppers, fresh lemon, oregano and olive oil. This combination of seafood flavors was simply amazing!
Huevos Bulla: Homemade potato chips, Serrano ham and potato foam drizzled with truffle oil. These eggs were just the perfect appetizer.
Bulla Sliders: Homemade garlic herb bread, beef, pork, veal, oyster mushroom patties, piquillo peppers, caramelized onions, crimini port reduction, tetilla cheese, and Portobello fries. This is actually a James Beard Foundation Burger and winner of The Taste of the Gables Award…need we say more?
By this time we were all excited and ready to continue.
Next stop on the list: BRICKTOPS right across the street.
Field Greens Salad: Mixed baby greens, tomatoes, carrots, onions, mushrooms and focaccia croutons with a homemade house vinaigrette.
Hearts of Romaine Caesar: Hearts of Romaine lettuce with grated parmesan and focaccia croutons with homemade Caesar dressing.
The Wedge Salad: Bib lettuce, thick cut bacon, red onion and blue cheese.
Scottish Salmon: Salmon lightly seasoned and simply grilled. So simple and yet so good!
Prime Sirloin Meat Loaf : Meat loaf made from prime sirloin and topped with a chili sauce glaze. Quite possibly the best meat loaf we’ve ever tasted.
Baby Back Ribs: Danish Baby Back Ribs topped with chipotle barbecue sauce. The ten hour slow cooked process is evident in the meat fall off the bone/melt in your mouth texture.
Obba Sandwich: Shrimp tempura, spicy crab salad, avocado and chives with spicy katzu mayo.
Banana Tempura: Batter fried banana.
Then it was on to BOOKS & BOOKS CAFE where they treated us to a delicious
Shrimp Avocado Tartine: Fresh shrimp, avocado, tomato, basil pesto, garlic aioli on grilled Ciabatta. We washed down with a great-bodied Uintaite BaBa Black Lager.
Our last stop was LA TABERNA GIRALDA, a quaint Spanish style tavern. The offerings:
Croquetas Cabrales: Cabrales cheese croquettes.
Chips de Berenjenas y Miel: Eggplant Chips sprinkled with honey.
Perfecto de Solomillo de Cerdo: Roasted pork tenderloin with caramelized onion and aroma of rosemary.
It was a perfect ending to a perfect evening.
Don’t forget that Coral Gables Restaurant Week ends June 28th so you better hurry and try to capitalize on all the wonderful tastes that the City Beautiful has to offer.

About Historic Virginia Key Beach:
2015 marks the 70th year Anniversary of the Historic Virginia Key Beach Park. In the 40’s, 50’s & 60’s Virginia Key Beach located on the island of Virginia Key, was designated as a unique vacation spot strictly for blacks. Located in Dade-County, this beach was the answer (for people of color) to South Florida’s whites-only beaches pre-1960’s Civil Rights. By 1979, Virginia Key Beach had been transferred to the City of Miami and was transformed into park status. Then in 1982 the park closed and was left abandoned until 2008. During the nearly 20 years of abandonment, the Virginia Key Beach Park Trust was formed and the park saw life again! This committee of dedicated people achieved getting the park placed on the National Register of Historic Places and the Florida Historic Marker. This “Paradise Renewed†is also designated as a Historic Site by the Miami Historic & Environmental Preservation Board! Today, Historic Virginia Key Beach Park is an anchor in the rebirth of the beautiful natural island of Virginia Key, “Miami’s Central Parkâ€!

Diego Meraviglia, Vice President and Director of Education of the North American Sommelier Association (NASA) and Gold-Pin Sommelier presents a new, 6 hour course that covers the vast majority of wines produced in the Piemonte region; their typicality, classification, history, characteristics and folklore, as well as notions of traditional food pairings and overview of the entire region itself. Tasting of the most representative wine appellations in Piemonte, alongside some hidden gems, is also included. The course is designed to please both the wine enthusiast and professional.
Although often compared to France’s Burgundy, Piemonte has seemed out of reach for many to grasp and remains shrouded in mystery. Meraviglia aims to “lift some of the fog†(so typical of this land) and provide a comprehensive understanding of the culture, food and, most importantly, the wine.
Some Background Information:
The Italian region of Piemonte is widely considered by the wine community as one of the most prominent, historical, unique and significant wine regions of the world, producing such prized wines as Barolo, Barbaresco, Moscato D’Asti, Gavi and Barbera D’Asti, to name a few. With a 3000+ year history rooted in its ancient Celtic heritage, surrounded by some of the most breathtaking mountains on the planet and with mystical towns as unreachable and untouchable as they are seductive, Piemonte continues to inspire and seduce both the wine world and the culinary world, maintaining its prime position as Italy’s number 1 wine region (right alongside Tuscany).
The course costs $270.00 with all included, and a $50.00 discount is offered to current NASA members. To register, visit: http://www.nasommelier.com/courses/italian-wine-specialist/#miami. For information, call 786.427.9187 or email miami@nasommelier.com

After an unplanned tour of Little Haiti in Miami last night, my wife and I gave in to technology and plugged in the address of The Moore Building in Miami’s Design District into the phone. After all, we didn’t want to be late to the second annual Eats & Beats culinary and musical event taking place from 7:30 until midnight!
Whew! Just made it on time, and someone was nice enough to leave a parking space right in front of the building for us. We met the organizers on the way in and then got started tasting some great dishes, sampling some terrific spirits and cocktails, and being entertained with some great music and ambiance.
The pink lights flashing on the very unique architecture of The Moore Building made me feel like I was back at a club in Paris I visited a few times in the 90’s. Eats & Beats took place on all 4 floors, which each have a 360 degree balcony overlooking the center of the building. Pretty cool!
We met some very nice people, both vendors and other guests alike. If I were forced to pick some favorites, I’d have to choose Chef Adrianne Calvo (who also made a spectacular dessert at the Five Cubed event a few days ago), the food from Segundo Muelle Peruvian Restaurant, Red The Steakhouse, Brother Jimmy’s, and Havana 1957. Oh, and the cupcakes from Ana Paz Cakes and Slice of Art!
And on the spirits side of things, I loved the Zafra rum, both on the rocks and as a cocktail. Not to be outdone were the terrific mojitos that the folks from Nikki Beach were making. Not only did both of those vendors make a great tasting drink, but they went all out with their presentation and overall experience.
IT Espresso Lounge also made a very nice prosecco based drink, quite refreshing. And as the “beer guy,” I have to give a shout out to the only beer vendor there–Modelo! I personally would have like to have seen a few more strong brands, especially considering the emergence of craft beer on the Miami scene. But hey, that’s probably just me.
All the vendors were friendly, knowledgeable, and wanted to share their products with you. And to the army of people that made the event happen, congratulations! Can’t wait for Eats & Beats 2016!

Enjoy!
We had to move on…our next stop was Talavera Cocina Mexicana where they extended out the red carpet for us in typical Mexican hospitality fashion.
At Talavera Mexican Cuisine, the welcome cocktail was Pueblito Viejo: Corzo Reposado tequila, lemon juice, simple syrup, sugar, crushed mint served over ice. It is refreshingly sweet and goes down so easy!. The menu featured an appetizer consisting of Gordita Conchinita Pibil: (pulled pork) in a corn masa tortilla with a dry rub of chiles and spices. The taste of toasted corn of the tortillas combined with the flavor of the tender piglet was so pleasing to the taste buds, add to that the hint of chiles and you have the perfect appetizer.
Next were Enchilada Suizas: pulled white meat chicken inside a corn tortilla with poblano cream sauce and tomatillo salsa, topped with Oaxaca cheese and baked, served with crema Mexicana and cilantro. Hot, chewy, soft and delcious!
For dessert it was Crepas de Cajeta: crepes covered in Cajeta served with walnuts and vanilla ice cream. If you haven’t had this dessert I urge to go to Talavera and try it. You’ll thank me later.
The portions at Talavera were very generous and we were beginning to exhibit signs of food exhaustion but we marched on…
The next one up was Divino Ceviche where they welcomed us with a that typical Peruvian drink known as the Pisco Sour: Pisco, lemon juice, sugar and  angostura bitters topped with a frothy egg white meringue sprinkled with cinnamon…ooh so good…! there were Camote (Sweet Potato) Chips ready to be dipped in Aji Amarillo or Salsa de Huacatay accompanied by Canchas (Roasted Corn).
The hot appetizer consisted of Pulpo (Octopus) in Salsa Anticuchera. The octopus was lightly crunchy with a very pleasing smoky flavor. Â For entree we were served the Trio de Ceviches consisting of Ceviche Tradicional, Â Ceviche Divino (the Chef’s specialty) and Ceviche al Olivo. These Ceviches are made with slices of fresh fish and or whole shrimp marinated lightly in lime juice and seasoned with Peruvian limo chili, fresh cilantro and onion; garnished with sweet potato and choclo (Peruvian giant corn), the Ceviche Divino also has mango and avocado. The ceviche is so good that one of the bloggers proclaimed “the best ceviche she had ever had”, I concur.
For dessert, Mousse de Maracuyá (Passion Fruit) and Mousse de Chirimoya (Custard Apple). These are delicate mousses with a refreshing tropical flavor.
From Divino Ceviche we were on to Tarpon Bend for a glass of prosecco and to sample their Braised Short Rib. These ribs are braised for four hours and they are all flavor.
Finally we ended the crawl at Cibo Wine Bar where they started with a wonderfully soft and fresh Burrata and robust yet light Prosciutto di Parma, followed by Arancini: Rice balls stuffed with ragu and melted mozzarella.
The Grilled Whole Octopus with mixed greens, diced tomatoes drizzled with extra virgin olive oil and lemon juice was amazing!
The Pappardelle with slow cooked lamb ragu covered with pecorino shavings was so delicate and yet robust that it didn’t matter how full I was, I still wanted more.
As if all that wasn’t enough they brought out a Black Tiger Shrimp in a wine garlic tomato sauce that was simply out of this world.
After an incredible twelve different courses, three dessert and five different drinks we were all exhausted, happy and ready to go home. It was an incredible experience!
You are still in time to try out the Gables Restaurant Week Menu but you better hurry because it ends June 29th.
Yesterday evening, the ProChile Trade Commission in Miami hosted a Chilean Wine Seminar and tasting at the Conrad Hotel in Brickell. Chilean Winemaker Santiago Margozzini from Montgras Estates and Master Sommelier Fred Dexheimer conducted an educational presentation titled Chile: Land of Diversity and a Paradise for Viticulture. My wife and I arrived (on time) to a beautifully presented room set up to accommodate 60 or more guests interested in this stop in ProChile’s Chilean Wine Tour.
Santiago went through a slide presentation that highlighted just how diverse a country Chile really is, from the temperature to the rainfall to the geographic landscape to the soil. All of those factors have an extremely important impact on the country’s 16 wine-growing regions. And though diverse, the climate and isolation of the country is ideal for growing grapes. In addition to gentle winters and moderate summers, the lack of phylloxera, hail and bird attacks also contributes to the success of Chile’s growth in wine making over the past several decades. Twenty years ago, there were seven wine regions; today there are 16. Santiago explained that though it took some convincing, the regions are now classified in three groups based on the characteristics of the wines. That was done so wine makers could easily speak about their wines in such a way that would help promote their vineyards in a meaningful way. Those classifications are Costa, Entre Cordilleras, and Andes.
That’s when we began tasting the eight different wines in front of us, each chosen to represent the different viticulture regions of Chile. Santiago and Fred both led the tasting, speaking about the wineries and characteristics of each wine and how it was made. We started with a Sauvignon Blanc from Siegel made in the coastal area of Leyda. It was explained that the cold temperatures from the Pacific Ocean were key to growing this grape to perfection. Sauvignon Blanc is the #1 exported grape variety from Chile.
We were then asked to compare two different coastal Pinot Noirs from Valdivieso and Tabali. While I’m not exactly a wine expert, it was not difficult to see and taste the differences. Fred explained that one of the areas had more variations in temperature and wind than the other. In addition, the soils in the two regions are very different and impart different characteristics to the wines. So same grape but different outcomes.  Pretty cool!
Fred continued “geeking out” on soil as we tried a Cabernet Sauvignon blend from Morande, grown in the “alluvial” soil of Maipo, representative of the foothills of the Andes. We were then given a Cabernet Sauvignon/Malbec blend from Viu Manent which sparked a little comparison to the Malbecs of Argentina. We were told that some of the best Malbecs in the world come from this Chilean region called the Colchagua Valley. However, these wines are very different than what you would find in neighboring Argentina as the climate and soil and age of their vines are not the same.
Finally we arrived to a wine made by Santiago, MontGras Antu Syrah. “This is the best wine of the night, hahaha,” quipped Santiago. He explained this was grown on a famous hill in the volcanic soil of Colchagua and would be classified as an Entre Cordilleras wine. My wife and I actually agreed that the sweet fruity aroma and delicious flavors made this our favorite of the evening. Also from Colchagua, we tasted a Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot blend from Montes. Fred said this is a very well-known wine in the United States.
Our final wine of the seminar was another from MontGras, their Reserva Carmenere. We were told that Carmenere grapes are unique to Chile, though originally a French grape variety that was killed by phylloxera. Apparently, Chilean wine makers thought they were making Merlots though it was discovered that in fact it was a Merlot/Carmenere blend. Today, the best Carmenere wines are grown in sandy soil in a warm and sunny climate that allows the grapes to grow to a very ripe stage. This ensures a wine with round tannins and uniquely spicy characteristics. We liked this wine a lot too.
The evening then shifted to a tasting with many Chilean wineries. We tasted some additional wines and learned about some of the goals that each winery was pursuing. For some, it was just to get their name out in front of importers. We ate some cheese and fruits and hors d’oeuvres and mingled. It was an educational evening and fun to learn about one of Chile’s most important products!

Goose Island Beer Company welcomed hundreds of guests to The Four Seasons Hotel and Cochon 555 this past Sunday afternoon. Cochon 555 is a tour that celebrates the sustainable farming of heritage breed pigs. Five chefs, Five pig breeds, Five wineries. A cooking competition between five local chefs was the centerpiece of the event, but there were plenty of other activities and stations to check out.
My wife and I started with the Goose Island “Goose Nest” where the brewery paired two of its vintage ales with Foie Gras and other Duck items. But the rest of the event was focused on the pigs. Chefs Aaron Brooks, Conor Hanlon, Bradley Herron, Dena Marino and Jose Mendin each made five or six dishes for the guests to try. They were scattered throughout the banquet hall with other areas of interest to visit in between.
One of my personal favorites was “The Perfect Manhattan” station which was serving up terrific cocktails made with Templeton Rye and a few other terrific bourbons. There was a “Pop-Up Butcher Shop” where one of the pigs was butchered in a demonstration benefiting Johnson & Wales University. The butchered pig was sold on the spot. Oh yeah, and before the pig was cut up, the dudes from Miami Ink tattooed it with a Cochon 555 themed piece of art!
A cocktail competition called Punch Kings was another very popular spot. Five drinks using Breckenridge Bourbon were created for everyone to try. There were cheese stations, oysters, killer Prosciutto by Prosciutto di Parma, and several wineries. I did not miss the opportunity to sip on some Four Roses Bourbon either.
In the end, Chef Jose Mendin from Pub Belly prevailed as the winning “Prince of Porc!”

First, we met in Coconut Grove at Lokal for a nice long ride to Funky Buddha Brewery in Oakland Park, Florida. Next stop is M.I.A Brewing, and lastly at Wynwood Brewing. Â Then, we finish off back at Lokal after having worked up a serious appetite from all the beers.
About the breweries on the tour, here’s a description from the Miami Brew Bus website:
FUNKY BUDDHA BREWERY
Founded in 2010, Funky Buddha Brewery began as a brewpub, lounge, and hookah bar in Boca Raton, Florida. Initially brewing on a small, 40-gallon system, the brewpub began creating truly unique culinary-inspired beers, reaching worldwide acclaim such as 27th best brewery in the world according to RateBeer! Three short years later Buddha opened its 20,000 sq ft production brewery in the heart of South Florida, focusing on the continued use of big, bold flavors. You can find their flagships beers Hop Gun IPA and Floridian Hefeweizen on tap at the brewery year-round, and if you’re lucky enough to try a limited release you certainly won’t forget it! No Crusts Peanut Butter & Jelly Brown Ale, Blueberry Cobbler Ale, and Passionfruit Berlinerweiss are a few of our favorites. Just sayin’!
M.I.A. BREWING CO.
A very special part of our tour brings you to M.I.A. Brewing where you will be able to witness a brewery being born! M.I.A. Brewing has begun construction and estimates a January 2014 opening. Although the brewery hasn’t become operational they’ve already made a name for themselves at beer festivals and special events with their flagships Domino Pilsner, Freestyle Wheat Pale Ale, Castaway Kolsche, and the M.I.A. IPA. Yes, there will be beer and yes, hardhats are required!
WYNWOOD BREWING CO.
Miami’s first production brewery recently opened in the heart of the Wynwood Arts District. What used to be a warehouse and manufacturing district, Wynwood is now home to one of the largest street art exhibits in the world. Following the theme of art in beer making it was extremely important for the founders of Wynwood Brewing to be located in this exceptional neighborhood. Brewed with Miami’s hot weather in mind, their flagship beers, Pop’s porter, La Rubia Blond Ale, and Wynwood IPA, are light bodied, and crisp, ah makes us wanna go to the beach!

“As we have seen over the past decade with food, both in our homes and restaurants, people are more aware and concerned with knowing the source of what they consume and how it’s made. The farm-to-table movement is really a nod to old processes, a step back in time,†says Massolo. “With CRAFT, I hope to bridge a similar gap, one that grows the understanding of and appreciation for small batch spirits and beers being made with great care; many, following family recipes, helping revive their surrounding community or following historic and traditional guidelines.†Â
In addition to CRAFT, Massolo has launched Spirited Sirens the blog and Spirited Sirens: A Tasting Event, the latter a series of “offline interactives†geared towards women. Both companies are subsidiaries of her parent company, The Liquid Projects.
The talented Chef Adrianne Calvo compiled quite a delectable feast for all the senses with her legendary Dining in the Dark at the Coral Gables Country Club this past September 20th 2013. She threw an Eyes Wide Shut Masquerade Ball  to benefit the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. The event was adorned and saturated with magnificent ostentatiousness  and scrumptiousness.
Dining in the Dark consisted of a seven course meal where patrons consumed their meal blindfolded. Eating blind amplifies the experience because shutting off one sense accentuates the others and our brain does not prejudge the food based on what we see. Once the food is served, the first step is to touch the food. All dishes had very enticing and interesting textures. We were then instructed to smell the food, which at times was intoxicating in the best way. The mere whiff of the exquisite truffle oil induced a Niagara fall of saliva in our mouths. We have become quite addicted to truffles since this event. Finally, you may taste the food and be marveled by the complex flavors in your mouth. In between the courses, you delighted in sexy sounds like Enigma while enjoying the touch of your dining partner, and fully embarking on and appreciating the entire blind experience.
The event was unique, delightful and delectable. Her fried goat cheese and truffle oil ball were our amaurotic favorite. In addition, to the decadent dinner there was a whole slew of entertainment which included: contortionists, fire dancers, burlesque show (videos below),  live band, body painting, chandelier models, as well as sexy mermaids performing in the pool.

Ok. Sorry. We misunderstood the writing assignment. This invitation is for Locals Only, not Locos Only. Let’s start again.
Craft beer is an amazing world. One that is really driven by the local communities and local breweries. This locally-sourced movement is popular in beer and other culinary fields. We are sure you’ve seen your share of farm-to-table restaurants and ones who will only serve and use local ingredients. In a similar way, local craft beer is all about keeping things close. Although names like Sam Adams, Dogfish Head and Magic Hat are national players, it would have never been possible with the support of their local market and local fan base. It is important to support your local breweries. At this point we have three commercial breweries in Miami-Dade and Broward, Schnebly – Miami Brewing, Wynwood Brewing, and Funky Buddha. There are a few more in the building process like M.I.A. Brewing, Biscayne Bay Brewing, Gravity Brewlab and others too. We also have several brewpubs like the venerable Titanic Brewing, Gordon Biersch, The Abbey and Organic Brewing. We also have, what we like to call, breweries to be. These are groups producing high-quality and innovative beers as they plan their entrance into the marketplace. We have several like Forth Age, Opus Ales, Invasive Species and Midnight City who have really been called into action and providing local craft beer fans with neat and edgy brews. The bottom line is that although we do not have (at this point) a large number of commercial brewing, we do have a strong number of local brewers producing great beers. Come get a sneak peek at what they’ll be pouring at Grovetoberfest at our 7th and final tasting, Locals Only on Monday Oct 7 at The Grove Spot.

When you hear the word SUSHISAMBA, you think of, well, sushi, and perhaps that happy little dance local Brazilian chicas do. But you probably would never envision a savory morning omelette, or a bowl of granola mix with housemade yogurt. That is…until now. SUSHISAMBA has brought it home, and is now offering a variety of sweet and salty favorites for the morning hour. Their breakfast selection is so vast that you will find everything from fruit “batidas†to mouth-watering steak and eggs servings with delicious homemade breads and toasts.
During my visit, I indulged in a little tasting I simply like to call heaven.
The morning began with a sweet watermelon-papaya batida. What I love about these batidas is that you can make your own by choosing the type of water you wish to mix your fruit with, such as coconut or celery water, and adding an enhancer at the end, such as ginger! I enjoyed my watermelon-papaya invention and began the tasting journey to the most delicious breakfast in town. I started with their power breakfast which consists of egg whites, red quinoa hash, Japanese mushrooms and pulled turkey. I know you’re thinking it sounds delicious, and it really was. But don’t get hungry just yet. Immediately after, I was presented with a perfect-sized serving of Sushi Samba’s chorizo dumplings in grilled onions, with avocado and aromatic cilantro puree; another well thought-out combination. The cilantro puree provides a unique aftertaste that compliments the flavors of the grilled onions and avocado quite nicely. Right when I thought my heaven tasting was coming to an end, a surprising serving of chicha morada pancakes with torched bacon and canela butter landed almost in slow motion at my table. I couldn’t keep my eyes off of the colorful texture, and the way it looked so enticing. I was surprised to see chicha morada pancakes on their menu, as chicha morada is a soft drink made of purple corn found in the Andes region of South America. An exotic and pleasant treat, I must say. The journey continued with a classic American breakfast: any style eggs, double-cut bacon, sausages, potato hash, seasonal fruit and toasts; all quite tasty. Moving along (nope, I’m still not finished with my heavenly breakfast), another one of my favorites was the sweet quinoa oatmeal…I won’t tell you about it, you just HAVE to try it. And, lastly, saving my personal best for last, their un-be-lievable Doce de Leite French Toasts served with seasonal fruits and sesame whipped cream. Now do you understand why I died and went to heaven? A new, unique, exemplary breakfast experience unbeknown to you, no more. You simply must try.
SUSHISAMBA is located at 180 Aragon Avenue in Coral Gables, and serves breakfast daily from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m.
Brunch menu is under construction until further notice.
I have always heard of Miami Culinary Tours as lovers of food who are new or old to the area walk to different restaurants to taste a piece of Miami’s gastronomic delights. It was not until recently that I got to join this savory tour that really opened my eyes on Miami and its rich culinary history.
First stop: 660 at the Angler’s- I arrived late at the first stop. The restaurant served fresh ceviche and tiradito. For my fellow walkers, it was a great start as it refreshed them as we walked in the hot Miami sun.
2nd Stop: Bolivar Restaurant. We stopped by this Colombian restaurant where each table in our area already had a Reposo cocktail mixed with Colombian beer and a small plate with one empanada colombiana (a deep fried crunchy corn Colombian patty stuffed with shredded beef and potatoes) and Patacones de Pollo (deep fried green plantains topped with shredded chicken with a hot sauce on the side. The sauce was a little bit too much to handle given that I am Peruvian and thank goodness the cold cocktail made it better. However for my fellow table foodies they preferred to be without it. But it was all good and tasty. Our tour guide Anna explained the various other Colombian cuisines that included la bandeja paisa; a typical fusion cuisine Colombian dish containing an oversized amount of food and the wide variety of ingredients, which prevent it from being served on a single regular plate, so it must be served in a platter or a tray. Yum!
In between some stops our tour guide talk about some of the historic buidings of Miami Beach such as the architecture of the Art Deco Hotel and one of the most famous photographed places in the world, the Versace Mansion while we all cooled off in the shade.
3rd Stop: David’s Cafe. This is one of the famous historic Cuban quick stop in Miami Beach. We were greeted by Pastelitos de Guayaba (Guava Pastries) and the famous Cafecito Cubano (Cuban Coffee). It was delish and for my fellow tour friends who were from Ohio it was nothing that they never tasted before. They never had Cuban coffee therefore it was great to see them enjoying a taste of Miami and Cuban history.
4th Stop: Larios on the Beach. After our tour guide Anna told us the history of Cardozo Hotel and how the Estefan Family built their empire in the culinary world, we strolled to Larios on the Beach Pop Up location inside the Cardozo Hotel. Their old location on the 800 block of Ocean Drive is currently being remodeled. Their smaller but yet popular place still serves the same delicacy. Due to the fact that we were all hot from our walking tour our waiter quickly severed us a tall glass of water while some of the fellow foodies ordered cocktails. A good basket of Cuban flattened bread served out of the oven was also brought to our table. Minutes later a small tasting plate of Ropa Vieja (shredded beef), Platanos Maduros (Sweet plantains), Arroz moro (White rice mixed with black beans) came to our table. Delish! This good serving of food was the highlight of our tour. It was overwhelmed with the array of flavors.
As we were going to our fifth stop, we headed to Deco Drive Cigars where Anna was explaining the history of the store as the Cuban cigar maker was sitting inside near the window for everyone to see how he made the cigars. Some of my fellow friends even went inside to buy them. To cool off from the dreaded heat, the rest of us headed almost next door to the Z hotel as we saw a good game of human chess in a lounge area located directly below the pool. If you look up you can see the pool area where some the kid swimmers said hi to us as they had some fun swimming in the depths of the pool.
5th stop: Jerry’s Famous Deli. Haven’t been here for over 2 years, the place has not changed. Formerly the gay disco nightclub Warsaw Ballroom in the 90’s, this deli came to be one of the famous pit stop for a good deli sandwich or meal. A sweet treat was served to us: Raspberry Rugala which is a delicious Jewish pastry.
6th Stop: Blocks Pizza Deli. Located in Washington Avenue, this small and quaint family-owned pizzeria makes delicious pizzas one “block†at a time. They only allow the freshest ingredients, organic seasonal produce, all natural deli meats sliced before you and homemade sauces to top the delicately baked crust. Other than pizzas, they cover all sorts of other cravings with home baked Blocks Pockets and freshly made Salads that also come in a delicious crispy Pocket. For our group experience the owner himself made the Sun-dried Hippie Block Pocket made out of sun-dried tomatoes, feta cheese, baby Spinach, basil pesto, and Kalamata olives. It’s like eating a pocket sandwich. Delish! All healthy and organic. Just the way I like it.
7th and last stop: Milani Gelateria. We headed to the beautiful and lovely Espanola Way where we strolled through the pedestrian walkway looking at all the quaint restaurants until we hit our last stop of the tour, Milani Gelateria. Authentic Italian Gelato. They showed off their gelato machine that contained the sweet and cool treat featuring a pinwheel of different flavors. OMG! We were all hot and could not wait to try a taste of heaven. I had the tropical gelato and it was sweet and creamy. It was a great ending to a hot day where we all learned great things during the food tour.
All in all, we hit seven stops, tried food from all over the country, mingled with people (mainly tourists) from all over the world, and as a local, I felt like a tourist. What a great afternoon and a great experience! I recommend that you should try it out!

Free Tasting #2: Paleo Aleos Monday, August 12, 6:00pm – 8:00pm
Titanic Restaurant and Brewery
5813 Ponce De Leon Blvd
Coral Gables, Florida 33146
Hipsters today are into all things Paleo. Paleo Diet. Paleo Workout. Paleo Yoga. Paleo Romance. And since our creative team here at Grovetoberfest HQ is quick to jump on all things hip, they came up with Paleo Aleos – our Pale Ale tasting. See the theory behind the whole Paleo craze is that we should do all things like cavemen… ah, sorry – cavepeople. We should eat, drink, exercise as if we had no grocery stores, no cars, no iPads. So what the hell? Let’s drink like cavepeople too. We realize that beer wasn’t invented until the maybe 7,000 years ago – way later than cavepeople, but we are not talking about drinking history, but drinking style. Follow us on this.
We should drink beer as if tomorrow we’re hunting a saber-toothed tiger and we might never come back. We should drink and enjoy our pale ales like there is no tomorrow. Dance like no one is watching. (last line inserted under protest) In essence, if we are going to eat and exercise like cavepeople, we should drink like cavepeople. So raise your stone cup and have another. Paleo Aleos – the way we should drink.
Whether you believe in the whole “evolution” theory or not, you are invited to our Free Tasting #2 at Titanic. It will take place Monday August 12 from 6pm – 8pm. Remember you need to RSVP on this event AND be one of the first 50 people to get to Titanic. We’ll be doing more swag give-aways and also giving away some G’fest tickets.

Over here at Grovetoberfest HQ summer is quite a special time. It’s the time of the year when we get to visit other festivals, try new beers, and most importantly, get ready for Grovetoberfest. Yes, we realize Grovetoberfest is in October and summer starts in May, but we have lots to do around here to get ready. For example, we just polished up the Free Tasting Series schedule. It’s not easy picking 7 deserving locations to host our free beer tastings. We also have to come up with interesting themes and write-ups – well, like this one. In addition, our crack graphics team has to pick just the right photo or take the right photo for each tasting. It’s a thankless job and our boss is no picnic. For example, the photo for our first tasting “Summer Beer is Here†had to be taken on-location. We just couldn’t find any stock images that said “summer†and “craft beer.†So our team loaded up the boat and headed to Bimini to take a few rounds of photos just to come up with one good one. As we’ve said before, it’s a thankless job. We chugged along and did our duty in order to deliver the perfect shot for the tasting. Above is the result.
Summer beers are always a favorite, especially in Miami where it feels like summer for 10 months of the year. A former friend of ours used to call these dog days “butt tickle hot.†He meant that it was so hot, that sweat would drip down his back, down his plumber’s crack, and make him tickle. Vivid, but nasty visual. That’s why he’s our “former friend.â€
We promise no butt tickling and plenty of great summer beers as we kick off the Grovetoberfest Free Tasting Series at Barracuda Bar & Grill in the Grove. Join us Monday July 29 from 6pm to 8pm. Be sure to get there at 6pm because we only have slots for the first 50 people who come through the door.

At Mas Vino, our mission is to prove that we have more wine. With over 3,000 different wines, spirits, craft beers and sakes in our store, we are proud to say that we are the largest independent beverage retailer in South Florida.
We specialize in rare and vintage wines that can be found nowhere else. Whether it’s the mythical Barca Velha from Portugal, a 1969 library release from Selvapiana Chianti, or a dessert wine from 1830, Mas Vino will have it. And if we don’t, we will track it down for you and deliver it to your doorstep. We go above and beyond the average wine retailer by working with over 50 different suppliers to find the wines and spirits that our customers are searching for.
Located in Hallandale Beach, minutes away from Aventura Mall and Gulfstream Park, we have 15,000 square feet of space to stock all of your beverage needs. Mas Vino is more than just wine. We also carry a variety of hard-to-find spirits, craft beers and sake, from Sassicaia Grappa to Dassai 23 Junmai Daiginjo.
Mount Gay Rum had a party at the Ritz Carlton in Key Biscayne two nights ago. I was in attendance with one of my friends and bumped into a few notable names. Let’s start with my bosses from Soul of Miami, James and Annette. James only wanted to know if I could be backup with the pics since his camera is on the fritz. I’ve got you covered, James!
No rum event is complete without an appearance by Rob Burr, and this was no exception. Rob let us know that this new Black Barrel Rum was a return to fine Barbados rum from a distiller that has a long history doing just that. Oh, and the rum was really good too.
Hope you like my photos! I love you guys!
