Website
Cost: Free

American Heritage Schools, the top-ranked PK3 through 12 college preparatory school, invites educators from throughout the country to its virtual “Continuing Education Webinar and Job Fair” on Tuesday, Jan. 31, at 7 p.m. EST. From the convenience of their homes, attendees will learn about job opportunities and the benefits of teaching at American Heritage Schools’ Broward Campus and Palm Beach Campus.

Viewers will hear directly from the American Heritage Schools President, Dr. Douglas Laurie, about how the Schools’ mentoring program supports educators in their professional growth. They will also earn 1.5 hours of continuing education credit offered by the Association of Independent Schools of Florida (AISF) by attending a keynote address given by nationally recognized teacher A.J. Juliani, founder of Adaptable Learning, on the importance of adaptability in the classroom.

Educating students is hard work. It was before the pandemic, and it has continued to challenge all teachers, coaches, administrators and parents. Going from in-person teaching to remote learning and then to a hybrid approach, educators have seen the need for flexible curriculum and instruction. Juliani’s Keynote builds on the best of what educators have done for years: adapt their instruction to meet the needs of their students.

Juliani serves as faculty for the University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Education (PLN) and is the former Director of Learning and Innovation for Centennial School District. As a curriculum coordinator, tech director, English teacher, football coach, and K-12 instructional coach, he has worked towards innovative learning experiences for schools in various roles. Juliani is also an award-winning blogger, speaker, and author of multiple books, including the best-sellers Adaptable, Empower, and Launch.

American Heritage Schools is one of the top four largest private schools in the nation and among the top 20 largest employers in South Florida. It is headed by educators rather than a board of directors and maintains subsidiary departments in-house, such as admissions, human Resources, curriculum development and PR/marketing. The Schools also offer free tuition for employees’ children and salary supplementation for additional roles, including tutoring during the year and teaching at the Summer Institute over the summer.

· 7-7:30 p.m.: Learn About Opportunities and Benefits of Teaching at American Heritage Schools
· 7:30-8:20 p.m.: A.J. Juliani, Keynote Speech “Adaptability in the Classroom”
· 8:20-8:30 p.m.: Q&A

American Academy, a program within American Heritage Schools, is pleased to host “How to Build Confidence in Students with Learning Disorders,” a virtual event via Zoom on Tuesday, Jan. 24 at 7 p.m. EST. This event is part of American Academy’s monthly speaker series, “Experts in Learning Differences.” Hosted by Alexandra Rollins, admissions director of the American Academy Program, the expert speakers for the January event are Ashley Freiman, Psy.D., Evan Mehlman, Psy.D. and Ryan Strosser, Psy.D.

Many children and adolescents struggle academically, some to the point that they are diagnosed with a learning disorder. This can have a profound impact on a student’s confidence and overall mental health depending on when the learning disorder was first diagnosed and the type of assistance that was provided. Yet, they can have similar success as their peers. One way we can level the playing field is by helping them push through their fears and develop confidence in themselves. In this episode of “Experts in Learning Differences,” three well-known practitioners with extensive experience using evidence-based treatments will provide useful techniques to help increase self-esteem in children and adolescents, improve communication skills and develop confidence in their abilities.

Dr. Freiman has over a decade of experience and treats patients throughout the lifespan of children, adolescents, adults and older adults. She uses a person-centered approach to collaborate with her clients and is skilled in cognitive behavior therapy, mindfulness and reminiscence therapies.

Dr. Mehlman is a licensed clinical psychologist and has extensive experience using evidence-based treatment methods to address a range of conditions, including OCD, anxiety, depression, selective mutism and Tourette’s disorder. He provides psychological, psychoeducational and neuroeducational testing for learning disabilities, giftedness, emotional/psychological conditions, ADHD and autism spectrum disorders.

Dr. Strosser specializes in helping individuals who have experienced recent and past trauma and is passionate about social justice. Dr. Strosser has traveled to Guyana, South America, several times in the past year where he currently is working to establish mental health support for various groups, including medical students, hospital staff and providers, police and faith communities.

“Our mission is to help children and adolescents take control of their lives, face their fears and learn to navigate uncertainty with confidence,” said Dr. Mehlman. “We strive to provide a caring and compassionate atmosphere and create healthier minds and happier individuals throughout our community.”

The speaker series is streamed live virtually and all previous episodes are available for viewing at any time. The purpose of the speaker series is to educate families about topics that relate to mild learning differences and are relevant today. All of the speakers are experts in the various disciplines of each topic. The American Academy’s goal is to provide families with a place to ask questions and strengthen their knowledge about how to ensure the success of their child.

Fejes’ appearance is part of History Fort Lauderdale’s “Florida Scribes & Stories,” a free meet the author monthly series that offers literary and history enthusiasts a chance to speak with local authors, purchase their latest releases and have them signed.

Fejes will share historical accounts about the evolution of the gay community in South Florida and its struggle for equality and acceptance as part of his “Queer by the Beach: The History of the Fort Lauderdale LBGT Community” talk. He’ll touch upon the origins of the first “gay” bar, “Club Ha-Ha,” that opened in Broward county in 1935 and the long line of clubs that followed which used female impersonators and raunchy entertainment to attract those whose sexuality and gender was outside the mainstream.

Fred Fejes is a professor emeritus at Florida Atlantic University in the School of Communication and Media Studies. He received his PhD from the Institute of Communication Research, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and was a 2018-2019 Fulbright-Palacky University Distinguished Chair at Palacky University, Czech Republic. His research interests include Queer history, sexuality and the media and Queer space. He authored “Gay Rights and Moral Panic: The Origins of America’s Debate On Homosexuality” (Palgrave-MacMillan), an account of the 1977 campaign for LGBT rights in Dade County, Florida and its national impact. He is also author of numerous articles about the LGBT community and the media. He is currently working on a book about the history the LGBT community to be published by University Press of Florida.

Upcoming authors in the “Florida Scribes & Stories” series include Donn R. Colee, Jr. on January 17 and Mike McGinnis and Jeff Davies on February 11. Additional novelists and dates will be announced. American Academy to Host Virtual Webinar, “Learn How to Learn…for Children and Teens with Learning Differences,” Featuring Mira and Mark Halpert 11/15/22

American Academy, a program within American Heritage Schools, is pleased to host “Learn How to Learn…for Children and Teens with Learning Differences,” a virtual event via Zoom on Tuesday, Nov. 15 at 7 p.m. This event is part of American Academy’s monthly program, “Experts in Learning Differences” speaker series. Hosted by Alexandra Rollins, admissions director of the American Academy Program, the expert speakers for the November event are Mira Halpert, M.Ed., founder and president of 3D Learner, and Mark Halpert, MBA, RMT, director of 3D Learner.

Kids who learn differently often learn best when they see and experience information. Too often, educational testing focuses on what is wrong with the child and does not fully encompass their strengths. During this virtual event, Mira and Mark Halpert of 3D Learner will explain how to identify the child who learns differently, the importance of addressing his or her challenges, and the benefits of strength-based parenting and education. Viewers will also learn their strengths and challenges as caregivers, useful tips on parenting, and the value of collaboration with their child’s teachers and school.

Mira is a champion for kids who learn differently. Her father was a great musical conductor who was able to bring together a whole orchestra; Mira sees herself as an ‘educational conductor’ who brings together parents, teachers, schools, and outside professionals to help maximize children’s strengths, identify and address their weaknesses, and unleash their potential. Mira has a degree in Developmental Psychology and a master’s degree in education from the University of Michigan.

“When our daughter was told, ‘You are not college material,’ we asked her what she wanted to be when she grew up. She said, ‘The teacher I never had!!!’ It was at that moment I became a mom on a mission determined to help bright kids who learn differently learn how THEY learn best,” said Mira Halpert, founder and president of 3D Learner. “My passion is helping kids learn how to learn the way they learn and providing them with the opportunity to be all they can be.”

Mark co-authored with his wife, Mira, a best-selling book titled, “The 3D Learner: Transform Stress to Outrageous Success for Your Child.” He is the director of 3D Learner as well as a math coach and a parent advocate focused on helping children succeed by third grade. Mark also works with his son, Michael, to help student-athletes improve their academic and athletic skills and earn college scholarships, and he champions the effort to improve students’ SAT and ACT scores with a focus on teaching the way they learn best.

Delman founded Beyond BookSmart in 2006, which he has grown into the world’s largest Executive Function coaching company, as its CEO. Prior to that, he co-founded and was the principal of McAuliffe Charter School in Framingham, Massachusetts. In 2018, he published his first book, “Your Kid’s Gonna Be Okay: Building the Executive Function Skills Your Child Needs in the Age of Attention,” and toured the country speaking with parents about how to help their children be productive and confident. A popular speaker at conferences, Delman has also been featured in The Times of London, CBS Boston affiliate WBZ TV, and dozens of media outlets across the country. Most recently, he has launched BrainTracks, a division of Beyond BookSmart that focuses on bringing Executive Function instruction to schools. As a lifelong educator, Delman’s passion is helping people discover their strengths, develop their confidence, and become more effective at whatever challenges they face.

“I want to help caregivers understand how children learn and grow, add tools to their parenting repertoire, and show them the skills they need to offer support in a way that kids will appreciate,” Delman stated.

Thursday, 10/13/2022-, 06:00 pm-08:00 pm

231 SW Second Avenue,
Fort Lauderdale, Florida, 33301

Cost: Free

History Fort Lauderdale, celebrating 60 years of stewardship of our community’s past by making our heritage accessible and engaging to residents and visitors, will present “Florida Scribes & Stories,” a free meet the author monthly series beginning Thursday, October 13, at 6 p.m. Literary and history enthusiasts are invited to speak with local authors, purchase their latest releases and have them signed at the New River Inn Museum of History.

The first installment of “Florida Scribes & Stories” will feature Bryan Brooks, author of “PALMETTOS AND SALTWATER: A Love Song for a Place that No Longer Exists, Old Ft Lauderdale.” This fictional story takes place in Fort Lauderdale in the middle of World War II. A decorated Naval officer returns home, now supposedly a disgraced coward, to find his city awash with racial strife, German submarines offshore and the girl he loved questioning his real purpose for returning. Brook is also the author of “Sea Wyfe, Gray Wolf and the Buckskin Coat: A sweeping tale of love and mystery, affecting people from different times and cultures, bound by a gray wolf who travels through time.”

Brooks lives in North Florida and is descended from ancestors that sprang from deep southern roots. Though much of his writing was influenced by a 30-year career in the Fort Lauderdale Police Department, much more of it flows from spending over three thousand hours of his life underwater. Passion for ocean waves slamming onto sandy beaches combined with a lifelong interest in American History helped him insert fictional characters into actual historical events, all while staying faithful to the spirit of the times.

Upcoming authors in the “Florida Scribes & Stories” include Christiana Lilly on November 7, Fred Fejes on December 7 and Donn R. Colee, Jr. in January 2023. Additional novelists and dates will be announced.

History Fort Lauderdale is proud to host a variety of engaging multicultural experiences, year-round. Permanent exhibits include “From Dugouts to Dream Yachts,” a visual narrative weaving the story of the ever-changing use of Fort Lauderdale’s waterways by following the strokes of the first people to today’s sightseers, “The Bryans of Fort Lauderdale” which allows visitors to experience the story of the City of Fort Lauderdale as told through the pioneer family that shaped its development from an agricultural outpost in 1896 to a bustling city in the 1920s to its current status as a leading Metropolis, “Juliette Lange: A Portrait of a Mezzo Soprano,” a fashion and lifestyle glimpse of the socially prominent Fort Lauderdale resident with a lauded career as a star vocalist of musical comedy, plus “Archaeology of the New River” and a multitude of stories and photos sharing the history of other founding families of Fort Lauderdale. The nonprofit museum also hosts an artists’ collective collaborative space.

“Love Beyond” this holiday season! The Salvation Army of Broward County is seeking South Florida residents with a positive outlook and an affinity for philanthropy and fun to apply for seasonal bell ringer positions during the nonprofit organization’s three job fairs on Tuesday, October 11, from 10 a.m. – noon, Thursday, October 13, from 1 p.m. – 3 p.m. and Thursday, October 27, from 10 a.m. – noon. The job fairs will take place at The Salvation Army’s headquarters at 100 SW 9th Avenue in Fort Lauderdale. Approximately 125 paid positions throughout 50 locations will need to be filled.

Synonymous with the Christmas season, “ringing the bell” at a Salvation Army Red Kettle has been a tradition since 1895. It’s not just about ringing a bell, however. All proceeds from the Kettle stay in Broward County and support the Salvation Army’s feeding, shelter and social service programs. Each year, the nonprofit organization raises hundreds of thousands of dollars during this effort for the Greater Fort Lauderdale community.

Bell Ringers will be selected for employment for the holiday period of November 11 – December 24.

The Red Kettle Bell Ringers program is only part of the nonprofit organization’s efforts to help those less fortunate. Last year’s Angel Tree Program secured and distributed thousands of gifts to families with diminished resources. The Salvation Army is presently assisting Hurricane Ian neighbor efforts in Central Florida and is also actively assisting thousands of residents-in-need through its Food Pantry. Each Thursday, trusted Army experts provide non-perishable items and other pantry goods to more hundreds of underserved families. The organization also provides meals-to-go services for the homeless, its residents and other impoverished individuals.

American Academy to Host “Secrets to Better Communication with Your ADHD Teenager” Featuring Diane Dempster and Elaine Taylor-Klaus 9/29/22

American Academy to Host “Secrets to Better Communication with Your ADHD Teenager” Featuring Diane Dempster and Elaine Taylor-Klaus
Thursday, 09/29/2022-, 07:00 pm-08:00 pm
Website
Cost: Free

American Academy, a program within American Heritage Schools, is pleased to host “Secrets to Better Communication with Your ADHD Teenager,” a virtual event via Zoom on Thursday, September 29 at 7 p.m. This event is part of American Academy’s monthly program, “Experts in Learning Differences” speaker series. Hosted by Alexandra Rollins, admissions director of the American Academy Program, the expert speakers for the September event are Diane Dempster and Elaine Taylor-Klaus, parent coaches and co-founders of ImpactParents.

This virtual event will provide viewers with proven techniques and scripts that can be used for better conversations and will help parents and teachers create harmony at home, in the classroom, and everywhere else. Attendees will learn how to diffuse defensiveness, get buy-in, provide effective feedback, and improve relationships instantly.

“We felt strongly that parents of complex kids with learning differences needed someone to provide support to help their kids navigate life’s complications, and we realized that ‘someone’ was us! Who better than two professional moms whose lives and families had been transformed by coaching to pave a new path for other parents?” said Dempster and Klaus. “Parents and educators want their children and students with learning differences to become independent and believe in themselves. They want to help them genuinely feel capable of becoming successful adults. When parents and educators have the support they need, they can become who they really want to be for their children and students.”

Diane Dempster, MHSA, CPC, PCC is a professional coach, speaker, author and educator with 20 years of corporate leadership experience. Dempster is the co-founder of ImpactParents.com, a coaching organization for parenting neurodiverse kids, and co-creator of Sanity School® and the Sanity School® Certification Program for professionals. An experienced leader, expert in change management, and all-around life-sherpa, Dempster helps clients create deep, sustaining change and open their eyes to life. Dempster received a master’s from the University of Michigan and coaching certification from the Institute for Professional Excellence in Coaching (iPEC).

Elaine Taylor-Klaus, MCC, CPCC co-founded the first global coaching organization for parenting neurodiverse kids, ImpactParents.com. The mother of a complex family of five, she co-created a comprehensive and empowering collaborative problem-solving method for fostering independence: the Impact Model for taking a coach-approach to parenting complex kids. An author, speaker, coach and trusted advisor, Taylor-Klaus is the co-creator of Sanity School® for Parents and the Sanity School® Certification Program for professionals. She is also co-author of “Parenting ADHD Now! Easy Intervention Strategies to Empower Kids with ADHD,” and the author of “The Essential Guide to Raising Complex Kids with ADHD, Anxiety and More.”

The speaker series is streamed live virtually, and available for viewing following each event. The purpose of the speaker series is to educate families about topics that relate to mild learning differences and are relevant today. All of the speakers are experts in the various disciplines of each topic. The American Academy’s goal is to provide families with a safe space to ask questions and strengthen their knowledge about how to ensure the success of their child.

Tickets are on sale, now, for “Eat Your Heart Out,” Fort Lauderdale’s favorite food and “fun”raiser featuring gourmet creations, fresh libations and live entertainment on Thursday, October 13, from 6 – 8:30 p.m. at Galleria Fort Lauderdale. This year’s highly anticipated event that benefits Heart Gallery of Broward County, a respected nonprofit organization committed to finding loving families for the hardest to place foster children, will honor City Furniture as its Child Advocate of the Year. Eric Yutzy, WPLG Local 10 morning news anchor, will host this year’s social occasion.

While the list of restaurants keeps growing, Heart Gallery of Broward is pleased to welcome Andy’s Live Fire Grill & Bar, Canyon, Eddie V’s Prime Seafood, Funky Buddha, Hellenic Republic, Lips, Press & Grind, S3, Season’s 52, Sicilian Oven, Sweeter Days Bake Shop, The Capital Grille, Tulio’s Tacos & Tequila Bar and Wilton Creamery. Cooper’s Hawk Winery & Restaurants will offer an exclusive wine bar while Harry Blu’s Gin and Stoli will craft cocktails as part of the open bar atmosphere. Live entertainment will be provided by songstress Laura Vivas, a former contestant NBC’s The Voice.

City Furniture, this year’s “Eat Your Heart Out” honoree, is a leading furniture and home accents retailer with 20 statewide showrooms and an online presence dedicated to style and value. Through its #CITYCARES program, the company gives 5% of its profits, annually, back to nonprofit organizations that foster a sense of home, service, education, health and diversity.

Attendees will also have the opportunity to win a variety of raffle prizes including a three-night Lago Mar suite stay including breakfast for two each morning and dinner plus additional gifts, two annual Water Taxi passes and three roundtrip airfares for two to anywhere Spirit Airlines flies.

Heart Gallery of Broward County launched in 2007 as a traveling photography exhibit of foster children who were waiting to be permanently adopted and has evolved to work closely with ChildNet and local foster care providers to seek adoptive families and other connections for these children. Now in its 9th year, this event, the largest and most successful fundraiser that the organization hosts, benefits not only the children, family and partner organizations it serves, but the whole community.

Event sponsors and contributors include City & Shore magazine, Galleria Fort Lauderdale, GPR | Goodman Public Relations, Lago Mar Beach Resort & Club, OutClique magazine, WPLG Local 10, Advanced Roofing, BBI – Burdette Beckmann Inc., Hudson Family Foundation, Las Olas Capital Advisors, Modular Office Environments, The Related Group, Blue Truck Productions, Fort Lauderdale Media Associates, Harry Blu’s Gin, Stoli, Team Enterprises, KO Lawyers, The Moss Foundation, Spirit Airlines, Toothaker.org, Walter Duke & Partners, RE Analyst and Water Taxi.

The 50-minute workout class will consist of 25 minutes of HIIT followed by 25 minutes of Zumba®. After the class, participants will enjoy healthy snacks and beverages.

Led by “Outfitter in Charge” Michelle Correa, the signature full body HIIT (high intensity interval training) Strength Circuit targets strength and conditioning with intense efforts and short rest periods while utilizing a color training system that keeps individuals challenged. Participants will do multiple sets of each exercise that provide maximum strength benefits while short rest periods ensure some cardiovascular development. The class includes four training stations featuring two exercises each highlighting mobility, stability, strength, power, core and cardio movements. All rounds consist of eight sets with duration options of 40 seconds (green), an optional push of 10 seconds (yellow), and either 25 seconds or 15 seconds of rest (white). There is also a 60 second strength boost after the last set at each station.

“Outfitter in Charge” and Zumba® certified instructor Laura White will lead a heartrate-boosting, dance party! Zumba® incorporates different body weight movements paired perfectly with the fast and slow rhythms of the music.

Participants can enter a raffle for the opportunity to win two personal training sessions with Outfitter in Charge Michelle Correa. Members who bring a friend to “Ladies Morning Out” who signs up for an OutFit membership will be awarded with an OutFit tank top and the friend will receive a 50% off their first month subscription.

OutFit delivers large, circuit-style classes that are open workouts conveniently located in beautiful public spaces coined “training grounds.” The classes provide the perfect blend of strength, cardio, flexibility, and fun. Each class is led by an expertly trained fitness coach, named an “OutFitter in Charge,” who arrives in an on-demand fitness van equipped with TRX® training gear and a heart-pumping sound and light system.

Offering a diverse roster of classes, Outfit workouts are unique with participants never repeating the same class. OutFit is accessible to people of all ages, abilities, and fitness levels.

Hetrick brought together a team of veteran fitness industry executives to form OutFit.

Vampire attacks, werewolf sightings, and the resurrection of an Egyptian Princess all make an appearance in Island City Stage’s newest production of “The Mystery of Irma Vep: A Penny Dreadful” by Charles Ludlam, running June 9 – July 10. This hilarious send-up of gothic romance and horror films, in which two actors and lightning-fast costume changes are the stars of the show, is part of the award-winning theater company’s 10th Anniversary 2021-22 South Florida Season.

Directed by Andy Rogow, this entertaining production is focused on an English estate haunted by the former mistress who has recently passed (or has she?). Add-in mummies, secret identities and a ton of madcap blunders all under the escapist guise of a gothic penny dreadful – grim short stories made popular in the mid-1800s and turned out en masse. The twist, here, is the high humor, 35 costume quick-changes and dozens of wigs that bring an eclectic cast of characters to life in this camp classic from Charles Ludlam (1943-1987), creator of New York’s Ridiculous Theatrical Company. “The Mystery of Irma Vep: A Penny Dreadful” originally premiered in October 1984 at the Sheridan Square Playhouse in New York City where it played for two years, and it remains Ludlam’s most popular play.

“The Mystery of Irma Vep: A Penny Dreadful” stars Bruce Linser and Larry Buzzeo.

Bruce Linser is a South Florida actor and director who last appeared at Island City Stage as Philip in “The Pride.” Other favorite roles include Artie in “The House of Blue Leaves” (Palm Beach Dramaworks), Man in Chair in “The Drowsy Chaperone” (The Wick Theatre), and Cliff in “Cabaret” (Maltz Jupiter Theatre). Favorite directing projects include “Man of La Mancha” and “Avenue Q” (MNM Theatre Company), and Woody Guthrie’s “American Song and The Spitfire Grill” (Palm Beach Dramaworks). He is also the manager of the Dramaworkshop in charge of new play development at Palm Beach Dramaworks. Linser is a member of Actors’ Equity Association and an associate member of the Stage Directors and Choreographers Society.

As they say in Poltergeist, “He’s baaack!” Proudly holding the distinction of “local actor who has appeared in the most Island City Stage productions,” Larry Buzzeo is ecstatic to reprise the role (or roles) for which he won the coveted Loafy award (a loaf of Cuban Bread) in Tampa, Florida, a decade ago. Though a Stamford, Connecticut native, Buzzeo’s professional theater life took root in the Sunshine State and Island City Stage is one of his favorite haunts. Fancying himself a character actor, Buzzeo is grateful for the opportunity to bring some truly colorful characters to life in Island City Stage productions including “Pig Tale,” “Hir,” “Grey Gardens,” “POZ,” “Daniel’s Husband” and almost every “Shorts Gone Wild.” His comedy-horror credits also include Dr. Frank-n-Furter in “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” (Slow Burn Theatre) and Dr. Frederick Frankenstein in “Young Frankenstein” (Pembroke Pines Theatre of Performing Arts).

“The Mystery of Irma Vep: A Penny Dreadful” is sponsored by Robert Korn and Al Menendez with support from Our Fund, the SHS Foundation, the Broward County Cultural Council and Florida Department of State Division of Arts & Culture.

Island City Stage’s 10th anniversary 2021-22 season kicked off with “The Twentieth Century Way” by Tom Jacobson in October, followed by “Armature” by Andrew Kramer and “Suddenly Last Summer” by Tennessee Williams.

Island City Stage is located at 2304 N. Dixie Highway in Wilton Manors. Show tickets are $35 each and are available at islandcitystage.org/the-mystery-of-irma-vep.

The prestigious American Heritage Schools, voted one of the Best Private Schools in America by Niche,
is pleased to announce that its summer programs, including Day Camp and Summer Institute, will be offered in-person or online during Summer 2022. The summer programs will run for nine weeks starting June 13 through August 12, 2022.

Summer Institute:
The American Heritage Summer Institute is a summer educational program that offers over 120 enrichment and reinforcement courses (3 week sessions or weekly seminars), specifically designed with student interest and engagement in mind, to students from PK3 through 12th grade. American Heritage Schools’ course offerings are often viewed as the gold standard in college-preparatory education and the Summer Institute continues that standard.

High school course offerings include advanced test prep, honors and AP level research work, as well as unique pre-professional programs for those interested in future careers in medicine, law, or business entrepreneurship.

The Summer Institute also offers a wide variety of enrichment and reinforcement programs for Middle School (grades 6-8) and Lower School (Pre-K 3 to 5th grade) students as well as one-on-one tutoring options for those looking to enhance their skills and build confidence as we head into the new school year.

The American Heritage Summer Institute features top-notch instructors, all of whom are degreed and certified professionals in their fields.

For more information or to sign up, please visit: https://online.ahschool.com/pages/summer-institute

Summer Camps:
American Heritage Schools’ summer camp programs are designed for children ages 3-14. In addition to Day Camp, specialty camps vary by campus, and include Robotics, Art, Science, Musical Theatre, Video Production and Sports camps. Each camper enjoys age-appropriate activities supervised by American Heritage Schools’ highly qualified staff.

Cabins for ages 3-5 are co-ed, while ages 6-13 have separate cabins for boys and girls. All cabins, which are classrooms during the school year, are air conditioned and campers take pride in decorating them to reflect the cabin’s theme.

To expand the number of recreational activities available to campers ages 8-13, age-appropriate field trips are scheduled. All field trips are supervised by Off-Campus Directors as well as an appropriate number of counselors. Prior to starting camp, campers will receive a schedule of activities.

American Heritage offers Free bus transportation from central locations throughout the tri-county area.

The summer camps are directed by state certified teachers and college or high school students who have been carefully screened by American Heritage Schools. Many of the counselors are students or alumni of the school or have been campers or Counselors In Training (CITs) for a number of years. They are well-trained in safety and camp policies.

American Academy to Host “Mindfulness and Your Child” Featuring Expert Author and Instructor Piero Falci 5/19/22

American Academy, a program within American Heritage Schools, is pleased to host “Mindfulness and Your Child,” a virtual event via Zoom on Thursday, May 19 at 7 p.m. This event is part of American Academy’s monthly program, “Experts in Learning Differences” speaker series. Hosted by Alexandra Rollins, admissions director of the American Academy Program, the expert speaker for the May event is Piero Falci, an author and educator of mindfulness meditation and mindful living.

Mindfulness is a word that means different things to different people. During this event, Falci will explain why it is important to help children practice mindfulness meditation and prepare them to live more mindfully. He equates mindfulness to a sport in which mindfulness meditation is the practice, and mindful living is the game. While practice is important, what one does in practice is of less consequence than their performance during the game. Viewers will truly be inspired by Falci’s wisdom and learn valuable strategies for children to embrace life and become better human beings.

“There is a lot of violence and insanity in the world, and I am convinced that mindfulness is an antidote to that. I am devoted to helping individuals have insights that may expand their selflessness and compassion and lead to the growth of kindness and care for all sentient beings and the natural environment,” said Falci.

Falci is an educator of mindfulness meditation and mindful living and several well-established programs, such as the acclaimed Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) program. He received his training from the teachers at the Center for Mindfulness in Medicine, Health Care, and Society at the University of Massachusetts Medical School and his MBSR Teacher Certification at the Mindfulness Center at Brown University School of Public Health. He also teaches the Mind-Body Skills Group (MBSG) Program developed by the Center for Mind-Body Medicine, as well as the Mindfulness in Schools Project’s .b (DOT-BE) curriculum for teenagers. He has written several books and offers a variety of mindfulness courses on how to apply mindfulness for the improvement of life.

The speaker series is streamed live virtually, as well as available for viewing following each event.

American Academy is pleased to host “Understanding Your Child’s Educational Diagnosis,” a virtual event via Zoom on Tuesday, March 29 at 7 p.m. This event is part of American Academy’s monthly program, “Experts in Learning Differences: A Speaker Series.” Hosted by Alexandra Rollins, admissions director of the American Academy Program, the expert speaker for the March event is Dr. David A. Yudell, a Licensed Clinical Psychologist.

Finding the “gift within” a child is essential to building confidence and success in school and life. In this episode of “Experts in Learning Differences,” Dr. Yudell will explain how to understand and use educational evaluations to uncover weaknesses and highlight strengths in order to enhance a child’s schooling and benefit his or her academic and social achievements. Throughout his discussion, Dr. Yudell will provide evidence-based, scientifically proven, and effective tools that motivate a child’s entire support system to work together towards improvement and advancement.

“Every individual needs an area in which to shine, particularly those with difficulties in school. Educational evaluations provide a snapshot of a child’s unique abilities in order to reinforce strengths and ensure that self-esteem, motivation, and ambition are not thwarted,” said Dr. Yudell.

Dr. Yudell practices in Broward and southern Palm Beach counties. He specializes in both child and adult pathology and has extensive experience completing psychological evaluations and testing in private and public schools, the Division of Disability, the Division of Vocational Rehabilitation, and in private practice. Dr. Yudell received his Doctorate in Clinical Psychology from Nova Southeastern University and holds a master’s degree in clinical psychology from NSU and a master’s degree in counseling from Seton Hall University.

American Heritage Schools Invites Educators to Its Virtual “Continuing Education Webinar and Job Fair” 3/29/22

American Heritage Schools Invites Educators to Its Virtual “Continuing Education Webinar and Job Fair”

Website
Cost: Free

American Heritage Schools, the top-ranked PK3 through 12 college preparatory school, invites educators from throughout the country to its virtual “Continuing Education Webinar and Job Fair” on Tuesday, March 29 at 7 p.m. From the convenience of their homes, attendees will learn about job opportunities available at the schools’ Broward Campus and Palm Beach Campus and earn 1.5 hours of continuing education credit by attending a keynote address given by nationally recognized speaker and Chief Editor of Cult of Pedagogy, Jennifer Gonzalez.

American Heritage Schools is one of the top four largest private schools in the nation, and among the top 20 largest employers in South Florida. It is headed by educators rather than a board of directors, and maintains subsidiary departments in-house, such as Admissions, Human Resources, Curriculum Development, and PR/Marketing. The schools also offer free tuition for employees’ children and salary supplementation for additional roles, including tutoring during the year and teaching at the Summer Institute over the summer.

The topic of Gonzalez’s webinar is “What Really Makes a Difference in Teaching?” Gonzalez has over ten years of classroom experience, mainly teaching middle school language arts, but also teaching at the collegiate level to train pre-service teachers. She is currently the Chief Editor of Cult of Pedagogy, a website she created, where she works full-time helping teachers of all subjects and grade levels practice and perfect the art of teaching. This session will explore the four rock-solid truths backed by research on how people learn, and how if followed when planning lessons, it is more likely for real learning to happen for students.

“We are always seeking qualified, determined educators who are motivated to work with the best and brightest students in the nation,” said Dr. Douglas Laurie, president of American Heritage Schools. “Our ‘Continuing Education Webinar and Job Fair’ will give job-seekers the chance to discover who we are and the current positions we have available, while at the same time get empowered and gain knowledge about how to make a powerful impact when teaching from an inspirational speaker and nationally renowned educator, Jennifer Gonzalez.”

The virtual webinar and job fair is free to attend. To register, please visit: https://ahschool-bd.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_pZkSjfe5ReydqHhfzgMgOA

In just a few short years, everything has changed about how we get our information. It wasn’t that long ago that a few nightly news broadcasts and our local newspaper provided the grist for the American conversation. Diverse groups of citizens were largely working off of the same set of facts – screened for accuracy by editors who were responsible by professional ethics to get the facts right (or print a retraction).

This new media environment is causing political fury and hardening cultural divides. We can agree there is a flood of biased content out there, and some would argue the news is biased. Increasingly, people are frequently seeking out news, editorial, and other content that is aligned to their beliefs, and now more than ever, there are more options for finding that content that leans in a particular political direction.

So, join us for our second dinner of the season as we debate the difference between media, news and information. We’ll touch base on how it might be possible to recognize the most flagrant cases of bias in the behavior of reporters and experts, how we can get out under social media’s influence on what we see and what is re-enforced to us as well as the role advertising and special interest groups play. Ultimately, we’ll debate what the loss of trust means for us as individuals and for our country.

Panelists:
Evelyn Baker – Executive Producer/Univision Communications Inc.
Frank J. Guzman – Broward Bureau Chief/WSVN-TV
Justin Sayfie – Publisher/Sayfie Review and Partner/Ballard Partners

Hallelujah! Sebrina Maria Alfonso will conduct the South Florida Symphony Orchestra’s (SFSO) premiere performance of Handel’s glorious holiday tradition, Messiah! This beloved seasonal masterpiece featuring vocalists Neil Nelson, bass baritone (previously featured as the lead in South Florida Symphony’s 2019 production of Porgy and Bess); Martin Nusspaumer, tenor; Brittany Graham, soprano; Rehanna Thelwell, mezzo-soprano and the 100-member South Florida Symphony Chorus will commence on December 1, at 7:30 p.m., at The Parker in Fort Lauderdale.

Smithsonian magazine writes, “A musical rite of the holiday season, the Baroque-era oratorio still awes listeners 250 years after the composer’s death.” Handel’s popular work, which draws from the Christian Lent and Easter stories, encompasses a musical narrative brilliance that transcends belief systems.”

South Florida Symphony Orchestra will perform Part I of Handel’s Messiah. The concert will open with an extraordinary “Behind the Music” story incorporating a reenactment of the dramatic struggle faced by composer George Fredric Handel as he toiled to complete this holiday masterpiece. Audiences will be enchanted by regally costumed actors narrating meaningful work passages that truly elevate the concert-going experience. The performance culminates with the iconic “Hallelujah” chorus as sung by the South Florida Symphony Chorus, made-up of seasoned chorale singers and community talent. The Chorus is conducted by Dr. Giselle Elgarresta Rios, who will also lead the orchestra at the December 4 concert at Barry University. Rios and Maestra Alfonso collaborated to create the South Florida Symphony Chorus in 2019, which made its debut at the Beethoven 250th celebration in February of 2020.

Tickets for Handel’s Messiah start at $15 for the December 1 concert at The Parker (707 NE 8th St, Fort Lauderdale) and can be purchased online at https://southfloridasymphony.org/messiah or via the Broward Center for the Performing Arts Box Office at (954) 462-0222. Five-concert subscription packages starting at $99 are also available for the 2021/22 Season at The Parker.

On July 1st, The Senate Bill 646: Intercollegiate Athlete Compensation and Rights went into effect. This Bill authorizes certain intercollegiate athletes to earn compensation for the use of their names, images, or likenesses (NIL). The bill also prohibits a postsecondary educational institution and other entities, institutions, and their employees from compensating intercollegiate athletes or prospective intercollegiate athletes for the use of their names, images, or likenesses.

Now the question is was this a good move or a bad move? Will College athletes still favor the love of the game and the alma mater vs. the money that comes from their NIL. Will NIL profit throw off the competitive balance? Will College athletes become instant millionaires?

The panelists spearheading this discussion are Corey Staniscia, External Affairs Director of Dreamfield, and Mary Giardina, Senior Associate AD/Administration and Chief of Staff/SWA at Florida Atlantic University. The event will be moderated by Joe Rose, radio personality on The Joe Rose Show on 560WQAM.

The event is free and open to the public. If you’d like to make a donation to support Village Square programming, you may do so when you register.

My State MLS, the first nationwide Multiple Listing Service of its kind with agents in all 50 states and Puerto Rico, is hosting free webinars in July, August and September for real estate professionals looking to grow their career and market their listings with an MLS that caters to their specific needs.

The webinars will introduce real estate professionals to My State MLS’s new features, including MLS Affiliate and MH Authority. The September webinars will give the audience a refresher on real estate basics, including how to market themselves and how to expand their business.

All webinars take place on Thursdays from 2-3 p.m. ET. Please see the webinar schedule and registration details below:

What is MH Authority? – July 22, 2-3 p.m. ET
Among a shortage of affordable housing options, buyers are increasingly turning to mobile and manufactured homes. However, most consumer real estate websites treat manufactured housing as an afterthought, and sites that are built for mobile/manufactured listings are outdated and riddled with inaccurate listings. That’s why My State MLS created MH Authority, the ultimate consumer-facing source for mobile/manufactured listings. It’s time to make the manufactured housing process easier for buyers, sellers, and professionals. David Mink, operations manager and national trainer for My State MLS, will be the moderator.

Going Live – Introduction to Facebook Live for Real Estate – Aug. 5, 2-3 p.m. ET
Creating video content is no longer an optional boost to a marketing strategy – it’s critical for success. Videos receive better social media engagement, increase email open rates, and can even improve SEO. With live streaming services like Facebook Live, real estate professionals don’t even need fancy gear or a lengthy script to get started. David Mink, operations manager and national trainer for My State MLS, will be the moderator.

Dear Dave – Advice for Your (Customer) Relationships – Aug. 19, 2-3 p.m. ET
Join My State MLS for sizzling tips on how to keep cool while trying to win new listings, ride the wave of showings and buyer inquiries and heat up your marketing strategy for the best summer yet. David Mink, operations manager and national trainer for My State MLS, will be the moderator.

Back to School Series – 2-3 p.m. ET
This September, it’s time to go back to school. Join My State MLS live every Thursday at 2 p.m. ET to brush up on the basics. Attendees will learn how to take their real estate career to the next level.
Sept. 2 – Continuing Education (CE) and Beyond: David Mink, operations manager and national trainer for My State MLS, will be the moderator.
Sept. 9 – Becoming A Broker: David Mink, operations manager and national trainer for My State MLS, will be the moderator.

“My favorite singer….” Tony Bennett

Ever since he burst on the jazz scene in the latter part of the twentieth century, The Brooklyn-born, Harlem-based vocalist/guitarist/bandleader/composer Allan Harris has reigned supreme as the most accomplished and exceptional singer of his generation. Aptly described by the Miami Herald as an artist blessed with, “the warmth of Tony Bennett, the bite and rhythmic sense of Sinatra, and the sly elegance of Nat ‘King’ Cole,” the ample and aural evidence of Harris’ moving and magisterial artistry can be heard on his fourteen recordings as a leader; his far-flung and critically-acclaimed concerts around the world, from Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York, and Washington DC’s Kennedy Center, to the 2012 London Olympics, and many prestigious bookings in Europe, The Middle East and Asia. “I’m a storyteller through the genre of jazz.”

Pompano Beach Arts presents Karina Iglesias and the Nu-Thang

WHO: Karina Iglesias and the Nu-Thang

WHAT: A virtual concert

WHERE: from the Pompano Beach Cultural Center

WHEN: Saturday June 19, from 8 to 9:30 PM

WHY:In 2013, Karina was a contestant on NBC’s #1 Hit TV Show, The Voice. She made it to the Top 16 on the live shows. She was originally on Adam Levine’s team but was later stolen by Shakira after her epic performance of “Its a man’s, man’s, man’s world” which turned into a YouTube sensation. With her highly-focused artistic vision, rich cultural background and proclivity for harnessing a wide range of production techniques, Karina Iglesias brings forth a strong element of innovation and heralds a much-needed return to the authenticity of pure soul music.

Born and raised in Miami, Florida to Honduran parents, Karina Iglesias’ sound mirrors the diverse musical and cultural influences that have shaped her character and forged her individuality as an artist. With a style equally informed by rhythm and blues, boleros, gospel and hip-hop Karina delivers her performances with the intimacy of a deep soul crooner and the conviction and drive of a dauntless female singer/songwriter.

A veteran of the Miami live music scene, Karina began writing songs during the time she started working extensively with local bands. It soon became apparent that through composing original material, her true artistic identity had emerged. Her emotionally charged and deeply personal lyrics now revealed a depth of character and vulnerability that can only be conveyed when a singer truly connects with their song. Hosted by Tamara G of WLYF 101.5

TICKETS: Available for $15 at http://pompanobeacharts.org/programs/music-series
Note: Tickets are valid for the following two weeks.
The final three concerts in the series are available for $37.50

The David Kikoski Quartet featuring Eric Alexander April 17

David Kikoski has had a long career as one of the New York area’s swingingest pianists. His band features NY all-stars with renowned tenor saxophonist Eric Alexander, bassist Joe Martin and the incomparable drummer, Billy Hart. The online-only concert is April 17 @ 8:00 pm – 10:00 pm EDT, South Florida JAZZ on ViewStub. The $15 ticket also includes 360 days of extended access to re-watch the concert in case you miss the premier. Link: https://viewstub.com/David-Kikoski-Quartet-feat-Eric-Alexander

While Kikoski can frequently get into that hard-core beast-like state of effervescent, muscular swing, he can also play with great beauty, sensitivity and lyricism, especially on ballads and when accompanying vocalists. Tonight, along with preferred rhythm section mates Joe Martin on bass and the splendid, venerable drummer, Billy Hart, is tenor saxophonist Eric Alexander, who has been a South Florida JAZZ favorite for several years, now making his fourth appearance. Alexander is one of the most respected and also prolific artists on the jazz scene.

PS: You told us and we’ve listened – you will be able to view the concert to your Smart TV via YouTube. Viewstub will send you an access code for the concert. On the Viewstub viewing page there is link to YouTube from which you then can cast the content to your TV.

The Moroccan caftan has become fashionable throughout dynasties and continents. This basic garment as we know it has played a key role in dressing sultans, generals and nobles for many centuries.

The true origins or perhaps even the genesis of this garment are shrouded in mystery. Some claim it belongs to the Ottoman Empire (based on the appellation), while others attribute it to Moroccan, West African or even Asian cultures.

Students who might not have the opportunity to be influenced and mentored by strong women role models, will engage with inspiring and exciting keynote speakers, attend breakout sessions led by experienced women leaders paired with young female JA Alumni and receive a swag bag.

The event keynote speaker is Ari Chambers, a multi-media journalist, sports host, and social media manager based in New York City. “We are honored to serve as the title sponsor of Junior Achievement Girls Rule,” said Mo Corker, Comerica Bank Florida External Affairs Market Manager. “Historically, women have played a vital role in our country’s economic recovery and growth, which is why it is important that we invest in girls’ and women’s empowerment. Our bank is committed to equipping the leaders of tomorrow with the tools and money skills needed to navigate the increasingly complex financial landscape. Partnering with JA on this initiative, creates a path to economic freedom for girls who traditionally would not have access to these resources.”

The event will feature a socially-distanced drive-in and women’s empowerment presentation all in one, at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Oasis parking lot in Hollywood, Florida.

All proceeds from ticket sales will benefit United Way of Broward County as they tackle the most complex, critical challenges and create long-lasting positive change in our community.

Dominique Dawes, three-time Olympic gymnast, Olympic gold medalist, a member of the gold-medal-winning “Magnificent Seven” team, and the first Black gymnast to qualify for the Olympic games, will serve as the keynote speaker. She has served as the national spokesperson for the “Girl Power” campaign, which was a youth empowering initiative run by the Clinton administration. She focuses on issues that young people and women face today, such as developing positive self-esteem, incorporating fitness/wellness as part of a healthy lifestyle, and empowering girls to envision their dreams and ultimately reaching their full potential.

The outdoor “Magnolia After Dark ― Engines Off, Party On!” will be an in-person girls’ night out drive-in, with gates opening at 6:30 p.m. and programming taking place 7:30–10 p.m. on a stage. Participants are encouraged to bring “gal pals” of all ages and pack a cooler with food and drinks or enjoy a Teriyaki wok-style meal from Potions in Motion Catering. Social distancing will be observed on-site and all cars will be six feet apart.

Cathy Donnelly, director of Community Relations for the Castle Group, will be honored as the Woman of Inspiration. Jamie Hagar, employee health and benefits consultant for Marsh & McLennan Agency (MMA), will be honored as the Woman of Promise.

Event co-chairs are Traci Miller of Miller Construction Company, and Nicole Villarroel of Olive & Judd, P.A. Rock With U will emcee the event. Also speaking will be Kathleen Cannon, president & CEO of United Way of Broward County; and Mary Beth Albritton, Ph.D., vice president of Major Gifts for United Way of Broward County.

Raffle items will include a weekend in Broward County with hotel stays and dining (one entry for $25 or five entries for $100), and a basket of fun excursions (one entry for $100).

“‘Magnolia After Dark ― Engines Off, Party On!’ is certain to be a spectacular, memorable event celebrating the 10th anniversary of Magnolia,” said Miller. “A safe, socially-distanced girls’ night out, it will be incredibly entertaining and feature speakers, a mesmerizing light show, optional food, and much more.”

“This year’s Magnolia event is truly special because amid the COVID-19 pandemic, we have created a unique, exciting evening for all ages to enjoy, safely,” said Villarroel. “We are pleased to have event proceeds benefitting those who have been impacted this past year due to the pandemic and those who were in dire need before COVID-19.”

“We at United Way of Broward County’s Women United are thrilled to have Dominique Dawes speak in-person at this 10th Annual Magnolia event,” said Albritton. “From Olympic gold medalist to Broadway performer, to TV analyst, to president of the Women’s Sports Foundation, Ms. Dawes continues on a path to inspire, motivate and lead, something that our women value and implement into their daily lives.”
