Conversation/Book Signing Open to the Public, and Viewing of Museum’s Current Exhibitions

The Museum of Art | Fort Lauderdale, Nova Southeastern University and Books & Books is reaching out to book clubs and others who enjoy literature with the new “Art of Literature” monthly series. Each event will feature an acclaimed author scheduled by Books & Books, and include a private cocktail reception and Q&A with the author. Following, the public is invited to enjoy conversation with the author and a book signing. Guests will also have the opportunity to view the Museum’s current exhibitions located on the building’s second floor, which include Sight Specific: Explorations in Space, Vision and Sound and The Art of Caring: A Look at Life through Photography.

The first “Art of Literature” event on Wednesday, June 22 will feature New York Times bestselling author Lisa See. During the private cocktail reception, attendees will enjoy wine and hors d’oeuvres while See discusses her latest book, Dreams of Joy. Dreams of Joy, which picks up where Shanghai Girls ended, tells the story of a mother’s and daughter’s struggles as they combat their guilt-ridden past, and a Communist China intolerant of their free spirits. Reservations are required for the cocktail reception/Q&A; the cost is $25 per person.

See will have the opportunity to discuss her other works during the Q&A and conversation. She also wrote the critically-acclaimed international bestseller Snow Flower and the Secret Fan, which is now a movie, opening July 2011. Her other books include Peony in Love, Shanghai Girls, On Gold Mountain: The One-Hundred-Year Odyssey of My Chinese-American Family, and Flower Net: A Red Princess Mystery.

Museum of Art | Fort Lauderdale, Nova Southeastern University is hosting its June Third Thursday, a fun, free community celebration on June 16, featuring a book signing with former U.S. Senator and Florida Governor Bob Graham, free viewing of the Museum’s exhibitions, 2-for-1 wine and beer, and more on its new artist-designed Plaza. The event is a stop on the popular Art Walk Las Olas, during which attendees explore the cultural and arts scene on Las Olas Boulevard and in downtown Fort Lauderdale.

Held the third Thursday of each month throughout the summer, June’s Third Thursday event will include a Books & Books book signing at 6:30 p.m. with former Senator/Governor Graham, who will be signing copies of his political thriller Keys to the Kingdom. In the book, Graham includes rich details and insider knowledge gleaned from his years spent asChair of the Senate Intelligence Committee. Free and open to the public, the book signing will take place at Books & Books in the Museum Lobby.

During the evening, the public will have the opportunity to view, for free, the Museum’s exhibitions including the acclaimed Sight Specific: Explorations in Space, Vision and Sound and the newly-opened The Art of Caring: A Look at Life through Photography. Sight Specific features nine installations created by 11 of South Florida’s leading contemporary artists. The renowned Art of Caring is an entertaining, thought-provoking and inspiring display of photographs spanning more than a60-year time period. The Museum’s galleries will be open for free from 5-8 p.m.

“Third Thursday is a wonderful opportunity for the public to come together and celebrate art, music, wine and more,” said Irvin Lippman, the Museum’s Executive Director. “We’re also very pleased to have former Senator and Governor Graham on site during this month’s event to sign his intriguing new book.”

Laurence Gartel known as the “FATHER” of Digital Art is pleased to announce the unveiling of his all new Mercedes Art Car Project. Gartel has “taken a turn” with his work, and hand painted in Graffiti style a classic 1971 Mercedes Benz 300 SEL. This is a major departure from his celebrated SUPER CAR computer generated adorned vehicles. He calls this latest creation: “Tactile Experiential.” Now after 35-years Mr. Gartel picks up a brush and spray cans to work in traditional media: Paint. This is surely a paradigm shift in society where by people use computers before they open a can of paint. “Its a completely different experience” says Gartel. One can stare at a computer for many reasons all day long.” “We all do that.” “The action of physical movement is a different story,” Gartel implies.

“I am not giving up the computer at all,” Gartel states. “The traditional painted car is just the beginning.” “From here the image is transformed.” As far as the Mercedes, it now is added to the line up of Art Cars with the Telsa Art Roadster and the Ferrari Scuderia 430 being adorned in computer generated imagery. Prints are available both of documentary photographs and digitally processed works.

Susan Q Wood aka SusieQ, is an accomplished, award winning artist, author of Speak Your Truth, and Get on with Your Life and the publisher of Natural Awakenings Magazine in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. This magazine supports the health and wellness industry. She knew her art was on the right path when she started hearing how it made viewers feel. Once she heard them say that the artwork had become an important part of their environment, that it “spoke” to them in a loving way that fostered a positive attitude, she knew her creations were fulfilling their mission. By offering images in many different ways and formats, SusieQ intends to see her art fulfill its mission not only for individuals, groups and communities, but by contributing to the broader consciousness across the globe.

Amaila Brujis is fascinated with painting people. Initially, she painted these characters walking or running towards the horizon, melting in the distance with the colors of the sand and the sea. These landscapes were inspired in the deserts and the ocean near Lima, Peru where she grew up. There was a sense of loneliness, nostalgia of something gone, a quiet emotion, like the desert. The complexities of the human interaction in the streets of Miami, New York, London and Tel Aviv. Her images come from photographs I take in streets, museums or train stations. They come and go. Some appear to be in a hurry, and some are distracted, thoughtful, mysterious, lonely, or lost in the distance. Each person has his own story. In a multitude one may feel a sense of loneliness, but at the same time feel they are apart of humanity, going to the same place, sharing a common destiny.

Wendy White paints with the sensitivity of divine inspiration. Each painting is a medium in which she channels energies from the creative realm in order to manifest on the canvas. Using the medium of oils and glazes she strives to achieve a resonance of light that the “Old Masters” utilized in the Impressionist era. She often paints to music, and has found “rhythm” the unifying element of all the art forms including painting, writing, dance, and theatre. Each painting becomes a drum, as the “rhythm” of each brush stroke develops into a beating crescendo of colors vibrating to a complete musical symphony of tone. The rhythm floats the form – and the painting is revealed. Each painting has a destiny; and it is not hers as the artist to keep – the art of painting is a gift in which she receives in order to survive and she have learned to help others by utilizing this gift for the better good of the world. Painting is a consistent source of inspiration. As each canvas goes fo
rth in the world they are gifts of light for all to enjoy.

Four artists reveal themselves and their subjects as a multimedia collaboration intended to bring awareness to social issues.

EXPOSED is comprised of figurative painter Barry Gross, composer/filmmaker Neal Fox, motion photographer Adela Holmes, and celebrity and fashion photographer Presscott MacDonald.

The project began a year ago with several days of photo shoots based on four themes: Social Commentary, Spirituality, Time and Chance, and Metamorphosis. While MacDonald and Holmes worked with the models, Gross captured images for his paintings, and Fox shot footage of the artists at work for his videos. Thus making the multimedia project multilevel as well with art within the art.

Now the work is ready for viewing in a most suitable venue: the brand new Barry Gross Gallery in Fort Lauderdale.

The exhibit runs through June 24th.

Film + Design: The Golden Age of Hollywood features a 10,000-square-foot model house with 18 beautifully designed and decoratedrooms created by leading interior design firms. Each installation is inspired by a classic American film from the 1920s through the 1960s. During the event, several designers will be discussing their work and influences.

Twilight Notes and Brew Urban Cafe are proud to announce the first Dialect event of 2011. We are teaming up with Jose Lopez of Freedom Art who has worked with us to find the best talent in the local art scene and will be curating the event. Dialect is an eve have put together an exhibition of photography, design, painting and more. As always, Twilight Notes has brought together an unbelievable lineup of Dj’s for your listening pleasure. Returning favorites Kent Lawlor, Damask and Dj Esoteric will be playing alongside very special guest Richard Verges of Radio-Active Records. The event is hosted by Rob Negron and Brew Urban Cafe will have their usual specials on beer, wine, and specialty coffee.

A celebration of the arts, which will include a one-day showcase of local arts organizations and a preview of performing and visual arts experiences throughout the month at The Galleria. Arts organizations, which have confirmed participation include but are not limited to: Art and Culture Center of Hollywood, ArtServe, Broward Center for the Performing Arts, Fort Lauderdale Children’s Theatre, Gold Coast Jazz Society, Miramar Cultural Center and Young at Art Museum.

This community effort will launch with a benefit in support of FAB! (Funding Arts Broward) and will honor a select few who are a driving force in the arts community.

The Galleria’s “Spring for the Arts” was created to educate, inspire and motivate the community to embrace the arts. This premiere event will serve as a platform to show the positive impact art and culture has on our community.

“Invisible in the City: Lives of Urban Refugees” has toured Shanghai, Geneva, Milan, and New York.
To illustrate the resilience of refugees in cities, their hopes and dreams as they struggle to simply survive, make a living and care for their families, United Nations Higher Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) sent renowned photographer Zalmaï Ahad, to urban settings in Colombia, Malaysia and South Africa. At age 15, Ahad spent three months in his grandmother’s basement hiding from the Soviet army before fleeing to Switzerland, where he was educated and still lives.
Internationally acclaimed photographer Zalmai’s work has been published in several magazines and newspapers, including the New York Times Magazine, Time Magazine, Le Temps, Newsweek and La Republica.
Fort Lauderdale is the only host city for the 50-piece exhibit in South Florida during the limited US tour. Exhibition runs January 10 – 15, 2011.

Vatican Splendors: A Journey through Faith and Art, one of the largest collections of art, documents and historically significant objects from the Vatican to ever tour North America, will be on view at the Museum of Art | Fort Lauderdale, Nova Southeastern University, from Jan. 29-April 24, 2011. Group tickets (for groups of 15 or more) and single tickets are now available for purchase. The renowned exhibition is presented by Holy Cross Hospital, in association with PNC Bank and AutoNation.

Vatican Splendors illustrates the evolution of the Catholic Church and its papacy beginning with Saint Peter, with special emphasis on art and historical objects reflecting significant events and periods relating to Christianity. The exhibition includes more than 200 objects, many of which have never been on public view. It features spectacular paintings by artists such as Giotto and Il Guercino, sculpture by Baroque master Gian Lorenzo Bernini, and unique objects including paintings, mosaics, sculpture, jewels, intricately embroidered silk vestments, uniforms of the Papal Swiss Guard, as well as an elaborately decorated gold and silver reliquary containing bone fragments of Saint Peter and Saint Paul. A highlight of the exhibition is a small stone PietaÌ, a relief carved by Michelangelo late in his career, which is accompanied by documents and personal objects belonging to the Renaissance master.

The objects are presented in the Museum’s galleries and in specially-created environments that enhance the visitor’s understanding of both the historical and artistic significance of each work. Descriptive labels throughout the exhibition are bilingual in both English and Spanish, as is an audio tour, which is available for an additional fee.

Irvin Lippman, the Museum’s Executive Director, said, “This exhibition provides residents and visitors to South Florida a singular opportunity to view an enormously important artistic and historic collection that literally opens a window onto the development of Catholic Church, its contributions to the political and cultural life of the western world, and depictions of faith and art.”

Single Vatican Splendors tickets, which include general admission to the Museum, are priced at $20 for adults, $17 for seniors, and $13 for children, and are now available. Chicago-based artist Jeroen Nelemans’s solo exhibition Live Feed-ing explores how changes in perception and scale can uncover interrelationships between natural and artificial systems. Comprised of a site-specific and a video installation, both works on view measure and evaluate how cyclical progressions coexist in natural and artificial systems, and how new relationships can be formed when intertwined or placed within different contexts.

Animate objects become inanimate and visa versa in the work Live Feed-ing, 2006, as two display cases are placed within a larger display case, one containing a working fish tank and the other featuring a monitor display of live video camera feed footage highlighting a specific zoomed-in view into the neighboring aquatic environment.

The role of space and time within natural and artificial orders is further mined and undermined in Six Feet Above, 2010, (pictured above) in which a large plane of Astroturf, suspended six feet above the ground, bisects the exhibition space. When seen from below, a vast network of roots weaving in and out from underneath this plane is exposed, while the placement of a central opening and a wooden pedestal allow to viewer to perch above this “floating carpet” and discover that actual grass is growing inside.

JAMA-JAMA (José Andrés Matos) was born on August 26,1974 in Guines, Province of Havana, Cuba. He started painting at an early age and has not stopped living for his art ever since. He left Cuba in 2002 for Costa Rica and presently resides in Miami, Florida with his wife and daughter.

ALEX YANES was born in Miami, July 20th 1977. His art is characterized by romanticism, sublime color, content and the deliberate precision of form and line. It is the duality between the conceptual and the graphical that makes his art both inspiring and accessible. Yanes’ art serves as a metaphor for the conflict between reason and imagination and the divided nature of the human spirit.
