When we talk about civic engagement, problem solving, and the future of Miami, we hear the same two questions: where are the young people and who is engaging the next generation of leaders?

To help answer those questions, the New Leaders Council (NLC) Miami invites you to an evening of cocktails and celebration on June 9 from 6 PM to 10 PM at the Woman’s Club of Coconut Grove. Meet the 2016 fellows at our graduation and fundraiser and help us build a more civically engaged Miami!

NLC Miami is one of the premier chapters of a national nonprofit organization whose mission is to recruit, train, promote, and network the next generation of progressive social and political entrepreneurs. We bring a diverse group of rising stars together for a leadership institute that develops their practical skills, focuses their impact work goals, and connects them with local leaders in politics, government, business, education, the arts and sciences, and the nonprofit sector.

With your support, we can continue to plant the seeds for dynamic collaborations among people and organizations that would never have come together but for NLC. We want you to get to know our fellows (past and present) and we know you will be energized by the experience. It takes a village, and Miami is ours. Join us, celebrate, and help us build a community we are all a part of!

Tickets and sponsorship packages are available at a variety of levels. All tickets include open bar during the event (21+)! Take advantage of early bird pricing and purchase your tickets at this link: http://miami.newleaderscouncil.org/cmaddennewleaderscouncilorg/2016_fellows_fundraiser

Terra Group and The Related Group, the development team bringing the Park Grove community to the Coconut Grove neighborhood come 2018, gave back to its future community by sponsoring the kids at Coconut Grove Cares to an evening of fun and sports—over 100 of them.

The pre-construction development, which also happens to be the future home of a key figure from the Miami Heat, rented two buses and purchased over 100 tickets to bring the kids of Coconut Cares to watch the city’s most beloved team.

David Martin, President and Co-founder of Terra Group and Cathy Strafaci, Director of Sales at Park Grove, gave the kids their tickets to the game at the Barnyard at Coconut Grove Cares, who, in turn, presented them with a big thank you card for taking them to the game.

The buses then shuttled the kids off to American Airlines Arena for the Heat game and returned them back to the Barnyard at Coconut Grove Cares following for their parents to then bring them home.

This is the first in a series of efforts for the future residency, Park Grove, to give back to its community.

South Florida celebrated seafood, waterfront living and the start of the stone crab season by way of The Coconut Grove Seafood Festival at Peacock Park. For the third year in a row, event organizers brought together an array of seafood vendors offering bushels of shrimp, oysters, crawfish, lobster, stone crab, fish and clams prepared in a variety of ways.

The well known Casablanca Fish Market overflowed with fish from around the world that folks were able to select, purchase and take home after they had their fill at the festival. The Kitchen Lab featured cooking demos by popular South Florida restaurants.

The event was very family oriented. Children played inside the inflatable pirate village in the Family Fun Zone. There was also VIP Island for those who preferred a more exclusive experience.

As if all this wasn’t enough, the afternoon had a constant stream of live music including calypso, steel drum, island escapism and reggae. The Festival also featured several nautically themed exhibitors showcasing art, jewelry and home decor.

The folks at SWARM have definitely put together another winner!…We can’t wait to be back next year!

Introducing Blue Starlite Mini Urban Drive-In’s “Blue Starlite By The Bay” at Kennedy Park in the Coconut Grove

This September, Blue Starlite Mini Urban Drive-In is setting up its big screen at a new venue, and one with plenty of outdoor intrigue. Situated in the Coconut Grove area, the drive-in’s “Blue Starlite By The Bay” welcomes movie fans to enjoy films on Bayshore Drive in between Miami’s striking Kennedy and Peacock Parks, and for the very first time on the weekends. Blue’s new home is the perfect place for patrons to relax and get their outdoor film fix on while breathing in fresh, waterfront air and reveling in the natural beauty of the surrounding parks.

“Blue Starlite By The Bay” is a collaboration made possible by The City of Miami Parks and Recreation with the help of the Commissioner of Miami, Marc Sarnoff. Blue’s new entertainment escape sits just a few blocks down from Scotty’s Landing and Monty’s Raw Bar and Restaurant—two of Miami’s most well known places for drinks and eats on the water. The car park at this location can host up to 30 vehicles a night, featuring a grassy area near the front of the screen for bikers and walk-in guests. Patrons who wish to secure their space early can do so and enjoy an outing in the park, time on the playground or a walk along the bay before settling into their cars for an evening of film screening fun.

Throughout the first month of fall, Blue Starlite will screen a mix of romance and adventure-packed family films—such as Princess Bride, The Goonies, Grease (the sing along), Alice In Wonderland, The Wizard of Oz and Jaws. In the spirit of Blue Starlite’s cinematic experimentation, the Blue will offer alternative rock’n roll listening options for The Wizard of Oz and Alice In Wonderland with its popular late night Psychedelic Cinema Series. Film lovers can opt to enjoy Pink Floyd’s The Dark Side of the Moon album with The Wizard of Oz or choose to listen to the The Wall soundtrack as they view Alice In Wonderland.

As September comes to a close and Halloween season approaches, Blue Starlite will gear up for its biggest month of the year: October. Fans of the drive-in are encouraged to check the website for more details on upcoming events and screenings at www.miamiurbandrivein.com.

Invest: Miami 2015 is an in-depth economic review of the key issues facing Miami-Dade’s economy featuring the exclusive insights of prominent industry leaders. Invest: Miami is produced with two goals in mind: 1) to provide comprehensive investment knowledge on Miami to external investors and the global business community, and 2) to promote Miami as a place to invest and do business.

The book conducts a deep dive of the top economic sectors in the county (full list: Construction and Real Estate; Trade and Logistics; Transportation; Banking and Finance; Technology and Innovation; Health; Education; Retail; Tourism; Entertainment, Arts and Media; Sports; Environment & Utilities; Legal and Accounting). It analyzes the leading challenges facing the market, as well as covers emerging opportunities for investors, entrepreneurs and innovators.

Over the course of a six-month research period, the Invest: Miami team met with over 200 top senior-level executives in Miami-Dade County in intimate, one-on-one discussions. These executives came from a broad spectrum of industries, including government, and the perspectives collected from these exclusive discussions became the basis of the contents of our inaugural issue. Some noteworthy interviewees include Florida Governor Rick Scott; Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Gimenez; Florida Secretary of Commerce Bill Johnson; Related Group Chairman and CEO Jorge Perez; former U.S. Senator and JPMorgan Chase Southeast U.S. and Latin America Chairman Mel Martinez; Carnival CEO Arnold Donald; Baptist Health South Florida CEO Brian Keeley and 19-time Grammy Award-winning producer Emilio Estefan, to name a few.

17th Annual Gifford Lane Art Stroll in Coconut Grove on Sunday, March 1, 2015. This was our first time and loved it, so much fun, amazing art, great community and wonderful music.  I can’t wait until next year.

“The Gifford Lane Art Stroll was started 17 years ago by a half-dozen artists who lived along this block.  Most of them have now moved away but a hearty band of some thirty neighbors have made the little event a Coconut Grove tradition. They meet on weekends for months to hold planning pot-luck supper gatherings to map each year coming up.”

World’s Smallest Arts Festival Rocks On

Each year the artists gather here beneath the trees. Every year, people flock here for a good time and to grab up the art. And unlike almost any other event in Florida, each year at the end of the day, they give away all the money. They’ve got great karma.

Everything takes place on Gifford Lane along one residential block near the Kirk Munroe tennis courts, between Oak and Day Avenues (3200 block) in Coconut Grove. There will be no vehicular traffic permitted along the lane during the event.

The event features work by seventy artists positioned along the lane with artwork displayed on fences, in front yards, on clotheslines, in trees and on ladders. Some of the finest artists in the region will be in attendance. Residents often describe the Gifford Lane Art Stroll as the “Grove the way the Grove once was.” Neighbor Nathan Kurland, a central organizer of the event for the past eight years, says, “As far as I can tell, the Gifford Lane Art Stroll is Coconut Grove.”

“The thing is,” says Trina Collins, a painter and one of the founders of the Stroll who lives on the block, “at lots of arts festivals, artists are primarily interested in just having their work seen. But at the Gifford Lane Art Stroll, artists come to sell. The price is right. The quality’s good. You see tons of people going up the lane with a new treasure tucked under their arm.”

It is a freewheeling art marketplace. Sculpture, portraits, seascapes, landscapes, jewelry, tile mosaics, large abstract paintings, photography, mixed media, found art objects, and several art forms that as yet have no names—it is all here and readily available.

Each year artists apply to the Stroll to be included and each year there is a waiting list. A request also goes out to artists for submissions to be considered for the annual poster. The entire planning committee of 30 residents selects the winner. This year’s honor goes to multi-award winning artist Eileen Seitz, a NYC-born, long-time Groveite. Eileen’s artwork is seen internationally and is visible throughout the Grove—from her hand-painted Ambassador kiosks in the Village Center to her collaborative contribution to the Children’s Mosaic of glittering underwater tilework on the side of the U.S. Post Office here.

The live music at the Stroll provides the perfect soundtrack for the afternoon—when it is loud, people dance in the street; and when it sways gently, people chat and stroll the lane. It is nonstop good times. This year, featured performers appearing for their sixth year at the Stroll will be regional favorites, the high energy folk rock tunesmiths Solar Dogs. Band members are Eric Wagner, Zip Robertson, Bill Kunz, and Robert Grabowski. Solar Dogs strikes the perfect tone of sweetness and good vibrations that the Stroll crowd loves. Who could resist dancing when these lads light it up?

Coconut Grove music legend Bobby Ingram will be performing his wonderful solo vocals and guitar. Bobby has performed with David Crosby, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Jimmy Buffet, Fred Neil, Gail Garnet and many others. We are truly honored to have Bobby back performing at the Stroll. Also featured this year will be popular Grove musician Ronnie Brooks in his first Stroll appearance.

Each and every year, the Gifford Lane Art Stroll gives away all of its profits to Coconut Grove charities. A percentage of every piece of art sold, and all of the proceeds from contributions for the now-famous (written about in The New York Times, Miami Herald, and The Miami New Times) cucumber punch, not to mention substantial funds from the sale of delicious food selections goes directly to charity. Over the last sixteen years, the Stroll has donated all of their money– more than $40,000– to two Grove charities, the St. Stephen’s AIDS Ministry and the St. Alban’s Child Enrichment Center in the Grove Village West.

The true heart and soul of the Gifford Lane Art Stroll are some thirty neighbors who each year meet over potluck dinners to undertake all of the many small details that make each year a success. Everyone is a volunteer, including Founding Director Trina Collins. This year, Barbara Tejada, an oil painter and herself director of the Grove House Artists, is the Art Stroll Facilitator responsible for coordinating all of the details of the event with Trina Collins and Velvet Rothe, the Stroll’s government relations coordinator.

Peggy Quattro, a marketing professional who volunteers with the Stroll, says there are many art forms included in the Gifford Lane Art Stroll, but one of the most important is “the art of commun-ity.” Participating artist, Uta, says, “I can’t think of a sweeter party that fuses art, music and joy.” Jugglers and a bounce house are always big draws for families with children.

This year, for the first time, will feature free monitored bike valet parking sponsored by Bike Coconut Grove on the swale at the intersection of Gifford Lane and Oak Avenue. Simply leave your bike with the bike valet, take a numbered ticket (the other half of the ticket is attached to your bike), and enjoy the Stroll knowing your bike is being watched in a secure setting.

The 17th Annual Gifford Lane Art Stroll will delight those in attendance on Sunday, March 1st, from 12 until 5:00 p.m. in Coconut Grove under the beautiful trees among the welcoming artists along sweet Gifford Lane.

Photographs of St. Stephen’s Art Show on 2/15/15

St. Stephen’s Art Show on Sunday, February 15, 2015.

About St. Stephen’s Art Show:  “Art is in the Heart - What began as a hot dog and refreshment stand on St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church property during the weekend of the Coconut Grove Arts Festival has blossomed into a top ranked outdoor arts and fine crafts festival in its own right. Most recently ranked 8th in the country in Sunshine Artist Magazine’s “Best 200 Fine Art Shows”, the St. Stephen’s Art & Craft Show plays an important role in the South Florida Art Scene that takes place in Coconut Grove over all three days of Presidents’ Day Weekend.

The 2014 Show, held annually on Presidents’ Day Weekend, takes place Saturday, February 15th through Monday, February 17th, 2014 9:30 am to 6:00 pm. Visitors will enjoy the artwork of over 160 renowned fine artists and craft people, an international food court, children’s activity area, an authentic English tea room and musical entertainment, all on the shady campus of St. Stephen’s in the heart of Coconut Grove.

The Art Show is St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church’s longest standing cultural outreach event. Hundreds of volunteers from the greater Miami community help make the event a success. Beverage sales proceeds have allowed the Art Show to contribute more than $55,000 to the St. Stephen’s AIDS Ministry.

The Art Show plays an important role in helping St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church achieve its vision of becoming “The Heart of the Grove” by offering a variety of cultural, spiritual, entertainment and public service programming to the community. St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church invites all people to join in a life of worship, mercy, justice, learning and service.”

“Produced by the Coconut Grove Arts and Historical Association, Inc., a non-profit community organization under the direction of a board of directors and full-time staff, the Coconut Grove Arts Festival® showcases the works of 360 internationally recognized artists who are selected from nearly 1,300 applicants. Jurors evaluate the artist’s work and displays to select participants in such categories as mixed media, painting, photography, digital art, printmaking & drawing, watercolor, claywork, glass, fiber, jewelry & metalwork, sculpture and wood. Proceeds help fund year-round arts programs, which create a positive impact on our community and touch the lives of many throughout the year. Recent initiatives include the “New & Emerging Artists” category, which allows artists ages 18-29 to not only display their work for the very first time at an outdoor fine arts festival, but also partake in a hands-on Arts Symposium and gain access to a carefully-matched Experienced Festival Artist in their genre.”

What would a festival be without some friendly competition?! Grillin’ in the Grove has lined up two contests. Rem Koolhaas’ highly anticipated Residences at Park Grove just added more extras to the extraordinary, as developers Terra Group and The Related Group unveiled the secret to the perfect life during a private celebration with Colin Cowie, and first view of Jaume Plensa’s sculpture series “The Three Poets” in its permanent new home in Coconut Grove.

Cowie, known for his lavish international productions and celebrity clientele like Oprah Winfrey and Tom Cruise, is creating the ultimate sensory experience as the official “Lifestyle Curator” for Park Grove residents, with exquisitely good taste and touches, from the reception at valet, to the chilled hand towels and sun products served poolside on silver trays.
“The experience will be in a constant state of change, as the day becomes night, the music that is playing, the volume at which it plays, how the lights are set, and the fragrance in the air—it will all evolve,” said Cowie, as he toasted guests. “These are just a sliver of the nuances that we will orchestrate to create the aura of Park Grove.”
Nearly 1,000 guests enjoyed an elaborate production with lush greenery throughout, true to the Coconut Grove and Park Grove aesthetic—along with posh lounge areas, flowing champagne and even a full coffee bar—peeks into the sublime lifestyle the property will boast.
The Plensa sculpture series has traveled the globe with installations in public spaces before the developers acquired it for Park Grove. Plensa is best known for his public, monumental figurative sculptures that can be seen across the globe from Calgary to Dubai—The Three Poets continues the international artist’s theme and is visible to the public along Bayshore Drive, internally lit and sitting atop 20-foot poles overlooking the bay.

Notable Guests: Colin Cowie, national authority on wedding and event planning and amenities curator for Park Grove; Pedro Martin, CEO & Cofounder of Terra Group; David Martin, President and Co-founder of Terra Group; Jorge Perez, President and CEO The Related Group; Carlos Rosso, President of the Condo Division at The Related Group; Patrick Campbell, Vice President at The Related Group; Horacio de Leon, President Douglas Elliman Development Marketing;

Photographs of Mad Hatter Arts Festival 2014 at The Barnacle Historic State Park on 11/15/14

Mad Hatter Arts Festival 2014 at The Barnacle Historic State Park on Saturday, November 15, 2014.

Art Show: The Mad Hatter Arts Festival is a fun, zany art and music festival, held each autumn in the historic village of Coconut Grove, located on lovely Biscayne Bay. “The Grove” has a deep Bohemian history of quirky artists and musicians. In fact, the name of the festival draws its inspiration from a popular 1970s song Coconut Grove written by John Sebastian of the internationally famous group, the Lovin’ Spoonful.

The two-day event celebrates its tenth year on Saturday, November 15 and Sunday, November 16, with artists exhibiting on the grounds of The Barnacle Historic State Park and on the sidewalks along Main Highway. Other components of the Festival can be seen around the Grove. Bring your friends, bring your family, and join the fun “…in Coconut Grove.”

Happiness is a buzzword that’s everywhere these days. But what does it really mean? Is it just about smiley faces and “positive thinking”? Can you really, truly get happier and stay happier? Hannah Sentenac will answer your burning questions in her heart-to-heart talk about the science of happiness, beating depression and living a joyful life at the Bookstore in the Grove, Nov 25th.

Despite our society’s increasing material wealth, more people than ever are bogged down by depression, anxiety and a feeling of alienation. As a Happiness Advocate, Hannah speaks about happiness, embarks on happiness-focused projects and writes about happiness for publications including the Huffington Post, MindBodyGreen, Live Happy magazine and her blog, HannahGetsHappy.com.

Expect a wildly entertaining talk with plenty of audience participation; interactive, science-based exercises to get you started on your happiness journey; a happiness reading list and loads of amusing anecdotes. Lauren Shapiro
and
Maitejosune Urrecgaga

The ceremonial entrance will leave you charmed by Lady Lauren Shapiro and Mrs. Maitejosune Urrechaga. The two artist have invited you to a dwelling place much like “Neverland”

The two queens of Triumphant Spells share a love for magical and mystical realms. Be ready to experience drawings, sculptures, installations and what not’s. the unusual few and widely separated characters of their work will give light to the fine incantation.

Mrs. Maitejosune Urrechagas artwork has been displayed national and internationally since 2005. Her DIY attitude is very compelling and very much alive which audiences continue to respond with enthusiasm.

She has grown to fancy towards group projects, which usually include oddball outcomes such as designing mini refrigerators to pimp my kart to the mind the snails project which ran during Miami’s Art Basel on Dec of 2006-2007, which she received a nod from the Miami new Times in their Best of Issue. TO her musical performance Pocket of Lollipops that joined forces with her husband and received top 5 song in South Florida.

She has curated, exhibited and performed at various art spaces and live music venues around the US. Including Dorsch Gallery, SwampSpace, Hollywood Art and Culture Center, Verge Art Fair, ArtFormz Gallery, and the traditional rock settings.
She was one of three artist chosen to paint the 7-foot alligator sculptures for Sawgrass Mills “Paying tribute to woman”

Lady Lauren Shapiro
is a South Florida native, and her artwork contains elements of both nature and the supernatural. Living in Florida has influenced her work through an appreciation and deep fascination with the ocean and all of its life forms. Lauren holds a BFA from Florida Atlantic University, and is currently a Graduate Fellow pursing an MFA in ceramics at the University of Miami.
She has fully immersed herself in the South Florida artist community as both teacher and artist. Previous to applying for candidacy of a Masters at the University of Miami, Lauren worked as an outreach instructor and in-house workshop leader at the Boca Museum of art and ceramics instructor at the Boca Raton Art School.
Her work in this series is inspired by metamorphosis, the connection between humans and nature, and how the actions of one will affect the other. The imagery that can be found in the artwork includes textures in nature, symbols from legends and folklore, as well as natural science and the microscopic world. Also turning to her dreams and subconscious thoughts she relies on intuition to guide her through the development of the work.
Her work has been exhibited at Museums and galleries in South Florida, to name a few: the Projects Space in FAT Village, The Lowe Museum, Girls Club, Locust Projects, and she has work in the private collection of Francie Bishop Good.

Biggest Names in Architecture Reveal the Future of Design at The Residences at Park Grove

OMA architect Shohei Shigematsu and landscape architect Enzo Enea lead design talk

Miami (October 15, 2014)–A crowd of 250 top-tier brokers, buyers and tastemakers gathered to experience two of the most prominent global design talents for a look inside the visionary designs of the Residences at Park Grove, where Shohei Shigematsu from OMA and Enzo Enea blend the past and future of Coconut Grove. New renderings of the property were revealed for the first time last week, showing off the properties’ dazzling, uninterrupted views of the marina, landscape and idyllic Biscayne Bay. The towers’ distinct facades optimize these views from every angle, allowing for an abundance of natural light for its residents, coupled with maximum privacy between units. During the design talk, Shigematsu and Enea spoke about how their designs look at urbanistic and historical elements specific to the Grove’s existing climate and culture, such as the artists and musicians that occupy it, the greenery surrounding it, and the culture alive and thriving within it, enhancing the sense of place with the idiom: integrate, not decorate.

The hour-long discussion was moderated by Ted Loos, a design expert and regular contributor of Architectural Digest and hosted by co-developers of the property: David Martin, President of Terra Group and Carlos Rosso, President of Condo Development The Related Group.

Notable Guests: Enzo Enea, landscape architect; Shohei Shigematsu, OMA Architect; David Martin, President of Terra Group; Carlos Rosso, President Condo Development The Related Group; Patrick Campbell, Vice President The Related Group; Ted Loos, contributor of Architectural Digest and moderator of the discussion.

Sprung Beer Festival 2014

Sprung Beer Fest Unleashes the Fun

Sprung065

When March rolls around and the rest of the country is still wallowing in their miserable frozen tundra existence, Miami is having one of its most festive months. While most Miamians are enthralled by “molly-fied” Ultra Music Fest & Winter Music Conference, debaucherous Spring Break, and March Madness tourney brackets, we actually get the most amped up about Sprung! This past Saturday, March 8th on a literal gorgeous f*cking day, the unlimited beer tasting was packed with lively people getting drunk in such blissful harmony. In a land laden with $500 bottles of $30 vodka surrounded by bottle whores and douchebags, Sprung brings out the coolest, funnest and most laidback South Florida peeps.

We got way too Sprung way too early to sample all of the beers and compose a best of list. But one beer really made syrupy delectable love with our discerning palates which we affectionately call Waffle Cider. The unimaginative marketing department at Woodchuck Hard Cider for some reason decided to call it Spring Cider and, unfortunately, made it a limited release. Make no mistake, this bottle contains a magical cider that tastes like an exquisite brown sugared, maple syrup liquid waffle goodness. Part of the reason we write is because we love to share things we love, as evidenced by the close to 50 people we rounded up to sample it.  ’Twas the best cider we ever tasted and it was adored by almost all. If they change its name to Waffle Cider and throw some marketing money behind it, this could become one of the most popular ciders ever. We are still waiting on our free Keg of it for being the best free brand ambassadors Woodchuck has ever had.

Sprung043

Our usual favorite Florida Beer local breweries like the Celestial Funky Buddha, Holy Mackerel, M.I.A, and Opus Ales were also on hand slinging their unique and scrumptious libations. There was also the Orange Pride Games Arena & Bar, which included Corn Hole, Giant Jenga, Beer Pong, Mega Twister and Human Bowling. The following are some of our other favorites of the day:

Cigar City Jai Alai India Pale Ale  – it’s no accident this beer was rated a whopping 99%by ratebeer.com. Poured at the tent manned by Kush, the new amazing craft beer and burger haven that just opened in Wynwood from the Lokal creators. We kept going back for more — and we don’t even like IPA’s.

Sprung148

Holy Mackerel’s Panic Attack – This Belgian style ale with a subtle hint of spice felt like cool, smooth silk enveloping your tongue. So smooth, in fact, we were surprised to find the ABV clocking in at 10%.

Sprung149

Another fest highlight was the incredible performance by cover band Band Suo. The remarkably talented band and hot female lead singer had the crowd participating in a huge drunken dance party with their awesome covers of Pharell’s “Happy”, the Isley Brothers “Shout” and Bruno Mars’s “Treasure.”

suo

We always have a great time at Sprung and this year kpe the fub streak alive. We are already looking forward to getting smashed at Grovetoberfest in October.

Sprung! Spring Beer Festival 2014 at Peacock Park on Saturday, March 8, 2014.

“Sprung!, the free-spirited, sister festival of Grovetoberfest, kicked Spring into action with their craft beer festival on Saturday, March 8th. The unlimited beer tasting will feature over 150 Spring and Summer ales in the heart of Coconut Grove from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Peacock Park. “

Featuring:  Sierra Nevada, Brooklyn Brewery, Kona, Magic Hat, Shiner, Shipyard, Harpoon, Blue Moon and many others will showcase their spring and summer offerings. Sprung! will also host a complete lineup of Florida beers from Schnebley, Cigar City, Tequesta Brewing and Florida Beer along with local breweries such as Funky Buddha, Wynwood Brewing, M.I.A, and Opus Ales. Including a complete list of ciders such as Crispin Cider, Magner’s and Woodchuck. Beer enthusiasts also were treated to a selection not available in South Florida, and in keeping with tradition, the homebrew section showcased brews created by locals who are passionate about their beer. Sprung! also bought back the Orange Pride Games Arena & Bar — a dedicated game section, which includes Corn Hole, Giant Jenga, Beer Pong, Mega Twister, Human Bowling and a few other surprises. In addition to Bougainvillea’s Live Music Stage, there were plenty of vendors offering a wide range of food and the Gold Coast Beverage Distributor Culinary Experience, which will pair beer with the talents of some of South Florida’s favorite chefs.”

It’s the Grove the way the Grove once was. The 16th annual celebration of the original Gifford Lane Art Stroll will burst into colors, smiles, and rocking music along one usually sleepy little block of Gifford Lane between Oak and Day Avenues (3200 block) on Sunday, March 2nd from 12 noon to five o’clock.

The event features more than seventy visual artists displaying their works on the fences and in the front yards along the demure little lane, including a number of the finest artists in the region.

Once again this year, all of the participating artists at the Art Stroll will be giving a percentage of their sales to two Grove charities—this percentage will be added to contributions made by the public and neighbors living on the block. The two benefiting Grove charities are the St. Stephen’s AIDS Ministry and the St. Alban’s Day Care Center in the Village West. Each year, the Art Stroll donates 100% of the proceeds to the charities. More than $35,000 has been contributed to Grove charities since the Art Stroll began.

The Coconut Grove Arts Festival® will celebrate 50 years of history and tradition in the arts, featuring internationally acclaimed Brazilian Artist Romero Britto as this year’s poster artist. The Arts Festival will host more than 380 international artists, all exhibiting their finest work. In addition to world-class art, entertainment will include live musical performances by pop sensation Cris Cab and culinary demonstrations by local chef favorites such as Giorgio Rapicavoli of Miami’s Eating House.

The Coconut Grove Arts Festival® celebrates 50 years of culture and tradition this President’s Day weekend by enticing and satisfying Miami’s imagination and appetite for visual, culinary and performing arts. The 50th anniversary three-day event promises to bring the most talented and creative artists from all over the world to Coconut Grove on February 16-18, 2013. In honor of the festival’s half-century milestone, the festival committee has selected world-renowned Brazilian artist Romero Britto to create the official poster for the 2013 festival.

“Coconut Grove was home to my very first studio in Miami, and I am truly humbled to be a part of the 50 year celebration of one of Miami’s oldest tradition in the arts,” said Britto. Despite being an international sensation, Britto is no stranger to the Coconut Grove Arts Festival. In 2007, Britto first collaborated with the festival by creating its official poster. His work, “Coconut Grove Bay,” was inspired by the city of Miami‘s beauty, beaches, and tranquility. The painting serves as a token of Britto’s appreciation to the vibrant city and artistic culture of the area.

“Our festival is truly a celebration of the all forms of the arts, introducing masters in all mediums and genres,” said Monty Trainer, president of the Arts Festival. “Locals and visiting guests alike will appreciate the internationally celebrated visual, musical and culinary collections.”

Complementing the visual arts on display will be the musical talents of Miami-native pop-star Cris Cab, who will perform his fusion of pop, reggae and soul on the main stage in Peacock Park. At only 19 years old, Cab’s recent accolades include being the mentee of internationally acclaimed producer Pharell Williams, recording alongside Wyclef Jean and supporting acts like O.A.R. Matisyahu, T-Pain, and Gym Class Heroes. He was also recently named by MTV as one of “The Most Criminally Overlooked Artists of 2012,” with his recently released full-length mix-tape “Echo Boom” receiving more than 300,000 downloads last year.

In addition to the entertainment, festival attendees can also satisfy their appetites for gourmet cuisine in the popular Culinary Pavilion. This area of the festival invites nationally renowned chefs to prepare their famous specialty dishes. This year’s chefs will represent the hottest restaurants and hotels from South Florida, including popular local chef Giorgio Rapicavoli, founder of the pop-up restaurant Eating House, and winner of The Food Network’s “Chopped”. Chef Douglas Rodriguez of de Rodriguez Cuba, Chef John Richards of TUYO and the Short Chef™, among many others, will also be participating in this year’s festival.

Born in Panama of Chinese parents, Mai Yap has been able to magically blend East and West on canvas.

Within the walls of her parents’ home, she was immersed in the beauty, balance and perfection of millennial traditions passed on from one generation to another. Outside those walls, her senses were overcome by the varied colors, sounds and energy of the tropics. Panama’s natural surroundings provided the perfect artistic inspiration.

Ms. Yap’s artistry led her to pursue the focus of her current work, to change the way people look at flowers –from flowers as common products of nature, to flowers as unique miracles of the earth. Through her technique of “extreme close ups,” she tries to compel the viewer to observe flowers in great detail.

Ms. Yap holds a B.A. in Journalism and Graphic Design from the University of Georgia. She is currently teaching at Fairchild Tropical Botanical Gardens.

“The color in my flowers surpasses shape and form. I hope that they will delight the viewer’s senses and enlighten the mind, bringing great enjoyment.”

Pauline A. Goldsmith has worked in the global bio-pharmaceutical industry for over 37 years, in Europe and the U.S. She now runs her own consulting company, Goldsmith Consulting, in Coconut Grove providing business development and project management skills to small and medium-sized companies. Born in the U.K., she has lived in Philadelphia, Boston and Miami.

Ms. Goldsmith is active in many volunteer positions in the local art world, both in the theater and the visual arts. She strives to help others understand the joy the arts can impart. Her love of watercolors and botanical art are a consuming part of her life.

“My love of South Florida’s lush tropical vegetation has encouraged me to use watercolors to translate their beauty to paper, so that it can be shared with everyone. In my attempts to render these plant likenesses into visual art, I have become attached to their subtle transformations in different lights.”

Highway to Hops with Miami Brew Bus

First, we met in Coconut Grove at Lokal for a nice long ride to Funky Buddha Brewery in Oakland Park, Florida. Next stop is M.I.A Brewing, and lastly at Wynwood Brewing.  Then, we finish off back at Lokal after having worked up a serious appetite from all the beers.

About the breweries on the tour, here’s a description from the Miami Brew Bus website:

FUNKY BUDDHA BREWERY

Founded in 2010, Funky Buddha Brewery began as a brewpub, lounge, and hookah bar in Boca Raton, Florida. Initially brewing on a small, 40-gallon system, the brewpub began creating truly unique culinary-inspired beers, reaching worldwide acclaim such as 27th best brewery in the world according to RateBeer! Three short years later Buddha opened its 20,000 sq ft production brewery in the heart of South Florida, focusing on the continued use of big, bold flavors. You can find their flagships beers Hop Gun IPA and Floridian Hefeweizen on tap at the brewery year-round, and if you’re lucky enough to try a limited release you certainly won’t forget it! No Crusts Peanut Butter & Jelly Brown Ale, Blueberry Cobbler Ale, and Passionfruit Berlinerweiss are a few of our favorites. Just sayin’!

M.I.A. BREWING CO.

A very special part of our tour brings you to M.I.A. Brewing where you will be able to witness a brewery being born! M.I.A. Brewing has begun construction and estimates a January 2014 opening. Although the brewery hasn’t become operational they’ve already made a name for themselves at beer festivals and special events with their flagships Domino Pilsner, Freestyle Wheat Pale Ale, Castaway Kolsche, and the M.I.A. IPA. Yes, there will be beer and yes, hardhats are required!

WYNWOOD BREWING CO.

Miami’s first production brewery recently opened in the heart of the Wynwood Arts District. What used to be a warehouse and manufacturing district, Wynwood is now home to one of the largest street art exhibits in the world. Following the theme of art in beer making it was extremely important for the founders of Wynwood Brewing to be located in this exceptional neighborhood. Brewed with Miami’s hot weather in mind, their flagship beers, Pop’s porter, La Rubia Blond Ale, and Wynwood IPA, are light bodied, and crisp, ah makes us wanna go to the beach!

Celebrity Art Series II presents “BLACK: The Art of Color” Featuring the Art of Danny Simmons brother of music mogul Russell Simmons

November 22, 2013 – Miami, FL. – Art Week Miami & Art Basel Miami Beach expands to Historic Coconut Grove with Celebrity Art Series II from December 3rd – 8th at KROMA, featuring modern art by African American, Haitian, and African artists. The exhibit and cultural programs showcase the talent of featured artists: Danny Simmons (who with his music mogul brother Russell Simmons, (co- founded Rush Philanthropic Arts Foundation and established Def Comedy Jam). Paintings by Andre Guichard, curator and co-owner of Gallery Guichard Fine Art gallery in Chicago and national curator of a nationwide artist contest with over 10,000 art submissions will also be featured. “I have been attending Art Basel since its inception and I noticed the lack of diversity in the presence of black art galleries and attendees,” said Que Simmons, Celebrity Art Series Founder. With the encouragement and financial support of friends, I debuted Celebrity Art Series in Wynwood in 2012, and I’m delighted to present Series II, which will showcase some of the most talented African American artists of our time, while contributing to charities in our community.
Entrance to the events is free. However all of the art pieces are available for purchase. Proceeds from the art sales will benefit the Women’s International Film and Art Festival’s [501(c)(3)] initiative “Reel Girls: Real Women.” Added to the event is a spin on the annual “Taste of the Grove,” in which each nightly reception is sponsored by a local Grove restaurant with samples of their signature appetizers.

Dignitaries, art collectors, and the black arterati have been invited to join this high-quality exciting week of events in historic Coconut Grove. KROMA is located at 3670 Grand Avenue, Coconut Grove, Florida 33133. Everyone is welcome.

Miami Reggae Festival at Peacock Park on  Saturday, November 23, 2013.  What a wonderful event; the music was amazing along with the great crowd, food and vendors what a great event.

The Reason:  “As Rockers Movement move forward, we begin a new element to feeding the world vision as needs of the poor increase at home and abroad. Countries and cultures amass daily more stress, starvation, inhumane conditions, whilst at home wasted resources and manpower needed to address worldwide starvation depend on votes and self-gratification. It’s not merely hunger, it’s starvation and the world feels it. Because of you, our audience, Rockers Movement give hope to those in desperate need. You do something bold each time, you join us in support to end extreme hunger and poverty. As Nelson Mandela said it’s not natural it is man made and we can end it. We can overcome it by acts of human kindness. Your ongoing support extends a hand of fellowship and encouragement to those whose lives are touched by your donations and consideration. As our effort to represent you, the Rockers Movement audience continue worldwide, we do our part in Miami with our call to action on November 23rd with the Miami Reggae Festival. Our sincere thanks to those who have so thoughtfully provided your ongoing gift of support and understanding your aid in leaving a legacy of love to last for generations. On behalf of all who have helped, thank you. We look forward to a continued partnership as we seek to bring benefactors and recipients to a closer union. From the bottom of Rockers Movement hearts…THANK YOU so much. One Love, One Heart, One Aim, One Destiny. Keep on Rocking!”

We enjoyed live performances, traditional clay lamps, firecrackers and complimentary henna application.  A Passage to India is a pop-up Indian restaurant at the Ritz-Carlton Coconut Grove that was open for a limited time.

Last year’s Art Basel Week kicked off with a much talked-about tribute to Miami’s arts pioneers – alongside the city’s new cultural visionaries – with the retrospective of visionary artist Martin Kreloff’s 1976 “Miami Says Art” (which 36 years ago brought together the city’s then up-and-coming arts luminaries to look into his camera and exclaim “ART”). During last year’s Art Basel Week, Kreloff reunited cast members from his original 1976 show alongside Miami’s current crop of cultural champions, all coming together to help create a new time-capsule honoring Miami’s arts evolution, and providing a window into the city’s bright future as an art destination. The photos and resulting artwork have been kept under lock-and-key for a whole year, and the much-anticipated installation will be revealed for the first time at a preview reception for the media on Monday, December 2, at noon at the Mayfair Hotel in Coconut Grove.

Miami Says Art 2 features a wall series of portraits by Kreloff, featuring some of the original 1976 cast alongside Miami’s new museum directors, gallerists, performing arts leaders and directors of cultural institutions (all once again looking at the camera and proclaiming “ART!”). Kreloff has also collaborated with Miami artist Gustavo Oviedo on a black-box installation featuring video, projections and sound art, “Art Euphoria” melding photos, original artwork, video and sound recordings for an experiential walk-through time capsule.

The original 1976 “Miami Says Art” cast included: American figurative artist Alex Katz; Arnold L. Lehman (now the director of the Brooklyn Museum, who presented the 1976 exhibition while then serving as director of Miami‘s Metropolitan Museum and Art Center); philanthropists and collectors Ruth and Richard Shack, and Martin Z. Marguiles; Judy Drucker, cultural impresaria; socialite/designer Gloria Vanderbilt; publicist Charlie Cinnamon; Miami arts advocate Margarita Cano; gallerists Dorothy Blau, Gloria Luria and Virginia Miller (co-presenter of the 1976 exhibition); abstractionist Lynne Golob Gelfman; and the Founding Director of the Museum of Contemporary Art in North Miami, Lou Anne Colodny.

Last year’s tribute reprised the original 1976 art happening, gathering more than 100 arts leaders alongside original cast members, including: Miami-Dade Cultural Affairs Chairman Adolfo Henriques, and Executive Director Monty Trainer (also president of the Coconut Grove Arts Festival); director of the Brooklyn Museum Arnold Lehman; New World Symphony CEO Howard Herring; president/CEO of the Arsht Center John Richard; Dr. Carol Damian, director of the Patricia and Phillip Frost Museum at FIU; Wolfsonian director Cathy Leff; Dr. Jeffrey Hodgson, New World School of the Arts Provost; Ruth Shack; Dahlia Morgan; Swannee DiMare, Frances Sevilla-Sacasa; Dennis Edwards; Carmen Betancourt-Lewis; Deborah Hoffman; Harvey Burstein; Roberta and Eric Fliss; Marc Levin; artist Lynn Gelfman; gallerist Virginia Miller; Mary Luft; Rosie Gordon-Wallace; Beth Boone; Michael and Mary Ellen Peyton; Iran Issa-Khan; Maria del Valle; Susan Caraballo; George Neary; Octavio Campos; Jane Wooldridge and Robert Rosenberg. Kreloff and Oviedo are asking last year’s participants to send in voice-recordings via their mobile phones, saying the word “ART,” to incorporate into the black box installation as sound art.

The artist Martin Kreloff says: “After many years of living and working on the West Coast, Miami welcomed me back with open arms, as if it was urging me to return home … and what a homecoming it has become! From the sleepy burg I first encountered when I moved to Miami in 1967, the city has exploded into a vibrant and vital cultural destination that pulsates with the glow of a world class art scene. Playing off the original concept of the 1976 show, we photographed Miami’s cultural and artistic leaders (both past and present) last year during Art Basel week, jubilantly proclaiming the word “ART!” From that jumping off point, I’ve taken the photos and added the playful, colorful psychedelic patterns that were utilized in the artwork from the 1976 show. I’ve also collaborated with Miami artist Gustavo Oviedo on a black box multimedia installation. What will this year’s Miami Says Art be like? All I can say is … Miami: You really know how to say ART!.” Said the General Manager of The Mayfair Hotel & Spa Miami, Axel Gasser: “The Mayfair Hotel & Spa is proud to kick off Art Basel Week with Miami Says Art-2, also launching the Mayfair Hotel’s 30th anniversary yearlong celebrations and recognizing Miami’s cultural history and the future of our art destination in true Mayfair style.”

Miami Reggae Festival

Miami, FL 33133

The Miami Reggae Festival and its organizers, Rockers Movement, have partnered with the non-‐profit organization TECHO to raise funds, food and awareness for residents living in poverty. The November 23rd event held at Coconut Grove’s Peacock Park will unify Miami’s diverse community through music while donating a portion of all ticket proceeds plus food collected at the event to aid Dade County residents living in poverty.

Music has always had the power to unite and inspire humanitarianism. “The Miami Reggae Festival takes it to the top, offering the highest quality of performance, political ambience and service to community available anywhere, “ says Carole Boyce Davies, Writer & Cornell University Professor of English and Africana Studies. “Truly international in orientation, there is no other place where one can experience such a rich presentation of the best in reggae talent. Miami proves again, this time through its Reggae Festival, that it is the place to be for the internationalizing of Caribbean culture.”

In reflection of South Florida’s diverse cultural heritage, the Miami Reggae Festival brings together music from around the world including Stephen Marley from Jamaica, Tiken Jah Fakoly from Africa’s Ivory Coast, Cultura Profética from Puerto Rico, Natiruts from Brazil, Midnite from St. Croix USVI, Gondwana from Chile, and many more -‐ a full musical lineup is below.

Attendees of the Miami Reggae Festival are asked to bring non-‐perishable and canned food items for donation in observance of Thanksgiving. The rations collected at the event will be organized that night by TECHO volunteers and immediately re-‐ distributed the following day to families in need in Coconut Grove, Overtown and Liberty City by artists, volunteers, and staff members of TECHO and Rockers Movement.

Subsequently, a portion of proceeds from ticket sales will be donated to TECHO -‐ a youth led non-‐profit organization at work in 19 countries including Latin American and the Caribbean. Through the joint work of families living in extreme hardship and youth volunteers, TECHO seeks to overcome poverty. “Rockers Movement will amplify our message and continue to scream that Miami is committed to overcoming poverty,” says Nicolas Berardi, US CEO of TECHO. To date, the organization has mobilized more than half a million youth volunteers and built over 3,000 houses for families living in Latin American slums.

Rockers Movement, in association with Fertile Earth Foundation, Unity is Change, Dade Recycling, Artecology Organization & Lady Green Recycling, is proud to promote the Zero Waste Initiative at Miami Reggae Festival. In a committed effort towards sustainability, the Reduce, Reuse, & Recycle model will be implemented to prevent trash and organic materials from going into landfills and incinerators, thus diverting over 20 tons of waste and greatly reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The festival will also work food vendors to collect edible food items to feed people and food scraps to feed animals.

Miami Reggae Festival is a family-‐friendly event featuring an artisan village of visual arts and handicrafts; various culinary vendors; an “Artecology Experience,” offering interactive games for kids about sustainability, healthy living seminars and workshops, including AEROGA ® Yoga in the Park, meditation, and dance; plus drum sessions, a bike valet, and so much more.

Tickets for Miami Reggae Festival are currently on sale and can be purchased online and through various South Florida locations. General admission tickets are $45; VIP tickets are $75 and include access to a VIP lounge with private bathrooms. Kids 12 and younger are free when accompanied by a paid adult. The Mad Hatter Arts Festival celebrates its 9th year with a return to The Barnacle and along the sidewalks of Main Highway. This juried event features artists of all types of media. Chalk It Up! the street painting will be nearly on Commodore Plaza. Street painting dates to the 16th century Italy when artists traveled from town to town transforming streets in to temporary art galleries. This truly ephermeral art form is experiencing a 21st century renaissance. The theme is Through The Looking Glass.

As always, music is a highlight of the Mad Hatter, plus there is a participatory drum circle, various hat contests to enter, and activities for kids of all ages. Food will be available for purchase from The Barnacle Society’s concession stand or venture into the Village for drinks and treats at participating restaurants and eateries. Return with a picnic to The Barnacle on Saturday evening when the gates reopen at 6pm for a special screening of the classic, Alice In Wonderland. Movie begins at 7pm with no entry after 7:15. Movie tickets are $5 per person for ages 6 and over; $3 for ages 2-5 and free for ages under 2.

The Mad Hatter Arts Festival is a fun, zany art and music festival, held each autumn in the historic village of Coconut Grove, located on lovely Biscayne Bay. “The Grove” has a deep Bohemian history of quirky artists and musicians. In fact, the name of the festival draws its inspiration from a popular 1970s song Coconut Grove written by John Sebastian of the internationally famous group, the Lovin’ Spoonful.

The two-day event celebrates its ninth year on Saturday, November 16 and Sunday, November 17, with artists exhibiting on the grounds of The Barnacle Historic State Park and on the sidewalks along Main Highway. Other components of the Festival can be seen around the Grove. Bring your friends, bring your family, and join the fun “…in Coconut Grove.”

Grovetoberfest 2013 at Peacock Park

Grovetoberfest is Always a Wild Pleasure

by Ari Kane.

Beer is fun! Beer drinkers are usually chill and when you put them all together at a festival, it almost always equates to a gay ole time. Miami Beer fests are great ways to break away from the uppity restaurant and club scene and get trashed with legit, down-to-earth, jovial people. Grovetoberfest returned to Coconut Grove for its third year in a row hosting over 200 great beers from across the world and over 7,000 attendees . In addition to kick ass beers and patrons, there was also the Kitchen Lab where attendees learned from award-winning chefs how to cook with beer and a Beer Tasting 101 hosted by FIU’s vaunted Beer Academy. The VIP section had a scrumptious rotation of food and special VIP beers.

While we were not fortunate (or degenerate) enough to taste every beer we will share our Top 11 (because top 10 is sooo played out), from order of “utter adulation” to “we like it.” :)

(Note to readers: we do not like bitter IPAs but prefer unique, exotic and flavorful beer):

1) Funky Buddha Brewery Blueberry Cobbler  Delicious and fucking creative, Funky Buddha is one of our fave brewers EVER.  You can find spots that host their exquisite beer on their website. The Blueberry Cobbler Ale is a copiously, blueberried glass of goodness, generously dosed with real vanilla beans, quality imported cinnamon, and — of course — whole fruit. Could not agree with their description more “A sip is akin to a bite of fresh baked blueberry pie.”

2)  Funky Buddha Brewery More Moro Blood Orange IPA These guys took the fabled and adored IPA and made it so much better. A moro is an American varietal of blood orange that has deep, crimson red flesh and a mellow citrus flavor. Their More Moro IPA piles on the “moro” for an overload of ripe, fresh blood orange flavor. Deeply citrusy and fruity, with a hop-forward nose, sticky malt body, and long grapefruit hop finish. Thank You, Funky Buddha.

3) Schofferhofer Grapefruit Hefeweizen This beer is just utterly superb, Schofferhofer grapefruit is a unique combination of sparkling wheat beer and refreshing tangy fruit juice. Mix of 50% Schofferhofer wheat beer and 50%  grapefruit juice. So damn good.

4) Cisco Brewers The Grey Lady This wheat beer is fermented with Belgian yeast and brewed with fresh fruit and spices. It is a unique ale that emits a complex, earthy nose and a soft, mid-palate maltiness with hints of tropical fruit. Dry and spicy, truly a great beer.

5) Terrapin Rye Pale Ale– Made with five varieties of hops and a generous amount of specialty malts, it offers a complex flavor and aroma that is both aggressive and well balanced – a rare find among beers that contains a great and unique taste.

6) Holy Mackerel Panic Attack-  So flavorful, A Belgian style ale with a subtle hint of spice clocking in at 10%. Eye popping flavor from a blend of Canadian malted barley, Goldings hops, and a unique flavorful Belgian yeast strain. Unfiltered, unpastuerized and with just a hint of spice this beer is meant to be savored slowly so as to enjoy the aroma as well as the taste. Vintage dated, excellent now but even finer with 2 years age.

7) Wild Blue Blueberry Lager-  Not quite a beer but soooo smooth and delicious. Wild Blue is brewed with a complex blend of two- and six-row barley malt, classic Aroma Hops from the Willamette Valley in the Pacific Northwest and German hops from the Hallertau region in Bavaria. It is blended with all-natural blueberry syrup made from real blueberries, giving the beer a balanced blueberry flavor and pleasant aroma.

8) Harpoon Brewery Pumpkin UFO-  We do love our pumpkins, beers, soup, coffee, ice cream….This beer is a blend of spices that really hits the palate. A malt combination provides a smooth body and slightly sweet flavor, which balances perfectly with the earthy notes derived from the pure pumpkin.

9) Old Chub Scottish Ale-  Brewed with loads of Scottish barley and malted grains and a tad of beech-wood smoked malt. Has a smokey flavor with hints of cocoa and coffee. Pretty damn good.

10) Ommegang Belgian Pale Ale– This libation is a smooth pale ale with notes of citrus and tropical fruit that is refreshing without blowing you away.

11) Inlet Brewing Co. Monk IPA-  More Belgian then Indian, this was a solid and smooth tasty concoction.

Grovetoberfest is always so much fun and we can not wait until The Sprung Spring Beer Festival in March.

See you there Beeroholics ;)

Celebrate the relaunch of HandsOn Miami by serving to support efforts to preserve and protect the natural areas that surround the historic Vizcaya Museum and Gardens. Volunteers will work in teams to identify and remove invasive exotic plants from the property’s grounds. Most of the work will take place under the cover of the natural hardwood hammock and mangrove and the weather should keep things nice and comfortable for a fun morning of volunteering in the outdoors!

An Evening of Art and Beauty at the Ritz-Carlton Coconut Grove

On Thursday, October 17, both hotel and local guests celebrated an evening of beauty, glamour and relaxation, enlivening all of the senses at the Ritz-Carlton Coconut Grove. Guests refreshed with spa teasers and learned beauty tips from the fresh additions to the new menu including: Carita Paris, Pino, Shankara, Moroccan Oil, NuFACE, Clarisonic, Eminence and makeup consultations by CHANEL, provided by Neiman Marcus Coral Gables. As the sun set over the Miami skyline, guests enjoyed libations by VeeV Vodka, vibrant performances and a live culinary action display presented by the hotel’s executive culinary team.

Vizcaya Halloween Sundowner at Vizcaya Museum and Gardens

The Vizcayans hosted their 27th annual Halloween Sundowner, the premier Halloween Party in Miami and highly anticipated annual fundraiser benefiting Vizcaya Museum and Gardens. Guests enjoyed complimentary liquor, wine and beer, canapés, dancing under the stars to a live band and a DJ, costumes watching and the thrill of Vizcaya after dark. There was also a costume contest judged by reps from Miami New Times, Yelp and Brickell Magazine, and awards for an array of categories.

Unlike any other South Florida Halloween party, the Halloween Sundowner’s unique location at Vizcaya serves as the perfect spot for a spooky soiree! In an unparalleled fashion, the property is entirely transformed into a veritable haunted house including Vizcaya’s enormous outdoor veranda overlooking Biscayne Bay where the naughty and nice inevitably mingle while enjoying tasty libations until late into the night.

A special thanks goes out to the sponsors that include Brickell/Key Biscayne Magazine, Absolut, Malibu Rum, Chivas Regal, Dos Equis XX, Thierry’s Catering and Car2Go. Guests arriving in a Car2Go were able to park in a Free Preferred Parking Zone, the closest parking spots to the party.

The Vizcayans mission is to assist the Museum and Miami-Dade County in addressing the complex and costly needs of Vizcaya through its advocacy. The Vizcayans plays an important role in preserving Vizcaya and making the Museum accessible to all. For more than fifty years, The Vizcayans have raised funds for Vizcaya Museum and Gardens through special events, membership and donor programs, bequests, and the Vizcaya Museum and Gardens Endowment Fund.

A Palatable Passage to India at the Ritz-Carlton Coconut Grove

Scrumptious Indian Fare Popping Up for a Month at The Ritz Coconut Grove

While Miami has cranked out some sterling places to eat the past few years, we have heard complaints that one must travel to the foreign land of Broward County to get legit Indian food. Well, we are happy to to report that for the next month you can save yourself the trip and head to  The Ritz-Carlton Coconut Grove, Miami for Executive Chef Ramesh Kaduru’s A Passage to India at the Ritz-Carlton Coconut Grove.  The profoundly warm and charismatic Chef Ramesh delighted our senses and palates with his complex dishes literally bursting with assorted flavors. Our favorite dishes were the Malai Kofta Curry, potato and cheese dumplings bathed in cashew fondue; the Mughali Chicken, savory Tandoori chicken in a butter masala; the naan, and these addictive dessert dumplings called Gulab Jamun dipped in rose scented syrup. We are drooling as we type and reminisce.

The ambiance and decor are beautiful with paisley, brightly colored fabrics adorning the venue, complete with live Indian musicians and a dancer. The pop-up restaurant will serve delicious Indian cuisine from Oct. 3 through Nov. 3, from 6  to 10 p.m, it is only open on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sundays. We strongly recommend you go and enjoy these delightful dishes before they are gone.

Locos Only – Free Beer Tasting #7 10/7/13

Locos Only – Free Beer Tasting #7
locosonlyMonday, Oct 7, 6:00pm until 8:00pm
The Grove Spot
3324 Virginia Street
Miami, Florida 33133

Loco is a word that although Spanish in origin, has entered the English lexicon and become part of popular culture. You would be hard pressed to find a person in the U.S. who did not fully understand the meaning of the word loco. It is used in everyday speech, in advertisements and even literature. It will soon join the ranks of other assimilated foreign word like lingerie, soufflé and kindergarten. And rightfully so. It’s words like loco which give our language a little diversity…

Ok. Sorry. We misunderstood the writing assignment. This invitation is for Locals Only, not Locos Only. Let’s start again.

Craft beer is an amazing world. One that is really driven by the local communities and local breweries. This locally-sourced movement is popular in beer and other culinary fields. We are sure you’ve seen your share of farm-to-table restaurants and ones who will only serve and use local ingredients. In a similar way, local craft beer is all about keeping things close. Although names like Sam Adams, Dogfish Head and Magic Hat are national players, it would have never been possible with the support of their local market and local fan base. It is important to support your local breweries. At this point we have three commercial breweries in Miami-Dade and Broward, Schnebly – Miami Brewing, Wynwood Brewing, and Funky Buddha. There are a few more in the building process like M.I.A. Brewing, Biscayne Bay Brewing, Gravity Brewlab and others too. We also have several brewpubs like the venerable Titanic Brewing, Gordon Biersch, The Abbey and Organic Brewing. We also have, what we like to call, breweries to be. These are groups producing high-quality and innovative beers as they plan their entrance into the marketplace. We have several like Forth Age, Opus Ales, Invasive Species and Midnight City who have really been called into action and providing local craft beer fans with neat and edgy brews. The bottom line is that although we do not have (at this point) a large number of commercial brewing, we do have a strong number of local brewers producing great beers. Come get a sneak peek at what they’ll be pouring at Grovetoberfest at our 7th and final tasting, Locals Only on Monday Oct 7 at The Grove Spot.
