10 years in the making: an epic celebration of mentorship through the arts. Join Guitars Over Guns on November 10th, 2018 for the 5th Annual Choose Your Sound Benefit Concert, 7:00 p.m. – 11:00 p.m. at the University of Miami Student Center.

Last year with the community’s support, Guitars Over Guns raised $165,000 to support our arts-based mentoring programs for Miami’s at-risk youth. With these funds, over 700 kids are being served at 14 sites through the Summer of 2018, bringing the total to over 2,500 youth served over the last 9 years. This year, our goal is to raise $300,000, allowing Guitars Over Guns to transform the futures of 500 additional students living in Miami-Dade County’s most disadvantaged communities.

This event celebrates Guitars Over Guns’ 10 years of of making music and changing lives. Our programs offer students from disadvantaged backgrounds a powerful combination of music education and mentorship with professional musicians to help them overcome hardship, find their voice and reach their potential as tomorrow’s leaders. Take a trip back in time to the days when Dusty Springfield, Johnny Mathis and Elvis ruled the airwaves, as “Midnight Radio” goes live once again for a summer edition of the popular concert series.
The free concert will be held Friday, Aug. 17 at 7 p.m. at the Coral Gables Adult Center in Coral Gables.
The concert is presented by Geraldo José Ortega, who created the “Midnight Radio” concert series” in order to present classic jazz versions of songs from different eras.
Selections will include “Stormy Weather,” “Misty,” “The Shadow of Your Smile,” “Orange Colored Sky,” “The Man That Got Away,” and much more.
The singers will be accompanied by the All Souls Jazz Quartet.
Ortega, who recently voiced the role of Tony in the Miami City Ballet’s production of “West Side Story Suite,” appeared this summer in the Miami Music Festival. He also voiced the role of Tony with the Miami City Ballet, and appeared this month with the Opus Opera in New Orleans.
Guest soloist will be Vanessa Gentzschein. She has sung with the Florida Grand Opera and the Lyric Opera of Chicago and has also appeared in the chorus of those operas, as well as in title roles on various stages, including in Italy.
In addition, singers who belong to Ortega’s “Rising Stars” program, and who appear regularly at the Coral Gables Adult Center, will also perform.
There is no charge for the concert, but donations to the Alzheimer’s Foundation are welcome.

Shops at Merrick Park, Coral Gables’ pristine destination for fine shopping and dining, will host National Night Out in partnership with Coral Gables Police and Fire on Tuesday, August 7 from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. This free community event will provide the opportunity for Coral Gables residents and business owners to get better acquainted with their local police and fire departments.

The Coral Gables community will meet, engage and interact with local police officers and fire department officials, learn crime prevention tips, promote neighborhood unity and foster community. The public will also get up close with various service vehicles.

In 1984, the National Association of Town Watch (NATW) launched an ambitious project. The leaders of the nonprofit crime prevention organization called on neighborhood watch associations, law enforcement agencies and other groups to help organize National Night Out. The City of Coral Gables joins this event to send a symbolic message to criminals that the public and the police are united and unintimidated.

This July, Giralda Plaza will be transformed into a vibrant and colorful art experience with the installation of the Umbrella Sky Project. Starting Friday, July 13th and continuing over the next two months, hundreds of umbrellas will gently sway over the newly transformed Giralda Plaza, the pedestrian promenade located at the 100 block of Giralda Avenue.

Coral Gables is the first city in South Florida and the third city in the U.S. to host the Umbrella Sky art project, an internationally recognized art display that has graced streets around the world, including Paris and Lisbon. Umbrella Sky in Coral Gables is made possible through a partnership between the City of Coral Gables, the Coral Gables Community Foundation and the Business Improvement District of Coral Gables

‘Hacking School Culture: Designing Compassionate Classrooms’ was written by Ellen Feig Gray, a Miami positive psychology practitioner, researcher, and parent coach, and Angela Stockman, a professional learning facilitator and educational consultant based in New York.

As colleagues and parents who have witnessed an atmosphere of heightened anxiety among students, teachers and parents across the country, Ellen and Angela came to the realization that, “bullying prevention and character building programs, while deepening our awareness of how today’s kids struggle and how we might help, are not enough to create school cultures where students and staff flourish.”

FLIPANY will host its annual “Chefs Up Front” fundraising dinners this August at The Biltmore in Coral Gables and the W Fort Lauderdale. This popular epicurean adventure showcases the talent of 10 of South Florida’s most acclaimed chefs who prepare a five-course signature dinner tableside for their guests. Each table’s menu is unique and complemented by sommelier-selected wines. One hundred percent of the proceeds benefit Share Our Strength’s Cooking Matters® program, which connects families with healthy food by teaching them how to prepare nutritious and delicious meals on a limited budget.

The evening is hosted by radio personalities Kimmy B. of Hits 97.3 and Julie Guy of 101.5 LITE FM, both of whom are long-time FLIPANY supporters. The addictive, inspiring art of musical theater – and some of its most beloved songs – will be featured in a benefit concert for Area Stage Company and Conservatory. In 5’6”, 7, 8 – Lamentations of Two Broadway Bound Showgirls, accomplished performers Rebecca Ashton and Carolina Ordoñez, backed by a group of budding young ASC artists, will perform new and classic Broadway hits, while relating the ups, downs and comic misadventures of performing, auditioning and teaching.
All proceeds from the April 7 concert will benefit ASC’s moving fund. Actors’ Playhouse has transformed its Mainstage theatre into a Dublin bar for this much-anticipated production. Featuring Miami’s only onstage bar, audience members are invited to join in a lively music session with the cast before the show while enjoying a drink onstage in our authentic Irish pub. Doors open 30 minutes prior to showtime.

All of the music in ONCE is played live on stage by an extraordinary cast of actor-musicians. Between them, the 12 actors play 30 instruments during each performance, including guitar, cajon, melodica, harmonica, piano, violin, castanets, bass guitar, ukulele, mandolin, banjo, tambourine, drums, acccordion and cello. The company’s production includes members from the original Broadway cast as well as several actors who have performed the show regionally.

From Nowhere tells the story of three high-school students who are struggling with the issues that trouble all teenagers, but, in addition, these three have another issue which causes them constant concern. They are illegal aliens. They know that at any time, should someone require documentation from them, they could end up deported back to countries they don’t know and have never spent any time in. These children are really “from nowhere.” Each one wants to get papers but has to navigate the American legal system to do so. The lawyer who wants to help them makes it clear that the easiest way to obtain legal documentation is to apply for political asylum by “coming up with” some form of threat or abuse that they or their parents are afraid of if they are forced to return to their homelands. The wrenching drama was the winner of the Narrative Spotlight Audience Award at this year’s SXSW Film Festival. The film also won the Audience Award and the jury-awarded Special Mention prize at the Champs-Elysees Film Festival.
The Living Together Film Series, a program of films spread across ten nights, will be screened on selected Thursdays from September 2017 to April 2018 at MDC’s Tower Theater and at The Bill Cosford Cinema at the University of Miami. Food trucks will offer a variety of lunch options, and free bike valet will be provided by Green Mobility Network. An event stage will host music, exercise classes and a variety of giveaways.

BikeSafe, will host a bike rodeo to teach kids how to ride their bikes safely and follow the rules of the road. Children can also enjoy complimentary bounce houses, arts and crafts, and other family-friendly activities.

Bike tours will be scheduled hourly, departing to points of interests and local landmarks nearby in Coral Gables neighborhoods. These tours are led by trained ride leaders on safe routes and guided by local experts.

Momentum Dance Company presents The Emperor and the Nightingale – A Tale from China. A benevolent, but sickly Chinese Emperor is healed by the magical song of a simple gray Nightingale. The Emperor and the members of the court are amazed, and want to keep the Nightingale in a golden cage. But when the Emperor of Japan sends a golden, jewel encrusted, mechanical bird, the Emperor and the members of the court forget about the Nightingale, and she flies away. Eventually, the glittering mechanical bird breaks, and the Emperor falls ill again, but the kind Nightingale comes back to save the Emperor, who agrees that she can be free.

The children will journey with Kim and Emma through the ocean, tumbling across waves to discover treasure with the help of new sea critter friends along the way. Guests will enjoy a puppet reading, short movie based on the book, and a meet-and-greet / Q&A session with the author.

Seaper Powers: In Search of Bleu Jay’s Treasure is a magical tale about a little girl, Emma, who discovers special seagrass off the island of St. Thomas. The magical grass gives her the power to talk to fish! Not only does she make new friends; she also sets off on a new adventure to find buried treasure!

Kim Cameron is a true believer in inspiring and nurturing kids. She is a vocal instructor/mentor with Guitars Over Guns and often takes her students to perform with her at local community events. While on tour in the Caribbean, she met a 12-year-old girl who had a fascination with octopi. This brief encounter inspired the creation of Mr. Octopus, a children’s tune featuring an 8-year-old whom Kim had signed to her record label. After completing the song, her co-writer and guitarist, John DePatie, encouraged her to take it to next level by writing a children’s book using the song as the basis of the story. They called the book Seaper Powers: In Search of Bleu Jay’s Treasure. Kim Cameron is also a 2-time Billboard Top 20 dance recording artist.

Actors’ Playhouse at the Miracle Theatre, together with presenting sponsor, The Children’s Trust, announce the return of the eighth annual Young Talent Big Dreams – the most widespread local FREE youth talent contest in Miami-Dade. Kids between the ages of 8-17 are invited to showcase their talents and compete for prizes ranging from performing arts scholarships, cash awards, performance opportunities plus tickets to local attractions and theatres. The Grand Prize winner will receive a free trip – airfare, hotel and free passes for two – to attend the live FOX Teen Choice Awards, courtesy of WSVN-TV, together with $500 in cash.

The talent competition will feature a total of six individual categories including; pop/rock/rap vocals, musical theatre/jazz standards/classical vocals, dance, musical instrument, original spoken word and original vocal and/or instrumental composition, and categories for groups of 6 or less members including; dance, musical instrumental and band/vocal group. Participation in the competition is free of charge and limited to residents of Miami-Dade County.

Participants may compete in one individual and one group category only, and those who pre-register will be given priority audition times. Each act will be allotted up to one minute during their preliminary audition performance and two minutes for the semifinal and final round performance. There will be a maximum of nine winners and one grand-prize winner chosen during the finals. Participation in Young Talent Big Dreams requires parental consent. Learn to capture the best of what’s in bloom at the Garden. This class will review the best camera settings to create different interpretative flower images in the garden. It will teach shallow focus and hyper focal techniques to create botanical art of the flora at Fairchild. Different lighting techniques to produce dramatic images will be used and there will be a review of the work of famous flower photographers, while exploring their different techniques. Time in the field will be used to learn how to manage the subject, use the correct approach and effectively compose the image. For this class students should be familiar with their camera’s basic exposure and focus controls as it will not cover basic camera operations. Sturdy tripods and cameras with interchangeable lenses or point-and-shoot cameras with close-up settings and user-adjustable settings are strongly recommended. A 90mm or longer macro lens is highly desirable. If you do not own a macro lens, you will need a good close-up lens (one that allows you to fill your frame with subjects four inches in length). Guitars Over Guns proudly hosts the 4th annual Choose Your Sound Benefit Concert presented by the Miami Marlins on November 11th, 2017 at the University of Miami’s Donna Shalala Student Center, 7pm – 11pm. This year’s Choose Your Sound is gearing up to be an epic evening of music and fun in the name of our community’s future young leaders. Get down to the sounds of the 60s R&B and soul, with musical favorites performed by an all-star band comprised of Guitars Over Guns mentors and alumni, including Andrew DeMuro from Team Adam of NBC’s The Voice, Season 11 and Guitars Over Guns’ regional director of Chicago.

Guests will enjoy delicious food from SuViche and Novecento with drinks from Russian Standard Vodka, Wynwood Brewery, Rosé Piscine and Southern Wine and Spirits. A robust silent auction featuring 5-star trips, experiences, art and more will also be a highlight of the evening.

Last year with the community’s support, Guitars Over Guns raised $102,000 for programs to empower young people through mentorship and music. Thanks to this support, 626 kids were served at 14 sites as of July 2017, bringing the total to over 2,000 youth served over the last 9 years. This year our goal is to raise $150,000 allowing us to transform the future for 500 additional students living in Miami-Dade County’s most disadvantaged communities.

This event celebrates the important role that Guitars Over Guns’ arts-based mentoring programs have in keeping Miami’s young people inspired, engaged, and prepared to be successful adults. Our unique style of mentorship through the arts opens the necessary doors to create the opportunity for student success —in and out of the classroom. These young people living in Miami’s underserved communities need positive alternatives to the dangerous influences that dominate their environments. Saturday, September 23rd join Kim Cameron and her puppet friend Emma at Books and Books for a reading from her ocean themed children’s book series Seaper Powers: In Search of Bleu Jay’s Treasure! Appropriate for ages 5-9, the Seaper Powers series communicates positive messages about self-confidence, friendship, and the environment. The children will journey with Kim and Emma through the ocean, tumbling across waves to discover treasure with the help of new sea critter friends made along the way. Guests will enjoy a puppet reading, short movie based on the book, and a meet and greet with Q&A afterwards.

In search of Bleu Jay’s Treasure: A magical tale about a little girl (Emma) who discovers special seagrass off the island of St. Thomas. It transforms her body so that she can talk to fish! Not only does she make new friends, she sets off on a new adventure to find buried treasure!

Kim Cameron is a true believer in inspiring and nurturing kids. She is a vocal instructor/mentor with Guitars Over Guns, performing with puppets. While on tour in the Caribbean, she met a 12-year-old who had a fascination with octopi. This brief encounter inspired the creation of Mr. Octopus, a children’s tune featuring an 8-year-old whom Kim recently signed to her record label. After completing the song, her co-writer and guitarist, John DePatie, encouraged her to take it to next level by writing a children’s book using the song as the impetus. They called the book Seaper Powers, in Search for Bleu Jay’s Treasure.

All began when the Italian blues singer, guitarist, and songwriter Frank Fois, at the age of 3, picked up the guitar. His passion for the music especially the Blues and Rock, led him to play and sing every day in search of his sound and his musical soul. Over the years, Frank developed a unique style, which is reminiscent of the great bluesmen like Eric Clapton, Peter Green, Mike Bloomfield and BB King. A fundamental part of his style is his voice with which manages to excite those who hear it.

During his music tour in 2013, Fois performed in Australia, the United States and in different European Countries: Germany, France, United Kingdom, Italy.

Frank lets the instrument do all the talking as he picks and bends with pinpoint accuracy. Frank’s vocals, in step with his electrifying ability on the axe, offer the complete package for this rising star, he truly puts his emotion into his music.

After moving to New York in 2014, he performed in the best clubs of Manhattan and Long Island as B.B. King Blues Club, Terra Blues, Metropolitan and many others by also jamming with various well know musicians.

During the last years, Frank played with his band “Frank Fois Band” in Europe and in the United States which includes New Jersey, California, Florida.

In his newest play, Carbonell Award-winning playwright Michael McKeever explores the history of the world’s most famous painting, including Leonardo da Vinci’s meeting of Senora del Giocondo (Mona Lisa) and his masterful creation of her indelible countenance. In this wryly inventive parable, a kingdom within a painting is divided into three castes: the impeccably colored Alldunns, the incomplete Halfies, and the barely outlined Sketchies who are treated as outcasts. Chastised for her forbidden love of the dashing Ramo, Claire runs away into the cursed forest. Ramo and his friends journey after her, crossing over the boundaries of the forest only to arrive at the very edge of the painting – where they tumble through the canvas and into the Painter’s studio.

Few films inspire the imagination as much as Steven Spielberg’s landmark adventure film Jurassic Park. When released in 1993, its CGI and animatronic dinosaurs were unlike anything the world had seen before. It was hard not to believe an actual island was created with these long-dead behemoths roaming the land. Based on Michael Crichton’s book of the same name, the film follows paleontologists Alan Grant (Sam Neill) and Ellie Sattler (Laura Dern) as they are invited by eccentric millionaire John Hammond (Richard Attenborough) to preview his new theme park located off an island in Costa Rica that is full of live dinosaurs. In May 1940, Germany advanced into France, trapping Allied troops on the beaches of Dunkirk. Under air and ground cover from British and French forces, troops were slowly and methodically evacuated from the beach using every serviceable naval and civilian vessel that could be found. At the end of this heroic mission, 330,000 French, British, Belgian and Dutch soldiers were safely evacuated. Christopher Nolan’s film of the Battle of Dunkirk is, hands down, the most eagerly anticipated film of the summer.

The epicurean event will present decadent five-course dinners prepared by 10 of South Florida’s most acclaimed chefs. One hundred percent of proceeds will benefit Share Our Strength’s Cooking Matters™ Program, which connects families with healthy food by teaching them how to prepare nutritious, tasty meals on a limited budget.

As part of Vizcaya’s evolution, it has embarked upon an ambitious plan to reunite both sides of the property and restore Vizcaya Village to become a community resource. These open houses will be one of the first times we are inviting the public into the Village and revealing these plans.

Now in its tenth year, Lip Service began as an intimate gathering of storytellers and story lovers and grew into a literary happening that regularly draws more than 500 people to its shows.
