Agustina Woodgate At Dimensions Variable Endlessly Falling at Spinello Gallery 11/14/09

EndlesslyFalling_CC
Spinello Gallery is proud to announce AGUSTINA WOODGATE’S, ENDLESSLY FALLING, hosted at DIMENSIONS VARIABLE (171 NE 38th Street, Miami, FL., 33137), located next to Spinello Gallery.

Endlessly Falling is the second installation in a new series of landscapes. The sceneries construct surreal exteriors in interior spaces, probing the relation between everyday objects and the grand narratives that condition our unnatural relationship to the natural world.

A hanging chandelier holds thousands of clear strands of water falling over the grounds. Beneath the only functional light fixture, something emerges and grows. In Endlessly Falling, we are home; we must be, except as usual, the home is strange. In fact, it is this homey that is strange, that comfort of home doesn’t quite settle. Because of this, incongruities become meaning-makers. Instead of order emerging from chaos, chaos emerges from the order. We follow the displacement line again and again, in an effort to make sense of the sensory, in an effort to recompose the many directions the story leads.

Through this new series of works, Agustina probes environments as interior escapes and exterior escapades. She is always unfolding a narrative process that also tells the larger story of her own oeuvre. She adventures another tale in our midst, as each new piece patterns the fictions we all share.

November 14, 2009 – January 2, 2010
Agustina Woodgate is an interdisciplinary artist who uses a wide range of media, including photography, installation, sculpture, video, and performance to create enchanted worlds. Her work investigates the encounter between childhood dreams and adult socialization, and how innocence, magic, and the fantastical configure our relationships to our objects, behaviors, selves, and stories. Fueled by an endless captivation with her own process, Agustina discovers how we naturally and unnaturally compose our rituals, memories, traditions, and narratives through the materials around us. Originally from from Buenos Aires, she now makes her home in Miami, FL, represented by Spinello Gallery.

Locust Projects presents Francesca DiMattio Decollage 11/14/09

DiMattio_Decollage
Francesca DiMattio
Decollage
Opening reception: November 14th, 7-10pm
Through December 30, 2009

Locust Projects is pleased to present Decollage, a solo exhibition by New York-based artist Francesca DiMattio. Decollage describes the process DiMattio uses — of cutting, tearing and peeling away images – to explore collage through large banners and a site-specific mural.

DiMattio is known for her large-scale paintings depicting spaces where architectural and modernist forms, sculptural figures, and art historical elements collide with one another. Using various painting techniques, the artist creates the illusion of collage in these works. For her exhibition at Locust Projects, DiMattio will create an installation that continues her exploration of the spaces where disparate elements meet — by employing actual collage for the first time.

In banners that measure up to ten feet in height, Xerox images are glued on top of one another, and then peeled away in parts to reveal new forms and relationships. The source materials come from DiMattio’s archive of magazines such as Home and Garden and National Geographic, found books, and reproductions of the artist’s paintings. Images are lacerated into strips and cut into quilt patterns, only to be re-adhered using weaving and scrap-booking techniques. Each artwork simultaneously illustrates the diametrical concepts of building and collapsing space. The pieces are further accentuated with acrylic and watercolor paint.

A site-specific mural will also be created at Locust Projects, drawing inspiration from the culture and scenery of the Miami area. This work is composed of clips of the sun, beach chairs, ocean, ships and construction cranes. Rather than present a coherent narrative, however, the images are fragmented, broken, and interrupted. Each element is given equal weight, radically altering traditional hierarchies of value and forming a powerful piece that vacillates between abstraction and figuration.

Francesca DiMattio (b. 1981) lives and works in New York. She has had solo exhibitions at Salon 94 in New York, and LAXART in Los Angeles. She is currently part of the group exhibition Abstract America: New Painting and Sculpture at The Saatchi Gallery in London and will present a solo show, ArtWall at ICA Boston in 2010. Dimattio’s work is in the permanent collection of the Miami Art Museum.

This exhibition is made possible with the support from: Andy Warhol Foundation; Galt & Skye Mikesell; Hannibal Cox Jr. Foundation; Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs, the Cultural Affairs Council, the Mayor, and the Miami-Dade County Board of County Commissioners. Special thanks to Salon 94, New York. Design: Venture Architects.

Littlest Sister 09 Invitational Art Fair 12/1-5/09

LSO9_MATTERAZZI_PR_CC
Spinello Gallery, (155 NE 38 ST, No. 101, Miami, Florida – 33137) is proud to present LITTLEST SISTER 09 / INVITATIONAL, playfully commenting on the proliferation of the “Art Fair” as the viewer ironically steps back into the gallery.

If you’re looking to find small diamonds in the rough, look no further. In its second edition, Art Basel Miami Beach finds her baby sibling at SPINELLO GALLERY. LITTLEST SISTER 09, the smallest art fair in town, is conveniently located in the Design District and is sandwiched between Design Miami, Art Miami, Photo Miami, Scope, and Red Dot. The FREE art fair consists of 8 booths, all 4′ x 8′ in size. The scaled down booths uniquely house 50 of todays most provocative artists with a predominant focus on local Miami artists, curated by Denis Tejedor (Assistant Curator of Bass Museum) and Art Fair Founder, Anthony Spinello.

LITTLEST SISTER 09 is a fragment of the explosive satellite art fair phenomena; exploring the “booth” as a venue to exhibit and sell art. Since 2002, every December the glamorous art typhoon – Art Basel Miami Beach, takes place in sunny Miami, Florida. The international art show takes place in Miami Beach. It is the American sister event of Art Basel in Switzerland, the most important annual art show worldwide for the past 39 years. 7 years later, the effects of Art Basel Miami Beach spawned 20+ “satellite” art fairs throughout Miami, housing 1100+ galleries and alternative spaces from around the world.

In the spirit of the miniature art fair, we invited the artists to submit works that are true to their individual style, however scaled down in size (approx. 9″ x 12″ and smaller). And like all art fairs, as works sell new works by the same artist will be re-hung.

OPENING RECEPTION: Saturday, October 10th, 7-10pm
Spinello Gallery (155 NE 38 St., No. 101, Miami Florida – 33137) is proud to present the much-anticipated solo exhibition by one of Miami’s original stars, Manny Prieres, “What We Do Is Secret.” The Cuban-American artist will feature a suite of haunting graphite and watercolor works on paper and sculpture . This will be Prieres’ debut exhibition with the gallery.
Prieres explains, “Every collision leaves a trace behind: debris, a trail of residue that marks the site where violence took place.” The work of Manny Prieres is that sort of remnant, the product of the clash between a traditional, temperamental heritage, and an intense, idiosyncratic counterculture. During the process of this convergence, a series of artifacts are created. They stand at the threshold of a new folklore: they are the iconography of a new tradition.
In this sense, Manny Prieres is an archaeologist, one that has painstakingly and lovingly preserved the objects of an unexplored civilization: their symbols, their gods, their rituals, and their lore. These artifacts bring up tales from the artist’s personal history, yet as a whole they create new narratives that, despite having hybrid elements from multiple sources of influence, are nevertheless moving towards an entirely different place.
Manny Prieres has been an active member of the Miami art scene for over ten years. From 1997-2004, Prieres ran one of Miami’s first influental alternative art spaces, BOX, alongside Jose Reyes and Leyden Rodriguez-Casanova. BOX played a crucial role in the development of the Miami art community.

Asylum SAVE Dade’s Halloween event 10/31/09

Eblast_3 101509
SAVE Dade dares you to enter the Asylum
Asylum SAVE Dade’s largest and most spectacular Halloween event in its history.

SAVE Dade’s most important fundraiser is re-imagined as Asylum for its 15th anniversary. “The concept was born out of the desire to incorporate the scary and eerie aspects that have become ubiquitous with Halloween, and the double meaning of the word “asylum” as a place of sanctuary,” explains CJ Ortuño, SAVE Dade’s executive director.

The high-octane event boasts a magnificent new location in the heart of Miami’s Design District at the 4141 Building. With 12,000 square feet and two levels of industrial designed space, 40-ft ceilings and glass elevator towers that bolt towards large skylights creating a stark and dramatic visual image, the 4141 Building promises to be the premiere Halloween space for partygoers this year.

Part zombie infested insane asylum part dance club, Asylum promises to be like no other Halloween event in Miami.
The party’s guests will be treated to state of the art light shows, macabre interactive performances, a costume contest, and the latest electronic/dance music spun by world class DJs. VIP guests will experience premiere treatment with access to an invitation only pre-event, complimentary valet parking, a VIP exclusive 2nd story dance floor, open bar, private “chill” lounge with catered gourmet food and separate DJ .

SAVE’s annual Halloween fundraiser began as an intimate house party in Belle Meade, in 1995. Since then, it’s grown year after year into an A-list event for South Florida’s LGBT community.

As SAVE Dade’s largest fundraising event of the year, all money raised at Asylum will fuel SAVE’s efforts in fighting for LGBT equality. Since 1993, SAVE has continued to protect lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender individuals from discrimination, and it has been thanks to the great collaboration of members, volunteers, donors and sponsors at such fundraising events like Asylum, that SAVE Dade’s momentum keeps going strong.

“We hope that Asylum will help us consolidate the reputation and recognition that our annual Halloween fundraiser has earned throughout these fifteen years as the best Halloween party in South Florida. In the future, instead of saying ‘I’m going to SAVE Dade’s Halloween party’, people will say ‘I’m going to Asylum’, concludes CJ Ortuño, “and everyone will know what that means and want to be there.”

Asylum is October 31st from 8 p.m. to 2am at 4141 NE 2nd Ave, Miami, FL

Tickets are now on sale at $35 general admission and $90 VIP through October 30th. Prices at the door will be $45 for general and $100 VIP. Free preferred valet parking for VIPs is only available if VIP tickets are bought on or before October 30th and also only available with a two ticket purchase. To purchase tickets, visit 103109.com, savedade.org or call (305)751-7283. For more information you can e-mail questions to asylum@savedade.org.

Locust Projects Smash and Grab Fundraiser 11/6/09

LocustProjects_SaveTheDate2009
The Smash and Grab is always an effervescent night at Locust Projects and our most important source of revenue for the year. The proceeds provide important funding for exhibition programming, lectures, and special projects. I hope you will consider supporting the event this year.
How it works:
There is no other fundraiser quite like this one. By purchasing a ticket to the event, each attendee is entered in a raffle. Over one hundred emerging and established artists will donate artwork for the raffle — enough so that each attendee is guaranteed to win an artwork. Tickets are drawn at random during the party, with the winner getting their choice of artwork (i.e, first called gets first pick, and so on). The result is fun way to place artwork into a collection, connect with Miami’s art community, and support Locust Projects.
Please find a list of donating artists below. We have great work this year and will preview the artworks for Locust Projects members on October 29th.

Wolfgang Roth & Partners Fine Art presents Women In Photography Opening Reception 9/25/09

WOLFGANG ROTH & PARTNERS FINE ART Presents
WOMEN IN PHOTOGRAPHY
HELMUT NEWTON BERT STERN NOBUYOSHI ARAKI DAVID LACHAPELLE
SEPTEMBER 26 – NOVEMBER 14, 2009
OPENING RECEPTION FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 25, 2009 / 7-10PM
Wolfgang Roth & Partners Fine Art is pleased to present a Fine Art Photography exhibition that takes a look at the portrayal of women in the twentieth century through the eyes of four masters of the medium- Helmut Newton, Bert Stern, Nobuyoshi Araki, and David LaChapelle.
Helmut Newton cemented his reputation as an undisputed master of Fashion Photography with his documentation of the collections of Yves Saint Laurent in the1970’s. Since then the power and appeal of his images have enabled later photographers such as Steven Meisel, David LaChapelle, Michel Comte and Mario Testino to make the transition from Fashion Photography to Fine Art. On view are over 100 works both in color and characteristic black and white.
The exhibition’s centerpiece is comprised of Bert Stern’s “The Last Sitting” (1962), a strong collection of portraits featuring Marilyn Monroe. Considered Stern’s best-known work, these images were shot for Vogue just three months before the actress’ death. These works convey not only her iconic beauty but also a palpable sense of sadness. Nineteen transparencies from this series disappeared and were recently found. Aptly dubbed “The Lost Sitting,” these works have remained both unpublished and unavailable to the public until now. One of the most ironic and riveting photographs of this series portrays Monroe in a brunette wig posing as Jackie Kennedy.
Also featured is the erotic, at times at times controversial work of Nobuyoshi Araki. Araki’s photographs have earned the artist a respected place in both eastern and western cultures. This has earned him a variety of high profile commissions from artists such as Bjork, for whom he photographed the cover and inner sleeve pages of her 1997 remix album, Telegram. In addition to having published over 350 books, Araki is considered one of the most prolific artists ever. His works are held in numerous museum collections including the Tate and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.
Finally, the exhibition is completed with the work of David LaChapelle, featuring the work “Amanda as Liz”. This piece references many of the cultural icons and art influences of the 1960s pop art movement. LaChapelle recreates unique works with his own brand of creative techni-color flair.

Locust Projects is pleased to announce the opening of the 2008 Hilger Artist Project Award Exhibition, the TM Sisters’ WHIRL CRASH GO!
On July 15th, the Miami-based collaborative will begin their 6-week transformation of Locust Projects’ space for a site-specific performance and exhibition on Saturday, August 29th and October 10th.

In their most ambitious performance to date, the TM Sisters will present a novel production including their personal athletic skills in synchronized swimming and roller skating. There will be moments of clashing and combination of cultures, animated video projections, and vivid Miami spirit. They are collaborating with audio composer Otto Von Schirach, designer Karelle Levy of Krelwear, and a supporting crew of performers. The TM Sisters’ epic piece will culminate into a kaleidoscope event of light, sound, and action.

Monica Lopez De Victoria, 28, and Tasha Lopez De Victoria, 26, grew up in Miami and collaborate under the name TM Sisters. They work in the media of video, digital video performance, VJing, collage, social experiments, zines, clothing, installations, and interactive video created along with their brother Samuel. Their do-it-yourself ethic began with their being home-schooled together by their parents. Their upbringing included frequent discussions regarding spirituality, psychology, behavior, relationships, creativity, and truth. The sisters’ work has been included in the international exhibitions “Uncertain States of America: American Art in the 3rd Millennium,” curated by Hans Ulrich Obrist, Daniel Birnbaum, and Gunnar B. Kvaran; the Second Moscow Biennial of Contemporary Art; and “PERFORMA 07.” Recent exhibitions include “(((sparks))),” Hedreen Gallery at Seattle University, Seattle, WA and “IDEALTONIGHT,” Hollywood Art and Culture Center, Hollywood, FL.

This is the second year that Austrian-based dealer and private collector Prof. Ernst Hilger has teamed up with Locust Projects to support emerging artists. The TM Sisters were selected to receive a $2,000 cash prize and the opportunity to create a seminal work within the Locust Projects’ space.

This exhibition is made possible with the support from: Andy Warhol Foundation; Galt & Skye Mikesell; Hannibal Cox Jr. Foundation; Miami-Dade County Tourist Development Council, the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs, the Cultural Affairs Council, the Miami-Dade County Mayor and Board of County Commissioners; State of Florida Division of Cultural Affairs; and Foundation for Contemporary Arts. Special thanks to Ernst Hilger; Karelle Levy of Krelwear and Otto Von Schirach. Photo: Justin Broadbent. Design: Venture Architects.

Locust Projects hours are Wednesday through Saturday from noon – 5:00 p.m.

This exhibition will remain on view for the Wynwood and Design District Art Walk on September 12th and October 10th, 7-10pm.

WHIRL CRASH GO! will be performed again October 10, 2009 at 8pm

Icons of our times
– feminine figures as a metaphor for human dignity

Ekaterina Moré’s paintings are not illustrations or portraits in the conventional sense but much rather symbolic images which evolved from deep emotions. With her impressive depictions, the artist shows her great respect for the feminine force. It was not by chance that deities in the dim and distant past were feminine. And in our times as well, the woman embodies many characteristics which the artist harmonizes in her works in an ideal manner. The dawning century will be feminine – or it will not come to be. The isolated male side, the cold striving for power and the brutal force often connected with the patriarchy have reached their limits. A new age begins.
Positive accents in this direction are set by the artist’s figure of the woman – erotic, sensitive, yet powerful and self-assured.

In 1976, Ekaterina Moré was born in then Leningrad which, in the early 1990s, was given back its original name of Saint Petersburg. Today, the artist is living in Germany’s Rhineland. Early on, her parents specially fostered her artistic talent since her family had always held the fine arts in high esteem. Her great-grandfather had already studied at the Baron Stieglitz Academy for Design which was closed during the Russian Revolution. Her grandfather attended the Art Academy in St. Petersburg. Her father worked as a sculptor to counterbalance his military career as an officer; and together with her mother who was an independent artist, he designed stage settings for the local theater.

Such early contacts with the fine arts aroused Ekaterina Moré’s interest in painting and drawing in a very particular way. Already at a youthful age, she showed professional promises. And so, in her early works she developed an impressive synthesis between traditional Russian painting and avant-garde art. Although she never received any academic fine arts education, she soon found her very individual expression as a painter and successfully became accepted as an artist in the West.

Among Russian artists, she was no exception with her great interest in western art. In former times, looking to the West used to be characteristic for Russian avant-garde artists and has also been amply documented in the abundant art collections – especially in Ekaterina Moré’s hometown of Saint Petersburg. She had become familiar with western European painting during her numerous visits to the Hermitage. Her first artistic examples were Postimpressionist painters such as Gauguin, Cézanne and van Gogh. Later also Tamara de Lempicka, the famous Polish painter who had lived in Paris for many years; from there she had gone to the U.S.A. and still later moved to Mexico. Tamara de Lempicka and Ekaterina Moré have a few things in common. To be mentioned in this respect is the artistic development of the two women as it evolved in showing more and more one central figure – self-assured, yet erotically feminine. Also to be mentioned as a common ground: Until the October Revolution, Tamara de Lempicka had spent some happy years in Saint Petersburg, Ekaterina Moré’s native town.

Due to her parents’ professions, Ekaterina also came to know the vastness of the Russian landscape and the differences of its regions. She grew up at the Russian-American outer border – on the Kamchatka peninsula and the Sea of Japan. Her visual experiences there broadened her artistic horizon in a very special way. In her memoirs about that time, Ekaterina Moré provides a very impressive description of the Kamchatka peninsula. The world of the resident Chuktchi people and the Koryaks with their colorful costumes, shamanistic traditions and their special ritual dances has left lasting impressions.
This deserted region in the extreme north-eastern part of Russia certainly is the complete opposite of the world of salons and tête à têtes which Ekaterina Moré paints today. But perhaps her sensitivity to special light and color effects stems from the experience with colors in that region: It remains dark all winter, and in the extremely short summer time, the bursting force of colors has a very intensive effect on the senses.
Just as this intensive Nordic light sharpened Ekaterina’s perceptions, the desolation and the vastness of this sub-arctic region possibly made her deal intensively with her inner images. She discovered art as the universal language of humanity which connects the different cultures and gives people the opportunity to meet their inner child.

In the far east of Russia, she had thus developed good basic prerequisites so that, in Germany, she could further continue her artistic ways.
After her move to Germany, she began to paint large-format pictures which soon attracted the interest of collectors and gallery owners. Already in 2001, the artist had her first successful exhibitions. Soon thereafter, her paintings were on display not only in Düsseldorf and in other German cities, but also in Moscow, Oslo and in Paris. Product designers saw the potential and the impressive power of her figures; and they transferred Ekaterina’s themes to high-quality luxury products – for example, company Rosenthal used them on its valuable porcelain tableware. Interior designers also took note of the artist’s attractive and exciting themes. They used them to good effect at very special places. Where would such salon scenes be more fitting than in actual salons, such as the bar of the Maritim Hotel in Berlin?

Ekaterina Moré’s feminine figures have an inner beauty – this is what makes them soulful and alive. They radiate self-assurance and integrity – characteristics pleasantly touching the viewer.
The attributes of the persons bring the type of depiction close to pictures of saints. As with Russian icons, a sort of symbolic picture is created which is here embedded not in a religious but rather in a worldly and mundane context.
It is particularly important for Ekaterina Moré to make a personality’s complexity come together in an organic unity. This unity consists of the interplay of apparently contradictory impressions. It not only concerns cold rationality and warmhearted emotions. In her depiction of the complexity of human life, Ekaterina Moré goes far beyond this and exposes nuances deep down. Ekaterina’s female figures give the impression of being proud and self-assured, yet at the same time compassionate and motherly. They appear open and unapproachable at the same time; sisterly intimate, yet oddly strange and unrelated. The artist develops from all these facets the ideal image of the woman which we can meet on the same level as masterly icons which are also ideal images uniting antagonistic personality traits – seemingly good ones as well as allegedly bad ones.

The technique of painting such pictures cannot be classically realistic. The artist much rather forms an artificial world entirely different from the real world –- a theatrum mundi in a pure form for the viewer’s enjoyment. She keeps her figures in a kind of limbo between elegant exterior appearance and introverted nature. This tension between the inner and outer world in her paintings provides a very distinctive atmosphere and nimbus. The scenes’ vague and indeterminate complexity additionally provides a particularly suspenseful feeling. Especially the artist’s double portraits are masterly in this respect.
The protagonists are here on the same level: Similar elegance and personal aura – and their particular nuances being expressed with utmost sensitivity. It shows the artist’s broad range of the palette to expose even the smallest nuances of a personality. A slight, almost invisible intimate touch underlines the closeness between the two protagonists. The viewer’s fantasy thus gets going by an irresistible force. Who would not yearn for such unfathomable intimacy and closeness?

Because Ekaterina Moré pays her respect to the female figures in her works with an inherently harmonizing complexity, they are provided with an exceptional personal strength which at times causes a feeling of unease in the viewer. They seem far removed from everyday life and on the world just for themselves. They are thus literally autonomous and combine knowledge and dignity. The costume, the jewelry and even the surroundings of the pertinent central figure – these attributes of femininity – absorb the aura of the central figures and provide the color supplement to the shapely feminine bodies which are the center of the artistic composition.
Not unlike Renaissance paintings, Ekaterina Moré is not only concerned with the effect of the colors’ luminescence but also with the materiality which she brings to great effect with a brilliance of colors. With her excellent skills of the craft, the artist presents us the meeting of minds with her artistic examples which at first seems rather remote due to the risqué nature of her compositions. Are her depictions the pictures of saints of our times – very modern, mundane successors of classical iconic figures?
Similar to the Renaissance paintings which are also charged with subtle eroticism, Ekaterina Moré’s works certainly also allow such assumptions.
Art Historian Dr. Helmut Orpel

“I want to depict fascinating women and in so doing provide substance to a yearning for beauty and harmony. My works want to open a way to the viewer’s inner self so that people will treat themselves with love and warmth.”
Ekaterina Moré

HYPERCULTURE – an installation by Victor Muñiz
Hyperculture refers to the staggering rate of change in modern technological societies. It is the condition of perpetual interregnum. In other words hyperculture is our constant state of being in between while information continues to flow with increasing volume. The rampant illnesses of our society–including the disintegration of the family, the degradation of the environment, unlimited commercialism, and unrelenting stress are familiar to us all.
Victor Muñiz examines the profundity of Hyperculture according to the Gaian hypothesis that the earth is a self-regulating organism. Can the same be said of information? Does it lead a life of its own or is it merely a disposable by-product of mass culture?
In the age of information Muñiz is a terabit of talent.

SPINELLO GALLERY / DESIGN DISTRICT: 155 NE 38 ST, No. 101, Miami, FL – 33137
SOLO EXHIBITION: Manny Prieres / “What We Do Is Secret.”
OPENING RECEPTION: Saturday, August 29th, 7-10pm
Exhibition through September 26th, 2009.
SPINELLO GALLERY prides itself in exhibiting intelligent works of art in every medium by contemporary local Miami emerging artists. SPINELLO GALLERY has become the playground for unorthodox and experimental artists who don’t easily fit into the confines of the traditional gallery space. SPINELLO GALLERY is steadily making headway in the Miami Art Scene and beyond becoming a contender in the Art World.

Locust Projects presents the TM Sisters Whirl Crash Go 8/29/09

TM Sisters WHIRL CRASH GO!

TM SISTERS WHIRL CRASH GO!
July 15 – October 17, 2009
Debut performance: August 29, 2009 at 8pm
*Save the date. Seating is limited.

Locust Projects is pleased to announce the opening of the 2008 Hilger Artist Project Award Exhibition, the TM Sisters’ WHIRL CRASH GO!
On July 15th, the Miami-based collaborative will begin their 6-week transformation of Locust Projects’ space for a site-specific performance and exhibition debuting on Saturday, August 29th. Visitors are welcome to observe their progress over the summer.

Foundation; Miami-Dade County Tourist Development Council, the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs, the Cultural Affairs Council, the Miami-Dade County Mayor and Board of County Commissioners; State of Florida Division of Cultural Affairs. Special thanks to Ernst Hilger; Karelle Levy of Krelwear; Otto Von Schirach; and Justin Broadbent.

Locust Projects hours are Wednesday through Saturday from noon – 5:00 p.m. Beginning July 15th, visitors are welcome to observe the artists’ progress over the summer.

This exhibition will remain on view for the Wynwood and Design District Art Walk on September 12th and October 10th, 7-10pm.

WHIRL CRASH GO! will be performed again October 10, 2009 at 8pm

Locust Projects is an alternative, not-for-profit, Miami-based exhibition space dedicated to providing contemporary visual artists the freedom to experiment with new ideas and methods without the pressures of gallery sales or other limitations of conventional exhibition spaces. Joseph O’Neals first Solo exhibition in Miami is not about a specific theme or incident but rather a feeling of nostalgic just out of reach memories. O’Neals work is viewed with the eyes but understood with the nervous system. He has a unique way of drumming up transcendental dialogue and emotions through an archaic system of symbols and imagery.

Part of the bluetan collective consisting of Geoff Henshall, Brandon Fonville, and Steve Chellis (all of which will have a few pieces on view) and drawing inspiration through his past in North Carolina as well as the bustling energy of is current home in New York City. According to O’Neal “It’s the space between the viewer and the piece I’m after, the resolution to the conflict between the two.”

Renowned artist Jim Pollock, legendary for creating the visual imagery for the cult status band Phish, comes to 101/exhibit to reveal for the frst time a complete retrospective on his two-decade plus career.

Jim Pollock: A Phantasy Pheast will not only lead his fans through a chronological history of Pollock’s life as an artist, but it will also reveal his process. Pollock will be flmed and broadcast live in streaming video via www.101exhibit.com printing a limited edition run of a print designed specifcally for this show.

Famous for his vibrant linoleum prints, show posters, and album artwork, Pollock got his start almost accidentally. As told by Pollock to Paul Grushkin and Dennis King, authors of the recently published book Art of Modern Rock “My wife was teaching a class, ‘Methods of Teaching Art,’ for her education degree, and she had to do a linoleum print. I thought it looked fun, and so I picked up an extra block to cut, and I really have not stopped since.”

By 1999, Jim was carving 12” x 24” blocks and printing with an ancient iron crankwheel bookbinding hand press. To print a poster this large Jim was required to crank the pressure plate down four times. Multiply that by the number in a run (sometimes up to 600) and then by the number of colors (one plate per color) and you end up with quite a labor-intensive process.

The artist’s more recent work has been very personal, dealing with environmental and social-political themes. He prefers to print on hemp paper and is committed to the re-legalization of hemp as a valuable farm commodity. He has also begun to print larger images using a Heidelberg letterpress machine.

Pollock is diligently creating brand new commissions for several leading Jam Bands, including Phish. And however inevitable the musical association, there is a lot more to Pollock than band posters. Having a low-key passion for activism, the printer has artfully endorsed environmental and social issues from Hemp paper to solar power to a most ironic commentary on the country’s oil consumption. By addressing such affairs, the artist has further continued exploring his craft while reaching new and larger audiences.

The largest and most extensive exhibition of Jim Pollock’s artwork ever on display in one location, “A Phantasy Pheast” is not only a detailed tour through the artist’s unique imagery, but the perfect chance to see for the frst time the most private and unique works and meet Jim. For more of Jim Pollock and his work, or to purchase prints, please contact or visit us online at www.101exhibit.com. This exhibition will be on display at 101/Exhibit from the 25thof June through the 18th of July.

HOUSE WARMING RECEPTION: Saturday, May 2nd, 7-10pm

Home Sweet Home. The nomadic SPINELLO GALLERY has officially found a new home in the beautiful Design District (155 NE 38th Street, No. 101, Miami FL- 33137). In what appears to be a pivotal shift within the Miami art scene, SPINELLO GALLERY will be the new kid on the block along side the newly relocated Locust Projects. In honor of the new 1600 sq ft. home, SPINELLO GALLERY is proud to present a house warming reception, “SPINELLO 101 – How to Make a Gallery a Home,” on Saturday, May 2nd, 7 – 10pm, featuring a group show of several Miami family members and friends: Sandra Bermudez, Blackbooks, Lee Materazzi, Christina Pettersson Santiago Rubino, Tatiana Vahan, TYPOE, and Agustina Woodgate.

RSVP to Ema Kaiser at ema.k@gmx.at

Born May 10th, 1965 in Germany, Reitz lived between the US and Germany throughout her childhood and took a keen interested in art due to the constant exposure of moving around due to her father’s career. After being refused entry to art school, Reitz switched career pursuits to communication and took up an advertising job with Saatchi & Saatchi, but still yearned to make art.

After the birth of her first daughter, Reitz quit her job and began painting. Working tenaciously she produced a large amount of paintings and was quickly noticed; her first exhibition sold out after two days.

Over the last 10 years, Reitz has participated in over 40 exhibitions including a solo exhibition at Dresdner Bank at Pariser Platz, Berlin, for the re-opening of Brandenburg Gate hosted by Bill Clinton and German Chancellor Schröder in 2002.

Her move to Berlin in 1993 and living with the everyday effects of Berlin’s political history had a significant political influence on Reitz. This is evident in much of her paintings which often comment on the ‘heavy hand of politics’ and civil injustices. Appropriating current events such as a Turkish girl who was shot in the middle of Berlin by her own brother for not abiding by the Muslim practices of her family and girls trying to live up to the misleading glamorous lifestyle of the rich and famous, Reitz’s work hones in on Global issues that affect our day-to-day lives.

Culture Kings Artist Collective Opening Reception 4/11/09

In 2006 CULTURE KINGS opened its doors in Miami’s Design District as Miami’s premier street/lifestyle boutique. Since its inception CULTURE KINGS has grown from being just a retail space into a cultural hub for Miami’s creative community. On Saturday, April 11th, CULTURE KINGS is launching its newest project the CULTURE KINGS ARTIST COLLECTIVE.
The CULTURE KINGS ARTIST COLLECTIVE was created to help start a change in the seasonal artistic atmosphere that currently exists in Miami by covering contrastive works and introducing the art scene to a new audience at the same time harnessing the energy of the creative community. The artists involved in the collective have both locally and internationally award winning works that are as diverse in subject matter as their cultural backgrounds.
On Saturday, April 11th, CULTURE KINGS ARTIST COLLECTIVE will be opening its doors to the public for its opening reception. The artist currently involved in the Collective consists of Johnny Robles, James and Karla Murray, AS1, CROME, Tatiana Suarez, 131 Projects, Michael D. Walsh, and Jose Mertz. Along with pieces by the collective artist, CKAC will also being introducing an upcoming project entitled “HOME” (Helping Our Mother Earth).
Please join us for the opening of CULTURE KINGS ARTIST COLLECTIVE Saturday, April 11th from 7-10pm. Complimentary drinks and hors d’oeuvres will be served from 7-9pm.

A Few Words From CK Founder Chris Oh
For a city that hosts one of the world’s largest art fairs, we are constantly overlooked in today’s modern art world. I feel the artistic energy in Miami is very seasonal and I created the CULTURE KINGS ARTIST COLLECTIVE to try and keep the energy in Miami constant. I found that many artists in Miami hit a ceiling that was only breakable by relocating to another major city, most often New York or Paris. I have no disillusions of turning Miami into the epicenter of the art world. Instead, I want to hopefully start a change that may lead to an awaking in the artistic community that will shift the art world’s perspective on Miami.
In addition to sparking the change in the artistic community I also wanted to introduce a new audience to the fine art world. I found that many people were intimidated to take an interest in Art because they were either unaware or misinformed of the gallery circuit and feared they might not understand a particular artistic concept. The CKAC space holds regular business hours and we invite anyone who cares or wants to take an interest in art to come by and hopefully leave a little more cultured.

Exhibit Opening Artformz Alternative 1/10/09

“Creatures!”

creatures

For The First Exhibition Of The New Year, Artformz Brings Together An Eloquent Collection of Art Work

Opening Reception: January 10, 2009 7-10 pm

Natasha Duwin, Ray Paul & Natalia Reparaz
exhibit their latest work presenting ideas and personal viewpoints on critters, creatures,
amoeba and the mystery of life that surrounds us everyday in our dreams, under our
skin, or along the forest path.

Natasha Duwin – Multimedia Installations in the Project Room.
Duwin’s earthy and ethereal “nest objects” have come to life in her installation “The Rest is Silence”. The title refers to the last line of the Shakespearean play “Hamlet”. In the artist’s words, “The idea is that my nests have come to life, they have abandoned the walls and hang, mid-flight, as spiders do, at different heights.” Duwin has transformed the Artformz project room into an environment that is pristine and white. With-in one hears faint, insect-like sounds – a primeval ecosystem that is also an antiseptic place, one that is populated by these strange objects that have an internal light projecting strange shadows. The installation is a play of contrasts, between the detached environment and the warmth of the critters, between the thorns of the twigs and the softness of the feathers, and between the separation of every “critter” from each other and the reaching out of their branches, and then the wholeness of the installation itself.

Ray Paul – Expanded painting – acrylic and enamel on canvas, wood and suspended surfboard.
Paul’s abstract, action paintings echo the surfer’s world. Rock music plays in the background, while the quite of an under water world of currents and eddies, teaming with any sort of microscopic organisms floats on the surface. The artist began as a biologist and his vision of the world is at once vast as ocean waves, and then again, as finely tuned as the view through a microscope. He states, “I believe the creative process must be preceded by some primordial urge, some instinctive need. This is followed by the desire to reach a state of child-like innocence, and thus the condition of the primal shaman. In this uninhibited emotional realm, the seed of a work of art is created. This seed is fertilized by the subconscious and brought to the embryonic level. Here, the conscious, which consists of intellect, reason, experience and the decision making process, attains control, nurturing and developing the embryo into maturation. The result of this process is a work of art.” Paul takes the accidental flow or splash of paint and then out of the chaos of this creation appear shapes and organisms over which he brushes intricate level after level of rainbow-effect layers. His painting surfaces come alive with all sorts of what appear as swimming/floating life forms, existing in a hyper colored universe.

Natalia Reparaz – Large-scale mixed media paintings.
Reparaz presents a monumental, two-dimensional piece depicting a giant squid that converges with the human race in surreal and extraordinary ways. In Reparaz’s work one sometimes see the possible influence of the work of Remedios Varo. Reparaz uses the female figure, or better stated, “woman” as a historical symbol, placed in the status quo of society’s positioning, and portrayed often as a central object in commune with, or struggling with, the order of power and sexual identity in the world surrounding her. Her figures, erotic and symbols of the threatening “femme fatale” are paired with all sorts of odd creatures: squid, lizards, crabs, the male species, even electronics, all leading the viewer into the artist’s realm of mystery and dreams, full of desire and forbidden places.

The exhibit runs from Jan. 10, 2009 – Feb. 2, 2009

Encaustic Artist Jeff League Global Vibrations at Miami Art Group Gallery Opening 1/10/09

Encaustic Artist Jeff League to present
‘Global Vibrations’ at Miami Art Group Gallery
Opening Saturday, January 10th from 8 pm to 10 pm

Florida Artist Jeff League holds awards from the Hasselblad Institute in Austria and recently had a work accepted into the permanent collection of the Museum of Florida Art.
Speaking of his exhibit, set to open on January 10th at the Miami Art Group Gallery, League says, “‘Global’ suggests maps and ‘Vibrations’ suggests the expanding world consciousness concerning the need for a green environment, sustainable energy, personal health and spiritual growth.” League works in mixed-media, but his fascinating surfaces are encaustic, one of the oldest forms of painting. Used by the ancient Greeks to decorate statuary and warships, and by the Egyptians to paint funeral portraits, encaustic is bee’s wax and resin, with or without pigment.
“Jeff League draws inspiration from archetypal imagery, and his work speaks to the complex relationship we have with nature and our role as caretakers of the environment,” says Gallery Director Dustin Benge. “I’ve admired Jeff’s work for years, and it is with great pleasure that we exhibit his work as it is receiving this increased recognition by museums and collectors.”
Jennifer Coolidge, Executive Director of the Museum of Florida Art says, “We are proud to welcome work by Jeff League to our permanent collection. League has exhibited through our Museum, and we are so pleased with the attention his work is getting by the collecting community. The mission of the Museum of Florida Art is to promote and showcase Florida Art and to make such resources available for the public.”
In addition, several of Mr. League’s works were recently acquired by the Polaroid Collection in Waltham, Massachusetts.
League lives and has a studio in Winter Park, Florida. “Some cultures,” he says, “are more attuned to the concept of environmentalism. I’m not a model citizen by far, but it’s in the forefront of my mind. This is why I do these pieces. The maps are old (League often incorporates maps into his works) suggesting that they are from a time before the industrial revolution… before we exploited land and resources.”
The exhibit will run from Saturday, January 10 to February 1, 2009.

Kick Off Art Basel with Italy’s Finest Female/Male Fashion Retailer, MARNI with a Grand Opening 12/2/08

Kick Off Art Basel with Italy’s Finest Female/Male Fashion Retailer, MARNI with a Grand Opening on Dec. 2nd from 5PM – 8PM

We wish to invite you to the MARNI boutique opening on Tuesday, December 2nd.
It is conveniently located across from the InFashion Art Expo. We hope to see you there!

Marni is pleased to announce the opening of its first flagship store in Miami. The boutique, situated in 3930 NE 2nd Avenue, Suite 100, captures the mood of Miami’s Design District taking inspiration from the streamlined, rhythmic patterns of the Art Deco style for which the city is famous.

Simple glazing of about 25 meters forms two of the boutique’s exterior walls making the façade appear wide open, capitalizing on the bright, sunny climate and giving the space an airy lightness.

For the design concept of the 230 square meter store, Consuelo Castiglioni and the architects from Sybarite played with circular forms, repeating them throughout the boutique. Graduated patterns of semi-spheres in white timberland and “haute relief as decoration on the wall echoes the texture of local Art Deco buildings and becomes the signature element of the Miami boutique. Clusters of varying sized backlit fiberglass boxes, painted in a random spray from translucent white to natural tones, are set in the walls accommodating bags, jewelry and sunglasses.

Round tiered shoe displays in stainless steel are scattered around the space along with round leather stools, modular seating and beige colored circular rugs, breaking up the expanse of polished concrete floor.

Appearing to float on minimal supports a stainless steel rail undulates around the perimeter, inside of which stainless steel trees fan out. Mannequins sprayed from white to natural tones, hang from the ceiling, accentuating the sense of weightless suspension in space. A special area in the anti-fitting room is dedicated to the lingerie collection, which is presented in upholstered leather boxes.

This intriguing setting contributes to the heritage of Miami’s Design District and provides an unexpected and captivating way of presenting Marni ready to wear and accessories collections.

LAURE DE MAZIERES
Design District
3817 NE 2nd. Ave
Miami, Fl 33137

A winning mixture of Italian contemporary art, a group exhibition organized and arranged by the art gallery, Fabbrica Eos, Milan, and Italian design interpreted by Visionnaire by Ipe Cavalli, Bologna, in the international context of the Art Basel week and De Mazieres space. Thirty works of painting, sculpture and photography will be exhibited in the show room: Fabio Giampietro’s canvases, who uses spiky objects to remove oil colours and create dizzy views of grey metropolitan cities which make your skin tingle; Manuel Felisi, who also depicts the city by his photographed glimpses of cities, avenues and monuments with painting and decoration; and José D’Apice, his works lead us beyond the reality, through visions arising out of the slow and intense activity of pencil on paper and parchment.

Paolo Troilo’s autobiographic paintings show elegant and silent outbursts of anger through finger painting on canvas. Besides the Artworks recently exhibited at artist David Reimondo’s personal exhibition in London, created by toasting slices of bread, Giuseppe Mastromatteo proposes new photos of his series dedicated to the senses that, thanks to photographic retouching, hint at a new and abstract meaning of the word ‘sense’. Besides the Fabbrica Eos’ artists, Marco Veronese’s works are an integral part of the exhibition, demonstrating the Cracking Art Group’s research, with his photographic works combined with plastic inserts; as well as Alessandro Algardi who, with his large monochrome works of art which show off and at the same time conceal endless indecipherable words, is a sort of spokesman for an artistic expression that is tied to the concept of language and to the negation of meaning.

Moss At Design Miami, Part One: Bavaria

MOSS at DESIGN MIAMI, part one: BAVARIA
At Design Miami 2008, Moss will unveil Bavaria, a spectacular new suite from Dutch design team Studio Job. This collection of five marquetry furnishings in Indian Rosewood features intricate and fine multi-colored laser-cut inlays in a bucolic farm motif. With its brightly-coloured symmetrical, ‘book-matched’ inlays, the pieces depict bountiful scenes of farm life, including red barns and silos, horse corrals and dog houses, sunflowers, vegetables, pigs, chickens, and other such iconography. While inspired by 17th and 18th century Bavarian hand-painted furniture and embracing the age old technique of marquetry, Studio Job employed modern technology to laser cut the inlays to achieve a flawlessly executed design and an almost seamless surface. The collection is offered in a limited edition of six pieces per model exclusive internationally to Moss.

Nynke Tynagel and Job Smeets of Studio Job offer Bavaria fresh off the heels of critical and commercial debuts of 2007 which included “Homework” a series of seven bronze sculptures, and “Robber Baron,” five monumental bronze furnishings introduced by Moss at Design Miami 2007. Studio Job was the subject of “Bold” the design team’s first retrospective at the inaugeral exhibition of the design museum Designhuis in the Netherlands and at the “Z33” exhibition in Belgium. They were the solo focus of Moss’s selection for Design Miami/Basel where pieces from “Robber Baron,” “Perished” and the complete suite of “Homework” were exhibited. The marketplace has responded to Studio Job’s signature of blurring lines between art and design as well, with their inclusion, along with works by Ron Arad and Shiro Kuramata, in Christie’s London Fall auction of blue chip contemporary fine art, “Post War & Contemporary Art” sale, the first time Design was included in such a sale.

And stay tuned for Moss at Design Miami part two: the Campana brothers.
Moss Gallery of Art and Design
Design Miami, Booth #16
December 3 – 6

Fernando and Humberto Campana have been awarded Designer of the Year by Design Miami, placing them in the company of previous winners Zaha Hadid, Marc Newson and Tokujin Yoshioka.
The designation is a reflection of the tremendous success the Campanas have had in recent years in both the academic world and in the market for limited edition studio design.
As the exclusive representative of work by the Estudio Campana in North America, Moss has selected works for presentation at Design Miami 2008 which reflect not only some of the most important works they have produced but also typify our long standing collaborative relationship. This shared vision has resulted in works such as a special 34 piece installation of Campane di Campana, a historic project orchestrated by Murray Moss between the Campanas and the Murano glassmaker Venini. Also on exhibition are exclusive variations on two of their most indelible creations, “Favela” and “Corallo,” created for Moss in 2004. Additional works include the “Panda Chair” from the celebrated “Banquette” series, and selections from the acclaimed “Sushi” series.

Lawrence Savage Galleries Adds Contemporary Furniture Designer Andrew Muggleton

Lawrence Savage Galleries, with locations in Coral Gables and the Miami Design District, announced today that it will represent contemporary furniture designer / maker Andrew Muggleton, whose work will be available at both galleries. Savage, who met the designer at a show in Palm Beach, said he was immediately taken with Muggleton’s work, and the two quickly struck a deal. “I just love his furniture and his sense of style,” said Savage, “and I think he will add an exciting new dimension to both galleries.” The galleries are located at 66 N.E. 40th Street, in the Design District, and 4217 Ponce de Leon Blvd. in Coral Gables. Telephone (305) 446-1222.

[Tall Curved Drawers (One Of A Kind) – Makore drawer fronts are framed in Ebonized oak. The drawer handles are carved from Ebonized Oak. Sand blasted glass has been profiled and built into the sides of the drawers. The curved drawers are created by bending thin layers of wood together and gluing them. Dimensions: 60in H X 23in. W X 22in D (Click on image for larger view)]

Andrew Muggleton is a true artisan who creates stunning furniture designs, many of which are one-of-a-kind. In designing his contemporary furniture, Muggleton combines extraordinary woods with metal and glass to create furnishings with spare, elegant lines. Dining room tables and chairs, console tables, beds, entertainment units and sets of drawers are crafted with a nod to comfort and an eye towards beauty. His furniture designs are innovative but not complicated, and usually feature large curves and a mix of materials – solid wood, veneer, metal and glass.

[Aluminum Dining Table – Rectangle dining table made using Bird’s Eye maple and Aluminum curved supports. All dining tables are custom made to order to any size. Materials: Bird’s Eye maple Wood, Aluminum curved supports with a glass top. Dimensions as shown: 64in (L) x 42 (W) x 30in (H) (Click on image for larger view)]

SIMPLIFY, SIMPLIFY, SIMPLIFY
Much like Henry David Thoreau, a complex man of many talents who worked hard to shape his craft and his life, simplicity is a hallmark of Muggleton’s design philosophy. “Keeping a design simple and avoiding the trap of filling empty space with unnecessary clutter is my most difficult – and most rewarding – challenge,” says the British born designer who now works out of his studio in Longmont, Colorado. “Simplicity in life is difficult and complicated to achieve,” added Muggleton. “It is easy to have too much going on and spend too much time organizing it.”

COMPLEX PROCESS YIELDS GRACEFUL ELEGANCE
Muggleton creates high quality modern furniture by bending and shaping exotic woods and blending other materials such as metal and glass to achieve the desired outcome. “The method of making curved furniture is a complex process, which has been practiced for centuries,” says Muggleton, who went on to explain: “Many thin layers of wood are joined together, placed on a mould and inserted into a vacuum press. The vacuum press shrinks itself around the mould, contorting the wood over the new shape. The press delivers a cumulative pressure of almost 4 tons over the new design.” Once the body of the work had been created in this way, says Muggleton, the same process is used to apply beautiful veneer onto the surface.

[Lotus Bench – Bent Bird’s Eye maple ends enclose the natural flowing arched base, inlaid with wenge. The seat is upholstered in Ultra-suede. Materials: Bird’s Eye Maple and Wenge wood and upholstered in Ultra-suede – Available in other woods and sizes. Dimensions as shown: 23in (W) x 71in (L) x 31in (H) – Three Person Bench, 20in (W) x 60in (L) x 31in (H) – Two Person Bench (Click on image for larger view)]

Elements of engineering, structure and architecture are all incorporated into Muggleton’s work, and each serve to inspire him daily. “Buildings, bridges and archways new and old all provide a fundamental foundation for my designs,” he says. Explaining his affinity for creating curved furniture, Muggleton says, “Everything in nature is curved, from the smooth pebbles on a beach to an egg. Sharp jagged edges do not make you feel at ease; but a field of straw bending in the wind, now that is inviting. This is the reason my work involves such beautiful and subtle curves.”

[Macassar Chaise Lounge – Beautifully stitched and upholstered leather supports are secured to stainless steel curved rails. The headrest is also upholstered in leather. The base is curved and tapered in Macassar Ebony, which is considered one of the most lustrous and beautiful of the ebony wood family and is notoriously difficult to bend. The seat can be positioned at an infinite number of angles for whether you are reading or simply relaxing. Materials: Macassar Ebony wood and Stainless Steel and Leather. Dimensions as shown: 20in (W) x 59in (L) x 29in (H) – Available in other woods and sizes (Click on image for larger view)]
