mikedirubboWednesday, 12/03/2014
Wolfson Auditorium, Room 1261
Building 1
300 N.E. Second Ave.
Miami, FL

Saxophonist, composer and bandleader Mike DiRubbo’s sound has been described as “deep, dark, immense, with a machete edge that denotes a ready-for-anything urban sensibility.”

DiRubbo has reigned supreme as one of the most durable and dynamic musicians of his generation since arriving in New York two decades ago. On his instrument, he has it all: from Benny Carter’s mastery of melody and Johnny Hodges’ ballad mellow tones to Charlie Parker’s light-speed fluency.

Jazz at Wolfson Presents performances are free and open to the public. For more info:

New York’s the cell, presents “Cocktales – Confessions of a Nymphomaniac” during Miami Art Basel at downtown Miami’s Railroad Blues, a 1920’s style speakeasy. Back by popular demand, the show returns for a second run this year. Audiences will have another opportunity to witness Eve’s escape from the Garden of Eden to Dr. Truth’s TV show, where Dr. Truth treats Eve’s predilection for erection and forces her to face her twisted sexuality. Directed by award-winning director Kira Simring and written by Tjasa Ferme with the cell’s Founding Artistic Director, Nancy Manocherian. Cocktales will feature Tjasa Ferme and New York comedian, Victor Cruz, along with local Miami talent, Stephanie White and Kristian Bikic.

The third edition of the Miami River Art Fair, an international, contemporary art fair, will take place at the Downtown Miami Convention Center inside the James L. Knight International Center.

This art fair was conceived as a showcase of world-class artists and galleries in an indoor booth setting at the Riverfront Hall. This grand show space overlooks the one-of-a-kind outdoor Riverwalk Sculpture Mall that will feature monumental sculpture on the banks of the historic Miami River.

MRAF is providing a unique fair-going experience during the art fair season as the only waterfront art fair. Miami River Art Fair is featuring both an indoor booth setting at the Riverfront Hall of the Miami Convention Center and the one-of-a-kind Riverwalk Sculpture Mall, which is featuring monumental sculpture on the banks of the historic Miami River with a presence of monumental sculptures from Italy, France, Cuba, Colombia, Korea, Spain and a special presentation from Mexico.

The Miami River Art Fair will feature galleries and projects with artists from all around the globe.

The Miami River Art Fair paves the way for the arts in our financial district as the pioneer art fair of the Downtown Miami – Brickell areas during the winter art fair season. The City of Miami welcomes the Miami River Art Fair as a herald for the revitalization of the Lower Miami River district, the city’s waterfront destination of the twenty-first century.

Please join us as we celebrate the 3rd anniversary of the Miami River Art Fair and the Opening Night Preview on December 4. Guests will enjoy Italian Limited Edition Organic Wine and exclusive performance uniquely created for the evening.

Funds raised at the event support the Little Dreams Foundation who was established by Orianne and Phil Collins in February 2000. Its mission is to fulfill the dreams of young aspiring talent without the means to achieve their goals.

Special Collectors’ Preview: December 4th, 4:00 – 6:00pm, $200 per guest. The exclusive first opportunity to preview and purchase works of art at the fair. Guests are also invited to stay for the Opening Night Preview from 6:00 – 11:00 pm.

Opening Night Preview Benefiting Little Dream Foundation, December 4th, 6:00 – 7:00pm, $100 per guest. Meet LDF’s celebrity mentors as Phil Collins, Romero Brito, David Frangioni among others godparents, sponsors and technical advisors. The 100% proceeds supports the Little Dreams Foundation

The Miami River Art Fair 2014 is endorsed by the City of Miami, the Miami River Commission, the City of Miami Beach, the Greater Miami Convention and Visitors Bureau and the Art Deco Preservation League.

Life and Death in ART BASEL by PL0T & Poplife
Officially Hosted by “Aquabooty”

From December 4th through December 7th Miami will host the 13th annual edition of Art Basel; one of the biggest and most important art gatherings worldwide. Over the past 3 years a unique response has grown for Art Basel within a very select group of artists and labels from the music industry who know about quality; making this the showcasing home and most influential period for Electronic Music in Miami in our opinion. Made for those who know.

Life and Death and PL0T have been pioneering this movement and its 3rd showcase is coming up. On Thursday December 4th, after their very successful second encounter during Art Basel 2014, PL0T will team up with its acclaimed partner label LIFE AND DEATH; and for the first time ever they will join forces with long time Miami Indie trailblazers from POPLIFE. Together they will bring to life the third edition of their Art Basel series of events. Starring Dixon, Mind Against, Thugfucker, Vaal (US Debut), DJ Tennis, Bob Moses and Recondite LIVE. The event will be hosted by “Aquabooty”, Dixon’ s long time promoter in the Miami scene.

City Theatre will serve up a sizzling series of Florida-inspired short plays entitled Swamp Shorts on Monday, November 17 from 6 – 7:30 p.m. at Miami Book Fair International’s newest attraction The Swamp.

The Swamp is a pop-up lounge (think Jimbo’s meets the Delano) that showcases Florida stories, music, dance, film, history, and art. All week long, Swamp events exploring the beauty, contradictions, uniqueness, and downright “weirdness” of life in Florida will be offered free of charge.

As a partner of Miami Book Fair International and the Center for Theatre and Literature at Miami Dade College, City Theatre was asked to solicit and curate a selection of shorts plays that align with The Swamp’s mission to reflect the personalities that animate Florida’s, and specifically Miami’s, cultural scene. A call for scripts was sent to homegrown playwrights, resulting in City Theatre’s Swamp Shorts, a vibrant one-night-only collection of readings of new short plays written by South Florida playwrights near and far, that celebrate the stories, characters, patois and sabor of the local community and Sunshine State.

Directed by City Theatre Guest Artist Gail Garrison, Swamp Shorts will be performed by The Swamp Troupe Acting Ensemble: Joshua Jean Baptiste, Ashley Chang, Chasity Hart, Andres Maldonado, David Kwiat, Jessica Brooke Sandford, Karen Stephens and Michael Uribe.

The Swamp Shorts play line-up includes:

Risen from the Dough by France-Luce Benson
Two Haitian sisters own a local bakery and learn that running a business in Miami is more than they expected.

Hey Girl by Jessica Farr
An encounter between a woman and a man waiting for a bus goes bad. Very bad.

Sand and Sam by Lauren Feldman
A woman mourning the death of a grandparent gets an assist from an understanding rabbi and a helpful gravedigger.

The Crocodile’s Bite by Vanessa Garcia
Four characters, all immigrants to the city, connect and collide one night in Miami.

A Pair of Miami Monologues by Gail Garrisan
A South Florida perspective on how to get from here to there, and how to look the part.

Roof by Ricky J. Martinez
A scene from a new full-length play set on a rooftop overlooking Biscayne Blvd.

Swamp Girl by Marj O’Neill-Butler
A South Florida single who’s more comfortable clubbing, considers an invitation for a blind date to the Everglades.

Two of the region’s literary disrupters combine to present this free event from 6 – 7:30 p.m. on Monday, November 17 at The Swamp, located in the big tent at the Miami Dade College Wolfson Campus on the southeast corner of NE Third Street and Second Avenue. Craft beers, food trucks and fun take place on The Swamp Porch prior to and following Swamp Shorts. Free parking is available in the adjacent garage.

There is no doubt that the screenplay is an essential piece in the creation of a film. It is an important Foundation constructed from words, surrounding the organization of distinct cinematographic elements to cultivate the future spectator of the movie. For this reason, two prominent screen writers and directors, León Ichaso (Bitter Sugar, Piñero El Cantante) and Joe Cardona (Café con Leche, Jose Marti: Legacy of Freedom, Celia: The Queen), converse about the occupation of screenwriting. This panel will be moderated by Orlando Rojas, screenwriter, film director and programmer for the Tower Cinema of Miami Dade College.

chanceNovember 14, 8:30am – 10:00am
Miami Center for Architecture and Design (MCAD)
100 NE 1st Ave
Miami, Florida 33132

Take a CHANCE ! Taking a chance is at the heart of every CreativeMornings chapter. It’s a chance the organizers take to start their own chapter, the chance a speaker takes to share their story and, of course, the chance the attendees take to get up early in the morning and listen.

This November, we’re celebrating those uncertainties and risks with the theme of Chance and our speaker Robin Hill, photographer for architecture and design.

2014 begins my 28th year as a professional photographer. Back in 2006 I had the good fortune of spending a few hours with my hero, Julius Shulman at the opening of the Glass House in New Canaan, Connecticut. He was 96 years old and still working and was in his 7th decade as a photographer which always helps to give me some perspective. (which as an Architectural Photographer is a very handy thing!) I’m deeply passionate about my chosen field and strongly believe in the power of design to affect our lives in a profound way. I see myself as being an integral part of the design community and my tool is photography. I’ve been very fortunate to have worked with some of the top names in the field, and much of the force of their creative work is displayed throughout the website.

Concept Miami will focus on “fresh-to-market” and secondary market artwork, as well as works by blue-chip artists and modern contemporary masters. Limited to approximately 30 carefully selected dealers, the fair has been designed as a sophisticated, elegant waterfront oasis for collectors during the frenetic Art Basel Week. The fair is located within the downtown Arts & Entertainment District, adjacent to the Perez Art Museum Miami and the Frost Museum, two of Miami’s most prestigious visual arts institutions, and in proximity to all major downtown hotels and Brickell World Plaza, one of the largest banking centers in North America. The inaugural edition of Concept, a new art fair for downtown Miami during Art Basel Miami Week, will launch December 2nd through 7th aboard the SeaFair yacht docked at Bayfront Park as it awaits its permanent location to open in 2015 at Miami’s Museum Park. Modern and contemporary art, installations, performances, and cutting edge audience engagement technology will be presented in the intimate and luxurious SeaFair exhibition space and surrounding park, delivering a distinct and decidedly refined art fair experience for the public and veteran collectors alike.

Concept aims to position its exhibitors and attendees at the center of Miami’s expanding Arts & Entertainment District amidst one of the world’s fastest growing cities and luxury markets. R.R. and the Expansion of the Tropics is a project developed by Mexico City-based artist Mario Garcia Torres (b.1975, Monclova, Mexico) specifically for the Pérez Art Museum Miami in which a number of seemingly unrelated subjects such as Robert Rauschenberg, climate change and Florida are threaded together to form a series of conceptual and political questions. Garcia Torres has long been interested in exploring little-known issues within recent art history and in addressing parallel subjects that find new meanings and contexts through his careful juxtapositions. This project will create a number of gestures, including photographic documentation, film, music and other types of information displays.
Project Gallery: Mario Garcia Torres is organized by Pérez Art Museum Miami Chief Curator Tobias Ostrander.

Christie’s and JW Marriott Present Warhol Pops Up In Miami 12/3/14-12/4/14

Christie’s and JW Marriott Present Warhol Pops Up In Miami
Wednesday, December 3rd and Thursday, December 4th, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
warholJW Marriott Marquis
255 Biscayne Boulevard Way
Miami, Florida 33131
Exhibit Is Open To The Public And Free Of Charge

Christie’s, JW Marriott® Hotels & Resorts, and JW Marriott Marquis Miami are pleased to announce a pop-up art sale at the JW Marriott Marquis Miami, which will be the first time original art will be available for purchase at a JW Marriott property.
The unique selling event, which will be held December 3-4 on the hotel’s fifth floor, will coincide with Art Basel Miami Beach 2014. The public is welcome to view the exhibit free-of-charge.

The exhibit is part of Andy Warhol at Christie’s, a multi-year, multi-platform partnership with The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts. A curated group of more than 20 paintings, photographs, prints, and works on paper, many of which have never been seen before and with price points ranging from $3,000 to $50,000, will be available for sale to the public and hotel guests.

“This exhibition presents a unique opportunity for collectors to acquire original works by Andy Warhol that come directly from Warhol’s collection – he’s the only person who has owned it. Collectors have the added bonus that proceeds of the sales benefit The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts’ grant-making initiatives,” comments Amelia Manderscheid, Associate Vice President, Specialist, Warhol Private Sales.

As with all sales in Andy Warhol at Christie’s—including live auctions, online-only auctions, and private sales — all works are drawn from the collection of The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, with proceeds benefitting the Foundation’s grant-making programs.

db Bistro Moderne Miami, Chef Daniel Boulud’s restaurant located within the JW Marriott Marquis Miami, will also pay homage to Warhol during the week with dishes and cocktails inspired by the artist’s works. Chef Boulud – who cooked for Warhol himself in the 1980s in NYC – Executive Chef Jason Pringle, and Pastry Chef Jerome Maure channel their creativity on the chefs’ canvas, the plate. Guests who visit the gallery may bring their ticket to db Bistro to redeem a complimentary Warhol-inspired cocktail from December 2-7. Cocktails include:

POP ART: red wine, coke, lime juice, served in a Campbell’s soup can; VELVET UNDERGROUND: gin, St. Germaine, banana, sparking wine, hibiscus; CANDY DARLING: white wine, ginger liqueur, soda, mint ice ball.

As the official hotel partner of Art Basel, Design Miami, Art Miami, and the Perez Art Museum, the JW Marriott Marquis Miami is immersed in the growing art scene already present in the city. Besides its more than $250,000 in sponsorships, and its support of other arts organizations such as the Miami International Symphony Orchestra, Florida Grand Opera, and others, the hotel and JW Marriott brand boast a strategic partnership with Christie’s, the world’s leading art auction house. The partnership began during Art Basel 2010 when the hotel featured a popular exhibition of Post-War and Contemporary highlights which included pieces from artists such as Andy Warhol, Antony Gormley, and Damien Hirst. The hotel also houses a museum-caliber art collection worth more than $1 million, called the Art of Reinvention.

“We are excited to partner with Christie’s Auction House for the fifth consecutive year during Art Basel. This unique art event celebrating the remarkable works of one of America’s most important art showmen while supporting the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts will be a must see for Art Basel visitors and local art enthusiasts,” said Florencia Tabeni, General Manager, JW Marriott Marquis Miami.

The exhibit will be launched at an invitation-only lunch and panel discussion titled ‘Disruptors: Thinking Outside the Box’ on Tuesday, December 2nd. Confirmed panelists include Daniel Boulud, chef-owner of DB Bistro, Eric Chang, co-founder and designer for Hellman-Chang furniture, Matthew Von Ertfelda, vice president Insight, Strategy + Innovation at Marriott International, Amelia Manderscheid, Christie’s Andy Warhol expert, and Eric Shiner, Director, Andy Warhol Museum. MIAMI magazine is the official media partner and moderator for the panel.

The nation’s finest and largest literary gathering, Miami Book Fair International, presented by The Center for Literature and Theatre @ Miami Dade College (MDC), a program of Miami Dade College’s MDCulture, will celebrate its 31st edition this year.

New to the Fair this year will be Playtime, an international children’s theatre festival presented by Teatro Prometeo, and The Swamp, a pop-up lounge featuring live music and writers whose works explore the beauty, contradictions, uniqueness and weirdness of life in the Sunshine State. Both are made possible by a grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, as part of its Knight Arts Challenge.

The Book Fair this year will feature 6WordsMiami, a community project where all are invited to submit their six-word stories. Whether it’s a memoir, fiction, fantasy or other – all submissions are welcome, though the Fair hopes some are inspired by Miami life. A 6WordsMiami reading will take place at the Book Fair. Some stories will be paired up with original photography and published in a limited-edition postcard set. Submissions will be accepted in English, Spanish or Creole. There is no limit to how many stories one can submit. Submission dates are June 15 through October 1 at 6wordsmiami@gmail.com and through social media using the hashtag #6WordsMiami.

The Miami Book Fair, one of Miami’s flagship cultural events, will treat book lovers to eight days of cultural and educational activities, including the beloved Evenings With… series, the IberoAmerican Authors program, literacy and learning activities for children and teens during Generation Genius Days, and The Kitchen, demos and panels for food enthusiasts in partnership with the college’s Miami Culinary Institute. Fairgoers will also enjoy more than 200 exhibitors from around the country selling books in a festive atmosphere and hundreds of authors reading and discussing new books during the weekend Street Fair.

Miami Book Fair International 2014 promises to be another exceptional literary event!

Miami, FL 33131
Buy Tickets Online

This year’s event will be held at Downtown Miami’s spectacular Historic Alfred I. Dupont Building, truly one of South Florida’s premiere event spaces.

Sponsor Bacardi will supply their repertoire of brands including Grey Goose and Bombay Sapphire at double the bars of last year’s event (to help keep lines short — we heard your requests!). Prices at cash bars will range from $4 for nonalcoholic beverages, to $6 for well drinks or Hatuey Beer, and $8 for drinks mixed with top-shelf spirits.

On top of it all, this year’s VIP section will be set up inside the building’s spooky vacant bank vault complete with OPEN BAR, and for everyone else there will be undead “bank tellers” serving up your favorite drinks! AND, TRACY YOUNG is back by popular demand this year spinning your favorite dance and electronic tunes with the assist from retro-flavored DJ Bill James along with three DJs new to the Halloween Ball: Alex Ramos, Carlos Rojas, and Maximus 3000!

For your convenience, we are happy to offer valet parking at the event for $15. If the valet isn’t for you, there are parking lots for $5-$7 surrounding the venue. And of course, if you want to skip driving altogether, the event is located very close to Metrorail and Metromover connections (but remember, the Metro stops running at midnight and doesn’t reopen til 5AM — so if you come this way, plan to get a ride home!).

In 2014 we’ve given it all for equality, and that goes for the Halloween Ball, too. We’ve revamped and reloaded — and the only thing we’re missing to make the night truly terrifying is YOU!

Emerge Miami’s 100th Bike Ride: Celebrate Diversity Miami, will be rolling through local communities on Saturday, Oct. 11, 2014, giving people a unique opportunity to learn more about several of our culturally diverse neighborhoods, and to connect with fellow greater Miami residents in a fun and interactive way.

More than 100 cyclists are expected to attend this family-friendly event that will be kicking off Celebrate Diversity Miami, a new large-scale community engagement initiative that aims to promote a deepened sense of connectivity between the culturally and ethnically diverse communities of greater Miami. The group, departing from Government Center in downtown Miami, will visit Overtown, Liberty City, and Little Haiti before concluding with a celebratory picnic at the beautiful, waterfront Museum Park, which recently opened up to the public this summer.

Along the way, riders will first stop by Overtown’s Dorsey Park, where URGENT, Inc. has been working on several mural projects documenting the rich history of that community. The second stop is at the MCI KaBoom Playground in Liberty City, where the Miami Children’s Initiative has been taking a block-by-block approach to breaking the cycle of poverty by investing in the potential of every child. Then riders will make a third stop in Little Haiti to experience the Little Haiti Cultural Center’s recently opened Caribbean Marketplace, an entertainment venue for showcasing arts & crafts, culture, and food. Finally, everyone will make their way over to Museum Park, and come together to celebrate Emerge Miami’s 100th ride milestone.

Emerge Miami and Celebrate Diversity Miami are proud to have the enthusiastic support of the Urban Renewal Greater Enhancement National Team (URGENT), Inc., Miami Children’s Initiative (MCI), and Little Haiti Cultural Center.

More information on the participating organizations is available at www.emergemiami.com and www.facebook.com/CelebrateDiversityMiami. Friends of St. Jude (FOSJ) Miami, the young professionals group dedicated to raising awareness and funding for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital®, and chaired by Jeb Bush Jr., invites the South Florida community to the seventh annual International Dermatology “It’s All About the Kids” event, presented by the Andrés Asion Foundation.

“We are excited to host another successful event, to ensure children battling cancer and other life-threatening diseases can receive the treatment and care they need,” said Jeb Bush Jr., chair of FOSJ. “Thanks to our partners and South Florida’s ongoing support, Friends of St. Jude has raised more than $600,000 to help ensure no family ever receives a bill from St. Jude for their treatment, travel, housing or food.”

The event will feature a tasting menu and cocktails, as well as music performances by The Culture Band and DJ Troubles. This year’s hosts include award-winning journalist and anchor of Univision Network’s news-magazine show Primer Impacto Pamela Silva Conde and recording artist Jencarlos Canela.

“I’ve had the pleasure to witness first-hand, the great work that St. Jude does for their patients and their families,” said Silvia Trinidad, from International Dermatology Research. “I am wholeheartedly committed to St. Jude and their tireless work in the advancements of cancer research and treatment for the children.”

“In many cases, St. Jude is the last hope for children suffering from cancer, who have previously not responded well to standard treatments, because St. Jude is where doctors send their toughest cases as the hospital has the world’s best survival rates for the most aggressive childhood cancers”, said Andres Asion. “They are at the forefront of developing new treatment options that are then shared freely with hospitals around the world.”

Open enrollment for the Affordable Care Act (ACA) is coming up again! Are you ready? While the penalty for being uninsured the first year is relatively small, it grows quickly each year. Even more important than the fine, though, is that being uninsured can be devastating for an artist or arts organization if anything happens. It is important to be aware of your rights and the benefits available, as well as the penalties.

8:00-9:00, Q&A Social Hour

Art/Work Connections is a monthly series of seminars presented by Life Is Art featuring business professionals speaking on a variety of topics vital to the success of working artists. This panel covers all the aspects of the Affordable Care Act and helps you understand what your options are. This is crucial information for artists and art organizations. Participants also receive resources to help them navigate the world of health insurance. Following the seminar, there is social time with sponsored refreshments and an opportunity for personal questions to the presenters, as well as assistance signing up on the spot.

The evening’s program provides important information and support at one time and in one place; everything you need to know about the new law but were afraid to ask, as well as assitance signing up. Although this is the second year of the Affordable Care Act, many artists and non-profits remain woefully unaware of the details. Though the program is still confusing, there are many benefits and subsidies that could be available to artists and organizations. Come and learn how to navigate the system for your best results in a friendly and helpful atmosphere.

The current no-panhandling ordinance in downtown has been misinterpreted to include street performance, and we would like to legally distinguish between busking and panhandling. A thriving street performance culture has had a documented positive impact on local economies, street safety and neighborhood vitality in cities such as New York, New Orleans, Seattle and San Francisco. We would like to add Miami to the list of cities embracing public performance in public spaces.

This October #MiamiCarnivalTurns30. To celebrate this milestone, the Miami Broward Carnival Committee Inc. has partnered with Pèrez Art Museum Miami (PAMM) to host a Carnival inspired kick-off event at the musuem(1103 Biscayne Blvd, Miami, FL 33130) to open the 2014 Miami Broward Carnival season. The event will feature a steel band performance, masquerade costume design workshop, and more on Thursday, October 2nd from 6:00pm-9:00pm. Models in traditional Caribbean style masquerade attire will greet guests as they enjoy the mesmerizing steel band music playing in the background. Guests will also be able to view Beatriz Milhazes: Jardim Botânico exhibit, the first major U.S. retrospective on Brazilian artist Beatriz Milhazes, whose large-scale abstract paintings were inspired by the decorations of Carnival. One of #Miami Broward Carnival’s own masquerade bands will be leading the workshop on the history and design of traditional masquerade costumes.

South Florida’s diverse cultural makeup has allowed it to be a stage for showcasing and celebrating the unique traditions of its residents. The Miami Broward Carnival is one of the area’s largest annual events, drawing upwards of 30,000 participants and spectators each year.

“Serving Miami’s Caribbean community is part of PAMM’s core mission”, said PAMM Director Thom Collins. “We’re thrilled to be a part of the Miami Broward Carnival festivities this year and hope that our partnership will encourage even more members of Miami’s Caribbean community to visit the museum.” Works by Caribbean artists are on view throughout the museum as part of the permanent collection installations, and a solo show by Haitian-born, Miami-based Adler Guerrier is also currently on view. Prior to Beatriz Milhazes:  Jardim Botânico opening, the museum presented a major group show of works by Caribbean artists and hosted a kick-off for Caribbean American Heritage Month, a Caribbean video and film series, and a symposium relating to Caribbean art.

Miami Broward Carnival Chair Joan Hinkson addressed the new event saying, “Partnering with PAMM is the perfect way to celebrate 30 years of Miami Carnival as Miami Broward Carnival continues growing and sharing the exciting traditions of Caribbean culture with a larger, more diverse audience.”

About Pèrez Art Museum Miami
Pérez Art Museum Miami was originally founded as the Center for Fine Arts, and was strictly an exhibiting organization with no collection of its own. In 1996 the museum was renamed Miami Art Museum and dedicated itself to collecting and exhibiting international art of the 20th and 21st centuries with a special emphasis on art of the Americas. Since then, the collection has grown steadily across a range of media. The new Pérez Art Museum Miami in downtown Miami’s Museum Park strengthens the Museum’s role as a vital cultural and educational center. Opened as Pérez Art Museum Miami in recognition of a landmark gift of cash and art from Jorge M. Jonerik Murphy — the founder of JEMKIDS — talked about the event saying, “Being a physically fit child isn’t about being a great athlete, it is about being a healthy person. If a child has poor posture, it will affect everything from self esteem to performance in school to long term health issues.  Therefore, children should be physically active early on to create strong, healthy bodies.” Jonerik has been certified by the International Youth Conditioning Association (IYCA) as a Youth Fitness Specialist (Level 2). He has a passion to help kids be healthy and move the best they can, whether it is for life’s everyday activities or for sports. JEMKIDS motto is: Infusing Fitness with Fun!

About PowerFit Studios
Built on the scientific foundation of whole-body vibration, the Power Plate at Power Fit Studios can grant bodies such benefits as improved muscle tone, increased circulation, and higher bone density. When combined with a

reasonable amount of rocket fuel, session spent atop the platform can accelerate users fitness goals. The private
studio also supports clients’ inner and outer well-being with more traditional approaches, including Zumba, and Latin Ballroom dance,as well as a range of soothing spa services. Power Fit Studios also offers specialty classes in aromatherapy, chakra-meditation and vision board workshops.

About JEMKIDS
JEMKIDS was created by Jonerik Murphy to help develop a culture of physically fit children at a time when the statistics show that the obesity rate is increasing throughout the youth population. While many schools are reducing or eliminating physical education programs to dedicate more time to classroom work, something is being left out: Physical literacy. Simply put, today’s youth spend too much time sitting and not moving. No one can argue that improving performance in school isn’t important. However, it should not come at the expense of physical development.
In this advanced technological age, more children are spending time playing video games than playing outside. JEMKIDS’ programs were created to address this lack of physical activity. As children mature, there is a window of opportunity to develop motor skills and movement skills most efficiently. If children are inactive during the body’s maturation process, than these skills will either be limited or not developed at all. Consequently, there are short term (children being overweight) and long term effects (increased medical expenses and complications as adults). www.jemkids.com

Batch Gastropub: New Fall Menu Excites by Betty Alvarez

The first time I’ve been to Batch Gastropub was to celebrate my friend’s birthday party. When I first went in, I was amazed about how casual but comfortable the restaurant is. It’s a gastropub where the menu was approachable and there was an expansive drink list. We celebrated during their happy hour and the placed got packed as soon as I got there. My girlfriends and I indulged in their wonderful happy hour menu and their regular menu. A memorable time for all!

This time around, I got the opportunity to preview their Autumn menu which I was excited to taste. I could not wait for the delectable surprises that this place that had brought my tastebuds into action.

First of all, I was greeted with a cornucopia of cocktail samplings. The one that stood out is the Green Pepper Mojito as I thought it was going to be super sweet but to my surprise it wasn’t. I could taste the green pepper flavor in my mouth but it was not overwhelming to sour my taste of the food that I was about to sample.

Batch gave us two types of menus to choose from for our tasting one that had the house made meatballs or the General Tso’s Cauliflower dish as the starter.

We began with a snack: Salmon Crudo comprised with the House Cured Faroe Island Salmon on top of Florida peaches with Truffled vinaigrette and maldon salt. This small snack was a different experience as I never tasted a salmon on top of a slice of peach before. The salmon taste came to my tastebuds first and then complimented it with the sweet peach infusing both into a nice sweet and delectable light bite.

Then came the starters, the house made meatballs of duck, short rib and pork belly on a sweet potato puree and Serrano ham gave me great delight. The meatballs were warm, soft to chew and the sweet potato puree gave it a good additive to my palate.

The next starter was the Tuna Poke-Peanut Butter “Crumble”, wonton, scallion, and crispy ginger. Although I did not taste the peanut butter but the scallion and the crispy ginger is what stood out of my mind. It was delicious.

For the veggies part, a Batch Kale Salad was served. Now I never had Kale in my life so I was delighted and nervous at the same time in trying this salad comprised of raw kale, hearts of palm, peanuts, strawberry vinaigrette, and parmesan. To my surprise, I loved it. The kale was not overpowering and the vinaigrette made everything come together. Definitely will have to try that salad again next time I go to Batch Gastropub.

Now the main course: The Drunken Short Rib which is a whiskey braised short rib with Vanilla and Sour Mash, Creamy polenta and Cinammon roasted carrots on the side. The meat was so tender that it was falling out of the bone. I could taste the whisky a bit but my memory was the warm, soft, juicy meat that these ribs had. Other than the cinnamon that covered the carrots it was also mixed with a coffee flavored sauce which had a distinctive taste.

The sweets that culminated our experience is the Carnival Donuts-fried dough, powdered sugar, with a warm chocolate ganache and Kahlua syrup. Now these round donuts were the best and my favorite was dumping it in the Kahlua syrup rather than the chocolate ganache. It was so taste was so much richer to my palate.
A very sweet experience to end this preview tasting.

All in all, I can’t wait for this autumn menu to be announced to the general public as Batch Gastropub wants to exemplify the farm to table concept as it is healthier option for everyone but with full of taste. Kudos to Batch Gastropub!

Celebrate the opening of Beatriz Milhazes: Jardim Botânico with live music by Alma Tropicalia and a waterfront bar on the terrace. Between sets enjoy Brazilian grooves from DJ Marcello Bentine.
The celebration features the Miami debut of Brazilian band Alma Tropicalia. The DC-based band reimagines the psych-samba sounds of 60’s tropicália music from Brazil, a mind-bending mix of tropical rhythms, soulful funk grooves and day-glo psychedelia that has quickly earned the group ecstatic reviews and packed performances across the region. The band’s daring lineup combines the masterful Brazilian jazz vocalist Elin (featured on Thievery Corporation’s Brazil-inspired album “Saudade”) with the unhinged experimentation of some of the top backing musicians in today’s rock and world music scene (featuring members of Cyro Baptista’s Beat the Donkey, Bio Ritmo, and more).

Fridge Art Fair Returns to Little Havana for Art Basel Miami Week
Fridge Art Fair is pleased to announce that its second Miami edition will take place at the 3rd Street Garage Artspace, 300 SW 12th Avenue, Miami with additional presentations at a legendary Little Havana location, Ball & Chain (http://www.ballandchainmiami.com/) December 4 – 9, 2014, thanks to major sponsorship by the Barlington Group and returning media sponsor Arte Fuse. Once again, Founding Director Eric Ginsburg, a noted painter in his own right (mainly for his soulful portraits of dogs), will lead the Fridge team.

“People should not be afraid to go and see art, and it should not cost a fortune,’ said Ginsburg. “I want people to be happy, we want everyone from all walks of life to come to this fair and say, ‘that was really cool!’” In that spirit he has subtitled this edition “De Staatliches Bauhaus Rijpe Mango Editie,” explaining:
“In Hinduism, Lord Ganesha holds a perfectly ripe mango as a symbol of the potential for perfection. The mango is a tropical icon, a fruit of love. Pure, but sexy…like Miami!”

Cara Hunter Viera of Fridge will produce the Fair and NYC based curator, writer and dealer Linda DiGusta, co-director of Fridge 2014 in New York, stays on the team as curatorial consultant.

Fridge Art Fair was born on New York’s Lower East Side in May 2013, making it’s debut – under the tagline “Can you fit into the Fridge?” — at Kazuko Miyamoto’s small but storied storefront, Gallery OneTwentyEight. The inaugural Miami show was presented at the somewhat more spacious Pax, on Calle Ocho. On March 31st 2014, Fridge was displaced from its expanded Lower East Side venue by the Dept. of Buildings closure of the historic and beloved Angel Orensanz Center, but was able to rebound and open as planned on May 8 and present an innovative, successful fair (including large-scale installations, a video lounge curated by Jeanne Wilkinson, and a Ferrari, presented by Dorian Grey Gallery, painted by John “Crash” Matos) at a 7,000 sf waterfront venue in Long Island City thanks to major sponsorship from Plaxall. With a loyal following of presenting galleries, organizations and artists, Fridge is growing while retaining its character as an intimate, accessible and enjoyable event.

Miami DWNTWN Art Days
September 19-21, All Day
dwntwnartdays Downtown Miami
Website
Facebook

Art Days is designed to bring together and promote the cultural community, in addition to facilitating and incentivizing art exhibitions and other cultural activities. In its third year, Art Days, supported by the Miami Downtown Development Authority (DDA), continues to provide free inspiring art activities across the Downtown cultural landscape. Working in partnership with a variety of arts and culture institutions, organizations and artists, Art Days is a three-day cultural exploration that incorporates countless free events and exhibitions for the community to experience and enjoy. Art Days offers something for everyone from family activities, panel discussions, international exhibitions, bike tours, walking tours and so much more!

Art Days is comprised of three components:
The Hub
located at MCAD, 100 NE 1st Ave, Miami, FL 33132
The “hub” is the epicenter for information on Art Days. In 2013 over 130 events took place around Downtown Miami, so it’s worthwhile to take a moment and set an itinerary to make the most out of the weekend!
The hub is the place to…
…find someone to help you navigate through the vast amount of things to do.
…start most walking and bike tours.
…be creative and paint your own unique t-shirt.
…hang out and connect with your friends on social media.
…find people to welcome you to Downtown Miami.

The Fringe
The “Fringe” is a set of curated activations of Downtown Miami in the form of visual and performance art projects. The visual art projects are commissioned, site-specific public art installations, curated by a specialist contemporary art curator Amanda Sanfilippo, and located within a one-mile radius around the Hub for easy walkability. This year’s Fringe has been initiated in partnership with Miami Dade County’s Art in Public Places.

The Events
Throughout the three day weekend, over 60 different art organizations, culture organizations, non-profits and artists activate their spaces with exhibitions, performances, cocktails meet and greet, art talks, panels and more. New for 2014 is an increased family friendly programming and children activities to accommodate the growing number of families living in Downtown.
Realizing the lack of performing arts in last year’s mix of events, the Miami DDA, in collaboration with the Olympia Theatre, is debuting a series of performance pieces in public areas and venues all around Downtown
As a guideline, here is a schedule for the weekend:
Thursday: Media/VIP Preview of the Fringe and Art Days
Friday: School tours/ Exhibitions openings/ post -work cocktail activities
Saturday: Museum day; art tours and exhibitions
Sunday: Cultural activities/bike tours

More than a dozen musicians come together to celebrate the life and legacy of one of the most recognized and beloved artists of Venezuela: Simón Díaz.

Many around the world have heard some version of “Caballo Viejo” including Gipsy King’s “Bamboleo,” unaware of who the composer is, but for Venezuelans he is perhaps the greatest representative of their folklore and one of their country’s icon: Simon Diaz.

For 6 decades, Simón Díaz, was part of the popular culture of Venezuela and became, without doubt, one of the most beloved characters of the country as a singer, songwriter, actor, comedian, television talk show host and cultural promoter.

On August 22, a constellation of stars will be offering a tribute to Simon at the Olympia Theatre at Gusman Center for the Performing Arts. A show that will take the audience on a journey through the musical life of the singer, with anecdotes, memories and lots of music. Under the musical direction of Carlos Puchi, guest artists will perform his most famous compositions, such as “Caballo Viejo,” “Sabana,” “Mi Querencia,” “Tonada de Luna Llena,” “Mercedes,” “El Loco Juan Carbina” and many more.

Guest artists include: Huascar Barradas, Luz Marina, María Teresa Chacín, Frank Quintero, Ilan Chester, María Rivas, Karina, Fernando and Juan Carlos, Julio Briceño (Amigos Invisible) Alberto Slezynger (Daiquirí), Saúl Vera, Rummy Olivo, Roberto Torres, José Luis Rodríguez (El Puma) and Simón Díaz’s granddaughter, Daniela Diaz Morales. Elí Bravo and Bettsimar Díaz will serve as emcees.

The fame of Simón Díaz went beyond Venezuela’s borders and his songs were performed around the world by artists such as: Mercedes Sosa, Joan Manuel Serrat, Julio Iglesias, Richard Clayderman, Ray Conniff, Gipsy Kings, Roberto Torres, Caetano Veloso, Danny Rivera, Cheo Feliciano Gilberto Santa Rosa, among others. They were also translated into several languages. In September 2008, he was awarded a Latin Grammy for their Lifetime Achievement Award.

Proceeds will be donated to the Foundation Friends of Children with Cancer

Digest Miami hosts Private Belgian Beer Dinner at BE Bistro

Bistro BE, Brickell’s exciting new authentic Belgian restaurant, made its highly anticipated debut. The chic and sophisticated eatery aims to enchant Miami palates with a lively food and drink scene, featuring an expansive menu of Belgian delights and extensive beer list, with upwards of 70 different selections!

Working in tandem with restaurant owners Emmanuel Verschueren and Tim Michels, executive chef Frederik Appelt oversees the menu, which showcases the sophisticated French technique and bold flavors Belgian cuisine is known for. A newcomer to Miami, the Belgian-born chef is no stranger to the kitchen. Appelt previously served as executive chef at some of Belgium’s most esteemed restaurants, including Bistro Kosmopole, one of the most visited restaurants in Leuven, as well as Gastropub de Molen, widely recognized during Appelt’s tenure as one of the country’s best restaurant’s offering classic Belgian fare.

Digest Miami hosted a private Belgian Beer Dinner at the newly opened Bistro BE in Brickell with Stella Artois and flew in Master Beer Sommelier Marc Stroobandt to curate this special multi-course, beer paired dinner. Stroobandt travels the world inspiring and educating people. He has a profound knowledge of his subject and enduring relationships with both beer producers & the hospitality industry. He is a leading authority in the art and science of food and beer pairing and has created a number of programs to bring that knowledge to others.

The evening began with a welcome reception featuring small bites and a cheese tasting, followed by a demonstration of the 9-step Stella Artois Pouring Ritual and seated dinner.

Beer Pro Tip: Some beers taste good, but don’t smell nice. When this is the case, use a straight glass.  If it smells good, use a fancy glass.

We also took part in the super cute “I drink to your face” ritual,  crossing hands to touch glasses to each others’ cheeks.

With beer culture so closely tied to Belgian culture, the beer menu boasts a staggering list of rare Belgian brews, as well as recognizable brands. There are more than 70 different selections available by the bottle and eight on tap. Servers are also trained in beer etiquette, from pouring technique down to the proper glassware. Central to the design of the dining room is a wall display behind the bar showcasing glassware for each of the beers served. Guests will also find a comprehensive list of well-priced wines by the glass or bottle to complement their meal.

Bistro BE brings guests as close to Belgium as one can get without a passport. The sleek, contemporary décor is reminiscent of a modern Belgian bistro with blond wood, white furnishings and modernist lighting. The 1,970 square-foot restaurant seats approximately 110, including communal chef’s tables positioned adjacent to the airy open kitchen, a spacious bar and covered patio.

Bistro BE is open daily for lunch and dinner, 11:30 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. Brunch will launch at a later date. Located on the north side of the Axis Building at 1111 SW 1st Avenue in downtown Miami. Street and municipal parking available. Telephone: (305) 375-0975; www.BistroBE.com.

Teatro Prometeo’s is the product of the artistic vision of Teresa María Rojas and the pedagogical vision of Miami-Dade College President Eduardo Padrón. Throughout the years, Prometeo has featured many Miami and U.S. premieres of local and international playwrights. It has also carried out programs specifically for all audiences and ventured into performances in non-traditional theater spaces such as community centers, the street, and public transportation. Teatro Prometeo is currently helmed by director Joann Maria Yarrow, who took over the reins and created a Professional Acting Conservatory with the mission of providing actor training in Spanish as one could receive in English. Life Is Art  presents Art/Work Connections #21: Understanding Grants for Artist with Joshua Kingston at Eleazar Delgado Studio Tuesday, July 15, 2014. Art/Work Connections is a monthly series of seminars presented by Life Is Art featuring business professionals speaking on a variety of topics vital to the success of working artists. This month we covered  Understanding Grants for Artist.

About Joshua Kingston:
Joshua Kingston was raised in a military family, moving often and quickly learned to adapt and connect with people. He studied Theater, Music and Literature in college and has worked as a Vet Tech and a Software Developer before settling in to his true calling, writing. Always feeling the need to have more knowledge, he went back to school to obtain a Masters in Theology.

Today, he writes helps artists verbalize their art into statements and galleries develop catalog material while his passion is the challenge of grant writing for both individual artists, projects, and small/mid-sized Arts organizations.

About Eleazar Delgado Studio:
Originally conceived at our home, Eleazar Delgado Studio has always been the artist’s creative space. The idea grew into a gathering place for our friends, mostly artists in their own rights, to showcase their current work and preview concepts. We made it official in 2010 when we opened a public space in Wynwood. Today in addition to being Eleazar’s personal art studio, we host local talents and leaders who need a professional environment to showcase, educate, and enrich the community at large.

About the Art/Work Connections Program
The Art/Work Connections program is a monthly series of business seminars held at galleries and art spaces around South Florida targeted at artists and those working in the arts. Everyone is welcome and can benefit from them. Business professionals are brought in to cover a wide variety of topics including health care, financial planning, contract negotiation, copyright law, portfolio development, social media, marketing and much more.

How might we design more participatory creative moments in Miami? Join us for a community conversation and brainstorm.

Miami’s art community is growing and changing every day, helping to build a more vibrant and expressive city. Yet for many of us, our experience with that community is mostly one-way interactions, as audience or viewer or supporter. Participatory art invites people to join in the process of creating a work—whether it’s painting, performance or experiment—and can transform people’s ideas of art and their relationship with the local artistic community.

Join the Arts and Business Council of Miami and WhereBy.Us for an evening of inspiration and community creativity as we brainstorm ideas for building participatory artistic experiences in our city. We’ll hear lightning talks from local artists, innovators and creators, and then break into small groups to create new ideas we might build together. The most promising ideas will be eligible for small funding that can help make them happen.

Food, drink and live music will be on hand. Food and drink begin at 6pm; speakers start at 6:30; our brainstorm starts at 7:15. Anyone and everyone is welcome.

We look forward to seeing you!

Social Media Day Miami 2014 at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts on Sunday, June 29, 2014.  What a wonderful turn out. This years Social Media Day had many of Miami’s top social media influencers together to produce a one day conference. This was the 5th anniversary since Mashable started the event to recognize social media in all its forms. Miami has been building a strong social media community and it was great to see so many come together during this event.
