Known as “Florida’s Largest Office Party”, the run is open to employees of businesses, corporations, government agencies, financial institutions and non-profits – regardless of company size – and incorporates a special competition to award the overall men’s, women’s and co-ed teams in 20 different industries. Beginners can “ease into exercise” with friends and gain inspiration and motivation to continue walking and running to improve overall health, while competitive runners have the opportunity to shine amongst their co-workers and lead the corporate team to victory. As part of the tri-county race circuit, a portion of the proceeds from the Fort Lauderdale run will benefit United Way.

Since its inception in 1985, the Mercedes-Benz Corporate Run Series has grown to include more than 33,000 participants and attracts more than 1,200 South Florida companies.

NOTE: Entry fee is $40 per participant. No registrations accepted after March 5, 2015.

Romeo and Juliet is a timeless story about two young people caught up in a rush of emotions who trade in a future of sorrows, leave a neighborhood of quarrels behind in pursuit of training their beautiful minds. Set in Miami at the turn of the 21st Century, the protagonist couple’s choices change their lives, the course of their families – and their city forever! Featuring tango and hip hop choreography, spoken word, graffiti arts, original sound tracks and romantic musical scores – this production will enthrall and inspire young and older audiences to think anew!

Clare Vickery, Director of Grace Arts Center, has teamed up with Janet Erlick of the Fort Lauderdale Children’s Theater to coproduce R&J. Describing their inspiration behind the project, Erlick says, “It’s always wonderful to introduce Shakespeare to young audiences, as the themes and characters still resonate strongly today… this R&J project adapts the story and adds modern influences, music and multiple art forms to make a truly unique theatrical experience. This past summer, FLCT alumni and students began to explore how to combine hip hop, stage combat, tango and street art to highlight the worlds of the Capulets and Montagues, and the upcoming performances will take that foundational work and expand upon it.”

Tickets for the events are available at: romeoandjuliet2015.eventbrite.com, and retail for $15, or $25 for a VIP ticket including a reception, Meet & Greet with the cast following the performance. Workshops surrounding the performances will also be announced on www.gracecafeandgalleries.com.

Voyage to the Orient and to another parallel universe of Dragons, Wizards and Thrones, Oh My…

February 7th 2015 marks the latest fairy tale chapter in the Florida Renaissance Festival storybook revealing six themed weekends until March 15 at Deerfield Beach’s Quiet Waters Park. Where patrons fill storylines as immersive characters experiencing surreal experiences by festival performers and characters.

“Living, breathing theater is what you experience at the Florida Renaissance Festival,” said Bobby Rodriguez, Founder. “Everyday is a new experience, everyday is a passport to a journey complete with fairytale and fantasy.”

New acts in the 2015 festival season- Cast in Bronze will bring the haunting beauty of the carillon to more patrons by demonstrating its versatility with other instruments. The carillons of Cast in Bronze consist of 35 bells each with a total of four tons each.

Cirque du Sewer is the world’s only girl and rat circus performing feats of balance with her impressively trained vermin. The rats jump through flaming hoops, complete obstacle courses, and join Melissa on her slack rope for a death-defying finale.

Fan favorites also return to the festival – While cracking bullwhips, juggling bowling balls or eating fire “Broon” keeps the laughs alive with a dry wit and an extemporaneous style that keeps audiences on the edge of their seats. Craic is a 4-piece earth moving, themed drama using heavy percussions and medieval bagpipes to create a boisterous musical performance. Splatter Time Players are a group of young men who have dedicated their lives to two things: Mud & Entertainment. Flight of the Raptor features the beauty of flight and is designed to educate, enlighten, and sometimes even amaze audiences with a large cast of predator birds including falcons and hawks.

2015 Theme Weekends:

* Swashbucklers & Sirens Weekend- February 7 and 8 – The village is overrun with rogues and scallywags on this Pirate-themed weekend. Can beauty tame the savage scoundrel? Hopefully we will see enough pirate queens and mermaids to find out!

* Time Travelers Weekend- February 14, 15 and 16 – Calling all adventurers from across the millennia! This weekend is for you! Bring our your brassiest Victorian “gears” and join us on “Steampunk Saturday.” On Sunday, no one will keep the Doctors away…be they one of the 12 or Doc Brown himself, the village opens itself up to time travelling pioneers, aliens, Browncoats, Federations and Empires. And don’t miss Cosplay Monday, where anything goes! Anime? Superheroes?

* Wenches Weekend – “Bodacious Bodices” – February 21 and 22 – Pamper your inner bad-girl this weekend, where the ladies are the lords and rule the land. Bold and bawdy, this weekend belongs to the lasses and their ample assets.

* Voyage to the Orient- February 28 and March 1 – This weekend brings us to the Far East! While Europe was experiencing the advent of the Renaissance, rich cultural traditions had been prominent for centuries on the other side of the world. Journey with us to discover the Orient of Marco Polo’s time and experience the sights and sounds of Shogun, Samurai, and the unbroken Ming dynasty that ruled China for almost 300 years.

* Dragons & Wizards and Thrones, Oh My! – March 7 and 8 – One does not simply walk into Mordor, but you can walk directly out of the pages of your favorite books! From the Red Wedding to the Shire, join us as we fill our village with Hobbits, Wizards, Dragons, White Walkers, Fairies and Elves.

* Kilts & Colleens – St Patrick’s Weekend – March 14 and 15 – Celebrate the luck and culture of the Irish, the Scottish and the Celtic traditions of the North Seas! Grab your kilt and get your Celt on! Show your Celtic pride!

The Florida Renaissance Festival is produced by the nationally acclaimed Bobby Rodriguez Productions and strives to create an entertaining and cultural experience for adults and children alike. The sponsors of the Florida Renaissance Festival include Walgreens, Comcast, Warsteiner Beer, Coca-Cola, Broward County Transit and Community Bank.

In a continuous effort to bring to South Florida the most iconic ballets of the Russian repertoire, Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida presents a Tribute to Diaghilev, the art critic, patron, ballet impresario and founder of the Ballets Russes, with three splendid works that translate the spirit of the era.
Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida joins the celebration of the 100th anniversary of Stravinsky’s controversial piece The Rite of Spring, with a new version choreographed by the company’s Artistic Director, Vladimir Issaev and performed by their magnificent dancers. The production utilizes diverse and unique special effects as moving projections by DMD Studios, with costumes decorated by artist Maria Rivas.
The program also includes Le Spectre de la Rose, a beautiful short ballet about a young woman who dreams of dancing with the spirit of a souvenir rose from her first ball, based on a poem by Théophile Gautier. The dances were designed by Michel Fokine and the music is Hector Berlioz’s 1841 orchestration of Carl Maria von Weber’s piano music called “Invitation to the Dance”. Léon Bakst designed the original sets and costumes, which are the basis for Arts Ballet’s designs that have already been recreated at the ateliers of the Mariinsky Theater in Russia.
Finally, the show includes the ballet Petrouchka. Audiences will enjoy this very unique production with music of Stravinsky, costume designs by Jorge Gallardo, and choreography by Issaev himself. The Ballet in one act is set in the middle of a Russian Fair and tells the story of three puppets: Petrouchka, the clown, the Ballerina and, the Moor. All three puppets are commanded by the Charlatan, a sinister, bearded puppeteer and magician, who gives the puppets human emotions.
With this programs Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida will introduce dancers Hirofumi Ikeuchi y Saori Morioka y Takayuki Asai and Lilian Hill performing the leading roles, accompanied by local and international dancers.

L’éléphant dans la Salle- (The Elephant in the Room) is an idiom for an obvious truth that is either being ignored, or otherwise unaddressed. The purpose of this exhibit is to provide a safe place for issues and topics that are normally hidden from public view.

Through visual and performance art, the artists participating in this event will share secrets and taboos, discussing openly to find solutions for our own individual and collective emancipation. Viewers are invited to enter the ‘Confessional’, an interactive safe space installation to share their ‘elephant’.

L’elephant dans La Salle will be hosted by 2 of 1310 Gallery resident artist Niki Lopez (visual artist & designer), and Alana DaCosta, (singer/songwriter).

L’éléphant dans la Salle:

Art + Performance + Community Outreach

Some may chose to never understand it,” says DaCosta. “Yet, we all have the power of choice to free ourselves of whatever makes us uncomfortable.”

“It’s about acknowledging it, owning it, so that it doesn’t define you.” Says Lopez, an artist with her own elephant that will be revealed at the exhibit.

This fundraising network event is the brainchild of Rebecca Ott & Gena Rumble. We recently had the pleasure of meeting Lorna Owens a renowned midwife, nurse, & attorney who created the Footprints Foundation. Owens has spent her life working with and behalf of women, first as a health care provider and then as a legal advocate and firebrand.

“We believe any model designed to help women must include a reduction in maternal and infant mortality, education, entrepreneurship and advocacy.”

The Footprints Foundation is working in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Somaliland, Jamaica, & Florida City to:
-Reduce maternal and infant mortality in low income communities
-Fight teenage pregnancy
-Campaign against female genital mutilation

We hope you make it out to support this great cause, buy some rad jewelry for you and yours, & get to know PI professionals in the greater south Florida area invested in maintaining exceptional ethics.

R3 (Reduce, reuse, recycle) is sometimes called the waste hierarchy, the three components of environmentally responsible consumer behavior.
In the spirit of alchemy, I would like to add to that many more visual RE concepts to exemplify a broader perception of how artists interpret this idea.
After reading Robert Sapolsky’s statement* on the wisdom of the crowd, I was inspired to gather a group of artists whose algorithms consist of reusing, recycling, reforming, etc., materials, ideas, imagery, to create something new or to point us in a new direction.
To post examples, Nestor Arenas REthinks the traditional landscape, Julie Friel an ordinary sketchbook; Jamey Morrill, Pilar Batlle and Lucinda Linderman REuse materials creating sculptural pieces with an ecological message; Dan Walker, Jerry Bleem, Jonathan Rockford, Detourbutterfly, Ryan Farrell, Duane Brant REpurpose other people’s ‘garbage’; Ali Miranda REforms a photograph of Obama; Judy Polstra REwinds time with REclaimed watches; Venessa Monokian and Pip Brant REwork books to create new concepts; MILCHO REarranges an action verb to make you REthink its meaning while Karelle Levy and Martin Casuso do the same with their knitted materials. In another realm, Troy Simmons makes us REflect on the impact we are having on our planet; Randy Burman, Sandra Ramos and Xavier Cortada REview profound concepts of our contemporary society with traditional REused materials. Rosa Naday G. uses REcurrent themes and imagery in her work which include visual expressions of identity, migration, alienation, history, war, and beliefs. Galt Mikesell REunites objects that were separated at transit, along Miami area rail tracks. Ruben Ubiera, Magda Ortiz and Kerry Phillips REclaim use of ordinary supplies with loaded connotation to REgain their worth. These artists, like ants, are working together to sway the general public to REdefine R3.

*-“…a colony of ants makes fantastic sense. Specialized jobs, efficient means of exploiting new food sources, complex underground nests with temperature regulated within a few degrees. And critically, there’s no blueprint or central source of command—each individual ants has algorithms for their behaviors. But this is not wisdom of the crowd, where a bunch of reasonably informed individuals outperform a single expert. The ants aren’t reasonably informed about the big picture. Instead, the behavior algorithms of each ant consist of a few simple rules for interacting with the local environment and local ants. And out of this emerges a highly efficient colony.”

In her 2013 article, “Trayvon Martin, Race, and Anthropology,” Dr. Leith Mullings (President, American Anthropological Association) spoke out, stepped up to, and challenged, conventional wisdom regarding “diversity.”

“Diversity,” wrote Mullings, “has become a threadbare term used… to refer to almost any type of variation… [while] admirable…[diversity, expanded, fails] to address the historical injustices of racial exclusion…[and] obscures the systemic character of racism in the United States.

All forms of discrimination are lamentable, but they are not equal, nor even necessarily comparable, [they]…require different interventions.”

By 2015, our nation will have commemorated several of those key, momentous, interventions targeting extant anti-Black/pro-White racist world-views, laws, systems, beliefs, attitudes, customs, and practices.

To date, Civil Rights laws throughout south Florida, and across our nation, have failed:
(i) To End White Privilege,
(II) To Abolish, what the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. called, the “Disease of Racism,” and
(III) To Close the resulting disparities lived by diverse Black men, women, and children through Euro-centric Educational, Medical, Military and Prison Industrial Complexes.

Even With President Barak Hussein Obama In The White House!

Accordingly, for Dr. Mary Francis Berry (Longtime Former Chairwoman, the United States Commission on Civil Rights), and despite the frenzy over Diversity, Inclusion, and Human Rights, “the crux of the problem today is there is no [Black] civil rights movement…[ because] President Obama is the prize in the minds of most people… at the end of the struggle… [He] was our payoff…” She added, “There will be a [re-vitalized] civil rights movement when Obama is no longer president [and]problems that Black people have remain!”

Inside FACES
curatorial statement
Rochi Llaneza

Most street artists early in the graffiti movement wouldn’t show their faces,
and their visual aesthetics was mainly a font-‐based style. Much has
changed since then, for example, Gregos, a street artist from Paris uses his own face on walls across the world. In general, street art has become a rising creative industry with international influences.
But far from the common objectification we find in some of today’s street
art, this particular group of artists who are mainly street artists, have a
strong connection to these FACES.
The artists in this exhibition cite from iconic historical images as 2alas, to
controversial socio-‐political references used by Claudia Calle, James Brutus
and Evoca1; to the anthropomorphic imagery created by Julie Friel’s
imagination. Dan Walker uses found objects and re-‐uses them as palette to
create portraits of random ‘found’ people. Stefan Von Fouts recycles not only objects but also ideas in order to seduce the viewer to examine commercial fads and appetites. “The gorilla in the room” by Ruben Ubiera is a metaphor for what’s happening with street art today: “post graffism…the art no one wanted to call art, but its now staring right at you”.
With the fast paced world we live in, we sense that life is like a rat-‐race existence where everything is temporary and transient, example, street art on exterior walls. By bringing the message these artists render inside the
walls of an art space, we try to hold the missive a bit longer.

“Sir Charles T. McStuffings” is an original musical written by Playwright, Wendy White and the children residing at the Shepherd’s Way/HOPE South Florida homeless shelter. The musical will be performed by the children, and their “grown-up actor counterparts,” the New Light Players. Original art by the children will be on exhibit and a film produced by film-maker Justin Hearn will be featured, portraying the making of “Sir Charles T. McStuffings”.

“The children are all multi-talented and born to be on the stage!” states Wendy White. “My dream is to help children learn how to express themselves artistically via playwrighting, painting and music, giving them joy and hope to rise above their circumstances.”

“HOPE South Florida is a partnership, a lead organization in a network of partner churches and organizations working together to provide a holistic Christian response to homelessness in our community. The Shepherd’s Way/HOPE South Florida provides shelter and life skill classes to homeless and hurting families throughout Broward County, crossing denominational lines, Protestants and Catholics alike came together, united to serve individuals and families living on the streets.” For more information visit: https://www.hopesouthflorida.org/

The playwright and director, Wendy White has written over 125 one-act plays and is the President and co-Founder of the New Light Foundation, Inc., a 501(c)3 non-profit public foundation dedicated to providing cultural outreach to the community through the arts and education. This is Wendy White’s third theatrical production with the children of the Shepherd’s Way Homeless Shelter. She recently produced her original one-woman show, The Jewish Nun to sold-out audiences in Off-Broadway’s 59e59 Theatre and at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Edinburgh, Scotland. In 2009, the New Light Foundation, Inc. represented the United States as Art Ambassadors by the 1-2-3 Kinderlachen e.V. foundation of Rottenburg, Germany by hosting the international “Global Gallery” project (www.123kinderlachen.org). During the course of this important project, the “world’s biggest canvas” emerged; painted by children – transcending all borders and conflicts.

Wendy White would like to thank Janet Erlick, the Founder and Artistic Director of the Fort Lauderdale Children’s Theatre (FLCT) for her incredible generosity for providing the venue for our performance; the mission at FLCT is to teach the art of life through the magic of theatre. Wendy would also like to thank Vanessa Garcia, Artistic Director of Krane, Inc. for all her support in the process of developing Sir Charles T. McStuffings. In 2010, Garcia, the Founding Artistic Director of Krane, Inc. was named one of Miami’s 20 Under 40 by The Miami Herald for her work in theatre. LOVE, SEX & UN-Spoken Words
Curated and Hosted by Iva Christina McDaniels
Admission: Free & Open to the Public

LOVE, SEX & UN-Spoken Words: Is a celebration of original poetry sung by the sultry songbird, Alana DaCosta and improvised by the erotic movements of Body & Soul Dance Theatre. This explosive journey stimulates the senses from head to toe with passion filling every moment. An open mind and soul are all that’s required for admission, however, be prepared for the emotional rollercoaster that always proves to be worth the ride.

In addition to the performances, enjoy the captioned short film, GAWKIN. This work combines the sophisticated presence of actress Sope Aluko and the sensual swagger of actress Marlaina Law. The women explore their internal fears within their perspective sexuality while contemplating a love connection. Tiptoe down an 8-minute rabbit hole, you may just like what you see. And if you’re cravings still haven’t been satisfied, bask in the larger than life size artwork inspired by self-love, relationships and loving your passion. This production contains explicit material and language. Parental guidance is advised.

Iva McDaniels is a multidisciplinary artist. She graduated from Coral Gables Senior High and holds degrees in Radio & Television Broadcasting, Communications, and Interdisciplinary Arts Education. She is the author of the poetry book MOIST, a playwright, blogger, freelance spiritual and entertainment writer, and filmmaker.

First time ever at Deerfield Beach, the comedy acrobatic sensations known as Kamikaze Fireflies and back due to popular demand, The Duelists, with their dazzling display of comedy and sword fighting brilliance. Labeled as “Don’t Miss” acts in festivals throughout North America, The Limeybirds, combining high-energy antics with sharp wit, banter and their stunning harmonies, and vocal arrangements.

In 2014, Florida Renaissance Festival is unveiling the new interactive Mystery Quest. This quest will immerse audience members as detectives throughout the festival village looking for clues and solving puzzles while interacting with cast performers.

Stache Opens in Ft. Lauderdale with a Visit from the Ardbeg Rocket

Saturday evening marked the opening of Stache, a bar in Ft. Lauderdale with a 1920’s speakeasy theme. The grand opening featured a visit from the Ardbeg Rocket, currently touring to celebrate the launch of some of its Scotch into space back in 2011. We were given the opportunity to sample four different Ardbeg Scotches as well as a few cocktails. The brand’s Consumer Development Manager Trisha Cancilla also made a presentation about the different products.

The bar was full of models dressed like astronauts in addition to all the employees in their 1920’s attire. I got to put on goggles and get a space gun for a studio portrait, too. In the end, my favorite Scotches were the Ardbeg Galileo, finished in Marsala casks, and Ardbeg Uigeadail, finished in Sherry casks.

The bar was beautiful. Two floors with great decorations. Very roomy and comfortable with a big back yard as well. Live music played. Great theme. Bar Stache is located at 109 SW 2nd Avenue, Ft. Lauderdale, FL 33312, just south of Broward Blvd. If you go soon, you may see that the sign hasn’t been updated yet and still reflects the former tenant, Himmie Health Club. That’s the right place though!

This past Sunday night, my fiancé, Naomi and I embarked on a 65 mile bicycle journey along A1A from Parkland to Coral Gables. The propose of the trip: to see if we could do it.

I will preface this by saying that I’ve made October my personal “No Car, No Facebook Month”, also to see if I could do it (more on this in a future post). Naomi was gracious enough to go along with my scheme to bike the entire east coast of Miami-Dade and Broward Counties. We live in the middle of suburban Coral Gables, and regularly bicycle commute as far as Little Haiti, Wynwood, Downtown and Miami Beach, but by no means, had we been training for a long distance ride like this one.

The exhibit opening Saturday October 19, 2013 at 1310 Gallery Sailboat Bend Artist Lofts reflects on the work of daughter and mother. The exhibit, “Tracing the Imaginary” focuses on the artwork of daughter and mother. Both women share a similar trajectory starting their carrier as a raw artist. Sonia Baez-Hernandez after a decade of working in art and sociology got a MFA at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Francisca Hernandez began doing ceramic after retired. In 1998 Hernandez began to develop her drawings and mastering skill.

Hernandez’s drawings transport the audience to imaginary gardens, symbolism, and fragmentation of multiple spaces. In contrast, Baez-Hernandez experiments with a realm of micros organic or anthropomorphic forms that emerge as part of a dialogue between surrealistic overtones, and gestural marking. The exhibition includes two-dimensional pieces, installation art, found –object assemblages, and a performance by Baez-Hernandez. Some of their artworks transform the pitch of illness into artistic expressions and emanate therapeutic value.

Riff Rockit, one of the most popular performers in the growing musical genre “kindie rock” is coming to South Florida for a special concert to benefit the Love Jen Cancer Fund of Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital Foundation. The high energy performance will take place at Revolution LIVE in Fort Lauderdale on Sunday, September 29 at 3 p.m.

Evan Michael, a.k.a. Riff Rockit, headlines the band which entertains kids and their parents with inspiring songs and positive messages. Born and raised in Fort Lauderdale to musical parents, the singer-songwriter’s love of music began at an early age. Evan was clapping to the beat on his first birthday and by age 10 was jamming on a six-string guitar. At age 15 he was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia and underwent intensive chemo treatments at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital. His cancer went into remission. Two years later he relapsed and required a life-saving bone marrow transplant. Music was Evan’s way of coping during this dark and difficult time.

Thanks to the care and treatment Evan received at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, he’s been cancer free since 2001. After this life altering experience, he made a conscious decision to follow his dream. He studied at Boston’s prestigious Berklee College of Music and graduated in 2007. He now lives his passion and tours the country entertaining, inspiring, educating and uplifting children under the alter ego of Riff Rockit.

“Fiber Optics” is a comprehensive group exhibition of 40 emerging artists that exemplify fresh, innovative approaches to “fiber art.” These artists have reinvented traditional craft processes such as embroidery, crochet, knitting, weaving, sewing, and quilting. Rather than follow prescribed methods, they merge traditional craft with sculpture, installation, and video art; and utilize unexpected materials that transcend their banal origins with integral symbolism. Though the approaches are unconventional, technique, precision, and aesthetic appeal are still at the core of their processes.

Artists from South Florida and beyond will occupy an 8000 square foot warehouse and alternative exhibition space, creating new works that hang from the rafters, conform to, and are inspired by the unique site. Installation art, mixed media, Sculpture, Video art, and Interactive works are included.

29 artists were selected through a part juried, part invitational process. The artists are linked by their fresh approaches to the ROUGH & TUMBLE theme: “characterized by violent, random, disorderly action and struggles, unrestrained, marked by bursts of destructive force or intense activity,” and “an unorganized collection or mixture of various things, described as Raw, Textured, Volatile, and/or Arbitrary, Hybrid forms.”

The exhibition is housed within “The Projects North,” in FAT Village ARTS District, the leading exhibition space for monthly art walks in Fort Lauderdale. There will be two public receptions, on Aug. 31 & Sept. 28, as part of the monthly (4th Saturday) art walk in FAT Village, which spans 4 square blocks and is populated with artist’s studios, galleries & other creative businesses. To see images of a few previous exhibits in the space, go to http://www.fatvillageprojects.com/

The closing reception for Rough & Tumble, on Oct. 5, will be part of the 4th Annual ART FALLOUT Event. ART FALLOUT is a collaboration between Girls Club Art Collection, 1310 Gallery, The Museum of Art Fort Lauderdale, FAT Village Arts District, 3rd Avenue artists, and other local venues. There will be a shuttle bus rotating between each of these locations. Multiple venues will host their own new art exhibitions simultaneously for one night, and all events will be FREE, and open to the public. ART FALLOUT venues are unified in the mission to bring greater awareness to the thriving art scene within the downtown Fort Lauderdale area, as well as celebrate the Broward County Cultural Division’s designation of October as “a month for art,” supporting the production and presentation of contemporary art in the local community.

J’ouvert (pronounced “Jou-vay”) is derived from French patois and means ‘daybreak’. Jouvert marks the official start of carnival celebrations. The first revelers hit the streets – jumping, dancing, shouting – abetted, it must be admitted, by the fine local rum, but fueled more by the exhilaration of the occasion. Most revelers usually join sections in which hundreds of people party together with the vibrant sounds of the so-called “engine room” which is comprised of a “core” set of instruments, including the brake iron (discarded car brake drums), shak-shak (shaker), scratcher (a metal guiro), toc-toc (claves), cowbell, and bottle and spoon, drum set, congas, and occasional other instruments as part of the engine room. The brake iron is played with a metal rod to produce a high-pitched sound.

Enter the Miami Rhythm Section in collaboration with the China Mas Group. We are one of a number of Caribbean Carnival Mas bands participating in the Miami-Broward 2013 Jouvert infusion into the cultural consciousness of the South Florida Caribbean Diaspora. Part and parcel of Jouvert is rhythm and steel–The miami Rhythm section represents the so called “engine room” referenced above.

UC|CU Sponsors Free Community Workshops In Dade and Broward On Immigration Basics For Same-Sex Couples

As a result of the Supreme Courts overturning of DOMA (Defense of Marriage Act) which defined marriage being only between a man and a woman, president Obama has directed each Department Secretary and agency head to review all federal regulations in order to determine what benefits will affect, or “attach” to couples in marriage equality states vs. the non-marriage equality states. Some federal benefits attach according to state law. These issues, and many more on marriage, immigration rights and how they affect you, will be discussed in FREE COMMUNITY WORKSHOPS by our panel of Immigration, Law & Psychotherapy Experts in both Dade & Broward counties.

Parallels Art Show

Presented by Niki Art Studio and 1310 Gallery

Gala Opening Reception, July 20th 7pm to 11pm

Look at the world we live in. Our simultaneous existence as a generation binds us together, yet we each diverge on different paths. Our journeys are unique and diverse, yet we co-exist… close in proximity, yet distant, living and transitioning, breathing and traveling together as an expression of the collective self.

The 20 new and emerging artists exhibiting in PARALLELS visualize how they are part of a generation that is free to roam and find one’s own particular destination of infinite possibilities. The artists work makes you pause and observe the beauty in the contrasts that connects and divides us as a community truly unified not only by our similarities yet by our divine right and responsibility to create and evolve differently as individuals. Written by Broward-resident Marvin David Levy, this contemporary American opera transplants a famous Greek tragedy to small New England town in 1865 where betrayal, murder, and incest take center stage. Originally commissioned by the Metropolitan Opera, this work is presented in an all new production by Florida Grand Opera featuring innovative light projections by a top Broadway design team and a stellar cast starring soprano Lauren Flanigan. Not seen on the operatic stage for nearly a decade, Mourning Becomes Electra is the hot ticket of the season. Sung in English with projected translations in English and Spanish.

Bringing a touch of eastern mystique to the stage, Thaïs is a tale of religious eroticism where Athanaël, a cenobite monk, seeks to convert an Alexandrian courtesan and follower of Venus, goddess of love, to the path of Christianity. Making their debuts in the lead role are sopranos Eglise Gutiérrez and Angela Mortellaro. Sung in French with projected translations in English and Spanish.
