Written by Broward-resident Marvin David Levy, this contemporary American opera transplants a famous Greek tragedy to small New England town in 1865 where betrayal, murder, and incest take center stage. Originally commissioned by the Metropolitan Opera, this work is presented in an all new production by Florida Grand Opera featuring innovative light projections by a top Broadway design team and a stellar cast starring soprano Lauren Flanigan. Not seen on the operatic stage for nearly a decade, Mourning Becomes Electra is the hot ticket of the season. Sung in English with projected translations in English and Spanish.

Making their debuts in the lead role are sopranos Eglise Gutiérrez and Angela Mortellaro. Sung in French with projected translations in English and Spanish.

Sonia Delaunay was a Jewish-French artist who, with her husband Robert Delaunay and others, cofounded the Orphism art movement. It is noted for its use of strong colors and geometric shapes. Her work extends to painting, textile design and stage set design. Sonia was the first living female artist to have a retrospective exhibition at the Louvre in 1964. By 1975 she was named an officer of the French Legion of Honor. Her work in modern design included the concepts of geometric abstraction, the integration of furniture, fabrics, wall coverings, and clothing.
Professor M. Kathleen Colussy, M.F.A. has traveled to seventy-one countries on five continents where she has researched and photographed numerous cultures. Colussy’s gift for fashion, textile print design and photography, helped her create a new fine art series of handmade books. This skill contends with the dueling realities of the slick gloss travel brochures along with the sometimes-gritty reality of the indigenous people living and/or working in a given country.

In 1955, Bettie Page (1923-2008) waits to testify before a Senate subcommittee investigating the effects of pornographic material on American adolescents and juveniles. In flashbacks, we see her childhood in Tennessee, a brief marriage, a gang rape, and her going to New York City in 1949. There she takes acting lessons, models for photos, and acts in short films for adults, earning the nickname, “The Pin-Up Queen of the Universe.” We see her relationship with merchants Irving and Paula Klaw, photographers John Willie and Bunny Yeager, boyfriends, and the public. Through it all, she is wholesome, sporting, and forthright – Eve before the fall.

“Human beings have mastered the art of self sabotage now it’s time for us to master the art of self-love”, says co-curator Dana DellaCamera. Imagine a world where you are lit up with excitement because of the miracles you are creating for yourself. Where you allow yourself to dream, trust, develop, risk, expand, take action and create without limitations! When we listen to our hearts and trust our inner selves we experience a burst of energy and discover our true purpose. That is the concept and focus of the show. “On Cloud 9” is an inspirational and innovative journey through art where the soul is realized and takes flight. The show will leave you elevated. Come evolve with us and let your spirit soar!
There will be several featured artists on each of the 3 gallery floor levels. On the first floor, up and coming industrial design innovator, Jeff Olivier will be revealing his newest works. Jeff will be showcasing radical designs that break design rules regarding materials and production. Items will be made by wood, metal, glass, plastic, fiberglass, recycled materials, concrete, and cork. Jeff possesses a minimal, modern, and sleek style with an interesting use of unique materials.
The second floor will feature a variety of artists including Diego Romero, Melisa Caprio, Omnia Masoud, Anne DellaCamera, Eliane Harvey and many more. Caprio was inspired to use photography to help people manifest their desires. Through her own desires being fulfilled she wanted to inspire others to do the same and capture the experience through her art. People from all over the world write their Affirmations on postcards and mail them to her. She then photographs the cards in nature and compiles them to give people the opportunity to see their Affirmation in a published book, Postcards to the UniverseTM. A portion of the proceeds from the book are used to benefit different organizations around the world. At the gallery opening there will be an interactive activity for guests to write their own manifestations and be part of the magic and art.

“New Beginnings” by Wendy White, a Play by the Children, for the Children premieres at ArtServe on Saturday, May 11, 2013 at 8:00 p.m.

New Light Theatre is proud to present “New Beginnings”, an original play written and developed by the children residing at the Shepherds Way/HOPE South Florida homeless shelter. The children will showcase their acting and singing talents, as they remind the audience that art transcends any circumstance.

“New Beginnings” will be performed by the children and will be accompanied by the New Light Players – Jessica Pusceddu, Gema Calero and Gabriel Villasmil. Original art by the children will be on exhibit and a film produced by Anais Dominguez portraying the making of “New Beginnings” will be featured.

Wendy White, President of the New Light Foundation, Inc, directs and produces this labor of love as a result of a dream to help children learn to express themselves via the medium of playwrighting. Wendy has been working year-round at the shelter in the children’s after school program, “ACES” (After-school – Art – Academics- Collaborations for Educational Success), and will ultimately present a documentary which shares the children’s hopes and dreams through their eyes.

“I am deeply honored to help the children who participate in the ACES program and reside at the homeless shelter how to express and share their stories – the program’s goal is to give the children hope by being heard and encouraged through their circumstances – what results is a creative way to have fun and joy through the arts,” states Wendy, also a Playwright and Artist.

Donations are accepted for the children and their families residing at Shepherd’s Way/HOPE South Florida. Tickets are $12 and can be purchased online at: www.newlightgallery.org or over the phone at: 954.829.0638.

Chris and Bob are talented, award-winning artists in their own right and will incorporate drawing/painting demonstrations into their presentation.

In Chris’s latest EVERYONE CAN LEARN TO RIDE A BICYCLE: Learning to ride a bike is one of the most important milestones of childhood, and no one captures the emotional ups and downs of the experience better than Chris Raschka, who won the 2012 Caldecott Medal for A Ball for Daisy. Using very few words and lots of expressive pictures, here is a picture book that not only shows kids how to learn to ride, but captures what it feels like to fall . . . get up . . . fall again . . . and finally “by luck, grace, and determination” ride a bicycle!

Bob Staake’s latest BLUEBIRD: In this emotional picture book, readers will be captivated as they follow the journey of a bluebird as he develops a friendship with a young boy and ultimately risks his life to save the boy from harm. Bob Staake has been working on this book for 10 years, and truly believes he was born to write this story.

This event is brought to us by Random House Unplugs: Random House is committed to helping schools, libraries and bookstores nationwide UNPLUG and Read during Screen Free Week to raise awareness about the importance of balancing screen time against other developmentally important tasks, like reading.

Join us as we welcome Ella Cisneros, a Venezuelan –born major art collector, who runs the Cisneros Fontanels Foundation in Miami.

If anything defines the adventure of twentieth-century art it is its liberation from the pursuit of beauty as an end in itself. It was a moment of change in which art and artists arose as researchers and producers of knowl¬edge, reflection and experience. In this convulsive panorama that shook the very foundations of art, as we can see in Pulses of Abstraction in Latin America, we find some of the most inspiring experiences and ex¬plorations ever to occur in the history of art.

There will be a conversation between Ella Cisneros and Peter Boswell, Museum of Art | Fort Lauderdale Curator at Large.

He is a fifth-generation master weaver who learned the traditional style of ancient weaving, known as Cumbimayocs, from his parents and grandparents – all master weavers from Ayacucho, Peru. While he is ultimately respectful of the iconography and colors of the ancient Huari culture (which predates the Inca culture), it is his juxtaposition of those traditions with his own design elements and narrative that have earned him many international awards, distinctions, and exhibits. Laura is a scholar of textile art and has traveled the world exploring and teaching in his field.

Join us at Riverside Market for the Green Flash Hop Odyssey Black IPA Release. Stop in and meet the Green Flash Rep and hop aboard the Hop Odyssey from 7pm to 9pm. Beer enthusiasts will get a taste of the Black IPA, the first of the series, only at Riverside Market!

Green Flash Black IPA:
This American-style Black IPA is nearly jet black and perceived to have high hop bitterness, flavor and aroma with medium-high alcohol content, balanced with a medium body. The appearance may trick you into thinking you are about to enjoy a traditional stout beer when in fact your senses are about to be overwhelmed with our Black IPA. Juicy, fruity, floral, and pine from Pacific Northwest hops gives the beer a classic West Coast IPA hop character. The Black IPA is further characterized by a balanced and moderate degree of caramel malt and subdued dark roasted malt flavor and aroma. 7.2% ABV, 85
Hops used: Warrior, Citra, Cascade

Third Avenue Art District Annual Art Walk 2/2/13

Third Avenue Art District Annual Art Walk
Saturday, 02/02/2013, 06:00 pm – 10:00 pm
Artwalk-Flyer-and-Map-2013Third Avenue Art District
NE Third Avenue between 2nd and 8th Street,
Fort Lauderdale, Florida FL
Webpage Link

As is the tradition on the first Saturday in February, the Third Avenue artists open their studios at no charge to the public. The next Annual ArtWalk is scheduled for Saturday, February 2, 2013 from 6-10pm.

The studios are located north of Broward Boulevard, on and around NE Third Avenue. There is free street parking along NE Third Avenue and throughout the area. One can walk to several of the studios or hop on the free trolley service. The trolley will circulate between the venues all evening and stop at each one.

If you are looking where to start, there are several options: just come between the four and five hundred block of NE Third Avenue (you can check the map on this site) or start at the museum of art, where there is ample downtown parking and hop on the trolley, or there is a public parking building next to (east of) City Hall on 2nd and 1st Street between 3rd Avenue and Andrews Ave.

There will be twinkle lights and banners and trolley stop signage at all locations. So come join us for a fun evening, meet the artists, talk about their work and about art in general. Maybe even add or start a collection of your own.

Savor Tonight is hosting a wine tasting at d.b.a./cafe, a hip, new addition to the Fort Lauderdale dining scene. This New York style bistro offers an eclectic menu of Euro-centric cuisine created by Executive Chef Steve Zobel, formerly of Triomphe in New York and most recently East End Brasserie. For the wine lover in all of you, you’ll be happy to know that they pride themselves on their unique wine list, and their goal is to entice the customer to try something new.

For this event, guests will enjoy a tasting of 4 wines paired with hors d’oeuvres. Cost is $15 in advance or $20 at the door.

Wines to be served include:

Stock & Stein Spatburgunder (Rose)

As the children read, they may be instructed to pick up an instrument, follow a dance or sing to a melody during a high point of the story, making reading even more engaging and fun.

Catering to underserved communities, the program is offered at no cost. To maximize the learning experience, sessions are limited to 25 children each. One of country music’s giants, George Jones, is bringing his unparalleled voice to The Pavilion at Seminole Casino Coconut Creek on Saturday, February 9 at 8 p.m. Tickets go on sale on Thursday, December 13, 2012.

With a run of songs extending from the 1950s into the 21st century, Jones has had a whopping 143 Top 40 country hits and is frequently referred to as the greatest living country singer. He was a co-writer on his first chart hit, 1955’s “Why Baby Why,” and in the ‘60s recorded hundreds of songs including the number one classics “Tender Years,” “She Thinks I Still Care,” “Walk Through This World With Me” as well as more ephemeral fare like “Love Bug.”

Jones paired up with producer Billy Sherrill in the ‘70s and ‘80s, and their work together exemplified the lusciously string-drenched style known as “country-politan.” In the years that followed, he racked up hit after iconic hit, including “A Good Year for the Roses,” “The Grand Tour,” “I Always Get Lucky With You” and “If Drinkin’ Don’t Kill Me (Her Memory Will).” One 1980s smash in particular, “He Stopped Loving Her Today,” became widely regarded as the greatest country single of all time.

He has received the four highest honors that can be granted to anyone in his line of work, starting with his induction into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1992. A decade later, the president bestowed the National Medal of Arts upon him, and he was saluted by the Kennedy Center Honors in 2008. In early 2012, Jones was presented another top honor as he received the Grammy’s Lifetime Achievement Award.

Approximately 56 years after being named the Most Promising New Country Vocalist of 1956, Jones still lives out that promise with a regular touring routine. Audiences flock to hear the voice that is country’s most indescribable as well as, by acclamation, its finest.

Tickets start at $70* and are available at www.ticketmaster.com. *Additional fees may apply

JAM Active has teamed up with some rad bars in Downtown Ft. Lauderdale to create this awesome day of racing and community enjoyment!

JamActive has partnered with the Little Warrior Project and has decided to donate ALL PROCEEDS made from beer sales. How Signs and other Comedies came to be:

“Can we truly judge a book by its cover? Depending on the Sign can you see a miracle? “Signs” and Other Comedies explore these questions and more,” states the playwright and director Wendy White. “Based on a premise that a picture can say a thousand words, the playwrights were given a prompt of the name of sign and asked to write an entire play based on the sign they chose – resulting in comedic one act plays and monologues reflecting the signs of our times in the most unexpected places.”

The playwright and director, Wendy White has written over 125 one-act plays and was a resident playwright, curator and director at the Kraine Theater in the East Village of New York City from 1984 to 1992, and at the Expanded Arts Theater Company from 1994 to 2001, in the Lower East Side of New York City. Her off-Broadway productions are the base for her new venue at the New Light Theatre. She recently produced her one woman show; The Jewish Nun to sold-out audiences in Off-Broadway’s 59e59 Theatre and at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Edinburgh, Scotland.

Adam White, Gallery owner, Gallery 101 went to see “Who Could Have Predicted” in Miami in May 2011 at Wynwood’s GAB studio and decided to offer Wendy a permanent home in his Fort Lauderdale gallery surrounded by cafes, restaurants, boutiques and other galleries. “Wendy and New Light Theatre will be able to cast plays every month and have a solid home base from which to create. We are very excited to have her here; she is an immense talent that promises to get even bigger and better with this wonderful association” states Adam White, Gallery owner, Gallery 101(www.gallery-101.com).

Wendy White would like to thank the wonderfully talented playwright Vanessa Garcia, Artistic Director of Krane, Inc. for all her support in the process of developing Signs and Other Comedies – In 2010, Garcia, the Founding Artistic Director of Krane, Inc. was named one of Miami’s 20 Under 40 by The Miami Herald for her work in theatre. For more information about Garcia, please visit: www.vanessagarcia.org

The dream team includes the fabulous playwright, Elaine Alonso-Cruz who is joining us with her brand new comedy “Full Speed Ahead!”

In 2009, the New Light Foundation, Inc. represented the United States as Art Ambassadors by the 1-2-3 Kinderlachen e.V. foundation of Rottenburg, Germany by hosting the international “Global Gallery” project (www.123kinderlachen.org). During the course of this important project, the “world’s biggest canvas” emerged; painted by children – transcending all borders and conflicts.

The New Light Foundation, a 501(c)3 non-profit public foundation, has won numerous awards around the globe, has performed everywhere from Amsterdam to Paris; from Miami to Los Angeles to New York City; and has tackled subjects relating to women, love, politics, and Shakespeare. “Hey! Uh-huh!” The Romantics, best known for the unforgettable, high energy track that still bridges generations, “What I Like About You,” will perform free at Seminole Casino Coconut Creek’s Nectar Lounge. The group was inspired by the British punk invasion and nearly 30 years later are still known for creating some of the most influential and beloved rock and roll of all time.

The group’s original members consisted of lead singer and guitarist Wally Palmer, lead guitarist Mike Skill, bass guitarist Rich Cole and drummer and singer Jimmy Marinos. In 1979, The Romantics released their debut LP, anchored by “What I Like About You,” “When I Look In Your Eyes” and a cover of Ray Davies’ “She’s Got Everything.” The band continued to see success during the ‘80s with In Heat, a platinum album bearing two top ten singles, “Talking In Your Sleep” and “One In A Million.” In addition to being a staple on classic and contemporary rock radio, television commercials and movies, The Romantics continue touring and writing songs today.

The Machine, America’s top Pink Floyd show, will bring its stellar performance and intergalactic laser lights to The Pavilion at Seminole Casino Coconut Creek on Friday, January 18 at 8 p.m. Tickets for the concert are on sale now.

The Machine has forged a 20 year reputation of excellence, extending the legacy of Pink Floyd, while creating another legacy all their own. The talented musicians that make up The Machine include founding members Joe Pascarell (guitar, vocals) and Tahrah Cohen (drums), as well as longtime stage mates Ryan Ball (bass, vocals) and Scott Chasolen (keys, vocals).

The New York based band focuses on making every show an authentic Floydian experience for their fans. Known for performing a diverse mix of The Floyd’s extensive 16-album repertoire, complete with faithful renditions of popular hits as well as obscure gems, The Machine’s stellar musicianship, dramatic lighting and video, and their passionate delivery sets them above and beyond the rest.

In the classic tradition, The Machine explores collective improvisation paralleling and even rivaling that of an early 1970s Pink Floyd mentality. Their use of expanded theatrical elements and elaborate stage displays continues in the spirit of the later Floyd lineups of the 1980s. The band is also known for recreating entire albums as a part of their show, accepting requests from fans, and for taking an A to Z approach in which one song is played for every letter of the alphabet. Additionally, the quartet has been sharing the stage with full symphony orchestras, including the Atlanta, Detroit, Pittsburgh and San Diego Symphonies.

Over the years, The Machine has touched the hearts and souls of many, selling out theaters, large clubs and casinos across North and Central America, Europe and Asia. They have also appeared at renowned music festivals such as Bonnaroo, Riverbend, Gathering of the Vibes, Buffalo’s Artpark and Germany’s Rock of Ages.

Tickets start at $15* and are available at www.ticketmaster.com. *Additional fees may apply

Rick Springfield, best known for the ‘80s smash “Jessie’s Girl” and a total of 17 top-40 hits, will perform his high energy show at The Pavilion at Seminole Casino Coconut Creek on Friday, January 11 at 8 p.m. Tickets for the show are on sale now, with general admission standing-room only.

A singer turned soap opera star turned singer, Springfield was born in Australia and moved a great deal with his military family throughout Australia and the United States. In 1968, he joined the band Zoot, which became one of the most popular groups in Australia. He later went solo in 1971 and garnered his first U.S. success the following year with a recording of “Speak to the Sky.” The song reached number 14 in the U.S.

In between album recordings, Springfield began acting on General Hospital. His popularity skyrocketed, setting the stage for the release of Working Class Dog in 1981. Powered by the classic single “Jessie’s Girl,” which eventually hit the top of the charts, and the Top Ten follow-up “I’ve Done Everything for You,” Working Class Dog was a smash success. Springfield was awarded a Grammy for Best Male Rock Vocal for “Jessie’s Girl.” Springfield eventually returned to his first love of music when concerts conflicted with his television career.

The follow-up album, Success Hasn’t Spoiled Me Yet, was released in 1982, spawning the Top Ten smash “Don’t Talk to Strangers.” In 1983, he released Living in Oz, which also went platinum with the Top Ten “Affair of the Heart” and “Human Touch.”

Springfield made the leap to the big screen in 1984 with Hard to Hold, and the soundtrack spawned his Top Ten hit “Love Somebody.” He has continued to record albums from the ‘80s through the present. His latest album, released in 2012, is titled Songs for the End of the World. With more than 25 million albums sold and 17 top 40 hits, Springfield continues to perform for fans worldwide.

Just one week after Veteran’s Day was observed across the nation, Seminole Casino Coconut Creek is proud to unveil special designated parking areas for Disabled American Veterans (DAV) on Monday, November 19 at 10 a.m. The covered parking spaces will be located on the third level of the new environmentally friendly garage featuring solar energy and green technology.

The ceremony will include several special guest speakers, including Broward County Commissioner Chip LaMarca, DAV of Vietnam and former Commander Chapter 133 Chuck McLaughlin, as well as the man whose life inspired the best-selling book and Academy Award-winning film “Black Hawk Down,” Michael Durant. Following the heartfelt presentation, the award-winning Fresh Harvest will provide a mouthwatering and nutritious meal to numerous invited veterans in gratitude of their patriotism and service.

Durant served in the United States Army 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment Airborne, known as the “Night Stalkers,” and was the pilot of a Black Hawk helicopter that was fired upon and subsequently crashed during a combat operation in Somalia in 1993. After a street battle, he was captured and held prisoner for 11 days and was badly injured. The events were recounted in Mark Bowden’s book “Black Hawk Down” and Ridley Scott’s movie of the same name. Durant has since turned his experiences into a powerful story of survival and inspiration for all as a renowned speaker and New York Times best-selling author of “In the Company of Heroes” and “The Night Stalkers.”

“Seminole Casino Coconut Creek is committed to supporting and giving back to those who have served our country,” said Steve Bonner, President of Seminole Casino Coconut Creek. “There are many veterans in our community, and we are proud to dedicate these special parking spaces solely to them in honor of their service.”

The 1.2 million-member DAV is a non-profit 501(c)(4) charity dedicated to building better lives for America’s disabled veterans and their families. The DAV was founded in 1920 by disabled veterans returning from World War I to represent their unique interests. The DAV’s Voluntary Services Program operates a comprehensive network of volunteers who provide veterans free rides to and from medical facilities and improve care and morale for sick and disabled veterans.

DAV members provide grassroots advocacy and services in communities nationwide. From educating lawmakers and the public about important issues, to supporting services and legislation to help disabled veterans, the DAV is there to promote its message of hope to all who have served and sacrificed.

Join the “celebration” and ring in 2013 with Kool and the Gang at The Pavilion at Seminole Casino Coconut Creek on Thursday, December 31 starting at 10:30 p.m. The beloved band will be playing all of South Florida fans favorites throughout the night, up until the ball drops at midnight.

Comprised of Khalis Bayyan and his brother Robert “Kool” Bell joined by Robert “Spike” Mickens, Dennis “Dee Tee” Thomas, Ricky Westfield, George Brown and Charles Smith, Kool and the Gang created a unique musical blend of jazz, soul and funk. The group solidified their musical chemistry early on by supporting acts like Bill Cosby, Ritchie Havens and Richard Pryor.

Their self-titled 1969 debut album introduced their signature instrumental sound and fierce horn arrangements, spawning their first Billboard R&B charted single, “Kool and the Gang,” and later “Let the Music Take Your Mind.” Their audacious sophomore set Live at the Sex Machine peaked at number six on Billboard’s R&B chart and yielded three hit singles, “Funky Man,” “Who’s Gonna Take the Weight” and “I Want to Take You Higher.”

The band’s stellar reputation grew with each album, and 1973’s gold disc Wild & Peaceful took Kool and the Gang to another level, spurring the immortal party anthems “Funky Stuff,” “Hollywood Swinging” and the platinum smash “Jungle Boogie.” Kool and the Gang saw continued success with the smashes “Open Sesame,” “Get Down On It,” “Take My Heart,” “Let’s Go Dancing,” “Cherish,” and “Fresh,” all helping to solidify the groups’ international stardom.

Kool and the Gang has sold over 70 million albums worldwide and influenced the music of three generations. The group has earned two Grammy Awards, seven American Music Awards, 25 Top Ten R&B hits, nine Top Ten Pop hits and 31 gold and platinum albums to date.

Three Dog Night, one of the most successful American bands of the ‘60s and ‘70s, will bring “joy to the world” on Saturday, January 5, 2013 at 8 p.m. at The Pavilion at Seminole Casino Coconut Creek.

Founding members and vocalists Cory Wells and Danny Hutton, original keyboardist Jimmy Greenspoon and guitarist Michael Allsup, as well as bassist Paul Kingery and drummer Pat Bautz will perform their beloved hits, plus some amazing new songs, sure to be enjoyed by South Florida Fans of all ages.

With their distinctive and sometimes extraordinary harmonic blend, the group became a sensation and their hits appeared on best-selling charts in multiple genres, including pop, rock and country. Boasting chart and sales records that are virtually unmatched in popular music, Three Dog Night had an impressive 21 consecutive Billboard Top 40 hits, including three number one singles, “Mama Told Me (Not to Come),” which was also a Top 10 hit in the United Kingdom, “Joy to the World,” and “Black and White.” Coincidentally, each one featured a different lead singer.

Three Dog Nights’ version of John Lennon and Paul McCartney’s ‘’It’s For You’’ typified the band at their best, but it was their original arrangements of the work of lesser-known writers that brought welcome exposure and considerable royalties to fresh talent. The group recorded the music of the best new songwriters of their time, including Harry Nilsson (“One”), Randy Newman (“Mama Told Me (Not to Come)”), Elton John (“Lady Samantha” and “Your Song”), Laura Nyro (“Eli’s Coming”), Paul Williams (“An Old Fashioned Love Song”) and Hoyt Axton (“Joy to the World”) among many others. The band was noted for its creative arrangements and interpretations, and their cover choices gave exposure to several of these talented songwriters.

As they mark more than 40 years of extraordinary music and touring on the road, Three Dog Nights’ records continue to sell around the world, reaching beyond the borders of the U.S. into Japan, Canada, Holland, England, Germany, Spain and more.

Tickets start at $40* and are available at www.ticketmaster.com. *Additional fees may apply

Just in time for the holidays, one of America’s most endearing and enduring stars, Tony Orlando, is coming to town! The star will dazzle South Florida with his “Great American Christmas Show” at The Pavilion at Seminole Casino Coconut Creek on Saturday, December 22 at 8 p.m. The festive show is a classic filled with the joy and music of the season along with some of his greatest hits that has been running for 19 years in both Las Vegas and Orlando’s hometown of Branson, Missouri.

Orlando has a unique ability to move and excite an audience unlike any other, and became a teenage idol at the age of 16 with his first hit, “Halfway to Paradise” in 1961. Soon after he became a music publisher for Clive Davis at April-Blackwood Music, where he signed popular songwriters such as James Taylor. His career continued to expand when he lent his voice to a demo record for the song titled “Candida” that became wildly popular and climbed the charts all the way to number one.

Following this success, he recorded the mega sensation “Knock Three Times” which not only became number one, but was the top song of 1971 selling over six million copies worldwide, and was featured in the hit movie Now and Then. Three additional number one hits soon followed, “Tie A Yellow Ribbon ‘Round The Ole Oak Tree,” “My Sweet Gypsy Rose” and “He Don’t Love You (Like I Love You).”

Deciding to jump full force into what was already a meteoric rise to the top, Orlando released a string of even more successful songs, including “Who’s in the Strawberry Patch with Sally,” “Cupid,” “Steppin’ Out-I’m Gonna Boogie Tonight” and “Mornin’ Beautiful.” To date, he has sold millions of records across the globe and remains one of America’s most beloved personalities.

Over the years, he has been a recipient of three American Music Awards, a People’s Choice Award and was one of the first entertainers to be featured as a subject of VH1’s Behind the Music in 1998. He was also awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1990 for his outstanding achievements in the entertainment industry.

In 1966, the Beatles stopped touring. Of course, they kept making records. Really great records. They just never performed them live.

The Fab Faux picks up where the Beatles left off as live performers. The Beatles tribute–heralded as the best in the world by everyone from Rolling Stone to Paul McCartney–performs the Beatles’ latter records as faithfully to the recordings as possible. They leave the wigs at home.

The group is led by Jimmy Vivino of Conan O’Brien’s band and Will Lee of David Letterman’s. Lee is a Grammy winner and has performed with three of the Beatles. The Fab Faux is five piece–a necessity for performing the Beatles’ complex masterpieces–and brings a horn section and a string section to round it out.

It’s been a year and a half since the Fab Faux’s last visit to south Florida. In that time, their live appearances have only generated more buzz. In Los Angeles last year, Gary Oldman made a surprise appearance and introduced the band, while Bill Mayer, Bill Bob Thornton, Jeff Bridges and many more famous Beatles lovers looked on.

At their Parker Playhouse concert, the Fab Faux will perform Magical Mystery Tour in its entirety, followed by a second set of selections from other albums. The Fab Faux is the one band any Beatles fan must see. http://www.thefabfaux.com/

Girls’ Club presents Following the Line, featuring works by thirty international artists using hand-drawn line as the primary unit of expression. Curated by Miami gallerist Carol Jazzar, the works in Following the Line are created in many mediums, including graphite, ink, colored pencil, layered mylar, etching, aquatint, lithography and hand-drawn animation.

Manifesting the close connection to the artist’s hand and thought, drawings have historically been defined as intimate. Some are smaller in scale. Some are conceived as preparatory to final works in other media. Drawings may commit fleeting, ephemeral concepts to paper, itself a less permanent support. The persistent vitality of drawing today, developing alongside high tech digital and moving image media, will be emphasized. Linear works that owe their inspiration to drawing will craft an “expanded” definition of drawing in use today.

A catalog designed by Augusto Mendoza will accompany the exhibition and includes essays by curator Carol Jazzar, independent curator and writer Sue Spaid, and poetry by Denise Duhamel.

A year-long schedule of artist talks, workshops and film screenings invite the public to share Girls’ Club’s investigation of drawing in contemporary art. For details of events visit: http://girlsclubcollection.org/events.

One of the world’s most powerful sports figures, former heavyweight boxing champion Mike Tyson, will bring his popular Broadway show, MIKE TYSON: UNDISPUTED TRUTH, to The Pavilion at Seminole Casino Coconut Creek on Saturday, November 10 at 9 p.m. This will be the only performance in Florida, giving fans a special chance to see the show and learn more about the star.

MIKE TYSON: UNDISPUTED TRUTH is a rare, personal look inside the life and mind of one of the most complicated men ever to wear the heavyweight belt. Directed by Academy Award nominee Spike Lee, this riveting one man show goes beyond the headlines, behind the scenes and between the lines to deliver a must-see theatrical knockout.

For nearly three decades, Tyson has been a legend both in and out of the ring. Tenacious, talented and thrilling to watch, Tyson embodies the wit and flair of a truly larger-than-life personality. With nicknames like “Iron Mike,” “Kid Dynamite,” and “The Baddest Man on the Planet,” it’s no surprise that Tyson was once the most feared fighter in all of boxing. He won his first 19 professional bouts by knockout, 12 of them in the first round, and one look at the long list of his victories and accomplishments is all that it takes to see that Tyson is one of boxing’s all-time greats.

While most fans know that he was once the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world, few realize that before Tyson, no boxer had ever won the three biggest belts in prizefighting – the World Boxing Council, World Boxing Association and International Boxing Federation world heavyweight titles. He holds the record as the youngest boxer to achieve that feat at the age of 20, and none, besides Tyson, have ever owned them simultaneously.

Throughout his career, Tyson became well known for his fierce and daunting boxing style. He was ranked No. 16 on Ring Magazine’s list of “100 Greatest Punchers of All Time” and No. 1 in the ESPN.com list of “The Hardest Hitters in Heavyweight History.” He has also been inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame as well as the World Boxing Hall of Fame.

Seminole Casino Coconut Creek is offering the chance to “feel the noize” and see the rock and roll phenomenon Quiet Riot at Nectar Lounge FREE on Saturday, October 20 at 9 p.m. The Los Angeles quartet became an overnight sensation thanks to their monster 1983 smash album Metal Health.

The American heavy metal band, best known for their hit singles “Metal Health” and “Cum On Feel the Noize,” was founded in 1973 by guitarist Randy Rhoads and bassist Kelly Garni. The original line-up featured Rhoads and Garni with lead vocalist Kevin DuBrow and drummer Drew Forsyth. Their current lineup consists of lead vocalist Scott Vokoun, drummer Frankie Banali, bassist Chuck Wright and guitarist Alex Grossi. Quiet Riot began by regularly opening for Van Halen in several local clubs, before either act had a record deal, and the co-influence can be heard between Randy Rhoads and Eddie Van Halen.

Metal Health’s title track had been released as the album’s first single and reached No. 31 on the charts. The song’s success could be attributed to its appearance in the 1984 movie Footloose, as well as its popularity as a heavily-rotated video on MTV. The album stormed up the U.S. charts, duly reaching the number one spot and going platinum five times over in the process at that time.

In 1983, Quiet Riot’s second single “Cum On Feel the Noize” was released. A cover of the 1973 hit by Slade, the single spent two weeks at No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and was the first heavy metal song to make the top five on that chart. The success of the single helped carry the album Metal Health to the top of the Billboard album chart, making it the first American heavy metal debut album to ever reach No. 1 in the U.S. To date, the sales of Metal Health have exceeded the 10 million mark worldwide.

Quiet Riot returned to the studio to record 1984’s Condition Critical, which went on to sell over 2 million copies in the U.S. and included another chart-ready Slade cover in “Mama Weer All Crazee Now” and the self-penned “Party All Night.” The group has since gone on to release several successful albums and tour worldwide, and has been ranked on VH1’s “100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock.”

Total Wine and More–Not Just a Liquor Store

Pretty Poetic Title. Am I right?

Everyone in South Florida knows that Total Wine & More is a great place to shop for Beer, Spirits and Wine. I’d have preferred they called it Total Beer and More, but that’s just me. The variety of products, great prices, regular tastings and knowledgeable, friendly staff are just the beginning, too.

Total Wine offers regular educational opportunities for their customers as well. You know, the fun kind of education. Not geometry and grammar, though those are two of my interests. But I’ll save that for another time. Yes, Total Wine offers beer classes, wine tastings with the actual wine makers, whiskey classes with specialists in the business and everything in between. Got a Tequila fetish? This is your store!

For a nominal fee, usually between $15 and $25, consumers can attend one of these events. They are conveniently scheduled, regular events, too, and often they are happening at multiple locations simultaneously so you have your choice. I’ve personally been to a few of their classes. First, Whiskeys Around the World presented by a Senior Master of Whiskey and more recently one called Bourbon Essentials, in addition to a few beer events which I just assumed you knew. I learned a lot. They were very interesting, fun, nice to meet other people, enjoyable experiences. We were able to sample a variety of products, selected for quality and value, and even get some coupons to use afterward.

My wife and a friend just signed up for a Wine Class called Malbec and Other Sexy Wines of South America. And I heard the store manager just yesterday talking about Single Malt Scotch and Tequila classes coming up soon. With 9 local South Florida stores, you will surely have no problem finding something that interests you too. Pick a store and check out their calendar.

I recently asked Greg Tuttle, Total Wine’s Product Education Manager, based out of their Corporate office in Potomac, MD, a few questions. If you have your own questions, Greg is on Twitter, and he or his staff will be happy to get you some answers about their educational series. Plus he’s pretty cool. You might even bump into him one day. For real, I did. And don’t think I’m being a dick with my questions. I just wanted to play Devil’s Advocate and get the real scoop.

Total Wine's Greg Tuttle and Rob Hill

Me: Why go to the trouble of organizing educational classes for your customers? It seems like a lot of work for not a lot of money. Are you just trying to get a few more customers into your store?

Greg: We believe that knowledgeable customers are the best customers. At Total Wine & More, with our wide selection of wines, beers, and spirits, we have an opportunity to engage with customers in educational environments where we can share some of the breadth of our product portfolio. Customers can taste and learn in a relaxed atmosphere, and expose their palates to products and flavors they may never have otherwise tried.

Me: How do you make sure your presenters are ready for an enthusiastic and well-versed audience? What type of training do you make sure your employees or guest presenters have beforehand? How do you ensure they are qualified?

Greg: Indeed our audiences are enthusiastic, but their level of knowledge spans the spectrum from beginner to expert. Thus, we tailor the classes down the middle, so there is something for everybody including tasting a new product they’ve never tasted before, and/or learning something new about wine, beer or spirits that they did not previously know. Our area vice presidents and district managers select the class presenters for each store based on the presenters’ exhibiting core subject matter knowledge and presentation skills.

This is where I tried to zing him, LOL: How do you select the products that will be tasted? Do you just pick a handful of beers that are average and not selling well?

Greg: For beer classes, we first determine a set of class themes for the year, aiming to cover a wide spectrum of customers interests and previous beer knowledge, and then within each theme certain beer styles are selected to match that theme. Beer selections are challenging because availability of beer differs from one state to the next and from one market to another within the state. Typically, class presenters are given a list of beers for each beer style covered from which they can chose what to feature in their class based on availability in their store. They are also allowed to feature locally produced beers that may not be on the list.

Me: Is there anything else about Total Wine’s educational series that you think is very important or interesting?

Greg: Our product education series is constantly expanding and evolving. New classes are introduced each year, while prior favorites are updated and included in the roster. A person who attends each class offered, be it wine, beer, or spirits, will in a year’s time be exposed to an incredibly wide sampling of the varietals and styles available to him/her.

Me (trying for the Krabby Patty Formula): Are there any secret surprises we can look forward to in S. Florida in the coming months?

Greg: No “secrets” up our sleeves right now, but I suggest your readers follow our Twitter accounts (@TWMBeer and @Totalwine) and on Facebook for updates.
