March 4 Hunger 5k Walk/Run for Feeding South 3/12/11

Feeding South Florida’s inaugural march 4 hunger 5k walk/run to raise funds to fight hunger & feed hope in the local community
Saturday, March 12 from 7:30-10:30 a.m
Hollywood Boardwalk

March 12 Event to Feature Military Theme in the Ongoing Fight Against Hunger

Representatives of Feeding South Florida™ (formerly Daily Bread Food Bank) are encouraging South Floridians to help “wage a war” to fight hunger during the organization’s March 4 Hunger. The 5K Walk/Run along the acclaimed Hollywood Boardwalk, touted as one of the best boardwalks in the U.S., and beach area in Hollywood, Fla., will take place on Saturday, March 12 from 7:30-10:30 a.m. The Walk/Run will mirror the military theme concept of Feeding South Florida’s April 2010 renaming/grand opening event which emphasized the ongoing fight against hunger.

This fun and healthy communityevent will give attendees the chance to “run miles for meals” to help alleviate hunger for the more than 1 million residents of Broward, Miami-Dade, Monroe and Palm Beach Counties. For every dollar raised, Feeding South Florida can provide for nine pounds of food and grocery items. Registration for the event is $25 in advance and $35 the day of the race. To register, visit www.splitsecondtiming.com.

Corporate sponsorships are also available. The generosity of corporate sponsors keeps program fees at accessible levels for all participants, and will cover every aspect of the event from racing and timing equipment to providing a safe and aesthetically pleasing venue for runners. All donations are tax deductible.

Sponsorships ranging from $2,500 to $30,000 are available. Another way to contribute to the event is productsponsorships, in which corporations may purchase or provide gates, bibs, timing tags, food, tables, chairs, video, radio equipment, silent auction items, etc.

Current event sponsors are City of Hollywood, Republic Services, Inc., Whole Foods Aventura, America TeVe, Teva Pharmaceutical Industries, Ltd., The Nerdel Company, Elite Island Resorts and 5 Hour Energy.

Businesses interested in becoming a sponsor of the inaugural March for Hunger should contact Anthea Pennant, Feeding South Florida director of development at (786) 229-7581 or apennant@feedingsouthflorida.org.

“We are very excited about this inaugural event,” said Judith Gatti, executive director of Feeding South Florida. “In line with our ‘Fighting Hunger, Feeding Hope’ campaign, we hope to raise funds for the many South Floridians facing food insecurity, as well as ensure that event participants enjoy this event.”

March 5 – April 10, 2011

Also Opening March 4th Louise Erhard: Yes, No, and Everything in Between
March 5 – April 10, 2011
Louise Erhard’s work explores the dynamics of her interpersonal relationships and the ways her ego and misperceptions have affected those relationships in the past. Her creation of space and place is executed through collage. Beginning with a clean board, Erhard layers mixed media from everyday publications — cut and pasted from posed advertising imagery and the discarded decorative elements from our collective pasts. Her use and manipulation of common imagery of architectural elements is intended to create visual representations of the everyday struggle with one’s ego and the desire to rise above it.

March 5 – April 10, 2011
A Little Love is an installation piece by artist Birds are Nice featuring an animated video short, and sound and installation.

The dinner and Celebrity Golf Classic continues to draw some of the biggest names in sport and entertainment. We bring the community together for two of the year’s most exciting and enjoyable social events in support of two great causes that will ultimately benefit our kids in the community and throughout the region. We are proud to be celebrating the achievements of our 2011 honorees and thank all our sponsors and patrons for their continued support.”

“We are very much looking forward to this year’s event which proves to be a highlight of the social season,” says Lauren Book, founder of Lauren’s Kids Foundation. “Eric and Tony have been phenomenal in helping to raise awareness for our cause and we thank everyone involved in helping make the event such a success. This tremendous awareness will help shine a spotlight on Lauren’s Kids Foundation and Dade Schools Athletic Foundation. The ultimate goal for our organization is to raise funds for the creation of a Crisis Center for Children and their families who are coping with the aftermath of sexual abuse. The Dog Beach of Hollywood, FL

The Dog Beach of Hollywood, FL
Between Pershing and Custer Streets on the Ocean
www.dboh.org

The emotions I felt when I took my little angel to the dog beach in Hollywood, FL for the first time were overwhelming. Boundi and the other dogs ran, swam, played fetch, chased each other, and generally had the time of their lives, all free from leash restraint.

The friendly dogs and people who shared the experience with us on this fall day smiled and laughed as we talked about our pets and threw tennis balls deep into the Atlantic. Everyone cleaned up after their pet(s) and our dog even cleaned up after some ungrateful beach goer, who had littered a plastic bag in the ocean. Ever the loyal retriever, Boundi brought the bag to our feet and we properly disposed of it.

I like very much that they have a public official or park officer of some kind there on the sand to ensure everyone’s safety, though he wasn’t utilized during my visit.

For Miami Dade dog lovers who have visited the “dog beach” on Key Biscayne: DON’T! Don’t ever go there again. I know we won’t. Even though it’s a bit of a drive to the Hollywood beach, the experience is more than worth it and the beach doesn’t even compare to the dirty area on the causeway where they allow dogs in Miami.
Bottom Line: This gorgeous beach is amazing just for human recreation, and allowing furry friends to share in the fun takes it to another fantastic level!

Hollywood Beach Marriott

Hollywood, FL 33019

Hollywood Chamber of Commerce Presents Grapes for Grades
A Wine Tasting & Fundraising Event Benefiting the Hollywood Florida Scholarship Foundation

Join the Greater Hollywood Chamber of Commerce for the ultimate grape experience served with a side dish of Hollywood – Grapes for Grades. The fundraising event, now in its 8th year, will take place on Friday, September 24th from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at the Hollywood Beach Marriott (2501 N. Ocean Drive in Hollywood). This upscale evening includes wine tasting, gourmet food, live jazz music, a silent auction and a raffle drawing for a seven night Caribbean cruise for two.

A portion of the proceeds from Grapes benefit the Hollywood Florida Scholarship Foundation (HFSF), a 501(c)3 organization which provides college scholarships to deserving high school seniors from local Hollywood high schools. www.hollywoodchamber.org/grapes

“[The Hollywood Florida Scholarship Foundation] scholarship has been a great help in paying for my first two years at the University of Florida, and it will aid me in my finances as I enter in the [school’s] nursing program,” says UF student Karolina Dominguez.

In addition, scholars have the opportunity to continue receiving scholarship dollars all through their college tenure as long as they maintain the required GPA and if there is still a need for financial aid. In the past seven years, Grapes for Grades has raised over $170,000 dollars for the foundation and has funded approximately 198 students.

“I am a student at Florida Atlantic University, and my major is biology. By the time I finish my education, I plan on opening my own dental practice. The generosity and encouragement from the Chamber and the HFSF motivate me to keep on going until I reach my goal,” adds FAU student Aunie Danyalian.

Grapes guests will enjoy delectable bites and a notable collection of wines and spirits from participating restaurants and vendors such as:
• Gino’s Italian American Deli & Meat Market
• French Quarter at Mardi Gras Casino
• Dave & Buster’s of Hollywood
• Taboulli
• Over the Top Catering
• Liguori’s Fired
• Latitudes at the H.B. Marriott
• Nilus Delights Bakery
• Edible Arrangements
• Fresh and Tastee Catering
• Sport Zone 84
• The Greek Joint
• Hollywood Discount Liquor & Wine
• Russian Standard Vodka

The evening will culminate with the announcement of the winner of the six-star, luxury, seven night Caribbean cruise for two on the award-winning Regent Seven Seas Mariner. This mid-size ship with maximum capacity of 700 guests, takes guests on a picturesque voyage through the Caribbean with stops in Cozumel, Belize, Guatemala and Costa Maya. The winner will receive an all-inclusive cruise with gratuities included, complimentary 24 hour room service, all meals and much more! The cruise getaway is valued at $8,400, but raffle tickets are only $100! The ultimate way to cruise the Caribbean . . . bon voyage!

“The $100 we spent on the raffle ticket was the best $100 we’ve ever spent,” says Dori Lynn Neuwirth of Atlantic Sands, 2005 Oceania cruise winner.

“A $13,000 first-class Mediterranean cruise – with a balcony view no less – for the price of a nice dinner out. You can’t beat that! If we hadn’t won, we still would have been happy to donate the money to such a worthy cause. We plan to buy a couple more tickets this year,” Neuwrith adds.

The evening’s featured entertainment will be Diva Joan Cartwright and the Jazz Hotline.

This event is brought to you by the following sponsors and supporters: Hollywood Police Department; E.H. Whitson Air Conditioning, Electrical & Plumbing; Cohen & Owens, PA; Hollywood Discount Liquor & Wine; Florida Power & Light; SUN Credit Union; Calvin Giordano & Associates, Inc.; Hollywood Beach Golf Resort; Community Bank of Broward; The Press Room and Ace Color Printing.

Support the cause and become a sponsor! Sponsorship opportunities are available. Sient auction donations and financial contributions will also be accepted.

Tickets are $60 pre-event and $70 at the door. Purchase our Wine & Dine Deal for only $200, which includes two event tickets and one raffle ticket.

Event tickets can be purchased at the Greater Hollywood Chamber of Commerce (330 N. Federal Highway), SUN Credit Union (4205 Hollywood Blvd. in Hollywood) or online at www.hollywoodchamber.org.

Premiering in South Florida, ‘Temptation’ introduces European-inspired cabaret with modern twist in a provocative and interactive performance at Passion Nightclub in the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino. Executive Producer Dean Kronacher brings the classic art of Cabaret to meet the nightlife experience. Each performance is a synthesis of dance styles from around the world, with a central theme and storyline. Temptation draws the audience into each scene through continuous invigorating music and performers acting out scenes prefaced by anecdotes spoken in first person directly to the audience by the cabaret’s MC.

“As South Florida’s cultural scene continues to flourish the need for upscale performance art is more and more evident. I am proud to have been a part of the conception of Temptation Cabaret” – Executive Producer Dean Kronacher

Temptation’s seductive series of dance vignettes are strung together by the MC’s theatrical introduction to each act, which includes allusions to past trysts with each of the seven dancers and aerialist. The artfully choreographed set of performances evokes passion that overflows throughout the audience. Each scene displays Temptation’s own concoction of modern and traditional dance set to popular music both old and new.

Temptation also features two enthralling routines by the remarkably gifted aerialist who contorts herself mid-air supported only by two satin oversized ribbons. The graceful demonstration of aerial acrobatics set amidst smoke screens is utterly mesmerizing. From beginning to end this extraordinary performance is poised to delight a diversity of spectators, males and females alike.

Photographs of Temptation Cabaret at Passion Nightclub at Hard Rock on 4/24/10

Temptation Cabaret at Passion Nightclub at Seminole Hard Rock on Saturday, April 24, 2010.  Temptation brings modern french-style cabaret to the South Florida stage, renowned choreographer Kalyn James, producer Rico James, executive producer Dean Kronacher and professional trained dancers from around the world.

The show awesome, when it was over, I still wanted to see more.  The choreography was great and the dancers where fantastic  and the staff was awesome.  They used  several different style of music from the classic cabaret to modern music.  It was so worth the trip up to the Seminole Hard Rock and I would go see it again.

{Additional comments from James: I have to say, this program was surprisingly good. Being at a casino in Hollywood, we did not really know what to expect. However, the show is excellent.The choreography is interesting and creative, as well as being much broader than one might anticipate. Many current cabaret shows are either just kind of classic in format or completely cheesy and over the top. The choreography here combined classic elements with modern styles. It is extremely sexy without being overtly tawdry.The dancers are stunning. Real beautiful girls, not the kind of plastic, ghetto-style that you see in some of these shows. Their skill and panache in the numbers shows a real dedication to the show. Combining the dance numbers with narration and tying it together with a loose storyline really takes it to the next level.This is not the kind of show you see in one of the over-the-top clubs, nor is it the kind of semi-amateur show you see at various events around town. Though they do not have the massive budget of the Vegas shows, the creativity and skill in this show could stand beside those. This is definitely the kind of show we need more of in south Florida.It may sound like I am overplaying this description, but honestly, we were very, very surprised by the quality of the show. The photos here do not begin to properly represent what you get. Highly recommended. Go see for yourself!}

WHAT: Temptation Cabaret introduces old-world cabaret to South Florida with this provocative and interactive performance. Temptation’s Master of Ceremonies transports guests from the bustling Hard Rock hotel to the lace-lined streets of 19th century Paris with his theatrical introduction to each act which includes his allusion to past trysts with the seven dancers and aerialist. The suggestive performance features a series of artfully choreographed scenes set to popular music, both old and new. TEMPTATION also features two enthralling routines by the remarkably gifted aerialist who contorts herself mid-air supported only by two satin oversized ribbons. This unprecedented performance is a must-see for all South Floridians looking to be captivated.

Spinello Gallery’s Farley Aguilar Ulf at Art & Culture Center Of Hollywood 3/26/10

Farley Aguilar | Coronation [2010] | Oil on Linen | 60″ x 48″

ART & CULTURE CENTER OF HOLLYWOOD: 1650 Harrison St., Hollywood, FL – 33020
SOLO DEBUT: Farley Aguilar | “Ulf”
OPENING RECEPTION: Friday, March 26th, 6-9pm

Spinello Gallery is proud to announce a new addition to the Spinello family, Farley Aguilar. Aguilar’s debut solo exhibition, “Ulf,” features a suite of paintings hosted by the Art & Culture Center of Hollywood (1650 Harrison St., Hollywood, FL – 33020) on Friday, March 26th, 6-9pm.

Farley Aguilar paintings are based on a character Aguilar conjured up and refers to as “Ulf.” “Ulf” is an old Norse term for wolf and it’s also a common male name in Scandinavia and Germany. The series tracks the rise and fall of this creature/character, from his supernatural origins (The witches casting a spell to the full moon) to his destruction by his own followers.

The artist in these works, explores people’s need to create fantasy in order to deal with the fact that they are simply pawns of fate. The nature of life and death are truly mysteries that are not understood. The symbol of the wolf is significant because they are thought of as loners – many ancient culture’s myths are based on insights gleaned from the wolf’s wandering nature. Another notable source of inspiration for Aguilar are artists like Ingmar Bergman and Dostoevsky, who blend reality with dreams, magic, and horror in order to explore what is beneath our standard social reality.

Opening Reception: Friday, March 26th, 2010 / Exhibition through April 25th, 2010.

Spinello Gallery prides itself in exhibiting intelligent works of art in every medium by contemporary local Miami emerging artists. Spinello Gallery has become the playground for unorthodox and experimental artists who don’t easily fit into the confines of the traditional gallery space. Spinello Gallery is steadily making headway in the Miami Art Scene and beyond becoming a contender in the Art World.

Opening Reception: Fri., Feb. 26, 6-9 pm
Haitian-born, Miami-based contemporary artist Adler Guerrier will create a new site-specific exhibition in the Center’s main gallery that will explore the effects of geography, politics, and history on Hollywood, Florida, and nearby environs. Guerrier’s multi-dimensional exhibition will employ a variety of media, including photography, drawings, sculpture, and video, to express a “psycho-geographic” narrative of a distinctive cityscape that includes an urban center, quiet neighborhoods, and a lively beachfront. Guerrier finds inspiration in the simple act of walking city streets, which he describes as a “political and poetic act.”

The Big Beat at Hollywood’s Arts Park world record drumming for Mr. Holland’s Opus 11/1/09

TITLE SPORTS DRINK JOINS THE BIG BEAT 2 ON COURSE TO BREAK WORLD RECORD FOR A GOOD CAUSE

The BIG BEAT started out as a dream for Jeffery Lee. The owner of Resurrection Drums located in Hollywood, Florida imagined thousands of people coming together for one great cause and a world record. Last year his dream became a reality as he brought together a record number of drummers assembled through the Big Five Network spanning nine cities to play the same beat at the same time to raise money to bring the gift of music to underprivileged schools in South Florida. This year Title Sports Drink joins the passionate Jeffery Lee on a crusade help others through music and top the world record once again.

Jeffery Lee feels that music is a universal language with no barriers. He sees a disturbing trend in where school districts are cutting out music programs which he feels is a vital part of children’s development. This is where the Big Beat comes in. Last year $45,000 dollars were raised for Mr. Holland’s Opus. Mr. Holland’s Opus is a charitable organization that provides new and used instruments to underprivileged schools. The best part is they make sure all the donations raised go to schools here in South Florida. This year 11 cities will come together and play the same beat together to break the world record once again. Jeffery is expecting about 200 drummers to participate in the world record attempt and over 2000 spectators and other drummers to come out and enjoy the festivities which will have a festival like atmosphere. Among the 2000 strong will be celebrity drummers Jorge Moreno (Latin Grammy winner), Derek Roddy (winner of Fastest Drummer Competition), Russ Miller (Cher, Lionel Ritchie, Nelly Furtado), Willie Stewart (Third World, Bob Marley and Stevie Wonder), recording artist Eric Nelson, and Fushu Daiko Taiko Drummers. All cities will be linked by video screen to authenticate the record. This year Jeffery and the Big Beat will be getting a push from Title Sports Drink.
Title Sports Drink and the Big Beat have certain parallels which make this a great marriage. Jeffrey claims that a long session on the drums can be compared to running a marathon. Jeffrey figured that Title would be a perfect fit to help his drummers achieve the world record. Title Sports Drink is on their own crusade to introduce Title into the public school system. The junk food which includes Gatorade and sodas are contributing to the diabetes and the obesity issues seen today in children. Title has half the sugar and sodium of other drinks and carries only 30 calories per serving yes it provide more healthy electrolytes and natural energy than other sports drinks. Professional athletes like the Miami Dolphins own Ronnie Brown and Buffalo Bills star Terrell Owens believe in the product so much that they have joined the Title team and become official representatives of the sports drink. Delicious in taste, Title proudly claims the top spot nutritionally. It’s all natural, proprietary formulation fuels the body with the perfect blend of electrolytes and ionic trace minerals. Athletes don’t experience the crashes or cramping that is associated with other sports drinks. No sodium danger, no high fructose corn syrup, and no fake colors make Title Sports Drink the go to drink for any athlete that is aiming for the title.
The Big Beat will be a one-of-a-kind experience to be enjoyed by any age. On this one day over 2000 people will come together in the heart of South Florida for the love of music and children. For more information: http://www.rezdrums.com.
The Big Beat takes place at: Hollywood’s Arts Park, located at US1, and Hollywood Blvd. in Hollywood. Sunday, November 1st from 12:00pm to 7:00 pm!

Cinderella and Rockerfella
Broadway Actors
Friday, July 24, 2009, 5 pm
Hollywood Central Performing Arts Center, US-1 and Monroe Street
A modern, panto-style reworking of the classic tale, including all the traditional characters: downtrodden Cinderella, Rockerfella (formerly known as Prince Charming!), Buttons, the Ugly Sisters, and the Fairy Godmother, with a selection of additional characters, from music managers and paparazzi, to good and bad fairies – all placed in a world of fame and celebrity.
With fresh and relevant things to say about fame, fortune and how true love will win in the end, it has a wonderfully comical script, fabulous songs and plenty of opportunity for audience participation.

Thoroughly-Modern-Millie
Thoroughly Modern Millie
Broadway Actors Advanced
Saturday, July 25, 2009, 2 pm
Hollywood Central Performing Arts Center, US-1 and Monroe Street
Taking place in New York City in 1922, Thoroughly Modern Millie tells the story of young Millie Dillmount, who has just moved to the city in search of a new life for herself. It’s a New York full of intrigue and jazz – a time when women were entering the workforce and the rules of love and social behavior were changing forever.
Based on the popular movie, the stage version of Thoroughly Modern Millie includes a full score of new songs and bright dance numbers. Filled with frisky flappers, dashing leading men and a dragon-lady of a villainess audiences will love to hate, Thoroughly Modern Millie is a perfectly constructed evening of madcap merriment.

Tickets are $7 for adults and $4 for children under 12-years-old. Tickets can be purchased at the box office 1 hour prior to the show. Performances take place at Hollywood Central Performing Arts Center, US-1 and Monroe Street (1770 Monroe Street). Cick here for more information.

Limited slots are still open in the remaining sessions of Summer Camp, including Broadway Actors, Young Artists Advanced, and Young Artists/Young Actors. Click here for more information.

GAPAL will be performing his unique Method Chromosymphony and painting 2 pieces each for the 3 concerts.

The Ensemble will be performing to a huge crowd, expected to be at the door and down US1 from the Performing Arts Center in Hollywood. All three Organizations have done a massive ad campaign since early February and we have scheduled several radio interviews and have the news media supporting these causes.

On April 12, ACIOI represented itself and the Orchestra during the Marlins Game at Dolphin Stadium to a large crowd, ACIOI displayed the rare tiger maple Violin donated to the Orchestra at the Community Clubhouse Booth, we are privileged to have the honor of being recognized by the Marlins for our community leadership.

The Art Division of ACIOI has a campaign for utilizing broken and severely damaged musical equipment and instruments and turning them into art. Sales from these treasures from trash will enable the Orchestra to continue in its development.

The funding for major scheduled productions needs Underwriters, Investors and Sponsors on every level. Sponsors that ACIOI does have are; Toshiba, Marlins, Panthers, Heat, Dolphins, Bills, Steelers, Prizewheel.com, The Florida Aquarium, Horse Power Sales of Boynton Beach, New Times, ARTSERVE, Hollywood Performing Arts Center, Association of Fundraising Professionals, S.C.O.R.E., Hard Rock, Chicago Bulls, Cuillo Center for Arts and WLRN.

The South Florida Philharmonic Orchestra is comprised of 40 of the World’s Best Musicians under the Leadership of International and US National Conductor Donald Covert. All of these Musician’s have an active background in touring, are competition winner’s and many of them are teachers. They have sacrificed long and hard to be at the pinnacle of their chosen Instrument and many have the training in several to many Instruments.

This is a team effort made up of outstanding soloists and throughout this endeavor, the Staff of SFLPHL will bring the individual to the forefront to allow that talent to be shared by all of us. The goal of US National Conductor Donald Covert is to bring a full Orchestra of which he is known for in Europe back to Europe with the World Class Musicians that he is presently training with.

Maestro Donald Covert is one of the very few Conductors worldwide that memorize the work and will lead the Orchestra without sheet music. His scholastic Degrees, Worldwide tours and training under Leonard Bernstein, give him the right to proclaim himself as US National Conductor and we agree with the Maestro.

Lola’s on Harrison Brings Passion to the Most Romantic Day of the Year with a Red-Inspired Menu that Oozes Love 2/14/09

COLOR ME VALENTINE:
CUPID SAYS ROUGE IS THE RAGE THIS HOLIDAY

Lola’s on Harrison Brings Passion to the Most Romantic Day of the Year
with a Red-Inspired Menu that Oozes Love

The color red is often associated with lust, passion, love and beauty. Infusing these characteristics into his Valentine’s Day dishes, Chef Michael Wagner from Lola’s on Harrison has chosen red as the theme throughout his V-Day menu.

A popular food color known to stimulate the appetite, Chef Wagner has captured the essence of the most romantic day of the year in a three-course, prix fixe menu with a celebration toast and in an early “lovebirds” special. From 5 to 6:30 p.m. on February 14, Lola’s will offer their red menu for $40.00 per person. After 6:30 p.m., the menu — based on the four steps for the perfect, love-filled evening that represents each course — will be $65.00 per person. Lola’s red Valentine’s menu features:

The Pick Up Line: toast to a fresh raspberry bellini.

Your First Move: choice of seared ahi tuna, red pepper and red cabbage slaw with fire roasted tomato dressing or red beet salad with frisee, poached pears, maytag blue cheese, candied pecans in champagne vinaigrette.

Seduce Your Senses: select a red chili crusted filet mignon with black diamond cheddar au gratin potatoes and smoked tomato-chipotle sauce or skillet seared Chilean sea bass with spice red lentil pancakes and roasted red pepper butter sauce.

Sweet Ending: red velvet cupcake with a cream cheese frosting or fresh strawberry rhubarb pie with whipped cream and strawberry sauce.

In addition to the prix fixe red menu, Lola’s will have a limited menu available for patrons who are interested in the restaurant’s popular, signature dishes.

For Valentine’s reservations, call 954.927.9851. To learn more about Lola’s on Harrison, visit www.lolasonharrison.com.

Lola’s on Harrison is located at 2032 Harrison Street in Hollywood, Fla. The restaurant is open for dinner Sunday, Tuesday and Wednesday from 5-10 p.m.; Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 5-12 a.m.; closed Mondays. Ample free parking is located behind the restaurant. All major credit cards accepted. For more information, call 954.927.9851 or visit www.lolasonharrison.com.

James Beard Menu At Lola’s by Chef Michael Wagner

In a Tribute to Robert Mondavi, Chef Michael Wagner Shares His First James Beard Menu with Patrons of Lola’s on Harrison during January and February

After a successful James Beard dinner in New York City on December 13, Chef Michael Wagner is introducing his “Contemporary American Comfort Dinner” at his downtown Hollywood restaurant, Lola’s on Harrison. The menu is a modified version of Wagner’s Beard House debut, which garnered great critical acclaim.

The four-course, prix-fixe menu features popular selections from the sold-out dinner, inclusive of an amuse bouche, an appetizer, an entrée, and dessert. Patrons may choose between a $35 food-only menu or a $55 food and wine pairing, featuring a selection of perfectly paired Robert Mondavi wines. The menus will be available January 15 through February 28, exclusive of Valentine’s Day.

Wagner was discovered by James Beard House representatives last year, and although only being open for less than a year, received the invitation to prepare a dinner at the famous Chelsea brownstone. At age 35, Wagner is among Florida’s youngest chefs to receive this honorable invite.

“I was truly honored to receive the invitation. It was exciting to have an opportunity to not only prepare this dinner in the most prestigious American culinary institution, but to be able to return and cook in my hometown of New York. I am introducing this winter-theme menu to South Florida to share with all our guests who could not make the trip to dine with us at the Beard House.”

Staying true to his signature cuisine, Wagner paired American comfort favorites with exclusive Mondavi wines in a tribute to both American icons James Beard and the late Mr. Mondavi. The Lola’s version of the James Beard experience begins with an amuse bouche of Boston Diver Scallops wrapped with crispy applewood smoked bacon, fresh mango and drizzled with an apricot-mango glaze. Next, Chef Wagner has paired a creamy Roasted Chestnut Soup with the Robert Mondavi Chardonnay Reserve 2006. The main course, New Zealand Lamb Chops topped with a fennel marmalade and citrus-mint yogurt sauce, finds harmony with the Robert Mondavi Merlot 2005. For a sweet ending, indulge in the Naples Concord Grape Pie with peanut butter ice cream and the Robert Mondavi Moscato D’Oro 2006.

Michael Wagner, chef and owner of Lola’s on Harrison, named a “turkey trendsetter” by the National Turkey Federation

SOUTH FLORIDA CHEF NAMED A “TURKEY TRENDSETTER”
BY THE NATIONAL TURKEY FEDERATION

Lola’s on Harrison Gives Comfort this Holiday Season with A Turkey Recipe and Festive Side Dishes to “Gobble Gobble”
The National Turkey Federation (NTF) has named South Florida’s Michael Wagner, chef and owner of Lola’s on Harrison, as one of three “Turkey Trendsetters” for 2008. Chef Wagner’s Pan Roasted Turkey Tenderloins recipe garnished with festive side dishes is available on the popular “Turkey Trendsetter” feature at EatTurkey.com.

“An innovator in the kitchen, Chef Wagner was chosen as one of this year’s culinary leaders for his use of turkey and how it is seasoned and paired with local ingredients, ” said Sherrie Rosenblatt, NTF’s vice president of marketing and communications. “Wagner’s interpretation of turkey — simple with robust flavors, traditional side dishes with a modern-day spin, and his commitment to supporting regional produce makes him a stand out to his patrons and the culinary community.”

The “Turkey Trendsetter” feature showcases how chefs across the country are incorporating turkey on their menus in creative and unique ways. At his elegant and contemporary American restaurant, Chef Wagner serves turkey with elements of the holidays, which is extremely popular among guests year-round even in the warm South Florida climate. His Pan Roasted Turkey Tenderloins with Caramelized Brussels Sprouts, Creamy Polenta, and Pomegranate-Cherry Gravy has been the most popular menu item since the restaurant opened in July 2007.

“The dish is a play on the flavor profiles you would expect at the holiday table, which is very comforting for our guests. The tenderloin product is underused in South Florida so when our guests see it on the menu served with cherry gravy, it peaks their interest,” said Chef Wagner.

Aimed at being value-oriented, Chef Wagner strives to provide his guests with the freshest and finest ingredients available. All of the indigenous fruits and vegetables at his disposal from local farms in South Florida enable him to be extremely inventive, and turkey’s versatility lends itself well to the dishes he puts on the menu.

“Turkey is a blank canvas for mouth-watering combinations of flavors,” explained Chef Wagner. “Pairing it with tropical fruits and vegetables like mango, papaya, star fruit, and yucca makes great dishes.”

Chef Wagner’s background is in fine dining and traditional steak house restaurants. At Lola’s on Harrison, his philosophy and approach to cooking is very simple – start out with great ingredients, support local farms, and use as many resources as possible. For Chef Wagner this has translated into an extremely successful restaurant that has received accolades from the New York Times, Miami Herald, and in 2008 he was named a “Noteworthy Newcomer” by Zagat.
