Co-presented by O, Miami, Miami–Dade County District 11 Commissioner Zapata, and The New Tropic, Day of Thrones is an epic, team-competition battle of “field day”-style games mixed with nerdy brain games.

Four “houses” compete against one another at Hammocks Community Park in The West End. All will have fun, but there can be only one house at the end sitting on the throne.

Tickets ($5) and sign-up are required and include a “house” t-shirt. Space is limited, sign up now!

We’ll have DJ Hottpants and DJ Lolo spinning tunes to keep you pumped up.

We have a BBQ Smoker joining us too. They’re going to be selling a delicious mix of BBQ Ribs, burgers and sides.

Celebrate the joy and magic of the holiday season at The Falls! On Saturday, November 21, The Falls Shopping Center will ring in the season with the 19th Annual “Miracle on 136th Street” Holiday Parade. This year, the free event will be led by celebrity Grand Marshal, Raini Rodriguez, of The Disney Channel’s ‘Austin & Ally’ series.

Each year, the annual event is attended by more than 20,000 Miami residents and visitors. Miami-Dade dignitaries and celebrities alike will ride through the parade in vintage and convertible cars. In addition to local dignitaries and Raini Rodriguez, the parade features local marching bands, holiday-themed floats, bag pipers, stilt walkers, junkanoos, giant puppets, holiday character favorites, community groups and internationally recognized costumed characters.

Listen for jingling sleigh bells and a jolly, magical laugh because after the parade, Santa Claus will set up in Center Court to share the spirit of the holiday season! The spirit of the holidays will extend beyond the North Pole. Following the parade, visitors will be enchanted by the thousands of lights, giant animal topiaries, elaborate water elements and more in the shopping center’s gardens and waterfalls.

Following the holiday parade, Raini Rodriguez will perform on the Center Court stage at 6:30 PM, singing joyous holiday music. Guests will also enjoy entertainment including a magical snow globe performance, belly dancing and more, near Macy’s & Bloomingdale’s.

Additionally, retailers will offer great holiday shopping opportunities, in-store promotions and specials, many of which are included in The Falls Holiday Coupon Book! Please visit Simon Guest Services at The Falls for more information.

Spectators are encouraged to arrive early and line both sides of the parade route before the 4:00 p.m. kick-off. Kiddos Magazine, South Florida’s parenting magazine, will host a free Back-to-School Bash and Second Anniversary celebration at the Falls Mall on Saturday, August 1st and Sunday, August 2nd.

Miami Cancer Institute will host the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life of East Kendall — a survivors’ celebration, camp-out and relay-style walk around the hospital campus lake. The fundraiser, which begins at 12 noon, Saturday, March 14, and ends the next morning, benefits cancer research, education and patient services. More than 3,000 participants are expected to pitch tents and raise awareness and funds for the cause, at the Baptist Hospital campus, 8900 North Kendall Drive, next to the future site of Miami Cancer Institute. Teams are made up of 10 to 15 people who walk relay-style around the lake during the day and throughout the night to communicate the message that cancer never sleeps. The event is supported by Baptist Health South Florida and it has been held at Baptist Hospital for nine years. Strike up the bans! The official start of the Holiday season will get underway when the 18th annual Miracle on 136th Street Parade marches in to The Falls Saturday, November 22, 2014 at 4:00 p.m.

2014 Grand Marshal is Peyton List of Disney’s ‘Jessie’

See local marching bands, bag pipers stilt walkers, a junkanoo band, giant puppets, a Dixieland Band, local dignitaries, costumed characters, celebrities and more. Culminating with the arrival of Santa, the Miracle on 136th Street Parade promises to be one of the biggest spectacles of the Holidays. Free and open to the public, this year’s Holiday Parade benefits the South Dade YMCA Family Center.

Following the Holiday parade at 6pm, singer/songwriter Tatiana K will take the stage to perform songs from her upcoming album. The Grand Marshal will take the stage at 6:30pm in the Center Court following the Holiday parade to preform songs from her upcoming album! Each year, in celebration of Art Basel Miami Beach, The Patricia and Phillip Frost Art Museum at Florida International University hosts Breakfast in the Park. This event draws hundreds of art enthusiasts, patrons, collectors, gallery owners and artists from around the world, many of whom are visiting Miami for Art Basel. Each year a noted sculptor is invited to speak. Guests enjoy a complimentary outdoor breakfast, informal lecture and guided tours of The Sculpture Park as well as the exhibitions in The Frost Art Museum.

This year’s speaker, Daniel Arsham is a contemporary American artist whose art blurs the lines between art, architecture and performance. He explores issues of natural versus manufactured or intention versus happenstance.

In 2003 Arsham graduated from The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science in NYC and received the Gelman Trust Fellowship Award. Arsham’s work has always played with notions of architecture. His sculptures and installations make architecture do things that it is not supposed to do. It wrinkles and ripples, and appears to blow like a curtain, it confounds our notions of how architecture is made and used.

In 2008, Daniel Arsham and Alex Mustonen established Snarkitecture, a Brooklyn based art and design studio that creates everything from functional objects to installation to stage design. It is a collaborative practice that aims to make architecture perform the unexpected, focusing on the investigation of structure, material and program and how these elements can be manipulated to serve new and imaginative purposes. Snarkitecture has received many high profile commissions including the baseball stadium in Miami, Storefront in NYC and Design Miami 2012.

Arsham’s work has been shown at PS1 in New York, The Museum of Contemporary Art in Miami, the MCA Chicago, Athens Biennial in Greece, The New Museum in New York, Mills College Art Museum in Oakland, California and Carré d’Art de Nîmes, France among others. Daniel Arsham’s artistic practice includes commissioned public art, performance and architectural projects including several high profile collaborations with choreographer Merce Cunningham, Producer Pharrell Williams, Dior Homme, Jonah Bokaer and Designer Hedi Slimane.

Daniel Arsham was born in Cleveland, Ohio in 1980, was raised in Miami and currently lives and works in New York City.

Animals are adapted to the conditions found in their particular habitats, so, you will most likely come across dexterous climbers living where there are trees, and skilled swimmers occupying water habitats. Exploring a variety of natural places filled with life is a lot of fun at Zoo Camp!

Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes
The way animals are, from head to toe, may be very useful in their survival. For example, if you were an egg-eating snake you’d be able to swallow whole an egg bigger than your head! Children will have lots of fun taking a look at very special head, shoulders, knees and toes found in the Animal Kingdom.

Animal X-Ray
This camp day will highlight what supports vertebrate bodies: bones. Of all sizes and shapes, they serve vertebrates well. Through exciting activities using replicas and preserved bones, everyone will be introduced to animal anatomy and will have a better understanding of how animals are built inside.

Birds
What do hummingbirds and vultures have in common? Discover the amazing variety of behaviors, colors and shapes displayed in the birds’ world. Finding out how to help protecting bird species from extinction is part of this fun and feathery camp day.

Animal Giants
Let’s explore facts and behaviors of some large and remarkable animals that inhabit our planet. They are enormous reptiles and birds, colossal mammals and impressive insects! You will have a great time identifying some of their unique survival adaptations and learning about the challenges they encounter every day.

The Tropical Flowering Tree Society will be hosting its annual plant show and sale. There will also be fun “green” activities and entertainment for the entire family as well as animal enrichment with recycled items and/or natural materials like newspapers, cardboard tubes, bamboo, old tires, fire hoses, and more.

During Party for the Planet, guests can come in free of charge if they turn in a cellphone as part of our ECO-CELL phone recycling program. Not only will each person donating a cellphone enter the zoo for free on these two days, but they will also help save gorillas! Cell phones include coltan, a mineral extracted in the deep forests of Congo in central Africa, home to the world’s endangered lowland gorillas. Fueled by the worldwide cell phone boom, Congo’s out-of-control coltan mining business has in recent years led to a dramatic reduction of animal habitat and the rampant slaughter of great apes for the illegal bush-meat trade. By turning in your cell phone, we can hopefully reduce the need for additional coltan … and help protect the gorillas.

Zoo Miami presents “MUSIC OF THE AMERICAS” at Zoo Miami’s Amazon and Beyond Exhibit now through April 2014.

After enjoying a day strolling around Zoo Miami’s beautiful pathways, gazing at more than 2,000 amazing animals in their natural habitats, and enjoying the refreshing shade provided by our 1,200 trees and plants, there is no better way to relax than at our Amazon and Beyond’s Village Plaza, where you can sway to rhythmic samba, dance with exotic Brazilian dancers, or just sit and relax to the soothing sounds of South American flutes, woodwinds, and harp.

\Performances will take place at 1 and 2:15 p.m. Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, Miami-Dade County Schools teacher planning days, and holidays.

In an effort to join the battle against childhood cancer, South Florida smooth jazz artist Luis Alas will host a concert at the Miami Baptist Church West Kendall Amphitheater on Saturday, February 1, 2014 at 7:30 p.m. to benefit Stand Foundation, a 501 (3) non-profit organization started in memory of Alexandra “Alex” Scott, who succumbed to the disease in 2004.

“I have had a blessed life, not of money and wealth but of amazing opportunities and this talent which I always love to put it to use to help others,” shares Alas. “Cancer took my father from me and it was a tragic loss, but when I read about stories like Alex’s and Bella it hurts me, not only the suffering the children go through, but of the parents, family and loved ones around them.”

Alas and a cast of amazing musicians and vocalists from around the country will be performing in a romantic, smooth jazz at the concert deemed “Romance by Sax.” He released two singles in 2013, one called “Mr. Magic” and the other instrumental remake of the pop ballad “You’re My Everything”, which got as high as #55 on the ReverbNation Jazz chart.

Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF) emerged from the front yard lemonade stand of cancer patient Alexandra “Alex” Scott (1996-2004). In 2000, 4-year-old Alex announced that she wanted to hold a lemonade stand to raise money to help find a cure for all children with cancer. Since Alex held that first stand, the Foundation bearing her name has evolved into a national fundraising movement, complete with thousands of supporters across the country carrying on her legacy of hope.

To date, Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation (www.alexslemonade.org), a registered 501(c)3 charity, has raised more than $60 million toward fulfilling Alex’s dream of finding a cure, funding over 275 research projects nationally. Zoo Miami welcomes “Creatures of Habitat – a gazillion-piece animal adventure” all made of LEGO® bricks. ZoMiami is proud to present this most exciting, educational, and fun exhibit from January 29 – June 22, 2014, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. daily, at Dr. Wilde’s World (DWW). The exhibit will be displayed both in DWW’s air-conditioned museum space as well as on its outdoor plaza. The Creatures of Habitat, a popular exhibit made up of LEGO® bricks, comes to Zoo Miami from the Philadelphia Zoo, where it captured a wide audience. The purpose of this exhibit is multifaceted: to educate visitors on the potential extinction of various animal species and habitats; to inspire them to protect our planet; to teach them how our behaviors and actions contribute to the destruction of these animals and their habitats; and how we can change our lives to ensure and promote our planet, animal species, and habitat conservation.

Humboldt Penguin Explore the rocky shores of Punta San Juan, Peru, home to colonies of Humboldt penguins. Be educated about the harmful effects to the penguin of over-fishing, seabird and marine mammal communities.

Polar Bear Journey into the arctic tundra as you observe an eight and one-half foot polar bear stranded on a melting ice floe. Learn what changes you can make to reverse the loss of the polar ice caps before it’s too late.

Micronesian Kingfisher Travel to the island of Guam to discover the extraordinary plight of the Micronesian Kingfisher, a small bird that was driven to extinction in the wild from the invasive brown tree snake.

Creatures of Habitat, designed by the Philadelphia Zoo with the engagement of LEGO® Certified Professional Sean Kenney, is the first hands-on, interactive exhibit about vanishing habitats told through sculptures made of LEGO® bricks. It took Sean and his team over six months, and hundreds of thousands of toy bricks, to create the thirty-two individual sculptures that make up the Creatures of Habitat exhibit. The whimsical habitat sets for each sculpture were conceived and designed by the Philadelphia Zoo’s creative team. Illustrations by Jo Tronc and Richard Carbajal lend a storybook quality to the sets and help inspire visitors to save vanishing species and habitats. Before coming to Zoo Miami, the exhibit was on display at the Hogle Zoo in Utah. This exhibit was not made in conjunction with the LEGO® Group.

This show is a throwback to 1920’s New York City when big bands, popular song writing radio shows and creating catchy tunes were all the rage. Set in Tin Pan Alley, June Moon features a wet-behind-the-ears young songwriter named Fred Stevens who sets off by train from Schenectady to NYC to make a name for himself in the world of song writing. Trouble begins when he and his composer partner, Paul, sell a song to a music publisher that becomes a hit. Between the lines Fred finds out who his real friends are and who he truly loves. This is a sweet, romantic drama with lots of music and laughs to counteract the betrayals. Treat yourself and your significant other to an early Valentine’s present by coming to see this little gem of a show.

Marlins Ayudan has teamed up with Special Olympics to host a softball clinic in preparation for their state competition. The event will be held at Gulliver Preparatory School (6575 N Kendall Drive) on Monday, November 4th from 10 A.M. until 12:45 P.M. This is the 4th year Marlins Ayudan, Special Olympics and Gulliver Preparatory School have partnered together in hosting the Softball Clinic.

The athletes participating will represent G. Holmes Braddock, Southridge Sr. High School, City of Miami, Our Pride Academy and the City of Doral. All five delegations represent the teams who will advance to the state competitions on November 15 – 17 at ESPN Wide World of Sports.

The clinics will be divided into skills stations which include, fielding, throwing and hitting. Skills stations will be led by members from Marlins Ayudan team Pulse as well as Juniors and Seniors from Gulliver’s Varsity Baseball and Softball teams.

On Saturday, October 12th, Blue Martini Kendall hosted a Happy Hour to benefit the D Amor Foundation. The D Amor Foundation’s mission is to provide hope, and to help children with autism achieve a better quality of life by providing families with resources, educational tools and access to therapies such as speech, occupational, art, music and sensory integration, all of which are integral to managing the disorder. Several companies donated services for a raffle and silent auction. Donations go directly to fund programs for children with autism, including Tae Kwon Do, soccer, music, art and other activities for families affected by the neurodevelopment disorder. The D Amor Foundation was founded by Maria and Jose Montalvo in honor of their son, Diego, who was diagnosed with autism at age 2. Microsoft opened its second full line retail store in Florida. The store is located in the first phase of the brand new expansion of the Dadeland Mall.

 

More than five hundred people gathered for the chance to win giveaways which ranged from free tickets to a Lupe Fiasco and Gym Class heroes concert to a “Surface” tablet.

 

The first person in line had been camping in the mall since 10:30 P.M. the night before the opening. He was awarded several prices including a “Surface”. Other lucky winners participated via Twitter and had their names called out from the crowd.

 

John Case, corporate vice president, Office Division presented more than $1 million in grants to different organizations.

 

True to form, in what now has become the norm in computer store openings, the employees started screaming from inside the store, exciting the crowd. As soon as the ribbon was cut, the curtain which had been covering the front of the store came down. The pandemonium reached an electrifying pitch.

 

Overall, Microsoft now has of 66 full-line and specialty retail stores.

Funds raised will support Destination Africa, a group of staff members who have visited Africa and raise money to send other staff members to Africa.

Swim through tropical landscapes with turtles, dive beneath the ice with penguins and forage in the forest with a family of bears — experience life as animals do in a new traveling exhibition opening at Zoo Miami.

“National Geographic Crittercam: The World Through Animal Eyes,” a 6,000-square-foot traveling exhibition developed by the National Geographic Museum in Washington, D.C., will run from January 18 through May 5, 2012 at Zoo Miami. Crittercam, invented by National Geographic marine biologist Greg Marshall, is a scientific video- and data-gathering tool safely worn by wild animals, offering researchers insights into animal behavior and clues to protecting animals and the world we share.

Through interactive displays, firsthand footage and evocative environments, visitors to the exhibit can explore the many stories and animals that are part of the science and adventure of Crittercam. The exhibit focuses on Crittercam’s deployment on seals and sea lions, sharks, sea turtles, whales, penguins, bears and lions.

In the seals and sea lions section, a series of viewing and listening stations show how these animals communicate, hunt, feed, care for their young and attract mates. Visitors then move to the sharks section for a close-up view of an 18-foot-long great white shark model and displays that illustrate the hunting and migratory behaviors of several shark species. A shark fin model features the latest way of attaching the Crittercam — via a fin clamp. As visitors feel the rough sandpaper that keeps the clamp in place, they can watch a video depicting daring deployments, from early tether systems to a researcher deploying the fin clamp by hand.

The sea turtles section offers insights into how turtles search for mates, different foraging behaviors and how the animals avoid becoming a meal themselves. From atop a life-size model of a leatherback, children and adults can watch point-of-view footage from a female leatherback, while other displays show life as seen by loggerhead and hawksbill turtles.

In the whales section, visitors enter into a chamber of bubbles to see the cooperative behavior of humpbacks known as bubble net or lunge feeding. Other highlights include an up-close look at the toothed whales of Hawaii and footage of the mysterious “unicorn of the sea,” the narwhal.

In the penguin pod, exhibition-goers enter the world of Penguin Ranch, the main research site of the Crittercam team in Antarctica, to investigate a penguin’s life beneath the ice and learn about research with penguins trained to wear Crittercam. Visitors can squeeze into an observation tube to watch a video of penguins soaring underwater, while youngsters can crawl through a tunnel and pop up in a bubble to come face-to-face with a penguin wearing a working Crittercam. On exiting the tunnel, children can view footage of themselves from the penguin’s perspective.

The terrestrial version of Crittercam is the newest development in the program. In the land animals section of the exhibition, visitors learn about the trial-and-error process of developing the land-based technology, from deployments on domestic dogs and cats to partnering with animal rehabilitation centers. Visitors also learn about the unique challenges of studying land animals, from penetrating the dense forest habitat of the grizzly bear to getting the Crittercam collar to pass the lion cub “chew toy” test. Point-of-view footage shows a young Alaskan bear cub napping, feeding and traveling with its family, as well as a lioness hunting, tending to her cubs and sharing a meal with them.

The final section of the exhibition focuses on Crittercam technology, with information on how it works and the original inspiration that led to its development. Visitors can design their own Crittercams using Build-a-Cam, touch a Crittercam model and examine deployment methods such as an adhesive patch, penguin harness and suction cup. Youngsters can try their hand at a Crittercam puzzle. There is also a “What’s New” kiosk that features recent deployments and findings on species such as the tree kangaroo and Humboldt squid.

From January 18-May 5, 2013, Crittercam will be open at Zoo Miami’s Dr. Wilde’s World from 10 am to 5 pm daily. Crittercam is included with Zoo admission. Zoo Miami is located at 12400 SW 152 street; Miami, FL 33177. General Zoo Admission is: $15.95 plus tax, per adult and $11.95 plus tax, per child (3-12). Thousands of stuffed animals expected to be donated to local charities 
 
Local children are getting a free day of fun at Zoo Miami, along with new teddy bears and more thanks to “Travelodge’s The Great Sleepy Bear Swap.”
 
The special one-day event invites children and their families to bring a gently-used stuffed animal to the zoo to donate to charity in exchange for one free kid’s admission and a brand new Sleepy Bear teddy bear.
 
While free admission is limited to the first 100 children who bring a donation, everyone at the zoo is able to participate in fun-filled activities including face painting and drawing contests along with giveaways such as bear tattoos, National Geographic activity books and Sleepy Bear masks. A keeper from the zoo will also be on hand to educate children about bears and the role they play in the wild. 
 
“For over 75 years, the Travelodge hotel brand has been delivering memorable experiences and giving back to the communities where our hotels are located,” said Mark Young, Travelodge brand senior vice president. “With Travelodge’s The Great Sleepy Bear Swap, we’re continuing both of these great traditions while giving everyone in the Miami area a chance to come out and say hi to Sleepy Bear, our beloved mascot.”
 
Stuffed animals gathered from the events will be donated to Stuffed Animals for Emergencies (S.A.F.E.), a national organization that cleans and redistributes the toys to children in need. For every stuffed animal donated at the event, the Travelodge hotel brand will match it with a donation of three brand new Sleepy Bear teddy bears to the Starlight Children’s Foundation, up to 1,500 bears. Starlight is the signature charity of Travelodge and parent company Wyndham Hotel Group.
 
“For many children, the gift of a stuffed animal is a simple gesture that can help brighten their day, especially when you’re talking about children facing severe illness and other hardships,” said Young. “Starlight and S.A.F.E. are both organizations that do great work with children across the country and we’re delighted to be able to support them through these events.”
 
Young also announced that the Travelodge brand would make a $10,000 donation through the Association of Zoos and Aquariums in support of black bear conservation.
 
This is the fourth of five events to be hosted by Travelodge at zoo’s across America, with the last event scheduled to take place in San Francisco, Calif. on October 16, 2012. Previous locations included The Philadelphia Zoo in Philadelphia, Penn.; The Fort Worth Zoo in Fort Worth, Texas and the Los Angeles Zoo in Los Angeles. “The Rodeo” is South Florida’s premiere skateboarding event. We are certain that this year will be the biggest and best to date. We anticipate having 100+ skaters participate in the event with several hundred spectators and families throughout the day. Amigo Skate Charity travels to Havana Cuba twice a year to provide underprivileged children on the island with free skateboards, art supplies and music equipment. They have hosted skate contests, action sports tours and underground music events in Havana. They return to Cuba in mid-October with a group of skaters from across the globe with the purpose of bringing more skateboarding equipment and a message of international unity, hope and love…

Exciting new features have been added to this year’s roster and we have brought back some past Rodeo favorites to ensure a great time with our usual bone crushing mayhem fun! There will be plenty of free entertainment for the entire family with an interactive street art show, bounce house, live music, face painting and dodge ball! This years we have amped up the music with two live music stages. The "Main Stage’ is hosted by Armory Studios and Idle Hands Productions; with bands playing live music ranging from Surf, punk, rockabilly, thrash, ska and rock. The "Second Stage" will be hosted by Power 96, Sekajipo Genes and Catalyst; with the best in djs, electronica and live hip hop and street art. We are proud to announce that 305 Green will be hosting the “Punk Rock Flea Market” this year with a funky mix of original and eclectic finds, organic and locally made products, vegan and vegetarian food options, live interactive artists, skate shops, product expo and plenty of fun from some of the best independently run businesses in and around Miami.
Get ready for insanity! Miami Street League will be hosting what we hope will be the biggest game of Dodgeball in our Countys history. The game will be followed by a dodgeball tournament so bring your skills.
Alex Yanes will host the Pop Up Gallery with some of Miamis hottest up and coming artists painting live.

Dade County Animal Services is also coming out to host their adoption event with plenty ofcute kitty’s and puppy’s for everyone to take one home!

The skate contest portion of the event will be comprised of six different style contests; a game of skate, highest ollie, blindfolded kick flips, ledge/box contest, barrel jumping and a stair/hubba contest. Contestents will be split up into four divisions; Beginner, Intermediate 12 and under, intermediate 13 and up and Advanced. We will be adding more ramps to give the park a different feel and we have organized the contests in a way that will keep open skating in the park throughout the day ensuring a good time for everyone whether they will be competing or not.
Chris Casey will return this year to be the official contest announcer. He is best known as the cohost of Fuel TVs Captain and Casey show and has also hosted for Maloof Money Cup and Transworld Skateboarding.

The Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum at Florida International University presents Out of the Ordinary Geometry by Lydia Azout and the FIU Faculty Show, featuring Tori Arpad-Cotta’s long, lovely portage and R.F. Buckley’s Reflections on Water, on Wednesday, September 12, 2012 from 6pm-9pm, during Target Wednesday After Hours. The event is free of charge and open to the public.

Out of the Ordinary Geometry by Lydia Azout. Throughout her career as a sculptor, Lydia Azout has focused on the basic elements of form and shape as symbolic of the powers of nature, especially the feminine forces she regards as reflections of creativity, cosmic order and harmony. Often working with monumental structures which she makes out of wood, steel and other materials, Lydia Azout boldly faces the challenges of size and space as she explores the object’s potential to express something beyond its geometric references and delve into a world that acknowledges the spiritual through a contemporary aesthetic. Her installation for the Frost Art Museum calls for the viewer to momentarily suspend the demands of the everyday to interact on an emotional basis with the sculptural forms. The large-scale, site-specific work is multi-media and constructed out of different types of steel and projections to produce a confrontation with the materials, potentially extend the human experience beyond that of the merely functional or obvious, and enter into a relationship directed at perception and personal response. According to the artist, “This exhibition is about the cosmos, Sacred Geometry, the unknown, the mysterious and the magical.” This exhibit, curated by Rebeca Schapiro, runs through October 21.

The FIU Faculty Show features two outstanding artists from the Art & Art History Department, Tori Arpad-Cotta and R.F. Buckley. Arpad-Cotta’s exhibition, long, lovely portage, continues her attention to place and practice, with an installation of projected video, hand-bound books and cast Egyptian paste in which presence and absence mingle.

The rhythms of South Florida waterways and substance of its sand and soil provide the locale for a meditation on the space between things. Buckley describes his exhibition, Reflections on Water, as being about aluminum and light; light and its refraction and interaction with aluminum. “My attempt with aluminum is to present a touchstone to access a few of our stored memories and experiences with water. The most recent iteration attempts to recall reflected light off of water, the movement of water and the fluidity of its changing states."

The FIU College of Architecture + The Arts, the Wolfsonian-FIU and the Frost Art Museum will also be highlighting what each has planned for the upcoming year in the Fall Arts Preview during this Target Wednesday After Hours.

Thirty children with autism registered for the class sponsored by the D’amor Foundation in May. In July, D’amor Foundation sponsored 20 more children with autism, making the total number of registered children 50.

The foundation can sponsor more children and is currently holding an open registration period. Children and young adults 3 years old and up are welcome to register.

Their teacher is grandmaster Francisco Loureda who holds an 8th Dan and has been teaching tae kwon do for over 35 years. Under his training his students have won multiple gold medals in various divisions in the US National and International Championships, US Open and Jr. Pan Am Games.

The D’amor Foundation is a non-profit organization founded by Maria Montalvo, the mother of a child with Autism. She found that therapies, such as, art, music and interaction with horses and dolphins were out of reach for most families because they are not covered by health insurance. The foundation’s goal is to help families cope with Autism and Sensorial Integration Disorder by making resources, educational tools and sensory integration therapies readily available.

The “Little Warrior Challenge” Kids Fitness Fundraiser will be a fun for the entire family, a great alternative to your typical weekend! The Challenge will be broken down into age groups, Kids (5-8), Pre-Teens (9-12), Teens (13-17) and Children (5 and under).

Upon completion of the Little Warrior Challenge, the top male and female adults will compete for the title of “Last Man Standing!” and be pushed to their physical limits in a “boot camp” style workout, hosted by former Navy Seals, SWCC and other Special Forces Operators.

The winner of each age group will receive a free haircut voucher from the Official Miami Marlins Barber courtesy of “Headz Up” Barber Shop. Raffles items will also be available.

On event day, the Little Warrior Project will be collecting ”Care Package” items for troops that are currently deployed. Please feel free to include a letter addressed to the soldier from you and your family.

All proceeds from the event will be used by the Little Warrior Project to create and fund new sports and fitness programs four our military children. Little Warrior Project services are offered at no cost to the Little Warrior and their family. These silent heros need your help to support the mission.

Bring a pair of gloves, shade hat and shovel (if you have them); tools will be supplied. Light refreshments and water will be made available. Bring a reusable water bottle to fill to reduce waste.

Join TREEmendous Miami in this rebuilding – restoration, The Silver Shovel Ministry project.

A fire broke out in the devotional chapel of St. Catherine of Siena on March 14, 2008. Within minutes, nearly the entire church was destroyed. The Silver Shovel Ministry was formed to restore the building and grounds of the church.

TREEmendous Miami is offering the help of our devoted volunteers and supplying many large trees which were donated to us by BMW of North America & Dwell Magazine. We will be planting these trees on Saturday, July 21.
