Cremata Gallery presents Federico Brandt 3/19/10

Cremata Gallery presents the first U.S. exhibition of Federico Brandt
Friday, March 19th, 2010. 7:00 p.m.
Federico Brandt. Construccion del Candidato. Mixed media on canvas. 41.3″ x 49.2″
Opening reception: Friday, March 19th, 2010. 7:00 p.m.
Location: Cremata Gallery. 1646 SW 8th Street. Miami, FL 33135
Dates: From March 11th through April 12th, 2010
Regular hours: Tuesday – Saturday 12:00 – 6:00 p.m. and Mondays by appointment
Admission: Free

Federico Brandt’s paintings gather the best tradition of modernity: his idea of structure, his spirit of invention and variation, order conceived as rhythm and his ability to place in his works an internal luminosity, a field of light that strongly corresponds with his characters and forms.
Federico Brandt is a contemporary artist and an architect by profession, whose work reveals a vision that is always mindful of a construction formed by rectangles or semicircles that he later recomposes into a sensitive architecture, to then work on the surface of the canvas. His polished technical skills are versatile and free. His compositions rise from simple abstract constructions connected by free strokes of thin lines, done without vacillation. Federico Brandt arrives at visual unity with mystery and charm, taking it from modernity to mastery, always requiring the spiritual creator. His work, with neither “folklorism” nor “tipismos”, produces a rhythm between the spaces, where the thoughtful observer will recognize authentic mastery.
Federico Brandt’s background derives from “La Escuela del Sur” formed by Joaquin Torres Garcia, painter and modern art teacher, recognized and honored as one of the important personalities of Latin American Modernism.”… the moral zeal and joy in art making that Torres-Garcia inculcated in his students, gives evidence of what a vibrant creation Latin American Modernism was. It was technically at least as accomplished as its counterpart in the pre-Abstract Expressionist New York of the 30’s and 40’s, but improved upon it, in one crucial respect: it transformed a borrowed European style into one deeply expressive of a New World culture. By Torres-Garcia’s standards, the work produced by El Taller was the genuine utopian article, and for anyone interested in modernism today, it is certainly an art to be reckoned with.”
Federico Brandt’s art retains the viewer’s attention, drawing them in, keeping them looking and generating an emotional response.
Come join us for this exciting show by a contemporary master who after many successful years of showing in Paris, London, Buenos Aires, Punta del Este and Montevideo comes for his “opera prima” to Miami, his first exhibition in the USA.

The Viernes Culturales Gallery and the Group W-10 presents Who Are We 3/12/10

Who We Are takes aim at the pervasive influence of the mass media in our everyday lives. In an attempt to mold our tastes, behavior, and even points of view, the media works diligently to create a standardization in the masses that will negate any attempt at transgression or even
healthy debate. W-10 challenges the media’s diligence through the use of satire in soft-sculpture, installations, photography, video, etc.

ART ENCOUNTERS INTERSTICES BETWEEN LITERATURE, FILM AND GRAPHIC DESIGN stands on a sort of ritournelle where diverse creators visit and revisit a unique topic, becoming the show a tribute and a rereading of human ontological problematic questions.
The exhibition -which is part of the project Gráfica Latinoamericana 20/21- relies on masterpieces of the literature and cinema, now interpreted by the graphic design. The selected posters highlight by their conceptual rigor and the interplay with the clever metaphor and the ellipsis that incite the viewer to rebuild here and there, transforming the perceptive process into a ludic and vivid experience.
At the same time, the show pays tribute to the Latin American graphic design tradition, including a selection of artworks made by iconic artists which contributions are milestones of the poster history in the region.

Cremata Gallery is pleased to present the solo exhibition of Cuban painter Hernan Garcia this Friday, February 5th, 2010 from 7:00 to 10:00 p.m. De Kooning said, ” There is a moment in life when on takes a walk in his or her own landscapes and scenes”, when one plays his or her own games without fear, with great honesty, with great certainty.
Before establishing himself between Madrid, Spain and Miami, Hernan Garcia resided for many years in San Juan, Puerto Rico, where he created hundreds of his phenomenal pieces, earning the respect of the critics and of the lovers of the visual arts. In 1990 he received the most important prize of the San Juan XI Biennial of Latin American and Caribbean Engraving – one of the most prestigious biennials of the world on engraving – with an impacting and beautiful monotype in which, intelligently and with great force, he combined the defining elements of his work.
Later there was a moment in which Hernan decided to make of the “chair” – that aesthetic object with so many artistic possibilities – the protagonist of his work: It was a tribute to those friends that allow us to rest, to think, to write, to dream and, of course, to draw and to paint. He created with the chair “landscapes” in which they could be seen as fascinating beings with fascinating stories. Sometimes they seemed actors in a range of different scenarios, whether “living” their tragedies or their comedies, but always revealing the brutal emptiness or loneliness that we are all called to live from time to time.
Hernan Garcia belongs to the artistic generation that followed the other of the Cuban artists that defined Modernism in Cuba: Ponce, Lam, Victor Manuel, Portocarrero, Amelia Pelaez, Carreño, Cundo Bermudez, Lopez Dirube, to mention only a few. He now returns as one of the most consequent voices of the Cuban “plastica” (after a necessary rest imposed by what Cesar Vallejo called ” the black heraldos”, those strong blows that life delivers to us).
We stand before a real poet of the human condition – in a Shakespearian sense – before someone who understands the human being and does not ever caricaturize it (which a superficial reading of his work might suggest to some), an artist who unveils the essence of being to us. We now stand before someone who has intensely lived – with pain and ecstasy – most of the XX century and some of the XXI.

Cremata Gallery presents “Abstractomicina”
An exhibition by Cuban artists, in which everything is possible!!!!
Friday, December 11th, 2009. 7:00 p.m.
Aldo Menéndez. “Abstractomicina”. Collage / paper. 7 1/2″ X 10 1/2″
Opening reception: Friday, December 11th, 2009. 7:00 p.m.
Location: Cremata Gallery. 1646 SW 8th Street. Miami, FL 33135
Dates: From November 30th, 2009 – January 30th, 2010
Admission: Free

Painters that have never experimented with abstraction, do so now. They have come together at Cremata Gallery for the show “Abstractomicina”, which includes 80 works in total. Forty-seven renowned contemporary artists present paintings specially completed for this exhibit, departing from their usual métier, while maintaining their personal style. In addition, ten sculptors, plus a selection of paintings by twenty-three masters never exhibited before, will help us remember, comprehend and appreciate the Havana of the 50’s.
An installation by Aldo Menendez submerges the observer in the construction of modern Havana, buildings that were raised up surrounded by scaffolding, which served as inspiration for the constructivist movement, and brings to mind the works of Mario Carreño, Jose Mijares and Hugo Consuegra.
Some say neo-abstraction is what is happening now …who knows!!! But what is clear is that the exhibit “Abstractomicina”, serves as an antidote for the excessive use or abuse of figuration, it’s refreshing and has no secondary effects.
Artists included in “Abstractomicina” are Gustavo Acosta, Ana Albertina, Julio Antonio, Jorge Arango, Néstor Arenas, Juan Asencio, Waldo Balart, Yovani Bauta, Mario Bencomo, Giovanni Bosch, Adriano Buergo, Luís Cabrera, Carlos Cárdenas, Alberto Jorge Carol, Ramón Carulla, Jorge P. Castaño, Humberto Castro, Hugo Consuegra, Salvador Corratge, Humberto C. Cruz, Arturo Cuenca, Liliam Cuenca, Sandu Darie, Agustín Fernández, Luís Manuel Fernández, Meme Ferre, Ivonne Ferrer, Joaquín Ferrer, Flora Fong, Marta Fonseca, Lia Galletti, Carlos García, Enrique “Gay” García, Fernando García, Mysora García, Florencio Gelabert, Julio Girona, Victor Gómez, Ernesto González Puig, Armando Guiller, Osvaldo Gutiérrez, Pedro Hernández, Carmen Herrera, Pepe Herrera, Guido Llinás, Nelida López, Rafael López Ramos, Carlos M. Luís, Nuncio Mainieri, Leonel Matheu, Julio Matilla, Aldo Menéndez, Aldo Damian Menéndez, José Mijares, Heriberto Mora, Glexis Novoa, Carmen Oña te, Pedro de Oraa, Sergio Payares, Angel Peña, Natacha Perdomo, Rosa María Pérez, Lourdes Porrata, Guillermo Portieles, Rene Portocarrero, Jesse Ríos, Enrique Riveron, Emilio Héctor Rodríguez, Eduardo Rubén, Rubén Ruiz Caballero, Baruj Salinas, Carlos Sanjurjo, Cesar Santos, Raúl Santoserpa, Lolo Soldevilla, Rafael Soriano, José Toñarely, Antonio Vidal and Manolo Vidal.

Javier Ruibal to perform at Kimbaracumbara 12/4/09

fundarte_javierruibal1
Have you ever felt your senses begin to cloud because of a poem or a melody? Have you ever felt the sensation of listening to a voice that takes over you? It is the result of a lifetime of hard work, years and years of struggle, of moving verses, a gift for the eyes and the ears, a gentle caress for the soul. Javier Ruibal has the power to engulf each new guilty party….. It is a crime to not know his music, to not have entered into his world of fusion, into his labyrinth of beautiful words…. With every strum of his guitar, with every lyric, he is able to take us into a world full of color, of “tobacco and Spanish wine,” a world with stories of prohibited love, a world of landscapes which seem to be created by the images of its own verses, a world of insatiable longings, of lost souls… His voice invites us to journey into his dreams, his rhythm fills the music lover with pleasure, and even the most stubborn of listeners are captured by what they hear and feel. He finds himself surrounded by the most happening of grooves, the most happening musicians, and in the top international stages, he is considered the most organic of artists in this world full of jealousy and betrayal. Journey into his music and allow his magic to engulf you. You will become one of many, but he will make you feel like you are the only one. There is room for you here, and you can expect to stay forever.

Cremata Gallery
The gallery is currently presenting the exhibition Diego de Souza + Luis Manuel Fernandez. A dialogue between the works of Diego de Souza and Luis Manuel Fernandez: one exhibition, two artists, one Argentine and one Cuban, two different ways of approaching art. Diego’s paintings, with his expressive use of color, light, transparency, and his free and imaginative strokes, comes very close to pure abstraction. In contrast with Luis Manuel’s sculptures: precise, figurative and full of symbolic realism. The exhibition is the dichotomy between two artists, but it’s also full of coincidences – both produce the type of work that we want to be surrounded with in our private and personal spaces: classy, ingenious, elegant. Come to the gallery this Cultural Friday’s evening to share a glass of wine and experience it all for yourself.

Direct from Havana Septeto Nacional Ignacio Piñeiro to perform in Miami 11/21/09

fundarte_posterseptetoresized_1
Septeto Nacional Ignacio Piñeiro in Concert!
Saturday, November 21st – 10:30 PM
at Hoy Como Ayer, 2212 SW Calle 8, Little Havana, Miami
Reservations: 305. 541.2631

Septeto Nacional Ignacio Piñeiro are paragon interpreters of son, Cuba’s national music genre par excellence. Decades before the Buena Vista Social Club, the septet performed the compositions of its namesake, transforming them into international standards of the son tradition.
Septeto Nacional, was formed in 1927 by the first superstar of Cuban son, Ignacio Piñeiro. Born and raised in the working class Havana neighborhood of Pueblo Nuevo, Piñeiro epitomized the urban sonero. He started out as a brilliant rumbero, and he was a well-known akpón or lead vocalist of the santería chant tradition.
A bassist, vocalist and composer, he composed Échale salsita, perhaps the best known son of all time, and the source, according to some, of the term salsa by which son’s successor was to be known. The tune tells the story about a night out on the town and the savoring of the finest sausage in the world; it was appropriated by George Gerschwin who worked its theme into his famous “Cuban Overture.”
Another of Piñeiro’s tunes, Suavecito, relates how delightful it is to dance son tenderly embracing one’s partner and confining one’s movements within the perimeter of a single floor tile. Its enchanting lyric, el son es lo más sublime para el alma divertir (son is the most sublime thing to entertain the soul), has become a mantra for son aficionados throughout the world. Among Piñeiro’s most popular opuses are Esas no son cubanas, Bardo, No juegues con los santos and Coco mai mai.
Many credit Piñeiro with being the first to introduce the trumpet to the traditional sexteto, thus creating the septeto format which endures to this day. He is also credited with making son music acceptable to all strata of Cuban society when he took Septeto Nacional to the World Exposition in Seville in 1928 where it created a sensation. Until then, son was the music of workers and peasants. Like jazz and tango, it was also the music most associated with houses of ill repute; it was even banned in Havana until the mid 1920’s. But the recognition son gained when Septeto Nacional visited the “Mother Country” was the seal of approval which paved the way for son to be played and danced at high society ballrooms and country clubs.
After Piñeiro’s death in 1968, the septet had a succession of leaders of renown, including guitarist/composer Rafael Ortiz, legendary rumbero Carlos Embale, and guitarist Richard Aymee Castro. In its current configuration, the Septeto Nacional is directed by bongo virtuoso Francisco Oropeza. Now more than eight decades after its founding, Septeto Nacional Ignacio Piñeiro is a national treasure interpreting a timeless repertoire to the delight of audiences and dancers throughout the world.

Diego uses his experiences in photograms and scenography to support the development of his painting. The expressive quality of his experiences and observations is translated to canvas in both an imaginative and an emotional way, his exuberance and passion are contagious. His brush strokes and visions are his own, an expression of his heritage, taste, and the people with whom he interacts.
Luis Manuel constructs visual emblems in bronze as realistic as the Giraldilla in a raft, “Hasta la Giraldilla se fue!” or the play on words brought to us in “Marea alta” and “Marea baja”. Unlike the formal poses of classical sculpture, larger bronzes tend to be relaxed, their uninhibited, languid bodies reclining comfortably or sitting in a chair. He expresses the meaning of “being alive” as a physical reality. An original in his own way, he never views another artist’s work as a template to follow.
Diego and Luis Manuel are mid-career artists in full creative maturity, with well-deserved professional recognition from many quarters, residing in collections from New York and Miami to South America and Paris. Diego comes from the prestigious National University of the Arts in Cuyo, Argentina. Luis Manuel is from Las Tunas, called the City of Sculpture, and graduated from the famous Cubanacan National School for the Arts in Havana, Cuba.

Cremata Gallery
“Cardo ni ortiga cultivo … ” the one-man show by Cuban artist Pepe Herrera presented at Cremata Gallery, is his “opera prima” in our city. He arrives preceded by his recent and very successful participation in two major exhibitions in Spain: “Entre rías…” reviewed extensively in El Nuevo Herald (July13th, 2009), inaugurated in the very center of Madrid’s art triangle next to the Prado Museum, and “La isla expandida” showcased at Huelva’s Museum of Art. Pepe Herrera is a master twice over: he enjoys international recognition as an outstanding figure of the celebrated 1980s Cuban generation, and at the same time, he is one of the best serigraphers of our time. His move to Barcelona 20 years ago and later to Madrid helped him become a major player in the European market. In his previous visit, he launched the first of a series of serigraphs of master Cundo B ermúdez carried out by him, edited by Cremata Gallery. Let this exhibition, full of mystery and subtlety, fill you with wonder as it explores an imaginary garden.

On October 23rd, 2009 Leal’s Gallery opens the solo exhibition “Mas Guajiro que Naiden” by Cuban artist Abel Quintero with a reception to meet and greet the artist. Quintero started his involvement with the arts at a very young age, when he began exhibiting around his country. Since then, his work is better known for its Cartoonish style and the exuberant imagery of Cuba’s rural landscapes. Throughout his lifetime career, his work has received several prizes and has been included in solo and group exhibitions in Spain, Italy, US, Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic.

About Leal’s Gallery
Leal’s Gallery is one of the newest additions to Calle 8 District. The space was introduced by father and son Nestor and Aleksejs Leal in February of this year, with the purpose of fulfilling their dream of exhibiting and promoting Cuban and Latin American Art, as well as providing framing services. The Leals, who have been avid art collectors for quite some time, decided to give a boost to their passion and created this space to consolidate their take on the Miami’s art community. They are offering the gallery to artists regardless of their style, technique or discipline in order to keep an open atmosphere that fosters creativity.

Annette Recommends Taqueria El Mexicano

This is the most authentic Mexican restaurant I have been to so far in Miami. The food is really, really good and you can enjoy it in a great atmosphere. Their prices are very good you can eat a very full meal under $10. The service was a little slow but when you take that first bite it was worth the wait.

They also have a little sales area that you can purchase spices, salsa and a varity of other stuff . This place is so cute, I will be going back for sure.

Annette Recommends Con Tutto Pizza a la Pala & Grill – UPDATE CLOSED

This place is awesome; we went there during the art walk which is the last Friday of every month, so much fun. The atmosphere and the staff were great and they had several people drumming in front of the restaurant just giving it that every touch. We ordered the paradilla for two…ribs, steak, sweetbread, sausage and blood sausage, everything was excellent!! We also ordered the potato salad to go with it and it was some of the best potato salad I have ever tasted. I highly recommend this place for the food, the service and the atmosphere. I will definitely be back!!

A Cuban Family within the tour cardinal points… looks for sponsorship.
Synopsis: Amalia, spiritualist old woman, has just become a widow. She lives in a small, last floor-apartment of an old building, with Cristobal, her 10 year-old grandson and with his younger son, Mayito, who is not at home most of the time. Amalia summons her sons in order to read their father’s Will. Her sons: Ricardo, revolutionary engineer, lives and works in a humble, small provincial town; Margarita, architect, lives in the United States where she has formed a family; and Mayito, bohemian musician and poet; they all live separate worlds. This reunion serves the brothers to settle some accounts of their lives.
Amalia, a faithful believer, falsifies the father’s legacy aiming at reconcilement. During a séance, calling the dead husband’s spirit, he speaks through Amalia’s grandson. Surprisingly, the spirit really speaks and reveals the existence of the legitimate document. When they all are about to read the Will in order to attack it, the grandson tears it up and throws the document out the window. Finally, he recovers the real Will and keeps it.

Cremata Gallery is pleased to announce the opening of its annual Summer Exhibition featuring various artists that have been with the gallery since its inception, and others that have joined us recently. The exhibition comprises 40 works including paintings, drawings and sculptures. The result is something uniquely eclectic and entirely contrary to delimited chronologies and rigorous themes. The joy of the Summer Exhibition always comes more from unexpected juxtapositions, not from the pairing of like with like, allowing the eye and imagination a rare freedom, not telling you what you ought to admire or notice.
The show opens at the gallery with a reception on Friday, July 10th at 7:30 p.m. It will run from July 1st to August 10th from Monday through Friday, 12:00 – 6:00 p.m. or by appointment. It is free and open to the public. All works are available for purchase.

MUSIC / MUSICA
Malena Burke (10:00 – 11:00 p.m.)
Malena was born in Havana, Cuba. She began her musical studies at various art schools when she was only 18 years old and graduated from the Amadeo Roldan Conservatory with diplomas in violin, guitar, and musical writing. Her singing career developed by coincidence. Malena received her initial proposal to perform at the anniversary of the Casino Parisien, at the Hotel National, Havana’s most distinguished hotel. She accepted and performed for the first time together with her mother, the legendary Cuban singer Elena Burke. The following year, she was selected to perform as headliner at the Tropicana, where continued as principal performer for five years. Then, she proceeded to perform at the most acclaimed nightclubs in Havana, including the Riviera, Havana Hilton and Capri showrooms. With her success also came demands for tours. Malena traveled to Argentina, Colombia, Mexico, Peru, Panama, Germany, Austria, Italy, Finland, Holland, and Venezuela, where she decided to stay in 1993. In Caracas, she performed continuously at many of the best places like EI Palacio del Mar, La Boite, The Seasons, and went to perform to other cities, including Valencia and Barquisimeto. ART / ARTE
Cremata Gallery
Cremata Gallery is pleased to present Argentinean Visions: from Modernism to Contemporary Aesthetics, an exhibition featuring an exciting collection of acrylics, oils, collages, inks, and watercolors, from the fifties to today. From Italo-Argentinean Modernist masters Bruno Venier and Carlo Monzani, who has exhibited at the Guggenheim Museum in NYC, to contemporary artists living in Argentina. We are presenting 17 artists with very different styles. Like US art, Argentine art has a strong flavor of the melting pot, that has lately been turning from European influences to its native resources. Many of the paintings and water colors in the show were inspired by the École de Paris, from staid academic works to surrealism. Others are more indigenous. Join us for this awaited summer show on Viernes Culturales, have a glass of wine and enjoy our exhibit. Exhibition runs through July 30th, 2009.

avant-garde-miami
June 26 at 7.00 pm at Alliance Française de Miami
Avant Garde Miami Group exhibit. Opening night with the young artists and Floyd The Rock Artist.

Daring to show a diverse trajectory of avant garde art, Floyd The Rock Artist invites these young, ground-breaking artists to join forces to show an explosion of artistic expression. The artists invited by the Alliance Francaise of Miami will present an array of riveting new artwork, ranging from beautiful figurative acrylic on canvas to exuberant abstracts, digital collage, photography, and metal sculpture.

Free admission
Visiting Hours: 9.00am until 8.00pm week days/ Fridays: 9.00am until 7.00pm/
Saturdays: 9.00am until 2.00PM

Floyd The Rock Artist –
Floyd is a pioneer in the Motion Art movement; he is the only artist of his kind who creates art with rock bands. The final product is a revolution on canvas fueled by the music’s energy and Floyd’s art. His art manages to span the commercial, artistic and street worlds. Performing live art, he says, has always felt natural, organic and gave him a voice. “I am an irreverent artist. I break rules in art and use a different form of expression without respect for established patterns in paintings.” -Floyd

He has performed with music greats such as Juanes, Ricardo Montaner and Miami’s own Guajiro. He has had several gallery exhibits in Miami, Coral Gables and Wynwood Design District as well as had his work auctioned off to benefit organizations such as The Miami Lighthouse for the Blind and La Ventana de los Cielos. Most recently his performances and art were featured at the Art Miami’s Bridge Art Fair and Green Art Fair in December 2008. In March 2009 he was invited by Irreversible Magazine to exhibit at Arte Americas at the Miami Beach Convention Center.
Gaby Guimarey –
Argentinean-born Gaby Guimarey is an established journalist, photographer and artist who rocks a career in TV and Radio. You can find her as the host of the popular show Puerta Astral on Mega TV and has had several art expositions in Argentina and Miami. This show will feature her modern, abstract acrylics on canvas that use a visual language of form and color to interpret the unexpected balance between nature and industry.
Clarissa Rodriguez –
Clarissa Rodriguez was born in Puerto Rico and is an abstract painter who paints modern, geometric figures on surprising mediums. A seasoned artist with various expositions under her belt she brings with her a fresh and new approach on abstract painting.
Rosabel Quevedo –
I view the art of photography as a subtractive process, a distilling of reality into a personal vision. As such I often use the tools of modern photography – different film stocks, filters, digital enhancement – to try to capture in an image the emotions I felt at the moment I tripped the camera’s shutter.
Aliett Kramer –
Her color has the unemphatic glow of a slow embrace, and the carefully calibrated horizontal bands drawn across the landscape in a colorful form of freedom and all the psychological assurance that measurement can bring no corners or end. The work is undemanding but right there, detached but full of feeling.
Antonia Wright –
Antonia Wright is a Miami born, Cuban-America artist, whose work employs photography, poetry, performance, installation, video art and the interaction between these forms. Her pieces are ‘social experiments’, highlighting the bizarre within the everyday façade of the ‘normal’. Much of her work investigates interpersonal connections to our surroundings and why we, both collectively and individually, do the things we do. She received an M.F.A. in poetry from the New School University and is a graduate from the International Center of Photography’s General Studies Program. Antonia’s work has been featured in numerous group shows including Amnesty International’s exposé on Cuban-American artists in Los Angeles. She is also the curator of the The Keys Project, an ongoing multi-city venture whose aim is to document and collect keys and portraits of their possessors.
Katia Jirasova –
Katia Jirasova was born in Lima, Peru with Czech, Italian and Peruvian grandparents. She attended a British high-school and later graduated with different degrees in American universities where she had contact with a variety of cultures. Here is when she learned to be a CITIZEN of the WORLD. Part of her life is using art to communicate a genuine LOVE and RESPECT for every member of humanity, independent from their race, religion, beliefs and lifestyles. “My only fear is the closed mindedness and disrespect by unenlightened beings towards the incomprehensible.”
Special Guests :
Manuel Millares –
Born in Havana, Cuba and exiled to the US in 1960, Manuel Millares has been a long time figure in the influential art scene in New York in the late 60s. He predominantly works with metal and has sculptures in Museums, public spaces as well as being acquired by private collectors.
Irreversible Magazine –
Irreversible Magazine is an International art project founded in 2005 by Norelkys (Noor) Blazekovic, to portray how in recent decades artists have progressively expanded the boundaries of art, as they have sought to engage in an increasingly pluralistic environment. The creating and understanding of art, are likewise no longer grounded in traditional aesthetics. In the early 20th century, Marcel Duchamp threw all traditional notions of the identity of the artist and of art into disarray and his Dada associates. In ironic mockery of the Renaissance tradition, which had placed the artist in an exalted authoritative position, Duchamp, as an artist, declared that anything the artist produces, is art. For the duration of the 20th century, this position has complicated and undermined how art is perceived but at the same time, it has fostered a broader, more inclusive assessment of art. Irreversible invites to explore the freedom of developing new models and instruments from everyday life, as Irreversible evolves in its efforts to become a creative medium for the better understanding of the complexities of our contemporary existence.

The town of Cognac is one of only three officially demarcated brandy regions in Europe; the others are the French town of Armagnac and the Spanish town of Jerez…

Alliance Française Thursday, June 4th, 2009. 6:00 p.m.
Cremata Gallery and Alliance Française, are pleased to present “Towards Paris!” a panoramic view of Cuban artists that at different times or due to different circumstances have called Paris home. The title comes from the answer given by Eduardo Abela to the question “…where, then, should I direct my steps?” The reply was not difficult, according to Abela: “Towards Paris!” He added, “everyone knows that since the beginning of the XIX Century French painting is the most important in the world.”
Cremata Gallery proposed the idea to Miami’s Alliance Française which immediately accepted the challenge. A working bond was created between Raul Cremata and Philippe Timon director of the Alliance. They joined efforts to advance this venture and offer their respective spaces to allow this unique narrative to unfold. A rich and varied compilation of paintings and sculptures includes works by Cuban leading artists of the last two centuries. Cremata Gallery is proud to present this distinguished selection of works for “Towards Paris!” entirely for sale.
In conjunction with the exhibit, we are offering two lectures with Aldo Menendez art critic, painter and curator of the show, and Carlos M. Luis poet and art critic, who has been intimately connected with French culture for many years.
Among the subjects to be discussed are the influence of France in Cuban art, how the French’s artistic vision leaves its mark on XIX Century art in the island, the specific weight of “Breton’s surrealism” on our avant-garde and post avant-garde, Paris like the Mecca, where many of Cuba’s most important works art have been produced.

“Parlez-vous français ?” Cabaret-Concert by French Artist Frederic STROUCK 5/1/09

“Parlez-vous français ?”
Cabaret-Concert by French Artist Frederic STROUCK
The incredible adventure of a French teacher who decided to go and live his american dream. The evolution of his teenage point of view make him face today’s US reality … The tone is very humoristic and the show is based on a recital of French tunes that became worldwide hits (My way, Beyond the sea, What now my love, where do I begin, …)

General Admission: $15 / $10 for members

Frédéric Strouck’s career has been far from typical. After studying science and armed with a passion for lighting design, he began by studying cinema in view of becoming a director of photography. Simultaneously, he taught himself the piano and started composing his first songs. Increasingly interested by the relationship between music and dramatic art and the use of music in film and opera, the works of composers including Stephen Sondheim and Claude-Michel Schönberg inevitably led him to what was to become a passion for musical theatre.

Encouraged by a friend and never having considered himself as a singer, Frédéric auditioned for the 1996 production of FAME, played the part of Nick Piazza and went on to perform in shows including: PIAF JE T’AIME, HAIR, the German production of LES MISERABLES and spent five years with Jerome Savary’s company at the Opera Comique. During this time, he continued his career as a composer, writing various jingles and theme-tunes and in 2000, was commissioned by Pascal Pistone to orchestrate his contemporary musical PETER. With co-author Grégory Blot-Rudolph, he began to write and their first musical LES 7 PECHES CAPTEAUX based on a concept of song parodies in a super-market, was performed at the Gymnase Marie Bell theatre, Paris in May 2004. Following interest from television companies, Frédéric and Gregory were soon invited to adapt the show into what became SOAPERETTE, a series of short musical programs that were to invent a new kind of “fictional-variety” show! Directed by Gilles Amado, the series was aired on FOX-Life, NRJ12 and PLUG-RTL in 2007 and 2008. Working as actor, author and musical director on the show not only furthered Frédéric’s already multi-facetted career but also led to him being asked to direct Marie Orlandi’s performance as Piaf at the Olympia Theatre, Paris in July 2007.

ART / ARTE
Cremata Gallery
The gallery presents an exhibition by artist Juan “Erman” Gonzalez, (Cuba, 1956) titled “Paraiso Fabricado”. A multi media artist whose series based, theme driven works are rooted in migration and informed by family. There is no celebration of freedom or The American Dream inherent in the forms. Instead, there’s an intentional study to analyze history, displacement, and trans- culture resulting from exile. The process is utilitarian and akin to traditional art forms like sewing and object making. Erman operates from a different ethos comparable to techniques of collage and assemblage long thought to echo and materialize remembrance. His works form part of the permanent collection of the Miami Art Museum and many private collections such as Carl and Toni Randolph’s and Craig Robbins’. He has been the invited guest lecturer of Edna Manley College in Jamaica, FIT in NYC and Colorado State University among others. Erman’s work has been exhibited widely throughout the Caribbean, Brazil and nationally, most recently at Lincoln Center in Colorado and Arteamericas in Miami Beach. Come to the gallery on Viernes Culturales to have a glass of wine, see his latest work and meet the artist. Exhibition runs through May 16th. Antonia Wright to Exhibit with Longtime Mentor the Legendary Clyde Butcher 4/17/09

The Nature of Things
Photography of Clyde Butcher and Antonia Wright
April 17th – May 29th, 2009
Opening Reception: Friday, April 17th, 2009 7 – 10pm
Renee Gallery 1331 SW 8th St, Miami, Fl 33155
clydewright
Artist Antonia Wright celebrates her Miami homecoming with a photography exhibition in conjunction with her longtime mentor, the legendary Clyde Butcher. Back from New York where she was living and studying, most recently at the International Center of Photography, Wright has teamed up with Butcher to present The Nature of Things, two divergent collections of landscape photography, opening Friday, April 17th at the Renee Gallery.

For Wright, exhibiting side by side with Butcher has brought her full circle. She began her photography career in the Everglades apprenticing for the conservation-landscape photographer. Her work has evolved to employ photography, poetry, performance, installation, and video art, using the interaction between these forms to question the world around her. Noted for The Keys Project, which examined the idea of ownership through the collecting and documenting of keys, The Nature of Things is Wright’s exploration and disruption of environment.

In her photographs, Wright documents a landscape changed by the introduction of the natural and unnatural: a body covered in grass, dirt or flowers lining a New York City Street. Using herself or another live model, Wright’s photos capture the immediacy of the performance together with the reactions of passers-by.

Wright’s vision of the natural world staging a bizarre invasion of the urban landscape contrasts sharply with the traditional, large-format, black-and-white landscape photography of Butcher. Renowned for his exquisite, beautiful images of remote and untouched landscapes, Butcher has been honored both as an artist and as a conservationist for contributing to public awareness of the environment, specifically the unique ecosystem of the Florida Everglades.

Together the work of Wright and Butcher describes a relationship with nature that is both contradictory and eerily similar. Wright’s bits of the natural world become oddities in the urban environment while Butcher’s isolated landscapes assume an exotic and alien appeal.
