Tri-Rail, South Florida’s premier commuter rail system, invites talented young singers, ages 5 to 17, to audition for the annual “South Florida’s Kids Got Talent” competition, to be held at the Museum of Discovery and Science (MODS) (401 SW 2nd Street, Fort Lauderdale). Auditions will take place from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, November 23, offering participants from Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach counties the chance to showcase their vocal abilities and compete for a spot in the 2025 final event.

Tri-Rail’s “South Florida’s Kids Got Talent” competition has become a signature event, uniting children and families across the region. All performers aged 5 to 17 that reside in South Florida are invited to audition. Each act will have up to four minutes to perform in front of a panel of judges who will select the finalists for the main competition in February 2025, during Tri-Rail’s 16th annual “Rail Fun Day,” presented by Herzog. Judges will score based on vocal range, stage presence, and style.

Over the years, “Rail Fun Day” has grown into a beloved community event in Dania Beach, featuring interactive activities, food trucks, cookie decorating, face painting, and more. Last year’s event saw ten-year-old Samantha Schmerling take home the grand prize with her vocal performance, earning her $500, a one-year contract inclusive of a photo shoot with composite cards courtesy of Posche Models & Talent, and a professional studio recording session with MikeSoperMusic.

To secure an audition slot, participants must register at https://bit.ly/SFKGT2024 on or before Tuesday, November 19.

American Heritage Schools [ahschool.com], the top-ranked PK3 through 12 college preparatory school in Florida, is proud to announce its annual “K-9 Cause: An Evening of Art” auction benefiting the Broward Sheriff’s Foundation’s Retired Canine Relief Fund, on Saturday, April 20.

Everyone loves dogs; however, police dogs, or K-9s, are a special breed. Instead of enjoying the pampered pet lifestyle, K-9s dedicate their entire lives to working daily to protect and serve citizens in our community along with their fearless handlers. They are considered law enforcement officers, whose duties include constant training, apprehending suspects, and searching for explosives, drugs, and missing persons.

When the K-9s retire, their law enforcement handlers graciously adopt them and continue to care for them, as these K-9s have become their friends for life. Recognizing that the medical and healthcare for these K-9s can get quite costly, the Broward Sheriff’s Foundation has established the Retired K-9 Healthcare Fund. This Fund pays for up to 50% of the wellness care costs for all retired K-9s from any local law enforcement agency in Broward County.

Inspired by a little boy’s passion for animals and art, American Heritage Schools is raising money to “fund this fund” by selling artistic renditions of these fine K-9s. Jackson Laurie, a sophomore at American Heritage Schools, and his parents Dr. Douglas Laurie and Nikki Laurie-Van Allen have partnered with the National Art Honor Society and the award-winning Fine Arts faculty at American Heritage to create artwork of these very K-9 being honored.

American Heritage Schools, Broward Campus, will be hosting a Silent Auction for these original works of art, as well as a limited supply of prints for sale at our K-9 Cause event. 100% of all funds raised from this event will benefit the Broward Sheriff Foundation’s Retired K-9 Relief Fund.

Miami Marlins outfielder Logan Morrison has officially launched his own philanthropic campaign entitled “Project LoMo.” In partnership with the American Lung Association (ALA), “Project LoMo” encourages youth to create their own charitable program or event to help their community become a better place and/or support a cause that is important to them. Inspired by the philanthropic work Morrison has done with the ALA over the past several years, the Marlins outfielder is using this campaign as a call-to-action for children to make a positive impact and difference in their communities.

“After my father lost his battle with lung cancer, I felt like it was my responsibility to do everything I could to raise awareness for the disease,” said Morrison. “With this campaign, I want kids to understand that they, too, can make a difference. I want to empower them to start thinking outside-of-the-box and realize that they can spark social change. Young fans who carry out a project will also generate contributions for the American Lung Association. It’s a great campaign and I’m excited to review all the submissions.”

Morrison will officially launch the campaign on Wednesday, May 1 at Miami Senior High School, where he and his mother will reveal the contest details to students at 2:45 PM ET.

Individuals or teams have until August 1, 2013 to complete their initiative and communicate (via video, e-mail, or letter) to Morrison what they accomplished and learned. Each authentic submission will receive an autographed photo, an officially-licensed t-shirt jersey, and will also result in a $100 donation to the American Lung Association on behalf of the LoMo Lung Fund.

Additionally, “Project LoMo” will recognize five individuals or teams who submit particularly compelling projects aligned with the goals of the campaign. Each leader and a guest from the five winning projects will receive a trip to Miami, all-access to a 2013 Marlins home game, the opportunity to throw out the ceremonial first pitch, a meet-and-greet with Morrison and some of his Marlins teammates, and participation in a group video with Morrison to promote the ALA. Winning project individuals/teams will also receive a $1,000 cash prize.

The “Project LoMo” campaign is Morrison’s second major initiative aimed at promoting awareness and raising money for lung cancer research. “LoMo Camp for a Cure,” Morrison’s annual fundraising baseball clinic, takes place in Delray Beach, FL every January. To date, Morrison has raised over $200,000 for the ALA. For more information on “Project LoMo” please visit http://projectlomo.mlblogs.com/.

Arthritis Foundation Held Annual Walk At Amelia Earhart Park

(Miami, Florida) – The Arthritis Foundation held their annual Miami-Dade Arthritis Walk at the Amelia Earhart Park in early November.  Hundreds gathered onsite to begin the customary walk that helps raise awareness to improve the lives of those suffering from arthritis or related diseases.  Monies raised at the event are placed in programs that facilitate information and preventive care to those individuals prone to develop the disease, and to other care programs that are developed to provide assistance to those who have already been diagnosed.

Among the honorees was Henry “Turlte” Thomas, Community Honorary Chair.  Thomas is the head coach of the FIU baseball team which was able to reach the NCAA Regionals two years in a row.  Coach Thomas very proudly accepted his title to increase community involvement at the Arthritis Walk.

Medical Honorary Chair, Jorge L.Orbay, M.D. is a board certified orthopedic surgeon specializing in hands and upper extremities.  Dr. Orbay has developed implant systems that have significantly improved the lives of his patients, and continues to make a remarkable difference through his Miami Hand and Upper Extremity Institute which provides specialized care, treatment, surgery and rehabilitation to arthritis patients.

Kiyah Hall was the Child Honoree.  Hall was diagnosed with Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis at the age of six.  Through the Arthritis Foundation, her family is optimistic that she will be able to lead a perfectly normal life.

Arthritis is the nation’s most common cause of disability with over 50 million men, women and children diagnosed.  The Arthritis Foundation organizes the nationwide Arthritis walk every year in an effort to continue raising awareness and be able to fund its fight against arthritis.

The walk featured live entertainment, refreshments, food stations, healthy activities, educational opportunities and a kid’s area for face painting, a petting zoo and pony rides.

Members of the Coral Gables Woman’s Club (CGWC) showed their support alongside President, Mireya Kilmon, who for many years has been battling arthritis.  CGWC was a bronze sponsor along with Dunkin Donuts, Interval International, Miami Party Entertainment, SeaFreight and Preferred Care Partners.

Saul & Theresa Esman Foundation was the Platinum sponsor, followed by Silver sponsors Goya, The Hand Institute, Kendall Pain Relief Center and Leon Medical Centers.

FIU also made an appearance with its students, alumni, sports teams and, one we could not have done without, Roary.

Jackie, a 17 year old Brooklyn high school student, has a secret to tell her parents. But, in confessing her one secret, it unleashes a string of confessions that can destroy her whole family. As the story unfolds, the characters are faced with moral conundrums that deal with abortion, racism and religion.

“This play deals with the fragility of belief systems, and the lengths a person is willing to go to as long as honesty is the foundation,” says Sirois.

David Michael Sirois was nominated for a 2011 Carbonell for “Best New Work” for his world premiere, Brothers Beckett, last season at The Alliance Theatre Lab.

Directed by Artistic Director Adalberto J. Acevedo, and starring ensemble member Mcley Lafrance, and featuring: Andy Quiroga, LaVonne Canfield and Breeza Zeller.

Photographs of UniverSoul Circus at Sun Life Stadium on 1/31/12

UniverSoul Circus at Sun Life Stadium on Tuesday, January, 31, 2012.  This is not your typical cirus.  They had dancing, music, contortionists, some slapstick acrobatics, and more, and of course some animals (would not be a circus without animals). I had such an awesome time singing, dancing and laughing. The big top is not too big, so that really every seat is good.  They do a really great job at getting the audience  to participate which makes it that much more fun.  UniverSoul Circus only runs through February 5th at Sun Life Staduim, so make sure not to miss it.

The Main Street Players is pleased to announce its upcoming production of Extremities by William Mastrosimone. This riveting, thought-provoking drama about a woman, Marjorie, who escapes her would-be rapist and then metes out her own justice has been intriguing and gripping audiences for twenty years, all the time demanding that we examine our own attitudes towards crime and the justice system. As Marjorie’s justice becomes more and more like revenge, the arrival of her two roommates forces all four people – rapist, victim, and bystanders – to examine where we draw the line between intent and action, and between what is justifiable and what is not. The play contains adult content and strong language, and parents are cautioned.

He has performed all over the world and participated in some of the most important Jazz festivals in America and Europe where he shared the stage with Herbie Hancock, Michael Brecker, Wynton Marsalis, Eldar, Marcus Miller and others. In 2006 he arranged and played on Ignacio Berroa’s new album Codes, also released by Blue Note Records and nominated for a GRAMMY. Recently Felipe worked as a producer in Arturo Sandoval’s album Rumba Palace, contributing arrangements and compositions, which won a GRAMMY in 2008. By the end of 2007 his first solo album, Dimensions, was released. This project incorporates his Afro-Cuban roots with strong influences of Jazz and Brazilian music.
