Guild at The Ladder Room Gallery 4/2/11

GUILD
April 2nd, 2011, 7 pm – 10 pm
The Ladder Room Gallery
6900 Biscayne Blvd.
Miami, FL 33138
guild-artists.com

A new group of eight artists, GUILD, will be having solo exhibitions at the Ladder Room Gallery, located at Biscayne Blvd. and 69th Street, in Miami’s MiMo district. Each exhibition will run approximately two weeks. The invitation with schedules is attached. The first opening is on Saturday, April 2nd.

As their group name suggests, GUILD places strong emphasis on craft and ideas. They recover concepts from various movements within Modernist art which beckon further exploration, while pursuing new horizons in painting.

I am sure you will enjoy being part of the emergence of this exciting new group in Miami’s cultural landscape.

Guild,
New Group Of Eight South Florida Artists
To Exhibit Works At The Ladder Room

In a bold move, The Ladder Room Art Gallery is dedicating the next four months to launching an eight-artist group that has recently emerged in South Florida. GUILD consists of painters who reconnect with art’s long-standing traditions, and gladly embrace concepts of originality and craftsmanship which have been derided by trends of the last couple of decades.

The painters of GUILD are: Abdiel Acosta, Frank Garaitonandia, Lu Gold, Todd Eliott Mansa, Yamel Molerio, Vincent Serritella, José Telot, and Jovan Karlo Villalba. All currently live in South Florida, except for Serritella who now lives in Oakland, CA. All of GUILD’s artists are Miamians and graduates from The New World School of the Arts, where many first met and established friendships and common cause, before going on to pursue degrees in fine arts at various universities. The group had gathered loosely and had begun exhibiting irregularly. However, it has recently formed into a focused association at the instigation of art critic and poet, Ricardo Pau-Llosa, who first encountered their work last December at a Little Havana exhibition space they had rented to show their work during Art Basel week. Pau-Llosa was taken by the group’s diversity, passion, and the high quality of their work. He is the curator of these exhibitions at The Ladder Room Art Gallery and wr
ote the essay which appears in the group’s first catalogue.

GUILD’s artists have defined their unifying ideas and mission in a ten-point statement, which is attached. The group is conscious of the irony implicit in their position as rebels who seek to move Art forward precisely by not abandoning craftsmanship, the cult of originality, and other traditions which are central to Western art, and last extolled in Modernism. As Pau-Llosa points out in his essay, GUILD is part of a broader generational awareness which he terms “Renewal Modernism” and which has taken a new look at ideas within this compendium of styles which are full of promise for future innovation. GUILD, Pau-Llosa affirms, is aware that the old linear narrative of stylistic novelty, derailed by Post-Modernist theorists and artists, has ironically led many younger artists back to Modernism itself to recover avenues of thought which the market-driven rush to new art had abandoned prematurely.

The schedule of GUILD exhibitions at The Ladder Room Art Gallery follows. All the openings will be on Saturday evenings, from 7-10 PM. Opening receptions are free, and the public is welcome.

Lu Gold, opens April 2, through April 14.
Todd Eliott Mansa, opens April 16, through April 28.
Group exhibition of works not included in the solo shows, opens April 30, through May 5.
Frank Garaitonandia, opens May 7, through May 19.
Jovan Karlo Villalba, opens May 21, through June 2.
Vincent Serritella, opens June 4, through June 16.
José Telot, opens June 18, through June 30.
Abdiel Acosta, opens July 2, through July 14.
Yamel Molerio, opens July 16, through July 28.

Curator: Ricardo Pau-Llosa
www.pau-llosa.com

GUILD is a group of individual artists who affirm:
1) that Art is Alive and well and always will be.
2) that Art thrives on the power of time-honored skills and the belief in the originality of the individual artist.
3) that the work of Art cannot be reduced to a message, and that while Art can broach any subject, it cannot help but be transcendent, ambiguous, and essentially enigmatic.
4) that Art which denies skill, originality, and ambiguity is just a one-line joke, a transparent screed, or yet another pathetic and anachronistic attempt to shock—but who?, we wonder.
5) that because Art is never about the individual artist—however confessional it might appear to be—the appreciation of its merits should always resist the cult of personality. The work of Art stands alone, as often the artist too must stand alone.
6) that the business of Art is a laudable and meritorious contributor to the artist’s wellbeing and the life of our culture, provided it is based on rewarding merit.
7) that as individuals and as artists we are indebted to the past—manifested in the history of Art as well as in the particular cultural legacies we have inherited and absorbed as individuals—but that we pay back that debt by making the past live in the transformative and innovative power of our work. We honor the past but do not live in it. We seek the new but are not slaves of novelty.
8) that Art without Ideas is worthless.
9) that life without Art results in slavery—to states, slogans, greed, and other symptoms of the refusal to reflect actively in the course of everyday existence.
10) that we capitalize the first letter of the word Art to honor its importance in our lives as artists and in the Western tradition to which we belong.

Upper Eastside Farmer’s Market at Biscayne Plaza 2/26/11

Terranova Launches Home Grown Farmers’ Market At Biscayne Plaza
Biscayne Plaza
561 NE 79th Street
More Info.

This seasonal market, taking place every Saturday from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM, beginning February 19, 2011 and ending May 28, 2011, will feature a variety of locally grown fresh produce, fresh tropical juices prepared on site, artisan breads, local honey, and some prepared foods.

The Upper Eastside Farmer’s Market at Biscayne Plaza will be held at the northeast lot of Biscayne Plaza Shopping Center closest to 81st street and Biscayne Blvd. Terranova is working with Urban Oasis Project, a local not-for-profit corporation and Urban Oasis Project Founder Melissa M. Contreras to produce the market.

“We expect this market to be a celebration of local food, real food without chemicals, made available to all people, regardless of economic and social barriers,” said Contreras. “We expect to attract both high income and low income customers, and expect this market to serve both. Farmers’ markets are a great equalizer, and rich and poor shop side-by-side, as our common denominator, food, brings us together. We expect to educate and inform the public regarding local food issues.”

The Upper Eastside Farmer’s Market at Biscayne Plaza is an environmentally-friendly market. The organizers encourage the use of recyclable or biodegradable disposables, and will collect vegetable scraps for compost to be used in the Urban Oasis gardens built in under-served areas. In addition, Urban Oasis will provide a $10 matching program for all users of EBT, per market day, in the form of tokens or immediate credit, to be spent on fresh fruits and vegetables.

The Upper Eastside Farmer’s Market is the latest project to be hosted by Terranova at Biscayne Plaza Shopping Center. On Thursday, February 3rd the Street Food Court at Biscayne Plaza food truck dinner series debuted featuring Miami’s top-rated mobile food vendors. Every Thursday the food trucks are parked in the northeast lot of Biscayne Plaza from 5:30 – 9:30 PM.

Located at 561 NE 79th Street, Biscayne Plaza serves as a lasting retail staple to the surrounding areas of Miami’s Upper Eastside. Built in 1953, it is known as Miami’s first major suburban shopping center, and lies just north of the historic Miami Modern District. Biscayne Plaza bridges a unique array of urban and suburban communities such as Miami Shores, Little Haiti, Belle Meade, and El Portal.

“The Upper Eastside Farmer’s Market and the Street Food Court at Biscayne Plaza are community-building initiatives aimed at helping to redevelop the upper eastside of Miami and to re-position Biscayne Plaza Shopping Center, once the neighborhood’s preeminent shopping destination, as a viable retail location,” said Kelliann McDonald, Terranova Marketing and Public Relations Manager. “We invite our upper eastside neighbors to come out, meet and mingle. We are looking forward to a thriving community event series.”

MiMo Art Gallery & Custom Framing, in collaboration with Men Nou Galerie, invites you to an exhibition of contemporary Haitian art and handcrafts
Opening reception: Saturday, January 29, 2011
Wine and cheese will be served at 4:00 p.m.
MiMo Art Custom Framing

Miami, FL 33138

From Saturday, January 29 through Monday, February 14, 2011

The exhibit will highlight post-earthquake art by select Haitian painters, sculptors and flag makers, and will also feature large-scale canvases by the renowned muralist Jerry Rosembert Mose. Among the prominent contemporary painters represented will be Maxan Jean-Louis, Magda and Ramphis Magloire – all well-known acolytes of the St. Soleil school of Haitian art. A group of younger artists from Jacmel will present their immediate response to the earthquake in the form of “rubble art” – a new medium of therapeutic and artistic expression that has already been featured in the New Yorker on-line and on Public Radio International (PRI).

Large-scale post-quake beaded flags depicting not only the horrors of the disaster but also the divine interventions of Haiti’s ancestral spirits to save lives during the event will also be a prominent part of the exhibit. Featured contemporary beaded textile artists will include Mireille Dlism, Evelyne Alcide, Roudy Azor and Nadine Fortilus.
Classic works by Wilson Bigaudv (Petit-Gove) and Louisiane St. Fleurant (Port-au-Prince/St. Soleil) will round out the collection of two-dimensional plastic arts. The next generation of Haitian artists will also be represented, through the works of Timoun Rezistans (“Children of Resistance”) – a collective of young artists from 8 to 18 years of age hailing from the slums of the destroyed capital, whose phantasmagoric cut-out appliqus from recycled tires are a fresh, new development on the Haitian art scene.
Finally, fine handcrafts produced since the quake by artisans struggling to survive amidst the rubble and under torn tents will be part of the exhibit, including works in bone, horn, wood, cut metal and recycled packaging materials.

MiMo Art caters to all of your art framing needs and offers very competitive prices. We are offering a 40 % discount on the frames until February 28, 2011.

The special dinner will be accompanied by live entertainment and include succulent dishes prepared by Chef Paul Suriel, perfectly harmonized with Soyka’s extensive and impressive wine list.

What’s sexier than a glass of sparkling rosé to get things started on Valentine’s Day? Absolutely nothing. Before the appetizers arrive, share the Cremant D’Alsace Brut Rosé, Lucien Albrecht with that special someone, ($11 a glass; $44 a bottle). Soyka’s masterfully prepared oysters taste great with a Grey Goose Martini, straight up with a twist, ($12). The Filet Mignon wrapped in bacon needs only a bottle of French Bordeaux to share – the Saint Emilion Grand Cru – Chateau La Croix Meunier, France 2006, ($60 a bottle). And for the finale, a Chocolate Soufflé paired with “Passion” Fragoli Wild Strawberry Liqueur and Prosecco, ($10 a glass) or Chocolate Amore Port, ($9 a glass).

SPECIAL GUEST
TERRY THOMPSON

Artaholics may have their ArtBasel Miami schedule planned out, but a comprehensive trip is not complete without a visit to The STATION at the News Lounge ArtBasel exhibition. Curator JP Rigaud assembled a fascinating group of mid-career artists that are reshaping the landscape of contemporary art. Adam Schrimmer will perform live paintings during the exhibition.

Claude Charlier is an artist born in Nancy, France. He knew at a very early age that photography and painting was going to be his life’s passion, though his studies remained on the classical arts; music and fine art in particular. After the usual first jobs, including working as a photographer for the French Governement, he was asked to come and work at Paris Match after doing a scoop of a jail revolution. At that time, he also started to collaborate with Shuji Terayama, writer and director of the Tenjo Sajiki and Suzuki Tadashi director of the Waseda Shogekijo, then co-wrote and directed “Laurence de Paris”. But soon, he realized that the theater world was not the perfect fit for him and he left Paris and London for Tokyo, and began a life that took him all over the world.
Apart from photography and painting, he also worked as an art director for 4 years creating international campaigns for majors Japanese companies, did a couple of morning shows for Japanese networks and helped in creating several magazines like Tokyo Journal, Vu and G magazine.

Claude has lived and worked in Japan, Europe, South East Asia and in the USA, where he currently resides. His work has appeared in of the world’s major publications, and his client list includes an impressive list of the world’s major corporations and publications. He has won back to back awards for best annual reports over a six year period, and received the Mercury Award for his work for Ricoh Company, Best advertising campaign for NEC twice, Best magazine add for Nikon Camera campaign, etc….
Several of his shows have been sponsored by Nikon, Pentax, and Ilford & Kodak. Claude Charlier is listed in both the “Dictionnaire des Photographes” and in the “Encyclopedie de la Photographie”.His works has also been purchased by several museums, including the Louvre, and by private collectors.

Adam Schrimmer: “Schrimmer, self taught, but formally trained at the Ringling School of Art & Design, is no stranger to Miami’s art scene. Adam has been submerged in its waves since 2003.Upon arriving, he joined the ranks of Diaspora Vibe Galleries’ residents and moved into the Bakehouse Art Complex as a resident artist, serving on their Board of Directors as their Artist Representative. During this time, Schrimmer’s work was commissioned by such Miami heavy weights as The Related Group, One Miami LLC, Adrienne Arsht Center, The Vagabond, Village Voice Media, Miami and Broward Palm Beach New Times and Harley Davidson. He has also taken part in several solo and group shows throughout the years at numerous national galleries and popular night spots like The Standard, The Vagabond, and Park West in Miami. Adam’s work consists of mostly black and white, charcoal drawings on a variety of surfaces. He feels the direct friction between his hands and his material creates the energy that pulses out,
onto the canvas. A humble artist, he is a force to be reckoned with. His portraits empower people to feel aggressive, powerful and sexy; to reveal their true colors. His work shows its form in the most raw and seductive way possible. This will be Schrimmer’s 4th Art Basel showing, his works collected both nationally and internationally.”

Terry Thompson: Part Visual Artist, DJ, producer, and modern day renaissance man. As a producer, this veteran dj hit the big leagues with his international smash hit “Shine” on the Defected UK label. His track was featured as a New Essential Tune on Pete Tong’s BBC Radio show in 2007. Also released during the WMC conference that same year and played by djs from all around the world. Terry is no stranger to Art Basel or Miami. He performed at various venues in South Beach over the last 5 years.

Terry is also a well-known visual artist. His second one-man exhibition, titled Party People (2007) in the Sub-Basement Art Gallery’s 20,000 square-foot massive space in Baltimore rocked. The show featured an array of works linked by expressive and mystical relationships between transient and communal party people. For example, Touched the Sky is a large-scale painting named after the popular underground dance track released this year by Dennis Ferrer. Much like the lyrics of the song, the painting captured the colors, rhythms and synergy on dance floors in New York, Miami, London, and Ibiza. Thompson paints mini grid-like windows filled with hieroglyphics figures. In each painting he creates his own language that on the surface resembles musical notes. However, when you look at them closely there is more to the story than meets the eye.

Other works shown were Shine, Rej, Milk and 2 Sugars, Chinkara, and Sosue. Most of the works represented a chic blend of cultures, spirits, and passionate grooves from the underground dance scene.

Terry Thompson was born in Chicago, IL. He is a self-taught artist and was an artist-in-residence for 3 years at Baltimore’s School 33 Art Center. Thompson has had various exhibitions including: Flash Art Museum, Trevi, Italy (1998), World Fine Art Gallery, New York, (1999), School 33 Art Center Bi-annual (1999, 2001) Maryland Art Place (2005), Artexpo 2005, New York (2005), Sub-basement Artist Gallery (2005,2007). He holds a Masters of Science in Administration from Central Michigan University.

JP Rigaud: For the last two decades this international dj has been rocking dance floors around the globe. The former resident of Nikki Beach for many years took his audience on a journey from chill-out, new jazz, broken beat to the sounds of deep, bossa, latin house and house.

Doruk Ozlen: DJ/Producer from Istanbul, Turkey. This multi-talented dj/producer is making big waves with his monster productions. His tracks are played all over the world. He is one of the most respected dj and producer on the scene today

Chilly: On the scene in Miami for many years, Chilly is without a doubt made a mark in dance music. “Just Chilly.” Chilly has spun, at a host of venues in Miami including Forge and the now-defunct Pearl. His Dolce Entertainment company has hosted some of the best parties in the city.

Terry Thompson: CodeRed/Defected in the House. Enough said.

Eleazar Delgado debuts Behind the Lights 11/27/10

Multimedia, Miami-Based Artist, Eleazar Delgado debuts his Miami-Inspired collection “Behind the Lights”
November 27, 7:00pm
Broadway Art & Framing
7226 Biscayne Boulevard Miami, FL 33138 | (305) 754-1773

Behind the Lights: Miami, a Narrative of Miami’s Story as Portals

Behind the Lights is the multimedia journey through different design disciplines. Architecture, design, and art unite to reveal the innate transparency of self in art. Created in Miami and inspired by the same, the prolific work of Eleazar Delgado’s Behind the Lights collection is a true mirror image of the beauty and complexity behind Miami’s history.

Born in Oklahoma, raised in Caracas, Venezuela, Eleazar has studied Architecture and Interior Design. Eleazar Delgado has gone back to his origins, his inner voice; epic painting was the earliest fascination. Behind the Lights explores the relationship between history and art, fully illustrating the story of those who fashioned the Miami we know today. Pulling from this range of discipline, he uses bold, bright colors, geometric patterns, as his epic oil paintings take on a kinetic, 3-dimensional life.

His work illuminates a story, using native symbols of plants, animals, landmarks and Miami’s visionaries who had the vision to see behind the wilderness. Their enthusiasm and courage inspired this collection. “Each subject chosen for this collection was a door to Miami’s development and enrichment,” says Delgado. “My work illuminates portals to expose the beautiful way color and light shape the relationship of Miami’s visionaries with the Magic City. In a second of abundant light your vision is impeded, causing you to squint. It is in that second glance that the story is revealed,” he continues.

Broadway Art is elated to present Eleazar’s debut collection Behind the Lights on Saturday, November 27th, 2010 at 7pm. Kenny Beck says, “As an artist and a gallery owner, I have never seen anyone approach a collection having Miami as a historical reference”. The work itself is remarkable and each piece tells a story of how Miami came to be.

Eleazar Delgado
A seasoned professional in the areas of architecture and interior design, US born, Venezuelan raised and Miami based Eleazar Delgado has taken his Miami inspired vision, applying his research of reading between the lines and seeing behind the lights to present oil paintings as a 3-dimensional story. Estimated new layout plan. I believe the …drums are a crucial part of my events. I started just from the admiration of the healing that comes from the drum. It brings people together. It is almost impossible for people to all show at 8 or 9 pm. So what I am deciding is that from the 8-11p it is time for drums, getting drinks, hanging out by the green bar, talking etc etc. From 11p til about 2a IS POETRY TIME!! We all come together as that room is filled with energy and great vibes from the drums…then the last hour we say our goodbyes share some laughter and go home to dream ♥ Hope everyone appreciates and respects this layout. I feel as if this has worked for the past W&W

Elusive Landscape at Legion Memorial Park 7/17/10

ELUSIVE LANDSCAPE: Legion Memorial Park
July 17, 2010, 8-10PM
Legion Memorial Park
6630 Biscayne Boulevard, Miami, FL 33138

“Elusive Landscape” will be presented at five public parks in Miami from June to October 2010. This work consists of multiple hand-crafted 16mm films depicting the forms and colors of natural landscapes projected directly into the landscapes themselves. These events will be free and open to the public.

“Elusive Landscape” promotes environmental awareness by celebrating Miami’s lush urban greenspaces and natural eco-systems. It connects the city’s diverse audiences and neighborhoods by engaging everyday people with an experience that is sensorial, magical, celebratory and rooted in nature, and by presenting similar events across the city so that it becomes a shared, unifying experience.

Artist Dinorah de Jesús Rodriguez brings to this project over 30 years’ experience in hand-crafted 16mm filmmaking, as well as a history of moving image installation, including several works which have included projections in the outdoors. Her work is exhibited internationally in film festivals, museums, galleries, independent venues and public spaces, and she has received numerous grants, fellowships and residency awards for her work.

Unique soundscapes for each site will be provided by composer and sound designer Ricardo Lastre, best recognized for his work with Las Negras Performance Ensemble, Lucia Aratanha, Giovanni Luquini Performance Troupe, Akropolis Acting Company and the late Jennylin Duany.

This project won Funding Arts Network’s 2009 FAN Knight New Work Award, an initiative of Funding Arts Network funded by the John S. And James L. Knight Foundation. The project has received additional support from Tigertail Productions, the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs, and Fundación Valparaíso in Almería, Spain.

Presented by Diaspora Vibe Cultural Arts Incubator.
