Standing on the shoulders of flute giants from worlds as diverse as Rampal & Galway in Classical Music; Richard Egues’ Cuban Charanga style; rocker Ian Anderson’s Jethro Tull; Herbie Mann and – most influential of all – Hubert Laws as pioneers of Jazz Flute, Latin Grammy Award winning Nestor Torres’ rhythmic and mellifluous flute sound remains apart in a class all by itself. His 14 recordings as a soloist; 4 Latin Grammy nominations, one Grammy nomination and one Latin Grammy Award; collaborations with diverse artists such as Gloria Estefan, Kenny Loggins, Dave Mathews, Herbie Hancock, Tito Puente, Michael Camilo, Paquito D’ Rivera and Arturo Sandoval; as well as performances with the Cleveland, Singapore, and New World Symphony Orchestras among many others, are testament to the remarkable journey of an Artist who continues to grow and enrich the lives of those who experience his talents.

“It is a rare occasion that I have to consult a Thesaurus to find enough superlatives to describe this flautists performance. I could say “incredible” and not be close. “Fantastic” an understatement. “Impressive” would have to be in headline type.”… Speaking of masters, Nestor Torres is a maestro, a professore, technically perfect, with a tone that is beyond belief; imagination and creativity pervade every solo.”

The Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) North Miami will present the exhibition “Tracing the Red Thread,” by distinguished South Florida-based artist Mira Lehr, Sept. 6 – Nov. 4, 2018. The multimedia, museum-wide installation will reflect Lehr’s eco-feminist philosophy, the concept of mankind working with nature rather than dominating over it. Lehr uses the classical myth of Ariadne to explore the beauty, fragility and interconnectedness of the endangered aquatic ecosystem of the South Florida coast.

In Lehr’s mesmerizing installation, two and three-dimensional works evoke dense thickets of mangroves, the dangerous beauty of jellyfish and the ethereal luminosity of the coral reef. Lehr creates a mysterious world whose seductive beauty reminds us not only of the gifts that nature gives us, but of the importance of preserving them for the future generations.

Comprised of a variety of multimedia works, “Tracing the Red Thread” focuses on climate change and environmental issues as a major factor facing mankind today. The exhibition draws on the lessons Lehr learned six decades ago working with Buckminster Fuller on his “World Game Project.” As Lehr learned in her work with Fuller, the earth must be seen as a unified island within the oceans so one is made aware of the interconnectedness of all life.

Admission to MOCA is $5, but free for MOCA members and North Miami residents. An artist reception will take place on Thursday, Sept. 13, with an admission cost of $10 to the general public, free to MOCA members and North Miami residents.

North Miami, Florida 33161

Cost: $10 to the general public, free to MOCA members and North Miami residents

The Museum of Contemporary Art North Miami (MOCA) will present the group exhibition “Monarchs: Brown and Native Contemporary Artists in the Path of the Butterfly” from May 24 – Aug. 5, 2018. Curated by Risa Puleo, the exhibition features the works of 37 artists who are native to the Americas separated into conceptual categories including indigenous, immigrant and assimilated.

The exhibition focuses on the monarch, the only butterfly that migrates in two directions, as a geographic range and a metaphor. Monarchs (specifically those of eastern North American) fly from southern Canada through the Midwest on their way to Michoacán, Mexico and back.

This survey of artists from or living in the path of the monarch, brings to life the Dakota Access Pipeline and the call to build a wall in Mexico as unrelenting issues that create challenges for people native to the Americas — being separated by conceptual categories of indigenous, immigrant, and assimilated.

Like the butterfly, which takes at least four generations to completely navigate its way through middle America with inherited knowledge, these artists also use inherited cultural memory to showcase and explore historical narratives of their respective heritage through abstract techniques.

Artists incorporate processes such as basket weaving, beadwork, copper hammering, and quilting, and materials such as stucco, plaster, ceramics, and feathers, that hold a high degree of resonance within native, immigrant, and brown aesthetics and vernacular cultures. The exhibition also charts the movement of styles and approaches through large spans of time across the Americas, speaking to an inherited means of production and genealogy of form.

William Cordova, a nationally respected Miami-based artist, is one of the artists featured in the exhibition. Other artists include Gina Adams, Carmen Argote, Natalie Ball, Margarita Cabrera, Juan William Chávez, Rafa Esparza, Nancy Friedemann-Sánchez, Guillermo Galindo, Jeffrey Gibson, Sky Hopinka, Donna Huanca, Truman Lowe, Ivan LOZANO, Cannupa Hanska Luger and Marty Two Bulls, Jr, Salvador Jiménez-Flores, Nicholas Galanin and Merritt Johnson, Rodolfo Marron III, Harold Mendez, Mark Menjivar, Ronny Quevedo, Gonzalo Reyes Rodriguez, Josh Rios andAnthony Romero, Guadalupe Rosales, Carlos Rosales-Silva, Francisco Souto, Rodrigo Valenzuela, Mary Valverde, Dyani White Hawk, Nathan Young, and Sarah Zapata.

After an extensive search, Sergio’s Cuban awarded the rights to Cuban Manna, LLC for Dade, Broward and Palm Beach Counties. The development group is led by operator Manny Rodriguez who was the first person to bring Domino’s Pizza and Baskin Robbins to Latin America. Mr. Rodriguez has partnered with Altis Cardinal’s principals Frank Guerra and AJ Suarez. Both AJ and Frank currently have over $1.5 billion dollars in real estate development throughout the United States and were excited to be part of launching the growth of Sergio’s Cuban.

Under CEO Carlos Gazitua’s vision, Sergio’s Cuban is breaking all the rules. The ethos behind his bold new concept? “A Fresh Take on Cuban.” Diners will queue up and customize the ingredients in their dish while overseeing the process. Ropa Vieja, Citrus Grilled Chicken, Organic Quinoa, Cauliflower Rice or Sergio’s award-winning Steak or Cuban Sandwich; there are no wrong answers as hungry patrons are emboldened to make the call. Sergio’s Cuban lives in a world of authentic yet unique (i.e. classic cafecito v. newly launched nitro café con leche on tap; or the traditional guava pastelitos and croquetas v. oven-baked empanadas of carne and maduros or vaca frita).

The new fast-casual concept has already opened in Florida International University, American Airlines Arena, Ft. Lauderdale Airport and will now be launching new locations throughout South Florida and beyond, beginning with North Miami—its first retail establishment.

Friday, February 23, from 8-9:15 PM: The Bobby Thomas Jr Quintet: Two-time Grammy Award nominee Robert “Bobby” Thomas Jr. has wowed audiences around the globe for more than three decades. Widely considered one of the most important percussionists in music history, his lightning-fast hands and percussive pyrotechnics prompted the great Joe Zawinul to bestow upon him the title of “Hand Drummer.”

After graduating from high school, Thomas studied at Miami-Dade Community College. During this time, he discovered jazz, and began to play with saxophonist Jet Nero at the Gold Dust lounge and other artists including Ira Sullivan, Billy Marcus, Zoot Sims, Thad Jones, Monty Alexander and Mel Lewis. In the late 70s, Thomas played at a benefit with Jaco Pastorius in Miami Springs. Soon afterward, Thomas auditioned with Joe Zawinul and Wayne Shorter’s jazz fusion group Weather Report at a live performance in New Haven, Connecticut.

Bobby played with Weather Report and its successor bands Weather Update, The Zawinul Syndicate, and Jaco Pastorius’ Word of Mouth Band. He has recorded and toured with the likes of Stan Getz, Ahmad Jamal, Monty Alexander, Sir Roland Hanna, Zoot Sims, Herbie Mann, Eddie Harris, Branford Marsalis, Ahmad Jamal, Junior Mance, Paul Desmond, Johnny James, Monty Alexander, Wes Montgomery, and Roberto Perera. World artists he has played with include sitar player Amitava Chatterjee, and African artist Vinx. Currently a core member of The Zawinul Legacy Band, Thomas has issued several solo CDs, on which he plays an eclectic mix of instruments including conga drums, wind instruments, guitar and the African bow harp. He also leads a new group, The Alien Brothers: 7th World, who are putting together a debut album soon to be released.

Yiddishkayt Initiative presents the South Florida Premiere of the highly acclaimed Joseph Papp Yiddish Theatre production Reflections of a Lost Poet Starring Avi Hoffman

MIAMI, FL – Renowned actor Avi Hoffman will star in the South Florida premiere of Reflections of A Lost Poet. Reflections will run at The Michael-Ann Russell Jewish Community Center’s (MAR-JCC) Cultural Arts Theatre (JCAT) from Wednesday, December 13 through Sunday, December 24, 2017.
Reflections of A Lost Poet will be performed in the original Yiddish language with both English and Spanish supertitles. Performances in Yiddish with English supertitles have proven to be a success, as with Mr. Hoffman’s Drama Desk nominated Off-Broadway performance of Willy Loman in Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman in Yiddish and Paula Vogel’s Indecent, seen last year on Broadway and on PBS, in which some of the dialog was in Yiddish.
Reflections of A Lost Poet, written by acclaimed playwright Miriam Hoffman, (who is also Avi’s mother and was recently inducted into the Bronx Jewish Hall of Fame), is a one-man tour de force following the life and times of Itzik Manger, considered one of the greatest Yiddish poets. The play is a serious, occasionally funny, monologue comprised of songs and poems, capturing Manger’s joy and anguish during the tumultuous years of Europe’s burgeoning Jewish culture, before it was decimated by WWII. The Megillah of Itzik Manger was the last musical performed on Broadway, entirely in Yiddish, in 1968.
“It will be one of my most meaningful performances, as it’s written by my mother and I’ll be speaking solely in Yiddish, which is the heart and soul of the great poet Itzik Manger’s work,” said Avi Hoffman. “For the past few years, my mother and I have reestablished the Joseph Papp Yiddish Theatre, which aims to keep the Yiddish culture alive. The fact that this show will be performed in Yiddish, with English and Spanish subtitles, is a step in helping us reach our goal.”

Join us for a FREE evening concert with Tito Puente Jr. and his Latin Jazz Ensemble in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month on Friday, September 15, 2017. Doors open at 7 PM and the concert begins at 8 PM.

The comparison is inevitable. How could it be otherwise? Tito Puente Jr. carries his father with him – imprinted on his physical being and locked in his soul. It’s in his looks, his joy, his music. No doubt, every time Tito Jr. walks on stage – he walks in his father’s footsteps.

He dances in celebration, throws his head back in pure joy and lights up the room with that oh-so-familiar smile. Tito Jr. is on a passionate mission. The younger Puente is determined to nurture the musical legacy left by his father. He refuses to let it become a distant memory; “He was just too vibrant, too exciting. There was magic in the music my father made. It made people happy, all over the world. My goal is to keep it alive, and in doing so, expose it to a whole new generation.”

Tito Jr. has found captive audiences who echo his passion. Crowds once lured to a venue by the father’s magic have returned to enjoy the son – participating once again in the high voltage celebration that takes place on stage.

Tito Jr. reveres the magnificent, lasting impact his father had on our musical lives. Audiences the world over agree there is nothing so perfect, pure or passionate than a tribute to a father from his son. “People who don’t know anything about Latin music know my father and people always, always smile when they say his name,” he confides. That is a very special gift, and it inspires and motivates me to bring his music to the world.”

There will be a cash bar and Latin food for sale. The Littman Theater is at 17011 NE 19th Ave in North Miami Beach. Tickets are FREE! Tickets are available at Parks and Rec or at the door; for more information, please call (305)948-2957 weekdays 8-5. Music courtesy of KCC Productions.

In Too Jewish?, Avi Hoffman combines music, comedy, impersonations and personal reminiscences to take audiences on a journey through his Jewish roots. The show also illustrates the traditions and history of his beloved Yiddish culture. In “Too Jewish?”, audiences throughout can identify with the humor and music of his upbringing. Jews and non-Jews alike, laugh and cry with Avi, as he takes them on a journey through history, relating stories of his family’s immigrant background and the culture within which he was raised. He has discovered the “lost treasures” of Jewish comedy and music. He has found the songs and routines that entertained hundreds of thousands of people from the Catskills to Miami Beach, from Carnegie Hall to the Yiddish Vaudeville.

The Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA), North Miami will open its fall season with the presentation of Edouard Duval-Carrié: Metamorphosis. The solo exhibition by Duval-Carrié, renowned Haitian-born American artist and Miami resident, will be on display Sept. 7–Nov. 5, 2017. This exhibition not only revises the artist’s work, but also introduces approximately 37 new creations, as well as a recreation of his studio in one of the gallery rooms.

Curated by Anthony Bogues, Ph.D. and Professor of Africana Studies at Brown University, Metamorphosis centers on the symbolic and cultural histories of Haiti and the Caribbean, interpreting colonial encounters and their consequences. Central to the changes in this time period were slave rebellions and the Haitian Revolution. Duval-Carrié’s artistic themes are many variations on the historic life of the region, blending his distinct aesthetic with the everyday, creating pieces that represent the Caribbean Diaspora experienced up through the present day.

Works in the exhibition reflect how the region’s flora and fauna were essential to the colonial experience, as seen in the work Red vs. Blue Skirmish. Other works include vignettes of a slave who transforms himself into various forms of animal life; boats transformed into containers of sugar; and disfigured human forms, heads and faces metamorphosing from their symmetrical shapes into things unknown. The Memory Series, mixed media pieces done in resin, reveals the artist as an extraordinary colorist, transforming some of his former artistic themes into a new artistic vision. The exhibition thus creates contemporary echoes of the historical colonial encounter and the construction of the New World, and considers its meanings for today.

“We are delighted to present the work of renowned artist Edouard Duval-Carrié at MOCA,” says Natasha Colebrook-Williams, MOCA’s interim director. “With Duval-Carrie’s extraordinary following, it is a pleasure to exhibit Metamorphosis, an exhibition with new works that have not been shown before. MOCA is proud of its international outlook and the unique exhibitions we share with our audience.”

Admission to MOCA is $5, but free for MOCA members and North Miami residents. An artist reception will take place from 7–9 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 14 with an admission cost of $10 for the general public and free to MOCA members and North Miami residents.

Karina Iglesias’ sound mirrors the diverse musical and cultural influences that have shaped her character and forged her individuality as an artist. With a style equally informed by rhythm & blues, boleros, gospel and hip-hop Karina delivers her performances with the intimacy of a deep soul crooner and the conviction and drive of a dauntless female singer/songwriter. Her emotionally charged and deeply personal lyrics revealed a depth of character and vulnerability that can only be conveyed when a singer truly connects with their song.

In 2013, Karina was selected to be a top contestant on NBC’s #1 TV Show “The Voice”. Her epic performance of “It’s a Man’s Man’s Man’s World” turned into a YouTube sensation overnight and every judge had glowing comments after her performances. Wth her highly-focused artistic vision, rich cultural background and proclivity for harnessing a wide range of production techniques, Karina Iglesias has showcased her strong elements of innovation and heralds a much-needed return to the authenticity of pure soul music.

“I felt like for the first time on the show, that possibly…, the light fixtures were just gonna explode, because [she is] a great singer and [she] really deserves to be here, so congratulations.”

Hernández, NMB Library manager. “Maya Angelou went without speaking for five years after a hideous abuse, later she arose and told her stories.” This exhibit will deliver a formidable message of strength, resiliency and resourcefulness that leads to triumph. It will elevate the spirit through the arts and resonate with those who are energized to tell their stories freely, those conflicted by the past, struggling in the present or someone who appreciates the challenges faced. We can all RISE above our circumstances and seek a life as intended, filled with hope, dreams and accomplishments for the future. Artistic expression is a healthy way to articulate our emotions. “Above all this event should inspire us to tell our stories that we may pass on the hope that has been placed in us.”

The Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami (MOCA) is delighted to announce this month’s musical performance by the Glyn Dryhurst Dixieland Jazz Band as part of the monthly Jazz at MOCA series. The Jazz Band’s name “Dixieland” is a name bestowed to the style of jazz performed by early New Orleans jazz musicians. This is one of the earliest styles of jazz music and the Glyn Dryhurst Dixieland Jazz Band is the leading band devoted to this genre of music. The style combines earlier brass band marches, French Quadrilles, beguine, ragtime, and similar styles to achieve this unique style of music.

While instrumentation and the size of the bands may vary, the “standard” band comprises a “front line” of trumpet, trombone, and clarinet; and the “rhythm section” of either guitar or banjo, string bass or tuba, or piano and drums. This intricate jazz sound of music is kept alive by a handful of dedicated bands.

The MOCA galleries will be open by donation from 7 – 10 pm.

They provide the perfect mix of the soulful Brazilian music style. The duo has been recognized as “Best Lounge Act” and Max as “Best Female Vocalist.”

Max is a fan favorite and has performed for enthusiastic crowds at Jazz at MOCA previously. She has become highly recognized in the Brazilian, Spanish and American communities. Max won the Brazilian Press Award for the “Best Female Brazilian Singer Residing and Performing in the USA” three times.

Ramatis has been performing professionally at local bars and nightclubs since the age of 12. He soon found himself as backup to some of the biggest names in Brazilian popular music including Johnny Alf, Roberto Menescal, and Pery Ribeiro among others. He has been living in Miami for the past 10 years and is considered one of today’s biggest Bossa Nova guitarists/bassists in the U.S. The public is invited to sit under the stars and enjoy the Brazilian jazz music from Rose Max and Ramatis.

Looking for a new home this summer? We Florida Financial wants to help consumers save time and money with its free Home Buyers Summer Seminar Series. Gain the knowledge and confidence to make the best home buying decisions for you and your family by attending one of the free seminars taking place on June 11 in Lauderdale Lakes, June 21 at the Biscayne branch, June 25 in Lauderhill and July 20 at the North Miami branch.

According to statistics compiled by the website mymovingreviews.com, summer is a popular time to move because of preferable weather. It’s a great time for families to explore neighborhoods and make friends before the school year starts. Plus, many sellers who haven’t sold homes put on the market in spring are willing to sell for less during the summer. Over half of all moves (61.5%) in 2015 were made during the months of May through September with the busiest day in the moving industry being July 31. The state of Florida also ranked as number two in the nation for the highest number of local moves.

“Now is the time to buy before interest rates rise and We Florida Financial credit union services wants to help consumers save time and money for this important life purchase,” said Lloyd Gill, president and CEO of We Florida Financial. “We Florida Financial has mortgage programs for the modern buyer with low rates, affordable monthly payments and no Florida intangible tax. We encourage South Florida residents to attend one of our free Home Buyers Summer Seminars to get the most out of their home-buying experience.”

The Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA), North Miami will launch its Summer season with the presentation of Intersectionality, a collection of works produced by approximately 50 South Florida artists as well as key artists who are based outside South Florida.

The exhibition addresses the multiplicity of social phenomena that intersect the body, including racism, sexism, homophobia and classism.

The exhibition will be on display from June 16 to August 14, 2016. The artists’ reception will be held Thursday, June 23, 7-9 pm and is open to the community.

The concept of “intersectionality” was developed in the early 1960s when depicting the experiences of African American women who were repeatedly excluded from bourgeois feminist discourse. The term was popularized by the legal scholar Kimberlé Crenshaw in 1989 and was predominantly used to illustrate the interconnectedness of oppressive institutions that are unable to be examined separately.

“With this exhibition we are highlighting two areas on which MOCA has focused: cutting-edge material and South Florida artists,” MOCA’s Interim Director Natasha Colebrook-Williams said. “We are proud to provide a platform for both emerging and established local artists through unique pieces and installations created for this exhibition. Conversely, MOCA is equally proud of the diversity of outlooks it is able to present with support from local artists.”

The Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami or MOCA will host an artists’ reception for the new multi-artist exhibition, Intersectionality. Intersectionality will feature art by approximately 50 South Florida artists, as well as artists from outside the region, and will explore the multiplicity of social phenomena that intersect the body, including racism, sexism, homophobia and classism.

The concept was first derived by legal scholar Kimberlé Crenshaw in the early 1960s to illustrate the experiences of African American women who were perpetually prohibited from bourgeois feminist discourse. Intersectionality’s illustration of the correlation of oppressive institutions that are unable to be observed separately now serves as the inspiration behind the exhibition.

The artists’ reception will be open from 7-9 pm and will provide the opportunity for visitors to be immersed in the cultural diversity of an exhibition that is based on a lived experience.

MOCA members and residents of North Miami enjoy free admission. Other visitors pay an admission of $10

Jazz at MOCA presents the Jean Caze Sextet May 27, in honor of Haitian Flag Day. The FREE concert runs from 8:00-9:15 PM at 770 NE 125th Street, North Miami. Featured with Jean are Vaughn Henry – keys, Ivan Malespin – trombone, Josh Allen – bass, David Chiverton – drums, and Harvel Nakundi – percussion. info at mocanomi.org or 305-893-6211. Curated by KCC Productions.

Winner of the 2006 International Trumpet Guild Jazz Competition, and the 2004 National Trumpet Jazz Competition, Jean Caze has emerged as one of today’s most exciting new voices in jazz. At the age of twenty-seven Jean has performed with the likes of Herbie Hancock, Najee, Arturo Sandoval, Roberta Flack, Al Jarreau, and George Duke, to name a few. Jean also played with the legendary rock group “Chicago” live on NBC (while in high school), and has opened for the Wynton Marsalis Quartet. Most recently, the Haitian-born trumpeter won second place in the 2007 Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition. Jean has received abundant praise from critics, peers and jazz enthusiasts alike who have taken to Jean’s lyrical tone and tasteful ideas. He has been hailed a “true improviser” and even compared to Miles Davis by fellow trumpet player Carl Saunders. Though his roots are solidly planted in jazz, Jean can flawlessly switch between genres. Having already released one CD, “Miami Jazz Scene,” he is currently working on completing his second.

“Strong, and unexpectedly diverse, Mr. Caze confidently evokes Miles Davis.”

Jazz at MOCA presents soul legend Timmy Thomas and the Overtown Soul Review, with special guest vocalist Cina Jones, in a FREE performance March 26 from 8 to 9:15 PM at the Museum of Contemporary Art, 770 NE 125th St., North Miami.

Lightning Has Struck Twice. Soul Legend Timmy Thomas, who serenaded the world in 1973 with his million-selling smash “Why Can’t We Live Together,” has conquered the world again. Thanks to Drake’s beyond-obvious sample of “Why Can’t We Live Together” in his monster worldwide hit “Hotline Bling,” the world is dancing yet again to Timmy Thomas’ groove. 2016 will find Timmy Thomas releasing a string of singles on Overtown Records and one on Saustex Media, prior to his comeback album. His collaborators range from the late Steve Jobs to Timmy’s old hitmaking crew at TK records. They were recorded in the manner Soul Music deserves: Living and Breathing on analog tape – so it may be released on vinyl. Timmy Thomas famously sang “People Are Changing” on his first LP. The people may have changed, but their love of his soulful groove remains the same.

“Timmy’s song [’Why Can’t We Live Together’] resonates now more than ever-ever,” says NPR. For more information visit mocanomi.org or call 305-332-2623. Music program is curated by KCC Productions.
