Neil deGrasse Tyson is an astrophysicist and the author of the No. 1 best seller Astrophysics for People in a Hurry, among other books. He is the director of the Hayden Planetarium at the American Museum of Natural History, where he has served since 1996. Dr. Tyson is also the host and co-founder of the Emmy-nominated podcast StarTalk and its spinoff StarTalk Sports Edition, which combine science, humor and pop culture. He is a recipient of 21 honorary doctorates, the Public Welfare Medal from the National Academy of Sciences and the Distinguished Public Service Medal from NASA. Asteroid 13123 Tyson is named in his honor.

Dr. Tyson will be in conversation with Dr. Doug Roberts, vice president, science education and director of the Frost Planetarium at the Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science and introduced by Mitchell Kaplan.
His new book, Starry Messenger: Cosmic Perspectives on Civilization, will be published in September. The purchase of each full-price ticket includes a copy of the book.

MOCA is celebrating National Hispanic Heritage Month by reading “Where Are You From?” written by Yamile Saied Méndez and illustrated by Jaime Kim. When a girl is asked where she’s from, where she’s really from, none of her answers seems to be the right one until she asks her loving Abuelo for help. After the reading, participants are invited to create their own watercolor paintings of where they are from. Sponsored by the North Miami Community Redevelopment Agency, this early childhood art series engages toddlers and fosters reading, motor skill development and socialization. House of Horror Haunted Carnival (HOH) has been scaring the living daylights out of the so-called unafraid. With four new haunted house experiences, a midway filled with unlimited carnival rides, food, and games, caretakers also vow to spook unsuspecting victims with every turn on their new Fireball Rollercoaster.

Beginning September 29 at 6PM, people can take their chances working their way through four terrifyingly, haunted experiences inside an abandoned department store at Miami International Mall. The following haunted experiences have been completely re-done to maximize their scare factor:

• The Silent Mall – Shhh….This is where Misshhhell will unleash her own level of “hell”. Try and stay quiet, if you dare.
• DrownTown – The undead are overflowing at this abandoned town seeking their revenge. Be quick about it, or risk becoming a permanent resident.
• Insanitorium – If by now your nerves are shot, don’t worry. Former patients have taken over the treatment of nervous breakdowns. Do check in. No health insurance required.
• Scare X Studios – Cleared of “almost” all paranormal activity, this immersive experience is where gaming and imagination takes center stage.

For 20 years, Miami International Mall has served as the ideal spot for this spooky, month-long adventure. Those fun-filled nights only get better on the HOH midway where a ticket to the haunted experiences also gives family and friends access to unlimited carnival rides and games. It’s also where overindulgence is highly encouraged given the large assortment of treats and carnival foods. Just be sure to rally enough courage to ride The Fireball Rollercoaster, which is a first this year.

Tickets are currently on sale for House of Horror Haunted Carnival at Miami International Mall. Doors open on September 29 and remain open every Tuesday through Sunday, all the way to Monday, October 31. HOH plans to incorporate special themed nights, including an adult Costume Contest on Halloween night, so be sure to follow them on social media for those drop dates!

The Friends of Jack & Jill Center – a support group of volunteers committed to developing community awareness, fundraising and program assistance for Jack & Jill Center’s children and their families – is excited to host the 21st Annual Power Lunch at the Global Grille at First Baptist on Thursday, Sept. 29, at 11:30 a.m. The event pays tribute to special and outstanding honorees in the South Florida community who helped The Friends of Jack & Jill Center raise over $5 million for high-need children and families in the South Florida community since its inception in 1999.

The 21st Annual Power Lunch is anticipated to be attended by over 250 business professionals in Broward County. David Lawrence Jr., founder of The Children’s Movement of Florida and former publisher of the Miami Herald will serve as the event’s guest speaker and Neki Mohan, the vice president of Visit Lauderdale, will serve as the Master of Ceremonies.

In recognition of their dedication to Jack & Jill Center, the luncheon will honor United Way of Broward County ReadingPals as the volunteer honoree, the Leslie L. Alexander Foundation as the foundation honoree and Valley Bank as the corporate honoree. These awards are bestowed to those who have gone above and beyond through their contributions and service to Jack & Jill Center.

The proceeds from the event will benefit Jack & Jill Center’s mission to strengthen children and families through innovative education, supportive programming and community engagement. Jack & Jill Center supports children of high-need working families through quality early childhood education, elementary education and family strengthening programs to ensure every child and family has the tools they need to be successful. Jack & Jill Center has served 26,000 children and families in South Florida since 1942.

Kicking off Labor Day Weekend on Friday, September 2, “Bottoms Up” R&B singer Trey Songz will be hosting an intimate yet high-energy performance at Bottled Blonde Miami.

In an effort to educate voters and encourage them to register to vote, CityPlace Doral has partnered with Univision and UnidosUS to host voter registration drives. The non-partisan voter registration drives will take place at CityPlace Doral’s fountain plaza on select Saturdays and Sundays in Aug., Sept. and Oct. ahead of the Nov. 8 election. The deadline to register to vote in the General Election is Oct. 11.

MOCA is celebrating National Hispanic Heritage Month by spotlighting artist Frida Kahlo who is known for her many portraits, self-portraits and works inspired by the nature and artifacts of Mexico. In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, History Fort Lauderdale, celebrating 60 years of being the proud steward of our community’s past by making our heritage accessible and engaging to residents and visitors, will present “Viva Fort Lauderdale: Celebrating Hispanic Art & Culture” from Sunday, September 18 through Sunday, October 2. This first-ever fine art exhibit solely celebrating the contributions of our multicultural Latin community will feature work from local artists including Leonardo Montoya (Colombia), Lifrancis Rojas (Venezuela), Isabel Perez Salazar (Venezuela), Florencia Clement de Grandprey (Spain), Hernan Rodriguez (Cuba) and others. The exhibit will open with an artist group meet and greet reception at noon on September 18 at the New River Inn (231 Southwest Second Avenue).

All of the works will be exhibited in a newly renovated art space on the first level of the New River Inn.

Entry to the exhibit is free with general admission – $15 for adults; $12 for seniors and $7 for students (through age 22 with a valid student ID). In addition to “Viva Fort Lauderdale: Celebrating Hispanic Art & Culture,” History Fort Lauderdale is proud to host a variety of engaging multicultural experiences, year-round. Permanent exhibits include “From Dugouts to Dream Yachts,” a visual narrative weaving the story of the ever-changing use of Fort Lauderdale’s waterways by following the strokes of the first people to today’s sightseers, “The Bryans of Fort Lauderdale” which allows visitors to experience the story of the City of Fort Lauderdale as told through the pioneer family that shaped its development from an agricultural outpost in 1896 to a bustling city in the 1920s to its current status as a leading Metropolis, “Juliette Lange: A Portrait of a Mezzo Soprano,” a fashion and lifestyle glimpse of the socially prominent Fort Lauderdale resident with a lauded career as a star vocalist of musical comedy, plus “Archaeology of the New River” and a multitude of stories and photos sharing the history of other founding families of Fort Lauderdale. The nonprofit museum also hosts an artists’ collective collaborative space.

History Fort Lauderdale is open seven days a week from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. with docent guided tours, daily, at 1, 2 and 3 p.m. Group walking tours are available upon special request. South Florida Symphony Orchestra (SFSO), now in its 25th anniversary season, is seeking choral singers 15 years and older of all vocal ranges to participate in its upcoming 2022-23 season chorus performances of Handel’s Messiah and Bruckner’s Te Deum. The open call will take place on Tuesday, September 13 and Tuesday, September 20, from 7 to 9 p.m., at the Center for Spiritual Living Fort Lauderdale (4849 North Dixie Hwy. in Oakland Park). Rehearsals are weekly, on Tuesdays from 7 to 9 p.m.

The South Florida Symphony Chorus will perform holiday favorite Handel’s Messiah on December 3 at 7:30 p.m. at The Parker in Fort Lauderdale and on December 4 at 4 p.m. at Broad Center at Barry University (dress rehearsals: December 2, from 5 – 8 p.m., and December 4, from 1 – 3 p.m., at Barry University and December 3, from 4 – 6 p.m., at The Parker).

Bruckner’s majestic Te Deum will be performed on April 26, at 7:30 p.m., at The Parker (dress rehearsals: April 25, from 4 – 8 p.m., and April 26, from 4:30 – 6:30 p.m.).

Taking place from Wednesday, October 19 through Saturday, October 22, the four-day festival is a curated culinary showcase that couples South Florida’s bounty of seafood with the region’s most notable chefs and restaurants. The South Beach Seafood Festival consists of four separate ticketed events taking place throughout the week. The festival begins on Wednesday, October 19th with “An Evening at Joe’s Stone Crab.” Next up, “Crabs, Slabs & Cabs,” takes place the following evening and offers a formal sit-down, five-course dinner highlighting ‘Surf n’ Turf’ reimagined by some of the Magic City’s leading chefs. The event is hosted by GOYA Foods’ Executive Chef Fernando Desa and includes participation from celebrated restaurateur and Pubbelly Sushi partner José Mendín; Fiola Miami’s Executive Chef Danny Ganem; and Meat Market Executive Chef and Owner Sean Brasel, among others. On Friday evening, the gloves come off as 16 of Miami’s top chefs go head-to-head in eight competitive seafood rounds during the annually sold out “Chef Showdown,” coined the ultimate beach bash on South Beach. To commemorate the festival’s 10-year anniversary, one participating chef with the most points of the night will take home a grand prize of $10,000. The series of nightly events builds up to the main celebration, the “South Beach Seafood Festival,” an all-day affair taking place on Saturday, October 22, showcasing a selection of pop-up-cafés by prominent South Florida restaurants, complimentary open bar stations, and packed with live musical performances, interactive experiences, and much more for guests to enjoy.

About Women in Labor
Women in Labor is a generative sound art composition that uses data sonification to demonstrate the effect of the changing laws around access to safe and legal abortion. Through computational algorithms, the piece sonifies the increase in mileage a woman will now have to travel to access care. Partnering with midwives, the artist has been collecting the sounds women make during labor starting with her own home birth experience in 2015.

Self-portrait of La Tonada is a poetic, graphical and musical journey of the music of the iconic Venezuelan artist, Simón Díaz, and an exploration of one of the essential genres of Venezuelan traditional music: the tonada. A wonderful experience where Bettsimar Díaz will introduce the audience to this unique musical style, Eduardo Sanabria (Edo) will be transforming words into images live, and Nexus Dúo, comprised of Héctor Molina and Yaritzy Cabrera, will interpret the most memorable melodies of the great Simón Díaz.

Fort Lauderdale Gay Men’s Chorus (FTLGMC) will present “Life is a Cabaret” on Saturday, September 10, at 8 p.m. at United Church of Christ (2501 NE 30th Street in Fort Lauderdale). The special concert will include a sentimental selection of favorite Broadway tunes and popular standards with live musical instrumentation.

“Life is a Cabaret” concert selections will include music from beloved Broadway shows such as Oliver, Pippin and Ragtime. Other music will be from all-time favorites made popular by Bette Milder, Martin Mull and Ethel Merman. Some special solos, duets and trios are being planned to create a memorable show.

General admission tickets for Life is a Cabaret are $30, $40 for the first 5 rows and $50 for priority seating at cocktail round tables closest to the stage, plus a small service fee. Tickets are available online at FTLGMC.org by calling (954) 832-0060.

Christo and his wife and artistic collaborator Jeanne-Claude made an inestimable impact on the history of art since the mid-20th century. This exhibition presents fine examples of Christo’s drawing practice, which constitutes a pivotal aspect of his production. Collectively, the drawings exemplify an expansive overview of Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s oeuvre, comprising their major projects spanning from the late 1960s to the early 2000s.

Get ready to indulge! Taste at the Track returns to Gulfstream Park this summer with a tantalizing array of food options between three different themed events. This fan favorite series combines the best of two worlds: food and drink and horse racing. Taking place in the third floor Flamingo Room overlooking the racetrack, guests can indulge in all-you-can-eat food and drink stations while taking in the excitement and energy of high stakes horse racing. The series includes Burgers & Brews on August 6; Tacos & Tequila on August 27 and BBQ & Bourbon on September 24. For both experienced bourbon drinkers and new enthusiasts, this event provides a great opportunity to taste and learn about some of the top labels including Amador, High West, Treaty Oak, Makers 46, Iron Smoke, Jim Beam and Jack Daniels. OutFit – an innovative mobile fitness service bringing convenient, affordable, expertly-led private training and group fitness classes to parks and neighborhoods – will host “Ladies Morning Out” at The City of Plantation’s Central Park on Aug. 13 at 7:15 a.m. Participants will endure a 50-minute heart pumping, muscle building, full body workout while enjoying the fresh air. After the class, participants will enjoy healthy snacks and beverages.

Led by “Outfitter in Charge” Michelle Correa, the signature full body HIIT (high intensity interval training) Strength Circuit targets strength and conditioning with intense efforts and short rest periods while utilizing a color training system that keeps individuals challenged. Participants will do multiple sets of each exercise that provide maximum strength benefits while short rest periods ensure some cardiovascular development. The class includes four training stations featuring two exercises each highlighting mobility, stability, strength, power, core and cardio movements. All rounds consist of eight sets with duration options of 40 seconds (green), an optional push of 10 seconds (yellow), and either 25 seconds or 15 seconds of rest (white). There is also a 60 second strength boost after the last set at each station.

Members who bring a friend to “Ladies Morning Out” who signs up for an OutFit membership will be awarded with an OutFit tank top and the friend will receive a 50% off their first month subscription.

The LOOP invites the community and their furry companions to the Movies by Moonlight “Dog Days of Summer” series on the fourth Friday of the month Aug. 26 and Sept. 23. Presented by the City of Fort Lauderdale Beach Improvement District (BID), the night of four-legged fun is hosted by the dynamic mom and pup duo, Ana and Teddy, behind the award-winning Instagram @TourwithTeddy and blog “Living A Fairytail.”

The Sandrell Rivers Theater is gearing up for its biggest community event of the year, its 5th annual Chief Sandrell Rivers Day Celebration. This year’s Chief Sandrell Rivers Humanitarian Award recipient is the late South Florida Musical Legend Brenda Alford. This year’s Sandrell Rivers Day Celebration will be an extra special affair, featuring an A-list talent roster including: Master of Ceremonies, Hot 105’s Rodney Baltimore, with performances by ICE Squad, Baddest Band in the Land Junkanoo, vocalist Lamont Whittaker, Sunshine Jazz Organization, and the Ladies of Simone.
The evening kicks off with a special cocktail hour at 6:00 PM with celebrity DJ Chico the Leo spinning hits in the lobby, where guests are welcome to enjoy the limited engagement Between Flowers and Havoc art exhibit by Guitars Over Guns. The event continues with a traditional libation, and oral histories honoring Chief Sandrell Rivers by members of the family as well as by the M Ensemble Company.

This exhibition is the first major retrospective exhibition of the work of Cuban artist Mariano Rodríguez (b. 1912, Havana; d. 1990, Havana) in the United States and spans almost six decades of artistic production. Join Style Saves, a Miami-based non-profit led by Rachael Russell Saiger and Isabela Rangel Grutman for their 12th Annual Back-To-School event at MANA Wynwood Convention Center benefiting underprivileged students and their families in our community. Style Saves is sourcing donations and volunteers in order to hit its goal of sending 15,000 students throughout South Florida back to school with necessities for the upcoming school year.

Volunteers are needed for setup days on Thursday, August 11 and Friday, August 12 from 10 am-5 pm in addition to the event days on Saturday, August 13 and Sunday, August 14 from 9 am – 5 pm.

Join WBHI Pink Walk 2022— 5K Run and Walk to Raise Funds and Help Beat the Odds of Breast Cancer

The Women’s Breast & Heart Initiative (WBHI) 6th Annual Pink Walk returns this year with its 5K Run and Walk hosted by Miami Dade College at the North Campus. Leading into Breast Cancer Awareness Month, this college-wide partnership for Pink Walk 2022 invites the community and their families to raise funds for breast cancer disease prevention and early detection.

Runners, walkers, and joggers can help transform and save lives, one step at a time, while supporting at risk women, college students and low-income populations with the resources necessary to help beat the odds of breast cancer.

Supporters of the WBHI 6th Annual Pink Walk can also participate virtually in the 5K Run and Walk around their neighborhood, or at the park, beach, or other convenient outdoor location.

All participants are also empowered to play an active role in helping to transform and save lives by setting up a personal fundraising page. Special swag will be awarded when participants raise $50, $100, and more, helping WBHI get to its $100,000 goal.

Anemoia is a song-based, groove-centered Trio comprised of Armando Lopez, Andres Ferret, and Aaron Lebos. The band was born through improvisations caught on voice notes, then later transcribed into recorded song. Their self-titled debut record was released just weeks before the global pandemic. During the pandemic, the band used the time to start and finish their sophomore album “Lost the Plot”. The band in their first year has been lucky to have performed several exciting shows including a sold-out album release show (official ground up preparty), NuDeco Ensemble’s live-streamed collaborative suite of the band’s original music, and opening for legends John Medeski, Skerik, and Stanton Moore at another sold-out show in Miami. They have also been remixed by Miami greats, Afrobeta.
