It’s America’s big day and we’re here for it. It’s time to take a break from the grill this year and join Wynwood’s favorite bar and restaurant, Le Chick. Known for its true world-class burger experience and cozy bar vibe, Le Chick is the perfect place to celebrate this special holiday. Fourth of July calls for casual, crowd-pleasing dishes, and nothing says summer like a good ol’ burger, especially an award-winning one. The menu at Le Chick is all about elevated comfort food, so of course, their burgers hit the spot. While beef patties and American cheese are a classic combination, Le Chick’s homemade rolls, and special sauce sure make this burger an extravagant, and must-try staple item from their menu. In celebration of the Fourth of July, guests can enjoy a sinful, juicy burger such as their fan-favorite Royale with Cheese or the Double Dirty, with Dry-aged Brisket 3oz double patties, bacon, cheddar, fried egg, tomato, lettuce, house pickles, secret sauce. Wash it all down with Le Chick’s hand-crafted cocktails or beer selection to top off your meal.

Locust Projects presents Hidden in Plain View, the seventh edition of the LAB MFA summer exhibition program featuring Victoria Ravelo, MFA candidate at the Tyler School of Art and Architecture, Temple University.

Ravelo will be in residence June 1-30, during which time she will transform the storefront Mobile Studio into a working laboratory in which she will create sugar sculptures daily. The use of sugar references the ties of the local community to the Caribbean and the impact the sugar industry has had on the Caribbean as well as its historical significance and influence globally. Although initially only available to those in the ruling class and used as an opulent display of wealth, sugar evolved to become so accessible that those outside of this class developed their own traditions associated with it that continue today.

The finished collaboratively-created installation, on view from July 1 through August 7, serves as an archive of local memory and maps the cultural landscape of Miami’s diverse communities through space and time.

Locust Projects presents Rhythm of Speech, a new experimental audiovisual installation by Miami-based artist and musician Juan Ledesma. Ledesma’s first solo presentation draws connections between diverse musical traditions and our collective lived experiences by exploring the musical potential of spoken accents.

Ledesma’s artistic practice is in constant dialogue with his music-making and seeks to identify how space, time, and sound can materially relate to one another through process-driven explorations. For Rhythm of Speech, the artist invited three Miami-based musicians to create a musical score based on a linguistic analysis of their respective accents. Although accents are commonly considered linguistic indicators of nationality, cultural upbringing, or socio-economic background, Ledesma aims to reframe language as a collective repository of sounds that can be used towards creative musical compositions.

Locust Projects presents Homeline, a new site-specific installation by mutlidisciplinary artists Tal Amitai-Lavi and Tal Frank.

Homeline is inspired by the architectural structures of Locust Projects’ Main Gallery. The installation is composed of three domestic elements created out of unexpectedly weightless materials, including light and delicately-installed nylon strings- a window that separates the space, a projected carpet, and a slowly flowing curtain. These objects generate a succinct, close-knit architectural-sculptural setting in black and white. The installation explores reflections, inversions, illusions, and space disruptions and creates an illusionistic, dreamlike environment. Viewers are confronted by their perception and senses, entering a world whose foundations are fragile, in which life-sized architectural structures have lost their functionality and expected physicality.

History Fort Lauderdale’s “Meet the Author” Zoom Series Featuring Dr. Joe Knetsch 7/8/21

History Fort Lauderdale’s “Meet the Author” Zoom Series Featuring Dr. Joe Knetsch
Thursday, 07/08/2021-, 12:00 pm-01:00 pm
Website
Cost: Free, live interactive Zoom session

History Fort Lauderdale, proud steward of our community’s past by making our heritage accessible and engaging to residents and visitors, will feature Florida historian Dr. Joe Knetsch on the next July 8 noon segment of its “Meet the Author” interactive Zoom series. The new free series takes place on the second Thursday of each month. Viewers may register at http://bit.ly/HFLMeetTheAuthorKnetsch.

Knetsch is the co-author with Pamela Gibson of the recently released Florida in World War I (Arcadia Publishing/The History Press, ISBN: 978-1467148290), a historical deep dive into the role a sparsely populated and largely rural Florida played as America plunged into World War I. The book delves into the state’s sacrifices and contributions with a look at its naval accomplishments – the proud USS Florida, too often mentioned as a mere adjunct to the Atlantic Fleet, receives a just accounting, as does the utterly devastating loss of the USS Tampa, the highest death toll the navy suffered in the war. Sunshine State foresters served critical roles abroad, and local libraries became essential hubs for promoting rationing and reporting news from overseas. Floridian aid workers and soldiers training for departure were stricken with the Spanish flu, a pandemic that shook the globe with force equal to the war itself.

Dr. Joe Knetsch is the author of more than 200 articles and 12 books concerning Florida history. This is his sixth book for Arcadia/The History Press and covers an area in which he has a strong interest. He has been a constant reviewer of military history books for the Journal of America’s Military Past and other professional journals. He holds a doctorate from Florida State University and, for 28 years, was the historian for the Division of State Lands, Florida Department of Environmental Protection. Since his retirement, he has continued to research and publish history. He lives in Tallahassee with his wife, Linda, and their five cats. Knetsch’s works are available through amazon.com and www.arcadiapublishing.com.

Knetsch joins novelist Y.M. Masson, architect and historic preservation consultant Arthur Jay Marcus, historian John Bailey, plus authors Kingsley Guy and Donn R. Colee, Jr. as part of History Fort Lauderdale’s prestigious “Meet the Author” series, a chance to converse with Florida-based writers, launched in February. Upcoming novelists will be announced.

History Fort Lauderdale is currently open seven days a week, from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m., with docent guided tours, daily, at 1, 2 and 3 p.m. Group walking tours are available upon special request. Admission is $15 for adults; $12 for seniors and $7 for students (through age 22 with a valid student ID). Admission is free for members, military and children ages six and under. Tickets are available online at HistoryFortLauderdaleTickets.

Forman’s colorful impressionist environmentally inspired works will be on display at the New River Inn (231 Southwest Second Avenue).

Tim Forman is the third generation of Formans to have been born and reared in South Florida. He first picked-up the brush at nine years old under the instruction of Peter Olsen. By 17, Forman was receiving commissions. Primarily a self-taught artist, Forman’s work is the result of dedicated practice. He uses field sketches, plein air paintings, and photographs to compose his pieces that are painted in layers with both knife and brush. He creates his landscapes to portray the splendor and simplicity of the natural world around us. Through his work, Tim seeks to lift the spirits and inspire awe above our day-to-day lives.

A la batalla! Timbalive vs N’Taya!

Juntos por Primera Vez en un Mismo Escenario! El Concierto que Rompe el Verano en el Sur de la Florida!

Miami’s Salsa, Timba & Changui Heavyweights Battle! Two popular salsa groups, the city’s best dancers, and a competition where everyone wins.

Hosted by Hony Farandula
Musica By: DJ Mini | DJ Ozz | DJ Melao |
DJ Reyna| DJ Ivan El Samurai | DJ Danis la Clave

Sabado 3 de July | 6-11PM
North Beach Bandshell, Miami Beach
Presentando por Asho Productions & Rhythm Foundation!

About Timbalive:

Timbalive is one of the largest and most successful groups of Timba in the United States and the world. The unique band sound, sophisticated production techniques, and a spectacular live show are second to none in the Latin Music scene. The band was created and burst onto South Florida’s music scene in August 2008, by Leo Garcia (timbales & director), offering the best of Cuban music with a mix of different rhythms from around the world. All the band’s members are highly trained musicians from the most prestigious music schools in Cuba and come from well-known groups from the Island.

Their first album, “From Miami a la Habana ” created one of the most unexpected successes in the Latin Music History in the United States. Through their vast discography, Cuban & Latin music hierarchy have shared studio sessions and stages with them. Such music giants names include: Amaury Gutierrez , Willy Chirino , Albita Rodriguez, Issac Delgado, Manolin (El Médico de la Salsa), Grupo Afrocuba, Carlos Manuel, Luis Enrique, Rey Ruiz, Marc Anthony, Celia Cruz, Pablo FG, Clave y Guaguanco, Oscar de Leon, Descemer Bueno, Mayito Rivera, Los 4, Pedrito Calvo, Roberton “Van Van” and Maykel Fonts among many others.

Timbalive has toured Europe, Mexico, Canada, South America, and multiple States in the US, making this band a reference for dancers and Timba lovers in several continents. Songs from their first album such as “El Dinero”, “Ave Maria Que – Calor”, and Como Miami No Hay Na” are still played by DJs in radio stations and night clubs worldwide, fulfilling Leo’s vision of having an international Timba band based in Miami.Twelve years later and five albums, this high-octane ten-member group kept enjoying great success among the Salsa circuit across Europe, South America, Cuba, and the U.S.

About Nic & N’Taya:

Nic & N’Taya is one of only a few bands that have managed successfully to produce a creative body of work in the extremely difficult Cuban Music environment of South Florida. Their last two critically acclaimed albums “#EstoEsUnMisil” y “Tu No Querias Changüí? Coje Changüí !” has been a testament that Timba y Changüí is alive and thriving in Miami.
Changüí is a style of Cuban music that originated in the early 19th century in the eastern region of Guantánamo Province, specifically Baracoa. It arose in the sugar cane refineries and in the rural communities populated by slaves. Changüí combines the structure and elements of Spain’s canción and the Spanish guitar with African rhythms and percussion instruments of Bantu origin. Changüí is considered a predecessor of son montuno (the ancestor of modern salsa), which has enjoyed tremendous popularity in Cuba throughout the 20th century. Timba is a Cuban genre of music based on popular Cuban music along with salsa, American funk/R&B, and the strong influence of Afro-Cuban folkloric music.

Timba rhythm sections differ from their salsa counterparts because timba emphasizes the bass drum, which is not used in salsa bands.
Here’s a sparkling high-voltage band lead by singer Nick “N’Taya ” Martinez who seems to have successfully channeled the spirit and drive of the Timba & Changüí genres to a new generation of Salsa dancers. N’Taya has created a thoroughly enjoyable sound that is perfectly suited for the dance club or your next Cuban or Latin party. Many Miami bands in the past have gotten our hopes up, only to break up. Hopefully, this one will stick around for a while. Stay tuned!

Make Music Miami, the annual celebration of music on the summer solstice, returns this year on Monday, June 21 with dozens of free, virtual and in-person outdoor concerts, music lessons, jam sessions and other exciting music-making events, spotlighting music’s power to connect, comfort, unite and uplift. Miami is among the 90+ U.S. cities hosting major celebrations, in what has become a worldwide phenomenon observed by hundreds of millions of people in over 1,000+ cities in 120 countries. Safety protocols will be in place following local requirements, including mask-wearing, social distancing and limited capacities and group sizes.
Completely different from a typical music festival, Make Music Miami celebrates and promotes the natural music maker in all of us, regardless of ability. Reimagining their cities and towns as stages, every kind of musician – from bucket drummers and opera singers to hip-hop artists and marching bands – pours onto streets, parks, plazas, porches, rooftops, gardens, beaches and other public spaces to celebrate, create and share their music with friends, neighbors and strangers. Due to the pandemic, last year’s celebration was largely virtual, but many in-person events will return in 2021.

For more detailed information, visit makemusicmiami.org. Finalized programming will be posted here the week of the event.

The event kickoff will take place at The Oasis on June 18, 2021, followed by a neighborhood-wide takeover on June 19th. The Wynwood Business Improvement District (BID) is partnering with Wynwood Pride to host a wide range of activations at popular neighborhood hot spots like The Oasis, 1-800-Lucky, Coyo Taco, Freehold, R House, Pizza & Beer, Veza Sur, No. 3 Social, and more with live concert series, neighborhood-wide drag shows, all-day dance parties, surprise celebrity appearances, and new Pride mural installations.

“The Wynwood community is proud of its partnership with Wynwood Pride and commemorate National Pride Month in support of our LGBTQ+ residents, visitors and the communities we serve,” said Albert Garcia, chairman and co-founder of the Wynwood BID. “Wynwood is a community that proudly embraces diversity and inclusion. Over the past few years, Wynwood Pride has brought together thousands of people to celebrate Miami’s growing LGBTQ+ community. This year, extra care has been taken to curate one-of-a-kind, outdoor experiences and activations across Wynwood’s beloved cultural, entertainment and culinary venues.”

Wynwood’s newest culinary and entertainment venue, The Oasis, will act as the main stage for major headliner performances, top local & national DJs, RuPaul’s Drag Race Icons, celebrity hosts, and more. 1-800-Lucky, a 10,000-square-foot Asian-fusion market with indoor and outdoor seating, will present a booming soundtrack by both local and international DJs. R House will host Drag Brunches, Miss Wynwood Pageant, and other outstanding performances honoring Miami’s most fabulous drag performers. The Freehold Wynwood will also keep the party going with an All-Day Disco, featuring funk and house music with non-stop DJ sets and a Sunday cool-down, and closing party with DJ Eli Escobar.

“Wynwood Pride is thrilled to return for its third year with an incredibly progressive lineup that speaks to our diversity as a community and celebrates our past while looking towards the future,” said Jose Atencio, organizer of the Wynwood Pride Festival 2021. “Last year, Wynwood Pride pivoted to a digital celebration, but we are ready to safely come together and once again create some Pride magic together after this past year of being apart.”

“The LGBTQ+ community is an integral part of Miami’s cultural fabric. We’re excited to partner with Wynwood Pride and welcome the community to celebrate at The Oasis, Wynwood’s newest culinary and entertainment venue” said Sven Vogtland, co-owner of The Oasis, Coyo Taco and 1-800-Lucky.

Wynwood Pride 2021 will also benefit three organizations in the fields of LGBTQ+ Youth, Health, and Justice: YES Institute, Planned Parenthood of South, East, and North Florida, and Equality Florida. Tickets start at $50 for the exclusive June 18th Kick-off event at The Oasis. Events at the Oasis on Saturday, June 19th are FREE and open to the public.

Nonprofit Aims to Bulldoze Barriers Affecting Diversity in Miami
MCCJ to Conduct an Open Discussion as the Nation Struggles with Racism

MIAMI, Fl., June 2021 — Juneteenth, the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the U.S. is right around the corner. Historically designated on June 19th, it’s a day for ALL of us to celebrate. For MCCJ, the non-profit organization that advocates for diversity and equality, it’s a day to reflect in dialogue and plan for a better future. As part of their “Can We Talk? Really, Can We Talk?” series, MCCJ will present “Bulldozing Barriers: Reflections of Juneteenth & Diversity in Miami” — an effort to encourage continuous self-development and respect not just for the black community, but for all cultures.

“We invite people of all races, religions and cultures to join us in conversation as we acknowledge a period in history that should have shaped and influenced our society, but due to ongoing discord and violence against people of color and religious backgrounds over this past year, it’s become clear that we are regressing rather than progressing,” says MCCJ’s Executive Director, Matthew Anderson. He will be moderating a frank discussion about racial fears and how it affects our progress for a more inclusive community. Following the panel discussion, people are invited to enjoy the “One Way” exhibit at the Hampton Art Lovers, a non-profit art gallery that advocates for black art, and is open to all who love art in all its forms.

Panelists Include:
– Marilyn Holifield, Partner, Holland & Knight and MCCJ Silver Medallion winner
– Saif Ishoof, Vice President for Engagement FIU and MCCJ Silver Medallion winner
– Matthew Beatty, COO Carrie Meek Foundation
– Pamela Fuertes, Executive Director, Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses Program at Miami Dade College
– Deborah Koch, Executive Director at American Red Cross of Greater Miami
– Kathryn Mikesell, Founder, Fountainhead Residency
– Esther Park, Vice President of Programming Oolite Arts
– Matt Anderson, Executive Director, MCCJ (Moderator)

MASK
PROTOCOL:
The panelists will hold this conversation outdoors under a big tent. In an abundance of caution, we urge thoughtful consideration when it comes to wearing a mask and maintaining six feet of separation.

ABOUT MCCJ:
MCCJ, Inc. was originally founded in Miami in 1935 as the Miami Branch of the National Conference of Christians & Jews. Later on, the group was renamed the Miami Coalition of Christians and Jews. In 2011, in recognition of its embrace of people of ALL faiths and secular backgrounds, the organization formally changed its name to MCCJ, Inc. Today, it goes beyond its original intent by creating a haven for dialog, training inclusive leaders and promoting understanding for all faiths, races and cultures through education, advocacy and conflict resolution. It hosts the oldest continuous interfaith clergy dialog in the United States and presents prejudice reducing programs in local high schools, among other activities. This dynamic conversation will expand on a formative moment in Michael Richards’ artistic practice, and his integral involvement with a group of Black artists emerging in the 1990s. In 1992–1993, Michael Richards participated in the Whitney Independent Study Program—a year-long program for artists and curators that encourages critical study and theoretical inquiry—in New York City, along with artists Dread Scott, Lyle Ashton Harris, and Renee Cox. Moderated by Whitney Museum curator Rujeko Hockley, this conversation will reunite Cox, Harris, and Scott, each of whom, in addition to being friends with Richards, engaged him in their own art-making.

Conversations at MOCA is presented by the Green Family Foundation.

MOCA North Miami’s exhibitions and programs are made possible with the generous support of the North Miami Mayor and Council and the City of North Miami, the State of Florida, Department of State, Division of Cultural Affairs and the Florida Council on Arts and Culture, and the Miami-Dade County

MIAMI BEACH, FLA.—June 1, 2021—The Betsy-South Beach Hotel (The Betsy) announces two events to honor Juneteenth 2021. Both events are presented in partnership with the Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce and Florida International University Miami Beach Urban Studios. No tickets are required and the programs are free and open to the public.

Juneteenth — a combination of “June” and “nineteenth” – recognizes the date that formerly enslaved African Americans were informed that they were finally free. Though African Americans have long celebrated Juneteenth, the National Museum of African American History and Culture notes ‘this monumental event remains largely unknown to most Americans.”
Juneteenth celebrations remind us that freedom and racial equality have always been and continue to be a hard-fought battle for African Americans. Community Juneteenth celebrations will inspire honest conversation about societal inequities that continue to threaten and devalue the lives of African Americans and also provide a forum to celebrate African American excellence.

Pompano Beach Arts presents Karina Iglesias and the Nu-Thang

WHO: Karina Iglesias and the Nu-Thang

WHAT: A virtual concert

WHERE: from the Pompano Beach Cultural Center

WHEN: Saturday June 19, from 8 to 9:30 PM

WHY:In 2013, Karina was a contestant on NBC’s #1 Hit TV Show, The Voice. She made it to the Top 16 on the live shows. She was originally on Adam Levine’s team but was later stolen by Shakira after her epic performance of “Its a man’s, man’s, man’s world” which turned into a YouTube sensation. With her highly-focused artistic vision, rich cultural background and proclivity for harnessing a wide range of production techniques, Karina Iglesias brings forth a strong element of innovation and heralds a much-needed return to the authenticity of pure soul music.

Born and raised in Miami, Florida to Honduran parents, Karina Iglesias’ sound mirrors the diverse musical and cultural influences that have shaped her character and forged her individuality as an artist. With a style equally informed by rhythm and blues, boleros, gospel and hip-hop Karina delivers her performances with the intimacy of a deep soul crooner and the conviction and drive of a dauntless female singer/songwriter.

A veteran of the Miami live music scene, Karina began writing songs during the time she started working extensively with local bands. It soon became apparent that through composing original material, her true artistic identity had emerged. Her emotionally charged and deeply personal lyrics now revealed a depth of character and vulnerability that can only be conveyed when a singer truly connects with their song. Hosted by Tamara G of WLYF 101.5

TICKETS: Available for $15 at http://pompanobeacharts.org/programs/music-series
Note: Tickets are valid for the following two weeks.
The final three concerts in the series are available for $37.50

Video: It’s a Man’s World https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3umukh_t7-E

The Concert Series is presented by the Pompano Beach Cultural Affairs Division

National Pink Day Summer Breast Cancer Awareness 6/23/21

National Pink Day Summer Breast Cancer Awareness
Wednesday, 06/23/2021-, 12:01 am-11:59 pm
Facebook
Cost: No Cost

On this National Pink Day, June 23rd, The Women’s Breast & Heart Initiative (WBHI)— a leader in disease prevention and early detection community outreach— invites women to “Mask Up and Get Your Mammogram”, following healthcare guidance while ensuring timely screenings delayed by the pandemic.

Women are encouraged to contact WBHI to schedule their mammogram at no cost by calling 305-825-4081. Valued partner Jackson Health System will also be providing heart screenings, presenting a more comprehensive preventive care approach. As WBHI’s community partner that cares deeply about the community, Fresco y Más in Hialeah will host the breast and heart screenings to be held on National Pink Day, June 23rd by appointment only.

Everyone near and far is invited to support the campaign with pink inspired images and messages, and the hashtag #WBHIPinkDay by posting on social media and tagging Facebook @TheWBHI and Instagram @WBHI on National Pink Day, June 23rd for awareness and remembrance.

With pink being the color for breast cancer, WBHI’s summer breast cancer awareness campaign on National Pink Day helps women access critical resources to help beat the odds of breast cancer. 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer over their lifetime; and the death rate has increased. Over the course of the pandemic, mammogram utilization decreased as much as 80%. Delayed, or missed cancer screenings could mean diagnosis at a later stage with a poorer prognosis.

“Our summer breast cancer campaign on National Pink Day reminds women it’s time to ‘Mask Up and Get Your Mammogram’, practicing preventive care while protecting our healthcare heroes in clinical settings,” states Andrea Ivory, WBHI’s Founder and Executive Director. “Breast cancer is diagnosed year-round, but the good news is that early detection, and disease deterrent lifestyles change and saves lives.

Disease prevention and early detection are critical to fostering healthy communities. WBHI is a leader in providing breast and heart health education and resources through a comprehensive strategy to all communities in need in South Florida. The complexities of American masculinity and boyhood come to the stage in a theatrical, vulnerable, and powerful world premiere dance evening presented by international Choreographer Randolph Ward.

Boys Will be Boys is an emotionally charged evening that dissects toxic masculinity and American ideologies on manhood. In a “call and response” military style cadence, performers enter the theater space chanting and marching in formation. “Man up”, “boys don’t cry”, and “take it like a man”, can be heard and are vocalized by dancers as B-Boys, Eagle and Christian battle each other in the street style of dance called “breaking”.

Dance NOW! Miami (DNM), one of the leading contemporary companies in Florida, brings their 2020/21 season to a rousing close when they return to the Miami Theater Center on Saturday, June 19 at 8:00 pm, with their updated Program III. The evening will include the U.S. premiere of Caravan, a commentary on the European migration and culture crisis, from Italy’s Opus Ballet, along with the Miami premieres of Dorian’s Reflection, inspired by the classic Oscar Wilde novel, and the Jewish-themed Anusim. Seating will be reduced to allow for social distancing, and mask wearing required.

Dorian’s Reflection, choreographed by DNM Artistic Co-Directors Hannah Baumgarten and Diego Salterini, is a contemporary treatment of the story and characters from Wilde’s novel, “The Picture of Dorian Gray,” a foundational part of the gay literary canon. The ballet, with an original score by internationally recognized composer Davidson Jaconello, explores the themes of self-importance, self-indulgence, newfound sexuality and even violent behavior, embodied in Dorian, who in the original remained forever young while his portrait ages instead. The dance work updates the narrative to our modern time of online identities and social media, flipping the story so that Dorian’s projected image stays young while the character of Dorian ages.

The other world premiere on the program, Anusim: what is hidden is never lost, is also a Baumgarten and Salterini collaboration. It is inspired by the 1497 decree in Portugal forcing all Jews to be baptized as “New Christians,” but allowing them to practice their own religion in secret. It includes an original score from long-time collaborator Federico Bonacossa and vocals from local Sephardic singer Susana Behar.

Three dynamic, powerful performers — singers, musicians, and songwriters Yusa, Inez Barlatier, and Keba— headline the concert Women of the Caribbean, a musical celebration staged outdoors, in the Koubek’s Gardens, marking the re-opening of the Koubek for limited-capacity audiences following COVID-19 guidelines.

Yusa is a Cuban multi-instrumentalist, singer, songwriter, lyricist, arranger, and composer powerhouse. Her work suggests a deep knowledge of Cuban musical traditions such as son and trova, but updated with elements of jazz, pop, and R&B. A classical guitarist by training, Yusa specialized early on in the tres, a small six-string guitar-like instrument that is the defining sound of Cuban son, and later incorporated in her music electric bass, keyboard and percussion instruments.

The sound of Trinidad-born singer and songwriter Keba is a lived-in blend of classic soul, R&B, and pop, she mentions artists such as Whitney Houston and Aretha Franklin as references, mixed with her own rhythmic sense. She has described her lyrics as a mix of “raw vulnerability with a playful exploration of love, femininity and identity as a first-generation immigrant and millennial”.

Miami’s own Haitian-American Inez Barlatier is a multi-disciplinary artist and educator. Accompanying herself on guitar, her rich, expressive voice, storytelling lyrics, and on-stage presence evokes the work of folk music-based artists such as Tracy Chapman and Joan Armatrading.

To ensure the health and safety of all guests and staff in attendance, guests must purchase tickets in advance, and be ready to present their E-ticket on their mobile device at the door, for a contactless experience. All attendees are required to adhere to social distancing guidelines (6 ft.) and wear the appropriate facial coverings correctly throughout the event, except when eating or drinking.

History Fort Lauderdale’s “Meet the Author” Zoom Series Featuring Y.M. Masson 6/10/21

History Fort Lauderdale’s “Meet the Author” Zoom Series Featuring Y.M. Masson
Thursday, 06/10/2021-, 12:00 pm-01:00 pm
Website
Cost: Free, live interactive Zoom session

History Fort Lauderdale, proud steward of our community’s past by making our heritage accessible and engaging to residents and visitors, will feature Broward County novelist Y.M. Masson on the next June 10 noon segment of its “Meet the Author” interactive Zoom series. The new free series takes place on the second Thursday of each month. Viewers may register at http://bit.ly/HFLMeetTheAuthorMasson.

Masson is the author of When Paris Was Dark (ISBN 978-1-946886-09-5), a story of a young boy’s fear, courage, despair and determination during the World War II German occupation of France. The tale mirrors Masson’ own experiences during this turbulent time. It won third place in the Royal Palm Literary Awards from the Florida Writers Association 2018 competition.

As a young boy Y. M. Masson (Yves) struggled through four years of hardship under German occupation of Paris until he was liberated by the American Third Army. Twenty years later, after having served in the French army in North Africa during the French-Algerian war, he left France for New York City and became a United States citizen in the early seventies. After working as a marketing executive in corporate America, and then running his own consulting business, Masson turned to the arts. He is an accomplished portrait artist, but loves to share his life experiences with his readers. He knows what war does to people and especially to children. His ability to describe their daily fears, their devastating hunger, and the despair of deprivation draws his audience into their conflict.

Masson’s other novels include The War Inside His Mind (ISBN: 978-1-946886-13-2) and Never Give Up (ISBN 978-1-946886-14-9). All works are available at his website at www.ymmassonauthor.com.

Masson joins architect and historic preservation consultant Arthur Jay Marcus, historian John Bailey, plus authors Kingsley Guy and Donn R. Colee, Jr. as part of History Fort Lauderdale’s prestigious “Meet the Author” series, a chance to converse with South Florida-based writers, launched in February.

Cooke will read excerpts from the book and will answer questions along side his contributors such as the Museum of Graffiti’s own Carlos Mare. Books will be available signing by both Cooke and Mare.

Hip-Hop Architecture outlines a powerful new manifesto-the voice of the underrepresented, marginalized, and voiceless within the discipline. Exploring the production of spaces, buildings, and urban environments that embody the creative energies in hip-hop, it is a newly expanding design philosophy which sees architecture as a distinct part of hip-hop’s cultural expression, and which uses hip-hop as a lens through which to provoke new architectural ideas.

Examining the present and the future of Hip-Hop Architecture, the book also explores its historical antecedents and its theory, placing it in a wider context both within architecture and within Black and African American movements. Throughout, the work is illustrated with inspirational case studies of architectural projects and creative practices, and interspersed with interludes and interviews with key architects, designers, and academics in the field. This is a vital and provocative work that will appeal to architects, designers, students, theorists, and anyone interested in a fresh view of architecture, design, race and culture.

Finally back out into the night! It felt so good to be covering an event again, finally. The opening of Dogfish Head Brewery, in the beloved Concrete Beach location, was the perfect thing for it. We were delighted to hear that Dogfish Head has the same dedication to localness as Concrete Beach. They have a variety of interesting beer flavors and are even including fruit beers, as befits a south Florida brewery.

Doghead Beach Brewery open to the public on Friday, May, 21, at 3:00pm. They are located at 325 NW 24th St, Miami, FL 33127 in Wynwood.
