The 2021 Full Moon Glow-UP event series will kick off with its first event of the year on Thursday, January 28, 2021. The event will be hosted by Diario Las Americas Journalist Grethel Delgado and held from 6:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at The Coral Gables Museum’s outdoor plaza. To ensure the safety of all guests, face masks must be worn by all guests and vendors during the event.

Every month, the full moon emits a powerful energy. Since the effects are typically felt up to two weeks after the full moon phase, it’s the perfect opportunity to align the mind, body and spirit. This Full Moon “Glow-Up” event will feature a beauty and retail market hour from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. with special pop-ups by Purple Lotus Spiritual Healing, Keeks Corner and Candles by Janet. During the event, guests will enjoy live DJ beats while sipping complimentary Barcelo Rum cocktails and cold pressed juices by Lo Bueno Juices. For an extra touch of glam, Kairos Hair Salon will activate a special hair braid station and Henna Artist Seema will be applying henna designs for $10- $15. The event also features a live painting of “The Moon Shadow Series” by local Miami based artist Adriana Jay. Starting at 8:00 p.m., guests will be able to relax, meditate, stretch and unwind during a one-hour yoga class led Yoga Instructor Christine Gagen.

To ensure social distancing, all yoga mats will be spaced 6 ft. apart throughout the museum’s outdoor plaza. All guests will receive a complimentary goodie bag upon arrival.

The series of exhilarating evenings will take place on the last Thursday of every month and feature a Las Vegas Style Cabaret with burlesque performers, live music including acclaimed singers, a 7-piece band and DJ, a premium open bar and an unforgettable prix fixe menu. • Second course: Select one from Guava Smoked Pollo Barbacoa served with Maduros + Congris, Asado Negro Style Short Rib over Creamy Boniato Puree, Crispy Branzino Filet served with Sautéed Vegetables, or Arroz De Mar highlighting Corvina, Octopus and Squid.

Kuba Cabana boasts 8,900-square-feet of dining and patio seating. For their exciting return to the SMDCAC stage, Dimensions Dance Theatre of Miami presents a program reflective of both the emotional trials and tribulations of 2020 and an enduring optimism for a better 2021. Company premieres include “Castles in the Air” by Yanis Eric Pikieris, a contemporary tour de force originally created for film during pandemic lockdowns, Gerald Arpino’s “RUTH, Ricordi per Due,” the iconic choreographer’s statement on remembrance, love, and loss, and the powerful, high spirited “Adiemus” by Yanis Pikieris and David Palmer. In January 2021, the Museum of Contemporary Art North Miami (MOCA) will launch “Art on the Plaza,” a year-long series of newly commissioned, temporary public artworks by Miami-based artists on MOCA Plaza. Featured artists include: Reginald O’Neal, Studio AMLgMATD (Laz Ojalde and Natalie Zlamalova), a collaborative presentation by Morel Doucet and Stephen Arboite, Nice N’ Easy (Allison Matherly & Jeffrey Noble) and Najja Moon. The museum will host a series of virtual programs to coincide with the art installations throughout the year. The program is made possible with major support from the North Miami Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA).

From January 22 – March 7, Miami-based artist Reginald O’Neal will showcase a detailed mural depicting his cultural heritage and narratives relating to Miami’s Historic Overtown neighborhood, in a powerful depiction of past and present.

Wynwood Mural Fest is honored to unveil a larger than life tribute mural to late Champion fighter and activist Muhammad Ali painted by Artist Hiero Veiga for Ali’s Birthday weekend.

The 40ft wide x 15ft tall artwork is on view at 426 NW 25TH ST, Miami, FL 33127 in Miami’s Wynwood Art District. Titled ‘Be your own Champion’, the mural is one of 10 new project sites featuring the work of more than 60 artists painted in connection with Wynwood Mural Fest 2020, during what would have traditionally been Miami Art Basel Week.

Born January 17, 1942, boxing legend Muhammad Ali had strong ties to Miami. In the 1960’s, Ali broke through race boundaries and transformed from a brash boxer to an outspoken political and religious activist while training on South Beach at the 5th Street Gym and living in Miami’s Allapattah and Overtown neighborhoods. Today, Ali remains a role model and source of inspiration to members of marginalized communities.

The Ali mural is produced by Stephanie Kassoy (Nekto Collective), with support from Glayson LeRoy (Galera Collective); Lead Camera & Editor, Connor Ray (@thecolorblnd); and B-Camera + Drone Pilot, David Sepa (@davids.visuals).

Known for his portraiture and realistic style, Hiero or Hiero Veiga, is an American contemporary graffiti artist of tremendous work. Hailing from Massachusetts, Hiero grew up writing graffiti in the early 2000’s. Not long after, Hiero made the transition from the street into a thriving career as a professional artist. His work has taken him around the world; in the streets and on gallery and private walls.

Business for the Arts Broward (BFA) kicks off the New Year with its ongoing Arts Mean Business Speaker Series (AMB) featuring a free virtual presentation and live Q&A with artist Federico Uribe.

A native of Bogota, Colombia, Uribe has become a prominent artist featured in North and South America, Russia, England and Italy. After completing his studies at the University of Los Andes, he left Bogota in the late 1980s to pursue a master of fine arts degree in New York. After working and studying for many years in Cuba, Mexico, Russia and England, he finally settled in Miami, where he resides today.

Beginning his art career strictly as a painter who created sensual and brooding canvases influenced by his dark reflections on the Catholic sense of pain, guilt and sexuality, Uribe later expanded his work to create unique installations and sculptures in the mid-90s. His current work resists classification and emerges from intertwining everyday objects like bullet shells, pencils, neckties or electric wires in surprising ways to create boldly beautiful paintings and sculptures which become instruments of a new aesthetic, full of color, irony and lively playfulness.

AMB is just one of several ways BFA supports local artists while fostering cultural vitality, creative success and economic development. BFA continuously supports the local arts community and promotes local artists, cultural non-profits and diverse art-related projects. BFA annually hosts several events in addition to AMB, including Art & Soul, Art in the Workplace, Art Curation and Art+Stroll.

This Moment, Here is a commentary on the “time of Corona,” told through the language of dance. The confinement, isolation, rage, longing, confrontation, disbelief, optimism and camaraderie that make up the world’s shared experiences during these turbulent months are the inspiration for this one-act ballet. With choreography by DNM Co-Founders and Artistic Directors Hannah Baumgarten and Diego Salterini, the piece was developed building on personal stories of company members and others. “This Moment, Here” features original music by Federico Bonacossa, costumes by Haydee and Maria Morales and set and lighting design by Bruce F. Brown, all long-time DNM collaborators.

This classy evening, hosted by Drag Queen, Miss Noel Leon, embraces the Roaring Twenties and is open to guests aged 21 and older. Crowned Burlesque Queens, the cast of Cocktails & Cabaret, will take guests on a musical journey from the Roaring Twenties to today’s chart-topping hits, including songs such as “Fever,” “Whatever Lola Wants,” “All That Jazz,” a tribute to Disco, a Carnival Finale and more. Fifteen minutes before the countdown to midnight begins, guests will receive 12 lucky grapes (a Cuban tradition) and a glass of Prosecco to welcome the year 2021. All other beverages are available for an additional charge. Prime tables, available for prices ranging from $750–$3,000, will include bottle service ranging per person and table size. The impressive 3-course Latin-style New Year’s Eve menu, prepared by Kuba Cabana’s celebrated Corporate Chef Jorge Mas and Executive Chef Pedro E. Sarracino, will be served during the first seating (7–9:15 p.m.) and second seating (9:45 p.m.–midnight) only:

Kuba Cabana is in compliance with the best practices recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), as well as state and local health care officials, in an effort to serve as a place where guests feel comfortable venturing back into public and reconnecting with friends and family. All guests and employees are required to wear a facial covering, maintain the social distance of 6 feet between visitors and wash their hands in accordance with the CDC guidelines.

Cancellation policy: $50 cancellation fee per person in the reservation. If absent on Dec. 31, 30 minutes after reservation time., Kuba Cabana will charge the cancellation fee. Parties that have less guests than reserved will still be charged the entire fee for the empty, reserved seats. The South Beach Jazz Festival kicks off with Sobe at Nobe featuring Matthew Whitaker, an 18-year-old, blind American jazz pianist with an impressive resume and incredible talent. This multi-award-winning, internationally recognized, young jazz phenomenon has played world-renowned stages including Lincoln Center, the Apollo Theater, Cargenie Hall, and New Orleans Jazz Festival… just to name a few. You may have seen him featured on 60 Minutes earlier this year.
The two-time ASCAP Foundation Herb Alpert Young Jazz Composers Award winner will take the stage with his quartet on Friday, January 8 at 8 pm. Matthew Whitaker’s sound is filled with refined dynamics, a light and artful touch, accompanied by bright strings and rhythm. His approach to each instrument is thoughtful and distinctive- melodic and improvisational on piano, complex textured and harmonically dense on the organ. With a personal touch, supported by highly skilled colleagues, Matthew, whose enthusiasm is incessant, is the center of this quartet, smooth, graceful, and full of energy. In honor of Haitian Independence Day, the Museum of Contemporary Art North Miami (MOCA) is proud to host Haitian-American multidisciplinary artist Inez Barlatier, musician and surrealist visual artist Jan Sebon, and author Fabienne Josaphat for an intimate program of music and poetry on Jan. 1. This virtual performance coincides with the museum’s current exhibition “Life & Spirituality in Haitian Art: Selection from the Betty and Isaac Rudman Trust Collection,” on view through March 14, 2021.

Initiated by the voodoo ceremony of Bois Caïman on the night of August 14, 1791, The Haitian Revolution represents one of the key turning points in the history of the western world and human rights. Led by enslaved Africans in the French colony of Saint Domingue, the revolution resulted in the abolition of slavery in the colony, the first to do so in the western world, and the birth of Haiti on January 1 of 1804. Today, Haitian in Haiti and the diaspora celebrate their Independence in honor of a line of ancestors that fought for their freedom. At the center of the celebration is Soup Joumou, a traditional soup that becomes a symbol of their freedom. MOCA North Miami is pleased to celebrate our Haitian community.

The acts include:

Inez Barlatier is a Haitian-American multidisciplinary artist. At the age of 12 years old, she joined her father’s band, Jan Sebon & Kazak International. Inez later led her own band, Kazoots, for 6 years. She has received a Knight Arts Champion, a L.E.A.P. and an Artist Relief grant supporting her ongoing projects. Inez developed a children’s show entitled “Ayiti: Stories & Songs from Haiti” which was selected as a Spotlight presentation at the 2020 International Performance Art for Youth Conference.

Jan Sebon is a musician and visual artist from Haiti. He is a staple in Miami as pioneering Haitian Jazz music in Miami with his band Koleksyon Kazak. Sebon has hosted political radio shows in Haiti resulting in him being exiled and moving to Miami at the age of 22. He later became an activist and community organizer, fighting for Haitian immigrant rights and hosting another radio show on WDNA in Miami. He has been performing in Miami for over 30 years and has toured internationally while being a former board member at the Miami Light Project. Sebon is also a masterful African and Haitian drummer and surrealist visual artist.

Fabienne Josaphat is the author of Dancing in the Baron’s Shadow, a debut novel released with Unnamed Press and translated into French by Calmann-Levy. Her essay, Summer is an Empty House, recently made the Notable Essays mentions in Best American Essays 2016. Her fiction, non-fiction and poetry have been featured in the African American Review, The Master’s Review, Grist Journal, Damselfly, Hinchas de Poesia, Off the Coast Journal and The Caribbean Writer, as well as in Eight Miami Poets, a Jai-Alai Books poetry anthology. She was recently a national juror for the 2019 Scholastic Awards. She lives in South Florida.

Young artists aged 10-13 are invited to join the Museum of Contemporary Art North Miami (MOCA) virtually this winter break for a series of creative and interactive art workshops. Registration includes art packs with all the creative tools needed to create one-of-a-kind masterpieces.

Participants can sign up for as many individual sessions as they please, or the full session. Following are the Winter Workshops:

Monday, Dec. 21 ― Super Cyanotypes: Learn one of the oldest styles of photography. Gather your favorite small objects and get ready to learn about the special STEAM style of image making.

Tuesday, Dec. 22 ― Picturesque Painting: Get inspired by MOCA’s latest exhibition, “Life & Spirituality in Haitian Art,” and learn to create your own portrait painting in the style of notable Haitian artists.

Wednesday, Dec. 23 ― Beautifully Beaded: Pull inspiration from the ornate and intricate works of Raul de Nieves by viewing MOCA’s current exhibition, “Raul De Nieves: Eternal Return & the Obsidian Heart.” Create your own beaded and embroidered mask or felt face to showcase your style.

Monday, Dec. 28 ― Cast Creations: Learn all about mold making and simple casting to create unforgettable impressions out of plaster that will commemorate this moment in time.

Tuesday, Dec. 29 ― Beautiful Books: Create your own handmade book and fill your book pages with your own mixed media collage inspired by Henri Matisse.

Wednesday, Dec. 30 ― Kawaii Creatures: Create your own Kawaii creatures and learn about this unique art style from Japan.

Thursday, Dec. 31 ― Powerful Prints: Share your thoughts on the end of this year and your hopes for the new year with layered printmaking techniques.
