Isadora Duncan was an American pioneer of concert dance at the turn of the 20th century, a self-styled revolutionary, whose innovative free-spirited style broke with the dominant rigidity of ballet and led to what is now called modern or contemporary dance. Dance NOW! Miami (DNM), one of the leading companies in Florida, will reconstruct four essential works of Duncan’s for their annual Masterpiece In Motion series, at their Program II Contemporanea, along with featuring guest company Italy’s Opus Ballet, Saturday, March 21, at 8:30 pm, at the Aventura Arts & Cultural Center.

The evening also features guest company Opus Ballet, from Florence, Italy, one of Italy’s rising contemporary dance troupes, on their first U.S. tour. They will share the stage as part of the ongoing Dance NOW! Miami Bridges Project. DNM was in residence in Italy and collaborated with Opus Ballet last spring, where they performed the original Bridges NOT Walls. This time both companies will be performing in Opus Ballet’s original Caravan, a commentary on the European crisis with migration and culture. “To bring a company from Italy here to South Florida, to partner with them, means so much to me, having been raised in Italy and now having lived here for decades,” says Dance Now Miami Co-Artistic Director Diego Salterini. Additional work from each company will round out the program.

Tickets for the Saturday, March 21 Contemporanea 2020 evening are $35 general admission, and $15 students (at the box office in-person only). Regular price tickets can be purchased in advance online at tinyurl.com/Isadora2020 and by phone at (877) 311-7469, or in-person tickets at the Aventura Arts & Cultural Center box office, 3385 NE 188th Street, in Aventura. For group sales of ten or more, for more information, or any disability accommodation, dancenowmiami.org/program-ii.html or contact Dance NOW! at (305) 975-8489 and info@dancenowmiami.org.

For the Miami iteration of the Spanish artist’s ongoing project, first enacted in Madrid in 2007, eleven individuals, placed in various locations or public transit routes around the city, recorded forty-five-minute narrations of their observations, noting both every day and unexpected details. These recordings of “incessant description, recited like a prayer,” posted online as digital audio files, constitute an archive of subjective interpretations that document a particular place at a particular time.

Garcia says the “recited descriptions are as much of people, situations, attitudes, events, as of buildings, structures, itineraries, activities, routines, objects, atmospheres, circumstances, sounds, smells, including also the impressions, deductions, and intuitions of the describing or narrating subject.”

Fort Lauderdale Country Club
415 Country club Circle,
Fort Lauderdale, Florida 33317

Cost: $400 per person

Blue Martini Fort Lauderdale will host its 11th annual Golf Invitational to benefit A Prom to Remember on Monday, March 23, from 11 a.m. – 6 p.m., at Fort Lauderdale Country Club, the oldest private country club in Broward County. A Prom to Remember is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to provide the ultimate prom experience for teens who have been affected by cancer, at no-cost to their families.

Funds from this tournament will help to create this year’s prom on May 8 at the Ritz-Carlton, Fort Lauderdale. Over 200 teens will experience an unforgettable night with Miami Dolphin players, Miami Heat and Miami Hurricane cheerleaders/dancers along with local celebrities, DJs and more.

The tournament format consists of registration and lunch at 11 a.m. with a 12:30 p.m. shotgun start for a four-person scramble. A silent auction with luxury items awards ceremony and dinner will be held at 6 p.m. This will be the first charitable tournament to be held on Fort Lauderdale Country Club’s newly renovated North Course.

The North Course project, overseen by Kipp Schulties, principal architect of Kipp Schulties Golf Design (KSGD), underwent an extensive renovation including replacement of the greens and the provision of tees between 4,800 yards and 7,100 yards, making the course more enjoyable for both men and women of all abilities. The upgrades created an elevated level of excitement for members adding to the facility’s 18-Hole, Par 72 South Course which was built in 1926, remodeled twice and is often home to many corporate and non-profit events, annually.

In the Broward County area, which has numerous golf courses, Fort Lauderdale Country Club is a select private club that offers 36-holes of manicured championship golf in a forested park-like setting. Visually, the Club is truly a unique oasis as fairways are lined with stately native trees and colorful beds of flowers, as opposed to houses.

The Blue Martini Golf Invitational at Fort Lauderdale Country Club is also sponsored by Cheney Brothers, Daoud’s Fine Jewelry, WSVN and Ultimate Software.

The golf fee to participate in the 11th Annual Blue Martini is $400 per person or $1,600 for a Corporate Sponsorship foursome which includes a tee or a green sign and company recognition. Fees includes lunch, greens fees and golf cart, a golfer’s gift bag, day-of-event contests, on-course beverages and the awards dinner and ceremony. Golf club rentals are available for an additional fee. Registration is required by visiting http://bit.ly/APTRGolfTourney2020 or by calling 877-385-7766.

History Fort Lauderdale, proud steward of our community’s past by making our heritage accessible and engaging to residents and visitors, will celebrate Women’s History Month, World Water Month, and the centennial year of Women’s Suffrage with “Through the Sawgrass: Women Impacting South Florida History,” a photography narrative by award-winning artist Lisette Morales. The exhibit will open on March 8, International Women’s Day, with a special reception where attendees will have the opportunity to meet some of the subjects and participate in a brief introduction and Q & A with Lisette Morales, via video conference, from 1 – 3 p.m. The exhibit will be on display through May 25 in the New River Inn (231 Southwest Second Avenue in Downtown Fort Lauderdale).

“Through the Sawgrass: Women Impacting South Florida History” addresses women’s issues, social injustice, migration, human rights, environmentalism, and LGBTQ concerns and features Betty Osceola (a Miccosukee grandmother and Everglades conservationist), Sister Maureen Kelleher (37 years as immigration attorney with Legal Aid Broward and Collier Counties), Melanie Oliva (artist and founder of the Artful Activist for social change) and Marta Sicaján (survivor of human trafficking and women’s empowerment leader).

Lisette Morales is a Nicaraguan-born photojournalist and interdisciplinary artist based in Florida. Her camera has been her tool for activism since the early ‘90s when she traveled
through war-torn areas of Central America, documenting the disruption from military conflicts. After surviving domestic violence in her own life, Morales turned to painting and illustration as a mode of catharsis and self-expression. Her work echoes the feminist worldview that she now embodies and has been featured in numerous publications. In recent years, Lisette has returned to photography as her media of choice. Lisette was an official delegate to the United Nations Women 2018 Commission on the Status of Women. She’s a member of the Artful Activist, Zuma Press, The Authority Collective, ArtAid Naples and Colectivo Liminal. Her current project is The Road to Immokalee documenting the women farmworkers of the Coalition of Immokalee Workers.

“Through the Sawgrass: Women Impacting South Florida History,” is one of several stories that History Fort Lauderdale is proud to spotlight. The nonprofit museum also hosts a variety of yearly multicultural exhibits highlighting African American, Caribbean and Latin artists sharing their views of history. Also currently on display is the new “The Bryans of Fort Lauderdale” permanent exhibit which allows guests to experience the story of the City of Fort Lauderdale as told through the pioneer family that shaped its development from an agricultural outpost in 1896 to a bustling city in the 1920s to its current status as a leading Metropolis, “Juliette Lange: A Portrait of a Mezzo Soprano,” a fashion and lifestyle glimpse of the socially prominent Fort Lauderdale resident with a lauded career as a star vocalist of musical comedy, plus “Archaeology of the New River” and a multitude of narratives and photos sharing the history of other founding families of Fort Lauderdale.

Entry to the new photography exhibit is free with general admission – $15 for adults; $12 for seniors and $7 for students (through age 22 with a valid student ID). Admission is always free for members, military and children ages six and under.

The Art Gallery is dedicated to showcasing and selling the works of local artists, commission-free! The Gallery serves as one of the most diverse in Broward County, where a multitude of cultures converge, creating an energetic atmosphere and a sense of community.

Through April 1, guests are invited to view the exhibition, “BLACK” by artist Jimmy H. Camille, in Celebration of Black History Month.

About the artist: When most teenagers between adolescence and adulthood were transitioning, Jimmy Camille’s unique expressions of art were his outlet. His life-altering journey into the art world began at the age of seventeen. Born in the sunny city of West Palm Beach, Jimmy Camille is a self-taught artist found at many South Florida college campuses free-styling his works to the public. His thought provoking mixed mediums were the catalyst for his title “The Art Monster.” Jimmy’s vision can be seen in the beautiful intertwining of contemporary, pop, and abstract mediums, a platform that adds lucidity and relevance for his fast growing and captive audience.

Join Mandy Baca, a local historian and food scholar, for a bucket-list worthy afternoon of food and culture. Explore a unique part of Miami-Dade County: Sweetwater and Fontainebleau. This is the heart of Miami’s Nicaraguan community. And Miami has the largest Nicaraguan community in the United States, so that’s saying something.

Despite the community’s prominence in Miami, too few people are familiar with Nicaraguan culture and and cuisine.

Mandy has carefully selected 6 different local food businesses that represent the community. And we’ll be tasting more than 10 Nicaraguan delicacies. Some of these foods can’t be found anywhere else outside of Nicaragua.

At the same time, Mandy will go over the cultural significance of what we’ll be sampling, the special ingredients and techniques that go into Nicaraguan cuisine, and the history of Nicaraguans in Miami.

Transportation is included. An air conditioned van will meet us at our first stop, take us to all our stops, and return back to where we started.

This food crawl will include:
– A exclusive visit to an iconic formal restaurant.
– The best and biggest tamale in Latin America.
– A unique take on a salad.
– Learning why Nicaragua is the Dairy Land of Central America with tastings of artisanal, locally-made cheeses and cultured cream.
– A more sophisticated chocolate milk.
– Discovering the difference between Mexican and Nicaraguan tortillas.
– Miami’s most distinctive frozen treat.
– The Nicaraguan answer to fast food.
– A visit to a traditional grocery.
– Traditional cookies and fudge.

$45 includes all food, beverages, transportation to all the stops, tax, and gratuities.

Miami Book Fair presents: Speak Up. After-school creative writing workshops are taught by nationally-recognized and experienced teaching artists at Miami Dade College’s Koubek Center every Monday from 4 to 7 p.m., starting February 3 and running through April 27. Each Weekly workshop will focus on one technique or exercise. The teaching artists will offer feedback and support each week. Teens are encouraged to come every week, but each week will function as standalone workshop, so coming to only one, multiple, or all, is perfectly OK.

The focus of these workshops is to cultivate the creative writing process, from drafting to performance to publishing. Goals are to empower teens, equip them for success, and build a lasting community of brilliant young writers in South Florida. Sign up today for one or all of the Speak Up after-school workshops. Walk-ins are welcome, but spots are limited, so we recommend that you sign up early!

The program is open to all teens (ages 13-19) in South Florida, requires no prior experience, and is free of charge as it is free of homework. All students with an interest in creative writing should sign up.

Reflections of Taste Jamaica at #SoBeWFF on 2/21/20

This year for the South Beach Wine and Food Festival, we attended the Friday night party at the National Hotel called Taste Jamaica. And, wow, we did! This was easily one of the best events we have been to in a long time. There was a good crowd, but the lines for food were not too long. It was plentiful and quickly served. All of it was so good, we could not pick favorites. Hopefully they will bring it back for next year!

Come and celebrate 35 years of service to humanity and enjoy this all-inclusive Gala with premium open bar and international entertainment with José Fajardo Jr and his orchestra, silent and live auction, media and much more.

Orphans World Wide is a Global Charity organization that has been saving the lives of children around the world for over three decades with the sole financial support of one family. Orphans Worldwide (Orphans Global) is a globally recognized organization, which travels across the globe and finds the most vulnerable and abandoned children to provide care without any boundaries or restrictions. Their love and giving have no limit. Race, color, religion, and nationality do not affect the quality of care they provide. The OWW organization provides food, clothing, shoes, toys, hygiene supplies for young teenage girls, and school supplies, along with medical and surgical care. Hence, the one family that has been funding the entire organization without receiving any donations has decided to spread their wings to one million more children for the next 5 years. To achieve this goal, they would need the support of many more people than the supporting 6 siblings. The love and hope that the one family had implanted in thousands of children worldwide, can be spread to millions more with your help and support. Please help us “Change the world, one life at a time.”

Full particulars may be found, and reservations made, at http://orphansglobal.org/. For donations call us at (305) 788-5078.

Fillmore Miami Beach
1700 Washington Avenue,
Miami Beach, Florida 33139

Cost: $50 to $175 at door

To celebrate the 20th Anniversary of Design Mix, the South Florida design community will be raising the roof and taking it back old-school style with a 90’s themed fashion show. Design Mix is an annual fundraising event presented by The International Interior Designer Association (IIDA) South Florida Chapter. This year, guests will be encouraged to bring back grunge, boy bands and plaid on Saturday, April 4th, from 6:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. at The Fillmore Miami Beach.

IIDA South Florida Chapter advocates for advancements in education, design excellence, legislation, leadership, accreditation and community outreach to increase the value and understanding of Interior Design as a profession. Design Mix is the organization’s signature event which raises funds to award scholarships to exemplary interior design students, legislation advocacy efforts, and continuing educational support to their practicing professionals. The focus of the event is to pair industry members with design firms in a joint mission to fabricate wearable garments made entirely out of interior finish materials provided by event sponsors. This year’s runway show will begin at 7:30 p.m. and it will feature 25 models rocking the latest trends in textiles, wall coverings, flooring, tiles, etc. All garments will be reviewed and scored by non-industry guest judges who will present awards in various categories including: Best Use of Color, Best Design Detail, Best Use of Material, Best Performance, Most Creative, Most Nostalgic, Most Blingin’, Judge’s Choice and The Homie’s Choice. This year’s judge’s panel includes fashion designers Angel Sanchez and Rene Ruiz.

The 90’s are often referred to the happiest decade of our lifetime. America was prospering, we had the internet and of course, Britney Spears was living her best life! The luncheon will feature special guest speaker Lourdes Lopez, artistic director of Miami City Ballet. A Q & A with the company’s dancers will follow the presentation.
Lourdes Lopez was recently named one of “The Most Influential People in Dance Today” by Dance magazine. Under Lopez’s direction, Miami City Ballet has become one of the country’s premier ballet companies.

As a soloist and principal dancer with New York City Ballet, Lopez danced for two legends of the art form, George Balanchine and Jerome Robbins. Lopez is a former WNBC-TV cultural arts reporter and senior faculty member and director of student placement, student evaluation and curriculum planning at New York’s Ballet Academy East. She served on the dance faculty of Barnard College and guest taught at numerous dance institutions and festivals in the United States. In 2002, she became the executive director of the George Balanchine Foundation, and subsequently co-founded The Cuban Artists Fund, which supports Cuban and Cuban-American artists in their endeavors. In 2007 she received an award from the American Immigration Law Foundation honoring Cuban Americans for their accomplishments and contributions to American society. Lopez also co-founded Morphoses with Christopher Wheeldon in 2007 — a New York-based dance company aiming to revitalize dance through innovative collaborations with important artists from the worlds of music, visual arts, design, film and fashion; and by inviting younger and broader audiences to engage in and actively experience dance.

In 2014 Lopez was elected to serve on the Ford Foundation’s board of trustees, marking the first time an artist was elected to serve on its board and in 2011, she received the prestigious Jerome Robbins Award for her years in dance. She has served as a dance panelist for the National Endowment for the Arts.

Yarling is a rising star in the jazz community with her velvet voice, high technical skills and energetic personality.

Born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, Yarling grew up in a musical family where her musical taste was inspired by her father, who plays both the jazz organ and piano. Beginning at the age of nine, Yarling would play the violin with her father which inspired her to perform live. Yarling’s received an extensive musical education which included graduating with a B.A. in Music from Baruch College and then receiving a Master’s in music education from Columbia University. She also received private training in composition, arranging, voice and violin.

Additionally, Art Prevails Project will host a spoken word element with four poets performing original works inspired by moments in black history. Art Prevails Project is a performing and literary arts organization committed to impacting South Florida and beyond by providing engaging and authentic artistic and cultural experiences through performance and education while utilizing a multidisciplinary approach rooted in theatre and creative writing, to entertain, educate, and inspire.

Guests will also enjoy a special dance performance by MaryAnn Benjamin and choreographed by Fluxus Haus founder, Agatha Wright.

Visitors are encouraged to pass by the Bookleggers pop-up library and pick up a free book. Bookleggers mission is to permeate Miami with books. Through public access points, programming, and installations that place books in unexpected spaces, Bookleggers creates dynamic artistic and cultural experiences that increase book access and serve as a conduit for community exchange.

Also on view is HamacaS, a socially engaged project by Liene Bosquê, coordinated by Ana Clara Silva, on view from February 8 through March 29, 2020. HamacaS explores the cultural dissonance and emotional displacement experienced by immigrants in the United States. The project consists of an interactive installation at the museum that will be activated through collective hammock weaving sessions and workshops. The project will offer a critical and expansive conversation around immigration with communities in Miami.

Café Crème will host a bar with a signature MOCA cocktail and the US Census will be on-site distributing giveaways. Guests will also enjoy a pop-up photo booth and more.

The public is invited to enjoy extended activities beginning at 7:00 pm and the vibrant sounds of Nicole Yarling at 8:00 p.m., rain or shine.

This event is sponsored in part by the North Miami Community Redevelopment Agency.

Guests may also walk through MOCA’s two exhibitions, Cecilia Vicuña’s “About to Happen” and Alice Rahon’s “Poetic Invocations.” Cecilia Vicuña’s “About to Happen” traces the Chilean artist’s career-long commitment to exploring discarded and displaced materials, peoples and landscapes in a time of global climate change. The late French-Mexican surrealist painter Alice Rahon’s “Poetic Invocations” aims to contribute to the scholarship and recognition of under-explored women artists, and to the intercultural influences on European artists in exile in the Americas, whose work was often deeply marked by indigenous and archaic cultures. Both exhibitions are on view through March 29, 2020.

History Fort Lauderdale, proud steward of our community’s past by making our heritage accessible and engaging to residents and visitors, will host its 25th annual History Makers fundraiser on Tuesday, March 31, at 6 p.m., at the Superyacht Pavilion facility on the south grounds of Pier Sixty-Six Hotel & Marina (2301 SE 17th Street in Fort Lauderdale). This year’s honorees are The Denison Family (Broward Marine), Broward County yachting industry forerunners, who will receive a History Makers Pioneer Family Award and the Marine Industries Association of South Florida (MIASF), which will be honored with a Legacy Business Award for its 60 years of industry and service at the event that commends individuals and companies who have made an impact on the growth of the City of Fort Lauderdale. Previous History Maker honorees have included The Forman Family, “Alligator Ron” Bergeron, City Commissioner Steven Glassman, developer Dev Motwani, H. Wayne Huizenga, Chris Evert and Jimmy Evert, The Sun-Sentinel, Winterfest and Susan and Buddy Lochrie.

The Denison’s company, Broward Marine, and its workforce, were largely responsible for much of the marine industry that developed over the course of their 50 years of yacht construction that started on the south fork of the New River in Fort Lauderdale. In 1948, on their honeymoon, Frank and Gertrude Denison decided to buy a boat yard on the New River and shortly, thereafter, became the largest employer in Broward County, as well as the largest defense contractor in Florida. The contracts they secured for the construction of US Navy minesweepers during this time period led to the construction of large motor yachts. The Denison’s yachting business, launched in the early 1950s with the construction of the largest yacht built in the US, post WWII, the ALISA V, eventually led them to become most prolific large yacht builder in the world in 1993. The first of only two yacht builders in the US to have received this recognition.

The Marine Industries Association of South Florida (MIASF) is the largest marine trade organization in the Southeast United States dedicated to promoting, protecting, and growing the 111,000 middle class jobs in Broward County and 142,000 jobs regionally in marine businesses promoting boating lifestyles from family cruising and fishing to yachts and the goods and services that sustain them, driving the economic output to $8.9 billion in Broward County and $12 billion regionally. Created in 1961, the nonprofit trade group is focused on the sound growth of the marine industry in the South Florida Region to benefit its members, their customers, communities and the environment. The Association has over 500 members in Broward, Miami-Dade, and Palm Beach Counties and is the owner of the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show. Through the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, advocacy efforts, programs and services of MIASF have combined to raise the professionalism of the industry and awareness of its impact and contributions by the public, elected, and regulatory officials at the local, state, and federal levels. Members have fostered a reputation for the region to be known as the goods and service center of the world for the yachting and marine community.

This year’s event will also celebrate the city’s 109th birthday with cocktails, food stations and entertainment.

Tickets for this year’s 25th anniversary History Makers fundraiser are $100 (online service charges not included) and can be purchased online at http://bit.ly/HFLHistoryMakers2020 or via email at info@flhc.org. Tickets are limited.
