Forensic Architecture: True to Scale Exhibition 2/20/20

Forensic Architecture: True to Scale Exhibition
Thursday, 02/20/2020 – 09/27/2020 01:00 pm –
Museum of Art and Design at Miami Dade College
600 Biscayne Boulevard,
Miami, Florida 33132
Website
Cost: $12 adults; $8 seniors and military; $5 students (13–17) and college students (with valid ID); free for MOAD members, MDC students, faculty, and staff, and children 12 and under.

MOAD presents the first major U.S. survey of Forensic Architecture’s extraordinary work uncovering evidence of state and corporate violence.

Comprised of architects, software developers, filmmakers, journalists, lawyers, artists, and scientists, Forensic Architecture is a research agency that uses architectural software and an architectural sensibility to investigate human rights violations.

Forensic Architecture: True to Scale displays the evidence and explains the methodologies behind over a dozen Forensic Architecture investigations. While providing an overview of how advanced techniques such as photogrammetry, audio analysis, augmented reality, 3D modeling, machine learning, and crowd sourcing support their findings, the exhibition considers the complex relationship between a material fact and its representation in the public realm. Amidst what Founding Director Eyal Weizman refers to as the “dark epistemology” of a post-truth media environment, this collection of meticulously researched, carefully analyzed, and conscientiously presented evidence demonstrates that it is both possible and imperative to verify what is really happening in the world around us.

True to Scale includes the first Forensic Architecture investigation in which virtual reality is used to compel accurate witness testimony and recreate a crime scene. Co-produced by MOAD, it corresponds with the core theoretical and practical questions that will be further explored through the museum’s public programming.

In addition to a panel of experts on the architecture of border walls and refugee camps, MOAD will host a series of events that teach Forensic Architecture’s methodologies while laying the groundwork for an investigation of the alleged crimes occurring within a nearby child migrant detention center. Working with a coalition of journalists, activists, architects, and MDC students, the series will bring critical attention to the humanitarian crisis at our borders and the architectural forms that evince devastating social policies.

Forensic Architecture: True to Scale is curated by Sophie Landres. It is made possible by the support of the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation as part of its Immersive Technologies in the Arts initiative; the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs and the Cultural Affairs Council, the Miami-Dade County Mayor and Board of County Commissioners; and the State of Florida, Department of State, Division of Cultural Affairs and the Florida Council on Arts and Culture.

Forensic Architecture: True to Scale Opening Reception 2/19/20

Miami, Florida 33132

Presenting the first major U.S. survey of Forensic Architecture’s extraordinary work uncovering evidence of state and corporate violence, join MOAD at MDC for the opening reception of Forensic Architecture: True to Scale, with a special discussion by Forensic Architecture founding director Eyal Weizman.

Original music was composed and performed specifically for this work by José Pérez de Arce and Claudio Mercado, with chants by Vicuña. The original Paracas textile is in the collection of the Brooklyn Museum.

Following the film, Dr. Constantino Manuel Torres will speak on the topic of on anthropology, shamanism, and the pre-Colombian Paracas culture of the Atacama Desert. Dr. Constantino Manuel Torres, Professor Emeritus, Art and Art History Department at Florida International University, Miami, has conducted research on the connection between iconography and visionary plant use in ancient cultures of the South Central Andes since 1982. He co-authored “Anadenanthera: Visionary Plant of Ancient South America” (2006), a 4,000-year history of the use of this sacred plant, which led to the study of ayahuasca analogues in South American antiquity. One of the nation’s most beloved events, with over 100,000 annual attendees and more than two million people having participated over the festival’s tenure, the Florida Renaissance Festival has devoted 28 years to capturing the essence of the Renaissance through entertainment and living history.

Florida Renaissance Festival 2020 themed weekends include:

King Henry and his lovely and clever wife Anne, Princess of Cleves and Queen of England, both bid you Welcome to the Renaissance!

Will chaos reign and wickedness rule, or will good fortune and the kindness of man prevail? Are you a Hero or a Villain? Let the Warriors of the Light and the Armies of the Darkness meet in this epic weekend of eternal battle.

· Swashbucklers and Sirens – March 7th and 8th
Argh Mateys! All hands on deck and Avast Ye! Dead men tell no tales – the secret is out and the Swashbucklers and Sirens weekend promises to not leave anyone left at sea. Buccaneers will plunder and Sirens will serenade – gather your crew and come search for treasure while exploring unknown lands.

SWARM, the leading Miami-based event agency known for shaping South Florida’s cultural landscape through its proprietary events including everything from culinary to craft beer, is bringing the “ART” back into Wynwood Art Walk. On Saturday, January 11, 2020, Creative Director, Victor Bernadez, also known as (AKA) GOSA, is partnering with EFFEN Vodka to bring back the “Different by Design” hosted at The Wynwood Marketplace every second Saturday of the month starting with live painting at 5pm. Wynwood Art Walk starts at 12:00 p.m. and goes until 3:00 a.m.

SWARM, initially known by its initiation of the Wynwood Art Walk Block party, has taken a new approach to the arts district’s monthly event by having its own Creative Director, Victor Bernadez at the forefront of its new project – putting the ART back in The Wynwood Art Walk Block Party. With a unique talent that has been scouted and appreciated by both national and international fans, recently scouted fans as far as Belgium, Bernardez looks to bring fresh excitement and innovation back into the Wynwood art scene. The melting pot of creativity, with a reach unparalleled.

“As an artist I found myself wondering what happened to the art at ART Walk. With so much talent surrounding each day right outside our front door, I wanted to take on this project and partner with one of our top brands to highlight what our community has to offer. In Wynwood, every street displays different and ever-changing art. It’s my mission to make to create a space with a prestigious name where artists will want to be featured. I want to mentor each one into believing their work could be displayed in those bright lights.” says Victor Bernardez, Creative Director of SWARM.

EFFEN Vodka is the monthly sponsor of “Different by Design” which is set to feature specially curated artists that differ month-to-month over the course of the upcoming 12 months. These artist’s will be hand-picked by GOSA monthly from the vast selection within the community to reignite the fuel that once lit the Wynwood area and will allow for the rebirth of the arts district’s reputation. The “Different by Design” showcase featuring artists live painting will be located at The Wynwood Marketplace, will include events such as: Drink & Draw – where attendees can buy a drink and tap into their inner Picasso with a postcard copy of the artists’ live painting to be filled by one’s own imagination. With a 4×6 easel ready to set the tone for a showstopper, bystanders will experience the thrill of watching each artist paint live. The monthly event also includes an additional artist pavilion with multiple artists simultaneously painting live, presenting the perfect photo op for any Wynwood Art Walk attendee.

After years of establishing a name for itself, Wynwood has attracted quite the musical talent to perform at its various lounges, bars and nightclubs. Setting a new tone, thedeck hosts live bands, global performers and now will be featuring curated artists every 2nd Saturday of the month for Wynwood Art Walk Block Party to paint live. Starting at 12:00pm Wynwood goers can expect to see local up and comers show live previews of their raw talent, enjoy some Instagram-approved eats, and an ambiance the whole family can enjoy. An Unforgettable Evening of NON-STOP LAUGHS for Single, Divorced, or Devoted Couples! (See this show before it heads to OFF-BROADWAY)
“A Funny show about Marriage & Relationships. Go see it!” (Ray Romano – Everybody Loves Raymond)
Eternal Bachelor Peter Fogel has major commitment issues as the love of his life has just broken up with him on Valentine’s Day! Sensing his own mortality he decides to revisit the scene of all his romantic disasters with a Special Visitor who mentors him on the true meaning of commitment.

And with that decision, Fogel brings you his autographical tale of a comedian’s Quixote quest to finding and surrendering to the one woman who can transform his life: Fogel’s hysterical and critically acclaimed multi-media solo show, ‘TIL DEATH DO US PART…YOU FIRST! is Directed by Academy Award Nominee and Three-Time Emmy Award Winner CHAZZ PALMINTERI (A Bronx Tale, The Usual Suspects, Bullets Over Broadway)

Fogel laments to his audience: “The longest relationship I’ve ever had in my entire life… is with Alexa’s Amazon!”

Young or old, divorced or married…if you’ve ever been single (and that’s everyone) and want to experience (again) the feeling of finding that special person to spend the rest of your life with, then you’ll want to fasten your seat belt for 75 minutes of non-stop laughs with Peter Fogel’s ‘TIL DEATH DO US PART…YOU FIRST!

Miami Art Zine says “… A hilarious cross between “Men Are From Mars/Women Are From Venus and “Defending the Caveman!”

The NY Post says… “the single’s man, single man… who tells such hilarious stories about being single in the city… one wants to go out and find him a suitable mate!”

The Palm Beach Arts Post… “Fogel’s ingratiating delivery and inclusive approach to the subject, plus some genuinely funny observations, make ’Til Death an entertaining evening out!”

“A hysterical look at the complexity of relationships, love, & marriage – proving you can find your soulmate at any age.” Dr. Diana Kirchner, Best Selling Author of “Love in 90 Days” CBS Morning Show, Good Morning America

Let us take you back to Miami’s original playground in the 1920s. During the early 1920s, the thing Miami ~actually~ prohibited were taxes. More infamous than the mobbed-up ’50s, the cocaine-cowboy ’80s, and even the raving club scene of today, it was the most protracted and pervasive period of lawlessness and debauchery our city has ever known.

Entertainment will include a DJ, a silent film, a gambling table, and giggle water – lots of it. Open bar option all night for just $75 from 8PM to 3AM. Cocktail menus and drinks will be disguised to avoid the wandering eye of the law. Table packages start at $200 and up.

The speakeasy atmosphere and decadent outfits will inspire guests to indulge in this unique and clandestine revival of an enchanting past. Dress code is strictly enforced. Let’s ring in the New Year by living by our own rules and having even more fun… just like they did in ’20s.

With registration now in full swing, team captains are rallying their workplace teams to engage in another year of fun and healthy competition. It’s so gratifying to see so many South Florida companies continue to embrace health and wellness as part of their workplace culture. We believe that healthy employees create healthy companies; add to that a race filled with smiles and camaraderie – that’s what the Mercedes Benz Corporate Run is all about,” said Laurie Huseby, race director.

North Miami, Florida 33161
Website

The Museum of Contemporary Art North Miami (MOCA) is thrilled to welcome back Miami Big Sound Orchestra as part of the monthly “Jazz at MOCA” series on Friday, Dec. 27. Known as downtown Miami’s resident Latin Jazz big band since 2006, Miami Big Sound Orchestra combines 21st-century big band jazz with Afro-Cuban and Brazilian music, funk and soul. Their repertoire includes original compositions by Rafael “Cali” Valencia, legendary Miami bassist/composer; Chino Nunez, GRAMMY Award-winning producer; and Jaui Schneider, former pianist/composer of Ray Barretto; along with classics from legends such as the great Mario Bauzá.

The members of the Miami Big Sound Orchestra are all veteran Miami musicians who have performed and toured with top-name artists including Celia Cruz, Gloria Estefan, Issac Delgado, Jon Secada, Chayanne, Rey Ruiz, Tito Nieves, and K.C. and the Sunshine Band, among others.

The public is invited to enjoy the vibrant sounds of Miami Big Sound Orchestra, rain or shine. Guests may also walk through MOCA’s two exhibitions, Cecilia Vicuña’s “About to Happen” and Alice Rahon’s “Poetic Invocations.” Cecilia Vicuña’s “About to Happen” traces the Chilean artist’s career-long commitment to exploring discarded and displaced materials, peoples and landscapes in a time of global climate change. The late French-Mexican surrealist painter Alice Rahon’s “Poetic Invocations” aims to contribute to the scholarship and recognition of under-explored women artists, and to the intercultural influences on European artists in exile in the Americas, whose work was often deeply marked by indigenous and archaic cultures. Both exhibitions are on view from Nov. 26 through March 29, 2020.

Cost: $50 – $1600

Nikki Beach Miami Beach has just announced that it is hosting its “20 Years of Celebration” party on December 14, in honor of the global brand’s milestone moment at the venue that started it all. As Nikki Beach’s first location ever, it’s only fitting that the South of Fifth beach club destination will be throwing the grand finale of this global touring event, tied in with the brand’s signature White Party. Tickets start at $50 and are available at https://www.nikkibeachmiamievents.com.

Guests will experience all of the elements that make Nikki Beach so special: music, dining, entertainment, fashion, film and art. The day-to-night party will feature live music and entertainment, a dance troupe and specialty cocktails and wine, including the Nikki Beach x Château Minuty commemorative edition rosé bottle with custom artwork. Nikki Beach’s globally-inspired menu will be highlighted, too, and partygoers will savor the beach club’s best bites, including the brand’s oversized sushi boats, Sexy Salad and Famous Chicken Satay.

The commemorative “20 Years of Celebration” bash has visited all of Nikki Beach’s locations across the world, from Marbella to Dubai. This December, the festivities will culminate at Nikki Beach Miami Beach during the height of season. And the White Party theme will pay homage to the legendary soiree Naomi Campbell hosted in 2002 for the opening of Nikki Beach Saint Tropez with an all white dress code for her birthday. All of Nikki Beach’s locations host this signature White Party annually to kick off their season, and it has become one of the most coveted invitations for international jetsetters.

Nikki Beach Miami Beach began as a tribute to the late Nicole Penrod. What started as a beautiful garden and beach club for South Beach’s bohemian community quickly grew into the hotspot for celebrities like Michael Douglas, Leonardo DiCaprio and Madonna.

“Nikki Beach was created to celebrate the life of my daughter Nicole,” says Jack Penrod, Nikki Beach’s owner and founder. “We did not have any plans to become a global brand,” says Nikki Beach Global Chief Executive Officer, Lucia Penrod. “The magic between our family concept and our customers loyal following created a demand. It was then that we decided to strategically expand Nikki Beach worldwide, while keeping the core message behind Nikki Beach, which is a Celebration of Life.”

Today, Nikki Beach has 13 beach clubs and 5 hotels and resorts across the world, with more locations in the pipeline.
