Pioneer of the Créolité movement, Raphaël Confiant interweaves excerpts from his writings with musings on Martinican philosopher, poet, and literary critic Édouard Glissant to unpack issues underlying Where the Oceans Meet, such as the interplay between language and identity.

Raphaël Confiant was born in Le Lorrain, Martinique. He studied English and political science at the Sciences Po Aix, and law at Paul Cézanne University in Aix-en-Provence, France. During the 1970s, Confiant became a militant proponent of use of the Creole language, and later worked with Jean Bernabé and Patrick Chamoiseau to create the Créolité movement. Together, the three authors wrote the movement’s seminal text, Eloge de la créolité (In Praise of Creoleness, 1989), in addition to other theoretical texts. The Créolité movement is often characterized as a reaction to the Négritude movement, which emphasized the African origins of the Antillean people. Créolité, on the other hand, emphasizes the diversity of Antillean ancestry and cultural heritage, which also includes Chinese, Indian, and European influences. The movement seeks to understand the diverse identities and histories of the people of the Antilles through the lens of literature and language and eschews the universal in favor of a diverse view of language and identity. Confiant is a well-known writer in both Creole and French and is currently a lecturer at the University of the French West Indies and Guiana (UAG).

The exhibition proposes works of various media that incorporate abstraction as both a formal and conceptual framework to render perceptions of place. The use of abstraction facilitates readings of the process inherent in their making. This process involves elements that reference diverse notions of place – its color, materiality, use of language, and instantaneity as landscape. The summation of these notions, a conversation between the work as a whole and its constituent parts, contributes to varying degrees of legibility and evocativeness.

The participating artists are Liene Bosquê, Jenny Brillhart, Jude Broughan, Alain Castoriano, Robert Chambers, Irina Dakhnovskaia-Lawton, Lucia Del Sanchez, Genderfail, Ivan Grilo, Xavier Luján, Marron et Masqué, Juan Matos, Nicole Maynard-Sahar, Tana Oshima, Alice Quaresma, Marielle Plaisir, Carrie Sieh, Gerbi Tsesarskaia, and Cristina Victor.

On View: October 11, 2019 – March 31, 2020

Adler Guerrier (born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti; lives and works in Miami, FL) is best known for works in photography, drawing, and printmaking that explore the poetics and politics of place. Guerrier received a BFA from New World School of the Arts/University of Florida. His recent exhibitions include Coffee, Rhum, Sugar, & Gold: A Postcolonial Paradox (Museum of the African Diaspora, San Francisco), curated by Larry Ossei-Mensah and Dexter Wimberly, La Construcción de lo Posible, XIII Havana Biennial (Centro de Arte Contemporáneo Wifredo Lam, Havana), and Lines of Fracture (David Castillo Gallery, Miami). Guerrier is a resident artist at the Bakehouse Art Complex and a board member of Oolite Arts and Locust Projects.

This was the era when popular music was Cuban Music and Son Montuno was influencing music throughout the globe. From time to time, Cortadito is backed by a variety of guest musicians. LEAP Celebrates 10 Years of Second Chances for Incarcerated Women!

NPR’s James Judd to Emcee the fundraising and awareness-building event, with musical performances by Jazz Singers Leesa Richards and Brenda Alford.

LEAP (Ladies Empowerment and Action Program), the only reentry program in Miami-Dade County dedicated exclusively to women transitioning from prison, hosts the Second Chance Soiree on Sept. 26, 2019, from 6-10 p.m. at the Coral Gables Congregational Church. The festive event, which marks the 10th anniversary for LEAP, will draw attention to the serious plight of formerly incarcerated women reintegrating into society through songs and stories of compassion. Tickets are available now, and the event is open to the public.

During the event, sponsors and guests will also enjoy a cocktail reception, elegant hors d’ oeuvres, mixed media installation, and participate in a silent auction. All proceeds and donations from the Second Chance Soiree go towards LEAP’s in-prison education programming, post-release support services, and community engagement and advocacy efforts.

LEAP is distinctive, and its transformative services favorably impact communities. Women regain their footing through the organization’s entrepreneurship, employability, life skills, and trauma-informed substance abuse classes. Its secular programming allows for total diversity and inclusivity among all faiths. Since launching in 2009, LEAP has been successful in breaking the cycle of recidivism — less than five percent of LEAP graduates return to prison, in comparison with the national average in excess of 50 percent. Lowering recidivism rates translates into significant taxpayer savings, while creating safer and more stable neighborhoods.

MOAD presents a series of public programs related to its current exhibition, Where the Oceans Meet. Rather than a formal sit-down lecture, MOAD’s “Discussions In Situ” are engaging, conversational, and scholarly exhibition tours lead by a wide array of interdisciplinary experts. While pointing to specific art work and archival material on view, Tsang sparks a conversation on “The Hidden Cabrera,” highlighting Cabrera’s biography and research methods.

Where the Oceans Meet is an exhibition of modern and contemporary art that resonates with the pioneering thought of two Caribbean writers, Lydia Cabrera and Édouard Glissant. The show is comprised of an international group of artists and collectives consider notions of shifting and porous borders—and how crossing borders has shaped our world. They articulate various aspects of the two scholars’ thoughts on race, diaspora, colonialization, creolization, language, and territory, particularly with regards to Miami’s position in a world that never stops turning. Where the Oceans Meet will be on view until January 12, 2020.

Photographs – Stephen’s Deli Media Tasting on 8/27/19

For those that don’t know, the historic Stephen’s Deli in Hialeah has changed hands again, but the good news is, the new hands are good hands. The new owners are the folks who run LoKal, Kush and a bunch of other places you probably already like! We attended a media tasting there and were quite pleased with the atmosphere and the flavors we enjoyed (yes, it was free, no, that does not affect our review, though it does affect our decision to attend).

To be honest, I don’t know what “real New York deli food” should taste like, the last time I was in New York was 15 years ago, but I can say that the food here is quite good. We tasted the Classic Reuben, the Turkey Rachel, the Matzoh soup, and the Reuben croquetas. The menu is a fun mix of traditional fare alongside some Cuban and Latin fusion, like the croquetas. Definitely recommended. And, while you are there, you can take a look at all the murals in the adjoining Leah Arts District.

The documentary feature Nueva Venecia portrays the inhabitants of a small village in the Santa Marta marsh in Colombia, who live on the water and make a living by fishing. Their lives changed drastically on November 22, 2000, when a paramilitary group slaughtered 37 people and forced the other villagers to move out. In spite of the horror and the possibility of further acts of violence, the community eventually returned, choosing to face the hazards of new assaults rather than quit their way of life. Things did change, however, as fishing-boat memorials and ceremonies to honor the dead have become familiar, as have constant pleas to the authorities for justice. Something else keeps people together: soccer, played again on the field built on stilts, long hidden under water. Sport provides the only hope for a way out for many of the local youngsters, who dream of both social and economic improvement, and of being discovered by some scout or club agent to become Colombian soccer stars.

Miami has always been known for its long history of house music. Nothing against those who are comfortable sticking to certainty and query at the unknown, but we have decided to search the underground for a new musical atmosphere. What we found were four of the greatest bass producers within their area of expertise, at the very start of their nationwide Lost Dogz Off The Chain Tour. This will be Wubaholics first show in the Miami area and we plan on continuing to provide wubaholic solutions for those in need of bass music.
