Of Men and Gods is a documentary about homosexuality in Haiti, especially within the context on the Vodou religion where it is tolerated to a greater extent than in broader society. This film is a collaboration between Anne Lescot, a Haitian anthropologist, and Laurence Magloire, a Haitian film director and producer. The screening is followed by an in-person discussion and conversation with PÒTOPRENS photographer Josué Azor, facilitated by Jason Fitzroy Jeffers, Third Horizon film festival director. Coral Gables, FL- Cernuda Arte is pleased to present a stunning solo exhibition of works by Cuban-born artist, Vicente Hernández. Vicente Hernández: To Leave, or Not To Live, That Is The Question. Recent Works of Flight and Despair,
Opening Reception – Friday, August 2nd, from 6-9 pm at Cernuda Arte. The show will place a thematic focus on massive migrations of Cuban people, a contentious topic which runs centrally through the artist’s work.

While this new gathering marks the artist’s third solo show on American soil, Hernández still works from within the island of Cuba, vividly depicting the plight of its youth in their search for a better life of opportunities and freedoms.
His paintings, crafted with the vocabulary of magic realism, expose the absurdity of reality in Cuba and reinforce the intensity of hope of its people. The twenty-two canvases on view emphatically reflect a necessary voice and a true contrarian spirit.

Friday, July 26 at 8: Arts Garage presents pianist Kiki Sanchez. Sanchez is among the new generation of Afro-Peruvian Jazz musicians emerging on the national Jazz scene. Born in Lima, Peru, his musical interpretation is resounding. He leaves the listener with admiration and much anticipation for greater things to come from a musician of such high caliber.

His musical journey can be heard on his debut CD, “Dreams”. The music is enveloped in a smooth Latin Jazz format with a perfect balance of Afro-Peruvian rhythm and Jazz harmonies. He has proceeded to record seven additional albums, as varied as his “Salsa Project”, his “Jazz Big Band Project”, “Soneros del Perú”, and the devotional “I Praise You, Lord”. All have been well-recived by critics.

He has also produced an instructional DVD called “The Real Latin Piano and the introduction to Afro-Peruvian Rhythms”. In it, you’ll find essential musical knowledge that accentuates the building blocks of Latin music. It also offers a fresh introspective view on various Afro-Peruvian rhythms as applied to Jazz musicians.

Located 2000 kilometers from the Amazon and 18 hours from Rio, the city of Brasília—the capital of Brazil—is a mythical place: a concrete utopia born out of the desert. In 1956 at the rebirth of Brazilian democracy, visionary architect Oscar Niemeyer and urbanist Lúcio Costa invented an urban plan and structures that would attempt to micromanage the daily activity of human life. The unabashed goal was to create the space that would birth “the new Brazilian citizen.” Now the stark beauty of the city acts as a backdrop to isolation, changing values, and the dynamic power and politics of today’s Brazil. Les Standiford is Founding Director of the Creative Writing Program at Florida International University in Miami and the author of twenty-two books, including a series of thrillers starring hard-luck South Florida building contractor John Deal.

In Presidential Deal (1998), the First Lady, based loosely on Hillary Clinton, is kidnapped in Miami. (Don’t worry folks, it was all made up.)

Museum of Contemporary Art North Miami (MOCA) is thrilled to present Tom McCormick as part of its monthly “Jazz at MOCA” series. McCormick is a gifted multi-instrumentalist in addition to being an accomplished composer and arranger. He blends the sounds of Latin, Brazilian and funk-infused music with smooth jazz for a performance full of energy.

McCormick has been a prominent figure in the South Florida jazz scene for over 25 years. Originally from Baltimore, Maryland, McCormick studied at the acclaimed Frost School of Music at the University of Miami and soon after he graduated, he began teaching at the University. He was previously the principal saxophonist of the Miami Symphony Orchestra for many years and currently is the saxophone professor at Miami Dade College.

McCormick has performed around the world including Europe, Latin America, the Caribbean, Japan and India. McCormick has performed with some of the biggest names in the music industry including Sheila E., Arturo Sandoval, Nicole Henry, Mongo Santamaria, K.C. and the Sunshine Band, the O’Jays, Celia Cruz, Donna Summer, Patti Austin and Lou Rawls.

In anticipation of the 18th year of the Miami Spice Restaurant Program, the Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau (GMCVB) introduces the second Mash Up of the culinary series, a collaboration between Chef Michael Beltran of Ariete and Chef Victoriano Hernandez of Fooq’s. The duo will join forces to create a menu that pairs Ariete’s New American style with Fooq’s Persian-French influences to highlight dishes from their upcoming Miami Spice menus in advance of the August 1, 2019 kickoff.

The one-night-only dining experience will take place on Thursday, July 18, 2019 at Ariete, Chef Michael Beltran’s culinary gem in the idyllic Coconut Grove neighborhood. The three-course meal – featuring two dishes per course, one from each chef – will allow diners to experience the globally influenced cuisine that has won the hearts and stomachs of Miami diners. Priced at $55 per person (excluding tax, tip and additional beverage purchases) the dinner is inclusive of cocktails from Miami Spice sponsors Stella Artois, JNSQ Rose, JNSQ Sauvignon and ABSOLUT® JUICE Strawberry & Apple – brought to you by Planet Earth’s Favorite vodka.

Sports Illustrated Swimsuit is returning to Miami for the 2019 annual in-person open casting call at the W South Beach. History Fort Lauderdale, proud steward of our community’s past by making our heritage accessible and engaging to residents and visitors, will host its next New River Marketplace on Saturday, July 27, from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. The New River Marketplace will continue to run on the fourth Saturday of each consecutive month on the historic campus, in front of the New River Inn (231 SW Second Avenue) and along the Riverwalk.

Set under the shade of historic live oaks, the Marketplace will feature more than 52 vendors offering a selection of original art, antiques, furnishings, collectables, clothing, jewelry, luxury bath fixtures and more. Vendors will also showcase specialty plants including orchids and succulents plus pet supplies, organic food and natural health and beauty products. Gourmet bites and beverages will be available to purchase onsite. Live music and a tattoo artist will add another artistic dimension to this community event.

Saturday July 6 at 8 PM: Trombonist William Cepeda leads his ensemble in an evening of “Afro-Rican Jazz.” Known as a cultural icon of Puerto Rico, Grammy-nominated artist and composer William-Cepeda revolutionized the field of Latin music in 1992 with his introduction of Afro-Rican Jazz, an innovative blend of progressive jazz, world music and traditional Puerto Rican roots. His ensemble has toured all over the world, performing in jazz festival such as Montreux, NorthSea and Tabarka, as well as, in performing arts venues and clubs.

Born and raised in Loiza, the heart of “little Africa” in Puerto Rico, William Cepeda’s artistic excellence as a composer and artistic visionary, his authenticity and advocacy for rigorous research and comprehensive documentation of Puerto Rican music, dance, and culture have earned him multiple awards, grants and recognition from the Institute of Puerto Rican Arts & Culture, Meet The Composer, the National Endowment for the Arts, the New York State Music Fund at Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors, American Composers Orchestra, American Composers Forum, and the Association of Hispanic Arts.

A protégé of Dizzy Gillespie, William Cepeda was a member of his United Nation Orchestra, and Cepeda’s musical influences include artists like Miriam Makeba, Tito Puente, Paquito D’Rivera, Eddie Palmieri and Lester Bowie. In addition to world music and jazz, William Cepeda’s oeuvre includes contemporary classical music with his introduction of Bomba Sinfonica, a full-length orchestral work of symphony, opera, choir and soloists.

About Chapman Partnership: Chapman Partnership operates two Homeless Assistance Centers with 800 beds located in Miami and Homestead. Collectively these two Centers serve approximately 5,000 men, women and families with children annually. We help the homeless by providing a comprehensive support program that includes emergency housing, meals, health, dental and psychiatric care, day care, job training, job placement and assistance with securing stable housing. The average length of stay for single adults is 89 days and families with children 133 days. AAF Greater Fort Lauderdale and the Palm Beaches will host A Deep Dive on Curiosity, a not-so-fancy-pants luncheon and chat with Noreen Morioka and Nicole Jacek, co-heads of Wieden+Kennedy, for an exploration on curiosity fueling creativity and their approach to design. The event will consist of a discussion with Morioka and Jacek about their work, the pleasant consonance of their first names and one weird trick to change your life and career forever. Following the discussion, guests are invited to stick around for a Q&A with the speakers.

As co-heads of W+K Design, Morioka and Jacek together, lead the hundred-plus employees of the design studio located at the agency’s Portland headquarters. Morioka most recently served as chief creative officer for San Francisco-based luxury skincare line Tatcha while Jacek previously ran the design agency NJ(L.A.). Morioka calls the design studio “the agency’s secret weapon.” Earlier in her career, Jacek worked at prominent design firms including Sagmeister & Walsh and karlssonwilker. Morioka was a co-founder and spent 25 years at AdamsMorioka, partnering with Sean Adams, and also served in top roles in AIGA LA, receiving the AIGA Medal in 2014.

Kick-off your Independence Day weekend celebrations with a note-worthy performance from the gifted young artists of the Miami Classical Music Festival. Since its 2013 inception, the Miami Classical Music Festival (MCMF) has been proud to establish Miami as a premier destination for elite young classical musicians seeking the highest level of musical training from the world’s leading classical artists.

The performance will include a 65-piece orchestra and four Broadway solo singers. The orchestra will appear on Lincoln Road as a pop-up performance and gradually grow from a few musicians to a full-scale orchestra. The performance will start with a vibrant rendition of the opening of Game of Thrones. Following the pop-up portion, the orchestra will perform a concert with Patriotic and Broadway standards, including West Side Story Selections and Glitter and Be Gay.

Join us on the second Monday of every month for a group bike ride with Conte’s Bike Shop!

First we drink, then we ride, then we drink some more and host a RAFFLE with giveaways from both Conte’s and the brewery.

Ride starts at 8pm and goes till 9:30pm. Starts and ends at the brewery. 10-15 mile loop around downtown with a break in the middle. This is a chill pace, roughly 8-12mph, so all bikes are welcome!

History Fort Lauderdale, proud steward of our community’s past by making our heritage accessible and engaging to residents and visitors, will present “The Art of Tim Forman: Landscape Paintings” from Sunday, July 7 – Saturday, September 28, 2019. Forman’s colorful and impressionist works will be on display at the New River Inn (231 Southwest Second Avenue).

The grandson of renowned Davie dairy farmer, Hamilton Forman, Tim grew up in South Florida. Some of his favorite pastimes were visiting the beach, fishing in Biscayne Bay with his dad, and stargazing. He first picked-up the brush at nine years old under the instruction of Peter Olsen. By 17, Forman was receiving commissions. Primarily a self-taught artist, Forman’s work is the result of dedicated practice. He uses field sketches, plein air paintings, and photographs to compose his pieces that are painted in layers with both knife and brush. He creates his landscapes to portray the splendor and simplicity of the natural world around us. Through his work, Tim seeks to lift the spirits and inspire awe above our day-to-day lives.

The Jar o’Duck was one of the iconic dishes at the Federal. It landed the Federal and its team on Bravo’s Best New Restaurant competition and the Food Network’s Diner’s, Drive In’s and Dives; plus garnered a myriad of accolades nationwide.

The JOD was a Thanksgiving inspired duck rillette. Hudson Valley duck is slow cooked with winter spices, blended it into a spreadable mousse and served with torched marshmallow, candied sweet potatoes and toast points.

Now that the Federal has been closed for three years, it’s time to bring it back with a Phuc Yea twist and create a 2019 rendition of it.

Redesigners will donate the pieces which will be available for purchase during the Salvation Army’s Annual Red Shield ReDesign Bash at The Galleria at Fort Lauderdale on Friday, October 11, from 6 pm till 9 pm.

“The Salvation Army of Broward County is excited to present this creative fund-raising event that benefits our vital programs and services,” said Major Stephen Long, Area Commander for The Salvation Army of Broward County. “It is an honor to work with the stars and heroes supporting our mission and those we serve.”

Kick-off your Independence Day weekend celebrations with a note-worthy performance from the gifted young artists of the Miami Classical Music Festival. Since its 2013 inception, the Miami Classical Music Festival (MCMF) has been proud to establish Miami as a premier destination for elite young classical musicians seeking the highest level of musical training from the world’s leading classical artists.

The performance will include a 65-piece orchestra and four Broadway solo singers. With heavy hearts, we all shared in the loss of Sweet Liberty’s founding Father, John Lermayer, who was taken from us way too soon – just last year. John was the force and spirit behind Sweet Liberty, and an example of selfless and charitable action. A dedicated father, award-winning bartender, mentor, friend and die-hard New York Rangers fan, John was best known for his animated personality, enticing cocktails, his love for people, travel, and his son, Radek. Guest pricing for the VIP event is $180 for adults and $50 for children (12 and under). Member admissions are $145 for adults and $45 for children (12 and under). VIP tables of 10 are available.
The Biltmore Hotel’s golf members can experience the evening from the luxurious and unique Private Members Lounge on the 19th hole of the recently renovated golf course. This exceptional venue lends itself to a one-of-a-kind fireworks viewing and an all-you-can-eat buffet with an open bar and outdoor/indoor seating. Pricing for members is $125 for adults and $35 for children (12 and under).
During the celebration, the hotel’s renowned restaurants will also be serving American favorites including a 3-course chef’s menu at Palme D’or for $75 per person, as well as special breakfast, lunch and dinner menus by Chef de Cuisine, Beppe Galazzi, at Fontana.

Join the worldwide celebration of music on Lincoln Road Friday, June 21 with Make Music Miami. The city is once again taking part in this global music festival, which began as Fête De La Musique in Paris in 1982 – a celebration to welcome summer with music. Lincoln Road will host to more than 40 complimentary performances throughout the promenade as part of the city-wide event and that includes concerts on streets, sidewalks, beaches and parks across the destination!

Lincoln Road’s musical performances include a showcase by local label Public Works, Spotify-featured artist Rick Moon Country Gold’s renowned DJ Oly, known for features on Fuse TV and Nickelodeon and many more.
