FSQ – Outside Garden

A FSQ Special Tribute to our brother Sa’d The Hourchild Ali

FSQ (Soul Clap Records / New York City)
Sergio Santos (Funky People, Get Physical / New York City)
Los Negros (Soul Clap Records / Miami)
Wendy Escobar (Mood Swing / Los Angeles)
+ Special Guest

FSQ (Soul Clap Records) DJ sets draw upon on their extensive catalog of remix and original productions and quality dance music across a variety of styles including funk, disco, house, northern soul, and their own brand of Sly and Robbie influenced new wave, dubbed “Caribbean Disco”. This Miami Music Week Party 2019 pays tribute to the late legendary FSQ and Parliament-Funkadelic member Sa’d ‘The Hourchild’ Ali who passed away unexpectedly last year. FSQ DJs are Chuck Da Fonk and Chas Bronz. Also expect one of Sa’d’s favorite legendary DJs and friends to throw a special set TBA night of event.

Also FSQ selected some of the best talent for honor Sa’d’s legacy – for instance, Sergio Santos, a name in electronic music that has become synonymous with deep techno, dark disco, funk, and classic house with unique sounds and other world selections. Taking influence from both the United States and Portugal’s dance music scenes, Sergio has a sound unique to his life experiences and surrounding environments. Sergio and Sa’d last played together at Art Basel 2017. Sergio’s wonderful new concept is FUNKY PEOPLE, a diverse conglomerate of artists, hosting weekly and monthly residencies throughout NYC, providing the soundtrack to this FUNKY life and celebrating love and friendship.

Los Negros are record label mates of FSQ via Soul Clap / Crew Love. Their sets present the finest rare and classic selections across genres spanning house, disco, funk, latin, and soul. Miami locals, they’ve also been holding down 305 parties like Scooch at Coyo Taco, 1-800-Lucky and Vagabond Miami and their music has graced several soirees at Barter Wynnwood in the past. They made their official Soul Clap Records debut in 2017 on the Soul Clap led compilation “ThreeOhFive Life” including cuts from both Los Negros, and Shane Vincent solo. Los Negros are also known for their deeply funky “Summer Edits” series on Crew Love.

Queens New York City born Wendy Escobar, another dear friend of FSQ’s, was championed by Sa’d The Hourchild Ali for her production and DJ talent. Now Los Angeles based, Wendy first became a regular name among house heads as the voice of Traxsource Live with over 4 Million online and FM radio Listeners. Wendy now hosts her own radio Show, “Mood Swing”, signed to the acclaimed “This Is Distorted” alongside Defected Radio, Deadmau5 and Drumcode. A passionate digger and lover of the old school, Wendy plays house, techno & deep house in both digital and vinyl formats, mixed with a healthy dose of dance classics.

New River Inn at History Fort Lauderdale
231 SW 2nd Avenue,
Fort Lauderdale, Florida 33301

Cost: $100 per person

History Fort Lauderdale, proud steward of our community’s past by making our heritage accessible and engaging to residents and visitors, will honor The Forman Family, Broward County pioneers and early developers, and Fort Lauderdale Commissioner, District #2, Steven Glassman during its History Makers 2019 fundraiser set for Tuesday, April 30, at 6 p.m., at the New River Inn. The event spotlights individuals who have made an impact on the growth of the City of Fort Lauderdale.

For over a century, the Forman family has been major contributors to the development of Fort Lauderdale and Broward County. Ever since Hamilton and Blanche Collins Forman arrived in 1910, they, and their descendants, have played leading roles in the fields of agriculture, business, water management, education, public service and philanthropy. Dr. Charles Forman and his brother Hamilton Forman were Broward’s most powerful political figures from the 1950s to the 1990s. When their pioneer dairy farms and pastures were closed to facilitate the building of Florida’s Turnpike in the mid-1950s, the family turned their attention toward education and building a world-class education complex on their land. Today, the former farmland houses campuses of Florida Atlantic University, Florida International and the University of Florida’s Broward complexes, Nova elementary, middle and high schools, Broward Community College and Nova Southeastern University.

Fort Lauderdale City Commissioner, District #2, Steven Glassman, has been a foremost advocate of historic preservation, arts and culture and philanthropy in Broward County for close to 25 years. For 11 years, Glassman was an administrator for the Broward County Cultural Division where he worked closely with elected officials and business leaders to further the quality of life in all of Broward’s major cities through the arts and culture. This work included serving on advisory boards in Hollywood, Miramar, and Pembroke Pines. SSF 12’s theme, #WordIsBond, explores how in the digital age words have no boundaries and comments on how because of this, words are more powerful than ever before in our history. The open admission showcase will experience the rich cultural diaspora that they have come to expect from the SSF’s signature event: women dancers, poets, visual artists, vocalists, and a female DJ, all representing different cultures and unique voices. This year’s theme, #WordIsBond, will take center stage, weaving in, out and in between dancers’ limbs, peeking out from visual works, and swirling through the air in sync with live musical notes.

AVENTURA, Florida 33180

Saturday March 30 at 8:30 PM: Dance NOW! Miami presents their spring show, “Program II: Contemporanea 2019”, featuring “(B)Orgia: Decadence and Decay” at the Aventura Arts and Cultural Center, 3385 NE 188th Street, Aventura 33180.

The machinations of the Borgias in the 15th and 16th century form the basis of this new dance work, from power grabs to lavish displays of elegance and beauty, contrasted against a background of betrayal and subterfuge. The corrupting influence of power and the lurid underbelly of society might seem like dark and heavy themes for a dance performance. But coming from South Florida’s leading contemporary company, Dance NOW! Miami, and in today’s political climate, their newest evening on Saturday, March 30, at the Aventura Arts & Cultural Arts Center, promises to be another fascinating and forward-leaning one. Program II: Contemporanea 2019, will feature the world premiere of (B)ORGIA: Decadence and Decay, inspired by the real life story of the famous Italian Renaissance-era family, choreographed by Dance Now Artistic Co-Directors Diego Salterini and Hannah Baumgarten.

The program will also include a reconstruction of Daniel Lewis’ classic There’s Nothing Here of Me But Me; and the world premiere of Baumgarten’s Fire Within, Fire Without: Dido on the Pyre; and an as yet untitled world premiere piece from Salterini.

There’s Nothing Here of Me but Me, originally performed by Daniel Lewis’ own New York-based company in 1980, is a reflective work, made up of small sections strung together by a common theme – the aloneness or estrangement of life in the theater. It is essentially autobiographical. Daniel Lewis will make a cameo appearance in the performance.

Fire Within, Fire Without: Dido on the Pyre is an expanded version of a duet Baumgarten workshopped this past summer at Interlochen Center for the Arts, in collaboration with composer Federico Bonacossa, who uses the ancient instrument Viola de Gamba for the score. It is a retelling of the Roman myth, chronicling the tale of a couple’s passionate love and Dido’s tragic suicide.

Salterini’s new piece is a luscious ensemble work for six members of the company, a delicate and poetic dance built around the music of South African composer Phillip Miller.

The Aventura Arts and Cultural Center is at 3385 NE 188th Street, Aventura 33180. Tickets are $35 general admission, $15 students (at the box office in-person only). Regular price tickets can be purchased in advance online at http://tinyurl.com/DanceNowAventura and by phone at (877) 311-7469, or in-person tickets at the Center box office. Saturday, March 16, 2019 – 8:00 p.m. John Scofeilds Combo 66 comes to Bailey Hall. Scofield is one of the most influential and innovative guitarists of his generation. He has spent the last 40+ years blazing a trail through the post-fusion wilderness, bringing his singular voice to a variety of different projects. His hallmark is his masterful improvising, and his music generally falls somewhere between post-bop, funk-edged jazz, and R&B.

Scofield’s résumé reads like a who’s who of the last 40 years of jazz. After graduating from the Berklee School of Music, his first recording was with Gerry Mulligan and Chet Baker. He then replaced Pat Metheny in Gary Burton’s band and soon he would be performing with the likes of Charles Mingus, Billy Cobham, and Herbie Hancock, and Miles Davis, with whom he had an influential stint from 1982-85 that placed him firmly in the foreground of jazz consciousness as a player and composer.

South Florida JAZZ, the area’s premier jazz organization, continues its 27th season of presentation, and the second season of “South Florida JAZZ at Bailey Hall,” with the venerable JOHN SCOFIELD. The indomitable, genre-bending guitarist brings his new quartet, Combo 66, to South Florida to the delight of his legions of fans.

Bailey Hall is located on the A. Hugh Adams Central Campus at 3501 SW Davie Rd. in Davie and offers free parking. Tickets are $40-$50; $10 for students under 25 with valid I.D.; they are available by visiting southfloridajazz.org or baileyhall.org or contacting the Bailey Hall box office at (954) 201-6884. Savage Ancient Seas, opening March 8, 2019, will transport guests to a North America of 70 million years ago, when the last of the great dinosaurs roamed the Earth and a shallow sea spread across the middle of the continent. It is the spectacular, strange creatures of this sea; giant reptiles, fish, squid, and clams; that are the subject of this exciting exhibition.
In partnership with Triebold Paleontology, Inc., Miami Seaquarium has developed an ancient underwater environment where visitors can experience enormous, vicious sea monsters of the Cretaceous Period. The exhibition includes more than 50 prehistoric marine fossils, both cast and real specimens, mounted in extraordinary three-dimensional displays. The skeletons are mounted dramatically, many suspended from the ceiling above, immersing visitors inside an ancient aquarium of sorts.
The creatures on exhibit include: several mosasaurs (marine lizards which only lived during the Late Cretaceous), including the 45-foot long Bunker Tylosaurus, the largest mosasaur ever discovered in North America; a school of Pachyrhizodus, vicious fish nearly 6 feet long; and Archelon, which with a 17-foot flipper-span is the largest turtle of any kind ever discovered.
Sampling the educational kiosks stationed throughout the exhibition, visitors can learn the story of how these creatures lived, and how most of them appear to have become extinct, along with the dinosaurs. Visitors can also learn how the animals sank to the bottom of the sea when they died, where they were buried in chalky layers of sediment to eventually fossilize.

Sonic conductor Lee Burridge will be assembling a slew of labelmates to join him in supplying ethereal soundtracking throughout the day-into-night soirée.

Mystic leaders Bedouin will be joining Lee for All Day I Dream’s 2019 Miami edition, along with Tale + Tone co-founder Hoj, and the rising Newman-each of which are proven leaders in the melodic house and tech arena.

2018 represented yet another unprecedented year for the All Day I Dream camp, who continued to make headway into new countries and locales across the globe. In addition to a successful return to newer destinations like Chicago and Dubai and showcases at prime festivals like Secret Solstice, BPM and ADE, the brand also debuted in cities like Mykonos, Ibiza, Istanbul, and Las Vegas-cementing its status as a global force for deeper, emotive shades of dance music. Dreamy décor, unbridled positive energy from guests and performers, and emphasis on connection via music translates to its reputation as one of the world’s best parties and a place where guests are guaranteed to blissfully lose themselves under the beaming sun.

The All Day I Dream label continues to grow as well, with an unrelenting commitment from Lee to supporting new and well-established artists that are breaking the status quo musically. One such example is the recent Adagio EP from Double Touch, a new project from Mark Olsen and classical pianist Van-Anh Nguyen that fuses classical into underground dance music. Other recent releases include Death On The Balcony’s landmark Shift The Perspective EP, and Sebastien Leger’s anthemic Underwater Rocket. The latter climbed deep house charts and later became one of the label’s top records of 2018.

Saturday, March 16th, 2019, 4.30pm – 5.30pm

Little Haiti Cultural Complex- 212 NE 59th Terrace, Miami, FL (on the Outdoor Stage)

Biosphere is a three-act saga named: “The Alpha”, “Sapiens”, and “The Omega”. By mixing hip-hop, breakdance and contemporary dance, Biosphere retraces the evolution of the human being and the creation of Earth. In differenciated tempos, the dancers offer an interpretation of animals’ shapes and movements, insects, humans, and fantastic creatures.

This workshop will enable students to learn about the scenography of such a dance project, from the dance itself to the clothes, the soundtracks and the lights. Participants will learn about the evolution of Human beings, in the context of the “Echo-Natures” edition of the Tout-Monde Festival. The teenagers will be invited to learn some dance and break-dance movements, through a dedicated class taught by the dancers. Cannibal Desire responds to the powerful pulsions, longings and fantasies of a violence from another time. In this project, the dimension of power defines an ambition which aims at multiplying new sensations and experiences, free of any hierarchy and form of control. The impetus of cannibal desire thus becomes, for the Caribbean artists, a state of consciousness, a way to consider the world.

Through selected paintings, sculptures, installations, photographs and videos, the curators Jean-Marc Hunt and Marie Vickles explore a poetic state of transe, similar to an unlimited fantasy with all sorts of possibilities. The exhibition Cannibal Desire was first shown in 2018 at the Fondation Clément in Martinique, focusing on emerging artists from Guadeloupe. Now travelling to Miami, the exhibition is expanding to artists from Martinique, French Guiana, Haiti, Mexico and Venezuela.

Raranaval is a collective performance in the streets, taking the form of a phenomenal procession. RARA is a popular street procession with dance and music celebrating the end of carnival in Haiti. Bodies are highlighted in colorful costumes to transcend social taboos and question borders between modernity and tradition in a public space. Overall, it is a collective response to contemporary individualist practices and habits.

Performing in Paradise Plaza in the Design District is a symbolic act of reappropriation of a gentrificated neighborhood. Through rhythmic dances, chants and sounds of drums, spectators in the streets will be invited to join this reappropriation act in an intergernerational and uniting spirit. RARA costumes will resonate with contemporary fashion designers and art of the Design District.

Thursday, 03/14/2019 – 07:30 pm –

Miami, Florida 33130

Yué is the name of all the women who ever invest and occupy with their body a piece of public space: in this case, PAMM’s waterfront. Myriam Soulanges and Anne Meyer found the bodies and gestures of Yué thanks to stories of women they met during residencies in French Guiana and Guadeloupe. Those stories are now shared with other women from the Caribbean and from Miami. Myriam Soulanges and Anne Meyer show a work of feminine/artistic engagement in a tormented context of social movements and climate change. Hurricanes Irma and Maria have also influenced Yué#sorority, and later on visual artist Guy Gabon joined the project. Forced migrations increase women’s vulnerability and exacerbates inequalities. They need our attention today. The choreographic thread of Yué#Sorority is reconstructed in Miami with volunteer performers who have been meeting up for two weeks in Little Haiti Cultural Center in Little Haiti and the Koubek Center in Little Havana during dance and sewing workshops with the artists.
