“With Maqueque, Canadian Jane Bunnett brings together an all-female band of Cuban all-stars for a sublime synthesis of modern jazz with a Cuban soul.” – Raul da Gama, Latin Jazz Network

Thirty years! That’s how long soprano saxophonist-flutist Jane Bunnett has been involved with, immersed in, and dedicated herself to the music of Cuba.
The latest chapter in Jane’s excursion is Maqueque, Jane’s exciting, energetic, all-female, all-Cuban sextet. “Everything I’ve done has led up to this group, which is the perfect vehicle for now,” Jane says with pride. Brought together and led by Jane, all of the five players have grown into a tight ensemble and individually blossomed into confident composers. After winning a 2014 JUNO Award (the Canadian equivalent of a GRAMMY) for their eponymously named first recording, the 2017 sophomore release for Maqueque, “Oddara,” nominated for a 2018 GRAMMY® for Best Latin Jazz Album, expands upon the Afro-Cuban format established on the first effort, and further exhibits the superb collective talent that comprises this acclaimed, energetic group. Their invitations to two of the most prestigious jazz festivals in 2018, the Newport Jazz Festival and the Monterey Jazz Festival, also further validate Jane Bunnett as a prominent exponent of Afro-Cuban music optimized for global consumption.

Funding for South Florida JAZZ is provided in part by a grant from the Broward County Board of County Commissioners as recommended by the Broward Cultural Division

About Sergio’s Cuban
After an extensive search, Sergio’s Cuban awarded the rights to Cuban Manna, LLC for Dade, Broward and Palm Beach Counties. The development group is led by operator Manny Rodriguez who was the first person to bring Domino’s Pizza and Baskin Robbins to Latin America. Mr. Rodriguez has partnered with Altis Cardinal’s principals Frank Guerra and AJ Suarez. Both AJ and Frank currently have over $1.5 billion dollars in real estate development throughout the United States and were excited to be part of launching the growth of Sergio’s Cuban.

Under CEO Carlos Gazitua’s vision, Sergio’s Cuban is breaking all the rules. The ethos behind his bold new concept? “A Fresh Take on Cuban.” Diners will queue up and customize the ingredients in their dish while overseeing the process. Ropa Vieja, Citrus Grilled Chicken, Organic Quinoa, Cauliflower Rice or Sergio’s award-winning Steak or Cuban Sandwich; there are no wrong answers as hungry patrons are emboldened to make the call. Sergio’s Cuban lives in a world of authentic yet unique (i.e. classic cafecito v. newly launched nitro café con leche on tap; or the traditional guava pastelitos and croquetas v. oven-baked empanadas of carne and maduros or vaca frita).

The new fast-casual concept has already opened in Florida International University, American Airlines Arena, Ft. Lauderdale Airport and will now be launching new locations throughout South Florida and beyond, beginning with North Miami–its first retail establishment.

John Chowning is the musician and researcher whose discovery led to the first electronic music synthesizers, which have since produced sounds that revolutionized all genres of music. His FM algorithm gives today’s electronic synthesizers and organs the ability to simulate wide ranging musical textures and sounds, including the human voice.
Los Angeles, California based Violist Diana Wade and Mezzo-soprano Jennifer Beattie will perform contemporary works by groundbreaking new music composers Beglarian, Norman, Saariaho, Sciarrino, Schankler, as well as Wade’s original compositions. Diana has been praised for playing with “both athletic and operatic ferocity with a physical force that shook her and a sonic one that practically shook the walls”.
This concert is presented in collaboration with Foundation for Emerging Technologies and Arts as part of their FETA FM FEST celebrating Stanford Professor John Chowning and the 50th anniversary of his groundbreaking invention Frequency Modulation synthesis.

Grillin N’ Chillin kicks off BBQ season with a full-blown countryside event that’s free for the entire family. Whether you’re craving backyard barbecue spare ribs, a southern brisket or a mouthwatering pulled pork sandwich, Grillin N Chillin has compiled 40-50 BBQ vendors from around town offering everything from Memphis style barbecue to Brazilian churrasco. Celebrating its 4th anniversary, this year’s festival will take place at the Wynwood Marketplace, more commonly known for hosting Wynwood Art Walk’s block party.

At Grillin’s Kitchen Lab, South Florida’s premier pit masters will take center stage to smoke the competition out at this year’s BBQ Cook Off. In between cooking demos, their saucy host will perform a ROAST comedy show. In addition, they will pit two local backyard chefs and their best burger recipe at Miami’s Best Backyard Burger competition. Those interested in participating should register their recipe at WynwoodBBQFest.com. For the first time ever, Grillin N’ Chillin will have a Veggie Corner, where Miami’s top, vegetarian and vegan eateries will showcase their menu. While kids enjoy the Family Fun Zone, adults can relax at The Pit, a pop-up BBQ-infused sports bar that will have bars and live music, or they can “Get Lost in the Sauce” at the huge sauce bar. Be sure to pick up some SWARM Bar Bucks online to save money on mixed drinks (($25 for $45 value at the bar). Also, bring your furry pups, because the Hot Dogz playground will have plenty of treats for them to enjoy. In addition, the Animal Adoption Truck will be on site for those looking to take home a pet. To round off a day of good BBQ, Grillin N’ Chillin has compiled a number of popular dessert vendors who will be ready to satisfy your sweet tooth.

Perhaps the coolest feature at this year’s Grillin N’ Chillin is both the humanitarian and ecological stand that it’s going to take. SWARM, the creators of this festival, will set up a Miami Rescue Mission tent, so that people can sponsor a meal for a hungry person. In addition, it will be “going green” by partnering with Debris Free Oceans to become a zero-waste event. “To date, no other event in South Florida has taken this into consideration, so we’re excited to have proper sorting, composting and recycling stations in addition to other green efforts,” says Tony Albelo, CEO at SWARM.

Sprung! is back for 2018 at a new Wynwood location, offering the unlimited craft beer samples everyone craves, and a brand-new theme. Beer and sports have always been a winning combination, so SWARM has brought the two together to make this annual Sprung! Spring Beer Festival, the most fun, free-spirited, beer-tasting event in town. Over 15 million ounces of beer have been served in the five years of Sprung, and for 2018, people can expect to see more beer games, more entertainment, more cooking demos, more food, and naturally, more beer!

Beer enthusiasts from all over go for the unlimited beer tasting of over 300 craft beers; others go for some crazy fun. Whatever their reason, one hundred breweries have already signed up, and many are bringing their extra special, limited release beers. Now taking place at the Wynwood Marketplace, beer lovers can play against their friends in a variety of games such as Flip Cup, 2-person Beer Pong, 1-on-1 Beer-in-Hand H.O.R.S.E., Cornhole and other friendly games. Dare to compete for awesome beer prizes in the pong and flip cup tournaments run by CLUBWAKA, Miami’s premier adult-rec leagues, and hosted by Miami’s Instagram craft beer diva, @Brew.Babe

Other Sprung! favorites include The Kitchen Lab, which will offer cooking demos and samplings from some of the best South Florida’s chefs showing us how to make dishes that either use craft beer as an ingredient or pair well with beer. The Thrifter Marketplace will feature artisan-crafted goods and artwork, and the mainstage will showcase live music and DJ’s. In addition, Miami’s food trucks will be present to offer their best bites! While everyone is busy sampling beer, eating and having fun, Sprung! creators will be working towards becoming a zero waste event with the help of Debris Free Oceans. A master trumpeter “uniquely poised to reconcile jazz and Arabic music without doing either harm” –the Wire

Iraqi- American musician Amir ElSaffar has created techniques to play on the trumpet the microtones and ornaments found in Arabic music but not typically heard on brass. As a composer, he uses this to create an innovative approach to harmony and melody, seen in his commissions for jazz ensembles, Chamber Orchestras, and Middle Eastern Ensembles alike.

In 2018, this annual series returns in collaboration with Miami Dade College’s MDC Live Arts. It invites audiences into a meditative space through instrumental, traditional and innovative sounds from the Middle East. With support from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation’s Knight Arts Challenge and the Doris Duke Foundation, The Rhythm Foundation and MDC Live Arts create an opportunity to build a connection with cultures primarily in the public eye for conflict zones. Victoria Rogers, Vice President of Arts for Knight Foundation, said: “Few things can bring people together like the arts. Events like this series are a great prism for exploring our and other cultures, and for finding the threads that unite us all.”

In an immersive environment, the audience surrounds performers in an in-the-round stage setup. The evening also features culture-specific, traditional snacks and sweets to engage the audience in a multi-sensory experience.

Aim and Scope
Catalyst is playing a vital role in most of the chemical reaction. Catalysis is the centre face of synthesis of any substance from academic research to industry. A variety of products such as medicine, chemicals, fuels, polymers and many more which are highly useful for human need will not be feasible in the absence of catalysts. Chemical industries widely use catalysis process. Chemical Industries has exploited the catalyst to produce their required products. And Traditional catalysis process has many demerits such as:
• High cost
• It causes pollution to the environment
• Tough to separate from the product
• Ruined by impurities
• They poison the product some time
Green Chemistry and Catalysis
Green Chemistry provides an exceptional platform for the development of innovative research and work on the development of alternative sustainable technologies.
These have led to the development of environmentally friendly and economical chemical processes in chemical industries. Development in Green Chemistry has able to make the things easy. Green chemistry also called as sustainable chemistry can be defined as process of chemical science and technology which is utilized to manufacture different desired products with sustainable, safe, non-polluting, consumes minimum amount of materials and energy and at the same time producing very less or no waste. It reduces the use and generation of hazardous substances in the manufacturing or application of any chemical product.
Green chemistry is an interdisciplinary subject, which combines chemistry, chemical engineering, toxicology, and ecology. Development in Green Chemistry has led to the innovation of new catalysis process which has high performance, economically efficient, and minimum consumption of resources. This green catalyst has High performance not only with Environmentally Prospective but also with economic efficiency and minimum consumption of resources. The application catalysis has reduced toxicity.

Do Not Resist is an urgent documentary that explores the militarization of local police departments—in their tactics, training, and acquisition of equipment—since 9/11. With unprecedented access to police conventions, equipment expos, and officers themselves, filmmaker Craig Atkinson, the son of a SWAT team member, crafts an eye-popping nonpartisan look at the changing face of law enforcement in America. This film merges the arts with contemporary and critical social issues in the U.S. today. Its creators see the film as an opportunity to create dialogue among criminal and social-justice advocates, policy makers, police leadership, and the public. In short, they see this film as a tool for education, discussion, planning, and action towards police reform in our communities.

As Cotopaxi spews ash, issuing an eerie penumbra over Quito and threatening to erupt, a young woman confronts dormant familial conflicts in Ecuadorian writer-director Juan Sebastián Jacome’s poignant new drama.
Desperate for a place to store her things as volcanic disaster looms, Caridad turns to her long-estranged Galo father for help. Galo abandoned Caridad’s mother long ago and is eager to make amends, but questions concerning the nature of his transgressions linger, straining communication between father and daughter and casting grave doubts over the possibility of reconciliation.
Alternating between the stunning spectacle of Cotopaxi and the uneasy intimacy of Caridad and Galo’s reunion, Cenizas deftly balances the grandiose and the personal, juxtaposing events beyond our control with matters that can only be resolved by having the courage to break the silence and reach out.

Havana Club Rum Presents “Amparo” – A Private, One-Night-Only Immersive Theatrical Experience 2/28/18

Havana Club Rum Presents “Amparo” – A Private, One-Night-Only Immersive Theatrical Experience

Miami, Florida 33135

Cost: Free, Private Event and By Invitation Only

On February 28th at Ball & Chain, HAVANA CLUB rum will host the first-ever, private showing of the “Amparo” performance in Miami.

HAVANA CLUB rum recently launched its “Forever Cuban” campaign to uphold the authenticity of the rum’s Cuban heritage and assert its rightful place as the original HAVANA CLUB rum. To further affirm HAVANA CLUB rum as “Forever Cuban,” the brand is tapping into its heritage and retelling the story behind the original creators of the renowned rum with an immersive theatrical experience, aptly titled “Amparo.”

“Amparo” will transform attendees into travelers, complete with Cuban visas and travel guides, and transport them to the truth of the HAVANA CLUB story, beginning in pre-revolution Cuba in 1957 and concluding in modern day Miami. It is a story of industry and innovation, tragedy and betrayal, redemption and reclamation that many Cuban exiles have faced.

Along the journey, travelers will experience pivotal moments in the Arechabala family story that have defined the exiled rum brand. These emotionally charged scenes will unveil, for the first time, not only the injustices that the Cuban regime performed against the Arechabala family, but also the family’s long legacy. A legacy that the government tried to erase, but which history has recorded.

Most importantly, travelers will follow Ramon Arechabala, who managed to take his family’s rum recipe with him, out of Cuba. Ramon shared that recipe, along with the Arechabala family’s legacy, with Bacardi to ensure a future for what his family had made and what had been stolen from them. With “Amparo,” Bacardi is committed to honoring that legacy.

Friday, February 23, from 8-9:15 PM: The Bobby Thomas Jr Quintet: Two-time Grammy Award nominee Robert “Bobby” Thomas Jr. has wowed audiences around the globe for more than three decades. Widely considered one of the most important percussionists in music history, his lightning-fast hands and percussive pyrotechnics prompted the great Joe Zawinul to bestow upon him the title of “Hand Drummer.”

After graduating from high school, Thomas studied at Miami-Dade Community College. During this time, he discovered jazz, and began to play with saxophonist Jet Nero at the Gold Dust lounge and other artists including Ira Sullivan, Billy Marcus, Zoot Sims, Thad Jones, Monty Alexander and Mel Lewis. In the late 70s, Thomas played at a benefit with Jaco Pastorius in Miami Springs. Soon afterward, Thomas auditioned with Joe Zawinul and Wayne Shorter’s jazz fusion group Weather Report at a live performance in New Haven, Connecticut.

Bobby played with Weather Report and its successor bands Weather Update, The Zawinul Syndicate, and Jaco Pastorius’ Word of Mouth Band. He has recorded and toured with the likes of Stan Getz, Ahmad Jamal, Monty Alexander, Sir Roland Hanna, Zoot Sims, Herbie Mann, Eddie Harris, Branford Marsalis, Ahmad Jamal, Junior Mance, Paul Desmond, Johnny James, Monty Alexander, Wes Montgomery, and Roberto Perera. World artists he has played with include sitar player Amitava Chatterjee, and African artist Vinx. Currently a core member of The Zawinul Legacy Band, Thomas has issued several solo CDs, on which he plays an eclectic mix of instruments including conga drums, wind instruments, guitar and the African bow harp. He also leads a new group, The Alien Brothers: 7th World, who are putting together a debut album soon to be released.

With: Abel Pabon (keys), Armando Gola (bass), Jonathan Joseph (drums), Jesse Jones Jr (sax)

Although Ann Pellegrini’s work traverses disciplines, a constant theme is an abiding interest in exploring how feelings are lived, experienced, and communicated, and what potential risks and possibilities result. Another is the value of art and the aesthetic for repairing democratic social life. She is the author of Performance Anxieties: Staging Psychoanalysis, Staging Race (Routledge, 1997); co-author, with Janet R. Jakobsen, of Love the Sin: Sexual Regulation and the Limits of Religious Tolerance (NYU Press, 2003; Beacon Press, 2004); and co-author, with Michael Bronski and Michael Amico, of “You Can Tell Just By Looking” and 20 Other Myths about LGBT Life and People (Beacon Press, 2013). “You Can Tell Just By Looking” was a finalist for the 2014 Lambda Literary Award for Best LGBT Non-Fiction. She has also published two anthologies: Queer Theory and the Jewish Question, co-edited with Daniel Boyarin and Danial Itzkovitz (Columbia University Press, 2003); and Secularisms, co-edited with Janet R. Jakobsen (Duke University Press, 2008). Pellegrini co-edits the Sexual Cultures Series at New York University Press with Joshua Chambers-Letson and Tavia Nyong’o. She is currently completing a new book on “queer structures of religious feeling.” She is a professor in the Department of Performance Studies at New York University.

Saturday, 03/10/2018 – 07:30 pm –
MDC Live Arts Lab
300 NE 2nd Avenue, Building 1,
Miami, Florida 33132

Cost: Free

The Mexico City-based group Teatro Ojo essays the possible dispositions and sequences of gestures, images, and machinations that sketch tensions within the texture of a “spectral contract” on which the figure of the Mexican nation-state is incessantly organized and disorganized—a contract plagued by “public secrets”: what we all know and yet we cannot utter. Bourges states the following about Disorganizing Mimesis: “Five images of a radical theatricality: a flayed/flayer god; a talking cross that incites a silent indigenous uprising that lasted a hundred years; a skeleton of the last Aztec emperor made from the bones of birds, deer, dogs, and a woman’s skull; the corpse of Emperor Montezuma talks to his people through a sinister act of ventriloquism; Subcomandante Marcos is unmasked by the Mexican government in 1995…and he turns out to be the son of a furniture dealer.”
Made up of Héctor Bourges, Karla Rodríguez, Patricio Villarreal, Laura Furlan, Gisela Cortés, and Emanuel Bourges, Teatro Ojo was founded in 2002 in Mexico City, where they still live and work. Their practice has shifted from conventionally theatrical territory to an expanded field that includes artworks, performances, and urban interventions. Collaborating with artists Santiago Sierra, Melanie Smith, Mario Bellatín, Juan José Gurrola, and others, the group questions ideas of memory, the city, violence, community, modernity, education, pre-language, and the post-human. Teatro Ojo’s most important projects include the installation Xipe Tótec, Ponte en Mi Pellejo (Put Yourself in My Shoes), at the 2012 Belluard Bollwerk International Festival, Fribourg, Switzerland, and Lo Que Viene (Forthcoming), a stage project at El Galeón Theater, INBA, Mexico City, also in 2012. Teatro Ojo’s work was also included in group exhibitions in 2014 at the Reina Sofía Museum in Madrid and at the Alhóndiga in Bilbao. In 2011, Teatro Ojo received the gold medal for best Theater Architecture and Performance Space in the Prague Quadrennial of Performance Design and Space.
Teatro Ojo is part of Living Together, a cross-disciplinary series of performance art, film and video screenings, talks, and workshops held in venues across the greater Miami area and reflecting the cultural, social, and political realities of how we live now.
