Thirty years! That’s how long soprano saxophonist-flutist Jane Bunnett has been involved with, immersed in, and dedicated herself to the music of Cuba.
The latest chapter in Jane’s excursion is Maqueque, Jane’s exciting, energetic, all-female, all-Cuban sextet. “Everything I’ve done has led up to this group, which is the perfect vehicle for now,” Jane says with pride. Brought together and led by Jane, all of the five players have grown into a tight ensemble and individually blossomed into confident composers. After winning a 2014 JUNO Award (the Canadian equivalent of a GRAMMY) for their eponymously named first recording, the 2017 sophomore release for Maqueque, “Oddara,” nominated for a 2018 GRAMMY® for Best Latin Jazz Album, expands upon the Afro-Cuban format established on the first effort, and further exhibits the superb collective talent that comprises this acclaimed, energetic group. Slow Food Miami’s “Snail of Approval” Tasting Party will return for a seventh successful year on Friday, March 16. Regarded as Miami’s Freshest Night Out, the annual celebration will be held from 7PM to 10PM at The Palms Hotel & Spa, home to trend-setting farm-to-table concept Essensia Restaurant & Lounge. Join us this Saturday for a very exciting concert of New Music as we celebrate the 50th Anniversary of @FM (Frequency Modulation) with its inventor and music icon, Stanford Professor John Chowning. The concert features new work by University of Miami’s Frost Electroacoustic Music Ensemble with Greg Evans and Alec Druth; and Violist Diana Wade with Mezzo-soprano Jennifer Beattie performing seminal compositions from some of the greats of avant garde music.
John Chowning is the musician and researcher whose discovery led to the first electronic music synthesizers, which have since produced sounds that revolutionized all genres of music. His FM algorithm gives today’s electronic synthesizers and organs the ability to simulate wide ranging musical textures and sounds, including the human voice.
Los Angeles, California based Violist Diana Wade and Mezzo-soprano Jennifer Beattie will perform contemporary works by groundbreaking new music composers Beglarian, Norman, Saariaho, Sciarrino, Schankler, as well as Wade’s original compositions. Diana has been praised for playing with “both athletic and operatic ferocity with a physical force that shook her and a sonic one that practically shook the walls”.
This concert is presented in collaboration with Foundation for Emerging Technologies and Arts as part of their FETA FM FEST celebrating Stanford Professor John Chowning and the 50th anniversary of his groundbreaking invention Frequency Modulation synthesis.

Iraqi- American musician Amir ElSaffar has created techniques to play on the trumpet the microtones and ornaments found in Arabic music but not typically heard on brass. As a composer, he uses this to create an innovative approach to harmony and melody, seen in his commissions for jazz ensembles, Chamber Orchestras, and Middle Eastern Ensembles alike.
In 2018, this annual series returns in collaboration with Miami Dade College’s MDC Live Arts. It invites audiences into a meditative space through instrumental, traditional and innovative sounds from the Middle East. With support from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation’s Knight Arts Challenge and the Doris Duke Foundation, The Rhythm Foundation and MDC Live Arts create an opportunity to build a connection with cultures primarily in the public eye for conflict zones. Westfield Broward is launching their Beauty and Balance program during the entire month of March featuring month long retailer promotions to promote Beauty, Health and Wellness to the local community. A full schedule of events will take place Saturday, March 10th and Sunday, March 11th and are free and open to the public from noon to 4pm.
On Saturday, March 10th the community can enjoy Beauty and Balance themed activities including a braid bar, nail art, make-up seminar, hair demonstrations, healthy food samplings, and tips on how to pose for photos and selfies. The crew at Hand Rolled: A Film About Cigars will be joining Prime Cigar and Whiskey Bar for the evening to promote their new project about the premium cigar world. Join the directors, Jesse Marriut and Steve Gherebean, to watch a trailer of the film, which details how master rollers have perfected their craft, along with helping viewers understand what goes into the cigar experience. HAVANA CLUB rum recently launched its “Forever Cuban” campaign to uphold the authenticity of the rum’s Cuban heritage and assert its rightful place as the original HAVANA CLUB rum. To further affirm HAVANA CLUB rum as “Forever Cuban,” the brand is tapping into its heritage and retelling the story behind the original creators of the renowned rum with an immersive theatrical experience, aptly titled “Amparo.”
“Amparo” will transform attendees into travelers, complete with Cuban visas and travel guides, and transport them to the truth of the HAVANA CLUB story, beginning in pre-revolution Cuba in 1957 and concluding in modern day Miami. It is a story of industry and innovation, tragedy and betrayal, redemption and reclamation that many Cuban exiles have faced.
Along the journey, travelers will experience pivotal moments in the Arechabala family story that have defined the exiled rum brand. These emotionally charged scenes will unveil, for the first time, not only the injustices that the Cuban regime performed against the Arechabala family, but also the family’s long legacy. A legacy that the government tried to erase, but which history has recorded.
Most importantly, travelers will follow Ramon Arechabala, who managed to take his family’s rum recipe with him, out of Cuba. The Fort Lauderdale Gay Men’s Chorus (FTLGMC) will present “Our Time With Sondheim,” an inspiring evening of music from Broadway legend Stephen Sondheim, with special guest performances by Broadway and opera superstars Lisa Vroman and Martha Bartz. The Chorus with its very special guest stars will perform two shows that will pay tribute to the consummate American composer and lyricist known for more than a half-century for his contributions to musical theater.
Performances will be held at All Saints Episcopal Church located at 333 Tarpon Drive in Fort Lauderdale on Friday, March 16 at 8 pm and Sunday, March 18 at 4 pm.
Special guest star Lisa Vroman is a Broadway Leading Lady who holds the record for most performances as Christine Daae’ in Phantom of the Opera. Recognized by the great Cameron Mackintosh as “one of American Musical Theater’s most beautiful voices,” Harold Prince says that “few ladies today possess the exquisite voice, clarity and range of Lisa Vroman.”
Joining Vroman and the Chorus is opera titan Martha Bartz, an in-demand Mezzo Soprano direct from a performance at Lincoln Center in New York. She was the winner of the 2010 Classical Singer convention in NYC (Musical Theater), the 2008 NYC NATS competition and a finalist in the 2009 International Lotte Lehmann Cybersing competition.

Friday, February 23, from 8-9:15 PM: The Bobby Thomas Jr Quintet: Two-time Grammy Award nominee Robert “Bobby” Thomas Jr. has wowed audiences around the globe for more than three decades. Widely considered one of the most important percussionists in music history, his lightning-fast hands and percussive pyrotechnics prompted the great Joe Zawinul to bestow upon him the title of “Hand Drummer.”
After graduating from high school, Thomas studied at Miami-Dade Community College. During this time, he discovered jazz, and began to play with saxophonist Jet Nero at the Gold Dust lounge and other artists including Ira Sullivan, Billy Marcus, Zoot Sims, Thad Jones, Monty Alexander and Mel Lewis. In the late 70s, Thomas played at a benefit with Jaco Pastorius in Miami Springs. Soon afterward, Thomas auditioned with Joe Zawinul and Wayne Shorter’s jazz fusion group Weather Report at a live performance in New Haven, Connecticut.
Bobby played with Weather Report and its successor bands Weather Update, The Zawinul Syndicate, and Jaco Pastorius’ Word of Mouth Band. He has recorded and toured with the likes of Stan Getz, Ahmad Jamal, Monty Alexander, Sir Roland Hanna, Zoot Sims, Herbie Mann, Eddie Harris, Branford Marsalis, Ahmad Jamal, Junior Mance, Paul Desmond, Johnny James, Monty Alexander, Wes Montgomery, and Roberto Perera. World artists he has played with include sitar player Amitava Chatterjee, and African artist Vinx. Currently a core member of The Zawinul Legacy Band, Thomas has issued several solo CDs, on which he plays an eclectic mix of instruments including conga drums, wind instruments, guitar and the African bow harp. He also leads a new group, The Alien Brothers: 7th World, who are putting together a debut album soon to be released.

Share Our Strength’s No Kid Hungry campaign invites South Florida residents to sip and sample the area’s most celebrated culinary creations to help kids in need at this year’s 30th annual Taste of the Nation for No Kid Hungry on April 27, 2018. Hosted at Ice Palace Films Studios, the annual tasting event will feature gourmet cuisine and libations crafted by the city’s top chefs, sommeliers, mixologists and brewers as they unite to raise funds to ensure all children in America have access to the healthy food they need, every day.
One-hundred-percent of proceeds from the event benefit No Kid Hungry’s work to end childhood hunger in America.
The 30th annual tasting event will take place from 7PM to 10PM, followed by an exclusive Chef’s Party for VIP ticket holders at Wynwood’s own R House from 10PM to midnight.
Led by Chef Chairman Timon Balloo, South Florida’s culinary tastemakers will provide guests with scrumptious bite-size fare, craft cocktails and delectable desserts. The benefit will also feature a silent auction with exclusive packages to bid on.
The party will continue just down the street at R House where Chef/Owner Rocco Carulli will team up with additional restaurants to treat guests to tasty bites and pours late into the night. Additional news about the after party will be announced at a later date.

Although Ann Pellegrini’s work traverses disciplines, a constant theme is an abiding interest in exploring how feelings are lived, experienced, and communicated, and what potential risks and possibilities result. Another is the value of art and the aesthetic for repairing democratic social life. She is the author of Performance Anxieties: Staging Psychoanalysis, Staging Race (Routledge, 1997); co-author, with Janet R. Jakobsen, of Love the Sin: Sexual Regulation and the Limits of Religious Tolerance (NYU Press, 2003; Beacon Press, 2004); and co-author, with Michael Bronski and Michael Amico, of “You Can Tell Just By Looking” and 20 Other Myths about LGBT Life and People (Beacon Press, 2013). “You Can Tell Just By Looking” was a finalist for the 2014 Lambda Literary Award for Best LGBT Non-Fiction. She has also published two anthologies: Queer Theory and the Jewish Question, co-edited with Daniel Boyarin and Danial Itzkovitz (Columbia University Press, 2003); and Secularisms, co-edited with Janet R. Jakobsen (Duke University Press, 2008). Pellegrini co-edits the Sexual Cultures Series at New York University Press with Joshua Chambers-Letson and Tavia Nyong’o. She is currently completing a new book on “queer structures of religious feeling.” She is a professor in the Department of Performance Studies at New York University.

The Mexico City-based group Teatro Ojo essays the possible dispositions and sequences of gestures, images, and machinations that sketch tensions within the texture of a “spectral contract” on which the figure of the Mexican nation-state is incessantly organized and disorganized—a contract plagued by “public secrets”: what we all know and yet we cannot utter. Bourges states the following about Disorganizing Mimesis: “Five images of a radical theatricality: a flayed/flayer god; a talking cross that incites a silent indigenous uprising that lasted a hundred years; a skeleton of the last Aztec emperor made from the bones of birds, deer, dogs, and a woman’s skull; the corpse of Emperor Montezuma talks to his people through a sinister act of ventriloquism; Subcomandante Marcos is unmasked by the Mexican government in 1995…and he turns out to be the son of a furniture dealer.”
Made up of Héctor Bourges, Karla Rodríguez, Patricio Villarreal, Laura Furlan, Gisela Cortés, and Emanuel Bourges, Teatro Ojo was founded in 2002 in Mexico City, where they still live and work. Their practice has shifted from conventionally theatrical territory to an expanded field that includes artworks, performances, and urban interventions. Collaborating with artists Santiago Sierra, Melanie Smith, Mario Bellatín, Juan José Gurrola, and others, the group questions ideas of memory, the city, violence, community, modernity, education, pre-language, and the post-human. Teatro Ojo’s most important projects include the installation Xipe Tótec, Ponte en Mi Pellejo (Put Yourself in My Shoes), at the 2012 Belluard Bollwerk International Festival, Fribourg, Switzerland, and Lo Que Viene (Forthcoming), a stage project at El Galeón Theater, INBA, Mexico City, also in 2012. Teatro Ojo’s work was also included in group exhibitions in 2014 at the Reina Sofía Museum in Madrid and at the Alhóndiga in Bilbao. During the past 5 years, we’ve encouraged our attendees to ignite the fire within, to approach things differently, and together we have created unique experiences that have resonated in our community. Vikings and Barbarians Weekend – February 24th and 25th – Only the strongest and most courageous warriors will brave through this weekend. Norwegian brothers and sisters emerge from the mist on an icy wind, battleaxes in hand, donned in leather and fur during this chilling weekend.
The iconic Florida Renaissance Festival will ring in its 26th season, and, for the third year in a row, will offer an extraordinary SEVEN theme-filled weekends as well as a fantastical journey back in time with a variety of fan favorite acts and performances. Upon stepping inside the gates of our village, attendees will be transported back to 16th-century Europe where they will find jesters, jugglers and jousting knights along with music, costumed characters, human powered games, artisan craft shops and enough food & drink for a royal family feast! It’s a full day of fun and entertainment where the entire family can experience the magic of the Renaissance era through an immersive interactive, real audience-participation scenario.
