Nicole Yarling defies description. Her myriad of personal influences have created a product that begs attention across the board. Her chosen instruments are voice, violin and fiddle (in that order). Nicole is a rich velvet voice with technical skill and personality to boot! She is a rising star in the jazz community who, like many others, has been at it for years.
According to the Miami Sun Sentinel, “Every musical hat fits Nicole Yarling. For more than a decade, she has been a part of South Florida’s musical world as a singer and violinist, working in jazz, rock, R and B, experimental music and a few other styles that defy description.”
Nicole’s musical excursions have brought about stints with Dizzy Gillespie, and three years on tour as a featured soloist with Jimmy Buffet. She also participated on Buffet’s platinum-selling CD, Fruit Cakes, and then went on to do eight worldwide tours with her own project, Little Nicky and the Slicks.

Join New World Symphony Artistic Director and composer Michael Tilson Thomas (MTT) as he leads an evening exclusively dedicated to new artistic creations. This event celebrating Miami and creativity in the arts is the cornerstone of NWS’s commitment to multi-genre innovation. The program includes the world premieres of a newly-revised Miami in Movements, two musical compositions and a short literary work by MTT himself and a micro-play by New York playwright Christopher Wall.
What does Miami sound and look like? The program includes the world premiere of the newly-revised Miami in Movements, a vibrant multisensory reflection on, and a love song to, contemporary Miami created by composer Ted Hearne and filmmaker Jonathan David Kane. Miami in Movements is the culminating work resulting from Project 305, which invited residents to share their stories and experiences of life in Miami in sound and video.
Glimpse of the Big Picture features three world premieres by MTT that include a short work for solo piano, a reading inspired by his recollection of a dream and a work for large ensemble, which MTT will himself conduct.
The Inherent Sadness of Low-Lying Areas explores how past experiences such as trauma can impact interpersonal relationships. The play weaves selected Fellows into the performance both musically and theatrically. This play will come to life through actors Joel Leffert and June Ballinger and through five Fellows, who will perform excerpts of musical works spanning three centuries.

What exactly is a cocktail class? Learn how to make your own cocktails form our highly trained mixologists! Plus, you get to drink them and have a good time!
Is every class the same? No, classes and cocktails vary depending on the season and the mixologist. Select herbs, mixes, tinctures, and liquors may not be available and are subject to change at the discretion of the venue and the mixologist.
What should I wear? Come ready to have a good time! No shorts, sandals, or beach attire is permitted in the lounge.
Can I bring my own alcohol? Nope, we don’t allow outside alcohol (it’s also illegal with our liquor license). If there is something specific you like please give us a call! You must be 21+ to consume alcohol. A valid ID or passport is required to attend the class.
Can I bring food? We don’t allow outside food. However, for parties of 10 and above we can provide light bites and food but you’ll need to book this a minimum of 4 week days in advance. Call us if you have questions.
Do you have private classes? Do you do classes off-site? Yes, we do! We offer private classes for a variety of events (birthdays, corporate groups, etc.) and we are more than happy to accommodate any size, location and preference! Are we in the cold? No! Drinkhouse Fire & Ice has an ice bar…meaning one room is made of 100,000 pounds of ice (the walls, bar, chairs, glasses are all ice). However, cocktail classes takes place in the lounge/bar area that is normal temperature. You are more than welcome to purchase our “Cocktail Class + Ice” ticket if you’d like to do the class and than go into the Ice bar after!
Do we need to bring our own coats if we want to visit the Ice bar? We have fur coats, hats, Ugg boots, socks, and gloves so you can come dressed however you’d like and we will take care of you!

As Billie Holiday sings: The same ole story, but it’s new to me… Acclaimed artist Carrie Mae Weems, deemed “one of the more interesting artists working in the gap between art and politics” by The New York Times, presents a new performance-based work, Past Tense. Through music, text, projection, and video, this new performance-lecture takes us on a deep dive into the enduring significance of the iconic Antigone and her profound relevance to our contemporary moment. Past Tense’s origins lie in Weems’ powerful work Grace Notes. Weems says, “While working on Grace Notes for months it occurred to me that I was telling the story of Antigone, wherein an innocent man dies by unjustified means and his sister fights for the right to bury him honorably. But the wider community refuses her; her right to justice, and to peace, is denied.” Through photography, video, installation, and performance works, Carrie Mae Weems has created a complex body of art that investigates family relationships, gender roles, racism, classism, and politics. Although Weems’ work addresses a wide array of issues, her overarching commitment is to help us better understand our present by examining our collective past. Weems, the recipient of numerous awards, grants, and fellowships, including the prestigious MacArthur “genius” grant, the W.E.B DuBois Medal, and Anderson Ranch’s National Artist Award, is represented in public and private collections around the world including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. Miami’s Vice City Rollers are proud to continue the Fresh Meat Class: Roller Derby 101. This 8 week course is intended to teach the skills required to be a successful derby skater. Skaters will be tested to evaluate those skills learned during the course. After completing RD101, skater will move on to RD102, another 6-week course. Upon passing both courses the skater will become a member of the league and will receive an MVCR shirt with their name on it.
Dates: Orientation will be on Sunday, Feb. 11, 2018 from 6-9 p.m.
Enrollment Cost and Practice Dates/Times: Enrollment in the Fresh Meat Class: RD101 costs $75 for the 8-week course. Each registered skater will be able to attend practices twice a week (Sundays and Mondays from 7-9 pm) during RD101.

On Saturday, Jan. 27, Istituto Marangoni Miami-the first U.S. campus of Italy’s leading fashion, art and design school-will bring together industry leaders, alumni and celebrities for a VIP ribbon cutting and grand opening party in Miami’s Design District. The exclusive evening, hosted by campus President Hakan Baykam, will infuse new energy into the city’s fashion scene and will be the first step to legitimizing Miami as a serious fashion capital of the world. The event features tours of the finished building, a fashion show showcasing alumni designs as well as a high-energy after party performance from DJ Mia Moretti and Margot of the Dolls. The group is known for creating soundtracks for fashion’s most recognizable brands, such as Moschino and Alice & Olivia; opening for major acts like Katy Perry, Diana Ross and Stevie Wonder; and for performing at the Met Ball after party, the Louvre and the Guggenheim. The Dolls will be joined on stage by a troupe of voguers, who will amp up excitement for the first class of Istituto Marangoni students in Miami.
The evening will begin with a ceremonial ribbon cutting and cocktail hour at the new campus, where guests will toast to the brand’s expansion. Roberto Riccio, CEO of Marangoni Group, and Hakan Baykam will give their opening remarks and welcome the audience to a first look of the seven-story building. Guests can then go on self-guided tours throughout the space and view the unique mannequins outfitted by Istituto Marangoni alumni, Piazzalunga.
After the cocktail party, attendees will be escorted to the iconic Moore Building, known for its distinct Zaha Hadid installation. The space will be transformed into a futuristic garden featuring flower fantasies and modern motifs. Envisioned by StudioKhom, the concept is inspired by classic Italian gardens and is designed to be the epitome of elegance and style. Guests will be seated to enjoy the fashion show, which will showcase collections from recent alumni Ece Sahin, Claudio Potenti, Lu Xia, Irina Demyanchuk and Armando Costa. With bold colors and avant-garde flair, the show will be representative of the diverse skills and techniques taught by Istituto Marangoni professors. Saturday February 3, 8 PM: Arts Garage presents the Kiki Sanchez Latin Jazz Ensemble. Among the new generation of young Afro-Peruvian Jazz musicians that are emerging on the national Jazz scene is pianist Kiki Sanchez. Born in Lima Peru, Sanchez began playing piano at age 11. Later he moved to Miami, Florida, where he continued studying piano as well as cultivating a deep love for American Jazz.
Sanchez’s musical interpretation is resounding, leaving the listener with admiration and much anticipation for greater things to come from a musician of such high caliber.
Sanchez has also produced an instructional DVD called “The Real Latin Piano and the introduction to Afro-Peruvian Rhythms”; in it you’ll find essential musical knowledge that accentuates the building blocks of Latin music, as well as offering a fresh introspective view on various Afro-Peruvian rhythms as applied to Jazz.

Blackwell, working outside the architectural mainstream, will discuss his architecture and design process as being based in design strategies that draw upon vernaculars and building typologies and the contradictions of place; strategies that seek to transgress conventional boundaries for architecture. Blackwell will demonstrate how ideas and actions are generated from careful observations of intersections of nature-made and culture-made conditions particular to an architectural situation. Using examples of selected design works from his firm, Marlon Blackwell Architects, he will demonstrate that a resident architecture can be achieved as interplay between details, form, and place. In particular, he will illustrate the necessity of being responsive to environmental factors, the specificities of site, and sustainable design principles that ultimately provides an architecture that can be felt as much as it is understood, as immediate and tactical as it is legible, contributing to the fundamental civic dignity of communities.

Best known for his unique rendition of the National Anthem while simultaneously painting the iconic scene of the “Raising of the Flag on Iwo Jima,” Everson is a favorite at professional sporting events across the country. Heather Moraitis, City Commissioner-elect for Fort Lauderdale District 1, will be the first recipient honored during the inaugural event taking place at Truluck’s restaurant at The Galleria at Fort Lauderdale. Fort Lauderdale’s Heather Moraitis has a long history of caring for children and families. After graduating from the University of Florida with a master’s degree in education, Moraitis worked abroad for the US Navy in Italy overseeing two child development centers. After returning to Fort Lauderdale, she parlayed her love of family into her role as education consultant for Jack and Jill Children’s Center helping relocate the center from Sailboat Bend to its current location on Broward Boulevard. Moraitis taught elementary school at Westminster Academy before serving as the school’s director of development. As president of the Junior League of Greater Fort Lauderdale, Moraitis helped launch the Fort Lauderdale Independence Training & Education (FLITE) Center for youth aging out of foster care. During her time in the Junior League, she also helped author a nutrition program for 2nd grade students which was implemented in Broward County Public Schools. Moraitis is a recipient of the Governor’s Points of Light Award and the Florida Department of Education Commissioner’s Business Recognition Award for her service to the community. Heather participated in Leadership Broward, Lifeworks Leadership, Women in Leadership and Greater Fort Lauderdale Chamber of Commerce Leadership. She is a member of the Greater Fort Lauderdale Chamber of Commerce, Navy League Fort Lauderdale Council and a prior member of the City of Fort Lauderdale Marine Advisory Board. Since 2008, Moraitis has volunteered for the YMCA of South Florida and she currently serves on the board of the Coral Ridge Isles Homeowner’s Association. She is married to Representative George Moraitis and they have two teenage daughters.

The 62-minute documentary film, directed by Francesca Molteni and co-written by Molteni and Cristina Didero, released in 2017, focuses on nineteen protagonists who defined this revolutionary Italian design movement.

The Transformations Suite paints a musical picture of the current state of social inequality and injustice in the United States and beyond. Samora Pinderhughes has spent the past five years writing, recording, and producing this work, which combines music, theater, and poetry to examine the radical history of resistance within communities of the African diaspora. Within the composition’s framework, the project connects contemporary issues, such as the prison-industrial complex and the Black Lives Matter movement, with the history of revolutionary movements of color. Centered in the belief that there is a soundtrack to every revolution, The Transformations Suite intends to foster dialogue on social-justice issues throughout the world, show how art can promote social change, contribute to the powerful growing movement on behalf of black lives around the country, and empower all people –especially youth– to make their voices heard. Samora Abayomi Pinderhughes is a world-renowned pianist and composer who has performed at the White House, the Blue Note, MoMA, the Sundance Film Festival, Monterey Jazz Festival, and Carnegie Hall, and has toured internationally with Branford Marsalis, Christian Scott, Jose James, Harvey Mason, Emily King, and other artists. Pinderhughes is also a member of Blackout for Human Rights, and was musical director for their 2016 #MLKNow and #JusticeForFlint events. The iconic Florida Renaissance Festival will ring in its 26th season, and, for the third year in a row, will offer an extraordinary SEVEN theme-filled weekends as well as a fantastical journey back in time with a variety of fan favorite acts and performances. Upon stepping inside the gates of our village, attendees will be transported back to 16th-century Europe where they will find jesters, jugglers and jousting knights along with music, costumed characters, human powered games, artisan craft shops and enough food & drink for a royal family feast! It’s a full day of fun and entertainment where the entire family can experience the magic of the Renaissance era through an immersive interactive, real audience-participation scenario.
The Florida Renaissance Festival has grown into one of the nation’s most beloved events dedicated to recreating the historical era of the Renaissance, each year adding more entertainment and themed weekends while welcoming a crowd that has swelled over the years to nearly 100,000 annual attendees, and with more than two million people having participated over the course of the Festival’s 26 years.
“Being able to provide this alternate universe where attendees can immerse themselves in the rich history that is the Renaissance is something my team and I take great pride in,” said Bobby Rodriguez, Founder and Producer of the Florida Renaissance Festival. “We are proud to have the continuous support of the county, the city and our community which enables us to grow this event each year, resulting in a culturally enriching festival for people of all ages.”

Only the strongest and most courageous warriors will brave through this weekend. Norwegian brothers and sisters emerge from the mist on an icy wind, battleaxes in hand, donned in leather and fur during this chilling weekend.
* Bodacious Bodices & Wenches – March 3rd and 4th
Behind every good man is a wench in the trench. Wenches Weekend celebrates the women of the Renaissance with hourglass curves and firey attitudes who can go toe-to-toe with their male counterparts.

Yet another newly themed weekend! International Weekend celebrates all the exotic cultures that influenced the Renaissance in Europe through exploration and trade. Fabião is a professor at the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro in the Theater Directing Undergraduate Program and the Arts of the Scene Graduate Program, where she chairs the artistic experimentation wing. Fabião is interested in the poetics and ethics of the strange, of the encounter, of precariousness. She considers the street actions as forms of knowledge and thought, and understands concepts and theories as sources of energy to keep investigating and inventing city, art, university, and writing. Calling all muggles, witches and wizards-in- training! You are hereby summoned to attend the Fort Lauderdale Historical Society’s “Harry Potter Book Night: Fantastic Beasts” on Thursday, February 1, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.! Join thousands of Harry Potter fans from all around the world in this fourth annual celebration of the global paperback edition release of the new Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them by J.K. Rowling (Bloomsbury Children’s Books).
The fun begins at the 1905 New River Inn housing the History Museum of Fort Lauderdale (231 SW Second Avenue) where guests will sign-in and gather to visit the Sorting Hat and discover to which Hogwarts house they owe allegiance – Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw or Slytherin.
Visitors will enjoy scrumptious themed refreshments and snacks including a butterbeer mixology introduction and then take part in a scavenger hunt for fantastic beasts guaranteed to make every visitor a certified Magizoologist.
Small groups will embark on an exclusive tour of the enchantingly bedecked historical attraction featuring the Potter-esque 1907 King Cromartie House Museum with its fully furnished turn-of-the-century charm, period children’s toys and even the “room under the stairs.” In the 1899 Replica Ivy Cromartie Schoolhouse, children will reside at period wooden desks while they view an entrancing demonstration of Severus Snape’s potion creation class. A Quidditch match will also take place on the lawn.

In a program designated Triptych Miami, Eleonora Fabião will present three interrelated components. The action I Will Have a Conversation About Any Subject/Converso Sobre Cualquier Asunto finds the artist at various public locations over the course of three days, barefoot, sitting and facing an empty chair, and displaying a sign bearing the invitation of the work’s title. The artist will also present a lecture performance about her practice; a workshop with young artists titled Performance Art, Artistic Strategies, and Political Imagination (New World School of the Arts); and Light Cloud, an action that will be performed along with the workshop participants in downtown Miami. The unpredictable encounters that result from these open-ended situations constitute the works. Born in Brazil in1968, Eleonora Fabião is an artist and theorist who has performed actions in the streets since 2008. In 2011, she received the Arts in the Streets Award from the Brazilian National Foundation of the Arts and in 2014 the Rumos Itaú Cultural Grant that resulted in the publication of the book AÇÕES/ ACTIONS. Fabião is a professor at the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro in the Theater Directing Undergraduate Program and the Arts of the Scene Graduate Program, where she chairs the artistic experimentation wing. Fabião is interested in the poetics and ethics of the strange, of the encounter, of precariousness. She considers the street actions as forms of knowledge and thought, and understands concepts and theories as sources of energy to keep investigating and inventing city, art, university, and writing. Her performance work has taken place in several venues including as part of Performa15 in New York in 2015, and at the Centro Municipal de Arte Hélio Oiticica and the Museu Bispo do Rosário, both in Rio de Janeiro in 2016.

The Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA), North Miami is thrilled to welcome saxophonist and composer Troy Roberts as part of the monthly Jazz at MOCA series. Roberts travels around the globe performing and recording with some of the greatest jazz artists of all time including James Morrison, Aretha Franklin, Christian McBride, Sammy Figueroa, Dave Douglas, Orrin Evans and Kurt Elling.
A jazz giant, Roberts has received numerous awards including three consecutive DownBeat Jazz Soloist Awards. He received a Grammy nomination in 2011, and was the only Australian semi-finalist in the 2008 Thelonious Monk International Jazz Saxophone Competition. Roberts is a member of both the Jeff “Tain” Watts Quartet and Jeff “Tain’ Watts” “Blue 5” as well as the newest member of Joey DeFrancesco’s quartet “The People.” He is also currently celebrating his seventh solo record “Tales & Tones.” The public is invited to enjoy the rhythms of Troy Roberts.

“The MCCJ has a long history of uniting our community, fostering inclusiveness, and celebrating diversity. This year’s Silver Medallion honorees have helped spread this message of unity as they have each left their mark on Miami’s history,” said Tony Argiz, award’s dinner co-chair. “Conchy and I are honored to serve as the chairs of the MCCJ Humanitarian Dinner, and be able to recognize these deserving individuals. This year’s recipients include Betty T. Ferguson, former Miami-Dade County Commissioner; Rose Ellen Greene, philanthropist; Mitchell Kaplan, co-founder of Miami Book Fair International; and Myron J. “Mike” Brodie, former executive director of the Greater Miami Jewish Federation, who will receive his award posthumously. The Clergy Medallion is being given to Rabbi Judith Siegal, senior rabbi of Temple Judea.
Since the establishment of the Humanitarian Awards in 1946, MCCJ has united the community in celebration of Miami’s diversity and in appreciation of those who have helped to build a more welcoming, inclusive, just and cooperative society. MCCJ board chair, Sherry Tropin said that the idea behind this year’s dinner was to use the image of a puzzle to express the fact that there are many pieces that make up Miami. “We each have a place here, but together, we make Miami whole. Kim Cameron is a true believer in inspiring and nurturing kids. She is a vocal instructor/mentor with Guitars Over Guns and often takes her students to perform with her at local community events. While on tour in the Caribbean, she met a 12-year-old girl who had a fascination with octopi. This brief encounter inspired the creation of Mr. Octopus, a children’s tune featuring an 8-year-old whom Kim had signed to her record label. After completing the song, her co-writer and guitarist, John DePatie, encouraged her to take it to next level by writing a children’s book using the song as the basis of the story. They called the book Seaper Powers: In Search of Bleu Jay’s Treasure. Kim Cameron is also a 2-time Billboard Top 20 dance recording artist.

On Thursday January 4th, 2018, the White House announced its plans to open nearly all U.S. federal waters to offshore drilling activities. In a new draft five-year program for oil and gas development, the Department of the Interior (DOI) outlined its plans to expand future oil and gas leasing to the Atlantic, Pacific and Arctic oceans, as well as the eastern Gulf of Mexico.
This plan includes the possibility of drilling for oil DIRECTLY off Miami’s beaches in the straits of Florida. This is the largest number of potential offshore lease sales ever proposed.

On January 25th at the City of Miami Commission Meeting, City Commissioner Ken Russell of District 2 will be introducing a Resolution opposing Offshore Drilling and Seismic Airgun Blasting.

We’ll also learn about our local public lands, including Biscayne National Park, which celebrates its 50th anniversary this year.

In honor of Black History Month, Art Gallery 21 and the City of Wilton Manors are proud to present “The Quilts of Gee’s Bend: The Fabric of Their Lives” from Saturday, February 3 – Saturday, March 10. This distinctive exhibit will feature seven original quilts from the collection of Janet Dolland, advocate of the celebrated Gee’s Bend Quilter’s Collective.
Formed in the isolated African American hamlet of Gee’s Bend, Alabama, in the early 20th century, this collective of women ranges in ages from 19 to 90 and has been recognized by such organizations as the U.S. Postal Service, the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, N.Y., and the National Museum in Washington, D.C. These quilts symbolize the individuality of the quilters’ multigenerational approach to African American art and culture.
In addition to the exhibit, Dolland will be giving lectures on quilting Saturday, February 3 at Art Gallery 21 and Thursday, February 8 at Old Dillard High School (1001 NW 4th Street, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33311) from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m.
This project is sponsored by in part by the Broward County Board of County Commissioners as recommended by the Broward Cultural Council through the Cultural Investment Program.

Elsten Torres is a singer/songwriter/producer who came to New York from Havana as a child. He was lead singer and songwriter for the American Latin Rock band, “Fulano de Tal.” After the breakup of the band, Elsten has continued both his own career as a solo artist and has had success writing for other well-known performers such as Ricky Martin, Luis Fonsi, Obie Bermúdez, Alejandra Guzmán, Julio Iglesias, Aleks Syntek, Oscar de Leon, Marshall Crenshaw, John Rich, and many others. He has been nominated for two Grammy Awards, the second for his first solo independent album, “Individual.” He has won several BMI music awards for his songwriting and is on the board of governors for NARAS. Currently living in Miami, Elsten works with charity organizations such as “Hope” (Miami Beach Homeless) and Susan G. Komen for the Cure. He has recently released his second all English album, “Waiting for Clouds”.

Miami’s premier Design and Architecture Senior High marks the 10th anniversary of its annual Taste of Design in a new location with the return of an all-star line-up of local chefs.
This year’s festivities will be held in Paradise Plaza, the Design District’s new cutting edge take on art, food and fashion on Friday, January 26, 2018 from 7PM to 10PM. An extension of the popular pedestrian Paseo Ponti, the sculpture-filled plaza includes architecture by Daly Genik, Freehand Buck and MOS. In keeping with past events, the 2018 Taste menu will feature some of Miami’s hottest chefs, including James Beard finalist Brad Kilgore. A special item will also be offered during the annual silent auction: a rare, signed guitar by rock legend Tom Petty.
To celebrate ten years, the event will highlight the achievements of DASH’s remarkable alums as well as future grads.
Ranked by U.S. News & World Report among the top high schools in Florida and the U.S. for the last decade, DASH offers a design-driven curriculum taught by industry professionals. Its location in the heart of the Design District provides students with a unique opportunity to see design in action. The annual Taste of Design serves as an important fundraiser to support critical programs, including Portfolio Day. Donations have also helped send dozens of students to important college prep programs around the country, including Parsons and the School for Visual Arts in New York.
Moving to Paradise Plaza puts this year’s Taste at the center of the district’s new cultural hub, providing an opportunity for an art-filled evening. Along the paseo connected to the plaza are sculptures and installations by John Baldessari, The Buckminster Fuller Institute, Konstantin Grcic, Zaha Hadid and Marc Newson. The Institute for Contemporary Art and de la Cruz art collection sit just around the corner.
The 2018 Taste menu features food from two of Kilgore’s new restaurants, Ember and Kaido. Kilgore has twice been nominated as James Beard Rising Star Chef and earned a best new
restaurant nod. Acclaimed chef Dewey LoSasso, who helped turn Miami into a food destination, will also provide dishes. LoSasso, who served as Donatella Versace’s personal chef, has helmed the kitchens at some of Miami’s leading restaurants including The Forge Restaurant/Wine Bar, Schnebly Winery and Miami Brewing Company, LaTour, and The Private Foundlings Club.
Along with the signed guitar, this year’s silent auction will include original artwork, jewelry, dining, spa treatments, home and garden items, skin care goodies, and tickets to major entertainment events.

Israeli-born and Australian-reared Tal Cohen’s unique piano style owes its roots to the Jewish folk songs and classical music he played in his formative years growing up in Israel.
Tal was chosen as one of 10 semi-finalists in the Wangaratta Jazz Festival’s 2013 piano competition, Australia’s most renowned and fierce jazz competition.
Grammy-winning saxophonist Terence Blanchard invited him to perform with his Quintet at the 2014 New Orleans Jazz Festival. Later that year, Cohen appeared at the 2014 Perth Jazz Festival alongside acclaimed New York saxophonist Greg Osby.
Cohen was named the Grand Prize Winner of the Barry Harris National Jazz Piano Competition, gaining an opportunity to perform his music at the Main Stage in the 2014 Detroit Jazz Festival accompanied by bassist Robert Hurst and drummer Nate Winn.
After a final performance at the Sydney Opera House, Cohen was named the winner of the exclusive Australian Freedman Fellowship Award.
Now based in the US, he has become a regular performer with iconic jazz figures such as Terence Blanchard, Greg Osby and Robert Hurst and continues to tour the world performing his unique brand of improvised music.

PLEASE NOTE:
There are two shows Friday and Saturday. Guests in first dinner seating have the table for only the first show. Who put the gold in the Golden Age? Bride of the White Widow, a multi-media event by performance art collective My Barbarian (Malik Gaines, Jade Gordon, and Alexandro Segade), playfully –and critically–wrestles with this question in a surreal, post-colonial tale about the doomed crew of the White Widow, seventeenth century Dutch sailors lost in the so-called New World. A show within a show, Bride of the White Widow is an interactive play, exploring contemporary issues of cultural appropriation, globalism, and environmental collapse through song, dance, and games with the audience. A restaging of My Barbarian’s Voyage of the White Widow, originally commissioned by De Appel, Amsterdam, in 2006, and included in Performa 02 at the Whitney Museum, New York, the performance at the Light Box in Miami explores My Barbarian’s sixteen-year journey as a performance collective. Working at the intersection of visual art, theater, and critical practice, My Barbarian uses performance to theatricalize social problems and imagine ways of being together. Founded in Los Angeles in 2000, the group’s work moves through different modes that prepare for, present, and represent live performance: music composition, plays, and other texts; costumes, masks, puppets and sets; video; and drawings and prints. The group has performed and exhibited widely while maintaining a focus on the provocation of theatricality in the visual-art context. My Barbarian has been included in the Whitney Biennial, two Performa Biennials, two California Biennials, the Montreal Biennial, and the Baltic Triennial.

On Saturday January 20th, W Miami – in partnership with DayBreaker MIA – will host Saturday Morning Disco Fever, the first ever Saturday morning DayBreaker party on the property’s stunning 50th floor rooftop WET Deck.
Starting at 10 a.m., guests will begin their morning with a yoga class, taking in all the breathtaking views of Biscayne Bay. At 11 a.m. disco fever begins! Guests are encouraged to don their favor 70’s attire (think: afro wigs and platform shoes) and get funky with a dance party with beats by Dude Skywalker.
Free breakfast bites will be provided by Mantiboa Harvest and GT’s Kombucha, in addition to complimentary coffee and healthy juices.
