The art fair is housed between the Pan-African Pavilion at 919 Plaza at The Lyric and the Featured Artists Pavilion at 920 historic Clyde Killens’ building both on NW 2nd Avenue in Overtown. On December 7, nationally-acclaimed environmental artist, Xavier Cortada, will celebrate the 10-year anniversary of his Longitudinal Installation by unveiling a replica of the ceramic sculpture, which will be on permanent display at Pinecrest Gardens. Florida’s Secretary of State Ken Detzner will be present for a dedication ceremony in addition to Palmer Trinity students. The participatory art piece captures voices from 24 individuals across the globe who have been impacted by climate change.

Cortada first created the Longitudinal Installation in the South Pole in 2007 and in the North Pole in 2008. During both visits, Cortada placed 24 shoes in a circle, each aligned across 24 longitudes. He stopped in front of each of his longitudinal shoe markers and read a quote aloud that revealed a person’s experience with climate change from that part of the world. His artistic ritual illustrated the ways in which individuals all over the world have been profoundly impacted by climate change. Guests are invited to recite the 24 quotes, as Cortada did at both ends of the world. This event is free and open to the public. The dedication of “Longitudinal Installation” will take place at Pinecrest Gardens, 11000 SW Red Road, on December 7 from 6:30 – 9:00 p.m. For more information, visit www.cortada.com. 305-669-6990

The Dean Collection and BACARDÍ present No Commission: Miami 2017, a three-day, art and music experience taking place December 7 – 9, 2017, at Soho Studios in Wynwood. No Commission is a roving experiential platform organized by The Dean Collection and BACARDÍ to forge a direct link between art and art patronage. No Commission is designed specifically to support artists in different territories around the world.

No Commission Miami 2017 casts a thematic light on “Island Might”, which suggests the power and possibility, tradition and future of a place and its people. The “ways of an island”— its functioning components and life essentials are guiding principles. We examine family, land & sea, ritual, revolution and color as elemental forces that can illuminate the roadmap for a more generous, stable fate.

The injection of immersive music performances from collaborator BACARDÍ shakes up the traditional art fair, creating a unique culture experience for visitors. Past performers have included Alicia Keys, Major Lazer, A$AP Rocky, Cardi B, DMX, Pusha T and more. There are also some fantastic artist profiles of individuals who have gone on to find tremendous success following their No Commission exhibitions.

No Commission Miami is the sixth in a series of artist support collaborations. Past editions were held in Miami, New York, London, Shanghai and Berlin where artworks were sold and artists retained 100% of sales proceeds. The No Commission platform is realized through a partnership between BACARDÍ, Swizz Beatz, and The Dean Collection in their continued support of cultural visionaries around the world.

No Commission: Miami is open via invitation only on Thursday, December 7. On Friday, December 8 and Saturday, December 9 No Commission: Miami will be open to the public from 12pm to 5pm, and from 7pm to 12am with valid registration.

The Wynwood Yard
56 NW 29th St,
Miami, Florida 33127

Join us Wednesdays for live jazz under the stars featuring Miami local music luminaries living in our midst. These shows are each Wednesday from 8 pm – 11 pm for free at The Yard and are curated by Chad Bernstein of Guitars Over Guns.

On Wednesday, November 29th, pianist Tal Cohen pays us a very special visit at The Yard. Cohen’s unique piano style owes its roots to the Jewish folk songs and classical music he played in his formative years growing up in Israel. He later moved to Australia, where he received a music scholarship from Churchlands Senior High School. He continued his music studies at the prestigious Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts, where he completed a bachelor’s degree and masters in jazz performance. He began performing nationally, including Sydney’s 505 and Melbourne’s Bennett’s Lane and Uptown jazz clubs. In the same year, he also performed with New York saxophonist, George Garzone. In 2011, Tal performed at the Melbourne Jazz Festival in the “Jamie Oehlers Quartet”. That same year, Cohen released his first album as a leader “Yellow Sticker”. He’s currently studying at the University of Miami, where he’s had the opportunity to play with drummer Jeff “Tain” Watts, and West Coast-based trumpeter John Daversa. We can proudly call him a local.

In July 2011, Tal performed at the Melbourne Jazz Festival in the “Jamie Oehlers Quartet” which featured Australia’s Jamie Oehlers on saxophone as well as highly acclaimed New York drummer Ari Hoenig, and Sam Anning on bass. The group then went on to record the album “Smoke and Mirrors” after which the group toured around Australia in August 2012. Tal has also had the honor of playing with iconic modern jazz bassist, Bob Hurst in Melbourne and Perth shows in June 2012, alongside Jamie Oehlers and drummer, Jacob Evans.

Tables are pulled up near the stage for that jazzy club feel under the stars. Savor drinks from The Bar at The Yard and Charcoal Garden Bar + Grill and bites from our resident food concepts. Admission is free. #jazzattheyard

In his Epoch exhibit, nationally-acclaimed environmental artist and Pinecrest Gardens’ first artist-in-residence, Xavier Cortada portrays life that has existed on our planet over the past 500 million years and invites the audience to ponder what life forms will inhabit the earth in the future. Conversations and thoughts on time, growth, and extinction will be brought to light as a result of Cortada’s unique interpretation of the individual’s adaptations or lack-thereof. As we move through the current epoch, the Anthropocene, humans themselves are changing the global climate and Earth’s ecosystems. Our reckless emission of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, along with our extensive use of pesticides, our endless yearning for fertile land, and our unyielding population growth are greatly accelerating the rate of extinction of our fellow species. This exhibit is free and open to the public. Exhibit runs November 30, 2017 through January 14, 2018 from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday-Friday in the historic Hibiscus Gallery at Pinecrest Gardens, 11000 SW Red Road, Pinecrest, FL 33156. Fantich & Young: Apex Predator | Darwinian Voodoo 12/6/17, 12/7/17, 12/8/17, 12/9/17, 12/10/17

Fantich & Young: Apex Predator | Darwinian Voodoo
Wednesday, 12/06/2017 – 12/10/2017 12:00 pm – 07:00 pm
Wynwood
221 NW 23rd Street,
Miami, Florida 33127

Cost: Free

Taking the “killer shoe” to the next level, Fantich & Young merge fine art, fashion and design to present luxury consumer goods augmented with ritualistic items to represent Darwin’s notion of “survival of the fittest” and call into question controversial social issues dealing with the free market economy.

Barrett Barrera Projects, a St. Louis-based multidisciplinary consulting company specializing in arts, culture and contemporary fashion, is returning to Miami Art Week to present FANTICH & YOUNG: APEX PREDATOR | DARWINIAN VOODOO as one of the art installations the company will unveil in Wynwood during Art Basel from December 7 to 10, 2017.

Simulating a luxury lifestyle boutique, APEX PREDATOR | DARWINIAN VOODOO is a conceptual pop-up exhibition employing multimedia sculpture, photographic prints and a promotional advertising campaign to present a primeval yet contemporary collection that merges the creative disciplines of fine art, design and fashion.

Mariana Fantich, born and raised in the Ukraine, is an artist and digital media specialist and Dominic Young is an English musician and artist. Since 2008 they have collaborated under the name Fantich & Young and are currently based in London’s East End. The duo juxtaposes and manipulates symbolic ready-made objects – including Saville Row suits and Jimmy Choo shoes – in order to parallel both natural and social evolution, calling into question the theory of natural selection with nods to ceremonial ritual and the supernatural – a concept they term Darwinian Voodoo. Their Apex Predator project, an outgrowth of Darwinian Voodoo, was inspired by the 2008 financial crisis. Luxury consumer goods augmented with ritualistic items such as teeth, bones, and hair represent the banking community and its escape from criminal prosecution. The financiers thus become the titular Apex Predator – topping the food chain, facing no real threat and possessing perhaps a touch of the supernatural.

Designed for ‘‘the discerning client with the taste for power and exclusivity,” the Apex Predator collection includes shoes, masks, two-piece ensembles, perfume and other meticulously embellished accessories. All items in this luxury retail exhibition will be sold as limited-edition art sculpture (not meant to be worn as fashion items) with prices ranging from $2,000 for the “killer shoes” – a pair of black stilettos featuring soles made of teeth – to $45,000 for “Female and Male Superhumans.”

If the free-market economy is indeed a forum where only the strongest survive, and our urban habitats are a brutal jungle, Fantich & Young’s Darwinian Voodoo seems to perfectly address the needs of an exclusive clientele who reside at the very top of our society’s food chain.

Our mission at Favela Miami is to assist the Homeless to transition out of homelessness by covering their basic needs and giving them a reason to look forward to achieving the ultimate goal: permanent housing. When a person becomes homeless, it only takes 3 weeks of living on the streets to lose their sense of rational thinking and self-respect. Once someone is labeled “homeless” they become invisible to society. Our intention is for the community to see, respect and assist the Homeless, helping build confidence and lift their spirits to encourage them to seek help in finding shelter, jobs, education, and mental health. Society is measured by how it treats the weak and vulnerable. We must give the Homeless access to opportunities. We must give the Homeless the right to choose the kind of services they receive. We succeed when we think and act collectively. No one rests until everyone has a home! We need your support and donations to make this happen.

Renowned Artist Jack Amoroso Presents A Lifetime Of Artistry 11/16/17

Renowned Artist Jack Amoroso Presents A Lifetime Of Artistry
Thursday November 16, 2017, 6:30PM-9:00PM
Grove Gallery & Interiors
2884 Bird Ave
Coconut Grove, FL
Kindly RSVP to: gpineres@creativasgroup.com

Art lovers are welcomed to attend a very special opening reception: “A Lifetime of Artistry” next Thursday November 16, 2017 from 6:30PM-9:00PM featuring works by the highly recognized and acclaimed Jack Amoroso. The event will take place at Grove Gallery & Interiors located at 2884 Bird Ave, Coconut Grove.
A recent experience inspired this very special event. Amoroso came home to see smoke rising from the house he shared with Patricia, his wife. The fire, which destroyed many of his life’s work, while devastating, is the beginning of a new chapter. He has found a new studio for his paintbrushes, and is back to creating. Amoroso will literally rise from the ashes to display his works.

Jack Amoroso first came from Boston to South Florida at the age of eighteen, and thought it was a “rather groovy place; a place where a young artist could survive.” Two years later he made his move to Coconut Grove permanent, and began his long and storied career as a many faceted creative.

Amoroso is a veritable legend of the Grove art scene. A founder of the Coconut Grove Arts Festival, Director of the Playhouse Gallery, and widely exhibited throughout his seventy plus year career, he is highly accredited worldwide.

Dubbed “The Last of the Bohemians,” and coming in to his professional own during the 1960s and 70s, he falls in line with other great masters of modernism. Like Duchamps, he turns the most common of objects into art. Like Matisse, Amoroso is a master of color. And like his friend and mentor Picasso, Amoroso utilizes almost every medium, and has perfected the Cubist’s perspective.

Event guests will be treated to music, amazing art, and signature martinis courtesy of Findlandia Vodka, and specially selected wines and lite bites by Happy Wine. Special desserts will be presented by Craving Sweets.
The event will feature a special presentation with the City of Miami and City of Miami Fire Department.
Amoroso is the embodiment of le joie de vivre, and this exhibit represents: A Lifetime of Artistry.
“A Lifetime of Artistry” opening will take place

These exploits have earned him a faithful legion of fans, including celebrities like Josh Groban (whom he supported on a World Tour), Dave Matthews, Naomi Campbell, Forest Whitaker, Leonardo DiCaprio, Donna Karan (who included his music on her iPhone app, as well as multiple presidents including Barack & Michelle Obama (whom he performed for in the East Room of the White House). www.elewrockjazz.com

“Roofs Rising” Represents Miami’s Greatest Reminder That Housing Ends Homelessness
Miami-Dade County Homeless Trust Creates Art Installation to Ignite Awareness and Support Among Landlords About Homeless Housing Programs
November 8 – 15 at Brickell City Centre

More than 1,000 people call Miami streets home. The Miami-Dade County Homeless Trust wants to change that by growing its stock of available rental units to house the homeless. To help raise awareness of this goal, and in honor of Homeless Awareness Day, November 9, 2017, the Homeless Trust is launching an art installation called “Roofs Rising”– an initiative that encourages the public to rethink the connections they have to landlords who may have available housing.

Roofs Rising is mosaic made up of more than 1,000 hand painted mini-homes laid out in the shape of one large house. Each house was painted by a different student, elected official, community leader or activist.

“Roofs Rising may be Miami’s greatest reminder to date that housing ends homelessness,” said Ronald L. Book, Chairman of the Miami-Dade County Homeless Trust.  “Our entire community needs to coalesce around the issue of affordable and supportive housing for homeless individuals and families, while learning about our RentConnect initiative, set up to fund homeless housing. We are using Roofs Rising as a non-traditional way to identify rental units so we can get more people off the streets, out of shelters, and on to living new lives full of hope and potential.”

Designed to call attention to the homeless housing needs in our community and to educate people about RentConnect, each house represents a homeless person living on Miami streets and in need of a home. The mini-homes will eventually become house-warming gifts to those in the Trust’s Continuum of Care, but more importantly, serve to open doors and pathways for supportive housing solutions for those most vulnerable in Miami-Dade.

The Homeless Trust’s RentConnect provides a team of housing professionals who connect landlords with tenants. The initiative provides guaranteed rent, high touch support for landlords and renters, security deposit support and claims based mitigation funds. Landlords wanting to register properties with the Homeless Trust should visit www.homelesstrust.org or call 305-375-5605.

More than thirty organizations– such as Ransom Everglades School, Florida International University, Chapman Partnership, Swire Properties, local elected officials and even federal officials – gave of their time and talent to decorate and paint houses and to assemble the project into a16’x20’ piece of art open to the public.

This unique art installation is being constructed as a first time project by Life Is Art, a Miami Beach based arts organization creating positive change in the community through art and culture events.

For more information on hosting the Roofs Rising art installation in your community, contact Adrienna Sotomayor at 305-571-1455.

About the band
Jarabe de Palo is unquestionably one of the biggest bands on the Hispano-American music scene in the last two decades.
However, Spain is currently embracing three big music genres: Latin, African and Anglo-Saxon (not forgetting its own flamenco, of course). This wealth of musical influences has helped to shape their music and given it its unique character.
Rock, funk, jazz and blues in a fusion with flamenco, Afro-Caribbean, Cuban and Brazilian music. Influences with a definite Latin feel intermeshed with other very strong musical influences from the Anglo-Saxon world. The result: pure fusion rock.
Jarabe de Palo was born in Barcelona (Spain) in the mid-1990s. The band’s first album, La Flaca (1996), opened up a new chapter in the fusion music scene of that time. In a very short space of time they became one of the most high-profile Spanish groups on the Latin-American music scene. Their unique way of understanding and mixing different styles made them one of the landmark bands in their genre. After La Flaca came Depende (1998), then De Vuelta y Vuelta(2001), Bonito (2003) and so on up to eight original albums and the same number of compilations, all published over the course of just 18 years.
15 nominations for the Latin Grammy Awards and collaborations with artists of the stature of Celia Cruz, Compay Segundo, Pavarotti, Alanis Morrissette, Chrissy Hynde (The Pretenders), endorse the quality, credibility and stature of the band.
