During the Miami Downtown Development Authority‘s annual Art Days Weekend 2017, residents of all ages throughout greater Miami are invited to experience the global walking movement called Jane’s Walk.

On Saturday, Oct. 14th neighborhoods within the Miami DDA’s boundaries – including Brickell, Downtown, and Omni – are going to feature several free, citizen-led walking tours where attendees can actively connect with friends and neighbors outdoors, while engaging in conversations with one another and learning more about the ways arts & culture have and will impact the area.

These kind of walks, inspired by a writer and activist from the 1960s named Jane Jacobs, have engaged tens of thousands of people all over the world in 200+ cities since 2007. Earlier in 2017 Jane’s Walk (aka #MiamiWalks) held 7 unique walking tours across Miami which 75+ residents attended, and we’re looking forward to meeting lots of new people!

Here’s the basic schedule, with full details on each walk in links:

What/Who:
The Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami (MOCA) is offering its monthly series known as Creative Arts 4 Kids, which occurs the first Saturday of every month. These creative art classes are offered for kids ages 6 through 12. Each month, the class will have a different theme to help kids learn about the elements of art through painting, drawing and sculpting activities in the style of renowned artists.

For October, the theme is Portraits of the Great Minds inspired by Robin Morris. The activity for the children is acrylic painting. Parents and caregivers are encouraged to stay and create with their children.

When:
Saturday, October 7, 2017, 2-4 p.m.

How/Cost:
$18 per class, $60 for a four-class series for the general public.
$12 per class, $40 for a four-class series for MOCA members, NOMI residents and City employees.
There is a $2 discount for each additional child in the household.

M83 serves as composer and musical director for VOLTATM

Cirque du Soleil is thrilled to announce a new production that will premiere in Miami this December: Cirque du Soleil VOLTATM, written and directed by Bastien Alexandre and with Jean Guibert as the director of creation. International electronic group M83, previously announced as composer and musical director, brings his space-age future pop sound to the Cirque du Soleil stage for the first time ever. The show will be presented under the Big Top next to the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami starting December 15, 2017. The name VOLTA refers to a sudden about-face, a change in emotion or idea often used in poetry. It also speaks to the jolt of energy delivered through the show.

The show
VOLTA tells a spellbinding story about the freedom to choose and the thrill of blazing your own trail. Inspired in part by the adventurous spirit that fuels the culture of action sports, the show weaves the adrenaline rush of acrobatics into a visually striking world driven by a stirring melodic score.

VOLTA is a story of transformation. It is about being true to oneself, fulfilling one’s true potential, and the power of the group to make that possible. It celebrates freedom as a movement.

WAZ, a popular gameshow host, has lost touch with his inner self in the pursuit of fame, pulling others in the trap of instant glory. But as doubt sets in, WAZ is enlightened by childhood memories as he encounters “free spirits” who open doors to his inner soul he has long kept shut. On his high-voltage search for meaning, will WAZ find the courage to relinquish his fame, reconnect with his true self, and shine bright?

Guitars Over Guns proudly hosts the 4th annual Choose Your Sound Benefit Concert presented by the Miami Marlins on November 11th, 2017 at the University of Miami’s Donna Shalala Student Center, 7pm – 11pm. This year’s Choose Your Sound is gearing up to be an epic evening of music and fun in the name of our community’s future young leaders. Get down to the sounds of the 60s R&B and soul, with musical favorites performed by an all-star band comprised of Guitars Over Guns mentors and alumni, including Andrew DeMuro from Team Adam of NBC’s The Voice, Season 11 and Guitars Over Guns’ regional director of Chicago.

Guests will enjoy delicious food from SuViche and Novecento with drinks from Russian Standard Vodka, Wynwood Brewery, Rosé Piscine and Southern Wine and Spirits. A robust silent auction featuring 5-star trips, experiences, art and more will also be a highlight of the evening.

Last year with the community’s support, Guitars Over Guns raised $102,000 for programs to empower young people through mentorship and music. Thanks to this support, 626 kids were served at 14 sites as of July 2017, bringing the total to over 2,000 youth served over the last 9 years. This year our goal is to raise $150,000 allowing us to transform the future for 500 additional students living in Miami-Dade County’s most disadvantaged communities.

This event celebrates the important role that Guitars Over Guns’ arts-based mentoring programs have in keeping Miami’s young people inspired, engaged, and prepared to be successful adults. Our unique style of mentorship through the arts opens the necessary doors to create the opportunity for student success —in and out of the classroom. These young people living in Miami’s underserved communities need positive alternatives to the dangerous influences that dominate their environments. Cuts in funding for the arts and after school programs mean our students have less opportunities than ever, and as the news reports of youth violence continue to pour in, we are reminded all too often that our work has never been so important.

After an unprecedented 2016 season, Seaspice Brasserie and Lounge continues revolutionizing Miami’s Live Music scene, opening this season with two time Latin Grammy nominated singer songwriter Diana Fuentes.
Diana Fuentes, the second Cuban singer songwriter signed on by Sony Music after Celia Cruz, is a leader within the flourishing generation of performers and musicians from Cuba. Her second album, Planeta Planetario, was a joint artistic collaboration with renowned Puerto Rican musician and producer, Eduardo Cabra (Visitante), member of the band Calle 13.

She started her musical career in 2001 after she joined the Afro Cuban fusion band Sintesis, who was nominated for a Latin Grammy in 2002 for the album Habana Flor de Piel and she went on to collaborate with musicians likeDescemer Bueno (singer-songwriter of “Bailando”) Carlos Varela (singer-songwriter of theme song “Una Palabra” of the movie “Men on Fire” starring Denzel Washington), Tommy Torres (singer ft “La Fortuna”), Pablo Milanes andJoan Manuel Serrat ( Cuba Canta a Serrat ), to name a few.
Her latest single release, “La Vida Me Cambio” from her new Album, “Todo Esta Pasando” was a special collaboration with Gente De Zona; where both artists joined forces to create a summer hit single produced by Grammy award winner Motiff and filmed in Cuba by the famous director Alejandro Perez of “Bailando” and “La Gozadera”. The single is an explosion of energy and happiness with colorful choreography which will make you get up and dance.

Florida Foster Care Review promotes the safety, well-being and long-term success of abused and neglected children through volunteer-driven case reviews and system level advocacy. Forum Productions, in conjunction with the Greenhouse Theater Center NFP, is seeking actors and actresses to portray the lead and supporting roles in Truman and the Birth of Israel, a world premiere play by Chicago playwright William Spatz. Auditions will be held on Friday, September 29, from 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. at Mizner Park Cultural Center, 201 Plaza Real in Boca Raton. The production will make its debut on March 21, 2018 and will run through April 8, 2018. Rehearsals start on March 4.

From humble beginnings as a poor farmer, soldier and failed businessman to the unimaginable: president and thrust headlong into global turmoil, Truman and the Birth of Israel tells the real story of how one Missouri man’s unlikely rise to power changed the future of the Jewish people forever. The show is directed by Clayton Phillips and produced by Forum Productions, the highly acclaimed comprehensive stage and theater company based in Chicago. The company has produced/co-produced 17 plays including the well-received Churchill and Solo Celebration!, a series of one-actor plays all staged at the Greenhouse Theater in Chicago.

Actors and actresses (including understudies) are being sought for the following roles:

HARRY S. TRUMAN: (Equity/Non-equity); 50s – late 60s, 33rd President of the United States; Proper and plainspoken but with a temper, Missouri Midwestern drawl with a blunt, yet folksy disposition.

CLARK CLIFFORD: (Non-equity); Early 40s – mid 50s; A lawyer and close friend of Truman’s, handsome, fit, calm and sophisticated.

MELVYN BELLI (Non-equity): Late 30s – 50s; An attorney for the defense who is sarcastic, aggressive and incites provocation.

EDDIE JACOBSON: (Non-equity); 50s – 60s; A close friend of Truman’s; in real life paunchy and balding, soft-spoken, under-educated, comes across as an awkward country fellow from Missouri but his easygoing personality makes him a good salesman.

BELLA ABZUG: (Non-equity); early 30s – early 40s; Truman’s attorney, an unmistakable New Yorker, born of Russian Jewish parents, with personality galore. Not a shrinking violet, though she’s both advocating for and attacking the former President of the United States.

AL SCHWIMMER: (Non-equity); 40s – 50s; Witness for the defense who is a handsome and commanding presence – forceful and confident.

Inspired by the historic 1970s film “Painters Painting,” Girls’ Club presents a mini-documentary interviewing 11 artists from in their studios – in Miami, Hollywood, New York and New Jersey. Featured artists include Harumi Abe, Elisabeth Condon, Julie Davidow, Louise Fishman, Joanne Greenbaum, Sharon Horvath, Amy Mahnick, Beatriz Monteavaro, Vickie Pierre, Joan Snyder, and Shoshanna Weinberger. Interviewed and filmed by Girls’ Club directors Sarah Michelle Rupert and Michelle Weinberg, the artists share their personal stories, backgrounds, and theories on art, feminism and navigating the art world. Join us for the closing reception of a comprehensive exhibition of works by the famed Miami artist, Purvis Young (1943-2010).
Purvis Young was born in Liberty City in 1943 and grew up in what was still known in his youth as “Colored Town”, now called Overtown. He grew up with few prospects for achieving anything like the “American Dream” in his lifetime. He dropped out of all-black Booker T. Washington High School after 10th grade, and by age 18 was serving four years of hard time a Raiford State Prison for burglary. Prison, however, brought him back to drawing, and when he returned to the streets of Overtown in the early 1960s he was eager to express himself through art. Purvis painted and drew constantly. His work reflected the despair and injustice of the urban and immigrant poor in Miami, as well as the larger national issues of the time – the Vietnam War, urban riots, police brutality the vast influx of refugees from all parts of the world. Despite the hard times, Purvis also reflected hope and redemption in his paintings – angels, saints, freedom horses and the promise of new life. The work is simple and sometimes even brutal, but few who see it can fail to be moved.

Purvis Young’s works can be seen in more than 40 public galleries and museums, including the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the American Folk Art Museum, the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Corcoran Gallery. Several eminent art collectors, including Mera and Donald Rubell, William Arnett, Skot Foreman and others have acquired large numbers of Young’s work.

Ken Brown co-founder of Gallery 2014 will present a talk about the collection and Purvis’s life and times at 3:00pm.

Faena Art announces the next edition of the art installation ángeles veloces arcanos fugaces, an immersive, participatory and site-specific work created by ‘assume vivid astro focus (avaf)’. The installation re-imagines a roller dancing rink as an art experience and includes a line-up of DJs and performers who will activate the roller rink with their own practice while the public is invited to dance and skate within the installation. This participatory work establishes a new platform for social interaction in the Faena Forum. October 6, 8 PM: Batuke Samba Funk plays at Arts Garage in Delray Beach. The Batuke Samba Funk project was created in 2010 by the Brazilian bassist, composer Diogo Brown, who invited the singer Mari Macedo and the musicians Cezar Santana (guitar), Adriano De Borba (cavaco). Between January and February 2014, Silas Silva Filho (drummer) joined the band, completing the project.

The idea of the project is to “Brazilianize” American sounds and “Americanize” Brazilian sounds in a combination of the two cultures, Funk and Samba, increasingly promoting Brazilian culture in the world with dance and an engaging melody.

This event has been custom designed for those with physical and cognitive challenges to create an environment of support and inclusion by making the dream of flight a reality for those in the special needs community.

At age 15, she represented the USA at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona, Spain in the sport of rhythmic gymnastics. After being a three time USA National Champion and competing in World Class international events, she moved on to dancing professionally in NYC & Los Angeles.
Tamara’s versatility as a dancer, gymnast, rhythmic gymnast, aerial artist and contortionist led her to having an over 20 year career as a working professional dancer. She danced on three world tours with Madonna (Drowned World, Reinvention, Confessions), and alongside other countless popular artists. Her off-Broadway NYC debut was in hit aerial shows “De La Guarda”, and later became part of the original cast of “Fuerzabruta”.
Mrs. Levinson is currently working as a choreographer & movement therapist. Tamara has been teaching all styles of movement for over 20 years and continues to consistently create works of her own in all mediums of movement art.

Your body is your only true home. The only thing you can’t escape or hide from, therefore the greatest tool you own that to be able to search other dimensions of self and release blocks the body stores. Movement therapy is a very personal experience of self-exploration guided by Tamara Levinson within a safe space of fellow BEYOUtiful warriors all uniting to connect on a deeper level.
Tamara will guide you through various exercises where you will be challenged to creatively use your imagination to explore your inner being. The movement is the tool, the breathe is the map, the voice is the reminder. Be prepared to move free and explore all aspects of self unapologetically.

Grovetoberfest is back in the Grove, and it’s bigger than ever. For the past six years, the festival has served up one of the top craft beer events in the country, attracting close to 7,000 beer enthusiasts eager to drink unlimited samples of 400 beers from hundreds of breweries, all while listening to Live music. This year, festival organizers worked closely with Coconut Grove Commissioner Ken Russell to move back to where it all began in Peacock Park, and the news has been met with great excitement.

To celebrate, Grovetoberfest has put together a great lineup including “first time” pours from 81 Bay Brew Company, Aslin Beer Company, Hidden Springs Ale Works, Lord Hobo Brewing, Ocleot Brewing, and Proof Brewing Company. Some returning heavyweights include 3 Sons Brewing Co., Octave Brewing, and Odd Breed Wild Ales. Also returning will be Angry Chair Brewing, Civil Society Brewing, and J. Wakefield Brewing. In addition, Grovetoberfest will have treatments from LauderAle Brewing, 26° Brewing Company, and 81Bay Brewing Co. The Homegrown Pavilion will delight beer drinkers with a collection of up and coming Florida brewers.

This year, the festival’s Kitchen Lab will be presented by Macy’s. The chefs, who will be conducting demos that pair well with beer, hail from Grove Bay Hospitality Group and include Chef Jeff McInnis and Janine Booth from Stiltsville Fish Bar, Chef Brett Hessler from American Harvest, Chef Jeremy Ford from Stubborn Seed and Chef Giorgio Rapicavoli from Glass and Vine.

The VIP Lounge will be hosted by Chef M from Latin House Grill and as in the past, VIP ticket holders have access to certain perks not available to the general ticket holder such as early entrance, specialty brews, covered seating area and air-conditioned bathrooms.

Downtown Fright Night has tricks, treats, and eats for ALL fans of the most fun holiday of the year!
The Stranger Things Family Fun Zone will keep the young (and young at heart) entertained from afternoon until evening with magic shows, music, science, face painting, arts and crafts, games, bounce houses, and a costume contest!

What better way to kick off Stone Crab Season than to enjoy it by the sea at the iconic Miami Marine Stadium with seafood vendors, live Caribbean beats, a family fun zone, mojito bars, and more! The Coconut Grove Seafood Festival is a waterfront celebration of all things seafood. With proceeds going towards Celebration of the Sea Foundation, the two-day event will offer South Florida the chance to savor some of the freshest seafood all-day-long with over 25 gourmet seafood partners. The Rusty Pelican will be hosting a benefit, Pouring for a Cause, to raise funds for those people impacted by Hurricane Irma. Guests will be treated to cocktails created specifically for the event by some of South Florida’s best bartenders, including Rusty Pelican’s own resident mixologist Oscar Amaya. The evening will include over fifteen different drink stations supported by beverage brands distributed in Florida by Breakthru Beverage including Soul Premium Cachaça, Stoli THE Vodka, Galliano L’Autentico, Lucas Bols, Hendrick’s Gin, Papa Pilar Rum, SuerteTequila, Red Bull Energy Drinks, Sailor Jerry Spiced Rum, VOSS Water, Flora de Cana Rum, Old Forester Collection, Herradura Tequila, Michter’s Whiskeys, Gallo Wines, and others. The esteemed Fontsquared has been appointed the curators of the fair. The husband and wife artist team, Ignacio and Jean Font ( https://fontsquared.org ), aim to create a uniform work of art by considering shape, form and color in their careful selection of works.

Miami New Times’ Iron Fork celebrates its tenth anniversary Thursday, October 5, 2017, at the Hyatt Regency Miami. Dining enthusiasts can enjoy dishes from some of the finest restaurants in South Florida. The event’s footprint will extend into the James L. Knight Center’s world-class theater and entertainment venue next door.

This year’s Iron Fork will grow exponentially, bringing culinary creations from more than 75 of South Florida’s luxury and fine-dining restaurants, including Amore de Miami, the Brick, Toro Toro, Texas de Brazil, Cibo Wine Bar, Morton’s Steak House, Dr. Limon Ceviche, Caja Caliente, Wine Date, Sensory Delight, Soyka, and Kaori, to name a few.

In addition, New Times is proud to announce a partnership with the Miami Rescue Mission. For almost a century, its outreach centers have been housing the homeless across South Florida. Today the mission’s Miami-Dade and Broward centers serve more than 1,300 men, women, and children each day. Last year, the organization served more than a million meals, many of them to hungry children. It also houses approximately 800 people in residential, life-changing programs. Guests can participate in a special raffle during the event, with 100 percent of all proceeds going to support the cause.

On Sunday, September 24, the Global Arts Project and the Collins Park Neighborhood Association will present their last FREE ArtScape concert of the season from 4-7 PM, in Collins Park, 2100 Collins Ave, starring singer Lisett Morales, “La Mulata del Sabor,” celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month. The program will open with a set by students of Gremmy-winning musician and educator Dr Ed Calle, as part of Global Arts Project’s Educational Outreach Program.

Lisett Morales arrived in Miami from her native Cuba and quickly rose to stardom singing for president George W. Bush at The Miami Arena. Lisett made her Off-Broadway debut as an Actress with “Celia (The Life and Music of Celia Cruz).” This role landed her as the lead singer of the “Celia Cruz All Stars”.

She has shared the stage with famous artists such as Jose Alberto “el Canario,” Oscar de Leon, La India, Albita, Tito Puente Jr., Isaac Delgado, Marlow Rosado, Willy Chirino, Domingo Quiñones and many more.

Salsa dancers will perform, sharing the dance floor with the audience.

Auditions will be held on Friday, September 8, from 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. at Mizner Park Cultural Center, 201 Plaza Real in Boca Raton. The production will make its debut on March 21, 2018 and will run through April 8, 2018. Rehearsals start on March 4.

The show is directed by Clayton Phillips and produced by Forum Productions, the highly acclaimed comprehensive stage and theater company based in Chicago. The company has produced/co-produced 17 plays including the well-received Churchill and Solo Celebration!, a series of one-actor plays all staged at the Greenhouse Theater in Chicago.
