In their fourth season, MMF will also present a series of Faculty Recitals as part of the MMF Piano Institute.
Claude Debussy’s enchanting Suite Bergamesque, with its immortal moonlit vignette Claire de lune, is the starting point for Anton Nel’s widely varied program, which also captures the essence of Debussy as filtered through the Hungarian lens of Zoltan Kodaly in his Meditation sur un motif de Claude Debussy. Nel offers Robert Schumann’s reflections on a Viennese carnival in Faschingsschwank aus Wien, Op. 26, and the journey ends with Beethoven’s valedictory Piano Sonata No. 21, the “Waldstein.” Anton Nel returns for his second season as part of the MMF Piano Institute faculty. He holds the Endowed Chair of Piano and Keyboard Studies at the Butler School of Music, University of Texas at Austin.

Bubbles, Michael Jackson’s Chimp, Really Does Paint!

Miami, June 8, 2017: After great success at Art Basel 2012, the paintings by Michael Jackson’s chimpanzee, Bubbles, and many others will be on display for 10 days at Frames USA & Art Gallery in Miami. The opening reception will be on July 21, 2017 from 6pm-10pm where the public can view and purchase a very unique piece of original ape art.

“Purchasing a piece of original art by apes is a collectible. It creates conversation, it is a form of expression, and it is rare”, Adam Brand says, owner of Frames USA. “Not to mention that the proceeds from the sales of the art will go to an amazing cause”

Over the years, zoos and sanctuaries have dabbled into selling artwork at their gift shops by resident animals to raise money. However, the purpose of this art show, Apes that Paint, extends beyond that. It seeks to establish the fact that apes are artists without judgment and second that these ape artists are contributing to the fundraising efforts for The Center for Great Apes, located in Wauchula, Florida.

Aside from artworks from our star artist Bubbles, the exhibition will host other wonderful original pieces from celebrity apes. Among them, the art of chimpanzees from Planet of the Apes, and orangutans from the movie Going Apes, and NBC’s soap opera Passions. The crowd will enjoy complimentary food and wine sponsored by Carolina Ale House and a limited-edition gift with their RSVP to the event. For free admission and gift, RSVP at http://www.framesusamiami.com/frames-usa-events-1.html by July 18.

Come experience this unique art show and take an exciting piece home that will marvel friends and family, and learn about a sanctuary that helps protect chimpanzee and orangutans.

Sunday, June 11 7:00 PM: The exciting group Palo! performs at Arts Garage. They have been nominated for a Grammy and a Latin Grammy for their album PALO! Live. They perform their own style of Tropical music they call “Afro-Cuban Funk”. Just think “funky, jazzed-up salsa”. Or better yet, listen to some of their music. The group’s unique, danceable sound blends the allure of Cuban music with funky beats and jazzy improvisation.

The New York Post proclaims “Afro-Cuban Funk is Cuban music for the new generation. And the leader of the sound is the Miami based band PALO!”

PALO! began in 2003. That’s when producer/pianist Steve Roitstein (Celia Cruz, Willy Chirino, Tito Puente, Cheo Feliciano, Oscar d’ Leon) invited his fellow musicians to join him in an improvised musical experiment combining Cuban music with funk beats. PALO!’s catchy original songs feature the sultry vocals of Latin Grammy-nominated Leslie Cartaya. The scorching percussion and vocals of Philbert Armenteros (congas) and Raymer Olalde (timbales) punctuate the performances with Cuban fire. Steve Roitstein fuses these elements with a foundation of edgy, unforgettable rhythms. The virtuosity of saxophonist Dr. Ed Calle was featured from 2003 until Dr. Calle left the band in early 2017.

The band has become a featured act in Miami’s premiere live music venues, concerts, festivals and private events. PALO! has performed for packed houses and festivals in major cities in North America, Latin America and Europe.

In June of 2016, PALO! released their third album Yo Quiero Guarachar, with the hit “Al Monte”. As of this writing the song has received over 1.3 million views on the Internet. In July 2016, the band enjoyed a successful European tour, including Paris, Luxembourg, Belgium, Amsterdam, and the prestigious Tempo Latino Festival in France, where they were named “Padrinos” of the Festival and Best New Artist, 2016.

Arts Garage is located at 94 NE 2nd Ave in Delray Beach. Tickets are $30-$40-$45 at artsgarage.org or 561-450-6357. BRING YOUR OWN … WHATEVER! The theater boasts cabaret style table seating, where patrons can bring their own food and drinks, including alcohol. Music courtesy of KCC Productions.

Rolando Grooscors is a rare find on today’s jazz scene: a unique voice that strengthens and expands the jazz idiom with sensitivity, clarity, and uncompromising integrity. Rolando’s warm, expressive tones and impeccable phrasing have been delighting audiences wherever he goes.

The two-time Grammy nominee and 2011 winner was born in Caracas, Venezuela. His love for Brazil motivated him to start different projects where Brazilian music was infused with Latin and Jazz influences. Here he began to develop a Jazz/Fusion style. The experience greatly influenced Rolando’s musical development. On 14 albums as a sideman, Rolando has recorded his own CD, “Thankful,” which has garnered positive criticism and acclaim from notable jazz musicians. The band is a sextet including Piano/keyboards, Bass, Sax/wind controller, drums, and percussion. His compositions have been called “masterful” and with the attention already received, Rolando is pushing himself to have his voice defined in music, both as a sideman and as a band leader.

“Rolando’s guitar playing is on another level, Yet on this higher plane, Rolando’s soulful, creative, twelve tone improvisatory style is always completely accessible and joyous. Rolando displays a wide variety of styles and concepts with his harmonic and melodic imagery capturing the essence of musical freedom, spirit and sensual.” -Darryl Tookes

In their fourth season, MMF will also present a series of Faculty Recitals as part of the MMF Piano Institute.

The Dallas Morning News calls his playing “an out-of-body experience.” Italian pianist Alessio Bax joins the MMF Piano Institute as a visiting artist for the first time, bringing a program spanning the classical era to the 20th century. Mozart borrows a tune from his own Clarinet Quintet to build a set of Six Variations, which join Alexander Scriabin’s Sonata No. 3 and Ravel’s La Valse, a ground-breaking reflection on the classical waltz. Hailed as “one of the most remarkable young pianists before the public,” Bax maintains a busy performance schedule while also serving—along with his wife, the pianist Lucille Chung—as the Johnson-Prothro Artists-in-Residence at Southern Methodist University’s Meadows School of the Arts.

“Dance Now, Think Later!” Miami’s Only Conscious Morning Dance Party on 6/4/17 at Inhale Miami

Miami’s Only Conscious Morning Dance Party Is Back!

What is it? A morning dance party to benefit The Gratitude Project in South Africa and YogaKidz Foundation. It’s called “Dance Now, Think Later”. We’re holding this enticing event to bring together friends and families to bring nourishment for the body mind and soul.

Why hold a morning dance party? We believe that if you move your morning you can move your day. The founder of DNTL, Liza Pitsirilos, faced some personal health challenges that made mornings difficult for her. She soon realized that by rolling out of bed and getting moving before you think too much about it can literally change your entire day. She’s held several virtual dance challenges where participants worldwide have tuned in with their morning ritual of using music to move their morning and move their bodies. Fascinating stories of improved outlook, bursts of energy and better health have resulted. Her and the DNTL team moved it from a “virtual” challenge to a LIVE event where lots of people join in community, connection and shared intention to use dance as a great way to start the day.

“Dance Now Think Later” Philosophy:

Move your morning. Move your day
Move your day. Move your life
Move your life. Move the world!

Who can attend? Come one, come all, short, young, old & tall. If you can move, if you love to dance and you enjoy the energy of positive, uplifting people…join us!

Haitian-born but Brooklyn-bred, Jean Chardavoine is a concrete manifestation of the new emerging genre “Haitian Jazz.” Jennifer Louis is a Miami based vocalist whose performance experience can best be described as nothing short of electric. Mike Levine is a man of many talents whose career is a blend of different aspects of music and Kenneth Jimenez is a young talent emerging in the South Florida Jazz scene. Stand up comedians and graff writers have a lot in common – both hustling nonstop to make their visions a reality. This coming Sunday at Yo Space Gallery & Studios we’re going to prove it by throwing these two cultures a shindig where these artforms can thrive.
This innovative new night will welcome graffiti writers and street artists to swap slaps and sketchbooks (think: Writer’s Bench http://www.at149st.com/bench.html) and add in an open mic starting midway into the night, including comedy, spoken word, music and more.
Hosted by comics Regi Desjardins and Abe Perez, there’ll be plenty going on to keep you entertained while you get down in a sketchbook or trade some stickers with fellow collectors.
We’ll have refreshments, and as always ping pong table and N64 to fill in the gaps and everything else you need for a laid back good time.

Whereas we have had in previous years 2000 people march in Miami alone and over 10,000 people across our great state! Help us make this march the strongest impact ever!

Our goal is to have another amazing community event, with all of our collective, diverse groups gathering together under the Adrienne Arsht Metro Mover to march in solidarity for the health of our people, our water, soil & planet, our farmers around the world and to save biodiversity of seeds, stop the genetically Modified mosquitoes and to educate the citizens of Miami about the adverse health effects associated with GMOs & glyphosate and expose Monsanto’s corrupt business practices.

We aim to inform the community about what we are putting in our bodies and encourage people to be the change they wish to see by supporting local farmers, voting with our dollar, growing our own food and sharing with our neighbors.

This is a peaceful march and family friendly event so bring the kids!! BRING COLORFUL, CREATIVE SIGNS, COSTUMES, CHANTS, & DRUMS! Carpool, Uber or Lyft, take public transportation, and be sure to bring a refillable water container! (PLS NO PLASTIC) Let’s march for a beautiful GMO-Free world!

On Tuesday, May 23rd, at 6PM the Miami Design District invites the community to join in on the conversation during this month’s session of Creative Minds Talks featuring Daniel Libeskind, Founder and Principal Architect at Studio Libeskind, and Jon Stuart, Dean for Cultural and Community Engagement, FIU College of Architecture + The Arts. Creative Minds Talks is a series of talks, hosted by Miami Design District featuring high profile guests from the industries of fashion, design, architecture and art. The talks aim to pair two notable names from similar fields for a dialogue that serves to educate, inspire, entertain and promote creative fields of the cultural world.

ABOUT THE PANELISTS:

Daniel Libeskind is the founder and principal architect at Studio Libeskind. As Principal Design Architect for Studio Libeskind, Mr. Libeskind speaks widely on the art of architecture in universities and professional summits. Libeskind was also selected as master planner for the World Trade Center redevelopment. His architecture and ideas have been the subject of many articles and exhibitions, influencing the field of architecture and the development of cities and culture. In 2003, Studio Libeskind won an historic competition—to create a master plan for the rebuilding of the World Trade Center in Lower Manhattan. In addition to a towering spire of 1,776 feet, the Libeskind design study proposed a complex program encompassing a memorial, underground museum, the integration of the slurry wall, special transit hub and four office towers. This plan is being realized today.

John Stuart is the Dean for Cultural and Community Engagement, Executive Director of Miami Beach Urban Studios, and Professor at Florida International University. He is also an architectural historian and a visual artist developing collaborative research projects on complexity, community, identity, technology, the environment and public space with funding from Van Alen Institute, The National Endowment for the Arts, The National Science Foundation, The National Endowment for the Humanities, and The Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts.
