Tri-Rail, South Florida’s premier commuter rail system, invites talented young singers, ages 5 to 17, to audition for the annual “South Florida’s Kids Got Talent” competition, to be held at the Museum of Discovery and Science (MODS) (401 SW 2nd Street, Fort Lauderdale). Auditions will take place from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, November 23, offering participants from Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach counties the chance to showcase their vocal abilities and compete for a spot in the 2025 final event.

Tri-Rail’s “South Florida’s Kids Got Talent” competition has become a signature event, uniting children and families across the region. All performers aged 5 to 17 that reside in South Florida are invited to audition. Each act will have up to four minutes to perform in front of a panel of judges who will select the finalists for the main competition in February 2025, during Tri-Rail’s 16th annual “Rail Fun Day,” presented by Herzog. Judges will score based on vocal range, stage presence, and style.

Over the years, “Rail Fun Day” has grown into a beloved community event in Dania Beach, featuring interactive activities, food trucks, cookie decorating, face painting, and more. Last year’s event saw ten-year-old Samantha Schmerling take home the grand prize with her vocal performance, earning her $500, a one-year contract inclusive of a photo shoot with composite cards courtesy of Posche Models & Talent, and a professional studio recording session with MikeSoperMusic.

To secure an audition slot, participants must register at https://bit.ly/SFKGT2024 on or before Tuesday, November 19.

American Heritage Schools [ahschool.com], the top-ranked PK3 through 12 college preparatory school in Florida, is proud to announce its annual “K-9 Cause: An Evening of Art” auction benefiting the Broward Sheriff’s Foundation’s Retired Canine Relief Fund, on Saturday, April 20.

Everyone loves dogs; however, police dogs, or K-9s, are a special breed. Instead of enjoying the pampered pet lifestyle, K-9s dedicate their entire lives to working daily to protect and serve citizens in our community along with their fearless handlers. They are considered law enforcement officers, whose duties include constant training, apprehending suspects, and searching for explosives, drugs, and missing persons.

When the K-9s retire, their law enforcement handlers graciously adopt them and continue to care for them, as these K-9s have become their friends for life. Recognizing that the medical and healthcare for these K-9s can get quite costly, the Broward Sheriff’s Foundation has established the Retired K-9 Healthcare Fund. This Fund pays for up to 50% of the wellness care costs for all retired K-9s from any local law enforcement agency in Broward County.

Inspired by a little boy’s passion for animals and art, American Heritage Schools is raising money to “fund this fund” by selling artistic renditions of these fine K-9s. Jackson Laurie, a sophomore at American Heritage Schools, and his parents Dr. Douglas Laurie and Nikki Laurie-Van Allen have partnered with the National Art Honor Society and the award-winning Fine Arts faculty at American Heritage to create artwork of these very K-9 being honored.

American Heritage Schools, Broward Campus, will be hosting a Silent Auction for these original works of art, as well as a limited supply of prints for sale at our K-9 Cause event. 100% of all funds raised from this event will benefit the Broward Sheriff Foundation’s Retired K-9 Relief Fund.

This exhibit is a poetic rather political approach to the contemporary currents, appreciating the grammar of a certain identity and idea.

The female form rendered by women artists reflecting 7 unique perspectives with eloquent voices rendered through a visual narrative, a herstory, shared by all women and evolved over millennia.

Imagine the future. Set in 2050, Miami’s famed museum-park, the Deering Estate, has been converted into a residential complex made up of tenants who have been displaced or retreated from different parts of the world due to climate change. When rooms become available, they decide to host their first open house while re-opening partially as an art space after recent repairs.

The public is invited to visit the property and learn about their way of life. The personal lives and conflicts of the residents, and other strange phenomena, get in the way, and visitors must navigate scenes that explore notions of community, climate change empowerment, loss and love.

Conceived by Susan Caraballo, resident artist at Live Arts Miami and Deering Estate, written by Juan C. Sánchez and co-directed by Jennifer De Castroverde. Created in collaboration with over 30 Miami-based artists.

Prelude to 2100 consists of two experiential components: the TOUR and the OPEN HOUSE.

The TOUR provides audiences with an intimate walking tour of the complex and introduces many of its current residents through an immersive theatrical experience.
The free OPEN HOUSE in Deering Estate’s Courtyard features various interactive installations and performances by diverse Miami-based artists.

For almost 30 years, The Everglades Foundation, with the support of organizations like the Florida Realtors®, whose 200,000 members represent Florida’s largest trade association, has been working to restore the vital Everglades ecosystem. This FREE Zoom event, open to the general public, brings together the top leadership of The Everglades Foundation and Florida Realtors® for an in-depth discussion on how Florida Real Estate Depends on Everglades Restoration.

Florida’s real estate industry depends on clean water – and clean water depends on Everglades restoration. From luxury waterfront condos along Florida’s coasts, or single-family homes in suburban areas close to the state’s interior, the Everglades has a significant impact on quality of life and real estate valuations. The Everglades buffers Florida properties from storm surge, provides 9 million residents with clean drinking water, and supports the state’s tourism, recreation, and real estate-based economy. Everglades restoration is also the key to preventing the discharge of polluted water from Lake Okeechobee that has resulted in toxic algae blooms for the last four of five years.

America’s Everglades provides drinking water to nine million Floridians, habitat for 78 threatened or endangered species, and includes 14 National Wildlife Refuges and four National Parks, including Everglades National Park – a World Heritage Site, an International Biosphere, and a Wetland of International Importance. The Everglades also supports a robust tourism-based economy, and helps mitigate climate change through carbon sequestration.

Since its founding in 1993, The Everglades Foundation has been devoted to restoring and protecting the precious ecosystem through science, advocacy, and education. On April 6 and 7, the Foundation will host virtual events designed to provide intriguing information about the one-of-a-kind ecosystem, and to engage participants in conversations about how to take an active role in restoring and protecting it.

Photographs from the Design Your Own Big One Competition by Mr Q 305

Judging is not easy… I was invited to participate in the judging of the “Design your own Big Oneâ„¢ Competition” at the Grand Opening Block Party of the newly enhanced Sgt. Peppers Subs in Palmetto Bay. The food was great but picking a winner was tough.

Sgt. Peppers Subs is known for great, delicious subs, sandwiches, salads etc. served in a café-style environment, they also offer wine, beer and free wi-fi to boot.

The panel consisted of four judges: The honorable Shelly Stanczyk, Mayor of the City of Palmetto Bay, Sef Gonzalez from the Burger Beast, Alex Peña, owner of Steve’s Pizza and myself.

Three sandwiches made the final elimination round: Havana Pork, Beef Asiago and Fresa Strawberry. All were excellent sandwiches. The Asiago Beef won the top honors although Sef and I both agreed that the Fresa Strawberry had tremendous potential (I would’ve never dreamed of putting strawberries and avocados in a sandwich format, adding goat cheese to the mix gave it that extra notch which was totally unexpected…outstanding!).

As part of the winning entry prize the Beef Asiago sub will be added to the Sgt. Peppers Subs menu and will remain in it for a year.

This party was the perfect way to spend a beautiful Miami afternoon in a great family friendly event which had entertainment for everyone.

ArtSoBay Event Night 2/18/12

ArtSoBay Event Night
Saturday, Feb. 18, 6:30 – 10pm
Deering Estate at Cutler
16701 SW 72 Ave
Palmetto Bay (Miami)
33157
www.deeringestate.org

Contemporary art exhibits, one-time only art performances and site-specific installations are certain to awaken one’s senses when ArtSoBay opens on Saturday, Feb.18 at the Deering Estate at Cutler. Uniquely alternative experiences are created for the viewer when sound, taste, smell and touch are integrated into the artists’ messages. The unconventional day and evening art event is a highlight of the annual SoBay Festival of the Arts, a two-week celebration (Feb. 14-26) of visual, literary, and performing art collaborations.

Participating artists from the Deering Estate are: Visual Arts – Lucas Blanco, Thomas Daniel, Bernadette Denoux, Lucinda Linderman, Aurora Molina and Christina Pettersson; Literary Arts – Deena Blazejack and C.M. Clark. Dominique Breard, LegalArt Program Director has curated the LegalArt portion with their artists including: Justin Broadbent, Pachi Giustinian, Jiae Hwang, Julia Blaukopf, Brookhart Jonquil, Manny Prieres, TM Sisters and Pioneer Winter. The exhibit runs through Saturday, March 10.

Artist Dinorah De Jesus Rodriguez, whose alternate cinema project is incorporated with the lush mango grove that lines the Deering Estate path, greets guests at ArtSoBay Events Night. The evening also brings together this community’s most notable artists, whose works are featured in the groundbreaking exhibit, Wedding Crashers. Artist Ralph Provisero, Special Projects Curator said, “ Weddings can be iconic images of momentary time. The preparation, the party and the aftermath are often based on grandiose images of fantasy or skewed reality. With the Deering Estate being such a popular wedding destination, these art installations, though curated for the spaces they occupy, are wedding crashers ¬–¬ uninvited witnesses that nonetheless embody a presence as fantastical as their surroundings.”

Wedding Crasher artists include: Rene Barge, Bhakti Baxter, Felecia Chizuko Carlisle, Robert Chambers, Clifton Childree, William Cordova, Jason Hedges, Michael Loveland, Cheryl Pope, Leyden Rodriguez-Casanova, Frances Trombly and Wendy Wischer.

The evening also features on-going performance art: Contact with Rene Barge and the transformation of sound with crowd participation, Lucinda Linderman Excess Extravagance, Jason Hedges Vertical Spits and C.M. Clark presenting a poetry reading. There is an informal reception with an opportunity to meet all of the artists and curators. ArtSoBay Event Night runs from 6:30pm to10pm and there is no admission charge.
