As part of its ongoing commitment to the community, Subaru of Pembroke Pines will host its annual Dog Appreciation “Pawty” and Pet Adoption Event on Sunday, Oct. 27, from 12-2 p.m. with special guest, Tour with Teddy. Guests are invited to bring their furry friends to celebrate Subaru Loves Pets® Month with music, food, giveaways and a pet costume contest. Pet retailer Pet Supplies Plus and groomer Scenthound will also be present.

The event is part of Subaru Loves Pets®, a national Subaru initiative that aims to support the lives of as many shelter animals as possible. For those who are yet to be pet parents, Subaru of Pembroke Pines invites guests to consider adopting a pet from the Humane Society of Broward County, who will be present with a selection of pets available for adoption. The Humane Society of Broward County will benefit from a $100 donation from Subaru of Pembroke Pines for each day that a pet is adopted throughout the month of October.

The community is invited to enjoy this free family-friendly event that features fun for all ages, including a “wrapped” Subaru vehicle that kids can color on and a photo booth with silly props. Dog trainers from the Humane Society of Broward County, doggie treats and other community partners will be present to join the fun. In addition to the exciting activities planned, Subaru of Pembroke Pines has been hosting a monthly Pet of the Month social media contest. All winners are invited to the event and will receive a golden retriever plush toy. These plush toys can also be purchased for a minimum donation of $10, with proceeds benefiting the animal-assisted therapy endowment at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, an initiative by the Craig Zinn Automotive Group. At the event, the Pet of the Year winner will be announced, with the grand prize recipient receiving a $100 gift card to use at the pet store of the winner’s choice. This monthly contest has encouraged participants to showcase its pet’s unique personalities, with the winning pet being recognized for its outstanding qualities and featured as a highlight of the celebration.

According to the ASPCA®, almost 6.5 million animals enter shelters nationwide each year. Subaru is committed to helping all animals — including those in shelters — stay safe and healthy. Through the Love Promise and Subaru Loves Pet initiative, participating Subaru retailers partner with a local animal organization in its community and host adoption events across the country to help local shelter pets find loving homes. Subaru and its retailers are proud to help make the world a better place for pets with over $60 million donated to national and local pet-focused organizations, supporting the adoption, rescue, transport and health of over 504,000 animals.

Craig Zinn Automotive Group and Subaru of Pembroke Pines proudly support the Humane Society of Broward County in its quest to help find loving homes for pets. The Humane Society of Broward County is committed to supporting the lives of animals by providing adoptions, community services and education. Subaru of Pembroke Pines has donated more than $81,700 since 2021 to the Humane Society of Broward County through the Subaru Share the Love® Event. American Heritage Schools [ahschool.com], the top-ranked PK3 through 12 college preparatory school in Florida, is proud to announce its annual “K-9 Cause: An Evening of Art” auction benefiting the Broward Sheriff’s Foundation’s Retired Canine Relief Fund, on Saturday, April 20.

Everyone loves dogs; however, police dogs, or K-9s, are a special breed. Instead of enjoying the pampered pet lifestyle, K-9s dedicate their entire lives to working daily to protect and serve citizens in our community along with their fearless handlers. They are considered law enforcement officers, whose duties include constant training, apprehending suspects, and searching for explosives, drugs, and missing persons.

When the K-9s retire, their law enforcement handlers graciously adopt them and continue to care for them, as these K-9s have become their friends for life. Recognizing that the medical and healthcare for these K-9s can get quite costly, the Broward Sheriff’s Foundation has established the Retired K-9 Healthcare Fund. This Fund pays for up to 50% of the wellness care costs for all retired K-9s from any local law enforcement agency in Broward County.

Inspired by a little boy’s passion for animals and art, American Heritage Schools is raising money to “fund this fund” by selling artistic renditions of these fine K-9s. Jackson Laurie, a sophomore at American Heritage Schools, and his parents Dr. Douglas Laurie and Nikki Laurie-Van Allen have partnered with the National Art Honor Society and the award-winning Fine Arts faculty at American Heritage to create artwork of these very K-9 being honored.

American Heritage Schools, Broward Campus, will be hosting a Silent Auction for these original works of art, as well as a limited supply of prints for sale at our K-9 Cause event. 100% of all funds raised from this event will benefit the Broward Sheriff Foundation’s Retired K-9 Relief Fund.

In preparation for the onset of warmer weather, participating YMCA of South Florida locations are hosting “Swim for Jenny Week,” five days of free swim lessons and water safety instruction to children and adults of all ages from Monday, March 20 to Friday, March 24. During the year, 11,000 children and adults are taught drowning prevention and water safety techniques at the YMCA of South Florida.

Named after Jenny, a one-of-a-kind child who was energetic, beautiful and blessed with a loving family but lost her life because she did not know how to swim, “Swim for Jenny Week” seeks to strengthen local communities, impacting the lives of thousands by teaching drowning prevention and water safety techniques.

Registration for “Swim for Jenny Week” is available by phone at 954-334-9622 or in person at any of the following participating YMCA locations:

• L.A. Lee YMCA/Mizell Community Center – 1409 Sistrunk Boulevard, Fort Lauderdale
• Greater Hollywood YMCA Family Center – 3161 Taft Street, Hollywood
• Hallandale Beach YMCA Family Center – 501 SE 1 Avenue, Hallandale Beach

• Pembroke Pines Aquatic & Program Center – 1361 NW 129 Avenue, Pembroke Pines
• Weston YMCA Family Center – 20201 Saddle Club Rd, Weston

Since the lack of proper attire can also be a hindrance to kids learning to swim, the Y will also be accepting swim suit donations through their annual Swimsuit Drive at all YMCA of South Florida locations, in an effort to provide additional support during “Swim for Jenny Week.”

The City of Pembroke Pines and The Frank C. Ortis Art Gallery are pleased to present On The Samara’s Wing: Ethnobotanical Negotiations of Cultural Space, an in-person exhibition centering artists who explore immigration, diaspora, transnational identity, race and belonging through dramatic allegories of landscape, botany and organic materials. From time immemorial, human survival has hinged upon our ability to recognize and navigate the botanical landscape. Cultures, known and unknown, antiquitous and contemporary, withstand the jagged contours of evolution by maintaining a cultivated awareness of plant-life. Plants provide nourishment, healing, shelter and in essence, through oxygen-life itself.

On The Samara’s Wing takes flight on Thursday, October 21st at 6 PM. The opening reception will feature an exclusive performance by Haitian singer and guitarist Inez Barlatier at 7 PM.

Complimentary refreshments and hors d’oeuvres will be served at the reception. Admittance to The Frank is free. No appointments or registration required. Mask-wearing at The Frank is strongly encouraged.

Sunday, 06/25/2020-08/08/2020, 11:00 am-05:00 pm

Cost:

This comprehensive solo exhibition is made possible through a CIP Grant awarded to Yochi Yakir-Avin by The Broward County Cultural Division. Additional support is provided by the exhibition host venue, The Frank C. Ortis Art Gallery in Pembroke Pines, Florida. Due to safety restrictions brought on by the Covid-19 pandemic, the bi-level solo show will be experienced through a 360 degree interactive tour accompanied by virtual programming. In the event that the Frank reopens to the public between June 25 and August 8, In Between will be accessible to the public in person as well. As complementary community offerings, a video tutorial workshop on Transfer techniques and a virtual musical performance will be offered online during the exhibition.
In Between is a retrospective presenting select works created by Yakir-Avin between 2015-2020. The exhibition reflects her technical education in Israel and Italy, and displays Yakir-Avin’s ability to communicate clearly through both figuration and abstraction. Her command of multiple media and techniques is demonstrated through oil paintings on canvas, mixed media works on paper and wood, and sculptural pieces that walk the line between art object and everyday furnishings.
Conveyed via a masterfully limited palette, her subjects are framed against swathes of monochromatic color and emphasize notions of mood, place and implied narrative. Within her intimate mixed media pieces on paper and wood, the artist draws creative inspiration from her past and allows her memories to weave together to drive her practice forward. Through a tangible sense of vulnerability embedded in each of her works, the artist aims to offer hope, comfort and peace to the viewer – resulting in a subtle message of optimism that is necessary at all times, particularly now.

Art on Immigration, Family Separation, and the Power of Women

Miami-based Brazilian artist Jônatas Chimen highlights the role of women on immigration and family preservation in his latest exhibit 5 Madonnas in Exile, (or The Refugee Cathedral of the Ascending Bull).

As a first-generation immigrant and a descendant of Sephardic exiles who suffered forced-conversions, persecution, and expulsion during the Spanish Inquisition, Jônatas explains that much of his family’s legacy only survived a 500-year Diaspora due to the bravery of a few women:

“They made sure the family did not crumble while in exile, by being relentless spiritual, cultural, and business leaders. They were addressed by the title of Dona. But because they were so selfless and virtuous, I call them Madonnas.”

The artist’s own history of exile and religious conflict play an important role in his discourse. Elements such as a cathedral and bull are borrowed straight from this narrative.

“The ever-reliable bull is willing to provide necessary strength at a very low cost, but in times of euphoria, upheaval, and famine, it is often sacrificed in the bull-fighting arena. Similarly, immigrants are appreciated at times of bountifulness and peace, but in moments of crisis they are sometimes singled out and sacrificed, often not only rhetorically.”

Within this fabric cathedral installation, one is confronted by a spiraling maze also made of textiles. This further emphasizes the disorienting experience of being in exile and living in a situation of limbo, as it is currently happening to children sent to immigration detention centers.

At the end of this maze there is an altar, where several screens show a performance in which Jônatas drifts on a raft through water channels and the open ocean. Jônatas is wearing a suit and a bow-tie, signifying composure in the face of the unknown. Sojourning through the waters brings to mind that most asylum-seeking immigrants arrive to his home state of Florida via the ocean.

Deep within this fabric sanctuary, one is reminded of what his five Madonnas were clearly aware of; that alone we are nothing but threads, but together we can be as strong as the very fabric of society.

The exhibit counts with the important participation of assistant artist Rachael Kfare and scholar Reina Barreto, PhD.

Opening Reception: September 12th at The Art Gallery of Broward College South Campus, from 6 – 9:00 p.m.

A total of 16 Bands will grace the Rockfest stage at this fan-favorite festival event.
This year’s spectacular lineup features three Rock and Roll Hall of Famers:
Lynyrd Skynyrd, Cheap Trick and Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, as well as Sebastian Bach, Dokken, Foghat, Lita Ford, The Outlaws, Little River Band, Steelheart, Jack Russell’s “Great White,” Quiet Riot, South Florida’s local hero’s “Mr. Nice Guy” and our very own Coral Springs local rockers “Stellar Revival. Two more bands will join the line up through a statewide “Battle of the Bands” search, sponsored by Reverbnation, Revolution Live and Extreme Action Park. Battle of the Bands finals is to be held at Revolution Live on September 9, 2017 and Xtreme Action Park on September 30, 2017.

C.B. Smith Park (Home to Rockfest 80’s) located in Pembroke Pines, Fla., is a 299-acre site and is one of Broward County Parks and Recreation’s most diverse parks, as well as one of its most popular. Along with a water park that includes water slides and a tube ride, the park offers a large RV campground, a tennis complex, a family golfing center and many other amenities.

About each band announced so far:

Lynyrd Skynyrd — Inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on March 13, 2006, Lynyrd Skynyrd features a catalog of more than 60 albums, over $30 million in album sales worldwide and with “Sweet Home Alabama” having been downloaded more than two million times as a ringtone, there’s no doubt Lynyrd Skynyrd has solidified its place in rock and roll history. The band, which originally started in Jacksonville, Fla., in 1964, has been through many changes over the years but Lynyrd Skynyrd is still going strong with original member Gary Rossington joined by Johnny Van Zant, Rickey Medlocke, Mark “Sparky” Matejka, Michael Cartellone, Johnny Colt, Peter Keys, Dale Krantz Rossington and Carol Chase.

Cheap Trick— Rocking sold out concerts since 1973, Cheap Trick is known in Japan as “The American Beatles.” With timeless hits such as “Surrender,” “I Want You To Want Me,” “Dream Police” and “The Flame,” Cheap Trick was inducted into Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2016. Known for their four decades of almost continuous touring, Cheap Trick has performed more than 5,000 times and just released their new album We’re All Alright! to rave reviews.

Joan Jett and the Blackhearts — Inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2015, Joan Jett, who has been dubbed The Queen of Rock and Roll and Godmother of Punk, shot to fame in 1975 as a founding member of the all-girl glam punk group, The Runaways. Jett picked up her first guitar at the age of 13 and went on to record 14 studio albums, release 42 singles to date and continues to tour every year to sold out audiences. Joan Jett and the Blackhearts continue to be one of the most sought after live bands in the industry today belting our anthems such as “I Love Rock ‘n Roll” and “I Hate Myself For Loving You.” A feminist Icon throughout her entire career, in 2010 “The Runaways” biopic was released gaining Jett a new generation of fans.

Sebastian Bach — Sebastian Bach has sold more than 20 million records both as the lead singer of Skid Row and as a solo artist. He is particularly known for the
hit singles “I Remember You,” “Youth Gone Wild,” and “18 & Life,” and the albums Skid Row and Slave To The Grind, which became the first ever hard rock album to debut at No. 1 on the Billboard Top 200. Bach continues to tour worldwide and has released his autobiography titled “18 And Life on Skid Row,” stirring up the 80’s era of rock and roll in true Sebastian Bach fashion. Bach also expanded his star power, gracing the Broadway stage with starring roles in “Jekyll & Hyde,” “Jesus Christ Superstar” and “The Rocky Horror Show.”

Dokken — American metal band, Dokken, sold more than 10 million albums churning out hits such as “Alone Again,” “In My Dreams” and “Burning Like a Flame.” Don Dokken, Jon Levin, “Wild” Mick Brown and Chris McCarvill are touring together and will make their Rockfest 80’s debut this November 4.

Foghat — British rock band Foghat achieved eight gold records, one platinum and one double platinum record and continue to wow audiences with familiar favorites such as “Slow Ride” and “Fool for the City.” Current members include: drummer Roger Earl, bassist Craig MacGregor, lead guitarist Bryan Bassett and vocalist and rhythm guitarist Charlie Huhn. Last summer, Foghat released a new album, Under the Influence, which was their 17th album and first record since 2010. The album features a new version of their biggest hit “Slow Ride.” With their non-stop touring and playing to sold out audiences nationwide, Foghat have released their next record – Foghat Live at the Belly Up.

Lita Ford — Singer, songwriter, author, producer and platinum-selling artist, Lita Ford, shot to fame as a teenager in the original all-girl punk rock group, The Runaways. Ford went on to have a wildly successful solo career with Top 10 singles such as “Kiss Me Deadly” and a duet with Ozzy Osbourne, “Close My Eyes Forever.” Lita was named “The First Lady of Rock Guitar” in 2017 by Guitar Player Magazine and continues to wow audiences around the world with her impressive lead guitar shredding skills.

The Outlaws – Formed in Tampa, Fla., The Outlaws are a southern rock /country band best known for their 1975 hit “There Goes Another Love Song” and extended guitar jam “Green Grass and High Tides” from their 1975 debut album, plus their 1980 cover of the Stan Jones classic “Ghost Riders in the Sky.” Still at the top of their game and with a non-stop touring schedule, The Outlaws continue playing to sold out audiences nationwide. In 2016, the band also released a 2-CD concert set entitled, Legacy Live.

Little River Band — With 16 studio albums, four live albums, five compilation records and 35 singles, Australian rockers Little River Band formed in 1975 and sold more than 30 million records. They scored hits with “Reminiscing” and “The Night Owls.” Today, Little River Band is still rockin’ more than 40 years later with guitarist Greg Hind, Chris Marion on keys, Ryan Ricks on drums, Wayne Nelson on bass and lead vocals and Rich Herring on lead guitar.

Steelheart — Originally known as Red Alert, Steelheart has been revving up audiences since 1990. Hits such as “I’ll Never Let You Go (Angel Eyes)” and “She’s Gone” solidified Steelheart’s place in rock history. Lead vocalist Miljenko Matijevic, lead guitarist Uros Raskovski, Rev Jones on bass and Mike Humbert on percussion currently make up the band. Steelhart is releasing a new album this summer set to include a few surprise guest appearances on the recording. It will be the band’s first new album since 2008.

Jack Russell’s “Great White” — Founding member of the American hard rock band Great White, Jack Russell started touring again as “Jack Russell’s Great White” in December 2011. The band originally formed in 1977 and achieved superstardom with rock anthems such as “Once Bitten Twice Shy” and “Rock Me.” Jack Russell’s “Great White” released their latest album He Saw It Comin’ in January with hits such as “Sign of the Times” and “She Moves Me.”

Quiet Riot — Originally founded in Los Angeles in 1973 by the late guitarist Randy Rhoads and bassist Kelly Garni, Quiet Riot is a glam metal band that has undergone several periods of reinvention. “Cum on Feel the Noize,” “Bang Your Head (Metal Health)” and their cover of “Mama Weer All Crazee Now” remain some of this iconic group’s most beloved hits. Current members include: Frankie Banali on drums, Chuck Wright on bass, Alex Grossi on guitar and “American Idol” finalist James Durbin on lead vocals. Quiet Riot is dropping a new album, Road Rage, later this year with new lyrics and Durbin on vocals.

“Mr. Nice Guy” — Drawing record breaking crowds at every show and having their own Royal Caribbean Cruise line spring cruise, Mr. Nice Guy continues to be South Florida’s No. 1 Classic Rock Band. The “Mr. Nice Guy Cruise” is three years in the running and comprised of South Florida’s premier musicians. Mr. Nice Guy joins the Rockfest 80’s line-up and kicks off the day on Sunday, November 5 with members: Tommy Hall – Guitar/ Keyboards/Vocals, Jeffrey James Harris – Lead Vocal/Guitar, Maria De Crescenzo – Lead Vocals, Johnny O- Lead Vocal/Sax/Flute/ Percussion, John Quinn – Keyboards, Richie Vega – Bass, Vocals, Dave Webster – Drums.

Stellar Revival — Influenced by Incubus and with individual members aspiring to the sounds of everything from blues and country to 90’s grunge, Stellar Revival quickly found success nationally but their roots remain true to where it all began in Coral Springs. Our very own “Coral Springs Rock Stars” signed with Capitol Records and played massive music festivals around Europe. Starting 2017 with a bang, Stellar Revival was invited to open for Bon Jovi in Los Angeles at the premier L.A. Arena “The Forum.” Closing this year, Stellar Revival joins the super star line up on Saturday, November 4 at Rockfest 80‘s with Rino Cerbone – Lead Vocal, guitarists Brian Spears and Steve Morgan, bassist Mike Lowther and Andrew Koussevitzky – Drums.

Who’s Fooling Who – An Exploration of the Deceptive – Curator Jill Slaughter

The title Who’s Fooling Who is twofold – featured artists either use materials in an unusual way, or create work which examines the unlooked at, visually provoking the viewer to engage. No More Tears, an organization for the support of domestic abuse survivors will be featured.

Who’s Fooling Who refers to domestic abuse in that it’s often the abuser that seems emotionally stable and charming, while the abused can seem erratic, and unsettled. Abusers don’t have to be concerned with their health and well-being, or that of their families as does the “victim,” and with that, Who’s Fooling Who?

History, poetry and tragedy collide when Roger Guenveur Smith tackles the thorny odyssey of Rodney King—deemed “the first reality TV star”— from the harsh initial glare of the national spotlight as the victim of police brutality to his involuntary martyrdom that ignited the L.A. riots to his lonely death at the bottom of a swimming pool. As with his previous triumphs at the Kirk Douglas Theatre, including The Watts Towers Project and Juan and John, Smith seamlessly fuses facts and friction, motion and emotion into a gripping narrative that poses impossible questions while illuminating his subject with grace and empathy.

Komen and an additional $2 for every Wacoal or b.tempt’d by Wacoal bra or shapewear piece purchased on the event day.

For more than a decade with its landmark Fit for the Cure® program, Wacoal has educated more than half a million women about the importance of bra fit, foundation and breast health. Women should be professionally fitted for a bra at least once a year to ensure their cup and width size has not changed as a result of weight gain or loss, pregnancy, or other changes in their body. Take 15 minutes to meet with a Wacoal fit expert and contribute to an important cause. Breast cancer accounts for 26 percent of all cancers among women. A monthly breast self-examination is an important way to detect abnormalities at an early stage.

During the special fit event, a special gift awaits customers making an $80 purchase of Wacoal or b.tempt’d merchandise, while supplies last.

Artists include Nestor Arenas, Randy Burman, Jacqueline Gopie, Donna Haynes, Philip Ross Munro, Lori Nozick, and Sara Stites.

The Homecoming Project enables successful members of the LGBT community to return to middle schools, high schools and colleges across the country to share their own coming out stories, and personal life lessons. Dialogues are sparked, and speakers offer inspiration to the next generation following in their footsteps.

The Gay-Straight Alliance club will welcome Davie native Tracy Wise, an accomplished advertising executive now living and working in New York City to speak at the charter school. Visual and/or literary work by the students will also be exhibited in Which Way Out.

Local top chefs will take a short break from their kitchens to fill boxes with food for the hungry at Feeding South Florida to kick off this year’s Great American Bake Sale along with Taste of the Nation Miami and Fort Lauderdale, which all three benefit Share Our Strength. In support of this great effort, several Food Trucks will participate as well by selling lunch and donating partial proceeds back to the organization, while volunteers can also enjoy complimentary coffee provided by Nespresso. The public is invited to play a part in the service day, which will also include a DJ from Mike Sipe Entertainment.

South Florida’s premier culinary benefits return to Aventura Mall on Sunday, May 6 (Great American Bake Sale), Broward County Convention Center on Thursday, May 17 (Taste of the Nation Fort Lauderdale) and then to the legendary Turnberry Isle Miami resort on Thursday, July 19 (Taste of the Nation Miami.) All ticket sales will be contributed to Share Our Strength, the nation’s leading nonprofit organization working to end childhood hunger in America.

During the community service day, chefs will tour Feeding South Florida’s Broward headquarters and will spend a couple hours assisting the distribution center’s staff and volunteers with sorting donated food items and checking for expiration dates, dents, damages and leaks.

Each year, Miami-Dade and Broward’s hottest executive chefs, pastry chefs and mixologists donate their time, talent and passion during Share Our Strength’s Great American Bake Sale and Taste of the Nation Miami with one goal in mind: to raise the critical funds needed to end childhood hunger. There are over 17 million kids in America with 637,000 of this total in Florida – that’s 1 in 4 children-who do not know when or where they’ll have their next meal. In South Florida, funds are distributed to a number of beneficiaries like Feeding South Florida, which is the state’s largest food bank. For more information and to purchase tickets for Taste of the Nation, call 1-877-26-TASTE or visit www.strengthflorida.org.

Whole Foods Market–Pembroke Pines Grand Opening

A friend of mine told me a few days ago that the Whole Foods in Pembroke Pines was finally going to open today. I looked online for details and decided to check it out. After all, free continental breakfast and giveaways are my thing. And the same friend told me that the store was opening with a strong beer selection, so I wanted to see that while it was still in untouched condition.

At around 8:30 am I arrived to a massive traffic jam in the entire strip mall’s parking lot. I considered leaving but ended up parking a quarter mile away from the store. As I approached the store with what seemed to be a pilgrimage to the Holy Land, I got my first glance of the atmosphere. The local high school marching band was playing, cheerleaders cheering, and the line of people waiting to get into the store when it opened at 9 am wrapped around the entire parking lot. Massive amounts of people.

I decided to get out my camera and (deservedly) played the journalist card. It was actually pretty easy as the crowd-control staff gave me zero issues for pushing my way up to the front near the speech-makers. At the same time, they were telling dozens of others to get at the end of the aforementioned line. Cameras are powerful, apparently.

I took a bunch of pictures, listened to a bunch of short speeches from store executives, and basically looked cool, LOL. Even Pembroke Pines Mayor Frank Ortis was there give a little speech about economic development for the city. They had a bread breaking ceremony to dedicate the store, after which the three huge loaves were ripped to shreds by the wolves from the line. Speaking of food, I never did find the continental breakfast, but I’m sure that’s my fault.

My media credentials got me into the store promptly. I took some pictures. I looked around. I bought the first beer that the store sold. My 40-year old self got carded! But by 9:05 am I was on my way out the door. I did not try for the gift bag since a ticket was required that I apparently didn’t earn by standing in that massive line.

Who would have thought that thousands of people would show up for a Grocery Store Grand Opening? If it was for the prize alone, I’d say that’s crazy. Anyway, Good Luck Whole Foods!

Total Wine and More–Not Just a Liquor Store

Pretty Poetic Title. Am I right?

Everyone in South Florida knows that Total Wine & More is a great place to shop for Beer, Spirits and Wine. I’d have preferred they called it Total Beer and More, but that’s just me. The variety of products, great prices, regular tastings and knowledgeable, friendly staff are just the beginning, too.

Total Wine offers regular educational opportunities for their customers as well. You know, the fun kind of education. Not geometry and grammar, though those are two of my interests. But I’ll save that for another time. Yes, Total Wine offers beer classes, wine tastings with the actual wine makers, whiskey classes with specialists in the business and everything in between. Got a Tequila fetish? This is your store!

For a nominal fee, usually between $15 and $25, consumers can attend one of these events. They are conveniently scheduled, regular events, too, and often they are happening at multiple locations simultaneously so you have your choice. I’ve personally been to a few of their classes. First, Whiskeys Around the World presented by a Senior Master of Whiskey and more recently one called Bourbon Essentials, in addition to a few beer events which I just assumed you knew. I learned a lot. They were very interesting, fun, nice to meet other people, enjoyable experiences. We were able to sample a variety of products, selected for quality and value, and even get some coupons to use afterward.

My wife and a friend just signed up for a Wine Class called Malbec and Other Sexy Wines of South America. And I heard the store manager just yesterday talking about Single Malt Scotch and Tequila classes coming up soon. With 9 local South Florida stores, you will surely have no problem finding something that interests you too. Pick a store and check out their calendar.

I recently asked Greg Tuttle, Total Wine’s Product Education Manager, based out of their Corporate office in Potomac, MD, a few questions. If you have your own questions, Greg is on Twitter, and he or his staff will be happy to get you some answers about their educational series. Plus he’s pretty cool. You might even bump into him one day. For real, I did. And don’t think I’m being a dick with my questions. I just wanted to play Devil’s Advocate and get the real scoop.

Total Wine's Greg Tuttle and Rob Hill

Me: Why go to the trouble of organizing educational classes for your customers? It seems like a lot of work for not a lot of money. Are you just trying to get a few more customers into your store?

Greg: We believe that knowledgeable customers are the best customers. At Total Wine & More, with our wide selection of wines, beers, and spirits, we have an opportunity to engage with customers in educational environments where we can share some of the breadth of our product portfolio. Customers can taste and learn in a relaxed atmosphere, and expose their palates to products and flavors they may never have otherwise tried.

Me: How do you make sure your presenters are ready for an enthusiastic and well-versed audience? What type of training do you make sure your employees or guest presenters have beforehand? How do you ensure they are qualified?

Greg: Indeed our audiences are enthusiastic, but their level of knowledge spans the spectrum from beginner to expert. Thus, we tailor the classes down the middle, so there is something for everybody including tasting a new product they’ve never tasted before, and/or learning something new about wine, beer or spirits that they did not previously know. Our area vice presidents and district managers select the class presenters for each store based on the presenters’ exhibiting core subject matter knowledge and presentation skills.

This is where I tried to zing him, LOL: How do you select the products that will be tasted? Do you just pick a handful of beers that are average and not selling well?

Greg: For beer classes, we first determine a set of class themes for the year, aiming to cover a wide spectrum of customers interests and previous beer knowledge, and then within each theme certain beer styles are selected to match that theme. Beer selections are challenging because availability of beer differs from one state to the next and from one market to another within the state. Typically, class presenters are given a list of beers for each beer style covered from which they can chose what to feature in their class based on availability in their store. They are also allowed to feature locally produced beers that may not be on the list.

Me: Is there anything else about Total Wine’s educational series that you think is very important or interesting?

Greg: Our product education series is constantly expanding and evolving. New classes are introduced each year, while prior favorites are updated and included in the roster. A person who attends each class offered, be it wine, beer, or spirits, will in a year’s time be exposed to an incredibly wide sampling of the varietals and styles available to him/her.

Me (trying for the Krabby Patty Formula): Are there any secret surprises we can look forward to in S. Florida in the coming months?

Greg: No “secrets” up our sleeves right now, but I suggest your readers follow our Twitter accounts (@TWMBeer and @Totalwine) and on Facebook for updates.

When Volunteers Will Sort, Package, Label, and Weigh Food for Distribution

During National Volunteer Week, April 10-16, Feeding South Floridaâ„¢ (formerly Daily Bread Food Bank) will emphasize the importance of and need for community volunteerism by hosting several corporate volunteer groups, and inviting the media to attend its April 16 volunteer-supported Sorting Saturday from 8:30 a.m.-12 p.m.

Established in 1974, National Volunteer Week recognizes the millions of volunteers who devote their time and efforts to making a difference in the lives of others. During this week, Feeding South Florida honors the thousands of volunteers who help the organization fight hunger and feed hope.

From April 10-16, corporate volunteer groups including Starbucks, Macy’s, Bank of America and YUM Brands will donate their time at Feeding South Florida.

At Feeding South Florida’s April 16 Sorting Saturday, approximately one hundred volunteers will show their support for the organization and National Volunteer Week by sorting, packaging, labeling and weighing food at the organization’s headquarters/warehouse in Pembroke Park. The food will then be distributed to Feeding South Florida’s network of more than 800 other not-for-profitorganizations.

Every year, Feeding South Florida, the largest hunger-relief organization in the state of Florida, provides food assistance to help the 920,000 people struggling with food insecurity in our community. During thepast fiscal year, more than 12,000 people volunteered over 40,000 hours at the organization. In addition to helping Feeding South Florida save time and labor costs, volunteerism helps raise awareness of hunger in the region and promotes community involvement in solving the problem.

Many of the food pantries and soup kitchens served by Feeding South Florida report that they rely entirely on volunteers and have no paid staff. “Volunteer support is invaluable to us at Feeding South Florida,” said Judith Gatti, executive director of Feeding South Florida. “Volunteers help keep our administrative costs low, and as a result, 98 cents of every dollar donated to us goes directly toward feeding the hungry. Without the help of volunteers, we could not be so efficient in distributing food to the community.”

The food insecurity rate for South Florida averages 16 percent, and the average cost of a meal is $2.73, according to Feeding America’s new Map the Meal Gap research.
