First Free and Publicly Accessible Electric Car Fast-Charging Station in South Florida Opens 2/4/14

First Free and Publicly Accessible Electric Car Fast-Charging Station in South Florida Opens
Tuesday, February 4, 5 p.m.
Pinecrest Gardens
11000 Red Road.

The first free and publicly accessible electric car fast-charging station in South Florida has been installed in the Pinecrest Gardens’ parking area. The station can charge an electric car in a fraction of the time it takes to charge with a regular charging station. For example, a Nissan LEAF can be charged from zero to 80 percent in less than 30 minutes. Other vehicles may take more or less time to achieve a similar charge.

Mayor Cindy Lerner and Village Manager Yocelyn Galiano Gomez will drive one of the Village’s Nissan LEAFs to Pinecrest Gardens for the first official use of the fast-charging station.
The fast-charging station is located in the northeast area of the parking lot. Pinecrest Gardens is located at 11000 Red Road.

“We have a significant focus on sustainability, improving access to energy efficiency and renewable energy,” said Mayor Lerner, who added that her next car will be an electric car.

Pinecrest Gardens attracts over 150,000 visitors each year and was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in October 2011, making it historically significant on a local, state and national platform.

“Because of its popularity and the Village’s commitment to conservation and sustainability, Pinecrest Gardens is the ideal location for an electric car fast-charging station,” said Galiano. “One can visit the Gardens, take a class in the community center or go to the library while charging the car.”

The fast charger is capable of charging at 44kW, compared to regular charging which runs at approximately 6kW. The fast-charger can be used by drivers of Nissan, Mitsubishi and Tesla electric cars. Tesla electric car owners need an adapter in order to charge.

Pinecrest Gardens is a premier venue for the arts, education and environmental conservation and preservation. On any given day one can catch an arts performance, tour the 14 acres of native forested wetland, tropical hardwood hammock and native cypress slough hammock or take a class in horticulture, archeology and botany.

Do you know why we eat yellow cheese? Find out in The Mice War, David Chesky’s absurdist opera for kids, presented by Orchestra Miami, in collaboration with the Florida Grand Opera.

The Mice War is a little story about the industrious Blue Mice that live in the North
and the passive Red Mice that live on an Island way in the south. The Blue Mice need to make more money so they decide they need to have a war. But what’s the reason for the war? The Blue Mice eat pink cheese and the Red Mice eat yellow cheese. What would happen if the Red Mice came and made the Blue Mice eat yellow Cheese?

The Mice War is an Opera for kids that teaches about the absurdity of war
and acceptance of cultural diversity while introducing them to classical music.
The performance features three Young Artists from the Florida Grand Opera accompanied by eight professional musicians form Orchestra Miami, conducted by Brian Onderdonk and directed by A. Scott Parry. This delightful program will last approximately 50 minutes and is perfect for children ages 3 and up.

The performance will be on Sunday, February 9, 2014 at 4:00 PM at Pinecrest Gardens’ Banyan Bowl, located at 11000 SW 57 Avenue, Pinecrest, FL 33156. Tickets are $10 for Adults and $5 for children. Children 2 and younger admitted free of charge with lap seating only. Seating is by general admission and there is ample free, on-site parking. Pinecrest Gardens South Motors Fine Arts Festival 1/11/14-1/12/14

2014 Winning Show Poster by Diana SierraJanuary 11 and 12, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Miami, FL 33156

Pinecrest Gardens will be the stage for the South Motors Fine Arts Festival where 65 artists will exhibit their works among 14 acres of native forested wetland, tropical hardwood hammock and native cypress slough hammock.

Each artist was carefully selected to show at South Florida’s premier juried fine arts festival from a pool of close to 100 painting, mixed-media, jewelry, sculpture, photography and wearable artists.

Judging will take place Saturday, Jan. 11 in the morning in the above categories plus best in show.

World-renowned Cuban artist Humberto Benitez will be among the artists to display his work in the festival. His Cuban-themed art is a feast of passion, sensuality and indulgence brought to life by the colors of the tropics. Silhouettes, musical instruments and landscapes of Cuba seemingly move on the canvas.

“I let the canvas detect the movement,” said Benitez, who never sketches before painting and has created works as large 13 feet tall and 14 feet wide.

Other exhibitors are coming from as far as California and the mid-west.

Joan Drizin is traveling from Indiana to show at the Fine Arts Festival. She uses rusted steel, unpolished glass, rough rock and other recycled materials to create geometric outdoor art. Each sculpture is created by welding, cutting and bending iron which translates into a one-of-a-kind whimsical piece with an edge.

Homegrown and up-and-coming artist Phil Fung, whose work has been featured by President Barack Obama and Vogue Magazine, will also be featured in the arts fair. His art spotlights world leaders, comic book characters and landscapes with colorful mastery and a style that is unmistakably Phil Fung.

The best works by artists and artisans from the US and abroad will be on display and for sale along with delicious food, live music, and a Little Sprout Zone in Pinecrest’s expansive botanical gardens.

Admission is free and there will be overflow parking at Palmetto Senior High, Palmetto Middle School and Pinecrest Elementary with free shuttle service to Pinecrest Gardens.

The Pinecrest Farmers Market 12/22/13

Buying local food promotes environmental sustainability. The average distance food travels is 1,500 miles, increasing dependence on petroleum and increasing greenhouse emissions that contribute to global warming. There is little to no packaging and eating local produce is more nutritious because it is sold soon after it’s picked.

To add to Pinecrest’s Farmers Market’s environment-friendly setting under a canopy of verdant trees that provide the perfect shade and backdrop for a relaxed weekend morning, South Florida’s first public electric car fast-charging station will be installed in the Pinecrest Gardens parking lot in about a month.

Buying produce from the Pinecrest Farmers Market supports local farmers who grow organic and local fruits and vegetables in Homestead, the Redlands, Fort Pierce and Clewiston.

By visiting the farmers market one develops a relationship with the farmers, helping families gain a better understanding of the environment, weather, seasons and science of agriculture. All these lessons are passed on to the next generation, who will then be the stewards of the environment.

Spending money on locally grown food increases the value of the land to the farmer, makes development less likely and conserves open green spaces.

Vendors in Pinecrest’s Farmers Market include: certified Organic Bee Haven Farm produce, Keez Beez locally harvested honey and Rochelois organic certified jams from the Redlands and Homestead.

The Farmers Market has something for everyone: Babe Froman Fine Sausages sells gourmet sausages and meat made with gluten-free, hormone and antibiotic free meats.

Forno Italiano Pizza uses only Australian Pine in its wood-burning oven (Australian Pine is an invasive species that displaces native beach plant communities that provide critical wildlife habitats for threatened or endangered plant and animal species).

And Living Colors Nursery is the first in the State of Florida to enroll in the Best Management Program, which is a voluntary program that growers can join to affirm they are using practices to reduce exposure to the environment of fertilizers and chemicals.

There are a total of 63 vendors that have signed up with the Green Market Co-op, which runs the market.

Aside from holding one of the most environmentally responsible farmers markets in South Florida, the Village of Pinecrest champions green initiatives that include: a Strategic Green Action Plan, Sustainable Building Regulations, a Carbon Off-set Program, Florida Green City Certification, LEED Trained Staff and is a Tree City USA for sixth consecutive year.

‘Low’ Art? Well, Yes and No …
New Art Show Brings Fine Art to Young Children’s Eye Level

Miami, Fla.—“More than Meets the Eye,” opening Friday, April 19, 2013, from 7 to 10 p.m., at Prints Giclée Shop, 8747 SW 134th Street, presents a fun new twist on art shows—no piece of artwork will be hung or exhibited any higher than three feet off the ground, thus “lowering” the art to young children’s eye level.

“The artwork won’t be ‘childish’—it will be PG-13—but it will be displayed so children as young as 3 to 5 years old can easily see it,” said show creator, co-curator and Miami artist Christine Lyall. She added that children of all ages are welcome to attend and admission is free. Also curating are Miami artists Aida Tejada and Gerardo Gonzalez-Quevedo, who owns and operates Prints Giclée Shop.

Ms. Lyall said she thought of the show’s concept when she noticed a young boy at an art show straining to see a piece of her work hanging on a wall. The boy’s father could see the piece just fine. The boy could not.

“I thought, ‘What if an entire professional art show were designed specifically for children?’ It seems so simple, and yet, I’ve never seen it done before,” said Ms. Lyall. “Children have a natural appreciation for and curiosity about art, and they often see things in art that adults, who tend to be more critical, don’t see. And yet, most art shows automatically exclude children as viewers because everything, unless it’s big, is too high for them to see.”

With governments cutting back on arts funding and school districts slashing their arts education budgets, “it’s increasingly important to find other ways to cultivate children’s appreciation for art,” said Ms. Lyall. “We hope this art-show concept helps.”

More than a dozen South Florida artists representing a diversity of styles and media (so children can see the many ways in which art can be rendered) are participating in “More than Meets the Eye,” including:

Aduni Abu Bakar—Sumi Ink Painting Marilyn Lemay—Watercolor

KCC Productions presents “Jazz at Pinecrest Gardens,” featuring jazz vocalist sensation, MARIA RIVAS, and her fabulous Quintet, performing her “Tribute to the Americas”, Saturday, January 26, 2013 at 8 PM (gates open 6:30 PM) in the Banyan Bowl, 11000 Southwest 57th Avenue, in Pinecrest, Florida.  At the Concert, Maria will perform an unusual blend of lively and entertaining music from throughout North and South America, presented in her own unique style and incorporating the matchless and romantic sound of violin. Guests can arrive early and enjoy the truly beautiful and graceful natural surroundings at Pinecrest Gardens.  The Concert is outdoors and the audience can enjoy light fare at the Gardens Gallery and Courtyard. Tickets are $20-25 at http://www.pinecrest-fl.gov/index.aspx?page=440
Maria Rivas recently relocated to South Florida from her native Venezuela, where she is that country’s best-renowned contemporary female vocalist, while being well-known and appreciated throughout Latin America and internationally. She has released 11 CDs containing an exceedingly diverse and entertaining repertoire, and her CDs are featured on iTunes and Amazon.

Maria’s hit single “Manduco” took the number one position on the Venezuelan charts and stayed there for over 3 months, and in the top 10 for more than 3 years.  Ms. Rivas has won numerous awards in Venezuela and internationally for her highly original blend of music, as well as her strong pro-environment and humanitarian stance.

Ms. Rivas considers the appearance of her Band at this Special Birthday Concert to be a wonderful birthday gift to herself and to the audience, as the Band will include a mixture of incredible talents from the 3 Americas.  Performing alongside Maria will be:  The incomparable Jamie Ousley from Tennessee on acoustic bass, with his gift for understanding the Latin-American coda inside its tropical rhythms and swaying movements, always performed with his characteristic elegance.

On drums, Rodolfo Zuniga, a highly talented Central-American drummer from Costa Rica, who like Jamie Ousley, is a music professor at Florida International University.  Mr. Zuniga has toured as a member of the prestigious Betty Carter Jazz Ahead Group and has performed with such artists as Sammy Figueroa, and Arturo Sandoval.

On percussion will be the hyper-talented Edwin Bonilla, a versatile musician from Puerto Rico, who is one of his genre’s best percussionists, songwriters and producers in the world, being invited to perform by artists like Gloria Estefan, Ricky Martin, Juan Luis Guerra, Celia Cruz and many more.

On piano and keyboards, nominated for a Latin Grammy in 2011, will be Alejandro Campos, a musician, songwriter, and composer from Venezuela who performed on one of the most important Venezuelan records of Maria Rivas called “Mapale”, and who has produced music for Univision, Telemundo, America TeVe, and others.  Among other recognitions, Campos won an ASCAP Award for the song “That’s Life”, performed by Olga Tanon, a musician with a 28 year musical career.

And finally, as a very special guest, Maria Rivas will present the virtuoso violin soloist Jhonny Mendoza, also from Venezuela, where he is a founding member and director of Cuerdas Andinas, a famous band in Venezuela, for which Mendoza has produced the group’s three albums containing the some of the most important music from the Andes mountain region.  For his sensitivity and talent, Jhonny Mendoza is considered one of most brilliant violinists in Venezuela.

The repertoire which Maria Rivas will be performing will provide spectacular entertainment for the audience.  With Maria’s highly melodious voice and the magical sound of violin, she will begin our musical journey with the Argentinean energy of Astor Piazzolla and his fabulous Tangos, and also the classic Latin ballad, “Alfonsina y el Mar”, then we will fly to the multi-colored expressions from Brazil including Maria’s distinctive renditions in Portuguese of “O Bebado e a Equilibrista” and “Mais que Nada”, then moving ahead to experience Maria’s memorable sound from her native Venezuela featuring her elegant Latin Jazz ensemble and the irresistible power of her Caribbean rhythms and beats, then to Mexico with Maria’s unparalleled and highly original version of Besame Mucho, and then to Maria’s singular interpretations of classic American jazz and pop tunes from the Great American Songbook, alongside her original music which Maria composed herself.  Maria will link together these seemingly diverse musical genres, while electrifying participants with her melodious voice and dynamic presentation.

Burgerliscious – The Second Course

by Ari Kane (@Aricurian) & Daniella Veras (@_DaniMiami)

Burgerlicious, living up to its catchy name, was truly defuckinlicious. This scrumptious soiree was held outdoors at the Ponce Circle Park in Coral Gables.  The beautiful balmy winter night was ideal for this epicurean grilling forgy (food orgy).  The crisp, cool weather gave South Floridians a chance to don their finest skiwear while New Yorkers rocked their “You Call This Cold?” t-shirts.  This venue, unlike past burger shindigs, did not leave the attendees smelling like the Eau de Ronald McDonald.  Over 20 competing restaurants, Sam Adams Beer, Naked Grape Wine and Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream were being served to the beat of cover band, Mad World. The VIP bar was stocked with delectable Seasons 52 mini desserts (heavenly pecan pies) and limitless Jack Daniels Tennessee Whisky and Tennessee Honey.

The “Best in Bun” was awarded to Shula’s 347 Grill for its caramelized onions, double gruyere cheese, garlic mayo and crushed garlic croutons burger while the “People’s Choice Award” went to The Dome for its barbecued infused cheeseburgers served with white cheddar, arugula, tomatoes, grilled onions and spicy mayo.

While those were solid offerings, the top two burgers that we devoured were hand-crafted by Pincho Factory and Seasons 52.  Pincho had a brisket patty that was soaked in brown sugar IPA beer with Havarti cheese and onions.  This culinary concoction was an utter delight and whose memory still induces a mouth-watering Pavlovian reaction.  Season’s 52 chose a healthier route to reflect its restaurant’s message and served up a turkey burger with crispy onions, spicy mayo and chili served on a decadent butter toasted make-you-challahhh roll.  Hands down, the best turkey burger we’ve ever had.

Honorable mentions include Rok Burger for its juicy Kobe burger with brie, BBQ bourbon bacon jam, on a homemade bun;  The Bar’s superb lager braised short rib, crispy onions, apple slaw and finger-lickin’ Jack Daniels sauce; and CRAVE Restaurant‘s savory pork and beef sliders.

The event was a deliciously fun, filling and reasonably priced ($50) foodie treat that will definitely have us returning for next year’s third course.

Orchestra Miami to present the Florida premiere of Kurt Vonnegut’s
“An American Soldier’s Tale”
In celebration of iconic American author Kurt Vonnegut’s 90th birthday, Orchestra Miami will present the Florida premiere of “An American Soldier’s Tale”, with music by Igor Stravinsky and new libretto by Kurt Vonnegut. Vonnegut’s gripping libretto replaces the traditional story by
C. F. Ramuz with the true story of private Eddie D. Slovick, who in 1945 became the only U.S. soldier to be executed for desertion since the Civil War.

Commissioned in 1993 by New York Philomusica, this edgy and provocative piece was not heard again until 2006, after a legal fight with the Stravinsky estate. Rarely performed since the 2006 New York revival, Orchestra Miami has obtained exclusive rights from the Vonnegut Estate to perform this important work on the occasion of what would have been Mr. Vonnegut’s 90th birthday.

Seven musicians from Orchestra Miami will perform the original Stravinsky score, conducted by Elaine Rinaldi. Directed by renowned Miamian Michael Yawney, the play will feature Ivan Lopez, Kristoff Skalet, Francesca Toledo and Matthew Glass.

The performances will be on Saturday, November 10 at 8:00 at PAX (Performing Arts Exchange), located at 337 SW 8th Street, Miami, FL 33130 and Sunday, November 11 at 7:00 PM at the Pinecrest Gardens’ Banyan Bowl, located at 11100 SW 57 Avenue, Pinecrest, FL 33156. Tickets to the PAX performance are $25 and tickets to the performance at Pinecrest Gardens are $25 and $30. Tickets can be purchased online at www.orchestramiami.org or by calling 800-838-3006. $10 student rush tickets will be available at the door for students with valid ID.

The  South Florida Jazz Orchestra is a modern Big Band comprising some of the best jazz musicians, studio musicians, and Jazz educators in the southeastern part of the United States. Their eclectic repertoire includes many original compositions by band members, as well as classic charts from such greats as Thad Jones, Charles Mingus, John Clayton, Maria Schneider, Jim McNeely, John Fedchock, and many more, all influenced by their diverse backgrounds and experiences in the South Florida music community. In June of 2006 renowned bassist and composer, Chuck Bergeron gathered a select group of top-notch Miami-based musicians and formed the first professional jazz rehearsal big band in the Greater Miami/South Florida area. On the evening of October 4th this sixteen-piece big band took the stage at the Arturo Sandoval Jazz Club, making their first professional debut as the new South Florida Jazz Orchestra. In a town known more for its salsa music than jazz, this performance marked a bold attempt to fill a long existing void in the local jazz scene. The establishment of a professional orchestra playing traditional big band music in this community is in many ways an historic musical event.

Lisanne Lyons teaches Studio Music and Jazz at the University of Miami’s Frost School of Music. She has produced two solo CD’s and two CD’s as lead soprano in the DC-based Uptown Vocal Jazz Quartet, with whom she performed at major jazz festivals across the country and abroad. She also performs with “Mad Romance”, a four-voice a capella group. Lisanne is the recipient of several DownBeat awards as a jazz vocal soloist, jazz vocal choir director, and most recently as a jazz arranger. She is in demand as a performer, arranger, adjudicator and clinician. Lisanne has headlined at the Ottawa, Detroit, and Clearwater Jazz Festivals, and La Nuit du Jazz (France). She was the first to perform live the Nelson Riddle arrangements of the George Gershwin Songbook that he wrote for Ella Fitzgerald, who only recorded them. She is currently working on a new show, a tribute to the great vocalists Rosemary Clooney, Peggy Lee, Anita O’Day, Ella Fitzgerald, and others.

Presenter: Larry Perez

Snake-eating alligators and alligator-eating snakes might seem like a science fiction story-line, but those battles are playing out in Everglades National Park, where the invasion of non-native pythons threatens to upend a rich and diverse ecosystem that includes the largest tract of wilderness east of the Rockies. Larry Perez skillfully explores this astonishing assault — the repercussions already tallied and those lying in wait — in a book that reads almost like fiction but which, sadly, is only too factual.

Larry Perez, a lifelong resident of Miami, is a graduate of Florida International University. He has been an interpreter and park ranger for Miami-Dade County Parks, and the National Park Service while achieving numerous professional awards. Larry is both a writer and producer, authoring Words on the Wilderness: A History of Place Names in South Florida National Parks, and Journal of Florida’s Watchable Wildlife: Reptiles and Amphibians.

Pinecrest Gardens Presents Debbie Orta And The Songs Of Billie Holiday 4/28/12

Pinecrest Gardens Presents Debbie Orta And The Songs Of Billie Holiday
Produced by KCC Productions
Friday, April 28, show starts at 8 PM
Pinecrest Gardens
11000 SW 57th Avenue
Pinecrest.

For more- information or to purchase tickets, contact Pinecrest Gardens at 877-496-8499, or visit online at www.pinecrest-fl.gov. For information on Debbie Orta, contact KCC Productions at 305-332-2623.

Debbie Orta will bring her voice and scholarship to Pinecrest Gardens, surveying the songs of the great Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday. Born in New York, Debbie performed American music until moving to Miami, where her Spanish roots drew her to the Latin sounds of the city where she performed for several years with a salsa band called “Clouds”. She was later offered a spot as lead female vocalist with an American show band at Bally’s Casino in Atlantic City, New Jersey. It was there that she later auditioned for the main showroom at the Sands, featuring Jose Luis Rodriguez (“El Puma”). She was hired on the spot as a backup singer on his world tour, also playing flute parts in the show for several years. During this time she performed as singer/dancer with another Latin heartthrob, Chayanne. Back home to raise her two children, Debbie has returned to her jazz roots, enriched by years of travel in the U.S., South America, Mexico, Canada, Australia and Europe. She has shared the stage with notable jazz musicians such as Mike Orta, Othello Molineaux, Turk Mauro, Jim Gasior, Brian Murphy, Carlos Averhoff, and Silvano Monasterios.

Now based in South Florida, Debbie Orta is accompanied by an outstanding quartet of esteemed jazz musicians. Since its inception, “The Debbie Orta Jazz Quintet” has performed at Jazz Festivals and clubs including the SunTrust Sunday Jazz Brunch Series, Hollywood Beach Concert Series, Arturo Sandoval’s Jazz Club, The Seminole Hard Rock Casino, Jazziz, The Van Dyke Café in South Beach, and is a regular performer at the world famous Setai Jazz Brunch on South Beach, among others. She is a featured performer in the prestigious Sunshine Jazz Organization of Miami. Debbie was the only South Florida jazz artist invited to perform at South Florida’s premier music festival, SunFest 2009, opening the Sunday Jazz Brunch for jazz fusion group, “Spyro Gyra”.

Debbie has created a seminar, entitled, “Jazz Gals”, originally presented at at Nova Southeastern University and subsequently expanded into a show with Wendy Pedersen at Sunrise Civic Center; it is a retrospective of the great female jazz vocalists of the 20th Century and today.

Debbie and her band perform a terrific jazz repertoire from the Great American Songbook, as well as Brazilian and Latin jazz arrangements, and jazz/funk feels flexing her voice over several octaves. Debbie’s swinging jazz and smoky ballads are always intriguing, whether classic or contemporary, sad or joyful.

Total Wine and More–Not Just a Liquor Store

Pretty Poetic Title. Am I right?

Everyone in South Florida knows that Total Wine & More is a great place to shop for Beer, Spirits and Wine. I’d have preferred they called it Total Beer and More, but that’s just me. The variety of products, great prices, regular tastings and knowledgeable, friendly staff are just the beginning, too.

Total Wine offers regular educational opportunities for their customers as well. You know, the fun kind of education. Not geometry and grammar, though those are two of my interests. But I’ll save that for another time. Yes, Total Wine offers beer classes, wine tastings with the actual wine makers, whiskey classes with specialists in the business and everything in between. Got a Tequila fetish? This is your store!

For a nominal fee, usually between $15 and $25, consumers can attend one of these events. They are conveniently scheduled, regular events, too, and often they are happening at multiple locations simultaneously so you have your choice. I’ve personally been to a few of their classes. First, Whiskeys Around the World presented by a Senior Master of Whiskey and more recently one called Bourbon Essentials, in addition to a few beer events which I just assumed you knew. I learned a lot. They were very interesting, fun, nice to meet other people, enjoyable experiences. We were able to sample a variety of products, selected for quality and value, and even get some coupons to use afterward.

My wife and a friend just signed up for a Wine Class called Malbec and Other Sexy Wines of South America. And I heard the store manager just yesterday talking about Single Malt Scotch and Tequila classes coming up soon. With 9 local South Florida stores, you will surely have no problem finding something that interests you too. Pick a store and check out their calendar.

I recently asked Greg Tuttle, Total Wine’s Product Education Manager, based out of their Corporate office in Potomac, MD, a few questions. If you have your own questions, Greg is on Twitter, and he or his staff will be happy to get you some answers about their educational series. Plus he’s pretty cool. You might even bump into him one day. For real, I did. And don’t think I’m being a dick with my questions. I just wanted to play Devil’s Advocate and get the real scoop.

Total Wine's Greg Tuttle and Rob Hill

Me: Why go to the trouble of organizing educational classes for your customers? It seems like a lot of work for not a lot of money. Are you just trying to get a few more customers into your store?

Greg: We believe that knowledgeable customers are the best customers. At Total Wine & More, with our wide selection of wines, beers, and spirits, we have an opportunity to engage with customers in educational environments where we can share some of the breadth of our product portfolio. Customers can taste and learn in a relaxed atmosphere, and expose their palates to products and flavors they may never have otherwise tried.

Me: How do you make sure your presenters are ready for an enthusiastic and well-versed audience? What type of training do you make sure your employees or guest presenters have beforehand? How do you ensure they are qualified?

Greg: Indeed our audiences are enthusiastic, but their level of knowledge spans the spectrum from beginner to expert. Thus, we tailor the classes down the middle, so there is something for everybody including tasting a new product they’ve never tasted before, and/or learning something new about wine, beer or spirits that they did not previously know. Our area vice presidents and district managers select the class presenters for each store based on the presenters’ exhibiting core subject matter knowledge and presentation skills.

This is where I tried to zing him, LOL: How do you select the products that will be tasted? Do you just pick a handful of beers that are average and not selling well?

Greg: For beer classes, we first determine a set of class themes for the year, aiming to cover a wide spectrum of customers interests and previous beer knowledge, and then within each theme certain beer styles are selected to match that theme. Beer selections are challenging because availability of beer differs from one state to the next and from one market to another within the state. Typically, class presenters are given a list of beers for each beer style covered from which they can chose what to feature in their class based on availability in their store. They are also allowed to feature locally produced beers that may not be on the list.

Me: Is there anything else about Total Wine’s educational series that you think is very important or interesting?

Greg: Our product education series is constantly expanding and evolving. New classes are introduced each year, while prior favorites are updated and included in the roster. A person who attends each class offered, be it wine, beer, or spirits, will in a year’s time be exposed to an incredibly wide sampling of the varietals and styles available to him/her.

Me (trying for the Krabby Patty Formula): Are there any secret surprises we can look forward to in S. Florida in the coming months?

Greg: No “secrets” up our sleeves right now, but I suggest your readers follow our Twitter accounts (@TWMBeer and @Totalwine) and on Facebook for updates.

Pinecrest Gardens and KCC Productions present Tito Puente Jr and his Latin Jazz Ensemble 3/17/12

Pinecrest Gardens and KCC Productions present Tito Puente Jr and his Latin Jazz Ensemble

Pinecrest Gardens Banyan Bowl
Red Road and SW 111th Street
Pinecrest

Tickets are $20
For more information call 305-669-6990 or visit pinecrest-fl.gov.

The comparison is inevitable. How could it be otherwise? Tito Puente Jr. carries his father with him – imprinted on his physical being and locked in his soul. It’s in his looks, his joy, and his music.

Tito, Jr. is on a passionate mission. The younger Puente is determined to nurture the musical legacy left by his father. He refuses to let his father become a distant memory. “He was just too vibrant, too exciting. There was magic in the music my father made. It made people happy all over the world.”

He has found enthusiastic audiences who echo his passion. Crowds lured to a venue by the father are returning to see the son — and to once again participate in the high voltage celebration that takes place on stage.

His 2004 album, “In My Father’s Shoes” featured the classic Puente titles and was spun into a BET Jazz television special of the same name.

He was seen in a tribute to his father’s music on NBC’s two hour special–“The Apollo at 70: A Hot Night in Harlem.” He has also appeared on the ABC soap opera hit “One Life to Live” in performance with his big band.

Symphony appearances include Dallas, San Antonio, Colorado, South Bend, and upcoming performances with the Palm Desert Symphony and the National Symphony Orchestra conducted by Marvin Hamlisch.

Tito, Jr.’s new CD release, “Got Mambo?” is a mixture of the old and the new as he takes a musical departure into some powerful new music he can truly call his own. Guest artists Bobby Cruz and Hansel & Raul help make this a coming of age project for Puente, Jr. and the album is receiving heavy praise from Tropical and Latin Jazz critics alike.

Community Invited to ‘Walk Like MADD’ in an Effort to Prevent Drunk Driving and Save Lives

Sponsored by Kendall Toyota and Lexus of Kendall, MADD’s second-annual festival and mini walk fundraiser for the Miami-Dade MADD affiliate will put a bigger spotlight on this critical cause

According to national statistics, 10,839 people were killed in 2010 in drunk-driving crashes…that’s one life lost every 50 minutes. In an effort to save lives and honor those who have been killed or injured, the MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) affiliate of Miami-Dade County is inviting the community to partake in its second annual signature fundraiser, Walk Like MADD, a festival and mini walk for friends and families. Supported by presenting sponsors Lexus of Kendall and Kendall Toyota, the special event takes place Saturday, February 11, from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM, at Evelyn Greer Park in the Village of Pinecrest.

“This community-wide initiative pays tribute to victims and survivors of drunk driving and educates the public about preventing future tragedies,” said Janet Mondshein, Executive Director of the MADD Miami-Dade Affiliate and event co-chair. “We want to generate more awareness about this violent crime and work collectively to stop it.”

The exciting fundraiser will welcome the attendance of local leaders, including Pinecrest Mayor Cindy Lerner and Police Chief John Hohensee, law enforcement officers and members of the community. A tug-of-war between local police officers and firefighters will be conducted as well as jaws-of-life and police dog demonstrations. Walk Like MADD will also have music, games and rides for children and teens, a variety of vendors focused on Valentine’s Day and a selection of delectable foods. Participants, encouraged to register in advance, will walk the third of a mile track at Evelyn Greer Park in support of MADD’s mission and in honor and memory of loved ones.

MADD is a not-for-profit, grass roots organization that aids victims, and families of victims, of drunk driving and increases public awareness about this violent crime. MADD serves as a beacon in communities nationwide, offering free victim services and providing support to victims as they navigate the judicial process. Officials with MADD additionally work actively with state and local legislators to implement tougher laws against drunk driving and to close loopholes in existing laws. They have created research-based education programs for adults as well as awareness and prevention programs for youth.

Miami-Dade County MADD is located at 7700 N. Kendall Drive, Ste. 803, Miami, FL 33156. MADD National was formed in 1980. Miami-Dade County MADD was formed in 1983 by Diane Holmes whose 18-year old son was killed by a drunk driver. MADD is a non-profit, 501-C3 organization.

Orchestra Miami presents The Purple Palace 2/11/12

Orchestra Miami presents “The Purple Palace”
Saturday, Feb 11, 2012, 11:00 AM
Pinecrest Gardens
11000 SW 57 Ave
Pinecrest, FL 33156
orchestramiami.org

Orchestra Miami will present a fun-filled Family Concert, featuring a performance of The Purple Palace, composed by Bruce Adolphe with the story written by Louise Gikow. The 32-piece orchestra will be led by Orchestra Miami Artistic Director Elaine Rinaldi and the narrator will be Miami-based performance artist Octavio Campos. This delightful program will last approximately 50 minutes and is perfect for children ages 3 and up.

The Purple Palace tells the comic but touching tale of the land of Chromatica, where everything is light and color. Queen Red and King Blue have a child, Princess Purple. When she becomes queen, she banishes all colors but purple. This leads to nothing but trouble for her, and she eventually comes to understand her mistake. She invites all the banished colors to return, and Chromatica is once again vibrant and full of color. Beyond its affirmative social message for children- emphasizing the value of diversity and democracy- the story is rich in visual images that are clearly portrayed in the music. Each color has a theme, and as the plot unfolds, orchestral colors are varied and mixed just as an artist would use colors to illustrate the story in a book.

The concert will be on Saturday, February 11, 2012 at 11:00 AM at Pinecrest Gardens’ Banyan Bowl, located at 11000 SW 57 Avenue, Pinecrest, FL 33156. Tickets are $10 and include parking and admission to Pinecrest Gardens. Seating is by general admission. Tickets can be purchased online through Orchestra Miami’s website (www.OrchestraMiami.org) or by calling (305) 274-2103.

Free Thanksgiving Concerts for Families
Orchestra Miami is pleased to continue its series of Free Family Concerts designed to introduce young children to classical music. Tough Turkey in the Big City: A Thanksgiving Odyssey, by Bruce Adolphe and Louise Gikow, will be a treat for the whole family! Perfect for the attention spans of our young audience, this fun and engaging program will last approximately 45 minutes.

What happens when a turkey from the sticks meets a Park Avenue pigeon? With the feel of an old-time radio story, Tough Turkey in the Big City follows the comic blunders of Tom Turkey, who leaves the farm to try his luck in the big city. The story, related to the audience by a narrator, illustrates a close call with a menacing chef, a tussle at the “Turkey Club”, a brief romance with a pigeon, and a happy mix up at the Thanksgiving Day Parade. It’s a big-hearted story of a plucky bird on an unexpected journey.

Tom is portrayed by the bass trombone and his barnyard friends by the violin and clarinet. The music of the farm is a swinging barnyard counterpoint, while the music of the city recalls the smoky jazz of film noire. There’s also some fun march music at the parade, and hot Latin rhythms at the Turkey Club.

KCC Productions and Pinecrest Gardens present the Sons of Legends Saturday 11/12/11

KCC Productions and Pinecrest Gardens present the Sons of Legends Saturday
November 12, at 8 PM
Pinecrest Gardens
11000 Red Road
Pinecrest.

Comprising the sons of three of the the greatest legends in Latin Jazz, the band continue the tradition of Tito Puente (son Tito, Jr.), Mario Rivera (son Phoenix), and Jorge Dalto (son Miles) presenting the finest music of its kind. Tickets are $20-$25. For more information call 305.669.6990 or visit pinecrest-fl.gov.

Visiting from New York City, Sons of Legends (“S.O.L.”) is a new Latin Jazz band composed of the sons of some of Latin Jazz’s greatest musicians.

Phoenix Rivera, leader of the band, is one of the leading drummers on the New York jazz scene and son of the immortal Dominican saxophonist Mario Rivera. Highly regarded by musicians, critics, and audiences alike, Phoenix’s ambition is to make this band an echo of the previous generation while at the same time branching out in new directions in Latin jazz.

The comparison is inevitable. How could it be otherwise? Tito Puente Jr., on timbales, carries his father with him – imprinted on his physical being and locked in his soul. It’s in his looks, his joy, and his music. Tito, Jr.’s new CD release, “Got Mambo?” is a mixture of the old and the new as he takes a musical departure into some powerful new music he can truly call his own. The album is receiving heavy praise from Tropical and Latin Jazz critics alike.

Native New Yorker Miles Dalto has been playing piano from the age of five, with his father, legendary pianist Jorge Dalto, as his biggest inspiration. Miles plays it all, blending classic jazz with soul, funk and modern influences, creating his unique style. Miles has been hailed for his award winning performances at Carnegie Hall, Jazz at Lincoln Center and the Kennedy Center.

On percussion is Ismael “Bongo” Bruno, godson of the great conguero Carlos “Patato” Valdés, and who played with David Johansen in the ’80’s and Buster Poindexter in the ’90’s.

Educate Tomorrow Hosted Monte Carlo night at its Sixth Annual Gala by Betty Alvarez

Educate Tomorrow, a non-profit organization whose mission is to create independence for disadvantaged and foster youth through education, mentoring, and life skills training, hosted its 6th Annual Gala and Fundraiser on January 8.

The Educate Tomorrow Gala returned with a Monte Carlo Night. The festivities was at the luxurious private bay front estate on Old Cutler Road, whose grand architecture, beautiful courtyard and bay front view will transport guests to the experience of Monte Carlo. Guests enjoyed a variety of casino games and silent auction; exceptional wine, cocktails and food; and the company of Miami’s top executives and professionals.

Educate Tomorrow’s Monte Carlo Night included an assortment of casino games featuring blackjack, craps, roulette, and poker. At the end of the evening, guests traded in their chips for raffle tickets, which were randomly drawn. Raffle prizes and silent auction items included fabulous hotel stays, art work, cruises and more. All of the proceeds from ticket sales, auction items, sponsorships and donations for casino chips directly benefited Educate Tomorrow.

Guests enjoyed a selection of South Florida’s best restaurants including Smith & Wollensky, Aladdin’s Grill, Captain’s Tavern, Joanna’s Marketplace, Miami Chop House, Tap Tap, and Red the Steakhouse. Parties by Pat also passed their delicious appetizers. A tasty selection of gourmet desserts will be provided by Jennifer’s Homemade, Platinum Desserts, Homebaked by Tara, and Cakes by Denyse. These scrumptious South Florida favorites paired well with a selection of fine wines provided by Mattebella Vineyards and others and a variety of premium cocktails courtesy of Bacardi. The latest hits from the airwaves filled the dance floor courtesy of DJ Tony.

Additional event sponsors include the TriMix Foundation, Kaufman Rossin & Co., Crispin Porter + Bogusky, Ver Ploeg & Lumpkin, P.A., Robert and Edith Hudson, Stearns Weaver Miller Weissler Alhadeff & Sitterson, P.A., ProSource Solutions, and Antonio Misuraca,.

Every year hundreds of foster care children “age out” of the foster care system and are expected to transition into society as adults. Although the State of Florida provides them with financial aid for continuing education, many of them lack the required skills, guidance, and basic information needed to take advantage of these programs. Educate Tomorrow volunteers mentor these young adults and guide them in the process of completing high school and applying for college or technical school. The cost of mentoring, life skills training, and in-school support groups is approximately $2,000 per child for the first year, far less than the cost to society when a former foster child ends up homeless or incarcerated.

Educate Tomorrow is a non-profit organization whose primary mission is to provide one-on-one educational mentors to foster care children that are turning 18 and “aging out” of the system. Believing that education is the catalyst that will help these young adults reach their greatest potential, it seeks to work with organizations throughout the nation to implement the proven methods of one-on-one mentoring and to promote education as the path to independence and self-sufficiency for disadvantaged youth in this country. For more information please call 305.374.3751 or visit www.educatetomorrow.org.
