RA Sushi in South Miami Honors International Sushi Day with Complimentary Tootsy Maki 6/18/11

RA Sushi Honors International Sushi Day with Complimentary Tootsy Maki
Informal Holiday Now Listed in Reference Book, Chase’s Calendar of Events

On June 18, 2011, RA Sushi in South Miami is celebrating International Sushi Day, an informal holiday created to encourage sushi lovers around the world to eat more sushi. In honor of this special day, anyone who “likes” RA Sushi in South Miami on Facebook can print a special offer good for one complimentary Tootsy Maki.

To make this holiday even more official, RA Sushi has declared June 18 as International Sushi Day in the 2011 Chase’s Calendar of Events, the most comprehensive and authoritative reference book available on special events, worldwide holidays, civic observations, and more.

The complimentary Tootsy Maki certificate must be printed and redeemed between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. on Saturday, June 18, International Sushi Day. It is valid at RA Sushi in South Miami (5829 SW 73rd St., Miami, FL.; 305.341.0092).

Tootsy Maki is one of RA Sushi’s most popular rolls containing kani kama crab mix, shrimp and cucumber, rolled and topped with crunchy tempura bits and drizzled with a sweet eel sauce. The certificate can be printed on June 18 and is good for that day only, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Visit RA Sushi in South Miami’s Facebook page on International Sushi Day at http://www.facebook.com/RAsushiSouthMiami.

Sushi’s presentation has evolved over the years, when it began as a means of preserving raw fish in Southeast Asia and eventually became a form of “fast food” sold from street vendors. Now a celebrated cuisine worldwide, sushi has become an art form, with each restaurant offering its own signature dishes of nigiri, sashimi, and maki. On International Sushi Day, sushi connoisseurs and sushi novices are encouraged to dine on their favorite RA Sushi dishes or explore the menu and try something new. All 25 RA Sushi Bar Restaurant locations nationwide will participate in International Sushi Day.

See the certificate for official rules and details. This promotion is in no way sponsored, endorsed or administered by, or associated with, Facebook.

Akuara Teatro present Artefactus Teatro On OBBA

4599 SW. 75 Ave. Miami Fl. 33155.

of Wasabi, featuring MANO’s newest work.

Playful flashes of green and unlikely materials inspired the name for this exhibition but MANO’s newest work develops an unrealized nostalgic notion of Geisha’s, reinterpreting their iconic beauty in the current moment. “Since the first time I saw Gozilla vs Mothuraya I was hooked” says MANO “like so many others I was fascinated by the tiny twins (geishas) who lured Mothra with their song.

MANO exaggerates details and abstracts the familiar. Pale white faces with dark eyes and hair, red lips drawn to look like flowers merge cultures and visual language to create a modern narrative.

“Maroma Players” presents: “Somebody Wants To Say A Prayer”
by José Abreu Felippe.
Directed by: Rolando Moreno

In Somebody Wants To Say A Prayer, Abreu stirred by a overwhelming event (his mother died in 1995, after being hit by a car) assembles and disassembles, boldly, crucial passages in the life and death of a female victim of an accident; and the devastating effects that her sudden death causes on her loved ones. It is extremely difficult to summarize this complex and heart wrenching play, full of surprises, which explores with great theatrical expertise an absurd and dreadful incident.

Join MANO Fine Art for the Opening Reception for Harriet’s Secret, an exhibition showcasing a new body of work by Miami-based artist, Derek Wilson.

Inspired by the memories of his late mother, Wilson has createed a poignant tribute to a mother’s legacy of love.

Wilson, recalls that the last conversation he had with his mother was a heated debate about her symptoms and the 911 call that he eventually made. Harriet Kathryn Michael as it reads on her birth certificate was struck by a massive heart attack. She passed away in her son’s arms on March 18, 2005 at the age of fifty-six. In his eulogy Wilson spoke about how close he and his mother had always been, “We were the best of friends” Wilson said. Yet, soon after her death he would discover that his mother had kept secrets from him. Some secrets were innocent, as is the story behind her name; Wilson grew up knowing her as Kathy not Harriet, other secrets were little white lies and some were deeper.

Wilson’s work weaves memories into a simple yet sophisticated iconography that gives the viewer a sense of who Kathryn was. Works such as “In A Dream We Spoke”, a portrait of his mother painted on yellow post-it-notes was inspired by her tendency to leave trails of messages around the house. With other pieces such as with the interactive installation “Secret Recipe” the viewer is invited to view a very private world, a world filled with medical recipes and their corresponding side effects. This piece attempts to unravel the web of secrets involving her health; secrets that she undoubtedly took with her.

Wilson, who earned his B.A. in Sculpture from Florida International University, attributes his eclectic taste in materials and media to the many experiences he had as an undergraduate student. “My methodology as it relates to art, is and has always been in a constant state of flux,” says Wilson. “I have an unquenchable thirst for the experiment, the process; this is what drives me.” Wilson, currently lives in Miami, Florida with his wife.

RA Sushi Offers Manic Monday Special to Help Taxpayers Cope with Tax Day 4/18/11

Happy Hour Pricing Extended from 3 p.m. to Close at South Miami location on April 18
The Manic Monday special is available for dine in orders only, and it is offered at
RA Sushi in South Miami
5829 SW 73rd Street
Miami, FL. 305.341.0092

Tax season is here, which means the dreaded day is looming. This year, the tax return deadline has been extended to Monday, April 18, adding stress to an already loathed day of the week. To give Miami-Dade residents incentive for getting their taxes done early or providing a little relief for those who procrastinated, RA Sushi in South Miami has created a “Manic Monday” special, extending its Happy Hour from 3 p.m. to close on April 18.

Keeping a little money in their pockets, on tax day guests can choose from more than 35 sushi, appetizer, and tapas selections, plus more than 30 beer, wine and signature cocktails ranging from $2 to $7. RA Sushi in South Miami’s Happy Hour typically runs from 3 to 7 p.m., but on this specific day Happy Hour specials will be offered from 3 p.m. until close.

Updated earlier this year, the Happy Hour menu has been expanded to include new menu items, plus a variety of RA’s most popular dishes. Now included in the selections are new tapas menu items: Garlic Sugar Snap Peas and Shishito Peppers. Cocktails that were recently added to the menu are also being offered, such as the Dragon Bite (Bacardi Dragonberry, strawberry puree, fresh lemon juice, yuzu & a splash of soda make for an exotic blend bursting with fresh berry), Samurai Cowboy (Red Stag Black Cherry Bourbon, Aperol, yuzu sour, lemon juice & ginger ale create a powerfully exotic cocktail with a mellow bourbon kick), and Red Lotus (Absolut Ruby Red vodka, X-Rated, pink grapefruit & other fresh juices – sweet, tart & tasty). Included in the Happy Hour roundup are favorite dishes: Squid Salad, Seaweed Salad, Crispy Spicy Tuna (spicy tuna mix served on top of crispy sesame rice balls; drizzled with a soy chili sauce), RA Tapas (Sweet Onion Salmon, Garlic Citrus Yellowtail, Crispy Onion Albacore, Salmon Carpaccio, Seared Tuna), Spicy Sesame Chicken Wings (glazed chicken wings with a sweet & spicy sesame sauce), and Tuna Tataki (thinly sliced, seared ahi tuna; served with an onion soy vinaigrette).

Please join us for the Opening Reception of Paralelos
Featuring Claudia Ferrari

MANO Fine Art is pleased to present Paralelos featuring the exciting new work of Claudia Ferrari. Ferrari, a well known Latin American arist was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina. She has always followed her passion for languages and painting. While studying at the Sorbornne in Paris she had the opportunity to meet many local artists and was introduced to Japanese ideograms, for the next ten years Ferrari studied Japanese and discovered her inner world through sumi-e, an antique Japanese technique using natural dyes on rice paper. Together with her teacher, Kazu Takeda she turned more and more towards the oriental world where she recreates her occidental being through the techniques of sumi-e color.

On Saturday, March 19, MANO Fine Art presents Ferrari’s brilliant series, “Realidades Paralelas” (Parallel Realities) with a selection from MANO’s stunning new body of work, Erikae, which is also inspired by Japanese culture.

The Opening of Paralelos will be in conjunction with the Bird Road Art Walk.

About WAREHOUSE
Robert Bilbao opened WAREHOUSE Gallery and Alternative Art Space in December 1998 to promote contemporary artists that were starting their careers. A wide spectrum of artists started their emergence here from visual to performance art, including: Luis Gispert, Emilio Perez, William Cordova, Ruben Torres Llorca, Wendy Wischer, Tomas Esson, Florencio Gelabert, Alejandro Aguilera, Leondro Soto and Pedro Viscaino. A recent graduate of Florida International University, Andres Bilbao, sharing his father’s love of the arts, is continuing to promote and curate shows for up-and-coming artists. Andres plans to unite contemporary talents from diverse backgrounds, aesthetics and perspectives to further advance conversation and appeal to contemporary art.

About miami nice pop up
miami nice pop up was started by Patricia Guarch who became a little obsessed with the city she grew up in after being away at college. A student at New York University, she returned home and wanted to share the culture she could see from a distance. miami nice functions as a pop up, producing temporary projects, and curating the brand for Miami’s young people that she could see by tapping into the Afro-Cuban Jazz live music scene that’s becoming the new sound of the city, interviewing designers, and people doing interesting things. The pop up form is meant to keep the project fresh and relevant, giving the flexibility for new ideas and collaborations, and serving a generation that gets bored easily. www.miaminicepopup.com

The Opening reception for Erikae will be held during the new Bird Road Art Walk.

Originally from Cuba, MANO has lived and worked in Miami for more than twenty years. He exhibits his work regularly here and abroad.

Accent Alternative Art Space presents “TIME: A Personal Labyrinth”
The protean compositions of painter Ernesto Capdevila
Opening reception: Friday, February 11, 2011. 7:00 to 10:00 p.m.

Bird Road Art Walk Opening:
Saturday, February 19 , 2011. 7:00 to 10:00 p.m.

Dates: February 11 to March 12, 2011

Admission: Free

For lovers of Russian literature, Ernesto Capdevila’s exquisitely detailed compositions, with their pullulating casts of fairies, insects, zoomorphic forms and brocaded backgrounds, should feel like very familiar territory. “In each of these obsessive paintings, one may visit a tiny universe, directly connected to the hand of an artist with a remarkable gift” – says exhibit curator Silvia Dorfsman.

A graduate of San Alejandro Academy of Fine Arts, Capdevila was born in 1970 in Havana Cuba and now works and lives in Miami, Florida. He has widely exhibited his work in the U.S., Europe, Latin America, and the Caribbean – with over thirty individual shows and group exhibitions to his credit.

Come prepared to be deceived; be blinded by shadows, and above all, be willing to stare; these works require TIME.

Accent Alternative Art Space is a not-for-profit art initiative by advertising agency Accentmarketing. Launched in 2010, this gallery space is dedicated to non-commercially driven artwork, by emerging and mid-career artists. Essentially, AAAS wants to develop ideas that are outside of the mainstream scope of Miami commercial art galleries while harnessing local talent and culture. To learn more about the not-for-profit art gallery visit www.facebook.com/accentart

Join MANO Fine Art for their first event of the year.

About Face showcases the work of Cuban artists Pedro Ortiz and MANO, both artists navigate the fringes of subjectivity and contemporary portraiture.

For many artists the portrayal of an individual continues to be one of the most attractive and intricate subjects. Both Pedro Ortiz and MANO are well known for their depiction of faces primarily that of women. Ortiz’s work possesses an extraordinary sensitivity and simplicity of the genre. His works capture his great love for his homeland of Cuba and often appear as romantic narratives. MANO revels in reinvigorating contemporary portraiture through his use of mixed media often using the technique both as media and metaphor when approaching issues of identity.

Is a portrait all it appears to be? Portraiture is the interpretation of an individual’s likeness and personality, whether in a painting or other medium. It‘s origins may seem simple and almost poetic, but contemporary portraiture is decidedly a more complex negotiation.
The works presented in About Face are as varied and complex as the persons depicted.

The exhibit will be on view through January 30, 2011. For more information please contact 305.467.6819 or visit our website: http://www.manofineart.com

This reception will be held in conjunction with the new Bird Road Art Walk, held on the third Saturday of every month throughout the Bird Road Art District in Miami, FL.

About Face: Contemporary Portraiture

Is a portrait all that it appears to be? Portraiture is the interpretation of an individual’s likeness and personality, whether in a painting or other medium. It’s origins may seem simple and almost poetic, but contemporary portraiture is decidedly a more complex negotiation between identity and representation of the subject as well as the artist.

About Face is an exhibition featuring the work of Pedro Ortiz and MANO, both navigating the fringes of subjectivity and contemporary portraiture. MANO revels in reinvigorating contemporary portraiture through his use of mixed media. The works presented in About Face are as varied and complex as the personages represented.

The exhibit, About Face will be on view through January 15, 2011. For more information please contact 305.467.6819.

Accent Alternative Art Space Presents Havana a Capital’s Punishment Reflections 11/20/10

Accent Alternative Art Space Presents: Havana, a Capital’s Punishment Reflections by ten artists on the body and soul of one of the world’s greatest cities.

Opening Reception: Friday, November 12, 2010 from 7 to 10:00 p.m.
Bird Road Art Walk Opening: Saturday, November 20, 2010 from 7 to 10 p.m.
Exhibit Dates: November 12 to December 30, 2010 By appointment.
4841 SW 75th Avenue Miami, Florida 33155

Accentmarketing’s project art space will showcase works by ten artists exploring the cultural mythology inspired by the city of Havana. The exhibit deeply reflects the personal relationship these local artists have to a place that is a spiritual touchstone for the Cuban exile community.

Miami artists Gustavo Acosta, Alejandro Aguilera, Jose Bedia, Esteban Blanco, Arturo Cuenca, Ana Albertina Delgado, Ruben Torres Llorca, Alonso Mateo, Ciro Quintana and Victoria Montoro Zamorano contributed to this extraordinary selection of voices, some quiet and poignant, some with the immediacy of a scream; but all echoing their deeply-seated connection to the capital of their native country.

“Some [artists] lived in Havana until recently; some have not seen the place for fifty years,” said exhibit curator Silvia Dorfsman. “It’s amazing to see the power of these works, like spirits called forth from some collective consciousness.”

The exhibit includes works on canvas, sculpture, photography and mixed media. Some images document the passing of architectural treasures in heart-rending detail; others couch in metaphors and allegories the human side of Havana. The collection comes together in an eclectic and vulnerable visual tale of a place remembered, not with the mind, but with the heart.

Coral-Gables based Accentmarketing, continues to support its non-profit passion project by contributing the energy and creativity of its talented staff. Each gallery show is a collective effort sponsored by the agency, whose team has demonstrated their commitment to freethinking expression within the community in areas such as painting, graphic design, creative writing and music.

Accent Alternative Art Space continues to showcase all forms of art. Local artists are welcome to become fans of its Facebook page and begin an artistic discussion on Miami’s alternative art scene by posting their art and vision on facebook.com/accentART. Additionally, artists who post their work may qualify to have their pieces featured in the gallery.

A truly motivated group dedicated to the idea that art can transform a community, Accentmarketing is committed to furthering Miami’s artistic culture by giving the heart and soul of the community’s creative scene a chance to make their work known.

Accent Alternative Art Space is located at 4841 SW 75th Avenue Miami, Florida 33155 and is open by appointment.

Accent Alternative Art Space is a not-for-profit art initiative by advertising agency Accentmarketing. This creative piece of real estate launched in 2010 is dedicated to non-commercially driven artwork by emerging and mid-career artists. Essentially, AAAS wants to develop ideas that are outside of the mainstream scope of Miami commercial art galleries while harnessing local talent and culture. To learn more about the not-for-profit art gallery visit www.facebook.com/accentart

Artist
Pauline Goldsmith has worked in the global bio-pharmaceutical industry for over thirty-eight years, either in Europe or the United States. She now runs her own Consulting Company, Goldsmith Consulting, in Coconut Grove providing business strategy and project management skills to small to medium-sized companies. She originates from the United Kingdom, but arrived in the United States twenty two years ago and has never looked back since. Her homes have been made in Philadelphia, Boston and Miami. In her move to South Florida she found her spiritual home in the tropics. She is active in many positions in the local community, in theater, visual arts and botanical arenas.. Her love of watercolors and botanical art are now a consuming part of her life.

Artists Statement
“My deep love of South Florida’s lush tropical vegetation has encouraged me to use watercolors to translate their exquisite beauty to paper, so that it can be shared with everyone wherever they may live. In my attempts over the last few years to render the likeness of these plants into a visual art, I have become mesmerized by their subtle transformations in the ever changing tropical lights and water reflections. In botanical art the use of watercolors applied with very small brushes and a dry technique can be challenging and very frustrating, but at the same time the resulting fine details and depth of color are both rewarding and therapeutic.”

RA Sushi in South Miami presents October menu promotions and events line-up

RA SUSHI IN SOUTH MIAMI PRESENTS OCTOBER
Promotions & Events LINE-UP

RA Sushi, the stylish sushi restaurant and bar in South Miami, is pleased to announce its October 2010 menu promotions and events line-up including International Sake Day, “RA-ctoberfest” or what the Japanese call “Nihonshu no Hi;” its ONEHOPE and Pink Roll promo benefitting the National Breast Cancer Foundation, Inc.; the introduction of its newest roll, The King James; and its Halloween celebration entitled “Boo Bash.”

RA Sushi in South Miami’s October 2010 menu promo and events line-up:

Oct. 1-31, 2010: International Sake Day/“Nihonshu no Hi”
Fall, specifically the month of October, represents a beginning in the sake world: the start of a new brewing term. For this reason, Oct. 1 is known as “Nihonshu no Hi” (Sake Day) in Japan or International Sake Day throughout the rest of the world. In order to honor this special holiday, RA Sushi in South Miami will be celebrating “RA-ctoberfest” with a $9 unique and appetizing sake flight menu offered to all guests during the entire month.

Sake is a traditional Japanese rice wine that may be paired with different dishes, similar to wine pairing. Each sake has its own numeric rating. This rating can help sake novices decide which variety to try first. This number is usually listed on the bottle and is included on RA’s drink menus. The lower, negative numbers mean the sake is sweeter and heavier. The higher a positive number is, the drier the sake will be. Please see below for a simple breakdown of sake ratings:
Sake Meter Value (Nihonshu–Do):
· Sweetest (–20)
· Driest (+10)
The special sake flights will feature the following premium cold sakes:
Tozai “Living Jewel” Junmai (+6): Complex aromas of white grape, anise and a hint of sweet rice flavor with a clean, dry finish
Hakutsuru Sayuri “Little Lily” Junmai Nigori (-11): Coarsely filtered sake with hints of coconut and melon with a smooth, creamy finish
Kizakura “Pure” STARS (-18): Kizakura “Pure” STARS is produced with a secondary fermentation in the bottle, much like Champagne. Unique and festive for celebrating any special occasion or simply an everyday treat, Kizakura “Pure” STARS is sweet, crisp and effervescent. It is minimally filtered to maintain its round, satisfying flavor. Enjoyable before or after dinner, it pairs nicely with spicy foods.

OCT. 15-NOV. 15, 2010: ONEHOPE and Pink Roll Promo
From Friday, Oct. 15 to Monday, Nov. 15, all RA Sushi Bar Restaurant locations will donate 100 percent of the profits from the sale of the “ONEHOPE and Pink Roll” special to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, Inc. (NBCF).

The NBCF’s mission is to save lives through early cancer detection and to provide mammograms to those in need. ONEHOPE is a California wine company that donates half of its profits to breast cancer awareness, among other causes.

The “ONEHOPE and Pink Roll” special will be offered for $15 and includes ONEHOPE wine and the signature Pink Roll. The Pink Roll features shrimp, kani kama crab mix and sriracha combined with lettuce, avocado and cucumber wrapped in pink soy paper and served with a pink strawberry sauce. The roll is paired with a glass of ONEHOPE 2009 California Chardonnay.

OCT. 26, 2010-APRIL 13, 2011: The King James Roll
The highly anticipated Miami Heat season is right around the corner and RA Sushi in South Miami will pay homage to the team’s royalty with “The King James Roll” in honor of newest player LeBron James. The shrimp tempura, crab mix and cucumber rolled and topped with red beet tempura flakes and drizzled with a sweet eel sauce not only sports the basketball team’s colors, but will also be sold for $6 reminiscent to LeBron James’ jersey number. The roll will be available for the entire season starting on Oct. 26, 2010 through April 13, 2011.

OCT. 31, 2010: Boo Bash Halloween Party
RA Sushi in South Miami makes the perfect hot spot for ghoulish tricks and treats during the Boo Bash Halloween edition of the restaurant’s already popular Sunday night “Flying Fish Lounge.” The freakish fun starts at 8 p.m. with music, a variety of half-priced sushi and appetizers, plus great drink specials topped off with a “Best Costume” contest awarding the winner with a $100 RA gift certificate.

Miami, FL 33143

On Thursday, Sept. 16, 7PM-close, RA Sushi, the stylish sushi restaurant and bar in South Miami, invites fans to “Fall into the 90s at RA” – a 90s themed party celebrating the restaurant’s second anniversary and benefitting the Susan G. Komen For The Cure Miami/Ft. Lauderdale.

“Fall into the 90s at RA” will take partygoers on a bangin’ ride back to the 90s and boast all things lame from the decade…NOT! Guests can expect stylin’ looks worn by the staff – think 90210, high-rise jeans and grunge attire a la Kurt Cobain or even over-the-top fashions channeling MC Hammer or their inner Spice Girl – and fun décor to boot. In addition, everyone is encouraged to participate in the night’s “Look-Alike Contest” giving RA fans the chance to win a $100 RA Sushi gift certificate by dressing up as their favorite 90s actor, pop star, politician or TV personality.
The soirée – sure to be nothing, but DA BOMB – will feature DJ Rico on the 1s and 2s; complete with his definitive catalog of pure 90s party anthems to guarantee all guests will be getting’ jiggy wit it on the dance floor. For those looking to show off their dancing skills, a “Macarena Dance-Off” will also take place during the celebration gifting its champion with a $50 RA Sushi gift certificate. Last, but definitely not least (AS IF!) local celebrity drag queen Daisy Deadpetals – Too Wong Foo or The Birdcage anyone? – will put on a hella show and perform a fun rendition of Britney Spears’ “…Baby One More Time.”
In true RA Sushi fashion, Head Sushi Chef Elijah Wiener and RA mixologists worked together to create a sampling of specialty rolls and cocktails for the slammin’ celebration. The themed food menu will consist of $9 Japanese delights such as the Fresh Prince Roll (shrimp tempura, spicy kani kama crab mix and cucumber rolled and topped with red beet tempura bits; drizzled with a sweet eel sauce), Kramer Roll (smoked salmon, mango and cream cheese topped with avocado, red beet tempura bits and cashews; drizzled with mango and sweet eel sauces), Rice Rice Baby Roll (spicy tuna mix served on top of crispy sesame rice balls; drizzled with a soy chili sauce) and the Show Me The Money Roll (spicy salmon, cucumber, cilantro & jalapeño rolled and topped with avocado and sriracha). For those with an appetite, the restaurant is also offering The Biggie Smalls Roll (kani kama crab and cream cheese rolled in rice and seaweed, lightly tempura battered and topped with spicy tuna, more kani kama crab mix and sliced lotus root; finished with a sweet eel sauce and spinach tempura bits; $10). In the spirit of giving, $2 from the purchase of each item from the entire sushi menu listed above will be donated to the Susan G. Komen For The Cure Miami/Ft. Lauderdale.

RA’s $5 drink specials include the Baywatch Punch (a delicious blend of cold sake, liqueurs and tropical juices), Snoop Dogg’s drink of choice Gin & Juice, Central Perk Martini (espresso, coffee martini), Kurt Cobain Cocktail (a mix of Goldschlager, Rumplemintz and Jagermeister) and a Bye Bye Bye Martini (Effen Black Cherry Vodka, Nigori Sake, triple sec and lime juice).

South Miami got a huge boost as the long awaited grand opening of Segafredo came about on Sept 2, 2010 . Located in the heart of the South Miami this Segafredo location plans to compliment the already vibrant atmosphere the area has built up over the last couple of years. What better way to celebrate the opening of this global brand than to tap into its Italian roots in spectacular fashion? Owners Willy and Minerva Quintana are opening Segafredo South Miami in grand style.

Willy and Minerva Quintana are not only husband and wife but form an electric duo who realized the potential for the popular Segafredo brand in south Miami. In memory of Nicholas “Nicky” Mailliard and his courageous fight against cancer.

About Nicky’s Week:
Rich Howland, one of the founders of RA Sushi, created Nicky’s Week to promote the research and treatment being done at St. Jude. The event is named in memory of Howland’s nephew, Nicky Mailliard, who was treated at St. Jude for ependymoma, a brain tumor.
When doctors discovered the tumor in December 2001, Nicky’s parents turned to St. Jude for their son’s treatment. The hospital was able to eradicate the tumor, but only for a short time. By September 2004, the cancer had returned, and was even more aggressive. In February 2005, at age 13, Nicky lost his battle.
“St. Jude played a critical role during Nicky’s illness by providing state-of-the-art care and by providing important information to our family. I want to help ensure that the programs at St. Jude remain available to any family that is forced to deal with the extreme heartache associated with the serious illness of a child,” Howland said.

St. Jude:
St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is the premier pediatric cancer research center. Its mission is to find cures for children with cancer and other catastrophic diseases through research and treatment.
Since opening in 1962, St. Jude has treated children from all 50 states and around the world.
St. Jude is the only pediatric cancer research center where families never pay for treatments that are not covered by insurance. No child is ever denied treatment because of the family’s inability to pay.
During the past three years, 85.3 percent of every dollar received by St. Jude has gone to the current and future needs of the hospital.
Working together, our physicians and scientists have pioneered treatments that have helped push the overall survival rates for childhood cancers from less than 20 percent in 1962 to more than 70 percent today.
The survival rate for the most common form of childhood cancer, acute lymphoblastic leukemia, has risen from just 4 percent in 1962 to 94 percent today.

Southland Mall, the only enclosed regional mall servicing South Miami-Dade County down to the Florida Keys and boasting over 1 million square feet of gross leasable space, has partnered with Old Navy and the Rotary Club of Perrine Cutler Ridge Palmetto Bay to hold a Shoe Collection Drive for the Haiti earthquake victims. The event will take place on Saturday, February 27th at the Old Navy store entrance and the fountain area inside the mall by TJ Maxx from 12 noon through 5 pm. The focus of the collection is shoes, but people are encouraged to donate new and gently used items, such as clothing, blankets, diapers, canned goods, and first aid kits. Cash and check contributions will also be accepted and forwarded to Food for the Poor.

“Among the many needs that Haiti has right now, one of them is shoes; children are walking on glass and debris and workers need boots to wade through the rubble”. “Haiti needs everyone’s support and Southland Mall is honored to be a part of this noble endeavor,” said Maggie Anzardo, marketing director at Southland Mall.
To help mitigate this need, for a limited time Old Navy is offering a special price on sandals, two for $5.00. The community is encouraged to participate. Help us send shoes to Haiti.

Sóniko is the creative sonic experience conformed by Alex Izaguirre, Javier Güell, Jorge García and Toto González, rooted in Miami’s underground spectrum of various musical tendencies. The 90’s Grunge, Brit Pop, a decisive base of Rock en Español, and fine arrangements of electronic variations mainly influence their sound and style.
In Sóniko’s first album “Kombustión”, their four members took on the enormous task of producing and working with renowned Grammy award winner Marcelo Añez (Shakira-Unplugged & Thalía), who put the final touches and reaffirmed the band’s desired sound.
A CD that got them 3 MTV Español top ten videos and concerts around the USA including SXSW, Latin Alternative Music Conference and Billboard Latin Music Conference among others.

Sóniko’s second album “Antídoto Parcial” shows their growth as composers and it’s evident in a collection of 12 excellent tracks. On this occasion, the band decided to bring back the locally acclaimed “Laberinto” which wasn’t released in “Kombustión”, with the special appearance of Gabriel from Minimal joining Alex on vocals.
The band will celebrate on May 21st at Transit Lounge the release or their new album in Miami with a free event supported by Myspace Latino, Jack Daniels, Gibson and Fábrika. This event will be special because SONIKO will do a live Internet broadcast for all their fans and friends outside Miami. This live broadcast will start at 10PM Eastern time at www.soniko.com
Since their origins in 2002, Sóniko is one of those bands that have triggered Miami’s interest in indie rock in both the Anglo and Latin community. Their local success has reached out to other places such as California, New York, Georgia, Texas and Puerto Rico. Through Fabrika, Myspace, Facebook and several other music related Internet sites, the band has built up a strong international fan base, which is awaiting the moment of Soniko’s powerful live performance to be back and also to be seen for the first time.
