Auditions will take place from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, November 23, offering participants from Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach counties the chance to showcase their vocal abilities and compete for a spot in the 2025 final event.

Re: American Heritage Schools to Host its Annual “K-9 Cause: An Evening of Art” Auction 4/20/24

Plantation, Florida, 33325
Website
Cost: $20 online and $25 at the door

American Heritage Schools [ahschool.com], the top-ranked PK3 through 12 college preparatory school in Florida, is proud to announce its annual “K-9 Cause: An Evening of Art” auction benefiting the Broward Sheriff’s Foundation’s Retired Canine Relief Fund, on Saturday, April 20.

Everyone loves dogs; however, police dogs, or K-9s, are a special breed. Instead of enjoying the pampered pet lifestyle, K-9s dedicate their entire lives to working daily to protect and serve citizens in our community along with their fearless handlers. They are considered law enforcement officers, whose duties include constant training, apprehending suspects, and searching for explosives, drugs, and missing persons.

When the K-9s retire, their law enforcement handlers graciously adopt them and continue to care for them, as these K-9s have become their friends for life. Recognizing that the medical and healthcare for these K-9s can get quite costly, the Broward Sheriff’s Foundation has established the Retired K-9 Healthcare Fund. This Fund pays for up to 50% of the wellness care costs for all retired K-9s from any local law enforcement agency in Broward County.

Inspired by a little boy’s passion for animals and art, American Heritage Schools is raising money to “fund this fund” by selling artistic renditions of these fine K-9s. Jackson Laurie, a sophomore at American Heritage Schools, and his parents Dr. Douglas Laurie and Nikki Laurie-Van Allen have partnered with the National Art Honor Society and the award-winning Fine Arts faculty at American Heritage to create artwork of these very K-9 being honored.

American Heritage Schools, Broward Campus, will be hosting a Silent Auction for these original works of art, as well as a limited supply of prints for sale at our K-9 Cause event. 100% of all funds raised from this event will benefit the Broward Sheriff Foundation’s Retired K-9 Relief Fund.

Named after Jenny, a one-of-a-kind child who was energetic, beautiful and blessed with a loving family but lost her life because she did not know how to swim, “Swim for Jenny Week” seeks to strengthen local communities, impacting the lives of thousands by teaching drowning prevention and water safety techniques.

Registration for “Swim for Jenny Week” is available by phone at 954-334-9622 or in person at any of the following participating YMCA locations:

The annual breakfast, in partnership with the City of Weston, features U.S. Navy SEAL Lt. Commander, Harvard University graduate and six-time Paralympic Medalist Dan Cnossen as the keynote speaker. During his powerful presentation, Cnossen will inspire attendees with stories of how leadership, motivation and mental strength helped him fight for his life and guided him through many challenges after losing his legs during a military mission in Afghanistan over a decade ago.

According to data from the Florida Department of Veterans’ Affairs, out of the 19.1 million total veterans in the U.S., almost 10% or 1.4 million live in Florida, making it the third largest veteran population in the nation. It is because of this, that the special benefits offered by the Y to the military and their families living in South Florida are more important than ever. Through the YMCA’s military membership, families can spend quality time together, meet other military families and enjoy the Y’s membership offerings in a supportive environment. Military benefits include opportunities for paid employment and as volunteers, facility usage for training purposes, health and wellness seminars and cross promotions of shared resources.

The clinical diagnostics segment accounted for the largest share of the market in 2015. This is attributed to the increased understanding of the relevance of investigating and understanding patterns of protein expression for diseases and drug development.

Conference Sessions:
Track 1: Proteomics & System Biology
Proteomics is an emerging field that has been highly enabled by the human genome project. Proteins are the products of genes, the machinery of the cells in our bodies. When genes are disrupted, the proteins are also affected. When pathogens infect us, causing disease, proteins play a key role in signaling the presence and ridding us of these invaders. Almost every process that occurs in our cells – from the metabolization of simple sugar to the division of cells – is dependent on proteins for smooth operation. In general, proteomics seeks to detect and quantify as many proteins as possible.
Track 2: Chemical Proteomics & Profiling Drug Targets
Chemical proteomics is a branch and improving area of chemical biology that finds to design small molecule probes to understand protein function. In the context of natural products, chemical proteomics can be used to identify the protein binding partners or targets of small molecules in live cells. The direct detection of drug-protein interactions in living cells is a major challenge in drug discovery research. Recently, we introduced an approach termed thermal proteome profiling (TPP), which enables the monitoring of changes in protein thermal stability across the proteome using quantitative mass spectrometry.
Track 3: Multiomics for Precision Medicine
Systematical studies of clinical and pathological mechanisms and identification of optimal therapeutic targets through integrative analysis of multi-omics data from different levels and resources have become an important research direction of precision medicine, which would provide innovative perspectives on disease study and new theoretical basis for early diagnosis, personalized treatment and medicine guide.
Track 4: Analytical Proteomics & Genomics
Proteomics are applied to identify protein modification to determine the difference between a wild type and a genetically modified organism. It is also used to study protein-protein interactions involved in plant defence reactions. Genomics is the new science that deals with the identification of all the sequences in the entire genome and involves in the genetic make-up of organisms. The genome is a complete set of genes inside a cell. Genomics is the study of Genomic sequence is used to study the functions of the numerous genes such as functional genomics and to compare the genes in one organism with the another one i.e, comparative genomics, or to generate the 3-D structure of one or more proteins from each protein family, through this we can identify structural genomics. Analytical methods such as protein identification, analysis of protein primary structure and post-translational modifications by means of the most comprehensive technologies for proteomics, mass spectrometry and bioinformatics.
Track 5: Bioinformatics and Computational Proteomics
Bioinformatics is a combination of molecular biology and computer sciences. Bioinformatics is very important for the use of genomic information to understand human diseases and to identify new ways for gene-based drug discovery and development. Computational Proteomics is about the computational methods, algorithms, databases and methodologies used to process, manage, analyze and interpret the data produced in proteomics experiments. As in many scientific disciplines, the final goal of Computational Proteomics is to infer knowledge models (e.g. verify a hypothesis or identify proteins involved in a disease) from the inspection of biological samples.
Track 6: Clinical & Translational Proteomics
Clinical Proteomics includes all aspects of translational proteomics. As the research in molecular medicine field has moved beyond genomics to proteomics. Clinical proteomics studies can help researcher understand the characterization of cellular network, impact of the disease and its therapy. Over the years the field of proteomics has expanded with the development of mass-spectrometry to a broad and varied research areas of science. Incredible progress in instrumentation of mass-spectrometry has led to the sensitivity, accuracy and quick analysis and identification of proteins. With the advancement in science qualitative and quantitative differences in protein profiles of particular diseased vs. normal can be analyzed. Translational Proteomics involves areas of human proteomics using multi-disciplinary approaches to untangle complex disease processes.
Track 7: Innovative Fractionation & Enrichment Techniques
Phosphoproteins are often present in quite low abundance and tend to co-exist with their unphosphorylated isoform within the cell. To make their identification more practicable, the use of enrichment protocols is often required. The enrichment strategies can be performed either at the level of phosphoproteins or at the level of phospho-peptides. Both approaches have their advantages and disadvantages. Most enriching strategies are based on chemical modifications, affinity chromatography to capture peptides and proteins containing negatively charged phosphate groups onto a positively charged matrix, or immunoprecipitation by phospho-specific antibodies.
Track 8: Proteomics Technologies
The origin of proteomics technologies for global detection and quantitation of proteins creates new opportunities and challenges for those seeking to gain greater understanding of diseases. The high passing proteomics technologies are combining with the advanced bioinformatics and are extensively used to identify the molecular signatures of diseases based on protein pathways and signaling cascades. The mass spectrometry plays a vital role in the proteomics and has to become an indispensable tool for the molecular and cellular biology. While the potential is high, many challenges and issues remain to be unsolved, such as mining low abundant proteins and integration of proteomics with genomics and metabolomics data. Even so, proteomics is the base for constructing and extracting useful knowledge to biomedical research
Track 9: Biomedical Sciences In Proteomics
Biomedical research is generally known as medical research. And it is the basic research, applied research, or translational research conducted to aid and supports the development of knowledge in the field of medicine.Proteomics is used in many areas of research such as discovery of markers for diagnosis and vaccine candidates, understanding pathogenic mechanisms, and also in the study of expression patterns at different time points and also in response to different stimuli, and in elucidating the functional protein networks. Proteomics analysis involves in the sample preparation, protein separation, and protein identification.
Track 10: Innovative Mass Spectrometry Techniques
Mass spectrometers can acquire qualitative and quantitative information on a large scale to study protein expression, protein interactions and modifications, in complexes, organelles, cells and tissues. The currently available technological platforms and approaches offer a wide selection for proteomics experiments from low to high throughput, from shotgun discovery to targeted validation.
Track 11: Cancer Epigenetics
Epigenetics, the study of potentially heritable changes in the gene expression (active versus inactive genes) and that does not involve the changes to the underlying DNA sequence – a change in phenotype without a change in genotype and which in turn affects how cells read the genes. And also epigenetic change can have more damaging effects that can results in diseases like cancer. At least three systems including DNA methylation, histone modification and non-coding RNA (ncRNA) and associated gene silencing are currently considered to initiate and sustain epigenetic change. Cancer epigenetics is the study of somatically heritable changes to molecular processes that influence the flow of information between the DNA of cancer cells and their gene expression patterns. the technology most frequently used for the analysis of clinical tissue samples is the two-dimensional gel electrophoresis (2DE) are combined with the matrix assisted laser desorption/ionization time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS).
Track 12: Metabolic Disorders & Metabolomics
When abnormal chemical reactions occurs in your body and disrupt the process it is known as metabolic disorder. There are different groups of disorders. Some affect the breakdown of amino acids, carbohydrates, or lipids. Another group, mitochondrial diseases, affects the parts of the cells that produce the energy. Metabolomics ,it is the study of low molecular weight molecules or metabolites are found within cells and biological systems. The metabolome is a measure of the inputs and outputs of biological pathways and it is often considered to more representative of the functional state of a cell than other ‘omics measures such as genomics or proteomics. In addition, many metabolites are conserved across the various animal species, facilitating the extrapolation of research findings in the laboratory animals to humans. Common technologies are used for measuring the metabolome include the mass spectrometry (MS) and also nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR), which can detect the hundreds to thousands of unique chemical entities (UCE).
Track 12: Stem Cell Proteomics
Proteomics it is a series of technology and platforms driven by advancements in mass spectrometry and bioinformatics that encompass protein identification, the relative quantitation of proteins and peptides, their subcellular localization, and studies of post-translational modifications and protein-protein interactions. Greenspoon Marder, an Am Law 200 and NLJ 350 law firm, and the Legal Learning Series, a leader in legal education, networking and events, announce today the launch of the First Annual Cannabis Law and Business Conference & Expo to be held on November 4 at the Bonaventure Resort and Spa in Weston, FL.

Focusing on laws affecting practitioners and businesses within the cannabis industry, the conference provides the opportunity to bring together the best thought leaders from around the country to explore the legal issues and challenges facing the sector and to educate those interested in the cannabis industry.

“The firm’s sponsorship of the First Annual Cannabis Law and Business Conference is a significant step in our efforts to serve the $5.4 billion legalized cannabis industry on a national level,” says Gerald Greenspoon, Co-Managing Director of Greenspoon Marder.
“We are honored to work with the Legal Learning Series to make this event the prime destination for attorneys and business professionals looking to enter the industry or sharpen their knowledge.”

As of 2016, 25 states in the U.S. plus Washington D.C., Puerto Rico, and Guam have enacted laws to legalize medical marijuana. Florida and several other states are considering medical marijuana on the ballot in November. With the cannabis industry preparing to enter new states, it is critical for legal practitioners and business professionals alike to stay abreast of these issues and to get out in front of them wherever possible.

“We are especially excited to have the support of our presenting sponsor Greenspoon Marder,” says Robert Friedman, Co-founder and Executive Director of Legal Learning Series. He continues, “Having a national firm that is committed to taking a leadership position in the cannabis space as a partner in our endeavor has made all the difference. The support we receive from leading firms like Greenspoon Marder, and from our existing partners, allows us to provide the absolute best in quality programming and events for the legal community.”

Greenspoon Marder expanded its national corporate practice in highly-regulated industries to include Cannabis Law in June 2016, along with the opening of three new offices in Denver, Las Vegas and San Diego – three cities in regions that are central to the advances, legalization and regulation of cannabis. The firm plans to continue to extend its presence and open additional offices in states that are likely to play a key role in shaping the cannabis industry.

With goals to continue its ongoing youth outdoor programs to “create the next generation that cares” and establish an annual statewide event to serve Florida’s conservation and youth, the Wildlife Foundation of Florida (WFF) and “Alligator Ron” Bergeron will host the inaugural Florida BlueGreen (www.FloridaBlueGreen.com) event.

Recent studies show that children are spending more time with technology and much less time outdoors. To empower and encourage children to participate in traditional outdoor recreation such as fishing, archery, hunting, and bird watching, funds raised at the event will benefit the Wildlife Foundation’s Florida Youth Conservation Centers Network (www.FYCCN.org) and several other important youth and conservation initiatives.

The Florida Cracker-style cowboy gala, to be held at the private Everglades ranch of Bergeron, will feature live entertainment, music, a silent auction, authentic Florida Cracker Cowboy barbecue and drinks, prizes and more.

Some of Florida’s most notable wildlife advocates such as Jim Fowler, host of the hit television series Wild Kingdom; Harvey Oyer, author of Charlie Pierce books; Beau Turner of the Beau Turner Youth Conservation Center, and Captain Rick Murphy, star of Florida Sportsman’s Adventures will be in attendance. Recording artist Monique McCall will provide entertainment.

One-of-a-kind silent auction items include a fishing trip with Miami Dolphins’ All-Pro lineman and former Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission Commissioner Dwight Stephenson, and lunch with Jim Fowler. Items are online and available for bid anytime at www.floridabluegreen.com/auction.

While any donation amount is appreciated, event sponsorship opportunities are available up to $10,000.

This year’s event theme is the challenge and benefit of fighting Childhood Obesity.

Over the past three decades, childhood obesity rates in America have tripled. Today, almost one in every three children in our nation is overweight or obese. The numbers are even higher in African American and Hispanic communities, where nearly 40% of the children are overweight or obese. If we don’t solve this problem, one third of all children born in 2000 or later will suffer from diabetes at some point in their lives. Many others will face chronic obesity-related health problems like heart disease, high blood pressure, cancer, and asthma.

The tents have arrived in Haiti and will be installed this summer as part of a secondary school on the property of L’Athletique d’Haiti. On hand to set the vibe was famed band Miami City Mix and later in the evening DJ Umber Bandi-Ville was mixing beats.
